One hundred eighty-eight Jewish individuals who either they or whose both parents were born in Iraq were typed for 7 blood groups (ABO, MNS, Rh, Kell, Duffy, P and Kidd), 12 red cell enzyme systems and 2 serum proteins. Iraqi Jews are characterized by a high frequency of A (in ABO), N (in MNS), low cde (Rh) and low Hp-1. Several rare electrophoretic variants were encountered: PGM1 6-1, PHI 3-1 and PHI 2-1, and an unidentified AK phenotype. No evidence of Negroid admixture was found in their gene pool. Comparisons with results previously obtained in Iraqi Jews show general similarities in frequencies while comparisons with neighboring non-Jewish populations suggest divergence in most systems investigated. The difficulties of assessing relationships on the basis of a few selected differences and the need for careful interpretations of similarities are emphasized.

Two generations of a family with autosomal dominant carpal tunnel syndrome were studied for genetic linkage to 20 informative polymorphic blood markers. No linkage was demonstrated between the syndrome and the markers tested; exclusion of close linkage (lod score less than -2.0) was found for MNSs, ACP, GALT, GPT, GLO, Hp, Gc, and Pi.

Two communities of Jews living in Israel were selected for study. They consisted of Jews from Kurdistan and from the Yemen. They lived in five villages in the Negev area of Israel where the climate is hot in the summer months and cool to warm in the winter months. Studies were carried out in the summer (June, July) and in the winter (January, February). The studies were confined to the age group 20 to 30, and 75% of the population in this age group were examined. The investigations comprised: (a) clinical examination, (b) anthropometric measurements, (c) genetic study of blood markers, (d) habitual activity, (e) energy expenditure, (f) food intake, (g) climatic exposure, (h) measurement of physical work capacity, and (i) reaction to a standardized heat test. The environmental conditions of the subjects were similar for the two groups and the majority were engaged in farming.

A deterministic questionnaire method for zygosity determination is developed for use in epidemiological studies of adult twins. It is based on the answers of both members of a twin pair to two questions on similarity and confusion in childhood. The algorithm of the method is used to determine the zygosity status of a twin pair at two different levels of certainty. The validity of the method is tested by making blood marker determinations of 11 polymorphic marker systems fro a random sample of 104 twin pairs. The agreement between questionnaire and blood marker diagnosis was 100%, but the stricter level of certainty left 8.7% in the nonclassified group. The genetical representativeness of the sample is tested by the allele distribution of the markers as compared to the Finnish population data as well as by the distribution of the number of intra-pair differences in blood markers.

Two kindreds of lattice corneal dystrophy (LCD) [McKusick, 1983, catalog No. 12220] were studied for linkage. Fifty-one relatives were examined clinically, and 27 affected and 24 normal persons were ascertained. Tight linkage could be excluded for 15 informative markers with LOD scores of less than -2.0. The largest positive LOD score was 0.56 at 0 = 0.17 for linkage between haptoglobin and LCD. Combined with a previous study, the combined LOD score is 0.96.

SynopsisFamilies with more than one member affected by schizophrenia were identified and their members were interviewed. Four standardized diagnostic definitions (PSE, DSM-III, ICD-9, Feighner) were applied to all subjects who were classified as schizophrenic or not schizophrenic according to each definition. Non-schizophrenic psychiatric disorders which have been shown to be familially associated with schizophrenia were also identified. Twenty blood markers were ascertained for all subjects and evidence of co-segregation with schizophrenia was sought. No selective segregation was found and therefore there was no evidence suggesting linkage or supporting a monogenic theory of transmission of susceptibility to schizophrenia.

This study is part of a general survey aimed at investigating the genetic variability of blood markers in Sardinia(1). Sardinia island was long since an isolated region where malignant malarian endemia would impress a peculiar selective pressure(2). For this reason special attention has been as yet paid by Anthropologists and Geneticists to the structure of Sardinian populations. Thus detailed maps aeepresently available of the distribution of erythrocyte markers (3). Conversely data are still lacking on further classes of markers, such as serum isoproteins. The purpose of this study is to contribute at filling the lack of data concerning two major isoprotein systems (Gc and PI) in Cagliari and Nuoro. One more reason to acquire more data on serum markers is that they are needed for biostatistical analysis of paternity.

Anthropological studies were done on 1276 Libyans from the Mediterranean cities of Tripoli and Benghazi, and from Sabha southward in The Sahara. The incidences of hemoglobin (Hb)-S and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) deficiency were low in the coastal areas and significantly high in Sabha. Hb-C occurred sporadically in Tripoli and Sabha, and was absent from Benghazi in the east. One case of Hb-J Benghazi was noted. There were no significant differences in the ABO blood group and Rh0 (D) type distributions in the three localities. G-6-PD gene GdA frequency was significantly high in Sabha. The lowest value of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6-PGD) gene PGDA frequency and highest value of the gene PGDC were in Sabha. Adenylate kinase (AK) gene AK2 was only detectable in Tripoli. Acid phosphatase (AP) gene Pa frequency in Sabha was more than twice that in Tripoli and Benghazi, while Pc was distinctly lower in Sabha than in the northern cities. Haptoglobin gene Hp1 frequency was almost identical in all areas. Anthropometric measurements revealed overall homogeneity of the three samples, closer similarity in the coastal region to adjacent North African populations, and Negroid influence in the Saharan Libyans. Anthropometry substantiated findings from blood markers.

A sample of 153 individuals from a Druze village, in northern Israel, was typed for the following genetic markers--ABO, MNSs, Rh, P, Kell, and Duffy in the blood groups AcP, AK, ADA, EsD, GL01, ICD, LDH, G6PD, PGM 1 & 2, PHI, PGD and peptidases A, B, C, and D in the red cell enzymes and for the serum proteins Hp and GC subtypes. Rare variants were observed in the following systems: PGD, a new slow variant, PGM, type 8-1; Pep A, types 2-1 and 3-1, Pep B, type 2-1; Pep D, types 3-1 and 3-3; and type GC, 2-V. Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg expectations were observed for MNSs and Duffy because of increased homozygosity, which was also observed in three other systems. Gene frequencies compared well with those of Arab Druze and Moslems in Lebanon and of Israeli Moslems in most of the systems, except for the lower frequencies of blood group B, the NS chromosome, the cde haplotype, and the AcPA allele in the present sample. A considerably lower frequency of the Fy allele was found in the Druze compared with Arab Moslems. It may be due to the Druze having been less exposed to inflow of African genes, to their being highlanders, and, therefore, less exposed to Plasmodium vivax malaria, or to both of the above.

Summary. The genetic distances separating 14 Spanish goat breeds are calculated from gene frequency data of 14 genetic blood markers (GSH, Ke, Hb, Dia, Ct, MDH, CA, X, NP, Alp, Am, Cp, Tf and Al). Working from the matrix of Nei's genetic distances we drew a dendrogram demonstrating a great genetic similarity among populations from Negra Serrana, Zamorana, Guadarrama, Retinta, Blanca Andaluza, Berciana and Pirenaica on one hand; and Canaria, Murciana, Blanca Celtiberica, Verata, Palmera, Malaguena and Granadina on the other. We discuss the similarities and differences within our classification using gene frequency data of the blood genetic markers studied, and classifications based chiefly on morphological and production data.

Not all heavy drinkers develop severe alcoholic liver disease. Genetic factors are probably involved, but no corresponding useful markers have been developed thus far. Of greater practical applicability is the recognition of early changes in the liver that may indicate that the process of scarring or fibrosis has been initiated. Measurement of breakdown products of collagen, the protein of the fibrotic tissue, have been found to be useful for detecting these early stages. Assessment of glutamic dehydrogenase activity in the serum also provides some indication of the degree of inflammation and necrosis present in the liver, but not of the alcohol intake. The severity of the latter can be assessed with a variety of biological markers, to which circulating antibodies against acetaldehyde adducts have recently been added.

Biochemical indices of AA clearly showed that the young men in this study were brought into various states of AA depletion and repletion according to their dietary AA intakes. While previous studies have postulated that supplemental intakes of AA may adversely affect body status of vitamins B6 and B12, we found no changes in the B vitamin status of the young men receiving varying AA intakes. Moderate AA supplementation (605 mg/day) showed no antagonistic effect on markers of vitamins B6 and B12. Blood markers of fat-soluble vitamins A and E and iron status were not affected by AA intakes. The propensity of the gingiva to become inflamed or bleed on probing was reduced after normal (65 mg/day) AA intakes as compared to deficient (5 mg/day) intakes and upon supplementary (605 mg/day) AA intakes as compared to normal intakes. The results suggest that AA status may influence early stages of gingival inflammation and crevicular bleeding, and warrant further study of the relationship between AA and periodontal health.

Once in a while blood group serologists have to determine genetic blood markers in older stored alcohol containing hemolytic and possibly contaminated blood samples for identity examination. In this matter the arising problems and especially the risk of false results have been discussed from OEPEN (1982), OSTERHAUS and BIRKNER (1982,1985) as well as STRATTON and RENTON (1958). In order to have an information in such cases whether the investigation of certain blood group systems is successful or not and about the possibly influencing factors we have analysed the results of 52 investigated samples.

To investigate the effects of different recovery strategies on fatigue markers following a prolonged running exercise. 46 recreational male runners completed a half-marathon, followed by active recovery (ACT), cold water immersion (CWI), massage (MAS) or passive recovery (PAS). Countermovement jump height, muscle soreness and perceived recovery and stress were measured 24h before the half-marathon (pre), immediately after the recovery intervention (postrec) and 24h after the race (post24). In addition, muscle contractile properties and blood markers of fatigue were determined at pre and post24. Magnitude-based inferences revealed substantial differences in the changes between the groups. At postrec, ACT was harmful to perceived recovery (ACT vs. PAS: effect size [ES] = -1.81) and serum concentration of creatine kinase (ACT vs. PAS: ES = 0.42), with CWI being harmful to jump performance (CWI vs. PAS: ES = -0.98). It was also beneficial for reducing muscle soreness (CWI vs. PAS: ES = -0.88) and improving perceived stress (CWI vs. PAS: ES = -0.64), with MAS being beneficial for reducing muscle soreness (MAS vs. PAS: ES = -0.52) and improving perceived recovery (MAS vs. PAS: ES = 1.00). At post24, both CWI and MAS were still beneficial for reducing muscle soreness (CWI vs. PAS: ES = 1.49; MAS vs. PAS: ES = 1.12), with ACT being harmful to perceived recovery (ACT vs. PAS: ES = -0.68), serum concentration of creatine kinase (ACT vs. PAS: ES = 0.84) and free-testosterone (ACT vs. PAS: ES = -0.91). In recreational runners, a half-marathon results in fatigue symptoms lasting at least 24h. To restore subjective fatigue measures, the authors recommend CWI and MAS, as these recovery strategies are more effective than PAS, with ACT being even disadvantageous. However, runners must be aware that neither the use of ACT nor CWI or MAS had any beneficial effect on objective fatigue markers.

The predominant options are exercises with an emphasis on either concentric or eccentric contractions. Eccentric exercises promote greater strength gains compared to classical concentric stimuli, but can cause muscle damage. The aim of present study was to compare strength training composed of 10 sessions with progressive loads between groups with a predominance of concentric versus eccentric contraction through an analysis of isotonic strength, pressure pain threshold, creatine kinase, tumor necrosis factor-alpha and cortisol.Methods: One hundred twenty male subjects were divided into four groups: C1 and E1 - single session of maximum strength with emphasis on concentric and eccentric contraction, respectively; C10 and E10 - 10 sessions with progressive loads from 80% to maximum strength with emphasis on concentric and eccentric contraction, respectively.Results: Isotonic strength increased by 10% in E10 following the ten training sessions. C1 and E1 exhibited a lower pressure pain threshold 48 hours after the sessions in comparison to C10 and E10, respectively.
