Thousands of antiwar demonstrators filled the streets of Jakarta, Indonesia to voice their opposition to a U.S.-led war against Iraq, which seems to be all but inevitable. American ambassador, Ralph Boyce, has been leading a U.S. public-relations campaign trying to make his country's case against Iraq both to the Indonesian government and its people. While the current administration has praised the reform efforts of current President Megawati Sukarnoputri and considers Indonesia an invaluable partner in its global war on terrorism, U.S. government officials found themselves in a tough spot when a recent FBI investigation into the ambush murders of several Americans in Indonesia's easternmost province of West Papua concluded that members of the Indonesian military organized and carried out the attacks in what the investigators called a clear case of blackmail and intimidation.
