This paper presents a technique for the detection of keratoconus via the construction of a 3D eye images from 2D frontal and lateral eye images. Keratoconus is a disease that affects the cornea. Normal case eyes have a round-shaped cornea, while patients who suffer from keratoconus have a cone-shaped cornea. Early diagnosis can decrease the risk of eyesight loss. Our aim is to create a method of fully automated keratoconus detection using digital-camera frontal and lateral eye images. The presented technique accurately determines case severity. Geometric features are extracted from 2D images to estimate depth information used to build 3D images of the cornea. The proposed methodology is easy to implement and time-efficient. 2D images of the eyes (frontal and lateral) are used as input, and 3D images from which the curvature of the cornea can be detected are produced as output. Our method involves two main steps: feature extraction and depth calculation. Machine learning from the 3D images dataset Dataverse, specifically taken by the Cornea/Anterior Segment OCT SS-1000 (CASIA), was performed. Results show that the method diagnosed the four stages of keratoconus (severe, moderate, mild, and normal) with an accuracy of 97.8%, as compared to manual diagnosis done by medical experts. INTELLIGENT transportation systems , *TRAFFIC safety , *CARBON monoxide , *ENERGY consumption , *TRAFFIC congestion , *CARBON emissions , *EXPRESS highways - Abstract
In addition to their environmental impact, road traffic congestions have been recognized to seriously affect commuters' safety as well as the performance of transportation systems. To address these issues, various Traffic Incident Management (TIM) systems have been implemented. Recent systems are particularly focusing on the integration of promising emergent technologies such as the Internet of Things. However, thorough studies are still necessary to make sure that these technologies are compatible with existing systems and effective within their context of use. The main goal of this research is to develop a smart TIM system which is based on Car2X communications and which aims at improving both traffic safety, commuters' mobility, and gas emissions. To assess the effectiveness of our solution, we use the following measures: stops delay, stops all, vehicle delay, travel time, gas emissions, and fuel consumption. This paper also outlines how we use our simulation platform (which was developed based on VISSIM and Python) to quantify the benefits of using Car2X communications. We run our simulations on Muscat Expressway in the Sultanate of Oman. Results are promising and include (1) the travel time decreased by 6%; (2) the average stop delay and vehicle stops were reduced by at least 9% and 27% respectively; and (3) there is a total decrease in fuel consumption and carbon monoxide emissions by approximately 16%. TIME perception , *LOGNORMAL distribution , *DISTRIBUTION (Probability theory) , *TRAVEL literature , *COST effectiveness - Abstract
Investigating travel time distribution and associated variability is important for a variety of transport planning, traffic management, and control projects. Studies that investigated travel time distribution tend to be limited to explore changes in characteristics of distribution with respect to space and time of day. Given the availability of big dataset that contains seven different types of vehicle trajectories in the city of Athens for around 56,000 trips which are traversing on more than 1.8 million road links, this study presents the detailed investigation of travel time distribution in different spatiotemporal settings. The study considered four different types of urban roads and six time intervals along with consideration of weekdays and weekends. The empirical investigation employed Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-square, and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests to fit travel time data into seven unimodal statistical distributions that are found in the literature to describe travel time distribution. It is found that lognormal distribution outperformed other distribution, and all of the considered categories of travel time data are well-fitted to this distribution. Additionally, parameters of lognormal distribution for different categories of travel time data are not significantly different from each other, which led to the conclusion that travel time distribution is roughly independent of space and time, which is in agreement with a few earlier studies that are limited in their scope especially in relation with availability of data. With this important finding, this study estimate values of travel time variability for different classes of individuals employing a standard approach that requires time of day independent standardized distribution of travel time. It is estimated that for Athens population value of travel time variability is approximately half of the value of travel time. This is useful to carry out cost-benefit analyses for mobility-related projects in Athens, Greece. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Considerable efforts are being spent worldwide to ensure comfortable living environments and decent, on-time assistance to elderly and people requiring healthcare services. Recent advances in data acquisition and communication are allowing revolutionary ambient assisted leaving (AAL) systems to be implemented, where healthcare data are collected and reported on-the-fly to dedicated medical servers for further analysis and actions. Due to the increasing rely on distributed, resource constrained sensing devices, AAL systems are being subject to large number of attacks. In addition to usual high energy consumption and communication overhead, current systems are not yet able to fully safeguard the private data of their users. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose in this paper to combine the use of cryptography, compressed sensing, and steganography into a new generic solution called Encryption Compression Aggregation Security Scheme (ECASS). While focusing on the specific case of Medical Healthcare Systems, ECASS aims to secure private data exchanges over wireless networks while achieving lower energy consumption and communication overhead. Our simulations with the NS-2.35 simulator are showing an improvement of 40 and 50% in terms of energy consumption and communication overhead respectively compared to the IBE-Lite security scheme. - Abstract
Driving styles reflect the performance and the ability of drivers to drive in a safe and protective manner. As some of them would possibly result into harmful behaviors, the recognition of these styles continue to attract intensive investigations from the transportation community. In spite of the current promising results, the existing approaches did not yet address the management of simultaneous driving behaviors that are exhibited by a driver during the same commute. They did not also explicitly investigate the legal implication of these driving styles. To this end, we argue that intelligent collaborative solutions could adequately handle the constantly changing traffic environment, prevent aberrant driving behaviors, classify driving styles, and identify the right road traffic policies to apply at the right time to the right driver. Therefore, we are proposing a new intelligent divide-and-conquer approach that aims to process concurrent driver's driving behaviors and identify the related driving styles, accordingly. Our solution relies on a four-layer Multi-Agent System (MAS) architecture, where intelligent agents execute injection, filtering, action, and feedback processing steps to ultimately generate personalized recommendations and feedback to drivers. For the sake of illustration, we collected driving data about braking and acceleration behaviors via our dedicated mobile app AWARIDE. We successfully classified the driving styles into aggressive, normal, and conservative. We also successfully identified the transitions between these styles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PROTECTED areas , *NATIONAL parks & reserves , *PARK use , *TRAILS , *MOBILE apps - Abstract
Visitor mobility in protected areas is often a challenge as manual map reading and finding a route consume the time. This paper presents a digital tool that provides valuable information for both the visitors and the managers of protected areas. The app provides assistance to users to generate, access, and record hiking routes within the protected area. A route planner was created to generate user-specific alternative routes taking into account the user's preferences in terms of distance, preferred landscape, level of accessibility, etc. The app also provides the users with basic information on the park, including captivating points, typical flora, and fauna. Moreover, visitors and park management can communicate with each other through exchanging messages and suggestions. The pilot validation test performed with 20 participants and real-time test from 68 park visitors revealed that all the functionality of the app is in order and the app enhances the mobility experience of the user within Hoge Kempen National Park. Furthermore, regular use of the app from users will generate rich data that is valuable for visitor management purposes, for example, the number of trips per day, the average duration of visits and popular segments. INTERNET of things , *BLOCKCHAINS , *INFORMATION sharing , *DATA security , *ENERGY consumption - Abstract
Despite of their increasing popularity, Internet of Things (IoT) platforms are still suffering from major security problems, particularly during communications between the IoT devices. Indeed, these devices are commonly prone to malicious attacks and require prior mutual authentication to guarantee the confidentiality and security of data being shared as well as a proper network operation. In order to deal with this issue, several researchers have proposed the use of the emergent blockchain paradigm, which has emerged as a key technology that will transform the way in which information will be shared. As this paradigm is facing scalability and flexibility problems, the use of multi-agents systems has been adopted in recent works. However, current solutions are using agents for the rudimentary role of data collection only. In this paper, we propose to secure the IoT platform with a multilevel blockchain system (MBS) where the speed and flexibility of blockchain transactions are enforced by mobile agents which are migrating throughout the IoT network. The simulations of our solution through the Hyperledger Fabric are showing relevant results in terms of response time and energy consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CONVOLUTIONAL neural networks , *INTELLIGENT transportation systems , *TRAFFIC safety , *SUPPORT vector machines , *FEATURE extraction , *MAXIMUM power point trackers - Abstract
Next-generation intelligent transportation systems are based on the acquisition of ambient data that influence traffic flow and safety. Among these, is the ambient visibility range whose estimation, in the presence of fog, is extremely useful for next-generation intelligent transportation systems. However, existing camera-based approaches are based on "engineered features" extraction methods that use computer algorithms and procedures from the image processing field. In this contribution, a novel approach to estimate visibility range under foggy weather conditions is proposed which is based on "learned features" instead. More precisely, we use AlexNet deep convolutional neural network (DCNN), trained with raw image data, for feature extraction and a support vector machine (SVM) for visibility range estimation. Our quantitative analysis showed that the proposed approach is very promising in estimating the visibility range with very good accuracy. The proposed solution can pave the way towards intelligent driveway assistance systems to enhance awareness of driving weather conditions and hence mitigate the safety risks emanating from fog-induced low visibility conditions. Street vending is an essential part of the urban informal economy in developing countries. Related to rapid urbanization and socio-economic challenges, studies have proposed comprehensive street design and management that accommodate sidewalk vendors efficiently. To this end, this paper evaluated the effect of three alternatives to integrate sidewalk vendors on average pedestrian density. A social-force based pedestrian microsimulation model (PTV-Viswalk-11) was calibrated using a macroscopic approach. A calibrated model was then used to evaluate the effect of a kiosk, a sidewalk vendor in frontage, and a sidewalk vendor in furniture zones on pedestrian movement under different scenarios. Results indicated that the average pedestrian density varied with the location and width of the vending stall, width of the walkway, pedestrian flow and the presence of a customer interacting with a vendor. The paper concludes with recommendations for planners and local authorities. • Evaluation of the effect of three alternatives of sidewalk vendors on average pedestrian density. • A social-force based pedestrian model (PTV-Viswalk-11) was calibrated using a macroscopic approach. • Location and width of vending stalls, walkway width, pedestrian flow and presence of customer effect pedestrian density. EMISSIONS (Air pollution) , *CYCLING , *OUTDOOR recreation , *ALGORITHMS - Abstract
Informational interventions are important to bring positive changes in attitudes and perception among individuals. In relation to the individual's mobility behavior, habits, attitudes, and perceptions are difficult to change. Therefore, it is vital to identify relatively soft aspects of travel behavior with a potential to reduce the negative impacts of mobility on the environment and individual health. This paper provides a methodological framework and describes the development of a computational algorithm that helps to identify soft changes in the travel behavior. The algorithm is based on a variety of different data sources such as activity-travel diaries and related constraint information, meteorological conditions, bicycle and public transport supply data, and emissions and air pollutant concentrations data. A variety of rules that are part of the algorithm are derived from the transport modeling literature, where constraints and factors were examined for activity-travel decisions. Three major aspects of activity-travel behavior, such as reduced car use, cold start of car engines, and participation in non-mandatory outdoor activities are considered in assessing pro-environmental potential. The algorithm is applied to collected small datasets from citizens of Hasselt (Belgium), Bologna (Italy), and Guildford (UK). A significant replaceable potential for car trips within 3 km to cycling and car trips to public transport has been found. The replaceable potential of excessive cold starts and participation in non-mandatory outdoor activities were also found, to some extent, to bring positive changes in the environment. In future research, these identified potentials are reported back to individuals with their consequence as part of a mobility-based informational intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FOG , *TRAFFIC flow , *WEATHER , *TRAFFIC safety , *SYSTEM safety - Abstract
Sudden visibility reductions on highways due to foggy weather conditions often lead to a drastic increase in car crash risks. Indeed, fog formation distorts drivers' perception and judgment of inter-vehicular distances, vehicles' speeds, and braking distances. In order to support drivers in dealing with the impact of fog, various on-board warning systems are being deployed today. Despite their added value, these systems are still in need of efficient solutions supporting smooth vehicle's acceleration/deceleration profiles. This is to avoid sudden braking (hence, higher car crash risks) incurred by sensor technologies restricted to line of sight measurements. To meet this goal, we advocate in this paper a Wireless Fog Warning System (WFWS) where cooperative awareness messages are disseminated and used for calculating acceleration/deceleration activities. Without loss of generality, we build on IEEE 802.11p WLAN as a basis technology. Using simulations on the open-source vehicular network simulation framework Veins, we demonstrate both the potential of such a system for increasing safety and smoothing traffic flow—as well as of computer simulation as a means of its evaluation. - Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

Carpooling for commuting can save cost and helps in reducing pollution. An automatic Web based Global CarPooling Matching Service (GCPMS) for matching commuting trips has been designed. The service supports carpooling candidates by supplying advice during their exploration for potential partners. Such services collect data about the candidates, and base their advice for each pair of trips to be combined, on an estimate of the probability for successful negotiation between the candidates to carpool. The probability values are calculated by a learning mechanism using, on one hand, the registered person and trip characteristics, and on the other hand, the negotiation feedback. The problem of maximizing the expected value of carpooling negotiation success was formulated and was proved to be NP-hard. In addition, the network characteristics for a realistic case have been analyzed. The carpooling network was established using results predicted by the operational FEATHERS activity based model for Flanders (Belgium). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This thesis aims to explore the business opportunity of launching a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform for tourists in Brussels so they can route-plan, book tickets and explore touristic deals in the same platform. In Chapter 1 , the reader will find an introduction with problem statement, justification, hypothesis, research questions and scope. In Chapter 2, the reader will find a review in the literature related to MaaS concept, Brussels tourism and mobility service providers current initiatives related to MaaS. Also, a review of the MaaS core stakeholders and the main MaaS platform features that should be provided. Then, in Chapter 3 there is an explanation of data collection plan from surveys to tourists in main Brussels arrival hubs, interviews to key stakeholders and the elaboration of a lean start up Business Plan. Chapter 4 contains the main results from costumer and industry feedback that helps, in Chapter 5, to build a lean startup business plan to create SNEL app, the first tourist MaaS operator in Brussels. Finally, in Chapter 6 the reader will find a section with conclusions and recommendations. In conclusion, the business plan proposed here confirms that is indeed feasible to build a Tourist MaaS operator, but it could not be profitable until the 3 year of operations and only internationally scalable until roaming or MaaS standardization is in place.

- Abstract
This master thesis dissertation was structured in a manner that can be clearly distinguished 2 main parts: a more theoretical part (Chapter 1 to 6) and a more practical/analytical part (Chapters 6 to 8). The more theoretical part of the thesis is composed of the introduction, the literature review and methodology proposed for the data analysis. The introduction contains the general framework of this research like the objectives, research question and assumptions for the analysis, besides the background of the problem. The literature review covers three relevant sub-topics: the role of safe vehicles to achieve road safety improvement, the situation of Latin America regarding road safety and the problem of unsafe vehicles in this region, and finally the creation of Latin NCAP, the work they have been conducting since 2010 and the estimations of the safety score/ratings. Posterior to this theoretical part of the thesis there is a chapter describing in detail the methodology adopted for the data collection, data processing and the post-processing of the results for their correct interpretation. The second part of this thesis is focused on the more analytical part of the research based on the data collection, processing, post-processing and analysis of results. Posteriorly it will take place a discussion about the results of the research and what implications could be extracted from them. The final part of thesis (chapters 9 and 10) are dedicated to the conclusions of the thesis and scientific-based recommendations.

Informational interventions are important to bring positive changes in attitudes and perception among individuals. In relation to the individual’s mobility behavior, habits, attitudes, and perceptions are difficult to change. Three major aspects of activitytravel behavior, such as reduced car use, cold start of car engines, and participation in non-mandatory outdoor activities are considered in assessing pro-environmental potential. This project has received funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreement no. 689954.

- Abstract
Drones are one of the most relevant emerging technologies of the modern era for they are a truly cost-effective solution for a wide range of business affairs. However, this technology has raised safety and security concerns among the general public. The investigation seeks to unveil elements that are essential to understand regarding recent developments and concerns that are later reflected in public policies. The first part of the investigation consists of in-depth interviews to industry players in Hasselt. The second research tool is an online survey addressed to the general population of Hasselt in which their concerns and preferences are polled. The investigation has confirmed that the true capabilities of drones are not faithfully perceived by the general population. Given the polled drone-related cases, the most promising applications for drones are the transport of high-value goods between well-defined locations like business-to-business operations or between medical centers. Thus, there should be a gradual deployment of proven safe business cases as these will gradually shift perception from skepticism to approval. However, doing so would directly interfere with the anticipated growth for this market. The future of this research lies on using this investigation as input for polling a truly potential business case.

ComputerSystemsOrganization_MISCELLANEOUS - Abstract
Governments invest a lot of money in the road network and the automated vehicle will play a role in the future. The research question is: How can the current investments in the road network be made sustainable for the introduction of automated vehicles? The communication between cars and infrastructure will be with WI-FI-P and 5G communication. Traffic signs will disappear but not all traffic signs be removed. The road authority probably will invest less in physical and more in the digital infrastructure. Telecom providers will play a role in the digital infrastructure. Interviews with experts are combined with the literature to study case studies. The first case is about the enforcement. The police should invest in WI-FI-P equipment to communicate with automated vehicles. The second case is the Flemish traffic sign database. To keep it up-to-date there is need of a rapid response team. Intersections will change a lot, there will be need for a small server at each intersection to receive the signals from the vehicles. The fourth case is about governmental asset management. Governments should be responsive against quicker response times for maintenance. Another case is about road works. The role of the traffic centre will play a role in it by communicating directly to the vehicles. Overall, it is important to invest in a central database where different stakeholders can tap in for different purposes. Governments should invest in in-car systems used by WI-FI-P and 5G. It is less useful to invest in roadside systems.
