Sweet cherry is prone to senesce and decay due to high postharvest respiration rate and fungal infection. The effects of natamycin-chitosan coating on physicochemical and microbial properties of sweet cherries stored at 4 °C were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy results revealed that natamycin was more uniformly distributed on sweet cherry pericarps with the help of chitosan coating. Respiration rate of sweet cherries was suppressed by chitosan coating during the storage and as a result, total soluble solids (13.53 %-13.80 %) and titratable acidity (0.91 %-0.93 %) were remained higher values and weight loss (2.54 %-2.85 %) was decreased in chitosan and natamycin-chitosan groups. Although both natamycin and chitosan were effective in inhibiting yeast and mold, sweet cherries treated with the combination of natamycin and chitosan showed significantly lower yeast and mold count (3.31 log CFU/g) and decay rate (1.67 %) compared with control. Natamycin combined chitosan inhibited the pathogenic fungi of sweet cherries, such as Alternaria, Cladosporium and Penicillium. These results indicated that postharvest natamycin-chitosan coating has great advantages in maintaining fruit quality, inhibiting fungi, and reducing decay rate of sweet cherry., (Copyright © 2022. Purpose: Pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma (PCC/PGL; collectively known as PPGL) can be driven by germline and somatic mutations in susceptibility genes. We aimed to investigate the mutation profile and clinical features of pathogenic genes in highly genetically heterogeneous PPGL and to preliminary explore molecular therapeutic targets in PPGL., Methods: We established a panel of 260 genes, including susceptibility genes of PPGL and other important tumorigenic genes to sequence 107 PPGL tissues., Results: Overall, 608 genomic mutations were identified in 107 PPGL tissues. Almost 57% of PPGL tissue samples exhibited pathogenic mutations, and the most frequently mutated gene was SDHB (15/107, 14%). SDHB and HRAS were the most commonly mutated genes in germline-mutated PPGL (25/107, 23%) and nongermline-mutated PPGL (36/107, 34%), respectively. In addition, novel pathogenic mutations were detected in sporadic PPGL. PPGL with mutations in the hypoxia pathway had an earlier onset and higher norepinephrine level than those in the kinase pathway. Receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK; 22%, 24/107), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK; 14%, 15/107), and tyrosine kinase (TK; 2%, 2/107) pathways were the most frequently mutated pathways in PPGL., Conclusion: Our results provided the genetic mutation profile in PPGL tissues. Poly(glycolic acid) (PGA) is a semicrystalline biodegradable polyester with high gas barrier properties. However, due to its poor processability and low ductility, PGA could hardly find applications in the packaging field. Here, a strategy was adopted for in situ generation of high-aspect-ratio flexible microfibrils with strong interface affinity for the PGA matrix. Because poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) possesses impressive ductility, it was selected as the "fibrillar toughening phase" to enhance the ductility of PGA. Moreover, a chain extender was used to enhance the interfacial adhesion between the two polymers. The extrusion blown film technique was then used to develop fully biodegradable PGA/PBAT films with a superior combination of excellent barrier performance and robust mechanical properties. The PBAT phase can in situ form microfibrils under the influence of extensional flow. Simultaneously, the synergetic function of the extensional flow field could effectively promote the motion of the PGA molecular chain to develop an oriented crystalline microstructure. Because of the aligned oriented lamellar crystal of PGA and oriented PBAT fibril structures serving as robust "barrier walls" 60PGA/ADR blown films demonstrated dramatically improved resistance to oxygen and water vapor, with 59 and 44 times lower oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability, respectively, when compared to the neat PBAT blown film. As a result, PGA/PBAT blown films offer a variety of benefits, including superior ductility, toughness, and a strong gas barrier property. Background: Patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been observed to benefit from tiotropium bromide. However, there are few studies of tiotropium bromide on sputum and sputum viscosity. To evaluate the effect of tiotropium bromide on mucus hypersecretion, a randomized, double-blind controlled trial was performed., Methods: 120 cases of patients with pulmonary function grade II were divided into two groups, which include the treatment group given tiotropium bromide powder inhalation (18  μ g, inhalation, QD) and the control group given formoterol fumarate powder inhalation (12  μ g, inhalation, BID) plus ambroxol hydrochloride tablets (60 mg, oral, TID). After 3 months of treatment, the pulmonary function and α 1 -acid glycoprotein ( α 1 -AGP) in sputum were detected, and the changes of glycoprotein and Ca 2+ content were evaluated by Miller classification., Results: Three patients (2 cases in the treatment group and 1 case in the control group) were dropped due to loss of follow-up, and 117 cases of patients were enrolled in this study. After 3 months of treatment, the sputum character score, α 1-acid glycoprotein, Ca 2+ content, and lung function of the two groups were significantly improved; group comparison analyses revealed that there was no significant difference in the content of α 1 -AGP, Ca 2+ in sputum, and lung function between the two groups ( P > 0.05), but the improvement of sputum properties was significant ( P < 0.05), and the treatment group was better than the control group ( t = -2.77; P = 0.007)., Conclusions: Inhaled tiotropium bromide can effectively inhibit the mucus hypersecretion in stable COPD patients, improve the sputum properties and lung function of patients, and improve the quality of life of patients., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no competing interests., (Copyright © 2021 Suyun Yu et al.)

COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented global public health crisis. It is obvious that SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is needed to control the global COVID-19 public health crisis. Since obvious advantages including fast manufacturing speed, potent immunogenicity and good safety profile, six mRNA vaccines have been used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infections in clinic with lipid nanoparticles (LNP) formulation via intramuscular injection. In this work, we first constructed RBD-encoding mRNA (RBD-mRNA) formulated in liposomes (LPX/RBD-mRNA) and investigated the influence of administration routes on the immunogenicity. LPX/RBD-mRNA can express RBD in vivo and successfully induced SARS-CoV-2 RBD specific antibodies in the vaccinated mice, which efficiently neutralized SARS-CoV-2 pseudotyped virus. Moreover, the administration routes were found to affect the virus neutralizing capacity of sera derived from the immunized mice and the types (Th1-type and Th2-type) of cellular immune responses. This study indicated that liposome-based RBD-mRNA vaccine with optimal administration route might be a potential candidate against SARS-CoV-2 infection with good efficacy and safety., (Copyright © 2021. Objective: To explore the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided percutaneous Herbert screw for the treatment of fresh nondisplaced carpal scaphoid fracture., Methods: Between May 2013 and August 2015, 15 patients with fresh nondisplaced carpal scaphoid fractures (Krimmer type A2) were treated with ultrasound-guided Herbert screw fixation. There were 12 males and 3 females with an average age of 33.4 years (range, 18-51 years). The causes of injury included 9 cases of falls, 3 cases of training injuries, and 3 cases of machine injuries. The interval from injury to surgery was 2-15 days (mean, 5 days). No other complication was found. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, intraoperative fluoroscopy times, and the fracture healing time were recorded. The wrist function was assessed by the modified Mayo wrist score standard., Results: The operation time was 28-53 minutes (mean, 33.9 minutes); the intraoperative blood loss was 5-30 mL (mean, 10.5 mL); the intraoperative fluoroscopy was 2-6 times (mean, 2.6 times). All 15 patients were followed up 6-18 months (mean, 10.5 months). One patient developed pain and soreness in the skin of the nail entrance, and gradually relieved after fumigation. No complication such as infection occurred. All fractures healed clinically, and the healing time was 8-16 weeks (mean, 11.6 weeks). At last follow-up, the modified Mayo wrist score was 76-99 (mean, 92.5). Among them, 12 cases were excellent, 2 cases were good, and 1 case was fair, and the excellent and good rate was 93.3%., Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided fixation with Herbert screw is a reliable treatment method for fresh nondisplaced carpal scaphoid fractures with small invasion, less bleeding, and small radiation damage.

Shewanella baltica and Acinetobacter are among the predominant spoilage bacteria in refrigerated shrimp ( Litopenaeus vannamei ). S. baltica are incapable of producing acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL) quorum sensing signals, but can respond to environmental AHLs. In this paper, Acinetobacter was found to produce three AHLs, i.e. N -butanoyl-l-homoserine lactone (C4-HSL), N -(3-oxohexanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (O-C6-HSL) and N -(3-oxooctanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone (O-C8-HSL), according to thin-layer chromatography using the bioreporter Agrobacterium tumefaciens A136. The agar diffusion and β-galactosidase assays revealed that S. baltica could eavesdrop on these three AHLs from Acinetobacter . Eavesdropping on Acinetobacter AHLs especially C4-HSL was found to boost the growth of S. baltica particularly under nutrient limiting conditions (up to 40-fold increase) in the co-culture experiments. The azocasein assay revealed that S. baltica produced fourfold more extracellular proteases in response to Acinetobacter AHLs. As demonstrated by the biofilm crystal violet staining assay and confocal laser scanning microscopy, eavesdropping also decreased the biofilm-forming capacity of Acinetobacter . By inoculation of S. baltica and Acinetobacter onto surface-sterilized shrimp, eavesdropping was found to endow a growth advantage to S. baltica in vivo, resulting in a 0.5 day shortened shelf life of shrimp according to total volatile basic nitrogen levels and sensory analysis. Overall, the AHL-dependent eavesdropping increased the spoilage potential of S. baltica , providing a fresh perspective on the spoilage process of refrigerated L. vannamei , and this may inspire the development of novel preservation techniques in the future to further reduce post-harvest loss of shrimp., Competing Interests: Compliance with ethical standardsThe authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.

Objective: To observe the early reperfusion therapy status for patients with ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) hospitalized in tertiary and secondary hospitals in Henan province., Methods: Baseline data, early reperfusion treatment and in-hospital mortality of STEMI patients hospitalized in 17 hospitals in Henan province (8 tertiary hospitals, 9 secondary hospitals) from June 2011 to June 2012 were obtained using a uniformed questionnaire., Results: One thousand six hundred and eighty six patients were enrolled, of which 886 patients were hospitalized in tertiary hospitals and 880 patients were early hospitalized in secondary hospitals. Six hundred and fifty four patients (38.8%, 654/1 686) underwent early reperfusion therapy (543 with thrombolysis and 111 with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)). There was no difference in the proportion of early reperfusion therapy between tertiary and secondary hospitals (40.1% (355/886) vs. 37.4% (299/800), P = 0.257). The median time from symptom onset to first medical contact, door-to-needle and door-to-balloon was 132 min, 18 min and 60 min, respectively. The median time from symptom onset to first medical contact (150 min vs. 120 min, P = 0.001), door-to-needle (30 min vs. 18 min, P = 0.003) and symptom onset-to-thrombolysis (3.5 h vs. 2.7 h, P = 0.001) were significantly longer in tertiary hospitals than in secondary hospitals. No difference was found in median time of door-to-balloon, symptom onset-to-primary PCI or symptom onset-to-elected PCI between tertiary and secondary hospitals (all P > 0.05). The proportion of door-to-needle ≤ 30 min was lower in tertiary hospitals than in secondary hospitals (46.4% (84/181) vs. 62.2% (153/246), P = 0.001). However, there was no difference in the proportion of door-to-balloon ≤ 90 min between tertiary and secondary hospitals (58.8% (60/102) vs. 57.1% (4/7), P = 1.000). In-hospital mortality was also similar between tertiary and secondary hospitals (5.8% (51/886) vs. 5.5% (44/800), P = 0.820)., Conclusions: Early reperfusion rate is low, and thrombolysis is the main early reperfusion therapy in both tertiary and secondary hospitals in Henan province. Tertiary hospitals did not take advantage of their primary PCI capability. There is great room for improvement in early reperfusion therapy in tertiary and secondary hospitals.

Using density-functional calculations, we studied the interaction between interstitial impurities (N, C) and γ-Fe(111) surfaces doped, or not, with Cr, as well as the effect of Cr doping on the dissolution corrosion resistance of the γ-Fe(111) surface. The elementary processes studied afforded microscopic insights into the formation of a Cr-depleted zone, a phenomenon that leads to local corrosion of the stainless steel surface. The aim of this work was to study, at the atomic scale, the effects of N and C on the segregation behavior of Cr and the synergetic effect between co-doped atoms on the resistance to dissolution corrosion of austenitic stainless steel surfaces. The results showed that interstitial impurities prefer to be trapped at near-surface sites, which can impact the segregation behavior of Cr such that it shifts from the surface to the subsurface. Electrode potential calculations and density of states analysis demonstrated that doping with Cr or inserting interstitial impurities into the solid solution can improve the surface corrosion resistance of an fcc Fe substrate, but detrimental effects on the surface corrosion resistance are induced by interactions between Cr and interstitial impurity atoms in co-doped surfaces. The formation of near-surface Cr carbides and nitrides (speculated to be Cr2N and Cr23C6 due to the results obtained for particular co-doped surfaces) was also noted. The results of our theoretical calculations explain some of the experimental results observed at the atomic scale.

Effects of alloying elements in popular steels on the oxidation and dissolution corrosion of the surface of γ-Fe(111) have been investigated by performing density functional theory calculations within the local density approximation. First, the segregation of alloying atoms as well as preferential adsorption sites for oxygen and water were carefully examined, and it was found that all of the alloying elements considered had a tendency to segregate to the surface, and that the most preferred adsorption sites were the hexagonal closed packed (hcp) site and the top site for oxygen and water, respectively. The adsorption energies that characterized the tendency for oxygen or water to be adsorbed on the alloy surface showed that all ten alloying elements (especially Cr, Si, and Cu) were able to inhibit the adsorption of oxygen, and that all of the alloying elements except for Nb, Mo, and Ti inhibited water adsorption. The electrode potentials, which indicate the electrochemical stabilities of the surfaces of the alloys, suggested that all of these alloying elements (especially Cr, Mo, and Si) were able to suppress the adsorption of oxygen and water on the investigated surfaces, except for Nb and Ti in the case of water adsorption. Density of states analysis further indicated that all ten alloying elements (especially Cr, Si, Mo, and Cu) enhanced the corrosion resistance of the fcc Fe substrate, except for Nb and Ti with respect to dissolution corrosion.

To observe the effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) on testis spermatogenic injuries induced by Bisphenol A (BPA) in mice. BPA was subcutaneously injected into mice at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight (BW) for 7 consecutive days. LBP was administered simultaneously with BPA by gavage daily at the dose of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg BW for 7 days. After treatment, the weight and the histopathology changes of testis and epididymis were examined; the contents of T, LH, GnRH, antioxidant enzyme, and malondialdehyde (MDA) in serum were detected; proapoptotic protein Bax and antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 were also detected by immunohistochemical method. Results showed that the weights of testis and epididymis were all increased after supplement with different dosages of LBP compared with BPA group, and the activities of SOD and GSH-Px were significantly increased in LBP groups, while MDA contents were gradually decreased. Moreover, the levels of T, LH, and GnRH were significantly elevated in serum treated with 100 mg/kg LBP. LBP also shows significant positive effects on the expression of Bcl-2/Bax in BPA treated mice. It is concluded that LBP may be one of the potential ingredients protecting the adult male animals from BPA induced reproductive damage.
