Context. Cold planets, including all habitable planets, produce only scattered light emission in the visual to near-infrared wavelength range. For this reason it is highly desirable to adapt the technique for the direct imaging of reflected light from extra-solar planets. Aims. For the nearby system ε Eri, we want to set much deeper detection limits for the expected scattered radiation from the radial velocity planet candidate (≈0.7 MJ) and the warm dust using the VLT/SPHERE adaptive optics (AO) instrument with the ZIMPOL imaging polarimeter. Methods. We carried out very deep imaging polarimetry of ε Eri based on 38.5 h of integration time with a broad-band filter (λc = 735 nm) for the search of the polarization signal from a planet or from circumstellar dust using AO, coronagraphy, high precision differential polarimetry, and angular differential imaging. The data were collected during 12 nights within four epochs distributed over 14 months and we searched for a signal in the individual epochs. We also combined the full data set to achieve an even higher contrast limit considering the Keplerian motion using the K-Stacker software. All data were also combined for the search of the scattering signal from extended dust clouds. We improved various data reduction and post-processing procedures and also developed new ones to enhance the sensitivity of SPHERE/ZIMPOL further. The final detection limits were quantified and we investigated the potential of SPHERE/ZIMPOL for deeper observations. Results. The data of ε Eridani provide unprecedented contrast limits but no significant detection of a point source or an extended signal from circumstellar dust. For each observing epoch, we achieved a 5 σ풩 point source contrast for the polarized intensity CP = Qϕ/I★ between 2 × 10−8 and 4 × 10−8 at a separation of ρ ≈ 1″, which is as expected for the proposed radial velocity planet at a quadrature phase. The polarimetric contrast limits are close to the photon noise limits for ρ > 0.6″ or about six times to 50 times better than the intensity limits because polarimetric imaging is much more efficient for speckle suppression. Combining the data for the search of a planet moving on a Keplerian orbit with the K-Stacker technique improves the contrast limits further by about a factor of two, when compared to an epoch, to about CP = 0.8 × 10−8 at ρ = 1″. This would allow the detection of a planet with a radius of about 2.5 RJ. Should future astrometry provide strong constraints on the position of the planet, then a 3 σ풩 detection at 1″ with CP ≈ 5 × 10−9 would be within reach of our data. The surface brightness contrast limits achieved for the polarized intensity from an extended scattering region is about 15 mag arcsec−2 at 1″ or up to 3 mag arcsec−2 deeper than previous limits. For ε Eri, these limits exclude the presence of a narrow dust ring and they constrain the dust properties. The photon statistics would allow deeper limits but we find a very weak systematic noise pattern probably introduced by polarimetric calibration errors. Conclusions. This ε Eri study shows that the polarimetric contrast limits for reflecting planets with SPHERE/ZIMPOL can be improved to a level below Cp < 10−8 by just collecting more data during many nights using software such as K-Stacker, which can combine all data considering the expected planet orbit. Contrast limits of Cp ≈ 10−9 are within reach for ε Eri if the search can be optimized for a planet with a well-known orbit. This limit is also attainable for other bright nearby stars, such as α Cen or Sirius A. Such data also provide unprecedented sensitivity for the search of extended polarized emission from warm circumstellar dust. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. Wavefront sensing and control (WFSC) will play a key role in improving the stability of future large segmented space telescopes while relaxing the thermo-mechanical constraints on the observatory structure. Coupled with a coronagraph to reject the light of an observed bright star, WFSC enables the generation and stabilisation of a dark hole (DH) in the star image to perform planet observations. Aims. While WFSC traditionally relies on a single wavefront sensor (WFS) input to measure wavefront errors, the next generation of instruments will require several WFSs to address aberrations with different sets of spatial and temporal frequency contents. The multiple measurements produced in such a way will then have to be combined and converted to commands for deformable mirrors to modify the wavefront subsequently. Methods. We asynchronously operate a loop controlling the high-order modes digging a DH and a control loop that uses the rejected light by a Lyot coronagraph with a Zernike wavefront sensor to stabilize the low-order aberrations. Using the HiCAT testbed with a segmented telescope aperture, we implement concurrent operations and quantify the expected cross-talk between the two controllers. We then present experiments that alternate high-order and low-order control loops to identify and estimate their respective contributions. Results. We show an efficient combination of the high-order and low-order control loops, keeping a DH contrast better than 5 × 10-8 over a 30 min experiment and stability improvement by a factor of 1.5. In particular, we show a contrast gain of 1.5 at separations close to the DH inner working angle, thanks to the low-order controller contribution. Conclusions. Concurrently digging a DH and using the light rejected by a Lyot coronagraph to stabilize the wavefront is a promising path towards exoplanet imaging and spectroscopy with future large space observatories. Context. High-contrast imaging of exoplanets around nearby stars with future large-segmented apertures requires starlight suppression systems optimized for complex aperture geometries. Future extremely large telescopes (ELTs) equipped with high-contrast instruments operating as close as possible to the diffraction limit will open a bulk of targets in the habitable zone around M-stars. In this context, the phase-induced amplitude apodization complex mask coronagraph (PIAACMC) is a promising concept for highe efficiency coronagraphic imaging at small angular separations with segmented telescopes. Aims. The complex focal plane mask of the PIAACMC is a multi-zone, phase-shifting mask comprised of tiled hexagons that vary in depth. The mask requires micro-fabrication techniques because it is generally made of hundreds micron-scale hexagonal zones with depths ranging over a few microns. We aim to demonstrate that the complex focal plane mask of a PIAACMC with a small inner working angle can be designed and manufactured for segmented apertures. Methods. We report on the numerical design, specifications, manufacturing, and characterization of a PIAACMC complex focal plane mask for the segmented pupil experiment for exoplanet detection facility. Results. Our PIAACMC design offers an inner working angle of 1.3 λ/D and is optimized for a 30% telescope-central-obscuration ratio including six secondary support structures (ESO/ELT design). The fabricated reflective focal plane mask is made of 499 hexagons, and the characteristic size of the mask features is 25 μm, with depths ranging over ~0.4 μm. The mask sag local deviation is measured to an average error of 3 nm and standard deviation of 6 nm rms. The metrological analysis of the mask using interferential microscopy gives access to an in-depth understanding of the component's optical quality, including a complete mapping of the zone depth distribution zone-depth distribution. The amplitude of the errors in the fabricated mask are within the wavefront control dynamic range. Conclusions. We demonstrate the feasibility of fabricating and characterizing high-quality PIAA complex focal plane masks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Giant exoplanets on wide orbits have been directly imaged around young stars. If the thermal background in the mid-infrared can be mitigated, then exoplanets with lower masses can also be imaged. Here we present a ground-based mid-infrared observing approach that enables imaging low-mass temperate exoplanets around nearby stars, and in particular within the closest stellar system, α Centauri. Based on 75-80% of the best quality images from 100 h of cumulative observations, we demonstrate sensitivity to warm sub-Neptune-sized planets throughout much of the habitable zone of α Centauri A. This is an order of magnitude more sensitive than state-of-the-art exoplanet imaging mass detection limits. We also discuss a possible exoplanet or exozodiacal disk detection around α Centauri A. However, an instrumental artifact of unknown origin cannot be ruled out. These results demonstrate the feasibility of imaging rocky habitable-zone exoplanets with current and upcoming telescopes.

In the 1980s, excess infrared emission was discovered around main-sequence stars; subsequent direct-imaging observations revealed orbiting disks of cold dust to be the source. These 'debris disks' were thought to be by-products of planet formation because they often exhibited morphological and brightness asymmetries that may result from gravitational perturbation by planets. This was proved to be true for the β Pictoris system, in which the known planet generates an observable warp in the disk. The nearby, young, unusually active late-type star AU Microscopii hosts a well-studied edge-on debris disk; earlier observations in the visible and near-infrared found asymmetric localized structures in the form of intensity variations along the midplane of the disk beyond a distance of 20 astronomical units. Here we report high-contrast imaging that reveals a series of five large-scale features in the southeast side of the disk, at projected separations of 10-60 astronomical units, persisting over intervals of 1-4 years. All these features appear to move away from the star at projected speeds of 4-10 kilometres per second, suggesting highly eccentric or unbound trajectories if they are associated with physical entities. The origin, localization, morphology and rapid evolution of these features are difficult to reconcile with current theories.

Future extremely large telescopes will adopt segmented primary mirrors with several hundreds of segments. Cophasing of the segments together is essential to reach high wavefront quality. The phasing sensor must be able to maintain very high phasing accuracy during the observations, while being able to phase segments dephased by several micrometers. The Zernike phase contrast sensor has been demonstrated on-sky at the Very Large Telescope. We present the multiwavelength scheme that has been implemented to extend the capture range from ±λ/2 on the wavefront to many micrometers, demonstrating that it is successful at phasing mirrors with piston errors up to ±4.0  μm on the wavefront. We discuss the results at different levels and conclude with a phasing strategy for a future extremely large telescope.

The manufacturing of toric mirrors for the Very Large Telescope-Spectro-Polarimetric High-Contrast Exoplanet Research instrument (SPHERE) is based on Active Optics and stress polishing. This figuring technique allows minimizing mid and high spatial frequency errors on an aspherical surface by using spherical polishing with full size tools. In order to reach the tight precision required, the manufacturing error budget is described to optimize each parameter. Analytical calculations based on elasticity theory and finite element analysis lead to the mechanical design of the Zerodur blank to be warped during the stress polishing phase. Results on the larger (366 mm diameter) toric mirror are evaluated by interferometry. We obtain, as expected, a toric surface within specification at low, middle, and high spatial frequencies ranges.

Wide-field astronomy requires the development of larger aperture telescopes. The optical properties of a three-mirror modified-Rumsey design provide significant advantages when compared to other telescope designs: (i) at any wavelength, the design has a flat field and is anastigmatic; (ii) the system is extremely compact, i.e., it is almost four times shorter than a Schmidt. Compared to the equally compact flat-field Ritchey-Chrétien with a doublet-lens corrector, as developed for the Sloan digital sky survey-and which requires the polishing of six optical surfaces-the proposed modified-Rumsey design requires only a two-surface polishing and provides a better imaging quality. All the mirrors are spheroids of the hyperboloid type. Starting from the classical Rumsey design, it is shown that the use of all eight available free parameters allows the simultaneous aspherization of the primary and tertiary mirrors by active optics methods from a single deformable substrate. The continuity conditions between the primary and the tertiary hyperbolizations are achieved by an intermediate narrow ring of constant thickness that is not optically used. After the polishing of a double vase form in a spherical shape, the primary-tertiary hyperbolizations are achieved by in situ stressing. The tulip-form secondary is hyperbolized by stress polishing. Other active optics alternatives are possible for a space telescope. The modified-Rumsey design is of interest for developing large space- and ground-based survey telescopes in UV, visible, or IR ranges, such as currently demonstrated with the construction of identical telescopes MINITRUST-1 and -2, f/5-2 degrees field of view. Double-pass optical tests show diffraction-limited images.

A study is presented of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for the measurement of phasing errors of the type found in segmented telescopes. We show that with a pinhole much larger than the Airy disk and an optical path difference between the arms equal to a quarter of the wavelength, the interferometric signal is related to the second derivative of the wave front. In this condition the signal is produced mostly by the segmentation errors and is marginally sensitive to other aberrations including atmospheric turbulence. The signal has distinguishable symmetric and antisymmetric properties that are related to segment aberrations. We suggest using the antisymmetric component of the signal to retrieve piston, tip, and tilt. The symmetric component of the signal serves as an estimate of the measurement error. In this way we proceed with a study of the errors associated with the misalignment of the interferometer, the segment edge imperfections, and the nonaveraged atmospheric perturbations. The entire study is performed on a theoretical basis, and numerical simulations are used to cross check the analytical results.

An interferential position sensor for operation in space at a deep cryogenic temperature (4 K) is derived from a commercial sensor. The application is for the Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver submillimetric imaging Fourier-transform spectrometer on the Herschel space telescope. This sensor is used to control the displacement of the interferometer's moving mirrors and to sample the interferograms. This development addresses the following points: minimization of the effects of cooling critical optical parts, introduction of a fully redundant focal plane, selection of optoelectronic components efficient at 4 K, and design of a cryogenic preamplifier.

We present an analysis of the diffraction effects from a segmented aperture with a very large number of segments-prototype of the next generation of extremely large telescopes. This analysis is based on the point-spread-function analytical calculation for Keck-type hexagonal segmentation geometry. We concentrate on the effects that lead to the appearance of speckles and/or a regular pattern of diffraction peaks. These effects are related to random piston and tip-tilt errors on each segment, gaps between segments, and segment edge distortion. We deliver formulas and the typical numerical values for the Strehl ratio, the relative intensity of higher-order diffraction peaks, and the averaged intensity of speckles associated with each particular case of segmentation error.

We present an analysis of point-spread functions for segmented mirrors affected by random tip-tilt errors on each segment. In addition to Strehl ratio evaluation, this analysis considers key characteristics such as the intensity and the location of speckles and secondary peaks and the relative energy distribution between these features. We develop a method to describe the shape of a nonaveraged point-spread function and deduce the final expressions for ensemble-averaged characteristics. Based on Keck-type hexagonal segmentation geometry, our study is extended to an arbitrary number of segments, and we describe qualitatively the transition from the case of a mirror with few segments to that of a mirror with several hundred segments--prototype of the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes.

As micro-optical components are introduced into optical systems, accurate surface characterization becomes important. We describe a method for quantitative evaluation of surface deformations based on Foucault's knife-edge test. By measurement of local slopes, the surface shape of each mirror in a micromirror array has been reconstructed with a subnanometer accuracy. In addition to low-order deformation (tilt, curvature, astigmatism), each mirror is seen to be palm-tree shaped. This may be explained by strain relaxation in the fabrication process. Measurement on a conventional concave mirror confirms our method.

To illustrate the efficiency of using a deformable plane mirror to record holographic gratings, we have computed the three gratings for the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Their working conditions are severe, since they have to correct the residual spherical aberration of the Hubble Space Telescope. Nevertheless, all images obtained are largely diffraction limited with regard to the resolution.
