The hydrology of the Sahel is characterised by the degradation of the drainage network that induces a lack of large watersheds. In the Niamey degree, different studies have shown the importance of pools in the hydrology of the region. It was shown that different processes such as evaporation or deep infiltration depend on the level of filling of the pools. During the last years, several observations have shown different evolutions of these pools in the Niamey degree. Our objectives in this paper are to identify the pools and their evolution. Our approach is based on high resolution optical remote sensing data, SPOT/HRV (20m) and SPOT5 (10m) images. This study uses a large data base of optical images (5 images in 1992, 1 image in 1994, 1 image in 1996 and 2 images in 2003). The identification approach is based on the NDVI coefficient calculated from Near Infrared and Red channels for each SPOT image. It is observed that the pools present the lowest values of NDVI in the studied optical images. The distribution of NDVI for pools is estimated for the different images, then a threshold is chosen to separate pools from the other types of land use. First, we observe the evolution of pool surface and their number in the monsoon period from June to November in 1992. It is clearly shown that the maximum of pool surface corresponds to August 1992. This result is well correlated with rainfall statistics. Second, the estimation of pool surface and number from 1992 to 2003 shows an increase of the pools, particularly in the tiger bush. This behaviour could be explained particularly by the increase of the surface runoff in the region.

This paper presents an original methodology to retrieve surface soil moisture based on the use of the ENVISAT-ASAR multi-incidence angle sensor. Previous studies using ERS and RADARSAT SAR have shown the potential of radar signals to monitor surface soil moisture with one incidence-angle data and a simple linear relationship. This work aims at developing this linear approach to estimate mean soil surface moisture of a small watershed using ASAR multi-incidence angle data. A method of normalisation of all radar data acquired at different incidence angles is first described. Secondly, the effects of roughness and soil texture on the linear relationship between moisture and radar signals are discussed. Finally, the proposed methodology to reduce these effects is developed. The validation of our approach is based on eight experimental campaigns with different ASAR incidence angles, and different surface moisture conditions. The processed radar signal shows a linear relationship with the mean measured soil surface moisture, with very high correlation (R 2 =0.97) and a slope of 0.28. These results illustrate the high potential of the developed approach and ENVISAT

The objective of this investigation is to analyze the sensitivity of ASAR (Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar) data to soil surface parameters (surface roughness and soil moisture) over bare fields, at various polarizations (HH, HV, and VV) and incidence angles (20°–43°). The relationships between backscattering coefficients and soil parameters were examined by means of 16 ASAR images and several field campaigns. We have found that HH and HV polarizations are more sensitive than VV polarization to surface roughness. The results also show that the radar signal is more sensitive to surface roughness at high incidence angle (43°). However, the dynamics of the radar signal as a function of soil roughness are weak for root mean square (rms) surface heights between 0.5 cm and 3.56 cm (only 3 dB for HH polarization and 43° incidence angle). The estimation of soil moisture is optimal at low and medium incidence angles (20°–37°). The backscattering coefficient is more sensitive to volumetric soil moisture in HH polarization than in HV polarization. In fact, the results show that the depolarization ratio σHH0/σHV0 is weakly dependent on the roughness condition, whatever the radar incidence. On the other hand, we observe a linear relationship between the ratio σHH0/σHV0 and the soil moisture. The backscattering coefficient ratio between a low and a high incidence angle decreases with the rms surface height, and minimizes the effect of the soil moisture.

This paper discusses the potential of radar signal to characterise the bare surface roughness in arid or semi-arid regions. The used microwave sensor is the SAR of ERS. Ground truth measurements were acquired over different arid sites in the South of Tunisia. An empirical approach is proposed to derive the surface roughness from SAR measurements. The relationships with two different kinds of roughness have been studied: the geometric roughness, which is characterised by a rather new parameter called Zs, and the classical aerodynamic roughness Z/sub 0/.

This paper discusses the potential of radar signal to characterise the bare surface roughness in arid or semi-arid regions.Two different scales have been considered with two microwave sensors: high resolution ERS/SAR and low resolutionERS Wind Scatterometer instruments. Ground truth measurements were acquired over different arid sites in the South ofTunisia. An empirical approach is proposed to derive the surface roughness from SAR measurements. In this approach,the surface roughness is characterised by a parameter called Zs.Then, a good correlation between SAR and WSC data is demonstrated. Using these two sensors, we are able to derivethe backscattering signal versus incidence angle, in the cases of big sand dunes, rocky relief and others. In anticipation of X-band polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data from future sensors, we investigated the potential of X-band fully polarimetric data for discriminating between the principal classes present in a study site near Avignon, France. Decomposition and analysis techniques have been applied to a dataset acquired by the ONERA airborne RAMSES (Radar Aeroporte Multi-Spectral d'Etude des Signatures) SAR. Results show that X-band provides some discrimination capability. The polarimetric parameters, entropy and α-angle, show clearly that these signature classes are grouped into five clusters corresponding to physical scattering characteristics. The introduction of the anisotropy parameter does not increase our ability to distinguish between different classes whose clusters are in the same entropy/α-angle zone. The correlation observed between the radar signal and the surface roughness over bare soils is very low.

A semi-empirical model for the retrieval of soil roughness parameters of soil surface from radar backscattering coefficient is developed. The algorithm requires two frequency measurements. It gives good results for k/spl sigma/

A difference is generally observed between radar measurements done in parallel and perpendicular directions to rows. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of rows on backscattering in agricultural soil surfaces using a numerical approach. The first part of this study focuses on the generation of three dimensional surfaces by considering an isotropic small scale structure added to the directional structure of rows. The second part concerns numerical modelling of backscattering for the two directions by using the moment method. The authors observe a strong effect of rows on backscattering simulations, but the magnitude of the phenomenon depends on small scales structure on the soil surface.

International audience; A new empirical model for the retrieval, at a field scale, of the bare soil moisture content and the surface roughness characteristics from radar measurements is proposed. The derivation of the algorithm is based on the results of three experimental radar campaigns conducted under natural conditions over agricultural areas. Radar data were acquired by means of several C-band space borne (SIR-C, RADARSAT) or helicopter borne (ERASME) sensors, operating in different configurations of polarization (HH or VV) and incidence angle. Simultaneously to radar acquisitions, a complete ground truth data base was built up with different surface condition measurements of the mean standard deviation (rms) height s, the correlation length l, and the volumetric surface moisture Mv. This algorithm is more specifically developed using the radar cross-section σ0 (HH polarization and 39° incidence angle off nadir), namely, σ0HH,39, and the differential (HH polarization) radar cross-section Δσ0=σ0,23°−σ0,39° in terms of an original roughness parameter, Zs, namely Zs=s2/l, and Mv. A good agreement is observed between model outputs and backscattering measurements over different test fields. Eventually, an inversion technique is proposed to retrieve Zs and Mv from radar measurements.

International audience; Previous studies have shown the possibility of using ERS/SAR data to monitor surface soil moisture from space. The linear relationships between soil moisture and the SAR signal have been derived empirically and thus were a priori specific to the considered watershed. In order to overcome this limit, this study focused on 2 objectives. The first one was to validate over 2 years of data the empirical sensitivity of the radar signal to soil moisture, in the case of 3 agricultural watersheds with different soil compositions and land cover uses. The slope of the observed relationship was very consistent. The second one was to propose an operational methodology for soil monitoring based on ERS/SAR data. The implementation of this methodology is based on 2 steps: the calibration period and the operational period. During the calibration period ground truth campaigns are performed to measure vegetation parameters and the ERS/SAR data is processed only once a field land cover map is established. In contrast during the operational period no vegetation field campaigns are performed and the images are processed as soon as they are available. The results confirm the relevance of this operational methodology since no loss of performance is observed between the calibration and operational periods.; Il a été préalablement établi, la possibilité d`estimer un indice hydrologique à l`échelle du bassin à partir des données satellites ROS, telles que celles issues des images du satellite ERS. Les relations linéaires entre l` état hydrique et le signal radar étant établies empiriquement elles sont donc spécifiques d`un bassin donné. Afin de généraliser ces relations cette recherche s`est centrée sur 2 objectifs. Le premier devait permettre de valider sur 2 ans de données la sensibilité du signal à l`état hydrique du sol dans le cas de 3 bassins versants agricoles avec des compositions de sols et des couverts végétaux différents. La pente des relations est apparue très robuste. Le second objectif était de proposer une méthodologie opérationnelle pour suivre l`état hydrique du sol à partir de données ROS. La mise en oeuvre de cette méthodologie s`est appuyée sur deux étapes une période de calage et une période opérationnelle . Pendant la période de calage il est nécessaire de mesurer les paramètres de végétation ainsi que d`établir une carte précise de l`occupation du sol. Par ailleurs, pendant la période opérationnelle aucune campagne de terrain n`est nécessaire et les images sont traitées au fur et à mesures qu`elles arrivent. Les résultats obtenus confirment l`intérêt de cette méthode opérationnelle puisque aucune diminution de performance n`est constatée entre les périodes de calage et opérationnelles.

In the framework of the Alpilles-ReSeDA (Remote Sensing Data Assimilation) project, a consistent and comprehensive helicopterborne C-X band radar data set has been acquired during a complete vegetation cycle. General behavior of the data in terms of the season, the soil moisture and the soil roughness are presented here.

In this paper, a simple model is proposed for retrieving the vegetation cover over soil surfaces from radar signals acquired in semi-arid regions. In Tunisia, vegetation is characterized by the presence of clumps which partially cover the soil surface. The proposed model describes the relationship between the percentage of covered surface and the measured radar signal. Model simulations compared with actual ERS2 radar data show a very good agreement. A map of the whole studied site (in Tunisia) is then derived combining classification approach and previous modeling.

This paper discusses the potential of radar signal to characterise the stone cover over bare soil surfaces in arid rocky regions. A high correlation was observed between radar measurements and stone cover percentage. Numerical Moment method based on integral equations of backscattering has been used to study the influence of the stone cover on simulated radar signal. Simulations are validated with measurements acquired in two arid sites. A good agreement is demonstrated between numerical simulations and radar ERS2 measurements. An empirical model is then proposed to inverse radar measurements and retrieve stone cover percentage.

During the 1994 SIRC/XSAR mission, a part of the scientific activities was devoted to hydrology applications. To complement the shuttle radar data, the helicopter scatterometer ERASME was used on the Orgeval site. As a result, incidence angles ranging from 25 to 50 degrees are available in C- and X-band. Terrain measurements of soil moisture and roughness were done. The objective of this paper is to investigate the description of soil structures in this data set with a fractional Brownian model to improve the geometrical characterisation of soil and the simulation of radar backscattering over agricultural fields. The experimental soil profiles are found fractal over spatial range of few cms (clods structure). The relation between the correlation function and the fractal dimension is proved. A new empirical correlation function is developed to adjust experimental ones. It introduces improvement in the IEM model simulations of soil backscattering. Soil profiles generated with combination of fractal Brownian local structure and global structure profile are used in moment method model which gives results in good agreement with radar data.

International audience; During April 1994, the three-frequency radar system flew on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, known as SIR-C/X-SAR mission (Shuttle Imaging Radar C/X-Synthetic Aperture Radar). Over the Orgeval watershed (France), the ground condition stayed very wet throughout the 5-day SAR mission. The SAR imagery allows a data collection over a range of roughness conditions on bare soils. Three classes were identified: very smooth sowings with crusted top layer, cloddy surfaces, and different ploughed fields for future crops. To complement the Shuttle Radar data (three frequencies L, C, X, incidence range from 44° to 57°), the helicopter-borne scatterometer ERASME (C- and X-bands, copolorized configurations) was used. Merging of the two databases was possible. As a result, incidence angles ranging from 25° to 50° are available in C- and X-bands for the copolarized cross sections. Then the major objective of the article is, over this available data collection, to begin the validation of current surface backscattering models to natural surfaces, the theoretical integral equation model (IEM) of Fung et al. (1992) and the empirical model of Oh et al. (1994). It shows adequacies and limits. The IEM model reproduces well radar scatter over smooth surfaces, but fails over rough surfaces, predicting a flatter response with incidence angle than the observed signals in C- and X-bands. Difference in backscatter response due to direction angles (perpendicular and parallel to the row direction) is difficult to reproduce over smooth surfaces by this model integrating anisotropic surface but may be due to the unadequacy of the surface representation. The Oh algorithm agrees well with the backscatter response over rough surfaces at medium incidence angle, but fails with a systematic underestimation over smooth conditions. As a conclusion, further developments are necessary on derivation of theoritical solutions over rough surfaces and on validation of semiempirical algorithms over data sets of various training sources (radar and natural conditions).

International audience; We propose in this paper to evaluate a method to retrieve soil moisture (SM) and vegetation optical thickness, in areas of unknown roughness and unknown vegetation water content in view of operational applications, by using airborne Tb measurements acquired in South-West of France. Results are compared to in situ measurements, manual and automatic ones included in SMOSmania network, in the South-West of France.

Potential of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data for Mapping Irrigated areas at plot scaleHassan Bazzi 1, Nicolas Baghdadi 1, Dino Ienco 1, Mehrez Zribi 2, Hatem Belhouchette 3Irrigation plays a significant role in agricultural production in order to meet the global food requirement under changing climatic conditions. To fulfill the high demand for food with an ever-increasing global population, better planning of irrigation is required. Therefore, more focus is being set on the assessment of irrigation performance for improving water management in order to achieve higher water productivity and increase agricultural water sustainability.In the context of mapping irrigated areas, we propose an innovative approach to map irrigated areas using Sentinel-1 (S1) SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) and Sentinel-2 (S2) optical time series. Our proposed approach is based on the use of S1 and/or S2 time series combined with statistical and mathematical functions such as principal component analysis (PCA) and wavelet transformation (WT). The proposed approach was tested over the Catalonia region, Spain with a dataset containing 126 000 irrigated and 67 000 non-irrigated plots. The novelty of our study resides in eliminating the ambiguity between irrigation and rainfall by comparing between the SAR backscattering signal of each plot and that of the corresponding grid (10 km × 10 km). The potential of S2 images to classify irrigated areas by means of NDVI time series was also investigated in this study. Random forest (RF) and convolutional neural network (CNN) approaches were used to build up classification models using the PCA or WT parameters in three different scenarios: The first using only S1 data, the second using only S2 data, and the third using both S1 and S2 data.The RF classifiers built using the PCA or WT on the S1 time series perform well in mapping irrigated areas with an accuracy of 90.7% and 89.1% respectively. However, the CNN classification on the S1 temporal series produces a significant overall accuracy of 94.1%. The overall accuracy obtained using the NDVI time series in RF classifier reached 89.5% while that in the CNN reached 91.6%. Finally, the combined use of the SAR and optical data enhanced the accuracy of the RF classification but did not significantly change the overall accuracy of the CNN model.

An experiment aimed at evaluating the potential of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in monitoring hydrological parameters in semi-desert areas was carried out within the framework of the EC project FLAUBERT (FLood in Arid Units By Earth Remote Techniques). In spite of the very low changes in space and time, the analysis of backscattering and interferometric coherence showed the capability of SAR to separate a few land classes and to point out yearly variations due to vegetation cycles.

This paper presents an original methodology to retrieve surface (< 5 cm) soil moisture over low vegetated regions using the two active microwave instruments of ERS satellite. The developed algorithm takes advantage of the multi-angular configuration and high temporal resolution of the Wind Scatterometer (WSC) combined with the SAR high spatial resolution. High correlations (R/sup 2/ greater than 0.8) are observed for three studied watersheds in France with an rms error smaller than 4% between real and retrieved moistures.

International audience; The CAROLS, L band radiometer, is built and designed as a copy of EMIRAD II radiometer of DTU team. It is a Correlation radiometer with direct sampling and fully polarimetric (i.e 4 Stockes). It will be used in conjunction with other airborne instruments (in particular the C-Band scatterometer (STORM) and IEEC GPS system, Infrared CIMEL radiometer, one visible camera), in coordination with in situ field campaigns for SMOS CAL/VAL. The instruments are implemented on board the French research airplane ATR42. A validation campaign with four flights was made over south west of France, Hourtin Lake and Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) in September 2007. In order to qualify the radiometer data, different types of aircraft movements were realized: circle flights, wing and nose wags. Simultaneously to flights, different ground measurements were made over continental surfaces and ocean. First results show a good quality of data over ocean surfaces. For continental surfaces, important Radio-Frequency Interferences (RFI) were observed over a large part of the studied region.

Although the real timing and flow rates used for crop irrigation are controlled at the scale of individual plots by the irrigator, they are not generally known by the farm upper management. This information is nevertheless essential, not only to compute the water balance of irrigated plots and to schedule irrigation, but also for the management of water resources at regional scales. The aim of the present study was to detect irrigation timing using time series of surface soil moisture (SSM) derived from Sentinel-1 radar observations. The method consisted of assessing the direction of change of surface soil moisture (SSM) between observations and a water balance model, and to use thresholds to be calibrated. The performance of the approach was assessed on the F-score quantifying the accuracy of the irrigation event detections and ranging from 0 (none of the irrigation timing is correct) to 100 (perfect irrigation detection). The study focused on five irrigated and one rainfed plot of maize in South-West France, where the approach was tested using in situ measurements and surface soil moisture (SSM) maps derived from Sentinel-1 radar data. The use of in situ data showed that (1) irrigation timing was detected with a good accuracy (F-score in the range (80–83) for all plots) and (2) the optimal revisit time between two SSM observations was 2–4 days. The higher uncertainties of microwave SSM products, especially when the crop is well developed (normalized difference of vegetation index (NDVI) > 0.7), degraded the score (F-score = 69), but various possibilities of improvement were discussed. This paper opens perspectives for the irrigation detection at the plot scale over large areas and thus for the improvement of irrigation water management.

In a global context of climate change and water insecurity, soil moisture is an important land parameter for applications strongly dependent on water resources such as agriculture. Given its role in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere interactions, it is recognized as an essential climate variable (ECV). Root-Zone Soil Moisture (RZSM) is of particular interest since plants extract water and nutrients from the root zone. Over the past decades, remote sensing techniques have been employed to observe surface soil moisture (SSM). However, they do not allow the retrieval of RZSM due to the shallow penetration depth of the current sensors. In addition to direct measurements and indirect in-situ measurements, RZSM can be estimated via physically-based models, data assimilation techniques or data-driven methods. This thesis is structured in three axes and is centered on the prediction of RZSM at large scales and subkilometric resolutions using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The first part focuses on the prediction of RZSM at different locations around the world using an ANN model based on only in-situ SSM information. A transferability study of the approach as well as the contribution of each soil moisture network were conducted. Overall, the model proved to be reliable in areas of strong seasonal dynamics but less efficient in areas where the link between surface and the root zone is weak, namely in regions of high evaporation rates. The second axis aims at complexifying the method in order to improve the performances there where the first approach was lacking. A hybridization of the method was conducted by feeding physical process-related variables to the ANN model, namely the soil moisture index (SWI), evaporation efficiency and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The results demonstrated that the ANN model composed of SSM features and all process-related variables was reliable in predicting RZSM. The individual impact of each variable on the quality of predictions was also highlighted via a climate analysis. The last axis concerns RZSM spatial mapping over continental Europe at a subkilometric resolution using the locally-trained ANN model of the second axis. RZSM 1 km maps were produced based on SSM 1 km data provided by the Copernicus SSM1km product and process-related variables. For validation purposes, 9 km and 36 km RZSM maps were also produced based on other SSM products. The 1 km RZSM product was consistent with the validation data over some areas but constrained by the C-band limitations (product SSM1km) over complex sceneries. The 9 km and 36 km RZSM maps which were generated by the same ANN model highlight the impact of data quality on the quality of the predictions. Overall, we demonstrated the feasibility of spatializing RZSM at large scales and subkilometric resolution from a locally-trained ANN model. More qualitative SSM data are expected from future missions and are promising for the enhancement of the prediction product.; Dans un contexte global de changement climatique et de défis liés à l'insécurité hydrique, l'humidité du sol est bel et bien une variable de fort intérêt pour des applications dépendant des ressources en eau telle que l'agriculture. Vu son rôle majeur dans les interactions sol-végétation-atmosphère, elle est reconnue comme une variable climatique essentielle (ECV). L'humidité du sol de la zone racinaire (RZSM) est particulièrement intéressante car les plantes extraient l'eau et les nutriments de la zone racinaire. Au cours des dernières décennies, les techniques de télédétection ont permis d'observer l'humidité du sol de surface (SSM) mais ne permettent pas l'acquisition de la RZSM vu la profondeur de pénétration limitée des capteurs actuels. Outre les mesures directes et les mesures indirectes in-situ, la RZSM peut être estimée via des méthodes basées sur la modélisation physique, techniques d'assimilation de données ou des méthodes basées sur les données. Cette thèse est structurée en trois axes et se focalise sur la prédiction de la RZSM à large échelle et à résolution subkilométrique en utilisant les réseaux de neurones artificiels (ANN). La première partie est centrée autour de la prédiction de la RZSM à différents endroits du monde à l'aide d'un modèle ANN qui se base uniquement sur des données in-situ de la SSM. Une étude de transférabilité de l'approche ainsi que de la contribution de chaque réseau d'humidité a été conduite. Dans l'ensemble, le modèle s'est avéré fiable dans les zones à fortes dynamiques saisonnières mais moins performant dans les zones où le lien entre surface et zone racinaire s'affaiblit telles que les zones à forts taux d'évaporation. Le deuxième axe vise à complexifier la méthode pour améliorer les performances là où la première approche est insuffisante. Une hybridation de la méthode est effectuée en alimentant le ANN par des variables liées aux processus physiques, à savoir l'indice d'humidité des sols (SWI), une efficacité d'évaporation et l'indice de végétation par différence normalisée (NDVI). Les résultats ont montré que le modèle ANN composé des entrées SSM et de toutes les variables liées aux processus était plus fiable pour prédire la RZSM. L'impact individuel de chaque variable sur la qualité des prédictions a été également mis en évidence via une analyse climatique. Le dernier axe concerne la cartographie de la RZSM à l'échelle de l'Europe continentale et à résolution subkilométrique en utilisant le modèle ANN localement entraîné du deuxième axe. Des cartes de la RZSM à 1 km ont été produites à partir de données SSM à 1 km fournies par le produit Copernicus SSM1km et à partir des variables liées aux processus. En guise de validation, des cartes RZSM à 9 km et 36 km ont été aussi produites à partir d'autres produits SSM. Le produit RZSM à 1 km était en accord avec les données de validation sur certaines régions mais contrarié par les limitations de la bande C (produit SSM1km) sur les scènes complexes. Les cartes RZSM à 9 km et 36 km, générées par le même modèle ANN, soulignent l'impact de la qualité des données sur les prédictions. Dans l'ensemble, on a démontré la faisabilité de spatialiser la RZSM à large échelle et à résolution subkilométrique à partir d'un modèle ANN localement entraîné. Des données plus qualitatives de la SSM sont attendues de prochaines missions satellitaires et constituent une piste d'amélioration de l'approche.

Climate change, irrigation development, and a growing population across the Mediterranean region are increasing the pressure on water resources in terms of both quantity and quality. High-quality water should be primarily reserved to drinking water while water reuse is, and should be, a growing part of the water mix for other uses. This chapter provides an overview of the current water reuse situation in agriculture across the region, including planned projects and unplanned practices. It highlights the diversity of policy contexts (legal frameworks, national strategies, and governance arrangements) by reviewing the specific experiences of Jordan, France, Morocco, and Algeria. It also highlights the diversity of irrigation practices on the ground, and discusses health-related issues and agronomical performances. It concludes by stressing the potential for planned water reuse, both direct and indirect, while reminding that water reuse should not be primarily perceived as a new resource by policy-makers, but rather as a means to raise water productivity. Finally, an integrated approach is recommended, capable of including environmental, economic, and equity considerations.

Agriculture is considered as one of the most important sectors in Tunisia on which the country's economy is predominately based. It is also important because of its contribution to food security. In the context of natural resource management, the characterization and monitoring of surface states is essential, particularly in semi-arid regions where several constraints hamper agricultural development (period of drought, conflicts over water sharing, lack of resources, overpumping of groundwater, etc.). In Tunisia, nearly 80% of available water resources are used by agriculture with limited efficiency. Here, with very limited water resources, the estimation of the surface water state is necessary to establish the appropriate decisions for a better sustainable management. In this context, remote sensing provides a fundamental database for surface observation. Indeed, these new systems offer operational products with a high temporal repeatability and metric spatial resolutions allowing regular monitoring. In our context, radar data is particularly sensitive to surface conditions, specifically soil moisture, surface roughness and vegetation cover. They are unveiled as the most promising tools for accurate monitoring at the field or regional scale. This work includes two main parts that directly relate soil moisture (key variable for different processes) to irrigation first, and then to soil texture. The approach adopted combines experimental measurements with the use of different remote sensing data in synergy, modeling and mapping. The thesis is structured in three parts. The first part of this work evaluates the potential of C-band radar data for a large database. The results showed through behavioral and modeling studies that the radar signal could retrieve temporal and spatial dynamics of soil moisture on cereal plots. The second component consists of evaluating the combined use of optical and radar data in order to predict surface water conditions over vegetative cover. Agriculture is considered as one of the most important sectors in Tunisia on which the country's economy is predominately based. It is also important because of its contribution to food security. In the context of natural resource management, the characterization and monitoring of surface states is essential, particularly in semi-arid regions where several constraints hamper agricultural development (period of drought, conflicts over water sharing, lack of resources, overpumping of groundwater, etc.). In Tunisia, nearly 80% of available water resources are used by agriculture with limited efficiency. L'estimació dels recursos hídrics de les superfícies continentals a escala regional i global és fonamental per a una bona gestió dels recursos hídrics. Aquesta estimació cobreix una àmplia gamma de temes i camps, incloent-hi la caracterització dels sòls i dels recursos hídrics a l’escala de la conca, la modelització hidrològica i la predicció i la cartografia d'inundacions. En aquest context, la caracterització dels estats de la superfície continental, per a obtenir millors paràmetres d’entrada als models hidrològics, és essencial per millorar la precisió en la simulació de cabals, sequeres i inundacions. L’estimació del contingut d’aigua en el sistema, incloses les diferents masses d’aigua i l’aigua lliure en el sòl, és especialment necessària per a una descripció precisa dels processos hidrològics i, en general, del cicle de l’aigua a les superfícies continentals. Per caracteritzar millor els processos hidrològics, les intervencions antropogèniques no es poden negligir. L'home influeix en el cicle de l'aigua, principalment mitjançant el reg i la construcció de preses, fet que s’ha de quantificar correctament. L’objectiu de la tesi és la millora de l’estimació remota dels recursos hídrics, incloent-hi la quantificació dels factors antròpics, mitjançant l’ús de diversos sensors llançats recentment, aprofitant recents desenvolupaments en la tecnologia de teledetecció. Amb l'arribada de les constel·lacions Sentinel (Sentinel-1, 2, 3), disposem de millors eines per estimar els recursos hídrics, incloent-hi els impactes humans, amb una major precisió i cobertura. Aquest treball de tesi consta principalment de dues línies de recerca on s’estimen les intervencions humanes en el cicle hidrològic: la cartografia del reg (com a aplicació en humitat del sòl), i el forçament d’embassaments en simulacions hidrològiques (com a aplicació de l’altimetria). En la primera linia s’estima la humitat del sòl a partir de l’anàlisi estadística de les dades SAR de Sentinel-1. Es desenvolupen dues metodologies per obtenir la humitat del sòl amb una resolució espacial de 100 m basant-se en la interpretació de les dades de Sentinel-1 obtingudes amb la polarització VV (vertical-vertical), que es combina amb dades òptiques Sentinel-2 per a l'anàlisi dels efectes de la vegetació. Com aplicació de la humitat del sòl, es cartografia el reg en diverses condicions meteorològiques, i amb una alta resolució espacial i temporal. Es proposa una metodologia per a la cartografia del reg mitjançant dades SAR obtingudes en polaritzacions VV (vertical-vertical) i VH (vertical-horitzontal). A partir de la sèrie temporal Sentinel-1, s’analitzen diferents estadístiques i mètriques, incloent-hi el valor mitjà, la variància del senyal, la longitud de la correlació i la dimensió fractal, a partir dels quals es classifiquen els arbres irrigats, els cultius irrigats i els cultius no irrigats. En la segona línia, s’estima el nivell dels embassaments a partir de les dades d’altimetria de Sentinel-3, amb l’altímetre SAR (SRAL), basant-se en diferents algorismes per millorar la precisió. Aquest estudi presenta tres algorismes especialitzats o retrackers destinats a obtenir el nivell de la superfície dels cossos d’aigua estudiats, minimitzant la contaminació de les formes d’ona degut al sòl que els envolta. Es compara el rendiment del mètode proposat de selecció de la porció d’ona amb tres retrackers, és a dir, un retracker de llindar, el retracker del centre de gravetat (OCOG) i un retracker de base física de dos passos. S’obtenen sèries temporals del nivell de la làmina d’aigua d’embassaments situats a la conca del riu Ebre (Espanya). Com aplicació, les sèries de nivell dels embassaments obtingudes s’utilitzen per a forçar els embassaments en simulacions hidrològiques. En este contexto, la caracterización de los estados de la superficie continental, para obtener mejores parámetros de entrada para los modelos hidrológicos, es esencial para mejorar la precisión en la simulación de caudales, sequías e inundaciones. La estimación del contenido de agua en el sistema, incluidas las diferentes masas de agua y el agua libre en el suelo, es especialmente necesaria para una descripción precisa de los procesos hidrológicos y, en general, del ciclo del agua en las superficies continentales. Una caracterización precisa de los procesos hidrológicos requiere no descuidar las intervenciones humanas. El hombre influye en el ciclo del agua, principalmente mediante el riego y la construcción de embalses, lo que se debe cuantificar correctamente. El objetivo de la tesis es la mejora de la estimación remota de los recursos hídricos, incluyendo la cuantificación de los factores humanos, mediante el uso de varios sensores lanzados recientemente, aprovechando recientes desarrollos en la tecnología de teledetección. Con la llegada de las constelaciones Sentinel (Sentinel-1, 2, 3), disponemos de mejores herramientas para estimar los recursos hídricos, incluyendo los impactos humanos, con una mayor precisión y cobertura. Este trabajo de tesis consta principalmente en dos ejes de investigación donde se estiman las intervenciones humanas en el ciclo hidrológico: la cartografía del riego (como aplicación en humedad del suelo), y el forzamiento de embalses en simulaciones hidrológicas (como aplicación de la altimetría). En relación al primer eje, se estima la humedad del suelo a partir del análisis estadístico de los datos SAR de Sentinel-1. Se desarrollan dos metodologías para obtener la humedad del suelo con una resolución espacial de 100 m basándose en la interpretación de los datos de Sentinel-1 obtenidas con la polarización VV (vertical-vertical), que se combina con datos ópticas Sentinel-2 para el análisis de los efectos de la vegetación. Como aplicación de la humedad del suelo, se cartografía el riego en diversas condiciones meteorológicas, y con una alta resolución espacial y temporal. Se propone una metodología para la cartografía del riego mediante datos SAR obtenidos en polarizaciones VV (vertical-vertical) y VH (vertical-horizontal). A partir de la serie temporal Sentinel-1, se analizan diferentes estadísticas y métricas, incluyendo el valor medio, la varianza de la señal, la longitud de la correlación y la dimensión fractal, a partir de los cuales se clasifican los árboles irrigados, los cultivos irrigados y los cultivos no irrigados. En el segundo eje, se estima el nivel de los embalses a partir de los datos de altimetría de Sentinel-3, con el altímetro SAR (SRAL), basándose en diferentes algoritmos para mejorar la precisión. Este estudio presenta tres algoritmos especializados o retrackers destinados a obtener el nivel de la superficie de los cuerpos de agua estudiados, minimizando la contaminación de las formas de onda debido al suelo que los rodea. Se compara el rendimiento del método propuesto de selección de la porción de onda con tres retrackers, es decir, un retracker de umbral, el retracker del centro de gravedad (OCOG) y un retracker de base física de dos pasos. Se obtienen series temporales del nivel de la lámina de agua de embalses situados en la cuenca del río Ebro (España). Como aplicación, las series de nivel de los embalses obtenidas se utilizan para forzar los embalses en simulaciones hidrológicas. The estimation of the water resources of the continental surfaces at a regional and global scale is fundamental for good water resources management. This estimation covers a wide range of topics and fields, including the characterisation of soils and water resources at the basin scale, hydrological modelling and flood prediction and mapping. In this context, the characterisation of the states of the continental surface, to obtain better input parameters for hydrological models, is essential to improve the precision in the simulation of flows, droughts, and floods. The estimation of the water content in the system, including the different water bodies and the free water in the soil, is especially necessary for a precise description of the hydrological processes and, in general, of the water cycle on the continental surfaces. To better characterise hydrological processes, human interventions cannot be neglected. Humans influence the water cycle, mainly through irrigation and the construction of reservoirs, which must be correctly quantified. The objective of the thesis is the improvement of the remote estimation of water resources, including the quantification of human factors, using several sensors recently launched, taking advantage of recent developments in remote sensing technology. With the arrival of the Sentinel constellations (Sentinel-1, 2, 3), we have better tools to estimate water resources, including human impacts, with greater precision and coverage. This thesis consists mainly of two parts where human interventions in the water cycle are considered: irrigation cartography (as an application of soil moisture), and the forcing of reservoirs in hydrological simulations (as an application of altimetry). Firstly, soil moisture is estimated from the statistical analysis of Sentinel-1 SAR data. Two methodologies are developed to obtain soil moisture with a spatial resolution of 100 m based on the interpretation of Sentinel-1 data collected with the VV polarization (vertical-vertical), which is combined with optical data of Sentinel-2 for the analysis of the effects of vegetation. Secondly, irrigation is mapped under various meteorological conditions, including high spatial and temporal resolution. A methodology for irrigation mapping is proposed using SAR data obtained in VV (vertical-vertical) and VH (vertical-horizontal) polarizations. With Sentinel-1 time series, different statistics and metrics are analysed, including the mean value, the variance of the signal, the correlation length and the fractal dimension, based on which the classification of irrigated trees, irrigated crops, and non-irrigated crops are derived. Finally, the level of the reservoirs is estimated from the Sentinel-3 altimetry data, with the SAR altimeter (SRAL), based on different algorithms to improve the accuracy. This study presents three specialised algorithms or retrackers designed to obtain the level of the surface of the studied inland bodies of water, minimising the contamination of the waveforms due to the surrounding soil. The performance of the selection method of the proposed wave portion is compared with three retrackers, that is, the centre of gravity retracker (OCOG) and the two-step physical-based retracker. Temporal series of the water level of reservoirs located in the basin of the Ebro River (Spain) are obtained. As an application, the level series of the reservoirs obtained are used to force the reservoirs in hydrological simulations. L'estimation et le suivi des ressources en eau des surfaces continentales aux niveaux régional et global est essentielle pour la gestion du bilan hydrique, particulièrement dans le contexte des changements climatiques et anthropiques. Ils couvrent un large éventail de thèmes et de domaines, incluant la caractérisation des ressources en eau à l'échelle du bassin, la modélisation hydrologique ainsi que la prévision et la cartographie des inondations. Dans ce contexte, la caractérisation des états de surface, en tant que paramètres d’entrée dans les modèles hydrologiques, est essentielle pour obtenir une meilleure précision de la simulation, qui est liée à la précision prévisionnelle des débits des cours d’eau et le suivi des sécheresses et des inondations. L'estimation de la teneur en eau des surfaces continentales, incluant l’état hydrique du sol et les niveaux des surfaces couvertes d’eau, est particulièrement nécessaire pour une description précise des processus hydrologiques et plus généralement du cycle de l'eau sur les surfaces continentales. Afin de mieux comprendre les processus hydrologiques, l'influence humaine (l’effet anthropique) sur le cycle de l'eau nécessite une évaluation fine. Elle est particulièrement liée à la gestion de l’irrigation et la construction de barrages. L'objectif de la thèse était d'améliorer l'estimation des ressources en eau et une meilleure caractérisation des interventions anthropiques à travers l'utilisation de nouveaux capteurs satellitaires multi-configurations du programme européen Copernicus. Avec le développement de la technologie de télédétection spatiale, et plus particulièrement avec l’arrivée des constellations Sentinel (Sentinel-1, 2, 3) à haute résolution spatiale et temporelle, il existe un meilleur outil pour estimer les états des surfaces continentales. Ce travail de thèse comprend principalement deux priorités liées à des interventions humaines dans le cycle hydrologique:la cartographie de l'irrigation en tant que action humaine liée directement à l'humidité du sol et le forçage des barrages dans un modèle de simulation de rivière en tant qu'application liée à l’estimation du niveau de l'eau libre. Un premier axe de recherche a été basé sur une analyse statistique des données SAR Sentinel-1 pour caractériser l’état hydrique du sol. Deux méthodes ont été développées pour estimer ce paramètre avec une résolution spatiale de 100 m. Elles sont basées sur des approches de détection de changement à partir des données Sentinel-1 acquises en polarisation VV (verticale-verticale), combinées aux données optiques Sentinel-2 pour corriger les effets de la végétation. L’application consistait à cartographier l'irrigation, avec des résolutions spatiale et temporelle élevées. Une méthodologie de cartographie de l'irrigation utilisant des données SAR Sentinel-1 a été proposée. Elle estbasée sur les acquisitions en polarisations VV (vertical-vertical) et VH (vertical-horizontal). A partir de la série temporelle des mesures Sentinel-1, des paramètres statistiques tel que la valeur moyenne, la variance du signal, la longueur de corrélation temporelle et la dimension fractale, sont analysées, en fonction du type de culture; cultures annuelles irriguées, arbres irrigués et cultures pluviales. Des classifications supervisées utilisant les approches Random Forest et SVM sont testées. En deuxième axe, l'estimation de la hauteur de la surface de l'eau à partir des données altimétriques de Sentinel-3 avec l’altimètre SAR (SRAL) a été réalisée à l'aide de différents algorithmes afin d'améliorer la précision sur des petites surfaces. Cette étude présente trois algorithmes spécialisés (ou retrackers) dédiées à la minimisation de la contamination des sols par les formes d’ondes permettant de récupérer les niveaux d’eau à partir de données altimétriques SAR sur des masses d’eaux intérieures. Les performances de la méthode de sélection de portion de forme d'onde proposée avec trois retrackers, à savoir, le retracker à seuil, le retracker à centre de gravité décalé (OCOG) et le retracker à base physique à 2 étapes, sont comparées. Des séries chronologiques de niveaux d'eau sont extraites pour les masses d'eau du bassin de l'Èbre (Espagne). Une application des produits altimétriques est proposée. Le produit de niveau d’eau a été utilisé comme paramètre d’entrée pour analyser l’effet tampon des barrages dans les simulations de débits fluviaux.

The estimation of the water resources of the continental surfaces at a regional and global scale is fundamental for good water resources management. This estimation covers a wide range of topics and fields, including the characterisation of soils and water resources at the basin scale, hydrological modelling and flood prediction and mapping. In this context, the characterisation of the states of the continental surface, to obtain better input parameters for hydrological models, is essential to improve the precision in the simulation of flows, droughts, and floods. The estimation of the water content in the system, including the different water bodies and the free water in the soil, is especially necessary for a precise description of the hydrological processes and, in general, of the water cycle on the continental surfaces. To better characterise hydrological processes, human interventions cannot be neglected. Humans influence the water cycle, mainly through irrigation and the construction of reservoirs, which must be correctly quantified.The objective of the thesis is the improvement of the remote estimation of water resources, including the quantification of human factors, using several sensors recently launched, taking advantage of recent developments in remote sensing technology. Dans ce contexte, la caractérisation des états de surface, en tant que paramètres d’entrée dans les modèles hydrologiques, est essentielle pour obtenir une meilleure précision de la simulation, qui est liée à la précision prévisionnelle des débits des cours d’eau et le suivi des sécheresses et des inondations. L'estimation de la teneur en eau des surfaces continentales, incluant l’état hydrique du sol et les niveaux des surfaces couvertes d’eau, est particulièrement nécessaire pour une description précise des processus hydrologiques et plus généralement du cycle de l'eau sur les surfaces continentales. Afin de mieux comprendre les processus hydrologiques, l'influence humaine (l’effet anthropique) sur le cycle de l'eau nécessite une évaluation fine. Elle est particulièrement liée à la gestion de l’irrigation et la construction de barrages.L'objectif de la thèse était d'améliorer l'estimation des ressources en eau et une meilleure caractérisation des interventions anthropiques à travers l'utilisation de nouveaux capteurs satellitaires multi-configurations du programme européen Copernicus. Avec le développement de la technologie de télédétection spatiale, et plus particulièrement avec l’arrivée des constellations Sentinel (Sentinel-1, 2, 3) à haute résolution spatiale et temporelle, il existe un meilleur outil pour estimer les états des surfaces continentales. Ce travail de thèse comprend principalement deux priorités liées à des interventions humaines dans le cycle hydrologique:la cartographie de l'irrigation en tant que action humaine liée directement à l'humidité du sol et le forçage des barrages dans un modèle de simulation de rivière en tant qu'application liée à l’estimation du niveau de l'eau libre.Un premier axe de recherche a été basé sur une analyse statistique des données SAR Sentinel-1 pour caractériser l’état hydrique du sol. Deux méthodes ont été développées pour estimer ce paramètre avec une résolution spatiale de 100 m. Elles sont basées sur des approches de détection de changement à partir des données Sentinel-1 acquises en polarisation VV (verticale-verticale), combinées aux données optiques Sentinel-2 pour corriger les effets de la végétation.L’application consistait à cartographier l'irrigation, avec des résolutions spatiale et temporelle élevées. Une méthodologie de cartographie de l'irrigation utilisant des données SAR Sentinel-1 a été proposée. Elle estbasée sur les acquisitions en polarisations VV (vertical-vertical) et VH (vertical-horizontal). A partir de la série temporelle des mesures Sentinel-1, des paramètres statistiques tel que la valeur moyenne, la variance du signal, la longueur de corrélation temporelle et la dimension fractale, sont analysées, en fonction du type de culture; cultures annuelles irriguées, arbres irrigués et cultures pluviales. Des classifications supervisées utilisant les approches Random Forest et SVM sont testées.En deuxième axe, l'estimation de la hauteur de la surface de l'eau à partir des données altimétriques de Sentinel-3 avec l’altimètre SAR (SRAL) a été réalisée à l'aide de différents algorithmes afin d'améliorer la précision sur des petites surfaces. Cette étude présente trois algorithmes spécialisés (ou retrackers) dédiées à la minimisation de la contamination des sols par les formes d’ondes permettant de récupérer les niveaux d’eau à partir de données altimétriques SAR sur des masses d’eaux intérieures. Les performances de la méthode de sélection de portion de forme d'onde proposée avec trois retrackers, à savoir, le retracker à seuil, le retracker à centre de gravité décalé (OCOG) et le retracker à base physique à 2 étapes, sont comparées. Des séries chronologiques de niveaux d'eau sont extraites pour les masses d'eau du bassin de l'Èbre (Espagne).Une application des produits altimétriques est proposée. Le produit de niveau d’eau a été utilisé comme paramètre d’entrée pour analyser l’effet tampon des barrages dans les simulations de débits fluviaux.

Rice is the primary staple food of more than half of world’s population and plays an especially important role in global economy, food security, water use and climate change. The objective of this thesis was to develop methods for rice monitoring based on Sentinel-1 data and to effectively use the mapping products in various applications concerning food security and global environment. Specifically, the study aims at providing tools for observation of the rice cultivation systems, by generating products such as map of rice planted area, map of rice start-of-season and phenological stages, and map of rice crop intensity, together with rice crop parameters such as category of rice varieties (long or short cycle), and plant height. The information to be provided is necessary for the estimation of crop production, and for the management of rice ecosystems at the regional scale. We also investigated on how the products derived from EO Sentinel-1 data can be integrated in process-based models for rice production estimation and methane emission estimation. The test region is one of the world’s major rice regions: the Mekong River Delta, in Vietnam. This region presents a diversity in rice cultivation practices, in cropping density, from single to triple crop a year, and in crop calendar. The first step was to understand the temporal variation of the backscatter Sentinel-1 backscatter of rice fields, at VH and VV polarizations. For this purpose, in-situ data have been collected on 60 fields during 2 years, for the 5 rice seasons. It was found that backscatter time series of rice fields show very specific temporal behavior, with respect to other land use land cover types. The temporal and polarization variations of the rice backscatter have been interpreted with respect to physical interaction mechanisms to relate the backscatter dynamics to the key phenological stages, when the plants change its morphology and biomass. Because the same trend of temporal curves was observed over 5 rice seasons, it was possible to derive a mean curve to be used in the methodology developed for detecting rice phenology, and deriving information such as the date of sowing, the rice varieties of long and short duration cycle, or plant height, at each SAR acquisition date. The methods have been developed and applied to the Mekong delta. Products validation provides a good agreement with the reference data sets: 98% in rice/non-rice accuracy, the sowing dates RMSE of about 4 days, plant height RMSE of 7.8 cm, the long/short variety map has 91.7% accuracy and for phenology, only one season has been processed with good detection rate of 59/60. Finally, the use of the rice monitoring products as inputs in two process-based models was assessed. The models are ORYZA2000 for rice production estimation and DNDC for methane emission and water demand estimation. Sentinel-1 data retrieved information (sowing date, phenology, long/short variety, plant height) were used as model inputs, giving good agreement with the results making use of ground survey only. Based on the two process models with inputs from Sentinel-1 data, it was possible to have an integrated result on rice yield, water use, and methane emissions. The preliminary results show a good potential for the optimization of water management in rice fields in order to reduce water use and GHG emission, without reducing the yield. To achieve the objective which is the effective use of Sentinel-1 data for rice monitoring for food security and global environment, more works need to be done concerning the consolidation of the rice monitoring method development and the integration of Sentinel-1 derived information in models aiming at estimating and predicting rice production, methane emission and water use; Le riz est la principale denrée de plus de la moitié de la population mondiale et joue un rôle particulièrement important dans l'économie mondiale, la sécurité alimentaire, la consommation d'eau, et le changement climatique. Les résultats obtenus sur le Delta du Mékong ont été validés à l'aide des données terrain de référence, et sont très satisfaisants : 98% de précision pour la carte riz/non riz, une RMSE de 4 jours pour la date de semis, une RMSE de 0.78 cm pour la hauteur de plante, 91,7% de précision pour la distinction entre deux types de riz (cycle court et cycle long), et 98% de précision sur l'estimation du stade phénologique. Enfin, nous avons évalué l'utilisation de ces produits issus de données Sentinel-1 dans le modèle ORYZA2000 destiné à estimer le rendement du riz, et dans le modèle DNDC destiné à estimer le volume d'eau nécessaire à la culture, ainsi que l'émission de méthane par les rizières. Les résultats, préliminaires, montrent le bon potentiel de l'approche pour fournir le rendement, le bilan d'eau, et les taux d'émission de méthane sur les champs de riz considérés. Cette approche permettrait de faire des analyses de sensibilité, par exemple pour optimiser la gestion d'irrigation afin de réduire la consommation d'eau et l'émission de méthane, tout en préservant le rendement du riz. Ces travaux, qui démontrent le potentiel des données Sentinel-1 pour le suivi du riz à large échelle, seront à compléter afin de réaliser des applications effectives opérationnelles. Spatial remote sensing is of paramount importance for mapping and monitoring environmental problems. Its interest lies in the ability of space satellite sensors in providing permanent information of the planet, at local, regional and global scales. Also, it provides spatial and repetitive territories visions and ecosystem views. Radar remote sensing has shown great potential in recent years for the characterization of soil surface conditions. The state of the soil surface, in particular moisture and roughness, has a fundamental influence on the distribution of rainfall between infiltration, surface retention and runoff. In addition, it plays an essential role in surface hydrological processes and those associated with erosion and evapotranspiration processes. Characterization and consideration of these surface conditions have been recently considered as an important issue for physically based modeling of hydrological processes or for surface-atmosphere coupling. In this context and for several years, several scientific studies have shown the potential of active microwave data for estimation of the soil moisture and the surface roughness.New SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems have opened new perspectives for earth observation through improved spatial resolution (metric on TerraSAR-X and COSMO-SkyMed) and temporal resolution (TerraSAR-X, COSMO-SkyMed, Sentinel-1) . The recent availability of new Sentinel-1 C-band radar sensors (free and open access) makes it essential to evaluate the potential of Sentinel-1 data for the characterization of soil surface conditions and in particular surface roughness.The work revolves around three parts. The first part consist of evaluation of the most used radar backscattering models (IEM, Oh, Dubois, and AIEM) using a wide dataset of SAR data and experimental soil measurements. This evaluation gives the ability to find the most robust backscattering model that simulates the radar signal with good agreement in order to use later in the inversion procedure of the radar signal for estimating the soil roughness. The second research axe of this thesis consists of proposing an empirical radar backscattering model for HH, HV and VV polarizations. This new model will be developed using a large real dataset. This new model also will be used in the inversion procedure of the radar signal for estimating the soil roughness. The last axe of this thesis consists of producing a method to invert the radar signal using neural networks. The objective is to evaluate the potential of Sentinel-1 data for estimating surface roughness. These neural networks will be trained using wide synthetic dataset produced from the radar backscattering models chosen (IEM calibrated by Baghdadi and the new proposed model) and validated using two datasets: one synthetic dataset and one real (Sentinel 1 images and in-situ measurements). The real datasets are collected from Tunisia (Kairouan) and France (Versailles).; La télédétection spatiale est d’une importance primordiale pour la cartographie et la surveillance des problèmes environnementaux. Son intérêt réside dans la capacité des capteurs satellitaires spatiaux à fournir des informations globales et permanentes de la planète, aux échelles locale à globale. La télédétection radar a montré son grand potentiel ces dernières années dans la caractérisation des états de surface du sol. L’état de la surface du sol, et en particulier l’humidité et la rugosité, exerce une influence fondamentale sur la répartition de la pluie entre infiltration, rétention superficielle et ruissellement. Il a un rôle essentiel dans les processus hydrologiques de surface et ceux associés à l’érosion et aux processus d’évapotranspiration. La caractérisation et la prise en compte de ces conditions de surface constituent actuellement un enjeu important pour la modélisation à base physique des processus hydrologiques ou pour le couplage surface-atmosphère. Dans ce cadre et depuis plusieurs années, plusieurs études scientifiques ont montré le potentiel des données micro-ondes actives dans l’estimation de l’état hydrique du sol et de sa rugosité de surface.Les nouveaux systèmes radar (SAR ʺSynthetic Aperture Radarʺ) ont permis d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives pour l’observation de la terre grâce à l’amélioration de la résolution spatiale (métrique sur TerraSAR-X et COSMO-SkyMed) et temporelle (TerraSAR-X, COSMO-SkyMed, Sentinel-1). La disponibilité depuis peu des nouveaux capteurs radar bande C Sentinel-1 (Sentinel-1A et Sentinel-1B) rend indispensable l’évaluation des données Sentinel-1 pour la caractérisation des états de surface du sol et en particulier la rugosité de surface.Le travail de thèse se structure en trois parties. La première partie consiste à évaluer les modèles de rétrodiffusion de radar les plus utilisés (IEM, Oh, Dubois and AIEM) en utilisant un large ensemble de données de SAR et des mesures expérimentales des paramètres du sol. Cette évaluation permet de trouver le modèle de rétrodiffusion le plus robuste qui simule le mieux le signal radar afin de l'utiliser par la suite dans la procédure d'inversion du signal radar pour estimer la rugosité du sol. Le deuxième axe de recherche de cette thèse consiste à proposer un modèle de rétrodiffusion radar semi-empirique pour les polarisations HH, HV et VV. Ce nouveau modèle sera construit à l'aide d'une grande base de données réelle. Ce nouveau modèle sera également utilisé dans la procédure d'inversion du signal radar pour estimer la rugosité du sol. Le dernier axe de cette thèse consiste à construire une méthode d’inversion du signal radar en utilisant les réseaux de neurones afin d’évaluer le potentiel des données Sentinel-1 pour l’estimation de la rugosité des sols en milieux agricoles. Ces réseaux de neurones seront entrainés à l'aide d'un ensemble de données synthétiques élaborées à partir des modèles de rétrodiffusion radar choisis (IEM calibré par Baghdadi et du nouveau modèle proposé) et validés en utilisant deux ensembles de données: un ensemble de données synthétiques et une base de données réelle (images Sentinel-1 et mesures in situ d’humidité et de rugosité du sol). La base de données réelle a été collectée en Tunisie (Kairouan) et en France (Versailles).

International audience; Maps and spatial analyses are increasingly used in the field of health to illustrate the spatial and temporal organization of data and to provide a geographical perspective on health data. Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and geomatics tools in general, are thus used by health organizations (local or international) to inform on the distribution of diseases, by managers to monitor and control epidemics, and by doctors and researchers to understand disease distributions. Scientific publications in the field of health also show the widespread use of spatial maps and analyses. Major organizations such as the World Health Organization, ministries of health in many countries, and research organizations have set up GIS laboratories with geomaticians or health geographers to conduct these tasks. However, many organizations do not have in-house expertise and still wish to conduct such analyses. More and more people in the field of health are thus being trained in geomatics, but implementation remains difficult due to the complexity of the tools and the often sporadic use.

International audience; This chapter illustrates the implementation of a conventional methodology in landscape ecology. The method is based on an existing landscape representation, i.e. a land cover description of the landscape which consists of the following steps: computation of a set of features and use of the features as explanatory variables in a descriptive model built on the observed biodiversity. The chapter shows the feasibility of the analysis in landscape ecology by combining several free tools interfaced with GIS software: the remote sensing tool, Orfeo Toolbox; the landscape descriptors calculation tool, Landscape ecology statistics (LecoS); and the statistical modeling tool, R, and its development interface, R Studio. The proposed three‐step method is adapted to the free and open‐access software, Quantum GIS (QGIS 2.18 Windows), so that a user, without large expertise in remote sensing and geomatics, can use it without signing up for use of software licenses.

The real datasets are collected from Tunisia (Kairouan) and France (Versailles).; La télédétection spatiale est d'une importance primordiale pour la cartographie et la surveillance des problèmes environnementaux. Son intérêt réside dans la capacité des capteurs satellitaires spatiaux à fournir des informations globales et permanentes de la planète, aux échelles locale à globale. La télédétection radar a montré son grand potentiel ces dernières années dans la caractérisation des états de surface du sol. L'état de la surface du sol, et en particulier l'humidité et la rugosité, exerce une influence fondamentale sur la répartition de la pluie entre infiltration, rétention superficielle et ruissellement. Il a un rôle essentiel dans les processus hydrologiques de surface et ceux associés à l'érosion et aux processus d'évapotranspiration. La caractérisation et la prise en compte de ces conditions de surface constituent actuellement un enjeu important pour la modélisation à base physique des processus hydrologiques ou pour le couplage surface-atmosphère. Dans ce cadre et depuis plusieurs années, plusieurs études scientifiques ont montré le potentiel des données micro-ondes actives dans l'estimation de l'état hydrique du sol et de sa rugosité de surface. Les nouveaux systèmes radar (SAR ʺSynthetic Aperture Radarʺ) ont permis d'ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives pour l'observation de la terre grâce à l'amélioration de la résolution spatiale (métrique sur TerraSAR-X et COSMO-SkyMed) et temporelle (TerraSAR-X, COSMO-SkyMed, Sentinel-1). La disponibilité depuis peu des nouveaux capteurs radar bande C Sentinel-1 (Sentinel-1A et Sentinel-1B) rend indispensable l'évaluation des données Sentinel-1 pour la caractérisation des états de surface du sol et en particulier la rugosité de surface. Le travail de thèse se structure en trois parties. La première partie consiste à évaluer les modèles de rétrodiffusion de radar les plus utilisés (IEM, Oh, Dubois and AIEM) en utilisant un large ensemble de données de SAR et des mesures expérimentales des paramètres du sol. Cette évaluation permet de trouver le modèle de rétrodiffusion le plus robuste qui simule le mieux le signal radar afin de l'utiliser par la suite dans la procédure d'inversion du signal radar pour estimer la rugosité du sol. Le deuxième axe de recherche de cette thèse consiste à proposer un modèle de rétrodiffusion radar semi-empirique pour les polarisations HH, HV et VV. Ce nouveau modèle sera construit à l'aide d'une grande base de données réelle. Ce nouveau modèle sera également utilisé dans la procédure d'inversion du signal radar pour estimer la rugosité du sol. Le dernier axe de cette thèse consiste à construire une méthode d'inversion du signal radar en utilisant les réseaux de neurones afin d'évaluer le potentiel des données Sentinel-1 pour l'estimation de la rugosité des sols en milieux agricoles. Ces réseaux de neurones seront entraînés à l'aide d'un ensemble de données synthétiques élaborées à partir des modèles de rétrodiffusion radar choisis (IEM calibré par Baghdadi et du nouveau modèle proposé) et validés en utilisant deux ensembles de données: un ensemble de données synthétiques et une base de données réelle (images Sentinel-1 et mesures in situ d'humidité et de rugosité du sol). La base de données réelle a été collectée en Tunisie (Kairouan) et en France (Versailles).

International audience; The first LiDAR systems applied to aquatic environments were developed for underwater imaging by the \{US\} navy, This pioneer LiDAR system was developed by Radio Corporation of America (RCA) for conducting moreefficient military operations and improving the safety of divers. This primitive LiDAR was characterized by a blue-green laser with a laser pulse a pulse repetition smaller than 0.01 Hz. In the late 60s, LiDAR technologies underwent major progress due to the development of scanners and advanced photodetectors (Avalanche Photo Diode (APD) or Photomultiplier Tubes (PMT) type). It was during this period that detection of submerged targets based on LiDAR systems was first attempted. This capability was originally evaluated in the United States, Canada, Australia and Sweden and was later exapanded to other countries such as China and the Soviet Union.

International audience; This chapter introduces the main data analysis methods associated with topographic and bathymetric airborne LiDAR systems. Data delivered by these sensors can be of two types: the majority of commercial systems deliver three-dimensional (3D) point clouds (systems referred to as multiecho), whereas a limited number directly provides the whole laser signal backscattered by the Earth surface (systems referred to as full-waveform (FW)).

International audience; In this chapter, a brief overview of the LiDAR measurement used for Earth and space observation is first presented. This is subsequently followed by an overview of the LiDAR instrument, describing its various optical constituent elements. The LiDAR equation is then described with emphasis on its key parameters. Finally, the main causes of LiDAR error on surface observations are specified, with a particular emphasis on airborne or spaceborne measurements.

Chapitre 4; Fonctionnement des surfaces agricoles : apport de la télédétection

The main objective of this thesis is to understand the functioning of a semi-arid ecosystem by developing methodologies from combined optical and microwave satellite measurements in order to assess evapotranspiration and its seasonal dynamics in a semi-arid region (Kairouan plain). The retrieving of the latter requires a good description of the vegetation dynamics and monitoring the water content in the soil. For this purpose, an analysis of vegetation dynamics is made on the basis of the SPOT VEGETATION time series from 1998 to 2010. To understand the vegetation behavior along frequent periods of drought, fractal analysis is an appropriate tool to study the vegetation persistence. A new statistical index referred to VAI "Anomaly Vegetation Index" describing the state of vegetation water stress is proposed. This quantitative index can be used to describe at a monthly scale the state of vegetation. Several validation approaches are implemented to test the performance of this index that confirms its reliability. In terms of monitoring the soil water content, moisture products derived from ERS and ASCAT / Metop scatterometer are availables. These products are validated in our study using two different approaches. A statistical drought monitoring index is proposed from a long time series of moisture products that covers twenty years (from 1991 to 2010). The index proposed referred to MAI "Moisture Anomaly Index" is based on anomaly analysis of temporal variability of soil water content, estimated from ERS and ASCAT / Metop scatterometers. A comparative analysis with other drought indices, particularly SPI "Standardized Precipitation Index" is made and shows the performance of our index. This information derived from the two time series optical and microwave are then integrated into a simple and operational model FAO-56 (dual crop coefficient approach) for mapping at a daily scale the evapotranspiration at 1km resolution. A validation of this approach is generated by comparing the results with the outputs of a SVAT model: ISBA-A-gs.; L'objectif principal de cette thèse est de comprendre le fonctionnement d'un écosystème semi-aride, en développant des méthodologies permettant de combiner des mesures satellites optique et micro-onde et un modèle semi-empirique pour estimer l'évapotranspiration et sa dynamique saisonnière dans une région semi-aride (plaine de Kairouan). L'estimation de cette dernière nécessite une bonne description de la dynamique du couvert végétal et un suivi du stock d'eau dans le sol. Pour se faire, une analyse de la dynamique de la végétation est faite sur la base de la série temporelle SPOT VEGETATION de 1998 à 2010. Pour appréhender le comportement de la végétation face à des fréquentes périodes de sècheresse, une analyse fractale est developpée pour étudier la persistance du couvert végétal. Un nouvel indice statistique VAI " Vegetation Anomaly Index " décrivant l'état du stress hydrique de la végétation a été proposé. Cet indice quantitatif permet de décrire à l'échelle mensuelle l'état de la végétation. Plusieurs approches de validation sont mises en œuvre pour montrer la performance de cet indice. En termes de suivi du stock d'eau dans le sol, l'analyse est basée sur des produits d'humidité (IPF Université de Vienne) des diffusiomètres spatiaux ERS et ASCAT/METOP. Ces produits ont été validés sur notre site d'étude via deux approches différentes. Un indice de sécheresse a été proposé à partir de la longue série de produits d'humidité qui couvre vingt années (de 1991 à 2010). L'indice proposé MAI " Moisture Anomaly Index " est basé sur une analyse des anomalies des variabilités temporelles des stocks d'eau dans le sol, estimées par les satellites ERS et ASCAT/METOP. Une analyse comparative avec d'autres indices de sécheresse, particulièrement le SPI " Standardized Precipitation Index " est faite pour mettre en évidence la performance de cet indice. Ces informations tirées à partir des deux séries temporelles optiques et micro-ondes sont ensuite intégrées dans un modèle simple et opérationnel, le modèle FAO-56 (approche double coefficient culturale) pour la cartographie de l'évapotranspiration réelle journalière. Une validation de cette approche est proposée en confrontant les résultats avec des sorties d'un modèle SVAT : ISBA-A-gs.

In the context of sustainable development, soil and water resources management is a key issue from not only the environmental point of view, but also from a socioeconomic perspective. Soil moisture, roughness, composition, and slaking crusts are some key variables used to understand and model natural hazards, such as erosion, drought and floods. For agricultural bare soils (most subject to runoff), numerous studies have already shown the potential of C-band RADAR data for the mapping of soil moisture and roughness. However, the application of these methods in operational settings remained limited. In this context, , the first objective of this thesis was to analyse the sensitivity of X-band TerraSAR-X sensors to soil surface characteristics (SSC) at high spatial and temporal resolutions. Different TerraSAR-X configurations were evaluated and results were used to define the optimal instrumental configuration for the characterization of each SSC parameter. The comparison of TerraSAR-X sensor sensitivity with equivalent levels recorded with the C-band sensor showed that the TerraSAR-X sensor is undoubtedly the most suitable of the two when estimating and mapping soil moisture at a fine scale (50 m²). The second objective of this work was to develop a method to estimate and map soil moisture levels of agricultural bare soil. To achieve this goal, methods that are commonly used to retrieve soil moisture from C-band, have been tested on X-band data. The accuracy of soil moisture estimations using an empirical algorithm was determined, and validated successfully over numerous study sites. A mapping process based uniquely on TerraSAR-X data, both for bare soil detection and for the estimation of soil moisture content, was developed. This innovative chain of " automatic and autonomous" mapping processing steps should enable the utilization of TerraSAR-X data for the mapping of soil moisture levels in operational conditions.; Dans un contexte de développement durable, la gestion des sols et des ressources en eau est un enjeu primordial non seulement d'un point de vue environnemental mais aussi socio-économique. L'humidité, la rugosité, la composition et la structure du sol sont des variables clés pour la compréhension et la modélisation des catastrophes naturelles telles que l'érosion, la sécheresse ou les inondations. Pour des sols nus agricoles (très propices au ruissellement), de nombreuses études ont déjà montré le potentiel des données RADAR acquises en bande C pour la cartographie de l'humidité et la rugosité du sol. Cependant l'application de ces méthodes dans un cadre opérationnel était limitée. Dans ce contexte, les travaux de cette thèse présentent un premier volet sur l'analyse de la sensibilité aux états de surface (EDS) du sol du signal en bande X du capteur TerraSAR-X à très haute résolution spatiale et temporelle. Différentes configurations TerraSAR-X ont été analysées et les résultats ont permis de définir les configurations instrumentales optimales pour caractériser chaque paramètre d'EDS du sol. La comparaison de la sensibilité du capteur TerraSAR-X à celle des capteurs en bande C montre que le capteur TerraSAR-X est sans conteste le plus adapté pour estimer et cartographier l'humidité du sol à des échelles fines (50 m²). Le second volet était de développer une méthode permettant d'estimer et de cartographier l'humidité des sols nus agricoles. Dans ce but, les méthodes d'inversion généralement utilisées en bande C ont été testées sur les données en bande X. La précision sur les estimations d'humidité issues de l'algorithme d'inversion du signal TerraSAR-X a été déterminée et l'applicabilité de la méthode sur de nombreux sites d'étude a été testée avec succès. Une chaine de traitements cartographiques allant de la détection des sols nus à l'estimation de l'humidité et ne nécessitant qu'une seule image TerraSAR-X a été développée. Cette chaine innovante de traitements cartographiques " automatique et autonome " devrait permettre d'utiliser les données TerraSAR-X pour cartographier l'humidité du sol en mode opérationnel.

Radar remote sensing has shown great potential in the characterization of soil surface and hydrological processes. The knowledge of these parameters is of fundamental interest to quantify and predict the distribution of rainfall as well as modelling of the erosion of agricultural soils. Several models have been already developed but they still have limitations in understanding the behaviour of radar signal. The objective of this thesis is to provide improvements in backscattering modelling and description of agricultural bare soils using data from SAR and ground measurements. Using the analytical model of surface scattering IEM, we take into account a soil moisture profile by introducing a multi layered aspect. Taking into account constant moisture on the few centimetres of the surface is not realistic. We also take into account air pockets in the soil structure by redefining the dielectric constant and by introducing a compound air/ground. These developments allowed to improve IEM simulations and to better understand the behaviour of the radar signal and variations in the relationship between the backscattering coefficient and soil moisture. Finally, we perform a more realistic representation of agricultural soils including clods on the soil profiles. From an electromagnetic scattering numerical model based on the method of moments, we analyze the influence of these clods on the backscattering coefficient., La télédétection radar a déjà montré son fort potentiel dans la caractérisation des états de surface et des processus hydriques. La connaissance de ces paramètres est d'un intérêt fondamental pour mieux quantifier et prévoir la répartition des pluies ainsi que pour modéliser l'érosion des sols. Plusieurs modèles ont déjà été développés (empiriques, analytiques, numériques) mais présentent encore des limitations dans la compréhension du comportement du signal radar. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'apporter des améliorations dans la modélisation de la rétrodiffusion et la description des sols agricoles nus, à l'aide de mesures terrain et d'images radar SAR. Nous avons considéré un profil d'humidité en introduisant un aspect multicouche et utilisé le modèle IEM. Nous avons montré qu'une humidité constante sur les premiers centimètres de la surface ne reflète pas la réalité terrain. Nous avons ensuite pris en compte les poches d'air présentes dans la structuration du sol en redéfinissant la constante diélectrique par l'introduction d'un composé air/sol. Ces développements ont permis de contribuer à l'amélioration des résultats de la simulation, de mieux comprendre le comportement du signal radar et les variations du coefficient linéaire liant le coefficient de rétrodiffusion à l'humidité du sol. Enfin, nous avons effectué une représentation plus réaliste des sols agricoles en incluant des mottes de terre sur les profils. A partir d'un modèle de diffusion électromagnétique numérique, basé sur la méthode des moments, nous avons étudié leur influence sur le coefficient de rétrodiffusion.

International audience; Deux extensions de QGIS pour des applications en santé : GeoHealth et QuickOSM 7.1. Contexte de l'utilisation des SIG en santé et du développement d'extensions dédiées à la santé dans QGIS Les cartes et les analyses spatiales sont de plus en plus utilisées dans le domaine de la santé pour illustrer l'organisation spatio-temporelle des données et permettre un regard géographique sur les données sanitaires. Les systèmes d'information géographique (SIG), et plus généralement les outils de la géomatique, sont ainsi utilisés par les organisations de santé (locales ou internationales) pour informer sur la distribution des maladies, par les gestionnaires pour suivre et contrôler les épidémies, et par les médecins et les chercheurs pour comprendre les distributions des maladies. Les cartes et les analyses spatiales sont aujourd'hui régulièrement utilisées dans les publications scientifiques du domaine de la santé. Les grandes organisations comme l'Organisation mondiale de la santé, les ministères de la Santé de nombreux pays, des organismes de recherche, comme les Instituts Pasteur, se sont dotés de « cellules SIG » avec des géomaticiens ou des géographes de la santé pour réaliser ces tâches. Toutefois, beaucoup d'organismes n'ont pas les compétences en interne et souhaitent tout de même réaliser de telles analyses. De plus en plus de personnes du domaine de la santé se forment ainsi à la géomatique, mais n'en faisant usage que ponctuellement et avec des outils complexes, la mise en pratique reste concrètement difficile.
