Although the contact electrification (CE) (or usually called ‘triboelectrification’) effect has been known for over 2600 years, its scientific mechanism still remains debated after decades. Interest in studying CE has been recently revisited due to the invention of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which are the most effective approach for converting random, low-frequency mechanical energy (called high entropy energy) into electric power for distributed energy applications. This review is composed of three parts that are coherently linked, ranging from basic physics, through classical electrodynamics, to technological advances and engineering applications. First, the mechanisms of CE are studied for general cases involving solids, liquids and gas phases. Various physics models are presented to explain the fundamentals of CE by illustrating that electron transfer is the dominant mechanism for CE for solid–solid interfaces. Electron transfer also occurs in the CE at liquid–solid and liquid–liquid interfaces. An electron-cloud overlap model is proposed to explain CE in general. This electron transfer model is extended to liquid–solid interfaces, leading to a revision of the formation mechanism of the electric double layer at liquid–solid interfaces. Second, by adding a time-dependent polarization term P s created by the CE-induced surface electrostatic charges in the displacement field D , we expand Maxwell’s equations to include both the medium polarizations due to electric field ( P ) and mechanical aggitation and medium boundary movement induced polarization term ( P s). From these, the output power, electromagnetic (EM) behaviour and current transport equation for a TENG are systematically derived from first principles. A general solution is presented for the modified Maxwell’s equations, and analytical solutions for the output potential are provided for a few cases. The displacement current arising from ε∂E/∂t is responsible for EM waves, while the newly added term ∂ P s/∂t is responsible for energy and sensors. This work sets the standard theory for quantifying the performance and EM behaviour of TENGs in general. Finally, we review the applications of TENGs for harvesting all kinds of available mechanical energy that is wasted in our daily life, such as human motion, walking, vibration, mechanical triggering, rotating tires, wind, flowing water and more. A summary is provided about the applications of TENGs in energy science, environmental protection, wearable electronics, self-powered sensors, medical science, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Summary Harvesting mechanical energy via a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising strategy for solving energy problems. However, it is necessary to develop an effective and safe energy managing circuit for preventing high voltage breaking electronic devices. Here, a universal managing circuit is developed to optimize TENG's output performance, which for the first time allows the TENG to safely power various sensor systems with a safe and stable voltage. Based on the circuit, TENG's output can be transformed into a stable voltage with tunable amplitude, while an enhanced short-circuit current of 94 mA with an energy loss lower than 5% is achieved. For demonstrations, three different types of TENGs, respectively, targeting at ocean energy, wind energy, and walking energy have been prepared to reveal the capability of the circuit. TENG-based electro-tactile system has the advantages of simple system, low cost, and zero power consumption., Tactile sensation plays important roles in virtual reality and augmented reality systems. Here, a self-powered, painless, and highly sensitive electro-tactile (ET) system for achieving virtual tactile experiences is proposed on the basis of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and ET interface formed of ball-shaped electrode array. Electrostatic discharge triggered by TENG can induce notable ET stimulation, while controlled distance between the ET electrodes and human skin can regulate the induced discharge current. The ion bombardment technique has been used to enhance the electrification capability of triboelectric polymer. Accordingly, TENG with a contact area of 4 cm2 is capable of triggering discharge, leading to a compact system. In this skin-integrated ET interface, touching position and motion trace on the TENG surface can be precisely reproduced on skin. This TENG-based ET system can work for many fields, including virtual tactile displays, Braille instruction, intelligent protective suits, or even nerve stimulation.

Fibrous energy-autonomy electronics are highly desired for wearable soft electronics, human-machine interfaces, and the Internet of Things. How to effectively integrate various functional energy fibers into them and realize versatile applications is an urgent need to be fulfilled. Here, a multifunctional coaxial energy fiber has been developed toward energy harvesting, energy storage, and energy utilization. The energy fiber is composed of an all fiber-shaped triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), supercapacitor (SC), and pressure sensor in a coaxial geometry. The inner core is a fibrous SC by a green activation strategy for energy storage; the outer sheath is a fibrous TENG in single-electrode mode for energy harvesting, and the outer friction layer and inner layer (covered with Ag) constitute a self-powered pressure sensor. The electrical performances of each energy component are systematically investigated. The fibrous SC shows a length specific capacitance density of 13.42 mF·cm-1, good charging/discharging rate capability, and excellent cycling stability (∼96.6% retention). The fibrous TENG shows a maximum power of 2.5 μW to power an electronic watch and temperature sensor. The pressure sensor has a good enough sensitivity of 1.003 V·kPa-1 to readily monitor the real-time finger motions and work as a tactile interface. The demonstrated energy fibers have exhibited stable electrochemical and mechanical performances under mechanical deformation, which make them attractive for wearable electronics. The demonstrated soft and multifunctional coaxial energy fiber is also of great significance in a sustainable human-machine interactive system, intelligent robotic skin, security tactile switches, etc.

Efficient conversion of mechanical energy in our surrounding environment into electric power has become a promising strategy for meeting the ever-increasing energy consumption of small and distributed electronics. The contact-electrification-based triboelectric nanogenerators are one of the emerging devices to achieve such energy conversion. However, conventional contact electrifications between two insulators are limited by their low current density and alternating current output. Here we report a nanoscale contact electrification induced direct current output based on the flow of electrons from the defect states of the ZnO nanowires-packed film to the contact sliding conductive AFM tip. Combining experimental materials characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the direct current output is closely related to the concentration of oxygen vacancy defect states on the surface of ZnO nanowires: the higher the oxygen vacancy concentration, the higher the current output. Under optimized conditions, we obtain an ultrahigh current density of ~108 A m-2, which is several orders of magnitude higher than that of the conventional contact electrification and other effects. This work provides a new route of utilizing defect states contributed contact electrification for realizing nanoscale mechanical energy scavenging.

Maintaining a high working frequency is critical one of technical solutions to the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for improving its output power. Herein, we report a 3D-printed bearing-structural TENG (BS-TENG), which achieved a speed breakthrough of nearly 1500 rpm for the first time by 3D-printing diversified design whereby to enable even higher working frequency. Integrated BS-TENGs network can be utilized as both rotational energy harvester and self-powered high speed sensing system for vehicle temperature and speed real-time monitoring. It was vital that one unit delivers a peak power of 0.96 mW under an external load of 8 MΩ. Moreover, a capacitor of 1000 µF was charged by integrated energy harvester to achieve voltage of 4 V that just take nearly 80 s under rotational speed of 600 rpm. Furthermore, the results confirmed that the accuracy of the self-powered vehicle speed monitoring could more than 99% level under a wide range of 100 to 1500 rpm. This study not only presents a new approach for upgrading the working frequency of TENGs, but also provides new opportunities for TENGs in intelligent vehicle autonomous driving system.

Despite the great potential of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as a promising energy harvesting technology, their practical applications are still hindered by their pulsed outputs with a high crest factor. Here, through a simple and easy method involving electrode misalignment (EM) and circuit connection, an exceedingly stable direct current (DC) multi-phase TENG (MP-TENG) with a high average output power at a constant current is developed. The MP-TENG obtained by rectifying and superimposing TENG units with phase difference in parallel can realize an ultra-low crest factor of 1.05 and an average power increase of 40.1%, compared with conventional single-phase TENGs. Besides, when using rotator grids with different sizes from the electrodes and the EM method, the common materials in daily life such as wood and cloth fabrics have been applied to generate DC-like outputs with a crest factor of less than 1.1, which expands dramatically the selection range of TENG materials. Due to the excellent DC performance of the MP-TENG, 1000 LEDs and 54 bulbs can be easily lighted up without any flickers, and commercial electronics can be driven continuously to work stably. This work provides a paradigm shift to achieve a high-output constant direct current, which has widespread application prospects in the field of energy harvesting.

Summary Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is considered as a potential solution to harvest distributed energy for the sustainable and reliable power supply of the internet of things. Although numerous researches on alternating current (AC) output TENG from fundamental physics to potential applications have been widely promoted in recent years, the studies about direct current (DC) output TENG is just beginning, especially for a constant current output. This work gives the summary of recent key researches from AC-TENG to DC-TENG, especially a constant current TENG, as well as the design of AC/DC-TENG. In addition, some new DC generators will also be summarized toward a wide range of readers. This study presents the similarities and differences between AC-TENG and DC-TENG, so that their impact and uniqueness can be clearly understood. The tactile peripheral nervous system innervating human hands, which is essential for sensitive haptic exploration and dexterous object manipulation, features overlapped receptive fields in the skin, arborization of peripheral neurons and many-to-many synaptic connections. Inspired by the structural features of the natural system, we report a supersensitive artificial slowly adapting tactile afferent nervous system based on the triboelectric nanogenerator technology. Using tribotronic transistors in the design of mechanoreceptors, the artificial afferent nervous system exhibits the typical adapting behaviours of the biological counterpart in response to mechanical stimulations. The artificial afferent nervous system is self-powered in the transduction and event-driven in the operation. Moreover, it has inherent proficiency of neuromorphic signal processing, delivering a minimum resolvable dimension two times smaller than the inter-receptor distance which is the lower limit of the dimension that existing electronic skins can resolve. These results open up a route to scalable neuromorphic skins aiming at the level of human’s exceptional perception for neurorobotic and neuroprosthetic applications.

Using an 8-band k ⋅ p model it is demonstrated through the combination of strain and piezoelectricity that increasing the InN quantum-well thickness of a GaN-InN-GaN device changes the InN material from a positive bandgap semiconductor to a topological insulator (negative bandgap). Moderate strain tuning of a four monolayer InN layer for a GaN-InN-GaN device reveals a giant (one order of magnitude) tuning of current–voltage characteristics. It is verified that piezoelectricity plays an important role in controlling electron transport through the InN layer.

We describe a complete, flux-density-limited sample of galaxies at redshift $0.8 < z < 1.3$ selected at 16 micron. At the selection wavelength near 8 micron rest, the observed emission comes both from dust heated by intense star formation and from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the sample galaxies to local-galaxy templates reveals that more than half the galaxies have SEDs dominated by star formation. About one sixth of the galaxy SEDs are dominated by an AGN, and nearly all the rest of the SEDs are composite. Comparison with X-ray and far-infrared observations shows that combinations of luminosities at rest-frame 4.5 and 8 micron give good measures of both AGN luminosity and star-formation rate. The sample galaxies mostly follow the established star-forming main sequence for $z=1$ galaxies, but of the galaxies more than 0.5 dex above that main sequence, more than half have AGN-type SEDs. Similarly, the most luminous AGNs tend to have higher star-formation rates than the main sequence value. Galaxies with stellar masses $>$10$^{11}$\,\Msun\ are unlikely to host an AGN. As a low consumption and high efficiency process, Partial Nitrification-Anammox/denitratation (PNAD) was applied to co-treat mature landfill leachate with municipal sewage for 300 days. Specifically, ammonia (670.2 ± 63.7 mg N/L) contained in mature landfill leachate was firstly oxidized to nitrite (611.5 ± 28.1 mg N/L) in sequence batch reactor (SBRPN); meanwhile, organic matter in municipal sewage was partially removed in another reactor (SBROMR); finally, nitrite produced (611.5 ± 28.1 mg N/L) in SBRPN and ammonia (53.1 ± 6.4 mg N/L) residing in pretreated municipal sewage were simultaneously degraded through combined Anammox-denitratation process in an up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASBAD). A satisfactory effluent quality of 10.3 mg/L TN was obtained after long-term operation, with Anammox and denitrification contributing to 86.2% and 5.8% nitrogen removal efficiency, respectively. Mass balance confirmed 67.2% nitrate generated from Anammox could be reduced to nitrite and in-situ reused. Anammox bacteria genes and nitrate reductase/nitrite reductase ratio were highly detected, accelerating combined Anammox-denitratation. Further, Ca. Brocadia triumph among various Anammox bacteria groups, increasing from 1.2% (day 120) to 3.6% (day 280).

During natural tissue regeneration, tissue microenvironment and stem cell niche including cell-cell interaction, soluble factors, and extracellular matrix (ECM) provide a train of biochemical and biophysical cues for modulation of cell behaviors and tissue functions. Design of functional biomaterials to mimic the tissue/cell microenvironment have great potentials for tissue regeneration applications. Recently, electroactive biomaterials have drawn increasing attentions not only as scaffolds for cell adhesion and structural support, but also as modulators to regulate cell/tissue behaviors and function, especially for electrically excitable cells and tissues. More importantly, electrostimulation can further modulate a myriad of biological processes, from cell cycle, migration, proliferation and differentiation to neural conduction, muscle contraction, embryogenesis, and tissue regeneration. In this review, endogenous bioelectricity and piezoelectricity are introduced. Then, design rationale of electroactive biomaterials is discussed for imitating dynamic cell microenvironment, as well as their mediated electrostimulation and the applying pathways. Recent advances in electroactive biomaterials are systematically overviewed for modulation of stem cell fate and tissue regeneration, mainly including nerve regeneration, bone tissue engineering, and cardiac tissue engineering. Finally, the significance for simulating the native tissue microenvironment is emphasized and the open challenges and future perspectives of electroactive biomaterials are concluded.

Power generation from human sweat has attracted great attention due to its potential application in waste energy scavenging. However, the development of methods to generate sufficient electricity from sweat to power electronic devices for health monitoring remains a major challenge. Here, we report a wearable sweat-based electricity generator (SEG), in which the power generation mechanism is based on the redox reaction between sweat and electrodes. Due to the increase in oxygen adsorption, both the output current and power of SEG with single-walled carbon nanotubes modified electrode can be remarkably enhanced by 5.6 and 14.7 times compared to SEG with a nanotube-free electrode, respectively. The SEGs have been first utilized to power a wireless heart-rate sensor for sustainably transmitting heart-rate data to a smart phone. Moreover, self-powered sensing of lactic acid has been achieved by electric signals with the current sensitivity of 11.79 mmol·L-1·mA-1, demonstrating applications in human health care.

As a new-era of energy harvesting technology, the enhancement of triboelectric charge density of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is always crucial for its large-scale application on Internet of Things (IoTs) and artificial intelligence (AI). Here, a microstructure-designed direct-current TENG (MDC-TENG) with rationally patterned electrode structure is presented to enhance its effective surface charge density by increasing the efficiency of contact electrification. Thus, the MDC-TENG achieves a record high charge density of ~5.4 mC m−2, which is over 2-fold the state-of-art of AC-TENGs and over 10-fold compared to previous DC-TENGs. The MDC-TENG realizes both the miniaturized device and high output performance. Meanwhile, its effective charge density can be further improved as the device size increases. Our work not only provides a miniaturization strategy of TENG for the application in IoTs and AI as energy supply or self-powered sensor, but also presents a paradigm shift for large-scale energy harvesting by TENGs., Low charge density is the bottleneck for the applications of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Here, the authors demonstrate a microstructure-designed direct-current TENG with rationally patterned electrode structure to enhance its effective charge density to a new milestone.

The Triboelectric Nanogenerator has demonstrated broad applications in energy, environmental, and electronic fields, as well as huge potential in the mechanism study of contact electrification, since 2012. Herein, we employed a Triboelectric Nanogenerator working in vertical contact-separation mode to study the electrification performance of the polymer under redox atmosphere. The results show that the electron-withdrawing ability of the polymer is weakened with increasing O3 concentration. Considering that O3 is typically one of the strongest oxidants, we further studied the electrification performance under H2, CO, and O2 atmosphere. It is found that the electron-withdrawing ability was predictably weakened under O2 atmosphere similar to the case of O3. On the contrary, the electron-withdrawing ability was enhanced under H2 and CO atmosphere. Accordingly, a theoretical mechanism involving the highest occupied surface state level is proposed to explain the effect of redox atmosphere on contact electrification. These results clarify that contact electrification can be varied by redox agents. Conversely, it also suggests the possibility to manipulate the redox reactions through the modification of contact electrification.

The cell type-specific molecular pathology of post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) in the hippocampus has not been thoroughly elucidated. We analyzed 27,069 cells by using single-cell RNA sequencing, and four oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC) subtypes were identified, Vcan+ OPCs, which were determined to be the primary cluster among them. Additionally, we examined the features of endothelial cells (ECs) and found that Lcn2+ ECs might play neuroprotective roles via Vwf after stroke. These results may facilitate further studies attempting to identify new avenues of research and novel targets for PSCI treatment.

Textile-based triboelectric nanogenerators (T-TENGs), combining the functions of energy harvesting and self-powered sensing with advantages of breathability and flexibility, have received intensive attention, which is vital to the rapid advancements in smart textiles. However, there exists few reports of T-TENGs applied to fires under the intelligent era of high requirements for devices with versatility and multiscenario practicability. Here, in combination with flame-retardant conductive cotton fabric, polytetrafluoroethylene-coated cotton fabric, and a divider, a low-cost and environmentally friendly flame-retardant textile-based triboelectric nanogenerator (FT-TENG) is developed, which is endowed with excellent fire resistance and outstanding energy harvesting capabilities. The cotton fabrics treated with a layer-by-layer self-assembly method show great self-extinguishing performance. Besides, the maximum peak power density of the FT-TENG can reach 343.19 mW/m2 under the tapping frequency of 3 Hz. Furthermore, the FT-TENG still keeps 49.2% of the initial electrical output even after being burned at 17 different positions; 34.48% of the electrical output is also retained when the FT-TENG is exposed to 220 °C. Moreover, the FT-TENGs are successfully applied as energy harvesters for firefighters and self-powered sensors for forest self-rescue and fire alarm systems. This work may provide a promising potential for multifunctional smart textiles in energy harvesting, self-powered sensing, and life or property security.

The human metabolome provides a window into the mechanisms and biomarkers of various diseases. However, because of limited availability, many sample types are still difficult to study by metabolomic analyses. Here, we present a mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics strategy that only consumes sub-nanoliter sample volumes. The approach consists of combining a customized metabolomics workflow with a pulsed MS ion generation method, known as triboelectric nanogenerator inductive nanoelectrospray ionization (TENGi nanoESI) MS. Samples tested with this approach include exhaled breath condensate collected from cystic fibrosis patients as well as in vitro-cultured human mesenchymal stromal cells. Both test samples are only available in minimum amounts. Experiments show that picoliter-volume spray pulses suffice to generate high-quality spectral fingerprints, which increase the information density produced per unit sample volume. This TENGi nanoESI strategy has the potential to fill in the gap in metabolomics where liquid chromatography-MS-based analyses cannot be applied. Our method opens up avenues for future investigations into understanding metabolic changes caused by diseases or external stimuli., The analysis of metabolites offers promises in biomarker discovery. Melatonin, widely found in various plants as a new antioxidant, could protect plants from various biotic and/or abiotic stresses, including salt stress. MzASMT 1 (KJ123721), a gene from Malus zumi Mats, is a key enzyme required for melatonin synthesis. However, whether the overexpression of MzASMT 1 could regulate the synthesis of melatonin and improve the salt tolerance in tobacco remains unknown. In this study, the overexpression of MzASMT 1 in tobacco increased the melatonin content, and the transgenic lines owned higher salt tolerance capacity. The transgenic lines overexpressing MzASMT 1 exhibited lower degree of leaf wilting; much more fresh weight; higher plant height; longer root; higher relative water content (RWC) of leaves, stem, and root; and higher chlorophyll content and Fv/Fm, which makes transgenic lines better adapt to salt stress. The transgenic lines also had higher accumulation of proline, lower accumulation of malondialdehyde (MDA), and improved antioxidant systems, which protected plants from cell damage and oxidative stress due to excess reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation under salt treatment. The transcription of salt response genes was much more highly activated in transgenic lines than in wild type under salt stress. The above results contributed to the understanding of functions for MzASMT 1 in tobacco under salt stress and provided a new choice for the application of MzASMT 1 in improving plant salt tolerance.

In the new era of the Internet-of-Things, athletic big data collection and analysis based on widely distributed sensing networks are particularly important in the development of intelligent sports. Conventional sensors usually require an external power supply, with limitations such as limited lifetime and high maintenance cost. As a newly developed mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered sensing technology, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) shows great potential to overcome these limitations. Most importantly, TENGs can be fabricated using wood, paper, fibers, and polymers, which are the most frequently used materials for sports. Recent progress on the development of TENGs for the field of intelligent sports is summarized. First, the working mechanism of TENG and its association with athletic big data are introduced. Subsequently, the development of TENG-based sports sensing systems, including smart sports facilities and wearable equipment is highlighted. At last, the remaining challenges and open opportunities are also discussed.

As an emerging technology for harvesting mechanical energy, low surface charge density greatly hinders the practical applications of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). Here, a high-performance TENG based on charge shuttling is demonstrated. Unlike conventional TENGs with static charges fully constrained on the dielectric surface, the device works based on the shuttling of charges corralled in conduction domains. Driven by the interaction of two quasi-symmetrical domains, shuttling of two mirror charge carriers can be achieved to double the charge output. Based on the mechanism, an ultrahigh projected charge density of 1.85 mC m−2 is obtained in ambient conditions. An integrated device for water wave energy harvesting is also presented, confirming its feasibility for practical applications. The device provides insights into new modes of TENGs using unfixed charges in domains, shedding a new light on high-performance mechanical energy harvesting technology., Conventionally, triboelectric nanogenerators are based on static charges fixed on dielectric surfaces. Here, the authors report a new mechanism using shuttling of mirror charge carriers corralled in quasi-symmetrical conduction domains, which boosts performance for blue energy harvesting.

Ferroelectric materials have drawn widespread attention due to their switchable spontaneous polarization and anomalous photovoltaic effect. The coupling between ferroelectricity and the piezo-phototronic effect may lead to the design of distinctive photoelectric devices with multifunctional features. Here, we report an enhancement of the photovoltaic performances in the ferroelectric p-type La-doped bismuth ferrite film (BLFO)/n-type zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire array heterojunction by rationally coupling the strain-induced piezoelectricity in ZnO nanowires and the ferroelectricity in BLFO. Under a compressive strain of -2.3% and a 10 V upward poling of the BLFO, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current density (JSC) of the device increase by 8.4% and 54.7%, respectively. Meanwhile, the rise (/decay) time is modulated from 153.7 (/108.8) to 61.28 (/74.86) ms. Systematical band diagram analysis reveals that the promotion of photogenerated carriers and boost of the photovoltaic performances of the device can be attributed to the modulated carrier transport behaviors at the BLFO/ZnO interface and the superposed driving forces arising from the adding up of the piezoelectric potential and ferroelectric polarization. In addition, COMSOL simulation results of piezopotential distribution in ZnO nanowire arrays and the energy band structure change of the heterojunction further confirm the mechanisms. This work not only presents an approach to design high-performance ferroelectric photovoltaic devices but also further broadens the research scope of piezo-phototronics.

The genus Lycoris (about 20 species) includes important medicinal and ornamental plants. Due to the similar morphological features and insufficient genomic resources, germplasm identification and molecular phylogeny analysis are very limited. Here, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genomes of L. chinensis, L. anhuiensis, and L. aurea, they have very similar morphological traits that make it difficult to identify. The full length of their cp genomes was nearly 158k bp with the same guanine-cytosine content of 37.8%. A total of 137 genes were annotated, including 87 protein-coding genes, 42 tRNAs, and eight rRNAs. A comparative analysis revealed the conservation in sequence size, GC content, and gene content. Some variations were observed in repeat structures, gene expansion on the IR-SC (Inverted Repeat-Single-Copy) boundary regions. Together with the cpSSR (chloroplast simple sequence repeats), these genetic variations are useful to develop molecular markers for germplasm identification. Phylogenetic analysis showed that seven Lycoris species were clustered into a monophyletic group, and closed to Narcissus in Amaryllidaceae. L. chinensis, L. anhuiensis, and L. longituba were clustered together, suggesting that they were very likely to be derived from one species, and had the same ancestor with L. squamigera. Our results provided information on the study of genetic diversity, origins or relatedness of native species, and the identification of cultivars.

A multifunctional self-powered sensor is developed for pressure, temperature, and material sensing., Flexible sensors are highly desirable for tactile sensing and wearable devices. Previous researches of smart elements have focused on flexible pressure or temperature sensors. However, realizing material identification remains a challenge. Here, we report a multifunctional sensor composed of hydrophobic films and graphene/polydimethylsiloxane sponges. By engineering and optimizing sponges, the fabricated sensor exhibits a high-pressure sensitivity of >15.22 per kilopascal, a fast response time of 3000 cycles. In the case of temperature stimulus, the sensor exhibits a temperature-sensing resolution of 1 kelvin via the thermoelectric effect. The sensor can generate output voltage signals after physical contact with different flat materials based on contact-induced electrification. The corresponding signals can be, in turn, used to infer material properties. This multifunctional sensor is excellent in its low cost and material identification, which provides a design concept for meeting the challenges in functional electronics.

Skin sensors are of paramount importance for flexible wearable electronics, which are active in medical diagnosis and healthcare monitoring. Ultrahigh sensitivity, large measuring range, and high skin conformability are highly desirable for skin sensors. Here, an ultrathin flexible piezoresistive sensor with high sensitivity and wide detection range is reported based on hierarchical nanonetwork structured pressure-sensitive material and nanonetwork electrodes. The hierarchical nanonetwork material is composed of silver nanowires (Ag NWs), graphene (GR), and polyamide nanofibers (PANFs). Among them, Ag NWs are evenly interspersed in a PANFs network, forming conductive pathways. Also, GR acts as bridges of crossed Ag NWs. The hierarchical nanonetwork structure and GR bridges of the pressure-sensitive material enable the ultrahigh sensitivity for the pressure sensor. More specifically, the sensitivity of 134 kPa-1 (0-1.5 kPa) and the low detection of 3.7 Pa are achieved for the pressure sensor. Besides, the nanofibers act as a backbone, which provides effective protection for Ag NWs and GR as pressure is applied. Hence, the pressure sensor possesses an excellent durability (>8000 cycles) and wide detection range (>75 kPa). Additionally, ultrathin property (7 μm) and nanonetwork structure provide high skin conformability for the pressure sensor. These superior performances lay a foundation for the application of pressure sensors in physiological signal monitoring and pressure spatial distribution detection.

Dripping liquid is one of the most common practices in chemistry, but one rarely thinks that the contact of liquid with air could introduce charges in the liquid, which may affect the chemical reaction. Here, we propose a functional dripping channel based on a liquid triboelectric nanogenerator (L-TENG) to effectively harvest energy from liquid droplets and sense their motion. The L-TENG is a hybrid of a grating-electrode L-TENG and a single-electrode L-TENG, which are for energy harvesting and sensing, respectively. When dripping from a funnel, the energy of the droplets can be successively harvested and stored. Meanwhile, the single-electrode L-TENG can identify the time interval for the liquid flow and the number of droplets, providing information on the chemical process. The device with enhanced energy harvesting and sensing functions should have great application prospects in intelligent laboratory systems and can also contribute to the optimization of the L-TENGs for harvesting liquid droplet energy.

Low-grade heat (below 373 kelvin) is abundant and ubiquitous but is mostly wasted because present recovery technologies are not cost-effective. The liquid-state thermocell (LTC), an inexpensive and scalable thermoelectric device, may be commercially viable for harvesting low-grade heat energy if its Carnot-relative efficiency (ηr) reaches ~5%, which is a challenging metric to achieve experimentally. We used a thermosensitive crystallization and dissolution process to induce a persistent concentration gradient of redox ions, a highly enhanced Seebeck coefficient (~3.73 millivolts per kelvin), and suppressed thermal conductivity in LTCs. As a result, we achieved a high ηr of 11.1% for LTCs near room temperature. Our device demonstration offers promise for cost-effective low-grade heat harvesting.

Long-term and low-dose photodynamic therapy for treating tumors requires a sustainable energy supply. The power source technology of batteries and wireless charging for driving a light-emitting diode (LED) may cause inconveniences during treatment. In addition, the development of telemedicine and Internet medicine put forward higher demands on treatment methods, such as better patient compliance and autonomous management. Here, we show a self-powered photodynamic therapy (s-PDT) system with two different irradiation modes that can be autonomously managed by patients. The as-fabricated s-PDT system based on a twinning structured piezoelectric nanogenerator is powered by energy harvested from body motion and realizes effective tumor tissue killing and inhibition. As demonstrated at the cellular level, the s-PDT system can significantly suppress tumor cell growth with the pulsed light stimulation mode. When the miniature LED was implanted subcutaneously in mice with transplanted tumors, the s-PDT system led to significant antitumor effects by irradiation with intermittent continuous light stimulation mode for 12 days, and an 87.46% tumor inhibition rate was obtained. This innovative s-PDT system combined with two treatment modes may provide a great opportunity to develop wearable/implantable and self-controllable devices for long-term photodynamic therapy, which would be a promising method for clinical cancer treatment.

An ocean wave contains various marine information, but it is generally difficult to obtain the high-precision quantification to meet the needs of ocean development and utilization. Here, we report a self-powered and high-performance triboelectric ocean-wave spectrum sensor (TOSS) fabricated using a tubular triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and hollow ball buoy, which not only can adapt to the measurement of ocean surface water waves in any direction but also can eliminate the influence of seawater on the performance of the sensor. Based on the high-sensitivity advantage of TENG, an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2530 mV mm-1 (which is 100 times higher than that of previous work) and a minimal monitoring error of 0.1% are achieved in monitoring wave height and wave period, respectively. Importantly, six basic ocean-wave parameters (wave height, wave period, wave frequency, wave velocity, wavelength, and wave steepness), wave velocity spectrum, and mechanical energy spectrum have been derived by the electrical signals of TOSS. Our finding not only can provide ocean-wave parameters but also can offer significant and accurate data support for cloud computing of ocean big data.

As an emerging branch of energy conversion technologies, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) pioneers a brand‐new path to effectively harness varieties of mechanical energies for the purpose of powering and/or sensing. Since its invention in 2012, the TENG has experienced a booming and revolutionary development in every respect, ranging from materials synthesis and modification, architecture design to performance optimization, power management, and application exploration. In comparison to the organic solar cell and organic light‐emitting diodes, TENG is a unique technique that opens the venue of using polymer materials (PMs) for harvesting mechanical energy. So far, by virtue of superior charge transfer and capturing capabilities during friction, various kinds of PMs have been developed and used as triboelectric materials in order to achieve high‐performance TENGs. Here, this work focuses on the utilization and development of PMs for the TENGs technology and first gives a summary of main PMs that are frequently adopted in currently reported energy‐harvesting TENGs. Second, several kinds of PMs used lately in a few novel TENGs for special or specific energy‐harvesting circumstances are introduced and highlighted. Finally, the perspectives on and challenges in developing high‐performance PMs toward TENGs technology are conceived and expected to be instructive to future research., As an emerging energy conversion technology, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) opens a venue of using polymer materials (PMs) for harvesting mechanical energy. For this study, the effects of thermal annealing and compressive strain rate on the complexity of the serration behavior in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) was investigated. Here, as-cast and thermally-annealed (300 &deg, C, 1 week) Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 BMG underwent room-temperature compression tests in the unconstrained condition at strain rates of 2 &times, 10&minus, 5 s&minus, 1 and 2 &times, 4 s&minus, 1. The complexity of the serrated flow was determined, using the refined composite multiscale entropy technique. Nanoindentation testing and X-ray diffraction characterization were performed to assess the changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties of the BMG that occurred during annealing. The results indicated that the BMG did not crystallize during annealing in the prescribed heating condition. Nanoindentation tests revealed that annealing led to a significant increase in the depth-dependent nanoindentation hardness and Young&rsquo, s modulus, which were attributed to the structural relaxation in the glass. Furthermore, both annealing and an increased strain rate resulted in a marked enhancement in the complexity of the serrated flow during compression. It was concluded that the increase in the sample entropy with increasing strain rate is related to an increase in the number of defect interactions during the serrated flow.

The newly invented triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) shows a significant potential to be a powerful technology for converting mechanical energy into electricity as a complementary usage for solving our future energy demanded for micro- and macro- grid. However, packaging and robustness are critical factors for TENG toward practical applications since the performance of TENG is affected by environmental conditions such as humidity. Here, a full-packaged waterwheel-like rolling triboelectric–electromagnetic hybrid nanogenerator (TEHNG) for harvesting mechanical energy in harsh environment has designed. The integrated silicone rubber-magnet rods and electrodes laminated by a layer of nylon film, which worked as the triboelectric material, are used to fabricate a rolling friction free-standing triboelectric layer mode triboelectric nanogenerator (RFS-TENG) and combining with copper coils subtly, electromagnetic generator (EMG) is achieved. The rolling friction causes almost no damage to the triboelectric layers and there is no obvious normalized current decay found after 3-days continuous working at 0.5 Hz. Thus, this novel design makes the TEHNG easier to be packaged, and prevent from water interference revealing a superior robustness. It is also found that the developed TEHNG broadens the working frequency range as TENG can work more effectively for converting the mechanical energy at lower-frequencies less than 5 Hz energy scavenging while EMG can work much better at higher-frequencies above 5 Hz. Moreover, combining with hand shaking and water wheel, the device can be demonstrated to collect the energy of handy and water-flow flexibly. Furthermore, using current output signals of the EMG, a self-powered wireless frequency and revolution sensor systems are also demonstrated. This work presents a new platform of hybrid generator for harvesting mechanical energy in harsh environments with several desirable features such as the broadened frequency bands, better portability and for building up self-powered wireless sensor systems.

We present the first calculation of piezoelectric constants of 3R-MoS2 which is one of three known polytypes of MoS2. We demonstrate that the 3R-MoS2 structure with 5 layers has the highest reported piezoelectric constant of all MoS2 multilayer structures. The maximum piezoelectric constant is approximately 13% above the monolayer value. Also 3R-MoS2 structures with 4 and 6 layers have a larger piezoelectric coefficient compared to monolayer MoS2. Results are obtained using the molecular dynamics computational package LAMMPS subject to room temperature simulations. Our results indicate strong potential for multilayer 3R-MoS2 structures in nanosensor and nanogenerator applications.

The simultaneous monitoring of multi-physical signals is essential for future sensor systems, but is currently only realized by integrating a variety of sensor types into a single device. However, the ability to use a single sensor structure that shares common electrodes can provide a route to multi-functional sensing while also decreasing device size and increasing spatial resolution. Here we report a ferroelectric barium titanate film-based multi-effect coupled nanogenerator for scavenging light, mechanical, and thermal energies to realize a self-powered multi-functional coupled sensor system without using any external power source. The coupled nanogenerator exhibits a strong coupling enhancement with detection sensitivities of 0.42 nA/(mW/cm2) during illumination by 405 nm light, 1.43 nA/kPa for pressure detection, and −8.85 nA/K for temperature sensing, where both the light and pressure sensing performances have the highest sensitivities during a cooling temperature variation of ~19.5 K and the largest temperature detection sensitivity can be achieved during strong light illumination of 83.2 mW/cm2. Moreover, the coupled nanogenerator array can be integrated into flexible forms for tactile pressure, temperature, and light sensors, and enabling coupled sensing for the development of electronic skins.

Implantable energy harvesters (IEHs) are the crucial component for self-powered devices. By harvesting energy from organisms such as heartbeat, respiration, and chemical energy from the redox reaction of glucose, IEHs are utilized as the power source of implantable medical electronics. In this review, we summarize the IEHs and self-powered implantable medical electronics (SIMEs). The typical IEHs are nanogenerators, biofuel cells, electromagnetic generators, and transcutaneous energy harvesting devices that are based on ultrasonic or optical energy. A benefit from these technologies of energy harvesting in vivo, SIMEs emerged, including cardiac pacemakers, nerve/muscle stimulators, and physiological sensors. We provide perspectives on the challenges and potential solutions associated with IEHs and SIMEs. Beyond the energy issue, we highlight the implanted devices that show the therapeutic function in vivo.

The integration between energy-harvesting and energy-storage devices into a self-charging power unit is an effective approach to address the energy bottleneck of wearable/portable/wireless smart devices. Herein, we demonstrate a stretchable coplanar self-charging power textile (SCPT) with triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) and microsupercapacitors (MSCs) both fabricated through a resist-dyeing-analogous method. The textile electrodes maintain excellent conductivity at 600% and 200% tensile strain along course and wale directions, respectively. The fabric in-plane MSC with reduced graphene oxides as active materials reaches a maximum areal capacitance of 50.6 mF cm-2 at 0.01 V s-1 and shows no significant degradation at 50% of tensile strain. The stretchable fabric-based TENG can output 49 V open-circuit voltage and 94.5 mW m-2 peak power density. Finally, a stretchable coplanar SCPT with one-batch resist-dyeing fabrication is demonstrated for powering small electronics intermittently without extra recharging. Our approach is also compatible with conventional textile processing and suggests great potential in electronic textiles and wearable electronics.

Sensor networks are essential for the development of the Internet of Things and the smart city. A general sensor, especially a mobile sensor, has to be driven by a power unit. When considering the high mobility, wide distribution and wireless operation of the sensors, their sustainable operation remains a critical challenge owing to the limited lifetime of an energy storage unit. In 2006, Wang proposed the concept of self-powered sensors/system, which harvests ambient energy to continuously drive a sensor without the use of an external power source. Based on the piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG) and triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), extensive studies have focused on self-powered sensors. TENG and PENG, as effective mechanical-to-electricity energy conversion technologies, have been used not only as power sources but also as active sensing devices in many application fields, including physical sensors, wearable devices, biomedical and health care, human–machine interface, chemical and environmental monitoring, smart traffic, smart cities, robotics, and fiber and fabric sensors. In this review, we systematically summarize the progress made by TENG and PENG in those application fields. A perspective will be given about the future of self-powered sensors.

Due to the natural characteristics of high voltage output, Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have huge advantages in many fields. Here, we have proposed a concept of Mobile ultraviolet light sources (Mobile-UV) driven by TENG, without any additional circuits. For this system, analysis of electric characteristics, optical emission spectra, and COMSOL simulation were carried out to promote the performance. Subsequently, we have developed exploratory applications in the fields of bio-sterilization, chemical detection, and UV-curing, which proved the versatility and effectiveness. This work offers a promising, portable, effective, and safe supplement to traditional ultraviolet light sources, and will enrich the diversity of the ultraviolet application based on the reach of existing technologies., Graphical abstract Image 1, Highlights • A distributed mobile ultraviolet light sources (Mobile-UV) system driven by ambient mechanical stimuli, which only consists of a freestanding-rotating triboelectric nanogenerator (FR-TENG) and Ar–Hg lamps without any external boost circuit. • Analysis and simulations about glow discharge of Mobile-UV based on COMSOL had been done to further study the properties of whole discharge process. • The versatility and practicability of the system were verified by the preliminary application in the fields of bio-sterilization, chemical detection, and UV-curing. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been widely applied for energy harvesting and self-powered sensing, whereas smart deformable materials can be combined with the TENG to acquire a more intelligent and self-adaptive system. Here, based on the vapor-driven actuation material of a perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer (PFSA), we propose a type of humidity-responsive TENG. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been investigated for mechanical energy harvesting because of their high-energy conversion efficiency, low cost, ease of manufacturing, and so on. This paper deals with designing a kind of water-fluid-driven rotating TENG (WR-TENG) inspired by the structure of a water meter. The designed WR-TENG is effectively integrated into a self-powered electrostatic scale-preventing and rust protection system. The WR-TENG can generate a constant DC voltage up to about 7.6 kV by using a voltage-doubling rectifier circuit (VDRC) to establish a high-voltage electrostatic field in the water tank. A WR-TENG, a VDRC, and an electric water heating tank are the components of the whole system. The system is convenient to be installed in any waterway system, effectively preventing the rusting of stainless steel and restraining the formation of scale when the water is heated to 65 ± 5 °C. Moreover, the approximately linear relationship between the short-circuit current and the rotation rate of the WR-TENG makes employing it as a self-powered water flow sensor possible. This work enables a facile, safe, and effective approach for electrostatic scale prevention, rust protection, and flow sensing in solar heaters, which will enrich the high-voltage applications of TENGs.

Vacuum smelting experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of different initial nitrogen content and surface active elements on nitrogen denitrification and nitrogen absorption in molten steel. Thermodynamic calculations show that the pressure corresponding to 10 ppm of [N] should be less than 45 Pa; at 30 Pa and 1600°C, the nitrogen content in the steel reduced from 18 to 10 ppm in 50 min. Furthermore, denitrification can be described as a 1.5th order reaction model. In addition, the mean parameters of nitrogen absorption between the ultra-low and common-nitrogen steels are different: for ultra-low nitrogen molten steel exposed to air, even if [S] ≥ 200 ppm and [O] ≥ 300 ppm, [N] can increase from 10 to over 40 ppm in 20 min.

The progress of electronic textiles relies on the development of sustainable power sources without much sacrifice of convenience and comfort of fabrics. Herein, we present a rechargeable textile alkaline Zn microbattery (micro-AZB) fabricated by a process analogous to traditional resist-dyeing techniques. Conductive patterned electrodes are realized first by resist-aided electroless/electrodeposition of Ni/Cu films. The resulting coplanar micro-AZB in a single textile, with an electroplated Zn anode and a Ni0.7Co0.3OOH cathode, achieves high energy density (256.2 Wh kg-1), high power density (10.3 kW kg-1), and stable cycling performances (82.7% for 1500 cycles). The solid-state micro-AZB also shows excellent mechanical reliability (bending, twisting, tailoring, etc.). The improved reversibility and cyclability of textile Zn electrodes over conventional Zn foils are found to be due to the significantly inhibited Zn dendrite growth and suppressed undesirable side reactions. This work provides a new approach for energy-storage textile with high rechargeability, high safety, and aesthetic design versatility.
