SCALING laws (Nuclear physics) ,FERROELECTRICITY ,HYSTERESIS ,CERAMICS ,ELECTRIC fields - Abstract
The scaling behaviors of dynamic ferroelectric hysteresis in the relaxor ferroelectric 0.67Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.33PbTiO3 (PMNT67/33) ceramics near the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and other PMNT systems out of MPB region were investigated. The scaling relation of hysteresis area against frequency f and field amplitude E0 for minor loops takes the form of ∝f-0.2391E04.8779; while for the saturated loops, it is ∝f 0.0401E00.5722. The scaling relations of PMNT67/33 ceramics are significantly different from those of other ferroelectrics, and the results of the analysis indicate that domain reversal in it is much more sensitive to the change of E0 at low electric field and responses more quickly to f at high electric field than other normal ferroelectrics. The coexistence of rhombohedral (R), monoclinic (M) and tetragonal (T) phases near the MPB and the polar nanoregions seems to play the key role in the dynamic behavior of the domain reversal in relaxor PMNT67/33 ceramics. Three types of dissociated misfit dislocations (MDs) in epitaxial Ba
0.3 Sr0.7 TiO3 thin films grown on (001) LaAlO3 have been studied by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. First, a MD with b=[101] dissociates into two edge partials and results in the incline of film lattice. Second, a [110] MD is split into two (1/2)[110] partials of mixed character. In the third case, a [110] MD of mixed character is composed of three partials which are reacted with two (1/2)<110> stacking faults. Neither of the three types of dissociation reactions has been reported before for MDs in perovskite thin films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

We have studied the thermoelectric properties of quantum dot (QD) chain nanocomposites in which the QDs are aligned to form chains. In both the InAs/GaAs and Ge/Si systems, we use a constant relaxation time approximation to calculate and compare the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermoelectric power factor for QD chains, three-dimensional ordered QD arrays, random QD arrays, and bulk GaAs or Si. Our calculations suggest that the incorporation of QD chains into a matrix increases its thermoelectric power factor by a factor of 3 (1.5) for the InAs/GaAs (Ge/Si) system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the mechanisms of GaAs
1-x Nx film growth by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. A comparison of in situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), with ex situ atomic force microscopy, reveals a temperature-dependent interplay between surface and step-edge diffusion. At low temperatures, layer-by-layer growth is observed, presumably due to limited adatom surface mobility. As the temperature increases, the interplay between surface and step-edge diffusion leads to multilayer growth. For sufficiently high temperatures, adatoms overcome the step-edge diffusion barrier, resulting in layer-by-layer growth once again. The temperature range for multilayer growth is influenced by the Ga flux and may be narrowed by using As2 . Using in situ STM, we quantified the activation energies for Ga surface diffusion, Ed , and step-edge diffusion, Ee , during layer-by-layer GaAsN growth. We estimate Ed =0.75 and 0.96 eV for growth using As4 and As2 , respectively. Thus, the narrowing of the multilayer growth temperature range is likely due to the decrease in Ga surface diffusion length through the use of As2 in lieu of As4 . Furthermore, we estimate Ee =80 meV, larger than what has been reported for GaAs growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
We have investigated stress evolution in dilute nitride GaAs
1-x Nx alloy films grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy. For coherently strained films (x<2.5%), a comparison of stresses measured via in situ wafer curvature measurements, with those determined from x-ray rocking curves using a linear interpolation of lattice parameter and elastic constants, suggests significant bowing of the elastic properties of GaAsN. The observed stress differences are used to quantify the composition-dependent elastic constant bowing parameters. For films with x>2.5%, in situ wafer curvature measurements reveal a signature for stress relaxation. Atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy measurements indicate that stress relaxation occurs by a combination of elastic relaxation via island formation and plastic relaxation associated with the formation of stacking faults. We have examined the matrix-seeded growth of narrow-gap nitride nanostructures in nitrogen ion implanted GaAs and InAs. Low-energy implantation followed by rapid thermal annealing (RTA) results in the formation of 2–3 nm sized amorphous precipitates in a crystalline matrix. On the other hand, high-energy implantation results in an amorphous layer, with or without crystalline remnants. When the ion-beam-synthesized amorphous matrix is a continuous amorphous layer, subsequent RTA leads to the formation of 4–5 nm zinc blende (ZB)-GaN-rich crystallites in an amorphous matrix. When this matrix contains crystalline remnants, subsequent RTA leads to the formation of 2–4 nm ZB-GaN-rich crystallites within the amorphous regions. These results suggest that the matrix plays an important role in the nucleation and growth of narrow-gap nitride nanostructures, and that matrix-seeded growth may provide an opportunity to control the structure and properties of the nanostructures. ION bombardment ,ALLOYS ,NANOSTRUCTURES - Abstract
We have investigated the evolution of structural and optical properties of GaAsN nanostructures synthesized by N ion implantation into epitaxial GaAs, followed by rapid thermal annealing. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction indicate the formation of nanometer-sized crystallites with lattice parameters close to those of pure zincblende GaN. The average crystallite size increases with annealing temperature while the size distribution is self-similar and the volume fraction remains constant, suggesting a coarsening process governed by Ostwald ripening. These GaAsN nanostructures exhibit significant photoluminescence in the near infrared range. The apparent lowering of the fundamental band gap is likely due to the incorporation of a small amount of As in GaN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
We present a measurement of top quark polarization in t (t) over bar pair production in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using data corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider final states containing a lepton and at least three jets. The polarization is measured through the distribution of lepton angles along three axes: the beam axis, the helicity axis, and the transverse axis normal to the t (t) over bar production plane. This is the first measurement of top quark polarization at the Tevatron using lepton + jet final states and the first measurement of the transverse polarization in t (t) over bar production. The observed distributions are consistent with standard model predictions of nearly no polarization.

- Abstract
We present the first measurement of the CP violating charge asymmetry in B-+/- -> mu(+/-)nu D-mu(0) decays using the full Run II integrated luminosity of 10.4 fb(-1) in proton-antiproton collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure a difference in the yield of B- and B+ mesons in these decays by fitting the reconstructed invariant mass distributions. This results in an asymmetry of A(mu D0) = [-0.14 +/- 0.20] %, which is consistent with standard model predictions.

- Abstract
We present a combination of measurements of the top quark mass by the D0 experiment in the lepton + jets and dilepton channels. We use all the data collected in Run I (1992-1996) at root s = 1.8 TeV and Run II (2001-2011) at root s = 1.96 TeV of the Tevatron p (p) over bar collider, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 0.1 fb(-1) and 9.7 fb(-1), respectively. The combined result is: m(t) = 174.95 +/- 0.40(stat)+/- 0.64(syst) GeV = 174.95 +/- 0.75 GeV.

- Abstract
LESSONS LEARNED: These negative phase II results for parsatuzumab highlight the challenges of developing an agent intended to enhance the efficacy of vascular endothelial growth factor inhibition without the benefit of validated pharmacodynamic biomarkers or strong predictive biomarker hypotheses.Any further clinical development of anti-EGFL7 is likely to require new mechanistic insights and biomarker development for antiangiogenic agents. BACKGROUND: EGFL7 (epidermal growth factor-like domain 7) is a tumor-enriched vascular extracellular matrix protein that supports endothelial cell survival. This phase II trial evaluated the efficacy of parsatuzumab (also known as MEGF0444A), a humanized anti-EGFL7 IgG1 monoclonal antibody, in combination with modified FOLFOX6 (mFOLFOX6) (folinic acid, 5-fluorouracil, and oxaliplatin) bevacizumab in patients with previously untreated metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). METHODS: One-hundred twenty-seven patients were randomly assigned to parsatuzumab, 400 mg, or placebo, in combination with mFOLFOX6 plus bevacizumab, 5 mg/kg. Treatment cycles were repeated every 2 weeks until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity for a maximum of 24 months, with the exception of oxaliplatin, which was administered for up to 8 cycles. RESULTS: The progression-free survival (PFS) hazard ratio was 1.17 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.71-1.93; p = .548). The median PFS was 12 months for the experimental arm versus 11.9 months for the control arm. The hazard ratio for overall survival was 0.97 (95% CI, 0.46-2.1; p = .943). The overall response rate was 59% in the parsatuzumab arm and 64% in the placebo arm. The adverse event profile was similar in both arms. CONCLUSIONS: There was no evidence of efficacy for the addition of parsatuzumab to the combination of bevacizumab and chemotherapy for first-line mCRC. The Oncologist 2017;22:375-e30.

- Abstract
Interfacial carrier recombination is one of the dominant loss mechanisms in high efficiency perovskite solar cells, and has also been linked to hysteresis and slow transient responses in these cells. Here we demonstrate an ultrathin passivation layer consisting of a PMMA:PCBM mixture that can effectively passivate defects at or near to the perovskite/TiO2 interface, significantly suppressing interfacial recombination. The passivation layer increases the open circuit voltage of mixed-cation perovskite cells by as much as 80 mV, with champion cells achieving Voc ∼ 1.18 V. As a result, we obtain efficient and stable perovskite solar cells with a steady-state PCE of 20.4% and negligible hysteresis over a large range of scan rates. In addition, we show that the passivated cells exhibit very fast current and voltage response times of less than 3 s under cyclic illumination. This new passivation approach addresses one of the key limitations of current perovskite cells, and paves the way to further efficiency gains through interface engineering.

- Abstract
Background and purpose: There is a clinical impression that patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) have a higher level of physical fitness and lower body mass index (BMI) than average. However, there is a lack of literature examining the relationship between cognitive fitness and ALS risk. In this study we explored the associations of both physical and cognitive fitness with future risk of ALS. Methods: Data on physical fitness, BMI, intelligence quotient (IQ) and stress resilience were collected from 1 838 376 Swedish men aged 17-20 years at conscription during 1968-2010. Their subsequent ALS diagnoses were identified through the Swedish Patient Register. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs from flexible parametric models were used to assess age-specific associations of physical fitness, BMI, IQ and stress resilience with ALS. Results: We identified 439 incident ALS cases during follow-up (mean age at diagnosis: 48 years). Individuals with physical fitness above the highest tertile tended to have a higher risk of ALS before the age of 45 years (range of HRs: 1.42-1.75; statistically significant associations at age 41-43 years) compared with others. Individuals with BMI ≥ 25 tended to have a lower risk of ALS at all ages (range of HRs: 0.42-0.80; statistically significant associations at age 42-48 years) compared with those with BMI < 25. Individuals with IQ above the highest tertile had a statistically significantly increased risk of ALS at an age of 56 years and above (range of HRs: 1.33-1.81), whereas individuals with stress resilience above the highest tertile had a lower risk of ALS at an age of 55 years and below (range of HRs: 0.47-0.73). Conclusions: Physical fitness, BMI, IQ and stress resilience in young adulthood might be associated with the development of ALS at an early age., Funding Agencies:Swedish Initiative for Research on Microdata in the Social and Medical Sciences 340-2013-5867Swedish Society of Medical ResearchKarolinska InstitutetEU

- Abstract
Aims: Although smoking is considered to be an established risk factor for colorectal cancer, the current evidence on the association between smokeless tobacco and colorectal cancer is scant and inconclusive. We used pooled individual data from the Swedish Collaboration on Health Effects of Snus Use to assess this association. Methods: A total of 417,872 male participants from nine cohort studies across Sweden were followed up for incidence of colorectal cancer and death. Outcomes were ascertained through linkage to health registers. We used shared frailty models with random effects at the study level to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: During 7,135,504 person-years of observation, 4170 men developed colorectal cancer. There was no clear association between snus use and colorectal cancer overall. Exclusive current snus users, however, had an increased risk of rectal cancer (HR 1.40: 95% CI 1.09, 1.79). There were no statistically significant associations between snus use and either all-cause or colorectal cancer-specific mortality after colorectal cancer diagnosis. Conclusions: Our findings, from a large sample, do not support any strong relationships between snus use and colorectal cancer risk and survival among men. However, the observed increased risk of rectal cancer is noteworthy, and in merit of further attention

- Abstract
Objective Both observational studies and randomized trials have shown that a diet rich in antioxidants can reduce systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, two conditions that, together with obesity and smoking, are established risk factors for stroke. However, the association between antioxidant intake and risk for stroke is poorly understood, particularly when studying possible interaction with sex. We investigated the relationship of nonenzymatic antioxidant capacity (NEAC) on risk for stroke in a large Swedish prospective cohort. Methods The cohort study included 34 555 men and women from the Swedish National March Cohort. NEAC was assessed using a detailed food frequency questionnaire, collected at baseline. We achieved complete follow-up from enrollment in 1997 through 2010 by record linkage to nationwide registers. We identified 1186 incident cases of a first stroke, of which 860 were ischemic, 201 hemorrhagic, and 125 unspecified. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Compared with women in the lowest quartile of NEAC, women in the highest quartile had a 27% lower incidence of total stroke (HR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.53–0.99; Ptrend = 0.03) and 35% lower incidence of ischemic stroke (HR, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.43–0.99; Ptrend = 0.01). Among men, the relationship between NEAC and risk for stroke was not statistically significant and all HRs were close to unity. Conclusion Findings from the present study suggest that dietary antioxidant capacity from different foods and beverages is inversely associated with risk for stroke, more specifically ischemic stroke, in women.

- Abstract
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may be associated with low body mass index (BMI) at the time of diagnosis. However, the role of premorbid BMI in the development of ALS and survival after diagnosis remains unclear. In 2005-2010, we interviewed 467 patients with ALS from the US National Registry of Veterans with ALS and 975 frequency-matched veteran controls. In this sample, we evaluated the association of BMI and BMI change at different ages with ALS risk using unconditional logistic models and with survival after ALS diagnosis using Cox proportional hazards models. After adjustment for confounders, compared with a moderate increase in BMI between ages 25 and 40 years, stable or decreasing BMI was positively associated with ALS risk (odds ratio (OR) = 1.61, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20, 2.16). A 1-unit increase in BMI at age 40 years (OR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.91, 0.98) but not at age 25 years (OR = 0.99, 95% CI: 0.95, 1.03) was inversely associated with ALS. These associations were similar for bulbar and spinal ALS but stronger for those with a delay of less than 1 year between symptom onset and diagnosis. We found no association between prediagnosis BMI and survival. A decreasing BMI from early to middle age and a low BMI in middle age may be positively associated with ALS risk.

- Abstract
Background: Cigarette smoking is associated with a lower risk of Parkinson's disease. It is unclear what constituent of tobacco smoke may lower the risk. Use of Swedish moist smokeless tobacco (snus) can serve as a model to disentangle what constituent of tobacco smoke may lower the risk. The aim of this study was to determine whether snus use was associated with a lower risk of Parkinson's disease. Methods: Individual participant data were collected from seven prospective cohort studies, including 348 601 men. We used survival analysis with multivariable Cox regression to estimate study-specific relative risk of Parkinson's disease due to snus use, and random-effects models to pool estimates in a meta-analysis. The primary analyses were restricted to never-smokers to eliminate the potential confounding effect of tobacco smoking. Results: During a mean follow-up time of 16.1 years, 1199 incident Parkinson's disease cases were identified. Among men who never smoked, ever-snus users had about 60% lower Parkinson's disease risk compared with never-snus users [pooled hazard ratio (HR) 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.28-0.61]. The inverse association between snus use and Parkinson's disease risk was more pronounced in current (pooled HR 0.38, 95% CI 0.23-0.63), moderate-heavy amount (pooled HR 0.41, 95% CI 0.19-0.90) and long-term snus users (pooled HR 0.44, 95% CI 0.24-0.83).Conclusions: Non-smoking men who used snus had a substantially lower risk of Parkinson's disease. Results also indicated an inverse dose-response relationship between snus use and Parkinson's disease risk. Our findings suggest that nicotine or other components of tobacco leaves may influence the development of Parkinson's disease.
