Background: Thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD) is a devastating but treatable disease if detected early. The clinical manifestations and genetic characteristics underlying TAAD patients in Taiwan, however, remain unclear. Methods: We consecutively recruited patients referred for TAAD screening and/or management at a tertiary medical center in Taiwan. All patients received a comprehensive survey of the clinical manifestations and a genetic testing with a 29-gene next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel. Results: Patients (n = 107) were referred for different reasons, and could be grouped into 4 categories: known aortic aneurysm or dissection (AoAD) (n = 57), Marfanoid features (n = 36), having family members of suspected AoAD (n = 11), and ectopic lens (n = 3). AoAD were confirmed in 73 (68.2%) of the entire cohort. Among all the clinical manifestations, skin striae distensae was the only physical sign that showed significant association with AoAD (p = 0.007 after adjusted). Disease-causing genes/variants were identified in 46 patients (43.0%); FBN1 was the most prevalent disease-causing gene, followed by TGFBR1, TGFBR2 and FBN2. A positive genetic testing was not only an independent predictor of AoAD (hazard ratio (HR) 3.468, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.541–7.807], p = 0.003), but also had a higher chance of dissection among the patients with known dilated aorta (HR 4.552, 95% CI [1.578–13.135], p = 0.005). Conclusion: The presence of skin striae distensae may serve as a clinical cue for physicians to search for AoAD in subjects who are at risk. The NGS panel test not only helps confirm the diagnosis, but also stratify the risk of dissection among patients with dilated aorta.

BackgroundAlthough the overall global incidence of gastric cancer has been declining, the number of new cases in people under the age of 50 is increasing, which is related to metastasis, late pathological stages, and poor prognosis. There is a scarcity of large-scale studies to evaluate and predict distant metastasis in patients with early-onset gastric cancer.MethodsFrom January 2010 to December 2019, data on early-onset GC patients undergoing surgery were gathered from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. We investigated the independent risk factors for distant metastasis in patients with early-onset gastric cancer. Based on these risk factors, we developed a nomogram to predict distant metastasis. The model underwent internal validation on the test set and external validation on 205 patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and the seventh Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. The novel nomogram model was then evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration, the area under the curve (AUC), and decision curve analysis (DCA). The training set nomogram score was used to classify the different risk clusters of distant metastasis.ResultsOur study enrolled 2217 patients after establishing the inclusion and exclusion criteria, with 1873 having no distant metastasis and 344 having distant metastasis. The tumor size, total lymph nodes, whether or not receiving radiotherapy and chemotherapy, T stage, and N stage were significant predictors of advanced distant metastasis (p < 0.05). The AUC of the ROC analysis demonstrated our model’s high accuracy. Simultaneously, the prediction model shows high stability and clinical practicability in the calibration curve and DCA analysis.ConclusionsWe developed an innovative nomogram containing clinical and pathological characteristics to predict distant metastasis in patients younger than 50 years old with gastric cancer. The tool can alert clinicians about distant metastasis and help them develop more effective clinical treatment plans.

It is extremely challenging to apply an Inertial Navigation System (INS) to a gun-launched rolling projectile effectively. Overcoming the negative effects produced by high angular rolling and overloading requires innovative solutions. This paper introduces a unique inertial system that differs from a traditional gimballed INS and a strapdown INS. A Partial Strapdown Platform (PSP) was developed based on the principle of a pendulum to mitigate the adverse effects of projectile rolling motion. The anti-overloading performance of the PSP was improved by using a pair of specially designed alloy steel head-on hemispheres. Force condition analysis was conducted on the projectile and the PSP’s inner cylinder to establish the mechanical dynamic model. Computer simulations and turntable experiments were performed to verify the stabilization function of the PSP. The pitch angle was determined to be associated with the stability of the PSP based on simulations and experiments. Gun firing tests were performed to verify the overload-burdening and stabilization functions of the PSP.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of alternating red (660 nm) and blue (460 nm) light on the growth and nutritional quality of two-leaf-color pak choi (Brassica campestris L. ssp. chinensis var. communis). Four light treatments (supplemental alternating red and blue light with intervals of 0, 1, 2, and 4 hours, with a monochromatic light intensity of 100 μmol·m−2·s−1 and a cumulative lighting time of 16 hours per day) were conducted in a greenhouse under identical ambient light conditions (90 to 120 μmol·m−2·s−1 at 12:00 am) for 10 days before green- and red-leaf pak choi were harvested. The results showed that the two-leaf-color pak choi receiving alternating red and blue light exhibited more compact canopies and wider leaves than those under the control treatment, which was attributed to the shade avoidance syndrome of plants. The present study indicated that the biomass of green-leaf pak choi was much higher than that of red-leaf pak choi, but the nutritional quality of green-leaf pak choi was lower than that of red-leaf pak choi, and seemingly indicating that the regulation of metabolism for pak choi was species specific under light exposure. The trends of both biomass and the soluble sugar content were highest under the 1-hour treatment. The contents of chlorophyll a and total chlorophyll in both cultivars (green- and red-leaf pak choi) were significantly increased compared with control, without significant differences among the 1-, 2-, and 4-hour treatments, whereas chlorophyll b exhibited no significant difference in any treatment. Alternating red- and blue-light treatment significantly affected the carotenoid content, but different trends in green- and red-leaf pak choi were observed, with the highest contents being detected under the 1-hour and 4-hour treatments, respectively. With increasing time intervals, the highest soluble protein contents in two-leaf-color pak choi were observed in the 4-hour treatment, whereas nitrate contents were significantly decreased in the 4-hour treatment. Compared with 0 hours, the contents of vitamin C, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins in two-leaf-color pak choi were significantly increased, but no significant differences were observed in vitamin C, phenolic compounds, and flavonoids among the 1-, 2-, and 4-hour treatments, similar to what was found for the anthocyanin content of green-leaf pak choi. However, the content of anthocyanins in red-leaf pak choi gradually increased with increasing time intervals, with the highest content being found in the 4-hour treatment. Supplemental alternating red and blue light slightly increased the antioxidant capacity [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging rate and antioxidant power], but no significant differences were observed after 1, 2, and 4 hours of treatment. Taken together, treatment with an interval of 1 hour was the most effective for increasing the biomass of pak choi in this study, but treatment with a 4-hour interval should be considered to enhance the accumulation of health-promoting compounds.

Abstract Background Obesity has become the main health issue in developed countries as it impacts life expectancy and increases mortality of cerebrovascular or cardiovascular diseases. The leptin is one of the adipokines which presents in the serum in proportion to the amount of adipose tissue and is translated from LEP gene. It involves in energy homeostasis, lipid and glucose metabolisms, modulation of immune systems, and thermogenesis. Many previous studies have revealed controversial results between LEP polymorphisms and leptin levels in different ages and ethnicities. Herein, we investigated the impacts of LEP polymorphism against leptin levels in Taiwanese subjects. Methods In 599 Taiwanese subjects, excluding clinically overt systemic disease, age below 18 years old, and C‐reactive protein (CRP) level of above 10 mg/L, few of LEP polymorphisms were genotyped with TaqMan SNP genotyping assays, were further analyzed for association with leptin level in univariate and multivariate linear regression analyses with Bonferroni correction for multiple tests in stratified groups. The univariate and stepwise multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to determine the coefficient of determinant of LEP polymorphisms over leptin level. Results Significant associations were found between LEP polymorphisms and leptin levels in obese women. Circulating leptin level was positively correlated with inflammatory, insulin resistance markers, and visceral obesity markers in all subjects. Furthermore, stratified and interaction analyses revealed that LEP polymorphisms, rs7799039 and rs2167270, were significantly associated with leptin levels in obese women—8%–10% of which could be explained by LEP polymorphisms. Conclusion The LEP polymorphisms are independently associated with leptin levels in Taiwanese obese women. Further, the genetic determinants for leptin levels may be different between obese and nonobese, and in different sex individuals. The obesity status and female sex may exert modification effect on transcription of LEP, particularly in obese women.

The taxonomical position of species of the genus Tamarix (Tamaricaceae) has been criticized because of their gross morphological similarities (such as slender, smooth and reddish–brown branches, grey–green foliage and scale leaves), and their systematic relationships remain unclear. In this paper, the leaf epidermal features of 17 species from China are studied based on the micro-morphological characters of the epidermal cells, stomata, salt glands, papillae and epidermal hairs. According to the studies, the leaf epidermal features, together with the character of the flower, are taxonomically clearly distinct. The establishment of Tamarix albiflonum is consolidated. Tamarix korolkowi and Tamarix ramosissima have minimal differences in epidermal characters, and the former is suggested to be a junior synonym. Tamarix ramosissima, Tamarix tarimensis, Tamarix arceuthoides and Tamarix hohenackeri are most similar with respect to their leaf epidermis; considering the common morphological features, habit, distribution and especially the hybridization, it is suggested that these four species are closely genetically related and that the variations among them are probably intraspecific. The new taxonomical evidence indicates the occurrence of 13 species and four variants in China. Presently, Tamarix is a typical plant of arid and semi-arid regions, but its Eocene ancestors lived in warm and humid climates in the coastal areas of the ancient Mediterranean Sea. Thus, the papillae or epidermal hairs, which are outgrowths of the outer epidermal cells facilitating the leaf to respond to water stress and commonly seen in the plants growing in arid or semi-arid areas rather than the plants in warm and humid climates, are of relatively recent origin in Tamarix. The primitive species lack papillae or epidermal hairs, while in evolved species these structures are abundant. Based on the ecological adaptations of the epidermal features, the palaeogeographic implications of Tamarix in the Late Cenozoic of Northwest China are also discussed. Topics discussed include prefrontal GABAergic interneurons (INs) are crucial for social behavior by maintaining excitation/inhibition balance; and results reveal a functional differentiation among IN subtypes and suggest the importance of low gamma rhythms in social interaction behavior.

Dysfunction of the noradrenergic (NE) neurons is implicated in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder (BPD). ErbB4 is highly expressed in NE neurons, and its genetic variation has been linked to BPD; however, how ErbB4 regulates NE neuronal function and contributes to BPD pathogenesis is unclear. Here we find that conditional deletion of ErbB4 in locus coeruleus (LC) NE neurons increases neuronal spontaneous firing through NMDA receptor hyperfunction, and elevates catecholamines in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Furthermore, Erbb4-deficient mice present mania-like behaviors, including hyperactivity, reduced anxiety and depression, and increased sucrose preference. These behaviors are completely rescued by the anti-manic drug lithium or antagonists of catecholaminergic receptors. Our study demonstrates the critical role of ErbB4 signaling in regulating LC-NE neuronal function, reinforcing the view that dysfunction of the NE system may contribute to the pathogenesis of mania-associated disorder.

In telomerase negative yeast cells, Rad52-dependent recombination is activated to maintain telomeres. This recombination-mediated telomere elongation usually involves two independent pathways, type I and type II, and leads to generation of type I and type II survivors. It remains elusive whether the recombination-mediated telomere elongation prefers to take place on shorter or longer telomeres. In this study, we exploited the de novo telomere addition system to examine the telomere recombination event in telomerase negative cells. We show that recombination preferentially occurs on shorter rather than longer telomeres in both pre-survivors and established type II survivors. In type II survivors, the short VII-L telomeres could invade either terminal TG1-3 sequence or short tracts of TG1-3 sequence in subtelomeric Y'-X and Y'-Y' junction to initiate recombination. Unexpectedly, short VII-L telomere recombination still takes place in type II survivors lacking either Rad50 or Rad59, which are required for type II survivor generation in senescing telomerase-null cells. Our results support the notion that Rad50 and Rad59 are not essential for the maintenance of type II survivors once established.

Diaspore characteristics of 22 families, including 102 genera and 150 species (55 represented by seeds and 95 by fruits) from the Gurbantunggut Desert were analyzed for diaspore biological characteristics (mass, shape, color, and appendage type). The diaspore mass and shape were significantly different in phylogeny group (APG) and dispersal syndromes; vegetative periods significantly affected diaspore mass, but not diaspore shape; and ecotypes did not significantly affect diaspore mass and shape, but xerophyte species had larger diaspore mass than mesophyte species. Unique stepwise ANOVA results showed that variance in diaspore mass and shape among these 150 species was largely dependent upon phylogeny and dispersal syndromes. Therefore, it was suggested that phylogeny may constrain diaspore mass, and as dispersal syndromes may be related to phylogeny, they also constrained diaspore mass and shape. Diaspores of 85 species (56.67%) had appendages, including 26 with wings/bracts, 18 with pappus/hair, 14 with hooks/spines, 10 with awns, and 17 with other types of appendages. Different traits (mass, shape, color, appendage, and dispersal syndromes) of diaspore decided plants forming different adapted strategies in the desert. In summary, the diaspore characteristics were closely related with phylogeny, vegetative periods, dispersal syndromes, and ecotype, and these characteristics allowed the plants to adapt to extreme desert environments.

Abstract Background Advances in techniques have left very few indications for open surgical extraction of urinary stones currently. These advances notwithstanding, the search continues for medical approaches to urinary stone management. In this study, we perform an in vitro study analyzing the efficiency and prospect of two new complex solutions in urological calcium phosphate calculi dissolution. Methods Eighteen stones composed mainly of calcium phosphates were taken from patients who underwent kidney stone surgery. These stones were large enough (weight range 0.514–0.928 g) to be fragmented and matched equally into six groups. Chemolysis of phosphate stones was done with six different solvents and was repeated 3 times with 6 stones for each solution. At 24, 48 and 72 h, reduction in weight, percentage weight change, and dissolution rate; the dissolution rates at pH 5.0, 7.0 and 8.5 for each solution, using different cations (Na+, K+ or Ca2+), according to different dilutions (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4) of S1 and S2 were simultaneously determined. Results Calcium phosphate calculi were poorly dissolved by Phys and Art, and they had a low dissolution rate in pH 8.5 EDTA. The most effective solutions were S1, S2 and R, with 72 h mean dissolution rates: 5.75 ± 0.44 mg/hr (S1), 5.2 ± 0.63 mg/hr (S2), 4.55 ± 0.46 mg/hr (R) ( ± s, p < 0.01 R, S1 and S2 vs Phys, Art and EDTA; p < 0.05, S1 vs R, LSD-test). The mean percentage weight loss at 72 h was: 52.1 ± 15.75 % (S1), 44.4 ± 7.37 % (S2) and 40.5 ± 3.67 % (R) ( ± s, p < 0.01 R, S1 and S2 vs Phys, Art and EDTA, LSD-test). Diluted twice, S1 and S2 had even better effectiveness than their initial solution. The additive of Na+, K+ or Ca2+ greatly reduced the dissolution rates of S1, S2. Conclusion Our data indicate that test solutions S1 and S2 are effective solvents in the chemolysis of calcium phosphate stones. At twice dilutions, these solutions are even more useful in the treatment of stone disease.

The article focuses on the synthesis and chemical structure of 3-Methyl-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl 2,4-dichloro-benzoate or C17H12Cl2N2O2. The dihedral angle between the two benzene rings is 69.4±. The compound possesses herbicidal, growth-regulating and anti-inflammatory activities. The molecular structure reveals that the dihedral angle formed between the dichlorobenzene and pyrazolyl rings is 38.3± and that between phenyl and pyrazolyl rings is 46.8±.

Objective: To assess the value of monitoring serum human chorionic gonadotropin beta-subunit (beta-HCG) level changes in early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy., Methods: Totalling 106 cases of ectopic pregnancy and 69 cases of threatened abortion were included in the study. Blood samples were collected to examine beta-HCG levels, which was repeated 2-3 days later., Results: Initial serum beta-HCG levels of the women with ectopic pregnancy and different were significantly lower than those in women with threatened abortion (P<0.05), and the increment rate of serum beta-HCG in the former was also significantly lower (P<0.05)., Conclusion: Compared with single-time serum beta-HCG detection, dynamic monitoring of serum beta-HCG provides more important and reliable evidence for early diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy. Transvaginal ultrasonography and in should also be considered in the clinical analysis.
