Ground deformation can cause serious environmental issues such as infrastructure damage, ground compaction, and reducing the ground capacity to store water. Mashhad, as one of the largest and most populated cities in the Middle East, has been suffering from extreme subsidence. In the last decade, some researchers have been interested in measuring land subsidence rates in the Mashhad valley by InSAR techniques. However, most of those studies were based on inaccurate measurements introducing uncertainties in the resulting subsidence rates. These researches used a small number of EnviSat data with long perpendicular and inhomogeneous temporal baseline. This paper seeks to determine the subsidence rate in urban areas of Mashhad in recent years, the threat that was neglected by the city managers and decision-makers. For this purpose, the Persistent Scatterer InSAR technique was applied in the study area using two time-series of descending and ascending Sentinel-1A acquisitions between 2014 and 2017. The results demonstrated the maximum line-of-sight deformation rate of 14.6 cm/year and maximum vertical deformation (subsidence) rate about 19.1 cm/year which could have irreversible consequences. The results were assessed and validated using piezometric data, GPS stations, and geotechnical properties. This assessment confirms that the main reason for subsidence in the interested area is groundwater over-extraction. Also, investigation of geotechnical properties shows that thick fine-grained layers in the northwest of the city could strongly affect the results. At the end of this paper, a new simplified method was proposed to estimate specific storage in special cases to predict the subsidence rate.

Classification based on °API gravity is very important to estimate the parameters related to the extraction, purification, toxicity, and pricing of crude oils. Spectroscopy methods show some advantages over ASTM and API methods for crude oil analysis. The attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometric methods has been applied as a quick and non-destructive method for crude oil analysis. In this work, a new analytical method using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy associated with chemometric methods were proposed for adressing regression and classification tasks for crude oils analysis based on °API gravity values. The designed methods are rapid, economic, and nondestructive ways in production process of oil industry. The spectral data were used for estimation of °API gravity using two approaches according to PLS-R and SVM-R algorithm, separately. The ATR-FTIR spectral data were also analyzed by classification method using the partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) for crude oil classification. The samples were classified into three classes based on their °API gravity values. The SVM-R model showed better results than PLS-R for °API gravity values using the F-test at 95% of confidence. Objectives: To evaluate whether combining stability and discriminability criteria in building radiomic classifiers will improve the prognosis of cancer recurrence in early stage non-small cell lung cancer on non-contrast computer tomography (CT)., Materials and Methods: CT scans of 610 patients with early stage (IA, IB, IIA) NSCLC from four independent cohorts were evaluated. A total of 350 patients from Cleveland Clinic Foundation and University of Pennsylvania were divided into two equal sets for training (D 1 ) and validation set (D 2 ). 80 patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas Lung Adenocarcinoma and Squamous Cell Carcinoma and 195 patients from The Cancer Imaging Archive, were used as independent second (D 3 ) and third (D 4 ) validation sets. A linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier was built based on the most stable and discriminate features. In addition, a radiomic risk score (RRS) was generated by using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator, Cox regression model to predict time to progression (TTP) following surgery., Results: A feature selection strategy focusing on both feature discriminability and stability resulted in the classifier having a higher discriminability on validation datasets compared to the discriminability alone criteria in discriminating cancer recurrence (D 2 , AUC of 0.75 vs. 0.65; D 3 , 0.74 vs. 0.62; D 4 , 0.76 vs. 0.63). Multiple sclerosis is immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system characterized by demyelination in axons. IFN-β is first-line treatment of MS. Biomarkers are needed for early prediction of responders and non-responders to therapy in the first month of treatment to avoid further disabilities. In this study, we analyzed the expression level of miR-504 and miR-711 in 52 IFN-β responder patients in comparison to 53 non-responders. In the next step, the in-silico analysis was used to enrich related signaling pathways. The expression level of miR-504 was significantly higher in patients who respond to IFN-β therapy, compared with non-responders and we obtain related statistically significant KEGG molecular signaling pathways. The NH 3 -TPD analysis is a costly and tedious method to determine zeolites acidity. Thus, to do so, FTIR spectroscopy was quantitatively used as a fast and cost-effectively method. Back-propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN) was used for the analysis of multivariate base on the characteristic absorbance of 11 zeolite samples after metal substitution in the ~3612 cm -1 region. The successive projection algorithm (SPA) was conducted for the uninformative variable elimination and feature selection strategies. The effect of pre-processing methods (e.g. MC and MSC) was examined. It is observed after using MSC for minimizing the light scattering effect and signal-to-noise correction, the minimum mean squared error (MSE) value of the testing set data reduced from 5.36 × 10 -2 to 2.19 × 10 -4 and R tot increases from 0.91 to 0.99. Also, the results of nonparametric Wilcoxon t-test and Sign test methods also confirmed that there is no clear difference between the zeolite acidity obtained by two conventional method and the proposed method., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Introduction : The statistical quality of many trial-based economic evaluations is poor. When conducting trial-based economic evaluations, researchers often turn to national pharmacoeconomic guidelines for guidance. Therefore, this study reviewed which recommendations are currently given by national pharmacoeconomic guidelines on the statistical analysis of trial-based economic evaluations. Areas covered : 40 national pharmacoeconomic guidelines were identified. Data were extracted on the guidelines' recommendations on how to deal with baseline imbalances, skewed costs, correlated costs and effects, clustering of data, longitudinal data, and missing data in trial-based economic evaluations. Four guidelines (10%) were found to include recommendations on how to deal with baseline imbalances, five (13%) on how to deal with skewed costs, and seven (18%) on how to deal with missing data. Recommendations were very general in nature and recommendations on dealing with correlated costs and effects, clustering of data, and longitudinal data were lacking. Expert opinion : Current national pharmacoeconomic guidelines provide little to no guidance on how to deal with the statistical challenges to trial-based economic evaluations. Since the use of suboptimal statistical methods may lead to biased results, and, therefore, possibly to a waste of scarce resources, national agencies are advised to include more statistical guidance in their pharmacoeconomic guidelines.

No predictive biomarkers can robustly identify patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who will benefit from immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapies. Here, in a machine learning setting, we compared changes ("delta") in the radiomic texture (DelRADx) of CT patterns both within and outside tumor nodules before and after two to three cycles of ICI therapy. We found that DelRADx patterns could predict response to ICI therapy and overall survival (OS) for patients with NSCLC. We retrospectively analyzed data acquired from 139 patients with NSCLC at two institutions, who were divided into a discovery set (D 1 = 50) and two independent validation sets (D 2 = 62, D 3 = 27). Intranodular and perinodular texture descriptors were extracted, and the relative differences were computed. A linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier was trained with 8 DelRADx features to predict RECIST-derived response. Association of delta-radiomic risk score (DRS) with OS was determined. The association of DelRADx features with tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) density on the diagnostic biopsies ( n = 36) was also evaluated. The LDA classifier yielded an AUC of 0.88 ± 0.08 in distinguishing responders from nonresponders in D 1 , and 0.85 and 0.81 in D 2 and D 3 DRS was associated with OS [HR: 1.64; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.22-2.21; P = 0.0011; C-index = 0.72). Peritumoral Gabor features were associated with the density of TILs on diagnostic biopsy samples. Objective: The use of a neoadjuvant chemoradiation followed by surgery in patients with stage IIIA NSCLC is controversial and the benefit of surgery is limited. There are currently no clinically validated biomarkers to select patients for such an approach. In this study we evaluate computed tomography (CT) derived intratumoral and peritumoral texture and nodule shape features in their ability to predict major pathological response (MPR). MPR being defined as ≤10% of residual viable tumor, assessed at the time of surgery., Material and Methods: Ninety patients with stage III NSCLC treated with chemoradiation prior to surgical resection were selected. The patients were divided randomly into two equal sets, one for training and one for independent testing. The radiomic texture and shape features were extracted from within the nodule (intra) and from the parenchymal regions immediately surrounding the nodule (peritumoral). A univariate regression analysis was performed on the image and clinicopathologic variables and then included into a multivariable logistic regression (MLR) for binary outcome prediction of MPR. The radiomic signature risk-score was generated by using a multivariate Cox regression model and association of the signature with OS and DFS was also evaluated., Results: Thirteen stable and predictive intratumoral and peritumoral radiomic texture features were found to be predictive of MPR. The MLR classifier yielded an AUC of 0.90 ± 0.025 within the training set and a corresponding AUC = 0.86 in prediction of MPR within the test set. The radiomic signature was also significantly associated with OS (HR = 11.18, 95% CI = 3.17, 44.1; p-value = 0.008) and DFS (HR = 2.78, 95% CI = 1.11, 4.12; p-value = 0.0042) in the testing set., Conclusion: Texture features extracted within and around the lung tumor on CT images appears to be associated with the likelihood of MPR, OS and DFS to chemoradiation., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Background: Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIB (MPS IIIB) (Sanfilippo Syndrome Type B; OMIM 252920) is an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder caused by mutations in the NAGLU gene which encode lysosomal enzyme N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, involved in degradation of complex polysaccharide, heparan sulfate. The disease is characterized by progressive cognitive decline and behavioral difficulties and motor function retardation., Materials & Methods: In this study, targeted exome sequencing was used in consanguineous parent (mother) of a deceased child with clinical diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis. Sanger sequencing was performed to confirm the candidate pathogenic variants in extended family members and segregation analysis. In silico pathogenicity assessment of detected variant using multiple computational predictive tools were performed. Computational docking using the Molegro Virtual Docker (MVD) 6.0.1 software applied to evaluate affinity binding of altered protein for its ligand, N-Acetyl-D-Glucosamine. Moreover, with I-TASSER software functional alterations between wild and mutant proteins evaluated., Results: We identified a novel heterozygote deletion variant (c.1294-1304 del CTCTTCCCCAA, p.432LeufsX25) in the NAGLU gene. The variant was classified as pathogenic based on the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics guideline. Computational docking with the Molegro Virtual Docker (MVD) 6.0.1 software confirmed different affinity binding of truncated protein for its ligand. Purpose: In recent years, endoscopic subureteral injection has gained popularity as a therapeutic alternative to open surgery because of its high success rates and low morbidity. We compared the success and complication rates of Polyacrylate polyalcohol copolymer (PPC) and Dextranomer/Hyaluronic acid (Dx/HA) in the endoscopic treatment of VUR., Materials & Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the patients who underwent endoscopic correction of their VUR by subureteric injection of PPC or Dx/HA from Jan 2010 to April 2016. The injection technique was STING (subureteric), distal HIT (intraureteric), and double HIT according the hydrodistention (HD) grade. The success rate, injection technique, injection volume, VUR grade, and obstruction rate were evaluated and compared between two groups., Results: 107 renal refluxing units (RRU) with a mean age 55.23±36.58 months and 64 RRU with a mean age 52.13±31.66 months were treated in Dx/HA and PPC groups, respectively. The PPC group showed a more successful outcome in comparison to the Dx/HA group (92.2% versus 75.7% of the RRU with P value<0.001) at 3 months follow up. The injection technique was not significantly different between two groups. In PPC group the success rate was decreased significantly with increasing reflux grade but this reduction was not statistically significant in Dx/HA group. The injected volume was significantly more in PPC group; in addition, there was statistically significant correlation between injected volume of the bulking agent and obstruction rate. However, the obstruction rate did not establish significant difference between the two groups (P value=0.83), however it was earlier in Vantris (4 months versus 22 months)., Conclusions: Our investigation approved PPC as a more effective material, regardless of other confounding variables such as reflux grade, learning cure, and technique of injection, in endoscopic treatment of VUR. In addition, the other remarkable point is this effectiveness is not accompanied by more post-operation obstruction.

Process Analytical Technology means at-line collection of analytical information from the process when the reaction is in progress. Obtained information enables process engineers to better control the Critical Process Parameters and direct the reaction to desirable routs. Near-infrared spectroscopy due to its analytical features, as well as the high capability of automation, versatile sampling and spectral acquisition methods is a useful tool in process monitoring when coupled to chemometrics. The Multiple Scatter Correction preprocessing technique and Alternative Least Square method can extract spectral and concentration information of a reaction mixture simultaneously, were employed pairing with fiber optic Near-Infrared spectroscopy in 1000-2250 nm spectral region was employed to extract the analytical information from the biodiesel production process. The obtained output demonstrated appropriate results about the concentration and type of components during the process. Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is among the leading causes of cancer related death. Despite of extensive efforts in identifying valid cancer prognostic biomarkers, only a very small number of markers have been identified. Several genetic variants in the 9p21 region have been identified that are associated with the risk of multiple cancers. Here, we explored the association of two genetic variants in the 9p21 region, CDKN2A/B, rs10811661, and rs1333049 for the first time in 273 subjects with, or without ESCC. We observed that the patients with ESCC had a higher frequency of a TT genotype for rs10811661 than individuals in the control group, and this polymorphism was also associated with tumor size. Moreover, a CC genotype for the rs1333049 polymorphism was associated with a reduced overall survival (OS) of patients with ESCC. In particular, patients with a CC (rs1333049) genotype had a significantly shorter OS (CC genotype: 34.5 ± 8.9 months vs. CG+GG: 47.7 ± 5.9 months; p value = 0.03). We have also shown the association of a novel genetic variant in CDKN2B gene with clinical outcome of patients with ESCC. Purpose: To identify the role of radiomics texture features both within and outside the nodule in predicting (a) time to progression (TTP) and overall survival (OS) as well as (b) response to chemotherapy in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)., Materials and Methods: Data in a total of 125 patients who had been treated with pemetrexed-based platinum doublet chemotherapy at Cleveland Clinic were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided randomly into two sets with the constraint that there were an equal number of responders and nonresponders in the training set. The training set comprised 53 patients with NSCLC, and the validation set comprised 72 patients. A machine learning classifier trained with radiomic texture features extracted from intra- and peritumoral regions of non-contrast-enhanced CT images was used to predict response to chemotherapy. The radiomic risk-score signature was generated by using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator with the Cox regression model; association of the radiomic signature with TTP and OS was also evaluated., Results: A combination of radiomic features in conjunction with a quadratic discriminant analysis classifier yielded a mean maximum area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.82 ± 0.09 (standard deviation) in the training set and a corresponding AUC of 0.77 in the independent testing set. The radiomics signature was also significantly associated with TTP (hazard ratio [HR], 2.8; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.95, 4.00; P < .0001) and OS (HR, 2.35; 95% CI: 1.41, 3.94; P = .0011). Additionally, decision curve analysis demonstrated that in terms of clinical usefulness, the radiomics signature had a higher overall net benefit in prediction of high-risk patients to receive treatment than the clinicopathologic measurements., Conclusion: This study suggests that radiomic texture features extracted from within and around the nodule on baseline CT scans are (a) predictive of response to chemotherapy and (b) associated with TTP and OS for patients with NSCLC.© RSNA, 2019 Supplemental material is available for this article., (2019 by the Radiological Society of North America, Inc.)

Purpose To evaluate ability of radiomic (computer-extracted imaging) features to distinguish non-small cell lung cancer adenocarcinomas from granulomas at noncontrast CT. Materials and Methods For this retrospective study, screening or standard diagnostic noncontrast CT images were collected for 290 patients (mean age, 68 years; range, 18-92 years; 125 men [mean age, 67 years; range, 18-90 years] and 165 women [mean age, 68 years; range, 33-92 years]) from two institutions between 2007 and 2013. Histopathologic analysis was available for one nodule per patient. Corresponding nodule of interest was identified on axial CT images by a radiologist with manual annotation. Nodule shape, wavelet (Gabor), and texture-based (Haralick and Laws energy) features were extracted from intra- and perinodular regions. Features were pruned to train machine learning classifiers with 145 patients. In a test set of 145 patients, classifier results were compared against a convolutional neural network (CNN) and diagnostic readings of two radiologists. Results Support vector machine classifier with intranodular radiomic features achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.75 on the test set. Combining radiomics of intranodular with perinodular regions improved the AUC to 0.80. On the same test set, CNN resulted in an AUC of 0.76. Radiologist readers achieved AUCs of 0.61 and 0.60, respectively. Conclusion Radiomic features from intranodular and perinodular regions of nodules can distinguish non-small cell lung cancer adenocarcinomas from benign granulomas at noncontrast CT. © RSNA, 2018 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Electrospinning is a straightforward, cost-effective, and versatile technique for fabrication of polymeric micro/nanofibers with tunable structural properties. Controlling the size, shape, and spatial orientation of the electrospun fibers is crucial for utilization in drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. In this study, for the first time, we systematically investigate the effect of processing parameters, including voltage, syringe needle gauge, angular velocity of rotating wheel, syringe-collector distance, and flow rate on the size and alignment of electrospun PLGA fibers. Optimizing these parameters enabled us to produce highly aligned and monodisperse PLGA fibers (spatial orientation> 99% and coefficient of variation< 0.5). To assess the effect of fiber alignment on the release of encapsulated drugs from these fibers, we incorporated dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory drug, within highly-aligned and randomly-oriented fibers with comparable diameters (~0.87 μm) and compared their release profiles. In-vitro release studies revealed that the aligned fibers had less burst release (~10.8% in 24 hr) and more sustained release (~8.8% average rate of change for 24 days) compared to the random fibers. Finally, the degradation modes of the aligned and random fibers after 25 days incubation were characterized and compared. Cystinuria is an autosomal recessive defect in reabsorptive transport of cystine and the dibasic amino acids ornithine, arginine, and lysine from renal tubule and small intestine. Mutations in two genes: SLC3A1, encoding the heavy chain rbAT of the renal cystine transport system and SLC7A9, the gene of its light chain b 0, + AT have a crucial role in the diseases. In our previous studies from Iranian populations with Cystinuria totally six and eleven novel mutations respectively identified in SLC3A1 and SLC7A9 genes. In this study, we conducted an in silico functional analysis to explore the possible association between these genetic mutations and Cystinuria. MutationTaster, PolyPhen-2, PANTHER, FATHMM. PhDSNP and MutPred was applied to predict the degree of pathogenicity for the missense mutations. Furthermore, Residue Interaction Network (RIN) and Intron variant analyses was performed using Cytoscape and Human Slicing Finder softwares. These genetic variants can provide a better understanding of genotype-phenotype relationships in patients with Cystinuria. In the future, the findings may also facilitate the development of new molecular diagnostic markers for the diseases.

Objective: Prostaglandin I2 receptor plays a major physiologic role in the relaxation of arterial smooth muscle and vasodilation and possibly during migraine attacks. Therefore, in this study, the coding and noncoding exons and exon-intron boundaries of Prostaglandin I2 receptor gene were examined in patients with migraine headache and healthy controls and the potential effects of identified single nucleotide variations were evaluated using direct PCR-sequencing and in silico analysis. Method : In this study, the peripheral blood samples of 50 patients and 50 controls were examined to find any mutation in coding and noncoding exons and exon-intron boundaries of PTGIR gene. DNA was extracted and all the samples were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced. Results: In this study, the patients had a mean age of 35.235 ± 10.99 years (range, 9-60 yrs.), and female to male ratio was 4:1 in this group. The controls had a mean age of 35.058 ± 11.116 years (range, 8-59 yrs.), and female to male ratio was 3.7:1.3 in this group. Two patients had mutations in exon 2. The first mutation was located in exon 2 (at amino acid position 251) of PTGIR gene at nucleotide position c.866A > T, a synonymous variant described previously in the database. The second mutation was located in exon 2 c.867G > A, which is a missense variant. Sequence analysis revealed high occurrence of previously reported intronic variants mostly in a homozygous statue. Conclusion: The data supported the hypothesis that mutations in PTGIR gene, particularly the mutation we described, should be considered even in cases of migraine. The presence of this mutation in patients with family history raises important issues regarding genetic counselling.

The long-term performance of neural microelectrodes relies on biocompatibility and sensitivity of the electrode-tissue interface. Current neural electrodes are limited by poor electrical performance including high initial impedance and low charge storage capacity. In addition, they are mechanically hard which causes cellular reactive response to the implanted electrode. In this report, we have demonstrated a new templating method for fabrication of highly aligned conducting polymer nanotube. The structure of nanotubes can be precisely modulated by varying the time of electropolymerization. The electrical performance of poly(pyrrole) (PPY) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophine) (PEDOT) nanotubes including impedance and charge storage capacity were studied and compared as the surface morphology and structure of nanotube varied during the fabrication process. PEDOT nanotubes were found to have lower impedance than PPY nanotubes. By contrast, PPY nanotubes were shown to have higher charge storage capacity. These finding suggest that aligned conducting polymer nanotubes may enhance the long-term performance of neural microelectrodes.

Previous studies have reported the association of GABA receptor subunits B3, A5, and G3 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in chromosome 15q11-q13 with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). However, the currently available results are inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate the association between ASD and the GABA receptor SNPs in chromosomal region 15q11-q13. The association was calculated by the overall odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). We used sensitivity analyses and the assessment of publication bias in our meta-analysis. Eight independent case-control studies involving 1408 cases and 2846 healthy controls were analyzed, namely, 8 studies for GABRB3 SNPs as well as 4 studies for GABRA5 and GABRG3 polymorphisms. The meta-analysis showed that GABRB3 polymorphisms in general are not significantly associated with autism [OR = 0.846 (95% CI): 0.595-1.201, I 2  = 79.1%]. Further analysis indicated that no associations were found between GABRB3 SNPs and autism on rs2081648 [OR = 0.84 (95% CI) = 0.41-1.72, I 2  = 89.2%] and rs1426217 [OR = 1.13 (95% CI) = 0.64-2.0, I 2  = 83%]. An OR of 0.95 (95% CI) = 0.77-1.17 was reported (I 2  = 0.0%) for GABRA5 SNPs and an OR of 0.96 (95% CI) = 0.24-3.81 was obtained from GABRG3 SNPs (I 2  = 97.8%). This meta-analysis provides strong evidence that different SNPs of GABA receptor B3, A5, and G3 subunit genes located on chromosome 15q11-q13 are not associated with the development of autism spectrum diseases in different ethnic populations. However, in future research, large-scale and high-quality studies are necessary to confirm the results.

In this study, the role of known Parkinson's disease (PD) genes was examined in families with autosomal recessive (AR) parkinsonism to assist with the differential diagnosis of PD. Some families without mutations in known genes were also subject to whole genome sequencing with the objective to identify novel parkinsonism-related genes. Families were selected from 4000 clinical files of patients with PD or parkinsonism. AR inheritance pattern, consanguinity, and a minimum of two affected individuals per family were used as inclusion criteria. For disease gene/mutation identification, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, quantitative PCR, linkage, and Sanger and whole genome sequencing assays were carried out. A total of 116 patients (50 families) were examined. Fifty-four patients (46.55%; 22 families) were found to carry pathogenic mutations in known genes while a novel gene, not previously associated with parkinsonism, was found mutated in a single family (2 patients). Pathogenic mutations, including missense, nonsense, frameshift, and exon rearrangements, were found in Parkin, PINK1, DJ-1, SYNJ1, and VAC14 genes. In conclusion, variable phenotypic expressivity was seen across all families.

Chemotaxis is a ubiquitous biological phenomenon in which cells detect a spatial gradient of chemoattractant, and then move towards the source. Here we present a position-dependent advection-diffusion model that quantitatively describes the statistical features of the chemotactic motion of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum in a linear gradient of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate). We fit the model to experimental trajectories that are recorded in a microfluidic setup with stationary cAMP gradients and extract the diffusion and drift coefficients in the gradient direction. Our analysis shows that for the majority of gradients, both coefficients decrease over time and become negative as the cells crawl up the gradient. The extracted model parameters also show that besides the expected drift in the direction of the chemoattractant gradient, we observe a nonlinear dependency of the corresponding variance on time, which can be explained by the model. Furthermore, the results of the model show that the non-linear term in the mean squared displacement of the cell trajectories can dominate the linear term on large time scales.

An ideal neural device enables long-term, sensitive, and selective communication with the nervous system. To accomplish this task, the material interface should mimic the biophysical and the biochemical properties of neural tissue. By contrast, microfabricated neural probes utilize hard metallic conductors, which hinder their long-term performance because these materials are not intrinsically similar to soft neural tissue. This study reports a method for the fabrication of monodisperse conducting polymer microcups. Casimir forces between material surfaces at close proximity of less than 200 nm can lead to increased chaotic behavior of actuating devices depending on the strength of the Casimir interaction. We investigate these phenomena for phase-change materials in torsional oscillators, where the amorphous to crystalline phase transitions lead to transitions between high and low Casimir force and torque states, respectively, without material compositions. For a conservative system bifurcation curve and Poincare maps analysis show the absence of chaotic behavior but with the crystalline phase (high force-torque state) favoring more unstable behavior and stiction. However, for a nonconservative system chaotic behavior can take place introducing significant risk for stiction, which is again more pronounced for the crystalline phase. The latter illustrates the more general scenario that stronger Casimir forces and torques increase the possibility for chaotic behavior. The latter is making it impossible to predict whether stiction or stable actuation will occur on a long-term basis, and it is setting limitations in the design of micronano devices operating at short-range nanoscale separations.

Advancement in the development of metallic-based implantable micro-scale bioelectronics has been limited by low signal to noise ratios and low charge injection at electrode-tissue interfaces. Further, implantable electrodes lose their long-term functionality because of unfavorable reactive tissue responses. Thus, substantial incentive exists to produce bioelectronics capable of delivering therapeutic compounds while improving electrical performance. Here, we have produced hollow poly(pyrrole) microcontainers (MCs) using poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) as degradable templates. We demonstrate that the effective surface area of the electrode increases significantly as deposition charge density is increased, resulting in a 91% decrease in impedance and an 85% increase in charge storage capacity versus uncoated gold electrodes. We also developed an equivalent circuit model to quantify the effect of conducting polymer film growth on impedance. These MC-modified electrodes offer the potential to improve the electrical properties of implantable bioelectronics, as well as provide potential controlled release avenues for drug delivery applications.

Neurological disorders include a wide variety of mostly multifactorial diseases related to the development, survival, and function of the neuron cells. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been extensively studied in neurological disorders, and in a number of instances have been reproducibly linked to disease as risk factors. The RIT2 gene has been recently shown to be associated with a number of neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and autism. In the study reported here, we investigated the association of the rs12456492 and rs16976358 SNPs of the RIT2 gene with PD, essential tremor (ET), autism, schizophrenia (SCZ), and bipolar disorder (BPD; total of 2290 patients), and 1000 controls, by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method. Significant association was observed between rs12456492 and two disorders, PD and ET, whereas rs16976358 was found to be associated with autism, SCZ, and BPD. Our findings are indicative of differential association between the RIT2 SNPs and different neurological disorders.

Background: The aim of this study is the caparison of the complications rate among the patients which underwent nephrostomy removal with and without performing nephrostography., Materials and Methods: Between October 2010 and November 2011, 200 patients who underwent standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) procedures were included in this study. The patients were randomly assigned into two groups, Group A ( n = 100) did not undergo the antegrade nephrostography on postoperative day 2 and the patients were discharged keeping the nephrostomy until postoperative day 3, while in Group B ( n = 100) the nephrostomy tube was removed on postoperative day 3 after antegrade nephrostography demonstrating ureteral drainage down to the bladder. Postoperative complications in both groups were recorded and compared between two groups., Results: A total of 200 patients were treated with standard PCNL. The persistent leakage of urine after removal of the nephrostomy tube was encountered in 5 (5.0%) and 3 (3%) of patients in Groups 1 and 2, respectively. Urinary leakage was resolved with conservative management in 3 and 2 patients of Groups 1 and 2, respectively, but a double-J stent was inserted in 2 and 1 patients in each group because of persistent leakage of urine more than 1-week. The two groups show comparable complications such as prolonged urinary leakage which managed in a similar manner, however, postoperative hospital stay was lesser in Group 1., Conclusion: Our results revealed postoperative performing nephrostogramy before tube removal changed the planning of complications such as prolonged urinary leakage and could be omitted in cases., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest.

Background: Prevention of catheter-related infection is of prime importance,. However, because of the risks caused by the leakage of circulating antibiotics and development of resistance to antibiotics, they are replaced by lock solutions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and cost- effectiveness of taurolidine-citrate as a hemodialysis catheter lock solution compared to other common alternatives in Iran., Methods: To evaluate the efficacy of taurolidine-citrate, a systematic review was conducted by searching electronic databases. The outcomes of interest for cost-effectiveness analysis were as follows: "Catheter-related bacteremia episodes"; "catheter-related bacteremia-free survival"; "catheter thrombosis rate" for efficacy evaluation and "reduction of catheter-related infection". For evidence synthesis, a meta-analysis was conducted on the extracted efficacy data. To evaluate the cost of treatments, direct medical costs were included, and the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was calculated for each comparison. The payers' (patients and insurance companies) perspectives were used for cost analysis., Results: After carrying out the systematic process, three articles were included in the analysis. Considering 95% confidence interval, the relative difference was -0.16 (-0.25 to -0.07) for catheterrelated bacteremia episode, indicating that the rate of catheter-related infections in hemodialysis patients who used taurolidine-citrate was 16% less than in those hemodialysis patients who received heparin. Considering 95% confidence interval, the relative difference was 0.13 (-0.06 0.32) for catheter thrombosis, showing that the rate of catheter-related thrombosis in hemodialysis patients who used taurolidine-citrate was 13% more than in hemodialysis patients who received heparin. The results of this analysis indicated that taurolidine-citrate, compared to heparin, was more effective in preventing catheter-related infection; therefore, it could be considered as a superior strategy. Nevertheless, compared to heparin-gentamicin combination, taurolidine-citrate is an inferior strategy because of its higher cost and lower infection prevention., Conclusion: Compared to heparin, taurolidine-citrate is a superior option, but it is an inferior strategy compared to heparin-gentamicin combination. The clinical evidences on taurolidine-citrate, heparin and gentamicin/heparin are not sufficient for making confident decisions.

Wolfram syndrome is one of the rare autosomal recessive, progressive, neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by diabetes mellitus and optic atrophy. Several other features are observed in patients including deafness, ataxia, and peripheral neuropathy. A gene called WFS1 is identified on chromosome 4p, responsible for Wolfram syndrome. We investigated a family consisted of parents and 8 children, which 5 of them have been diagnosed for Wolfram syndrome. WFS1 gene in all family members was sequenced for causative mutations. A mutation (c.376G>A, p.A126T) was found in all affected members in homozygous state and in both parents in heterozygous state. The bioinformatics analysis showed the deleterious effects of this nucleotide change on the structure and function of the protein product. As all of the patients in the family showed the homozygote mutation, and parents were both heterozygote, this mutation is probably the cause of the disease. We identified this mutation in homozygous state for the first time as Wolfram syndrome causation. Uterine leiomyomas are the most common gynecologic benign tumors of the female genital tract that cause a variety of health problems including, abnormal menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, placenta displacement, premature labor, and miscarriages. Recently, studies showed that recurrent somatic mutations in MED12 exon 2 are the major cause of uterine leiomyomas in different ethnic groups. In order to validate these results in Iranian population, we performed mutational analysis of exon 2 and the flanking intronic regions by using single-strand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) and sequencing analyses in a series of 103 uterine leiomyomas samples. MED12 gene was mutated in 31.07 % of the uterine leiomyomas. Mutations were consisted of 20 missense (62.5 %) and 12 in-frame deletion (37.5 %) mutations and were not detected in normal myometrial tissue. Although this is the lowest mutation frequency reported so far, MED12 mutations are associated with fibroid pathogenesis in the studied population. Understanding the molecular mechanisms responsible for the pathogenesis of uterine leiomyoma will play an important role in designing new therapeutic strategies.

Purpose: To determine the effect of previous single or multiple open stone surgeries on percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) results and complications., Materials and Methods: We reviewed medical records of 1422 patients who had been undergone PCNL in our institute between 1998 and 2011 by the same surgeon. Patients were divided into 3 groups. The first group included patients with no history of previous ipsilateral open stone surgery (n = 711). Patients in second group had been undergone only one open stone surgery before PCNL (n = 405) and patients with more than one previous open stone surgery were placed in third group (n = 306). We compared operation duration, stone free rate (SFR), number of attempts to access the collecting system and intraoperative and postoperative complications between 3 groups., Results: There were no differences in sex, body mass index, stone burden and laterality between 3 groups. Operation time was significantly shorter in the first group (P = .000) while there was no statistically significant differences in operation duration between second and third groups (P > .973). The number of attempts to enter the collecting system was significantly lower in the first group in comparison to other two groups (P = .00). We didn&rsquo;t find significant differences between 3 groups in hospital stay, SFR, intraoperative and postoperative complications., Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that PCNL can be performed in patients with one or more open stone surgery history successfully without further complications.

Background. Bremsstrahlung (BS) imaging during radioembolization (RE) confirms the deposition of radiotracer in hepatic/extrahepatic tumors. The aim of this study is to demonstrate (32)P images and to optimize the imaging parameters. Materials and Methods. Thirty-nine patients with variable types of hepatic tumors, treated with the intra-arterial injection of (32)P, were included. All patients underwent BS SPECT imaging 24-72 h after tracer administration, using low energy high resolution (LEHR) (18 patients) or medium energy general purpose (MEGP) (21 patients) collimators. A grading scale from 1 to 4 was used to express the compatibility of the (32)P images with those obtained from CT/MRI. Results. Although the image quality obtained with the MEGP collimator was visually and quantitatively better than with the LEHR (76% concordance score versus 71%, resp.), there was no statistically significant difference between them. Conclusion. The MEGP collimator is the first choice for BS SPECT imaging. However, if the collimator change is time consuming (as in a busy center) or an MEGP collimator is not available, the LEHR collimator could be practical with acceptable images, especially in a SPECT study. In addition, BS imaging is a useful method to confirm the proper distribution of radiotherapeutic agents and has good correlation with anatomical findings.

Background: Tumor growth requires expansion and development of vascular network. An increase in Gleason score is representative of an increase in tumor invasion and extent. In this study, the relationship between Gleason score and vascular characteristics of needle biopsy samples in prostate cancer patients has been evaluated., Materials and Methods: We evaluated vascular characteristics including density and size of vessels; and percentage of vessels with irregular shape in 62 cancer-positive samples obtained by prostate needle biopsy under ultrasound guide, and compared them to Gleason score., Result: Gleason scores of 23 patients were ≤6; Gleason scores of 18 patients were 7 and 21 patients had their Gleason score from 8 to 10. An increase in Gleason score was associated with increased vascular density (P < 0.0001), increased percentage of vessels with irregular shape (P < 0.02) and decreased average vascular diameter (P < 0.015), from which the relationship with vascular density was clearer and more evident., Conclusion: Vascular morphological characteristics can be representative of angiogenic potential of prostate cancer which is required for tumor progression. As Gleason score can prognosticate the behavioral characteristics of prostate cancer in future, vascular characteristics may also be able to express tumor behavior. With attention to vascular characteristics in biopsy samples and apart from Gleason score, we may also be able to divide patients into other subtypes in a way being helpful for the establishment of treatment plan.

Purpose: To compare blind and nerve stimulation guided transurethral obturator nerve block (ONB) in transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) to prevent obturator reflex., Patients and Methods: One hundred and twelve patients with lateral bladder wall tumors and at high risk for general anesthesia were categorized randomly in three groups. In the first group (34 patients), after spinal analgesia was administered, the exact site of the obturator nerve was determined by nerve stimulation and 15 mL of lidocaine HCl 2% was injected around the nerve. In the second group (31 patients), we determined the obturator nerve using nerve stimulation (like the first group), then 20 mL of saline was injected. In the third group (47 patients), the obturator nerve was determined based on anatomic landmarks and blocked subsequently. Leg jerking was reported and compared in the three groups., Results: The median ages in the three groups were 55.4, 59.4, 57.8 years in the first, second, and third groups, respectively. Male/female ratios were 79.5% in the first, 80.7% in the second, and 80.9% in the third group (P=0.986). Leg jerking was reported in 5.8%, 34%, and 6.3% of patients in the first, second, and third groups, respectively (P=0.0001). ONB took 6.7 minutes in the first, 6.1 minutes in the second, and 5.2 minutes in the third group, on average. There was no report of adverse effects of lidocaine HCl in this study., Conclusion: Transvesical ONB is a safe and effective method of ONB before TURBT. This method is feasible by urologists and promising even without nerve stimulation and only by anatomic landmarks.

Purpose: To evaluate the test-retest reliability and compare the static and dynamic postural control values in competitive athletes following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and controls., Methods: Thirty athletes, 8.4 ± 1.8 months after ACL reconstruction, and thirty healthy matched controls were asked to execute single-leg stance and single-legged drop jump tests onto a force plate. Amplitude and velocity in anteroposterior and mediolateral directions, and mean total velocity were measured for static evaluation. Peak vertical ground reaction force (PVGRF) during landing and takeoff and loading rate were measured for dynamic evaluation. To evaluate test-retest reliability, 15 participants of each group repeated the tests 6-8 days after the first session. Mixed model of analysis of variance was used to determine differences between the involved, uninvolved, and control limbs. The test-retest reliability was measured using intraclass correlation coefficient and standard error of measurement., Results: Greater postural sway has been observed in the operated leg of ACL-reconstructed athletes compared with the non-operated side (P < 0.01) and the matched limb of the control group (P < 0.01). During landing, PVGRF and loading rate on the uninvolved limb of the athletes who had undergone ACL reconstruction were greater in comparison with those of the control group (P < 0.001). Both static and dynamic postural measures have high test-retest reliability, ranging from 0.73 to 0.88., Conclusions: Static and dynamic postural measures are reliable tests to evaluate functional performance of athletes following ACL reconstruction. Eight months postsurgery, competitive athletes still demonstrated postural asymmetries, compared to matched controls, which might result in their susceptibility to future ACL injury., Level of Evidence: Prognostic study, case-control, Level III.

Background: Considering the limited available resources, high cost of the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS), and high load of trauma patients especially in our centers, a careful assessment of HEMS in our center seemed to be necessary for trauma patients., Methods: From April 2001 to September 2007, the data of all patients transferred by HEMS were extracted including: Annual number of services, clinical category, number of proper or improper services, and rescue time for HEMS and ground ambulance. The criteria for the properly transferred group included: Death or being operated in the first 24 hours of admission, admission in ICU care units, and transfer of more than three patients in one mission. Others were considered as improper group., Results: In this period through 185 flights, 225 victims were transferred. The most common reason of HEMS dispatching was trauma. The most difference of rescue time between ground ambulance and HEMS was recorded in Lamerd that was transferring patients with HEMS needed 3 hours less than ground ambulance. However, in Sarvestan, Dashte-Arjan, and Marvdasht, transferred patients with ground ambulance needed less time than air transfer. Most of transferred patients were from Kazeroon, Nourabad and Lamerd respectively while 46.3% of patients were in the proper group, and the rest were considered as improper group., Conclusion: Our study revealed that helicopter dispatch to the cities like Lamerd, Lar, Khonj, Abadeh can be more effective, whereas, for the towns like Marvdasht, Dashte-Arjan, Sarvestan, Sepidan, Saadatshar, Tang Abolhayat use of HEMS should be limited to specific conditions. Our study showed inclusion of physicians in the decision making team increased the number of transferred cases.

Objective: To validate the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) for the assessment of competitive athletes with higher level sports activities after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction., Methods and Measures: Fifty-seven athletes (39 males and 18 females; age, 25.6 ± 3.4 years; height, 179.6 ± 7.4 cm; weight, 77.6 ± 9.8 kg) after ACL reconstruction were asked to complete the Persian KOOS and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires in the test session. To evaluate test-retest reliability, all participants filled out the KOOS and SF-36, 6-8 days after the first visit. The properties of the KOOS in terms of reliability [Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC)], internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), dimensionality (item-scale correlation) and construct validity (Spearman's rank correlation) were evaluated., Results: No floor or ceiling effect was observed. The ICCs (S.E.M.s) of the KOOS subscales were: Pain 0.93 (2.2), Symptoms 0.85 (3.1), Activities of Daily Living 0.91 (2.9), Function in Sport and Recreation 0.75 (2.1) and Knee-related Quality of Life 0.89 (2.6). The Cronbach's alphas of the KOOS subscales were: Pain 0.91, Symptoms 0.75, Activities of Daily Living 0.96, Function in Sport and Recreation 0.86 and Knee-related Quality of Life 0.74. Spearman's rank correlations between the subscales of the KOOS and representative subscales of the SF-36 ranged from 0.40 to 0.79., Conclusion: This study illustrates the validity and reliability of the KOOS in measuring the functional status and quality of life of athletes after ACL reconstruction. Thymus daenensis is an aromatic medicinal plant endemic to Iran. We used inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers to detect genetic polymorphism in this herb using 17 T. daenensis accessions collected from different geographic regions in Iran. The 15 primers chosen for analysis revealed 256 bands, of which 228 (88.9%) were polymorphic. Jaccard's similarity indices based on ISSR profiles were subjected to UPGMA cluster analysis. The generated dendrogram revealed two major groups. The Tc group included the accessions collected from the center of the Zagros Mountains, and the Te group was collected from the extremes of the Zagros range. A principal coordinate analysis confirmed the results of clustering. The results showed that the divergence of accessions based on the Zagros Mountains is more logical in comparison with classification on the basis of provincial borders. Gene diversity and expected heterozygosity were greater in the Tc group than in the Te group, suggesting that the germplasm collected from the center of the Zagros Mountains is more variable.

Children prenatally exposed to tobacco have been found to exhibit increased rates of behavior problems related to response inhibition deficits. The present study compared the brain function of tobacco-exposed (n=7) and unexposed (n=11) 12-year-olds during a Go/No-Go response inhibition task using an event-related functional MRI (fMRI) design. Prenatal alcohol exposure, neonatal medical problems, environmental risk, IQ, current environmental smoke exposure, and handedness were statistically controlled. Tobacco-exposed children showed greater activation in a relatively large and diverse set of regions, including left frontal, right occipital, and bilateral temporal and parietal regions. In contrast, unexposed but not exposed children showed activation in the cerebellum, which prior research has indicated is important for attention and motor preparation. The diversity of regions showing greater activation among tobacco-exposed children suggests that their brain function is characterized by an inefficient recruitment of regions required for response inhibition.

A voting model (or a generalization of the Glauber model at zero temperature) on a multidimensional lattice is defined as a system composed of a lattice, each site of which is either empty or occupied by a single particle. The reactions of the system are such that two adjacent sites, one empty, the other occupied, may evolve to a state where both of these sites are either empty or occupied. The continuum version of this model in a D-dimensional region with a boundary is studied, and two general behaviors of such systems are investigated, the stationary behavior of the system, and the dominant way of relaxation of the system toward its stationary state. Based on the first behavior, a static phase transition (discontinuous changes in the stationary profiles of the system) is studied. Based on the second behavior, a dynamical phase transition (discontinuous changes in the relaxation times of the system) is studied. It is shown that the static phase transition is induced by the bulk reactions only, while the dynamical phase transition is a result of both bulk reactions and boundary conditions.

Perturbations around autonomous one-dimensional single-species reaction-diffusion systems are investigated. It is shown that the parameter space corresponding to the autonomous systems is divided into two parts: In one part, the system is stable against the perturbations, in the sense that the largest relaxation time of the one-point functions changes continuously with perturbations. In the other part, however, the system is unstable against perturbations, so that any small perturbation drastically modifies the large-time behavior of the one-point functions.

The Glauber model on a one-dimensional lattice with boundaries (for the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases) is considered. The large-time behavior of the one-point function is studied. It is shown that at any temperature, the system shows a dynamical phase transition. The dynamical phase transition is controlled by the rate of spin flip at the boundaries, and is a discontinuous change of the derivative of the relaxation time towards the stationary configuration.

Autonomous multispecies systems with more-than-two-neighbor interactions are studied. Conditions necessary and sufficient for the closedness of the evolution equations of the n-point functions are obtained. The average numbers of the particles at each site for one species and three-site interactions, and its generalization to the more-than-three-site interactions, are explicitly obtained. Generalizations of the Glauber model in different directions, using generalized rates, generalized numbers of states at each site, and generalized numbers of interacting sites, are also investigated.

An asymmetric generalization of the zero-temperature q-state Potts model on a one-dimensional lattice, with and without boundaries, has been studied. The dynamics of the particle number, and especially the large time behavior of the system, has been analyzed. In the thermodynamic limit, the system exhibits two kinds of phase transitions, a static and a dynamic phase transition.

A family of one-dimensional multispecies reaction-diffusion processes on a lattice is introduced. It is shown that these processes are exactly solvable, provided a nonspectral matrix equation is satisfied. Some general remarks on the solutions to this equation, and some special solutions are given. The large-time behavior of the conditional probabilities of such systems is also investigated.

We consider a two-parameter family of asymmetric exclusion processes for particles living on a continuous one-dimensional space. Using the Bethe ansatz, the exact solution to the master equation, and from that the drift and the diffusion rate in the two particle sector, are obtained.
