Abstract

As with many other nations, the passenger motor vehicle industry has long been central to the economic health of Australia. In addition, the purchase of a motor vehicle is a commitment of considerable magnitude to most consumers. As a result, the passenger motor vehicle industry has attracted the attention an interest of a wide and diverse range of groups who have brought to bear a multitude of often-conflicting concerns and interests. Nowhere has this been more apparent that in the development and execution of industry policy. This thesis examines the development and application of Australian passenger motor vehicle industry policy from the turn of the twentieth century until the mid-1990s.

Abstract

The rapid expansion, problems and prospects of Spanish industry : the case of car manufacturing. Within three decades, Spain has risen to the rank of sixth car-producing country in the world. This expansion is due to, first, European manufacturers, then American manufacturers moving in, attracted originally by the penetration a rapidly expanding and hitherto protected market, then by the prospects opened up by Spain's joining the E.E.C. Since the late 1970s, the sector has been experiencing grave difficulties and must be restructured in the image of the principal national manufacturer SEAT, which has been bought by the firm Volkswagen., En trois décennies, l'Espagne s'est élevée au rang de 6ème producteur mondial d'automobiles. Cet essor est dû à l'installation de constructeurs européens d'abord, américains ensuite, attirés à l'origine par la pénétration d'un marché en plein essor et longtemps protégé, puis par les perspectives offertes par l'intégration de l'Espagne à la C.E.E. Depuis la fin des années 70 le secteur connaît de graves difficultés et doit se restructurer, à l'image du principal producteur national SEAT, qui a été racheté par la firme Volkswagen., Desarrollo, problemas y perspectives de la industrie española : el caso de la construcción automóvil. Durante tres decadas, España ha subido al sexto puesto mundial de los productores automóviles. Este desarrollo se debe a la instalación de constructores europeos, y despuès americanos, atraídos al principio por la penetración de un mercado en plena expansión y protegido desde hacía mucho, y luego por les perspectivas que presentaba la integración de Espana en la CEE. Abstract

Journal of Traffic and Transportation Engineering (English Edition), 3(3), 226-235., The objective of this paper is to incorporate vehicle mix in stimulus-response car-following models. Separate models were estimated for acceleration and deceleration responses to account for vehicle mix via both movement state and vehicle type. For each model, three sub-models were developed for different pairs of following vehicles including “automobile following automobile,” “automobile following truck,” and “truck following automobile.” The estimated model parameters were then validated against other data from a similar region and roadway. The results indicated that drivers' behaviors were significantly different among the different pairs of following vehicles. Also the magnitude of the estimated parameters depends on the type of vehicle being driven and/or followed. These results demonstrated the need to use separate models depending on movement state and vehicle type. The differences in parameter estimates confirmed in this paper highlight traffic safety and operational issues of mixed traffic operation on a single lane. The findings of this paper can assist transportation professionals to improve traffic simulation models used to evaluate the impact of different strategies on ameliorate safety and performance of highways. In addition, driver response time lag estimates can be used in roadway design to calculate important design parameters such as stopping sight distance on horizontal and vertical curves for both automobiles and trucks.

424. Modelling Economy-wide Effects of Future Automotive Assistance

Abstract

The Commission’s modelling indicates that there would be economy–wide benefits from further reductions in assistance to the automotive sector, particularly for tariffs. It also suggests that the benefits would be larger under the current assistance reduction program than options entailing lesser reductions. The model projected potential net benefits to the community of some $0.5 billion a year under this program, with gains to consumers and other industries outweighing negative impacts on the automotive industry. Modelling also confirms that a significant further appreciation of Australia’s currency, associated with the mining boom, would have a much greater impact on the automotive industry than scheduled tariff reductions. In the Commission’s assessment, these conclusions are not materially affected by consideration of factors, such as adjustment costs and scale economies, not captured directly by the model.

Abstract

Semisolid forming is an hybrid process between forging and casting, that is based on the thixotropic properties of some alloys that have been shake during their solidification process. This new process presents some advantages compared with traditional processes, like less quantity of defects than in die casting parts, or the chance to obtain more complicated parts than in forging processes, to mention some. In this article is presented the work that is being carried out at MGEP in the field of semisolid forming of aluminium alloys. Microstructural and thermodynamic quality factors which allow to characterize the material thixotropic behaviour are described. El proceso de conformado en estado semisólido es un proceso híbrido entre la fundición y la conformación por deformación, que se basa en las propiedades tixotrópicas que presentan algunos materiales que han sido agitados durante su proceso de solidificación. Este nuevo proceso presenta una serie de ventajas respecto a los procesos tradicionales, como son un menor número de defectos que las piezas inyectadas o la posibilidad de conformar formas más complejas que por deformación en estado sólido, por citar algunos. En este artículo se presenta el trabajo que se está realizando en MGEP en el campo del conformado en estado semisólido de aleaciones de aluminio. Se describen los indicadores de calidad, tanto microestructurales como termodinámicos, que permiten caracterizar la adecuada tixotropía del material.
