Layered Li-rich Ni, Mn, Co (NMC) oxide cathodes in Li-ion batteries provide high specific capacities (>250 mAh/g) via O-redox at high voltages. However, associated high-voltage interfacial degradation processes require strategies for effective electrode surface passivation. Here, we show that an acidic surface treatment of a Li-rich NMC layered oxide cathode material leads to a substantial suppression of CO 2 and O 2 evolution, ∼90% and ∼100% respectively, during the first charge up to 4.8 V vs Li +/0 . CO 2 suppression is related to Li 2 CO 3 removal as well as effective surface passivation against electrolyte degradation. This treatment does not result in any loss of discharge capacity and provides superior long-term cycling and rate performance in comparison to as-received, untreated materials. We also quantify the extent of lattice oxygen participation in charge compensation ("O-redox") during Li + removal by a novel ex situ acid titration. Our results indicate that the peroxo-like species resulting from O-redox originate on the surface at least 300 mV earlier than the activation plateau region at around 4.5 V. X-ray photoelectron spectra and Mn L-edge X-ray absorption spectra of the cathode powders reveal a Li + deficiency and a partial reduction of Mn ions on the surface of the acid-treated material. More interestingly, although the irreversible oxygen evolution is greatly suppressed through the surface treatment, O K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering shows that the lattice O-redox behavior is largely sustained. The acidic treatment, therefore, only optimizes the surface of the Li-rich material and almost eliminates the irreversible gas evolution, leading to improved cycling and rate performance. This work therefore presents a simple yet effective approach to passivate cathode surfaces against interfacial instabilities during high-voltage battery operation.

As a parent compound of Li-rich electrodes, Li 2 MnO 3 exhibits high capacity during the initial charge; however, it suffers notoriously low Coulombic efficiency due to oxygen and surface activities. Here, we successfully optimize the oxygen activities toward reversible oxygen redox reactions by intentionally introducing protons into lithium octahedral vacancies in the Li 2 MnO 3 system with its original structural integrity maintained. Combining structural probes, theoretical calculations, and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering results, a moderate coupling between the introduced protons and lattice oxygen at the oxidized state is revealed, which stabilizes the oxygen activities during charging. Such a coupling leads to an unprecedented initial Coulombic efficiency (99.2%) with a greatly improved discharge capacity of 302 mAh g -1 in the protonated Li 2 MnO 3 electrodes. These findings directly demonstrate an effective concept for controlling oxygen activities in Li-rich systems, which is critical for developing high-energy cathodes in batteries.

Aims: High-salt diet is linked to hypertension, and prenatal high-salt diet increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases in the offspring. The present study investigated whether and how prenatal high-salt diet influenced nitric oxide-mediated vasodilatation in the offspring., Methods and Results: Pregnant rats were fed either normal-salt (1% sodium chloride) or high-salt (8% sodium chloride) diet during gestation. Experiments were conducted in 5-month-old male offspring. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP, nitric oxide donor)-induced hypotensive responses (in vivo) and vascular dilatation (in vitro) was significantly attenuated (Emax: 84 ± 2 vs. 51 ± 2, high-salt vs. control, P < 0.001) in the high-salt offspring, indicating reduced vascular relaxations. Pretreatment with Tempol (reactive oxygen species scavenger) alleviated this attenuation. The high-salt offspring showed an increased level of oxidative stress markers in both mesenteric arteries and plasma samples. The antioxidant activity, serum superoxide dismutase and catalase were significantly reduced, whereas malondialdehyde was increased in the high-salt offspring. O2 production, and protein expression of Nox2 and Nox4 in mesenteric arteries was significantly increased in the high-salt offspring whereas Nox1 showed no changes. The local renin-angiotensin system in mesenteric arteries was activated, associated with an increased NADPH oxidase. DNA methylation at the proximal promoter of angiotensin-converting enzyme gene in the lung was significantly increased in the high-salt offspring (P = 0.004)., Conclusion: The results suggest that prenatal high-salt diet impairs nitric oxide-mediated vasodilatation because of the increased oxidative stress-affected renin-angiotensin system in the high-salt offspring, providing new information for understanding, and early prevention of cardiovascular diseases in fetal origins.

Addicted drugs like nicotine affect autonomic nervous system that results in arrhythmia and other cardiovascular diseases. Notable effects of Zen meditation on autonomic nervous system have been reported during the past decade. Holistic Detox Association (HDA) in Taiwan offered Zen-meditation program to drug addicts as the core scheme among a variety of drug addiction treatments. This paper reports the results of quantifying the cardiorespiratory interactions and autonomic nervous system function to evaluate the on-site effect of Zen meditation on drug rehab. Methods and schemes for quantifying time-domain heart rate variability were employed to electrocardiograph and respiratory signals. Peak-valley method was developed to quantify the respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) behavior. Poincaré Plot Analysis was adopted to evaluate the cardiorespiratory functioning. Among 18 voluntary drug addicts during the 10-minute Zen meditation session, about two-third subjects have significant improvement in autonomic nervous system function characterized by heart rate variability (SDNN, RMSSD and pNN50). Group average of RSA increases from 33.43 ms(Rest) to 69.14 ms(AR Zen meditation). Poincaré-plot analysis reveals the improvement of SD1, SD2 and SD2/SD1 by respectively 14.7%, 19.8% and 8.8%. The group averages of all the parameters exhibit significantly positive changes in the 10-minute session of abdominal-respiration Zen meditation. Even the subject with heart transplant showed the improvement of all the quantitative indicators during the AR Zen meditation.

Mutations in the Aristaless-Related Homeobox (ARX) gene cause structural anomalies of the brain, epilepsy, and neurocognitive deficits in children. During forebrain development, Arx is expressed in both pallial and subpallial progenitor cells. We previously demonstrated that elimination of Arx from subpallial-derived cortical interneurons generates an epilepsy phenotype with features overlapping those seen in patients with ARX mutations. In this report, we have selectively removed Arx from pallial progenitor cells that give rise to the cerebral cortical projection neurons. While no discernable seizure activity was recorded, these mice exhibited a peculiar constellation of behaviors. They are less anxious, less social, and more active when compared with their wild-type littermates. The overall cortical thickness was reduced, and the corpus callosum and anterior commissure were hypoplastic, consistent with a perturbation in cortical connectivity. Taken together, these data suggest that some of the structural and behavioral anomalies, common in patients with ARX mutations, are specifically due to alterations in pallial progenitor function. Furthermore, our data demonstrate that some of the neurobehavioral features found in patients with ARX mutations may not be due to on-going seizures, as is often postulated, given that epilepsy was eliminated as a confounding variable in these behavior analyses., (© The Author 2014. The comparative study on the electro-generation of H2O2 using an activated carbon fiber cathode and graphite cathode was investigated. The effect of the operating parameters on the H2O2 generation concentration and current efficiency, such as the initial pH, current density and electrolyte concentration, was also evaluated. The results revealed that the activated carbon fiber cathode was more effective compared to the graphite cathode. The maximum value of H2O2 concentration could be achieved with pH 3.00, current density 8.89 mA/cm2 and electrolyte concentration 0.05 mol/L. However, due to the formation of competitive electrode reactions, the current efficiency of this electrolysis system is lower than other electrolysis system. In addition, a new kinetic model was established to well describe the electro-generation of H2O2. The experimental data were fitted well using the kinetic model.

In this paper, we address the problem of landmark matching based retinal image registration. Two major contributions render our registration algorithm distinguished from many previous methods. One is a novel landmark-matching formulation which enables not only a joint estimation of the correspondences and transformation model but also the optimization with linear programming. The other contribution lies in the introduction of a reinforced self-similarities descriptor in characterizing the local appearance of landmarks. Theoretical analysis and a series of preliminary experimental results show both the effectiveness of our optimization scheme and the high differentiating ability of our features.

Objective: To assess the feasibility of usage of microbubbles conjugated with RGD peptides and contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEU) in detection of tumor angiogenesis., Methods: Lipid microbubbles (MB) were prepared, and the RGD peptides were covalently conjugated to the lipid shell of MB (MB(RGD)). Six nude mice with tumor created by dorsal inoculation of HepG2 tumor cells were used as the test group. Six nude mice without tumor were served as the control group. 10 minutes after bolus injection of MB and MB(RGD) randomly (30 min interval) via a tail vein catheter, CEU was performed on the tumors of the test group and the thigh skeletal muscles of control group. The video intensity (VI) of tumors and the skeletal muscles were measured. The tumors and the skeletal muscles were harvested for immunohistochemical examination., Results: Only a slight contrast enhancement of the tumor was seen with MB, and the VI was 5.33 ± 1.71. While a remarkable enhancement of the tumor was observed after injection of MB(RGD). The VI was up to 17.03 ± 3.58, 3.18 folds higher as compared with that obtained by injection of MB (P < 0.05). As expected, there were no obvious contrast enhancement of the skeletal muscles with both MB(RGD) and MB. There was a high expression of αvβ3-integrin in tumor neovascular endothelium, however, no apparent expression of αvβ3-integrin was observed in the skeletal muscle vascular endothelium., Conclusion: CEU with MB(RGD) can be used to effectively evaluate the angiogenesis of tumors, and it may greatly contribute to the early judgement of the nature of tumor.

Objective: To investigate the drag-reducing effect of polyethylene oxide (PEO) on the velocity of red blood cells in rat cremaster microcirculation., Methods: Blood samples were collected from 6 Wistar male rats (100-110 g) via the post-orbital venous plexus. The red blood cells were separated by centrifugation and labeled by fluorescinisothiocyate (FITC). After successful establishment of cremaster model, the labeled red blood cells were injected into the jugular vein, and the microcirculation was observed and recorded under fluorescence microscope. The hemodynamic parameters and microcirculation video was recorded every 4 min since 4 min before PEO or normal saline injection. Both PEO (10 ppm) and normal saline was injected into the same rat in random sequence at a constant rate of 3.5 ml/h for 20 min followed by observation for another 20 min. The velocity of the labeled-red blood cells was determined by IPP 6.0 software., Results: Compared with normal saline, PEO significantly increased the velocity of the red blood cells in the rat cremaster microcirculation (498.7-/+182.89 microm/s vs 773.54-/+308.27 microm/s, P=0.012). No significant changes in the heart rate and arterial blood pressure were observed during the experiment (P=0.836, P=0.420)., Conclusion: PEO at an extremely low concentration can significantly increase the velocity of the red blood cells in rat cremaster microcirculation and produces no significant impact on heart rate and arterial blood pressure.

Objective: To assess the binding ability of microbubbles targeted to alphavbeta3-integrin (MBp) for thrombus-targeted contrast-enhanced ultrasound., Methods: Targeted microbubbles were prepared by conjugating the monoclonal antibody against alphavbeta3-integrin to lipid shell of the microbubble via the avidin-biotin bridges. Equivalent isotype control microbubbles (MB) or targeted ultrasound microbubbles (MBp) were randomly added into the flow chamber. After a 30-min incubation with the thrombus fixed in an agarose flow chamber model, the thrombus was washed with a continuous flow of PBS solution (15 cm/s) for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 min, followed by thrombus imaging using contrast-enhanced ultrasound and measurement of the video intensity (VI) values of the images., Results: The VI of the thrombus in MBp group was reduced by 28%-66%, while that in control MB group was decreased by 87%-94%, and the VI values of the thrombus group were significantly greater in former group at each of the time points (P<0.05)., Conclusion: MBP has good targeting ability to the thrombus with resistance to the shear stress after adhesion to the thrombus. In vitro evaluation of the thrombus-binding capability of the targeted microbubble (MBp) by simulating the shear stress in vivo can be helpful for predicting the in vivo effects of ultrasonic molecular imaging using MBp.

Objective: To investigate the impact of high-dose microbubbles induced by high mechanical index myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) on vascular permeability and its recovery time in rats., Methods: Thirty male Wistar rats were randomized into 4 MCE groups (groups A-D) and a control group. In the MCE groups, Evans blue was injected at 10 s before MCE (A), immediately after the end of MCE (B), and at 5 min (C) and 20 min after the end of MCE (D). In the control group, the microbubbles and Evans blue were injected at the end of a 5-min ultrasound exposure. All the rats were sacrificed 5 min after Evans blue injection, and the content of Evans blue in the myocardium and the percentage of Evans blue leakage area were determined., Results: The percentage of Evans blue leakage area in groups A, B and C were significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05), while the percentage was similar between group D and the control group (P>0.05). Evans blue contents in groups A and B were significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05), but groups C and D showed comparable contents with the control group E (P>0.05). No significant changes of the heart rates and premature beat number were observed during and after MCE in these groups (P>0.05)., Conclusion: High mechanical index MCE and a high contrast dose may induce increased microvascular leakage in rats, and the vascular permeability can recover in 20 min after MCE.

Objective: To assess the feasibility of evaluating myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury in mouse with targeted myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE)., Methods: Phospholipid microbubbles targeted to P-selectin (MBp) and control microbubbles (MBc) were created by conjugating monoclonal antibody against murine P-selectin or isotype control antibody with the lipid shell via "avidin-biotin" bridging. Ten mice with myocardial ischemia-reperfusion were injected intravenously of MBp and MBc in a random order with a 30 min interval. After 5 min of intravenous injection of microbubble, targeted MCE imaging was performed in all mice. And then the video intensity (VI) was determined., Results: A significant ultrasonic enhancement was observed in ischemic region of MBp-group. Increment in VI value of ischemic region in MBp-group was great and it amounted to (26.0 +/- 6.2) U. However, increment in VI value of ischemic region in MBc-group was minor and it was merely (9.1 +/- 0.9) U. Difference was evident in ischemic region between of two groups (P < 0.05). In both MBp-group and MBc-group, the VI value of ischemic region was significantly greater than that of non-ischemic region (6.5 +/- 1.0) U vs (6.4 +/- 0.8) U (P < 0.05). There was no obvious difference in the VI of non-ischemic region between two groups., Conclusion: Molecular imaging of P-selectin with targeted contrast echocardiography can effectively evaluate myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Background & Objective: Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) of Epstein-Barr (EB) virus is an important oncogene. Fascin is an actin cross-linking protein involved in cell migration and adhesion. Phosphorylated signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (pStat3) is a member of STATs family, which is closely related to tumorigenesis. This study was to investigate expressions of LMP1, Fascin and pStat3 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) tissues and lymph node metastases of NPC, thus to explore their correlations to the initiation and progression of NPC., Methods: Expressions of EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER), LMP1, Fascin, pStat3, p53, Ki-67 and Bcl-2 were detected in 43 NPC tissues (21 with and 22 without lymph node metastases) and 21 corresponding lymph node metastases using in situ hybridization or immunohistochemistry (IHC). Data were statistically analyzed. Expressions of pStat3 and Fascin were measured in the NPC cell line CNE1 transfected with LMP1-expressing plasmid using Western blot., Results: Positive EBER expression was detected in all 43 NPC tissues and 21 lymph node metastases in NPC. The expression rates of LMP1, Fascin, pStat3, p53, Ki-67, and Bcl-2 were 69.8% (30/43), 93.0% (40/43), 72.1% (31/43), 90.7% (39/43), 88.4% (38/43) and 88.4% (38/43)in 43 NPC tissues, respectively. LMP1 expression was positively correlated with the expression level of Fascin, pStat3, p53, Ki-67 and Bcl-2 in 43 NPC cases(P < 0.05). LMP1 was found in 10 out of 21 (46.7%) lymph node metastases in NPC. In addition, LMP1 expression dramatically increased pStat3 and Fascin in CNE1 cells., Conclusions: LMP1 is expressed in lymph node metastatases in NPC. The expression of LMP1 is positively correlated with Fascin, pStat3 and the proliferation index of tumor cells. Moreover, LMP1 up-regulates pStat3 and Fascin in NPC cells.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a phospholipid-coated microbubble contrast agent for myocardium opacification in comparison with a albumin-coated microbubble contrast agent (Quanfuxian)., Methods: In 10 dogs with single coronary artery stenosis involving the anterior descending branch or circumflex branch randomly received infusion of the two contrast agents through the femoral vein. The myocardial blood flow, heart rate and blood pressure were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The concentration and the particle diameter of the two contrast agents were determined., Results: The concentration of the phospholipid-coated microbubbles was (1.06-/+0.22) x10(9)/ml, with a diameter of 3.04-/+0.34 microm, similar to the concentration and diameter of Quanfuxian ((1.31-/+0.33)x10(9)/ml and 2.88-/+0.58 microm, respectively, P>0.05). Both of the agents achieved grade three myocardium opacification, and produced no obvious effect on the heart rate and blood pressure. Quantitative analysis of myocardial opacification in terms of myocardial blood volume (A), blood velocity (beta), and blood flow (A x beta) revealed no significant difference between the two agents (P>0.05), and the parameters derived from the two agents showed good correlations (P<0.05, rA=0.809, r beta=0.932, rA.beta=0.925)., Conclusion: The phospholipid-coated microbubble contrast agent shows good effect for myocardial opacification without significant difference from Quanfuxian. Both of the agents are good ultrasound contrast agents for quantitative analysis of myocardium blood flow.

Objective: To investigate the effects of ultrasound mediated microbubble destruction on capillary permeability in rat skeletal muscles., Methods: Eighteen SD rats were randomized into 3 groups, namely the Evans blue (EB) group, EB+ultrasound (E+U) group and EB+microbubble+ultrasound (U+E+M) group with corresponding treatments, using EB injected into the carotid artery as the indicator for capillary permeability. The microbubbles were injected through the carotid artery with fixed ultrasound parameters. The spillover of EB was estimated under fluorescence microscope according to the visual staining scores. The contents of EB in the skeletal muscles were calculated according to the standard curve and spectrophotometry., Results: EB spillover was observed around the capillaries in E+U+M group, which had a significantly higher visual score than EB group and E+U group (0 and 0-1, respectively, P<0.05). The EB content was 51.57-/+3.89 microg/g in E+U+M group, also significantly higher than those in EB group (28.99-/+4.67 microg/g) and E+U group (30.99-/+4.11 microg/g) (P<0.05)., Conclusion: Exposure to both ultrasound and microbubble contrast agents results in increased capillary permeability of rat skeletal muscles, which might be an important mechanisms for gene delivery enhancement by ultrasound contrast agents.

Objective: To investigate the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) BamH I "f" variant in primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and its metastases in lymph nodes (LN)., Methods: In situ hybridization was used to detect EBV-encoded small RNA (EBER) expression in 21 paired paraffin-embedded tissue from primary NPC and their lymph node metastases and 22 primary NPC without lymph node metastasis. PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay were used to detect EBV BamH I "f" variant in all cases of NPCs, lymph node metastases and 50 cases of chronic inflammation of nasopharynx from Canton., Results: All cases of NPCs and their lymph node metastases showed EBER expression, indicating a high EBV-positive rate in Cantonese NPC patients. EBV BamH I "f" variant was found in 11 cases (52.4%, 11/21) of primary NPCs with LN metastasis, 12 cases (57.1%, 12/21) of the LN metastases, and 18 cases (81.8%, 18/22) of primary NPCs without LN metastasis. However, of the 50 cases of chronic inflammation of nasopharynx, only one case (2.1%, 1/47) demonstrated BamH I "f" variant. The frequency of BamH I "f" variant in NPC was therefore dramatically higher than that in chronic inflammation of nasopharynx. It is of note that atypical hyperplasia was observed in a few epithelial cells from the case of chronic inflammation of nasopharynx expressing BamH I "f" variant., Conclusions: The frequency of EBV BamH I "f" variant in NPC is significantly higher than that in chronic inflammation of nasopharynx. It is the first demonstration that the BamH I "f" variant is also present in the LN metastases of NPC. The frequency of BamH I "f" variant in metastatic NPC of the lymph node is almost equal to that of primary NPCs.

This paper introduces a novel solver, namely cross entropy (CE), into the MRF theory for medical image segmentation. The solver, which is based on the theory of rare event simulation, is general and stochastic. Unlike some popular optimization methods such as belief propagation and graph cuts, CE makes no assumption on the form of objective functions and thus can be applied to any type of MRF models. Furthermore, it achieves higher performance of finding more global optima because of its stochastic property. In addition, it is more efficient than other stochastic methods like simulated annealing. We tested the new solver in 4 series of segmentation experiments on synthetic and clinical, vascular and cerebral images. The experiments show that CE can give more accurate segmentation results.

Objective: To investigate the mutant alleles of thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) among Jing Chinese., Methods: Polymerse chain reaction-single strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP) techniques were developed for assaying exons 5, 7 and 10 of the TPMT gene respectively and were used to detect mutant TPMT alleles among Jing Chinese., Results: Two cases of TPMT*3C (A719G) heterozygotes were identified in 103 Jing Chinese; other deleterious alleles such as TPMT*2 (G238C), TPMT*3A (G460A/A719G) and TPMT*3B (G460A) were not found; 27 cases of silent mutant allele TPMT*1S (T474C) were also identified (5 homozygotes and 22 heterozygotes)., Conclusion: The PCR-SSCP assay established and adopted in this study was sensitive and reliable, which could be used to detect mutant TPMT alleles. Allele frequency of TPMT*3C is low among Jing Chinese (1.0%), and TPMT*3C appears to be the most prevalent deleterious allele in this population.

Background & Objective: Several mutations in the thiopurine S-methyltransferase(TPMT) gene have been identified to correlate with a low activity or deficiency phenotype. The distribution of TPMT activity in Chinese and Caucasian populations is different, and the molecular basis has not yet to be determined. This study was designed to investigate the type and frequency of four kinds of mutant TPMT alleles of healthy Han Chinese., Methods: TPMT genotypes were determined in 225 healthy Han Chinese. Allele-specific PCR (ASPCR) and PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) were used for analysis of G238C (TPMT*2), G460A and A719G (TPMT*3A,*3B,*3C)., Results: TPMT*2, TPMT*3B, and TPMT*3A were not detected in 225 healthy Han Chinese, and only six TPMT*3C heterozygotes were identified. The average TPMT activity of those TPMT*3C heterozygotes was (9.62+/-3.58) U/ml RBC. The frequency of TPMT mutant alleles was 1.33%(6/450) in healthy Han Chinese., Conclusion: The frequency of the known mutant TPMT alleles in Han Chinese population is low, and TPMT*3C appears to be the most prevalent among the known mutant TPMT allele in this population.
