502. Fabrication of basil oil Nanoemulsion loaded gellan gum hydrogel—evaluation of its antibacterial and anti-biofilm potential

- Abstract
The pathogenic suppression of infectious agents is an ongoing strategy to tackle threats from microbial infections. In this regard, we developed and characterized a stable basil oil nanoemulsion-filled hydrogel that combats microbial pathogenicity and enhances the antimicrobial potential. Basil oil was extracted from Ocimum basilicum using the hydrodistillation extraction method. Furthermore, bioactive compounds of extracted basil oil were identified using GC-MS. Basil oil nanoemulsion (BNE) was developed using the ultrasonic emulsification method by incorporating basil oil, span 60, and water. Later, the formulated nanoemulsions were grafted with the gellan gum-based hydrogel matrix. The BNE was evaluated for globule size, zeta potential, FTIR analysis, and surface texture by SEM. A study was conducted to analyze antimicrobial sensitivity, the minimum inhibitory concentration, anti-biofilm potential, and membrane integrity for gram-positive, gram-negative bacterial and fungal strains. The BNE formed with minimum droplet dimensions of 49.2 nm with a zeta-potential of −33 mV showed much more kinetic stability. The developed basil oil nanoemulsion hydrogels (BNEHs) showed enhanced antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis and staphylococcus aureus with their ability to impair the consistency of the cell membrane. In addition, the BNEH reported a 20% increase in antibiofilm activity than BNE. The findings demonstrate the possibility of using BNE and BNEH against different microbial pathogens such as potential anti microbial and anti biofilm agents. Further it could be tested for its topical delivery efficacy.

504. Formation of Interfacial Reaction Products in Al-4Si-1Mg/SiC Composite

- Abstract
In Al/SiC composite, Al and SiC reacts and forms Al4C3at the interface according to the reaction 4A1 + 3SiC → Al4C3+ 3Si. Hence in the present work, the Al-4Si-1Mg/SiC is fabricated through stir casting process. The fabricated composite is also ultrasonically treated prior to superheating to induce the interfacial reaction. The as cast composite and the ultrasonic treated composite are superheated at 900°C and computer aided cooling curve analysis is performed in the composite for different time to quantify the extent of interfacial reaction and to study the solidification behaviour. The Si released as a by-product can alter the composition and solidification behaviour. The salt flux reclamation technique is employed to extract the interfacial reaction products from the composite. The reclaimed powders are subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis and confirmed the presence of Al4C3particles, which be used for grain refinement applications.

The measurements of experimental densities (ρ) and speeds of sound (u) of binary mixtures of 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene (1,2,4-TCB) with alkyl acetates namely methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, propyl acetate, butyl acetate and pentyl acetate have been done over the entire composition range at four different temperatures (T = 303.15, 308.15, 313.15 and 318.15 K) and pressure (P = 0.1 MPa). The intermolecular interactions present in these mixtures were briefly explained through the calculated excess molar volume (VmE), excess isentropic compressibility (κSE) and excess speeds of sound (uE). The ideal and excess parameters were correlated with Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. Different theoretical models such as PFP theory, CFT and FLT have been used to analyze the experimental results of VmEand uvalues respectively. The strength of intermolecular interactions between the component molecules have been confirmed using the excess properties and the results were further analyzed with FT-IR spectroscopic technique.

- Abstract
We demonstrated a simple way of evaluating the duty cycle error in periodically polled lithium niobate(PPLN) based on the method of binary phase diffraction grating. To demonstrate this method, -Z face etched PPLN of desired periods were fabricated by the standard electric field poling technique. The etched PPLN was considered as a surface-relief binary phase grating. The diffraction patterns were recorded for different spatial locations along the length of the sample. The experimentally observed efficiencies of the diffracted orders were compared with the theoretically calculated values to estimate the duty cycle error.

- Abstract
Spectral and structural studies of N,N′dimethylN,N′bispyridin2ylmethyl1,2diaminoethane L1, N,N′dimethylN,N′bispyridin2ylmethyl1,3diaminopropane L2, and their copperII complexes were carried out by spectroscopic and DFT methods. The DFT results show that conventional and nonconventional Hbonds present in L1and L2influence the NMR chemical shifts at different pH values, which thus suggests that the protonation sites at the pyridyl and tertiary nitrogen atoms of the ligands change the chemical environment of the adjacent carbon atoms; this observation is consistent with 13C NMR spectra recorded at different pH values. Furthermore, for their copper complexes, two possible geometrical isomers cisand trans are obtained; for example, cis[CuL1]2+, where both NCH3groups are oriented in the same plane, is in equilibrium with its transisomer and, as a result, a small energy difference 0.9 kcal mol–1 appears. In contrast, trans[CuL2]2+does not equilibrate with the cisisomer, because there is a greater energy difference ΔE= 3.9 kcal mol–1 between the two isomers. Indeed, when [CuL1]2+with two perchlorate ions was optimized, it was found that although only cis[CuL1]2+was able to accommodate a perchlorate ion in the axial position of the square pyramidal geometry by stabilizing the structure with two cisNCH3groups through Hbonds, the transisomer was unable to retain the perchlorate ion in the coordination sphere, because the NCH3groups were in the transposition; this disfavors the presence of the perchlorate ion in the sphere, because of the absence of Hbonds. 509. Interaction of Imidazoline Compounds with Fen(n1−4 Atoms) as a Model for Corrosion Inhibition: DFT and Electrochemical Studies

- Abstract
The corrosion inhibition properties of 2-methylimidazoline (MIMD) and N-methyl-2-methylimidazoline (MMIMD) were studied by density functional theory (DFT) and electrochemical methods. The interaction of imidazoline molecules with the iron atoms was studied by DFT as a model for a corrosion inhibition process. DFT results explain why the imidazoline moieties favor the perpendicular adsorption, while their protonated species adsorb in parallel position over the metal surface. The electrochemical results show that although both perform as good inhibitors, MMIMD is better than MIMD because the former contains a methyl substituent in the ring which facilitates a strong adsorption on the metal surface. Furthermore, the delocalization (N1C2N3) region of the compounds that are involved in the corrosion inhibition process was analyzed by theoretical calculation, showing that the higher occupied molecular orbitals of the compounds have adequate symmetry to interact with the lower unoccupied molecular orbital of the metal. This theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the electrochemical results that MMIMD has a greater effect on corrosion inhibition than MIMD, because the methyl group in the imidazoline ring considerably increases the formation of the inhibitor film over the metallic surface and as a result a low Gibbs free energy value was obtained for the MMIMD film.

- Abstract
In this work the effect of air plasmas on wettability of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was studied. These polymers are widely used materials in the fabrication of microfluidic devices. The microfluidic system fabricated from native PET and PDMS requires active pumping mechanism, due to a low hydrophilic surface behavior. To render hydrophilic and increase the capillary flow into the device, plasma treatments can be used. Air plasma treatment is an interesting technology for microfluidic fields due to simplicity of use and low cost. This study describes the effect of the working plasma pressure on wettability of polymers. The polymers were treated by RF plasma and the wettability was studied by means of sessile contact angle. The results established that the air plasma can increase the wettability of both polymers. Moreover we demonstrated that by optimizing the working pressure a superhydrophilic surface (with a contact angle less than 5°) can be obtained. The findings suggest that air plasma treatments are a suitable technology to enhance polymers surface wetting performance for microfluidic devices.

Survival of antigen-experienced T cells is essential for the generation of adaptive immune responses. Here, we show that the genetic and antibody-mediated inactivation of CD152 (cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4) in T helper (Th) effector cells reduced the frequency of nonapoptotic cells in a completely Fas/Fas ligand (FasL)–dependent manner. CD152 cross-linking together with stimulation of CD3 and CD28 on activated Th2 cells prevented activation-induced cell death (AICD) as a result of reduced Fas and FasL expression. Apoptosis protection conferred by CD152 correlated with the up-regulation of Bcl-2 and was mediated by phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase, which prevented FasL expression through the inhibitory phosphorylation of Forkhead transcription factor FKHRL1. We show that signals induced by CD152 act directly on activated T lymphocytes and, due to its differential surface expression on activated Th1 and Th2 cells, induce resistance to AICD mainly in Th2 cells.

We cloned a Tetrahymena thermophila gene, IFT52, encoding a homolog of the Chlamydomonas intraflagellar transport protein, IFT52. Disruption of IFT52 led to loss of cilia and incomplete cytokinesis, a phenotype indistinguishable from that of mutants lacking kinesin-II, a known ciliary assembly transporter. The cytokinesis failures seem to result from lack of cell movement rather than from direct involvement of ciliary assembly pathway components in cytokinesis. Spontaneous partial suppressors of the IFT52 null mutants occurred, which assembled cilia at high cell density and resorbed cilia at low cell density. The stimulating effect of high cell density on cilia formation is based on the creation of pericellular hypoxia. Thus, at least under certain conditions, ciliary assembly is affected by an extracellular signal and the Ift52p function may be integrated into signaling pathways that regulate ciliogenesis.

The medical management of male infertility has a precise role to play. Inappropriate use of drugs, apart from not promoting fertility, may actually predispose to infertility. Gonadotoxic or gametotoxic drugs should be avoided if possible. If potentially toxic drugs are used for a medical condition, suitable, less or non-toxic alternatives should be used. Where medical management is not possible, instead of wasting time and money on expensive unproven therapies, early recourse to assisted reproduction must be sought.

Background: Schizophrenia is a severe psychiatric condition that affects approximately 24 million people worldwide. The complex pathophysiology of schizophrenia presents various challenges for researchers and doctors. Therefore, it is crucial to curate robust pharmacotherapy for patients with schizophrenia to ease their symptoms. Establishing proper standards for patient care requires an ammunition of research studies done on the disease and its therapy, upon which health-care practitioners can rely for future patient care. Unfortunately, there is a void of adequate research studies done on understanding the prescription patterns of schizophrenia in India, especially in rural areas. To improve patient outcomes, there is a need for increased research on this particular subject. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the prescription pattern of antipsychotics in patients with schizophrenia at a tertiary care hospital in rural Karnataka. Setting and Design: This is an observational study carried out in MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital, Bengaluru, India. Materials and Methods: The study included a total of 139 inpatients, regardless of their age and sex, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia. The study was conducted for a period of 6 months, from February 2022 to July 2022. Data collection involved a case record form (CRF) designed for assessing treatment patterns. An investigator was assigned to the Department of Psychiatry, where patients with schizophrenia were discovered and after reviewing their medication chart, necessary data were filled into the CRF. The obtained data were then compiled and assessed. Results: Paranoid schizophrenia was the major subclass (90.0%). The prescription pattern showed that second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) were prescribed more than first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs), 112 (81.29%) and 41 (29.5%) prescriptions, respectively. In SGAs, tablet olanzapine received the most prescriptions which was 42 (30.22%). Tablet haloperidol was the major FGA to be prescribed receiving 18 prescriptions (12.95%). This study also included the assessment of combination drugs which showed that tablet risperidone + tablet trihexyphenidyl was the most prescribed combination drug 118 (78.43%). Conclusion: Our study showed that our findings aligned with several similar studies and also differed from a few, underscoring the need for further research and individualized treatment approaches to manage this complex psychiatric disorder.

An 18-year-old man presented with a large (12 × 10 cm) cystic mass involving the lower lobe and lingula of the left lung on computed tomography. Intraoperatively a large cystic mass was seen densely adherent to the left lung and the chest wall. A left pneumonectomy was performed because of the dense adhesions and extreme vascularity. Pathologic examination revealed a benign sugar cell tumor of the lung. We believe this is the first case report of such a large, clear cell tumor of the lung, mimicking malignant behavior in terms of vascularity and local invasion and requiring pneumonectomy. Abstract The present work deals with developing a method for revalorizing steel residues to create sunlight-active photocatalysts based on iron oxides. Commercial-grade steel leftovers are oxidized under different combinations of pH and temperature (50–90 °C and 3 ≥ pH ≤ 5) in a low energy-intensive setup. The material with the highest production efficiency (yield > 12%) and magnetic susceptibility (χm = 387 × 10−6 m3/kg) was further explored and modified by diffusion of M2+ (Zn and Co) ions within the structure of the oxide using a hydrothermal method to create ZnFe2O4, CoFe2O4 and combined Co–Zn ferrite. (Co–Zn)Fe2O4 displayed a bandgap of 2.02 eV and can be activated under sunlight irradiation. Electron microscopy studies show that (Co–Zn)Fe2O4 consists of particles with diameters between 400 and 700 nm, homogeneous size, even distribution, and good dispersibility. Application of the developed materials in the sunlight catalysis of black liquors from cellulose extraction resulted in a reduction of the Chemical Oxygen Demand (− 15% on average) and an enhancement in biodegradability (> 0.57 BOD/COD) after 180 min of reaction. Since the presented process employs direct solar light, it opens the possibility to large-scale water treatment and chemical upgrading applications.

Recent studies on the etiology and the cytogenetics of trophoblastic tumors suggest that hydatidiform mole and choriocarcinoma may be conditions with no causal relationship. With the advent of newer diagnostic methods which aid in the early diagnosis of pregnancy and help to differentiate it from abnormal pregnancy together with the increasing concern over the safety of use of the contraceptive measures following a hydatidiform mole, it is suggested that a period of postmolar contraception may no longer be necessary. The followup of these patients should include serial sonography in association with other currently available methods. Pregnancy should also be allowed to occur naturally if the patient so desires.

522. Mitotic chromosomal anomalies among 1210 infertile men.

- Abstract
Detailed medical and clinical examinations were carried out on 1608 men attending an infertility clinic to determine if any of those exhibiting abnormal semenograms also had any other readily identifiable clinical condition. In all, 1210 men showed abnormal semenograms according to World Health Organization criteria. Karyotyping of the white blood cells in these 1210 men revealed 44 (3.6%) individuals with either autosomal or sex chromosomal aberrations. However, no single characteristic feature of their semenogram or clinical condition was of any diagnostic value to predict the existence of a chromosomal anomaly.

523. Mucosal ouabain and Na+inhibit active Rb+(K+) absorption in normal and sodium-depleted rat distal colon

- Abstract
To determine the effect of mucosal sodium and mucosal ouabain on active Rb+(K+) absorption, unidirectional and net 86Rb+fluxes were measured under voltage-clamp conditions in the distal colon of normal and sodium-depleted rats. The role of mucosal sodium (independent of serosal sodium) was evaluated in a model of Rb+(K+) absorption in which serosal ouabain markedly enhanced active Rb+(K+) absorption. In normal rats, mucosal sodium was a competitive inhibitor of Rb+(K+) absorption, and Rb+(K+) absorption consisted of a mucosal sodium-sensitive component and a mucosal sodium-insensitive component. Further, mucosal ouabain almost completely inhibited the mucosal sodium-insensitive component but did not affect the mucosal sodium-sensitive component. In sodium-depleted rats, both mucosal sodium-sensitive and mucosal sodium-insensitive fractions of Rb+(K+) absorption were also identified. Aldosterone markedly stimulated the mucosal sodium-sensitive component (1.68 ± 0.15 vs. 0.60 ± 0.10 μEq · h−1· cm−2) but not the sodium-insensitive component (0.88 ± 0.09 vs. 0.64 ± 0.06 μEq · h−1· cm−2) component of Rb+(K+) absorption; however, in contrast to normal animals, mucosal sodium in sodium-depleted animals was a noncompetitive inhibitor of Rb+(K+) absorption. The mucosal sodium-insensitive component of Rb+(K+) absorption in sodium-depleted animals was substantially inhibited by mucosal ouabain, but the mucosal sodium-sensitive component, unlike that in normal animals, was partially inhibited by mucosal ouabain. These studies indicate that the characteristics of the Rb+(K+) absorptive process in sodium-depleted animals differ significantly from those present in normal animals, suggesting that aldosterone induces an Rb+(K+) absorptive mechanism not present in normal animals.

In this paper, a new analysis technique in the study of dynamical systems with periodically varying parameters is presented. The method is based on the fact that all linear periodic systems can be replaced by similar linear time-invariant systems through a suitable periodic transformation known as the Liapunov-Floquet (L-F) transformation. A general technique for the computation of the L-F transformation matrices is suggested. In this procedure, the state vector and the periodic matrix of the linear system equations are expanded in terms of the shifted Chebyshev polynomials over the principal period. Such an expansion reduces the original differential problem to a set of linear algebraic equations from which the state transition matrix (STM) can be constructed over the period in closed form. Application of Floquet theory and eigenanalysis to the resulting STM yields the L-F transformation matrix in a form suitable for algebraic manipulations. The utility of the L-F transformation in obtaining solutions of both linear and nonlinear dynamical systems with periodic coefficients is demonstrated. It is shown that the application of L-F transformation to free and harmonically forced linear periodic systems directly provides the conditions for internal and combination resonances and external resonances, respectively. The application of L-F transformation to quasilinear periodic systems provides a dynamically similar quasilinear systems whose linear parts are time-invariant and the solutions of such systems can be obtained through an application of the time dependent normal form theory. These solutions can be transformed back to the original coordinates using the inverse L-F transformation. Two dynamical systems, namely, a commutative system and a Mathieu type equation are considered to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. It is shown that the present technique is virtually free from the small parameter restriction unlike averaging and perturbation procedures and can be used even for those systems for which the generating solutions do not exist in the classical sense. The results obtained from the proposed technique are compared with those obtained via the perturbation method and numerical solutions computed using a Runge-Kutta type algorithm.

525. Klinefelter syndrome and its association with male infertility

- Abstract
Klinefelter's syndrome is the most common genetic disorder in which there is at least one extra X chromosome. Males normally have an X chromosome and a Y chromosome (XY). But males who have Klinefelter syndrome have an extra X chromosome (XXY), giving them a total of 47 instead of the normal 46 chromosomes. Sex chromosome abnormalities are more frequently associated with male infertility. The prevalence of XXYs has risen from 1.09 to 1.72 per 1 000 male births. A patient attended to fertility and genetic clinic, during the clinical diagnosis we found the following complaints of loss of secondary sexual characteristics and infertility. Physical examination revealed breast development, thin built, small size testes, and absence of beard and pubic hairs. Karyotype and biochemical analysis were performed to detect chromosomal abnormality as well as hormonal level to confirm the diagnosis of Klinefelter's syndrome. Chromosomal analysis of the peripheral blood lymphocytes demonstrated the constitutional karyotype of 47, XXY. Using karyotype the presence of extra X chromosome was confirmed, supporting the cytogenetic finding. The 47, XXY syndrome is relatively uncommon and can be missed clinically because of its variable clinical presentations. Accurate diagnosis of this constitutional karyotype provides a valuable aid in the counselling and early management of the patients who undertake fertility evaluation.

Seed dormancy and germination determines the ecological adaptation and sustainability of seed plants. Intensive research efforts have identified the role of several factors in seed dormancy and germination. The major factors are phytohormones, dormancy-specific genes, chromatin factors, developmental and/or structural components of seeds, and exogenous environmental cues, which have been well studied in model plants like Arabidopsis and rice. In general, Brassica napus L. (canola) cultivars and its interspecific hybrids show seed heterogeneity and varying degrees of dormancy, and germination potentials. However, detailed research on understanding the molecular mechanisms of seed dormancy and germination in B. napus is limited as compared to othe model crops like Arabidopsis. Identification of seed dormancy and germination associated QTLs in concert with environmental factors is essential for better management of seed longevity and vigor in economically important oil-seed crops like B. napus. In addition, both maternal and paternal genomes and/or their imprinted genes are often known to influence dormancy and subsequently lead to premature germination in some interspecific hybrids. Thus, in this review we provide an overview on plausible role of genetic, physiological, and environmental factors governing seed dormancy, germination and premature germination traits in B. napus.

Background Only scattered information is available on the tillage and nutrient management information for the sesame crop following rice in the literature. Sesame as an edible oil yielding crop with high levels of unsaturated fatty acids has high international demand due to superior health benefits. Being a small seeded crop, it requires standard tillage and nutrient management to obtain optimum productivity under rice fallow ecologies. As a sequential crop after rice harvest, the tillage and nutrient management practices followed for the preceding rice have astounding effects on the succeeding sesame crop. To better understand and manipulate the agro ecology in the rice fallow culture, it is necessary to study the behaviour of sesame cultivars, in relation to the tillage requirements and macro nutrient factors that have a bearing on the productivity. Methods The aim of this work was to evaluate the productivity of rice fallow sesame in the southern plateau and hills regions of the Indian sub-continent (Tamil Nadu) with a hypothesis that tillage and nutrient management would immensely benefit the sesame crop. Field experiments were conducted at TNAU, Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute, Aduturai, Tamil Nadu during 2019–2020 and 2020–2021 with tillage practices (reduced tillage, conventional tillage and zero tillage) and fertilizer doses (zero percent RDF, 25% RDF, 50% RDF, 75% RDF and 100% RDF) in a split plot design replicated thrice. Results The results have clearly indicated that the performance of rice fallow sesame was poor under zero till conditions as the sesame crop is poorly adapted leading to a yield penalty up to 68%. A total of 75% RDF has yielded statistically similar yield to that of 100% RDF to the rice fallow sesame. Further, neither the oil content nor the fatty acid composition was modified by tillage and nutrient management regimes.

Densities (ρ) and speeds of sound (u) were measured over the entire mole fraction range for the binary mixtures of aniline with butyl acetate (BA), iso-butyl acetate (IBA), tert-butyl acetate (TBA) and butyl acrylate (BAc) at T = (303.15-318.15) K. These data were used to compute excess molar volume (VmE), excess isentropic compressibility (κSE) and excess speed of sound (uE) for investigating the different types of intermolecular interactions present in the mixtures. These parameters have been correlated with Redlich-Kister equation. Further, the uand VmEvalues have been analyzed with different theoretical models. The molecular structure and polarity of the ester molecule along with the nature and bulkiness of its alkyl group found to affect the magnitude of investigated excess thermodynamic properties of the binary systems. FTIR spectral analysis of these mixtures was used to understand the interactions between component molecules and to correlate them with the thermodynamic findings.

- Abstract
Given that mining is considered to be an essential activity for Mexico's industrial development, cyanide has been increasingly used to recover precious metals such as gold and silver. Along with that arises the need to develop new technologies to treat the wastes (mining tailings). In addition to their high cyanide content, metal and other contaminants that are found in tailings also present a problem. As a result, conventional (physicochemical) strategies have been developed to reduce contamination from tailings, nonetheless, these have high operating costs and generate unwanted by-products. For this reason, studies have begun to focus on non-conventional strategies to treat free cyanide and cyanide complexes such as fungi, bacterial consortia, and pure bacteria. These are important because of the mechanisms involved in degrading or modifying contaminants at neutral to high pH levels, which convert contaminants into non-hazardous products. The ability of microorganisms to grow at an alkaline pH prevents HCN volatilization. These studies have been performed at the laboratory level using two types of microbial binding: suspended biomass and immobilized biomass. They have used both natural (granite rock, citrus peels, cellulose, gravel) and synthetic (stainless steel, geotextiles, alginate, plastics) packing material, as well as reactors with different types of flow, namely, batch and continuous.

Wireless ad hoc networks are highly used in the current network environment in spite of its effectiveness, reliable, minimum cost utilization, and non‐static infrastructure. To achieve the Quality of Service (QoS) in the wireless ad hoc network, resources in the network should be used properly. Here the QoS to be ensured is edge to edge latency, uneasiness, and packet loss. During information passing in a multi‐hop edge to edge interaction, the nodes in between the sender and receiver may intrude or monitor or listen to the information without the consent of the sender and receiver. To overcome these disadvantages, an assured and flexible information transmission should take place between the sender and receiver. In this regard, an optimal model called CQASS has been proposed to attain better performance by assuring the edge to edge interaction in wireless ad hoc networks. The edge to edge interaction is assured and protected by authentication. An optimistic connection identity from the pool of delivery connection is used to maintain the QoS. Flexible symmetric encryption using the secret key is implemented for node communication. The proposed model CQASS will not allow any malevolent nodes to interact with the legal in between nodes for the information transmission even the proposed will not allow the malevolent nodes to enter the legal path between the sender and receiver. The proposed model results are compared with the existing systems and the proposed model increases the performance of the network through resulting in reduced packet lose, handling of uneasiness and minimizes the latency in edge to edge communication. Optimal key generation, better ciphering, minimized pricing, and effective storage and interaction are other features of the proposed model. 535. Particulate nanocomposites based on bismaleimide–graphene oxide: Thermal studies

- Abstract
The structurally different bismaleimides (BMIs) such as 4,4’-bismaleimidodiphenyl ether (BMIE), 4,4’-bismaleimidodiphenyl sulphone (BMIS) and 4,4’-bismaleimidodiphenyl methane (BMIM) were synthesized. The materials graphite (G), graphene oxide (GO) and washed graphene oxide (WGO) particles are separately blended (3% w/w) with BMIs and thermally polymerized under appropriate conditions. The effects of the presence of the nanoparticles in BMIs were investigated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). The DSC results show that the blended nanoparticles alter both the cure exotherm and the enthalpy of curing of the BMIs. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was employed to understand the thermal stability of the cured pure BMIs and their blends with nanoparticles. The presence of the nanoparticles in the crosslinked BMIE matrix shifts the onset of the thermal degradation temperature to higher temperature region (around 15 °C). Among all the materials investigated, the nanoparticles incorporated BMIS increases the char residue. This is due to the efficiency of the physical dispersion and the possible chemical interactions shown by nanoparticles in the cured bismaleimides. The SEM results reveal that the debris of GO are removed by the base washing of GO and the incorporated nanoparticles are well dispersed in the cured BMIM.

An easy, efficient and highly reproducible regeneration system was established through organogenesis from leaf base mediated callus of an ethnobotanical hairy shrub Abutilon indicum L. sweet, which is documented to possess pharmaceutically important phytochemicals. Among various explants, leaf bases produced significant callus induction (89%) with 140 mg fresh weight on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 11.31 μM 2, 4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2, 4-D). Combinations of 2, 4-D and kinetin (KIN) increased the biomass (191 mg) of embryogenic calli. Regeneration medium with a combination of 8.88 μM of 6-amino benzyl purine (BAP) and 8.06 μM of naphthalene acetic acid in MS basal media significantly influenced the initiation of shoot primordium with 91% of regeneration. Proficiently regenerated shoot apical meristems (SAMs) produced higher frequency of multiple shoot induction on 4.10 μM of zeatin. The fully regenerated mature shootlets produced high root biomass (791.67 ± 48.05 mg) on half - strength MS with 4.54 μM indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) with an excellent mat root system for efficient acclimatization. In vitro established plantlets were successfully acclimatized under ex vitro conditions with high frequency. Presence of homologous DNA banding pattern with Single Primer Amplification Reaction markers confirmed the genetic similarity. FTIR and GC-MS spectrum showed similar metabolic profiles between wild and in vitro regenerated plantlets. Thus the protocol is reliable for in vitro regeneration through leaf base derived callus which could pave a way to the large scale production of secondary metabolite through biotechnological approaches. • Synergistic effect of 2, 4-D and KIN showed a greater mass of friable and embryogenic callus proliferation (190.82 mg) derived from leaf base. • 91% of regeneration with an average number of 8 SAMs were observed. • For the first time, genetic fidelity analysis has been with DAMD and ISSR markers. • GCMS and FTIR analysis used to compare the retention time and the spectrum pattern of WT and TC. Abstract The disposal of magnesite mine tailings (MMT), a by-product of magnesite mining, raises significant environmental concerns due to its adverse effects on soil, water and air quality. Likewise, the improper disposal of used face masks exacerbates environmental burdens. The innovative use of polypropylene fibres (PPF) derived from disposable face masks to reinforce. This study explores the compaction and strength characteristics of PPF-MMT composites with varying fibre content to develop a sustainable composite for subgrade construction. The findings indicate that the addition of PPF increases optimal moisture content and decreases maximum dry density. Shear strength analysis reveals a linear failure envelope for both MMT and PPF-MMT, with initial angle of internal friction improvement at lower PPF content (0.25% and 0.5%) but a decline at higher contents (0.75% and 1%). Importantly, PPF-MMT consistently exhibits a unique strain-hardening behaviour across all stress levels, distinguishing it from MMT, which only transitions to strain-hardening at higher stresses. Under vertical load, MMT shows contraction, while the PPF-MMT composite initially contracts but later dilates due to increased fibre-MMT interaction during horizontal displacement. Furthermore, California bearing ratio (CBR) tests demonstrate increased dry CBR with PPF, reaching a peak of 33.85% at 0.5% fibre content. The soaked CBR tests affirm the remarkable durability of PPF-MMT, maintaining significantly higher values than MMT even after 60 days of soaking. The study concludes that 0.5% fibre content as optimum dosage.

This study explores optical and acoustic emission signals during LPBF processes with multiple materials, addressing challenges in process control and ensuring accurate material composition. Experimental data from processing five powder compositions were collected using a custom-built monitoring system in a commercial LPBF machine. The research categorised signals from LPBF processing various compositions, enhancing prediction accuracy by combining optical with acoustic data and training convolutional neural networks using contrastive learning. Latent spaces of trained models using two contrastive loss functions, clustered acoustic and optical emissions based on similarities, aligning with five compositions. Contrastive learning and sensor fusion were found to be essential for monitoring LPBF processes involving multiple materials. This research advances the understanding of multi-material LPBF, highlighting sensor fusion strategies’ potential for improving quality control in additive manufacturing.

Cancer incidence and progression dramatically increase with chronic infections including HIV infection. Thus, studies on pro-tumorigenic effects of microbial stimulants from resident microbiota and infections in the context of inflammation are needed and underway. Here, we discuss chronic infections and potential neuro-immune interactions that could establish immunomodulatory programs permissive for tumor growth and progression.

The application of network pharmacology (NP) has advanced our understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms underlying diseases, including neck, head, and oral cancers, as well as thyroid carcinoma. This review aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of natural network pharmacology using compounds and traditional Chinese medicines for combating these malignancies. NP serves as a pivotal tool that provides a comprehensive view of the interactions among compounds, genes, and diseases, thereby contributing to the advancement of disease treatment and management. In parallel, this review discusses the significance of publicly accessible databases in the identification of oral, head, and neck cancer-specific genes. These databases, including those for head and neck oral cancer, head and neck cancer, oral cancer, and genomic variants of oral cancer, offer valuable insights into the genes, miRNAs, drugs, and genetic variations associated with these cancers. They serve as indispensable resources for researchers, clinicians, and drug developers, contributing to the pursuit of precision medicine and improved treatment of these challenging malignancies. In summary, advancements in NP could improve the globalization and modernization of traditional medicines and prognostic targets as well as aid in the development of innovative drugs. Furthermore, this review will be an eye-opener for researchers working on drug development from traditional medicines by applying NP approaches.

Dental caries is a common human oral disease worldwide, caused by an acid-producing bacteria Streptococcus mutans. The use of synthetic drugs and antibiotics to prevent dental caries has been increasing, but this can lead to severe side effects. To solve this issue, developing and developed countries have resorted to herbal medicines as an alternative to synthetic drugs for the treatment and prevention of dental caries. Therefore, there is an urgent need for plant-derived products to treat such diseases. Bacopa monnieri, a well-documented medicinal plant, contains 52 phytocompounds, including the pentacyclic triterpenoid metabolite known as asiatic acid (ASTA). Hence, this study aimed to demonstrate, for the first time, the antibacterial activity of phytocompound ASTA against S. mutans. The findings revealed that ASTA significantly inhibited the growth of S. mutans and the production of virulence factors such as acidurity, acidogenicity, and eDNA synthesis. Molecular docking analysis evaluated the potential activity of ASTA against S. mutans virulence genes, including VicR and GtfC. Furthermore, toxicity assessment of ASTA in human buccal epithelial cells was performed, and no morphological changes were observed. An in vivo analysis using Danio rerio (zebrafish) confirmed that the ASTA treatment significantly increased the survival rates of infected fish by hindering the intestinal colonization of S. mutans. Furthermore, the disease protection potential of ASTA against the pathognomonic symptom of S. mutans infection was proven by the histopathological examination of the gills, gut, and kidney. Overall, these findings suggest that ASTA may be a promising therapeutic and alternative drug for the treatment and prevention of oral infection imposed by S. mutans.

Metal additive manufacturing is a recent breakthrough technology that promises automated production of complex geometric shapes at low operating costs. However, its potential is not yet fully exploited due to the low reproducibility of quality in mass production. The monitoring of parts quality directly during manufacturing promises to solve this problem, while machine learning showed efficient performance correlating versatile manufacturing measurements with different quality grades. Today, most monitoring algorithms are based on semi- or supervised learning, thus, requiring a collection and ground-truth validation of training sets. This is costly and time consuming in real-life conditions. Our work is a feasibility study of the application of unsupervised machine learning to monitor different manufacturing regimes and quality in metal additive manufacturing. The algorithm combines the kernel Bayes rule for inference and Bayesian adaptive resonance for structuring the incoming data. Airborne acoustic emission from laser powder bed fusion is used as an algorithm input. The recognition of the main manufacturing regimes (conduction mode, stable, and unstable keyholes) are shown on real-life data, while the self-learning accuracy of developed algorithm exceeds 88 %. Our approach promises future development of plug-and-play quality monitoring systems for laser processing technology, requiring minimum modifications of the existing machines, reducing time/cost for algorithm preparation and providing continuous data driven adaptation of the algorithm to changes in manufacturing conditions.

Abstract This study employed subtractive proteomics and immunoinformatics to analyze the Wuchereria bancrofti proteome and identify potential therapeutic targets, with a focus on designing a vaccine against the parasite species. A comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of the parasite's proteome identified 51 probable therapeutic targets, among which "Kunitz/bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor domain-containing protein" was identified as the most promising vaccine candidate. The candidate protein was used to design a multi-epitope vaccine, incorporating B-cell and T-cell epitopes identified through various tools. The vaccine construct underwent extensive analysis of its antigenic, physical, and chemical features, including the determination of secondary and tertiary structures. Docking and molecular dynamics simulations were performed with HLA alleles, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and TLR3 to assess its potential to elicit the human immune response. Immune simulation analysis confirmed the predicted vaccine’s strong binding affinity with immunoglobulins, indicating its potential efficacy in generating an immune response. However, experimental validation and testing of this multi-epitope vaccine construct would be needed to assess its potential against W. bancrofti and even for a broader range of lymphatic filarial infections given the similarities between W. bancrofti and Brugia.

Abstract Background This case report elucidates the exceptional rarity and intricacies surrounding mycotic pseudoaneurysms in the ascending aorta, specifically post-pediatric cardiac surgery. Case presentation The case report presents a distinctive case of a 7-year-old female developing complications 10 days after atrial septal defect repair, characterized by sternal wound infection attributed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Imaging revealed a substantial pseudoaneurysm, necessitating a meticulous surgical strategy involving femoral cannulation, redo sternotomy, and adept management of intraoperative challenges, such as a fragile sternum and dense adhesions. The successful postoperative course, marked by weaning and comprehensive management, contributes significant insights into the evolving landscape of mycotic pseudoaneurysms in pediatric populations. The discussion delves into the historical context, mechanisms, and causative organisms, emphasizing the heightened vigilance required in the postoperative care of this vulnerable demographic. Conclusion This report enhances our understanding of pediatric cases, underscoring the imperative for increased awareness and strategic management in addressing post-cardiac surgery complications.

Densities (ρ) and speeds of sound (u) were measured for the binary mixtures of monoethanolamine (MEA) with 2-methoxyethanol (ME), 2-ethoxyethanol (EE), 2-propoxyethanol (PE) and 2-butoxyethanol (BE) mixtures at temperatures 303.15, 308.15, 313.15 and 318.15 K over the entire composition range. These data were used to compute the isentropic compressibility (κS), excess molar volume (VmE) and excess isentropic compressibility (κSE). The values of VmEwere analyzed using Prigogine-Flory-Patterson (PFP) theory. The excess functions were fitted and correlated with Redlich–Kister and Hwang equations. The measured data were discussed in terms of intermolecular interactions between component molecules. The experimental speeds of sound data in the present investigated mixtures were compared with various theoretical models like collision factor theory (CFT) and free length theory (FLT) to check their relative merits of pure component properties. Moreover, the experimental excess functions were correlated in terms of FTIR spectral analysis.
