The phase stabilities and structural and electronic properties of three zinc-based oxide alloy systems (Ca(x)Zn(1-x)O, Cd(x)Zn(1-x)O and Mg(x)Zn(1-x)O) are studied by first-principle methods. We examine all alloy configurations in three 16-atom supercells (1 × 1 × 2 B1 phase structure, 2 × 2 × 1 and 2 × 1 × 2 B4 phase structures) and utilize symmetry of the bulk materials to reduce the amount of calculation. Stereocontrolled intramolecular aziridination of the glycal-derived sulfamates offers a highly efficient strategy to divergently prepare aminoglycosides. Rhodium-catalyzed nitrogen-atom transfer to C==C bonds formed semistable aziridines, which were subjected to various nucleophiles (C, O, S, and N) to give cyclic sulfamate-containing aminosugar derivatives selectively. The second nucleophilic displacement of sulfonyloxy moieties of [1,2,3]-oxathiazepane-2,2- dioxides allows straightforward access to aminoglycosides with selective alpha- or beta-linkages. This approach is operationally simple, complements existing methods, and is a versatile protocol for the synthesis of polyfunctionalized amino sugars. In addition, the mechanism of the rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular aziridination of glycals and its ring-opening reaction was extensively studied by using DFT calculations.

The energetics and structure of the protonated water hexamer (H2O)6H+ have been examined employing both model potentials and high-level ab initio methods. To select candidate structures for this cluster, Parallel-Tempering and the OSS2 potential were used as devices to complement the set of stationary points previously optimized by Hodges and Wales, Chem. Phys. Lett., 2000, 324, 279. Structures of these local minima were successively re-optimized using OSS3, B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ, and MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ, the latter providing a reference to benchmark the performance of the empirical models and B3LYP method. We found that both OSS2 and OSS3 require a re-parameterization to adequately describe the energetics of some isomers. Zero point energy was found to be important in defining the relative stability of the optimized isomers. The effect of the anharmonicity on the vibrational ground state of (H2O)6H+ was also examined by means of diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and the OSS3 potential, and we found that it accounts for a decrease in total energy of roughly 0-4.4 mE(h). This is a significant effect on the energetics considering that many isomers are nearly degenerate. Including the anharmonic corrections computed with DMC, the branched species were found to be the most stable isomers. The height of the barriers separating a cage or cyclic isomer from a branched one was found to vary from 1.5 to 5.8 mE(h).

The existence of an ice Ih/XI proton-ordering transition to a low-temperature ferroelectric phase has sparked considerable debate in the literature. Electronic density functional theory calculations, extended using graph invariants, confirm that a transition to a low-temperature ferroelectric phase should occur. The predicted transition at 98 K is in qualitative agreement with the observed transition at 72 K, and the low-temperature phase is the ferroelectric phase determined in diffraction experiments. The theoretical methods used to predict the phase transition are validated by comparing their prediction to the well-characterized ice VII/VIII proton-ordering transition.

The structure of protonated water clusters H+(H2O)n (n=5-22) are examined by two Monte Carlo methods in conjunction with the OSS2 potential [L. Ojamae, I. Shavitt, and S. J. Singer J. Chem. Phys. 109, 5547 (1998)]. The basin-hopping method is employed to explore the OSS2 potential energy surface and to locate low-energy structures. The topology of the "global minimum," the most stable low-energy structure, changes from single ring to multiple ring to polyhedral cage as the cluster size grows. The temperature dependence of the cluster geometry is examined by carrying out parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations. Over the temperature range we studied (25-330 K), all water clusters undergo significant structural changes. The trends are treelike structures dominating at high temperature and single-ring structures appearing in slightly lower temperatures. For n> or =7, an additional transition from single ring to multiple rings appears as the temperature decreases. Only for n> or =16 do polyhedral structures dominate the lowest temperature range. Our results indicate very dynamic structural changes at temperature range relevant to atmospheric chemistry and current experiments. The structures and properties of medium-sized protonated clusters in this temperature range are far from their global minimum cousins.
