Albinism is a group of genetic disorders characterized by general skin and retinal hypopigmentation. It is in most cases an autosomal recessive condition. Foveal hypoplasia (FH) is one of the main criteria for the diagnosis of albinism. The aim of this study was to analyze the macular profile of the parents of patients with albinism. This study included a case series of 27 patients with albinism seen in Rothschild Foundation between April 2017 and February 2020. Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCT angiography (OCT-A) were performed in every patient when possible and in every available parents. FH was graded according to Thomas' classification based on OCT. Next generation sequencing-based gene panel testing was performed in parents and children when a FH was detected on OCT in a parent. Twenty-seven patients with albinism were examined. Nine parents had FH based on the OCT B-scan (33%). In parents without FH based on the SD-OCT B-scan (67%), OCT-A showed a reduced avascular zone in the deep vascular plexus in 4 parents. Six parents carried variants that could explain their phenotype, including TYR R402Q hypomorphic alleles. • Detritivores are diverse animals which role in soil processes is difficult to predict. • We argue that detritivore faeces characteristics may be promising effect traits. • Two case studies show that faeces traits predict organic matter turnover. • This could unify groups of animals so far separated between soil- and litter-feeding. In the last decade, our understanding of plant litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation substantially improved but critical blind spots remain. Particularly, the role of detritivores, i.e. soil animals that feed on litter and soil, is poorly understood and notoriously missing from biogeochemical models. This major gap results from methodological difficulties to isolate their effect and from the astonishing diversity of detritivorous organisms with few common features, thereby hampering the identification of general patterns. In this viewpoint, we propose that the characteristics of their faeces can predict detritivore effects on soil processes related to organic matter turnover across the large detritivore diversity. Indeed, faeces are common to all detritivores, and a large part of organic matter is transformed into faeces in many ecosystems. Two recent studies presented here showed that faeces characteristics are powerful predictors of the fate and turnover of this transformed organic matter. We suggest that faeces characteristics, such as water-holding capacity, size and spatial organisation of the faecal pellets and of their constituting particles, particulate organic matter connectivity, as well as the characteristics of dissolved organic matter in faecal pellets, are promising 'effect traits'. By focusing on similar features rather than differences, this approach has the potential to break down barriers of this highly fragmented soil animal group, in particular between earthworms that are often studied as ecosystem engineers and classical litter transformers such as millipedes, woodlice, or snails. We discuss ways of tackling the complexity of using such traits, particularly regarding the composite determinism of faeces characteristics that are driven both by the detritivore identity and the ingested organic matter. Rigorous and hypothesis-based use of faeces characteristics as effect traits, including clear identification of studied processes, could allow integrating detritivores in our current understanding of organic matter turnover. To assess anatomical and functional outcomes after switching from dexamethasone implant (DEXi) to fluocinolone acetonide implant (FAci) in 113 diabetic macular edema eyes, a multicentric retrospective observational study was conducted. Seventy-five eyes (73.5%) were switched 1–8 weeks after their last DEXi. The mean best-corrected visual acuity improved to 59.8 letters at month 4 and remained stable during the follow-up. The mean central macular thickness (CMT) significantly decreased during the follow-up, with a minimum of 320.9 μm at month 3. The baseline CMT was higher in eyes that received the last DEXi >8 weeks versus <8 weeks before the first FAci (p < 0.021). After FAci injection, additional treatments were needed in 37 (32.7%) eyes. A longer diabetes duration (p = 0.009), a longer time between the last DEXi and the first FAci (p = 0.035), and a high baseline CMT (p = 0.003) were risk factors for additional treatments. The mean intraocular pressure was <19 mmHg at all timepoints, with no difference between eyes receiving the last DEXi ≤8 weeks or >8 weeks before the switch. Switching from DEXi to FAci in DME is effective and safe. A short time between the last DEXi and the first FAci reduced CMT fluctuations and the need for early additional treatments. Earthworms have potential to stabilize soil organic carbon (SOC), but the biophysical controls on SOC dynamics in earthworm casts and the SOC residence time in casts is poorly known. To this end, we aimed to investigate (1) the kinetics of SOC (de-) protection in earthworm casts deposited in a tropical environment and (2) changes in the spatial relationships between fresh particulate organic matter (POM) and pore architecture within casts. Our experimental approach was to espose casts produced by the anecic earthworm Amynthas adexilis to tropical temperature and rainfall by placing them in a woodland in northern Vietnam. For 400 d, we monitored the dynamics of cast microstructures using X-ray micro-computed tomography and compared them to those of the surrounding soil aggregates (control). We also measured potential CO 2 emissions of the same samples in a laboratory incubation. As expected, recently egested casts had higher SOC (1.9-fold) and POM volumes (7-fold) than aggregates, whereas their total imaged porosity was 4 times less. The SOC of casts was more labile than SOC of aggregates, as casts had 3 times more potentially mineralizable SOC. By 72 d of exposure to field conditions, the casts and aggregates had similar potential SOC mineralization, indicating that they had developed a similar level of SOC protection. Temporal changes in SOC mineralization rates were related to variations in POM volume, particularly those connected to the outside of the cast. After 400 d of exposure, casts had still greater POM volumes (2.5-fold) and higher SOC contents (1.6-fold) but similar total imaged porosity and SOC stability as aggregates. In conclusion, these results clearly indicated the direct involvement of earthworms in SOC stabilization through their impact on POM and pore spatial arrangements, which may have led to prolonged SOC sequestration for > 400 d. • Soil organic C protection in fresh earthworm casts became apparent after 72 d. • Stabilization occurred within pores not connected to the outside of aggregates. • Physical protection led to soil organic C sequestration in casts for > 400 d. Purpose: To report visual and anatomical outcomes and determine predictors of good visual acuity (VA) recovery after macula‐off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RD). Methods: Prospective multicentre study including 115 eyes from 115 patients successfully operated on for RD, with assessment of VA and spectral‐domain optical coherence tomography (SD‐OCT) macular images at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after surgery. Results: Over the follow‐up period, VA significantly improved from median [IQR] 62 [46; 72] ETDRS letters at 1 month to 75 [67; 80] ETDRS letters at 12 months (p < 0.001) with a concomitant decreased number of eyes with any SD‐OCT lesions (p < 0.001). The presence of subretinal fluid (SRF) significantly decreased (p < 0.001), as did the number of photoreceptor (PR) layer lesions (p = 0.04). At 12 months, lesions in the PR layer and poor VA recovery were significantly associated with a longer time to surgery (p = 0.007 and p < 0.001, respectively). The rate of patients without PR lesions increased from 40.9% at 1 month to 60.0% at 6 months and 73.9% at 12 months (p < 0.001). The incidence of epiretinal membrane (ERM) significantly increased (p < 0.001), while cystoid macular oedema (CME) remained stable over time. Visual acuity (VA) at 3 months postoperatively was a good reflection of final VA recovery (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Visual acuity (VA) improved in parallel with the decreasing number of eyes with SD‐OCT lesions after macula‐off rhegmatogenous RD. Purpose: To compare the risk of haemorrhagic complications in elective macular surgery between patients with no antithrombotic (AT) treatment (defined as patients with no history of AT therapy or who discontinued AT therapy) and patients who continued AT treatment during the surgery. Methods: E‐case report forms were prospectively recorded in a database before vitreoretinal surgery and 1 month after. Data on patient characteristics, surgical techniques, haemorrhagic complications and antithrombotic status were collected. Patients with retinal detachment, proliferative diabetic retinopathy and previous retinal haemorrhage were excluded. Results: A total of 748 procedures (single procedure in one eye per patient) were performed between January and May 2019. Among them, 202 patients (27.0%) were treated with antithrombotic therapy at the time of surgery: 19.5% with antiplatelet agents (n = 146), 6.3% with anticoagulants (n = 47) including 3.2% (n = 24) patients treated with novel oral anticoagulants, 0.8% (n = 6) with anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents, and 0.4% (n = 3) with heparin. Overall, 92 patients (12.3%) developed one or more haemorrhagic complications, of which 63 (11.5%) and 29 (14.4%) were in the non‐AT and AT group, respectively. The multivariate logistic regression model showed no difference between AT treatment groups regarding ocular bleeding complications (odds ratio [OR] 1.2, 95% confidence interval (CI) [0.7–2.2], p = 0.54). Conclusion: No cases of uncontrolled or severe perioperative haemorrhage in patients continuing antithrombotic agents were reported in this selected population. Clay-sized soil minerals are known to protect organic carbon (OC) from mineralisation by formation of organo-mineral associations limiting its availability to microorganisms. The impact of soil fauna on these processes is poorly known. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of earthworms on organic matter (OM) decomposition and association with minerals during a laboratory experiment. We used a model system consisting of fresh OM incubated with and without epigeic earthworms (Eisenia andrei and foetida) in presence of different types and amounts of phyllosilicates (kaolinite, montmorillonite) and an iron oxide (goethite) and combinations of these minerals. Our experimental setup included a high OM:mineral ratio to represent the soil-litter interphase. We monitored OC mineralisation during 196 days. Additionally, we investigated physicochemical parameters and chemical OM characteristics of decomposition products by determination of water-soluble OC (WSOC) and acquisition of solid-state 13C NMR spectra. We also analysed microscale organisation of the organo-mineral associations produced with and without earthworms by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Earthworms enhanced OC mineralisation in all treatments. They also led to greater reductions of OC emissions in the presence of minerals as compared to the mineral-free control, depending on the type and amount of minerals added. The presence of earthworms affected microbial biomass, the concentration of WSOC and increased the contribution of aromatic compounds to OM decomposition products. Microscale analyses by TEM showed that earthworms favoured association of minerals with partly degraded OM along with completely degraded material, while in absence of earthworms only completely degraded OM was associated with minerals. We conclude that earthworms impact OM decomposition through (1) their effect on microbial biomass and the physicochemical parameters of microbial habitat and (2) the formation of OM associations by changing the OM types associated to minerals and possibly by creating closer association of partly degraded OM and iron oxides. Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is a common retinal disease. Recent works mentioned spontaneous retinal arterial pulsations (SRAPs) as a feature of some CRVOs. This is a retrospective study on patients presenting with CRVO who were followed up for at least 6 months. The objective was to identify SRAP in the acute phase of the disease and determine their relationship with patients' characteristics and visual prognosis. A 10-second infrared film centered on the optic disc was recorded within a month of the onset of symptoms, and SRAPs were detected in two-thirds of the cases. Patients with SRAP were significantly younger than those without SRAP. Mean central macular thickness was significantly higher in the absence of SRAP, which was translated into a more severe macular edema; however, this difference faded with time. BCVA tended to be higher in the presence of SRAP at the 6-month follow-up when adjusted to baseline. This study demonstrates that SRAPs are a frequent finding, easily detected by infrared fundus video recording, and associated with a younger age and lesser macular edema. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To evaluate the timing and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) features of diabetic macular oedema (DME) recurrence according to baseline OCT patterns in patients treated with dexamethasone implant (DEX-I). Methods: This is a retrospective observational study (72 eyes/65 patients). Best-corrected visual acuity, timing of DME recurrence, and SD-OCT pattern [intraretinal cysts (IRC), IRC plus subretinal fluid (mixed), external limiting membrane (ELM), ellipsoid (IS/OS) layer integrity] were assessed at baseline and monthly until first DME recurrence. Results: Forty-two (58.3%) and 30 (41.6%) DME eyes had an IRC and mixed DME pattern at baseline, respectively. Twenty-four out of thirty mixed eyes (80%) relapsed without subretinal fluid. At baseline, mixed eyes showed similar changes in ELM and IS/OS (60 and 76.6% of eyes, respectively) versus IRC eyes (42.8 and 80.9% of eyes). After DME recurrence, more mixed eyes at baseline showed ELM and IS/OS changes (63.3 and 86.6%) than IRC eyes (50 and 76.2%). 33.3% of mixed eyes had DME recurrence at ≥ 6 months from first DEX-I implant versus 19% of IRC eyes. Conclusions: Mixed DME eyes were treated with DEX-I relapse later and more frequently without subretinal fluid than IRC eyes. Background: The epiretinal membrane (ERM) is a degenerative condition associated with age, which can cause loss of vision and/or metamorphopsia. The treatment of symptomatic ERM involves surgical removal including a vitrectomy followed by peeling of the ERM using a microforceps. As the internal limiting membrane (ILM) is adherent to the ERM, it is sometimes removed with it (spontaneous peeling). If ILM remains in place, it can be removed to reduce ERM recurrence. However, it is important to clarify the safety of ILM peeling, while it increases surgical risks and cause histological disorganization of the retina that can lead to microscotomas, may be responsible for definitive visual discomfort.Methods: PEELING is a prospective, randomized, controlled, single-blind, and multicentered trial with two parallel arms. This study investigates the benefit/risk ratio of active ILM peeling among individuals undergoing ERM surgery without spontaneous ILM peeling. Randomization is done in the operating room after ERM removal if ILM remains in place. After randomization, the two groups-"active peeling of the ILM" and "no peeling of the ILM"-are compared during a total of three follow-up visits scheduled at month 1, month 6, and month 12. Primary endpoint is the difference in microscotomas before surgery and 6 months after surgery. Patients with spontaneous peeling are not randomized and are included in the ancillary study with the same follow-up visits and the same examinations as the principal study. Relevant inclusion criteria involve individuals aged > 18 years living with idiopathic symptomatic ERM, including pseudophakic patients with transparent posterior capsule or open capsule or lensed patients with age-related cataracts. The calculated sample size corresponds to 53 randomized eyes (one eye/patient) per arm that means 106 randomized eyes (106 randomized patients) in total and a maximum of 222 included patients (116 spontaneous peeling).Discussion: ILM peeling is often practiced in ERM surgery to reduce ERM recurrence. It does not impair postoperative visual acuity, but it increases the surgical risks and causes anatomical damages. If active ILM peeling is significantly associated with more microscotomas, it may contraindicate the ILM peeling during primitive idiopathic ERM surgery.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT02146144. Purpose: To evaluate the surgical technique for subretinal implantation of two sizes of PRIMA photovoltaic wireless microchip in two animal models, and refine these surgical procedures for human trials. Methods: Cats and Macaca fascicularis primates with healthy retina underwent vitrectomy surgery and were implanted with subretinal wireless photovoltaic microchip at the macula/central retina. The 1.5mm PRIMA chip was initially studied in feline eyes. PRIMA implant (2mm,1.5mm sizes) arrays were studied in primates. Feasibility of subretinal chip implantation was evaluated with a newly-developed surgical technique, with surgical complications and adverse events recorded. Results: The 1.5mm implant was placed in the central retina of 11 feline eyes, with implantation duration 43–106 days. The 1.5mm implant was correctly positioned into central macula of 11 primate eyes, with follow-up periods of minimum 6 weeks (n = 11), 2 years (n = 2), and one eye for 3 years. One primate eye underwent multi-chip 1.5mm implantation using two 1.5mm chips. The 2mm implant was delivered to 4 primate eyes. Optical coherence tomography confirmed correct surgical placement of photovoltaic arrays in the subretinal space in all 26 eyes. Intraoperative complications in primate eyes included retinal tear, macular hole, retinal detachment, and vitreous hemorrhage that resolved spontaneously. Postoperatively, there was no case of significant ocular inflammation in the 1.5mm implant group. Conclusions: We report subretinal implantation of 1.5mm and 2mm photovoltaic arrays in the central retina of feline and central macula of primate eyes with a low rate of device-related complications. Refractory ceramic fibers (RCF) have been extensively used for insulation in condensing boilers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the respiratory exposure to these fibers among maintenance heating technicians. We first created a working group (Carsat Brittany and Finistère Occupational Health Services) and carried out a sampling strategy. Atmospheric measurements were done during work tasks, and filterswere analyzed by phase contrast microscopy (PCM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in French approved laboratories. Four companies were included for a total of 15 days of work. During those 15 workdays, 12 SEM and 21 PCM samples were taken and analyzed. The phase contrast microscopy and SEM average results were 0.04 and 0.004 fibers/cm3, respectively. In conclusion, the study confirms heating technician RCF respiratory exposure during maintenance work for both condensation gas boilers and atmospheric boilers. This paper describes the first performance tests and characterization of the detection chain of the Micro-channel X-ray Telescope (MXT), one of the instruments on board the French-Chinese mission SVOM for the study of Gamma-Ray Bursts. The MXT detector consists of a back-illuminated 450 µm -thick fully-depleted frame-store silicon pnCCD, operating in the 0. 2 − 10 keV energy range. Featuring an imaging area of ≈ 4 cm 2 , the device is read out in parallel by two CAMEX ASICs and is powered and controlled by its dedicated Front-End Electronics. A complete setup based on a cryostat and a multi-energy X-ray source have been designed for the characterization of the detection chain. The tests, performed at ≈ −65 ° C , demonstrate a spectral resolution of (82 ± 2) eV at 1.5 keV as well as a < 200 eV low-level threshold.
