Classical crystal optics has recently undergone a renaissance as developments in optical microscopy and polarimetry, enabled in part by sensitive imaging CCD cameras and personal computers, now permit the analytical separation of various optical effects that are otherwise convolved in polarized light micrographs. In this tutorial review, we review recent developments in the measurement of the principal crystallo-optical quantities including linear birefringence, linear dichroism, circular birefringence, and circular dichroism, as well as new effects in crystal optics encountered in unusual mixed crystals. The new microscopies and polarimetries are applied to problems of crystallographic twinning, phase transformations, stress birefringence, symmetry reduction, and the design of new crystalline materials.

Addition of amine nucleophiles to acetonitrile solutions of the OsIV anilido complex TpOs(NHPh)Cl2 (1) [Tp = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate] gives products with derivatized anilido ligands, i.e., TpOs[NH-p-C6H4(N(CH2)5)]Cl2 (2) from piperidine and TpOs[NH-p-C6H4N(CH2)4]Cl2 (3) from pyrrolidine. These materials are formed in approximately 30% yield under anaerobic conditions, together with approximately 60% yields of the OsIII aniline complex TpOs(NH2Ph)Cl2 (5). Formation of the para-substituted materials 2 or 3 from 1 involves oxidative removal of two hydrogen atoms (two H+ and two e-). The oxidation can be accomplished by 1, forming 5, or by O2. Related reactions have been observed with other amines and with the 2-naphthylamido derivative, which gives an ortho-substituted product. Kinetic studies indicate an addition-elimination mechanism involving initial attack of the amine nucleophile on the anilido ligand. These are unusual examples of nucleophilic aromatic substitution of hydrogen. Ab initio calculations on 1 show that the LUMO has significant density at the ortho and para positions of the anilido ligand, resembling the LUMO of nitrobenzene. By analogy with nucleophilic aromatic substitution, 2 is quantitatively formed from piperidine and the p-chloroanilide TpOs(NH-p-C6H4Cl)Cl2 (7). Binding the anilide ligands to an oxidizing OsIV center thus causes a remarkable umpolung or inversion of chemical character from a typically electron-rich anilido to an electron-deficient aromatic functionality. We present measurements of the dispersion of anomalous azimuthal rotation signals from dyed crystals that are at variance with our predictions based on a model of these effects predicated on the predominance of Rayleigh scattering from isolated dye molecules (Kaminsky et al. J Phys Chem A 107:2800-2807, 2003). Here, we extend our scattering model to include the effects of the absorption and refraction of individual dyes that are inclined in a biased manner with respect to the eigenmodes of the medium. Our revised model describes the wavelength dependence of the rotations. It is likely that absorption, refraction, and Rayleigh scattering are all manifest, with absorption and refraction being the leading effects., (Copyright 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

New five-coordinate Pt(IV) complexes [{(o-R2-p-R'-C6H2)NC(R' ')}2CH]PtMe3 (R, R', R' ' = alkyl or H) are reported. The complex with R = Me, R' = tBu, R' ' = Me generates unsaturated Pt(II) species capable of alkane C-H bond activation and stoichiometric dehydrogenation.

A microscope was constructed for imaging circular dichroism of heterogeneous anisotropic media. To avoid linear biases that are common with electronic circular polarization modulation, we chose a retrogressive solution: mechanical light modulation by rotating a linear polarizer with respect to a quarter wave plate continuously tuned by tilting to the operating wavelength. Our comparatively slow technique succeeds with near-perfect circular input and signal averaging using a CCD camera. We have applied the method to anomalously birefringent crystals of 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone that are shown to have intergrown mirror image domains, undetected by X-ray diffraction because the twinning complexity renders differences in anomalous dispersion, already small, unreliable. The origin of the anomalous birefringence and the assignment of the absolute configuration are discussed.

The synthesis, properties, and electroluminescent device applications of a series of five new diphenylanthrazoline molecules 1a-1e are reported. Compounds 1b, 1c, and 1d crystallized in the monoclinic system with the space groups P2(1)/c, C2/c, and P2(1)/c, respectively, revealing highly planar molecules. Diphenylanthrazolines 1a-1e have a formal reduction potential in the range -1.39 to -1.58 V (versus SCE) and estimated electron affinities (LUMO levels) of 2.90-3.10 eV. Compounds 1a-1e emit blue light with fluorescence quantum yields of 58-76% in dilute solution, whereas they emit yellow-green light as thin films. The diphenylanthrazoline molecules as the emissive layers in light-emitting diodes gave yellow light with a maximum brightness of 133 cd/m(2) and an external quantum efficiency of up to 0.07% in ambient air. Bilayer light-emitting diodes using compounds 1a-1e as the electron-transport layer and poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethyl-hexyloxy)-1,4-phenylene vinylene) as the emissive layer had a maximum external efficiency of 3.1% and 2.0 lm/W and a brightness of up to 965 cd/m(2) in ambient air. These results represent enhancements of up to 50 times in external quantum efficiency and 17 times in brightness when using 1a-1e as the electron-transport materials in polymer light-emitting diodes. These results demonstrate that the new diphenylanthrazolines are promising n-type semiconductors for organic electronics.

A trimeric compound containing Co(II) is described, namely tris[mu-2-[3-(dimethylamino)propylimino]propane-1-thiolato]tricobalt(II) chloride bis(hexafluorophosphate), [Co(3)(C(10)H(21)N(2)S)(3)]Cl(PF(6))(2). Each Co atom is ligated by one 2-[3-(dimethylamino)propylimino]propane-1-thiolate ligand, an amine group and an imine group. The thiolate groups bridge the Co atoms, forming a six-membered ring that encloses the chloride ion in a well defined binding pocket.

The osmium(VI) nitrido complex TpOs(N)Cl(2) [1, Tp = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate] reacts with triarylphosphines to afford the Os(IV) phosphiniminato complexes TpOs(NPAr(3))Cl(2) [Ar = p-tolyl (tol) (2a), phenyl (2b), p-CF(3)C(6)H(4) (2c)] in nearly quantitative yield. Protonation of 2a-c with 1 equiv of HOTf in MeCN occurs at the phosphiniminato nitrogen to give [TpOs(IV)(NHPAr(3))Cl(2)]OTf (3a-c) in 68-80% yield. Solutions of 2a-c in CH(2)Cl(2) react with excess H(2)O over 1 week to form the disproportionation products 1 (28%), TpOs(III)(NHPAr(3))Cl(2) (4a-c) (60%), and OPAr(3) (35%). Treatment of solutions of 3a-c with H(2)O also affords 1, 4a-c, and OPAr(3). X-ray structures of 2b, 3b, and 4b are presented. Cyclic voltammograms of compounds 2a-c exhibit Os(V)/Os(IV) and Os(IV)/Os(III) couples at approximately 0.3 and -1 V versus Cp(2)Fe(+/0). Protonation to give 3 makes reduction easier by approximately 1.2 V, so that these compounds show Os(IV)/Os(III) and Os(III)/Os(II) couples. In the hydrolytic disproportionation of 2a-c, labeling studies using (18)O-enriched O(2) and H(2)O establish water as the source of the oxygen atom in the OPAr(3) product. The conversions are accelerated by HOTf and inhibited by NaOD. The relative rates of hydrolytic disproportionation of 2a-c vary in the order tol > Ph > p-CF(3)C(6)H(4). The data indicate that protonation of the phosphiniminato nitrogen is required for hydrolysis. The mechanism of the hydrolytic disproportionation is compared to that of the related reaction of the osmium(IV) acetonitrile complex [TpOs(NCMe)Cl(2)](+).

Sixteen palladium(II) alpha-diimine catalysts were investigated in a screening-like procedure for the copolymerization of ethene with norbornene. The resulting copolymers were characterized by (13)C NMR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, and viscosimetry. The degree of incorporation of norbornene in the polymer chain is very high for most of the catalysts. To validate the results achieved in the screening, two catalysts, [[ArN=CHCH=NAr]Pd(Me)(CH(3)CN)]BAr(f) (4) (1 b'; Ar=2,6-Me(2)C(6)H(3), BAr(f) (4)=B[3,5-C(6)H(3)(CF(3))(2)](4)) and [[ArN=C(CH(3))C(CH(3))=NAr]Pd(Me)(CH(3)CN)]BAr(f) (4) (2 c'; Ar=2,6-iPr(2)C(6)H(3)), were synthesized as discrete catalytically active species, and their copolymerization behavior was investigated in detail. In agreement with the screening results, 1 b' incorporates norbornene much better in the polymer chain than ethene, a property that has no analogue in metallocene catalysts.

Superoxide reductases (SORs) are nonheme iron-containing enzymes that reduce HO(2) to H(2)O(2). Exogenous substrates such as N(3)(-) and CN(-) have been shown to bind to the catalytic iron site of SOR, and cyanide acts as an inhibitor. To understand how these exogenous ligands alter the physical and reactivity properties of the SOR iron site, acetate-, azide-, and cyanide-ligated synthetic models of SOR have been prepared. The x-ray crystal structures of azide-ligated [Fe(III)(S(Me2)N(4)(tren))(N(3))](+) (3), dimeric cyanide-bridged ([Fe(III)(S(Me2)N(4)(tren))](2)-mu-CN)(3+) (5), and acetate-ligated [Fe(III)(S(Me2)N(4)(tren))(OAc)](+) (6) are described, in addition to x-ray absorption spectrum-derived and preliminary crystallographic structures of cyanide-ligated [Fe(III)(S(Me2)N(4)(tren))(CN)](+) (4). Cyanide coordination to our model (4) causes the redox potential to shift anodically by 470 mV relative to acetate-ligated 6 and 395 mV relative to azide-ligated 3. If cyanide coordination were to cause a similar shift in redox potential with SOR, then the reduction potential of the catalytically active Fe(3+) center would fall well below that of its biological reductants. These results suggest therefore that cyanide inhibits SOR activity by making the Fe(2+) state inaccessible and thus preventing the enzyme from turning over. Cyanide inhibits activity in the metalloenzyme superoxide dismutase via a similar mechanism. The reduced five-coordinate precursor to 3, 4, and 6 [Fe(II)(S(Me2)N(4)(tren))](+) (1) was previously shown by us to react with superoxide to afford H(2)O(2) via an [Fe(III)(S(Me2)N(4)(tren))(OOH)](+) intermediate. Cyanide and azide do not bind to 1 and do not prevent 1 from reducing superoxide.

Ethene/norbornene copolymerization by the catalyst system [Me2Si(3-(tert)BuCp) (N(tertBu)]TiCl2/ MAO was investigated in detail at 30 degrees C, 60 degrees C, and 90 degrees C. A mass flow controller was used in this work to obtain kinetic data and investigate temperature's effects on activity, norbornene incorporation, copolymerization parameter, microstructure, glass transition temperature, and molar masses were described. High copolymerization values r(E) and high alternation are determined. The number of isotactic alternating sequences is much higher than that of the syndiotactic alternating sequences.

TpOs(N)(OAc)2 (2) is formed upon reaction of TpOs(N)Cl2 (1) with excess silver acetate (Tp = hydrotrispyrazolylborate). Treatment of 2 with protic acids HX gives the osmium(VI) complexes TpOs(N)X2, where X = trifluoroacetate (TFA, 3), trichloroacetate (TCA, 4), tribromoacetate (TBA, 5), bromide (6), oxalate (X2 = O2C2O2, 7), or nitrate (ONO2, 8). Cyclic voltammetry studies of 1-8 show irreversible reductions of OsVI to OsV, varying over a range of 0.63 V. Much smaller relative variations are observed in 15N NMR chemical shifts, v(Os identical to N) stretching frequencies, and optical absorbances. Compounds 1-8 all react with PPh3 by nucleophilic attack at the nitride ligand, yielding TpOs(NPPh3)X2. The reactions are accelerated by more electron withdrawing ligands X. The relative rates correlate with the peak reduction potentials although the effect is small: the rates vary by only 10(2) while the 0.63 V change in Ep,c corresponds to a change in equilibrium constant for electron transfer of approximately 10(11). Compounds 1-8 also react with triphenylboron, BPh3, with formation of borylanilido complexes TpOs[N(Ph)BPh2]X2. However, rate constants for reactions with BPh3 to yield OsIV boryl-amido complexes do not in general correlate with one-electron-reduction potentials. This is likely due to the mechanism of the BPh3 reactions being a two-step process and not simply nucleophilic attack.

Cp2TiCl2 reacts with NaOOtBu to form the new titanium peroxide complex, Cp2Ti(OOtBu)Cl (1), which has been characterized both in solution and in the solid state. This complex is surprisingly unreactive towards olefins and phosphines, as it does not directly transfer an oxygen atom. Instead, decomposition occurs via initial homolysis of the oxygen-oxygen bond, yielding a tert-butoxyl radical. Decomposition of 1 in the presence of phosphines yields either phosphine oxides (e.g., OPPh3) or phosphinites (e.g., tBuOPEt2), products that result from tBuO* + PR3. O-O bond homolysis is surprising because the Ti(IV) center is d0 and cannot be oxidized, where all previous clear examples of homolytic cleavage of metal peroxide complexes are facilitated by oxidation of the metal center.

We report new divalent osmium complexes that feature strong red metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer (MLCT) phosphorescence and electrophosphorescence. The general formula of the complexes is Os(II)(N-N)(2)L-L, where N-N is either a bipyridine or a phenanthroline and L-L is either a phosphine or an arsine. New polypyridyl ligands synthesized are 4,4'-di(biphenyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (15) and 4,4'-di(diphenyl ether)-2,2'-bipyridine (16), and the 1,10-phenanthroline derivatives synthesized are 4,7-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (17), 4,7-bis(p-bromophenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (18), 4,7-bis(4'-phenoxybiphen-4-yl)-1,10-phenanthroline (19), and 4,7-bis(4-naphth-2-ylphenyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (20). 4,4'-Diphenyl-2,2'-bipyridine (21) and 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (22) were also used in these studies. Strong pi-acid ligands used were 1,2-bis(diphenylarseno)ethane (23), cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene (24), and cis-1,2-vinylenebis(diphenylarsine) (25). Ligand 25 is used for the first time in these types of luminescent osmium complexes. These compounds feature strong MLCT absorption bands in the visible region and strong red phosphorescent emission ranging from 611 to 651 nm, with quantum efficiency up to 45% in ethanol solution at room temperature. Red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were successfully fabricated by doping the Os(II) complexes into blend of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) and 2-tert-butylphenyl-5-biphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD). Brightness over 1400 cd/m(2) for a double-layer device has been reached, with a turn-on voltage of 8 V. The maximum external quantum efficiency was 0.64%. Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates (x, y) of the red electrophosphorescence from the complexes are (0.65, 0.34), which indicates pure red emission.

Nitrile hydratase (NHase) is an iron-containing metalloenzyme that converts nitriles to amides. The mechanism by which this biochemical reaction occurs is unknown. One mechanism that has been proposed involves nucleophilic attack of an Fe-bound nitrile by water (or hydroxide). Reported herein is a five-coordinate model compound ([Fe(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Et,Pr))](+)) containing Fe(III) in an environment resembling that of NHase, which reversibly binds a variety of nitriles, alcohols, amines, and thiocyanate. XAS shows that five-coordinate [Fe(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Et,Pr))](+) reacts with both methanol and acetonitrile to afford a six-coordinate solvent-bound complex. Competitive binding studies demonstrate that MeCN preferentially binds over ROH, suggesting that nitriles would be capable of displacing the H(2)O coordinated to the iron site of NHase. Thermodynamic parameters were determined for acetonitrile (DeltaH = -6.2(+/-0.2) kcal/mol, DeltaS = -29.4(+/-0.8) eu), benzonitrile (-4.2(+/-0.6) kcal/mol, DeltaS = -18(+/-3) eu), and pyridine (DeltaH = -8(+/-1) kcal/mol, DeltaS = -41(+/-6) eu) binding to [Fe(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Et,Pr))](+) using variable-temperature electronic absorption spectroscopy. Ligand exchange kinetics were examined for acetonitrile, iso-propylnitrile, benzonitrile, and 4-tert-butylpyridine using (13)C NMR line-broadening analysis, at a variety of temperatures. Activation parameters for ligand exchange were determined to be DeltaH(+ +) = 7.1(+/-0.8) kcal/mol, DeltaS(+ +) = -10(+/-1) eu (acetonitrile), DeltaH(+ +) = 5.4(+/-0.6) kcal/mol, DeltaS(+ +) = -17(+/-2) eu (iso-propionitrile), DeltaH(+ +) = 4.9(+/-0.8) kcal/mol, DeltaS(+ +) = -20(+/-3) eu (benzonitrile), and DeltaH(+ +) = 4.7(+/-1.4) kcal/mol DeltaS(+ +) = -18(+/-2) eu (4-tert-butylpyridine). The thermodynamic parameters for pyridine binding to a related complex, [Fe(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Pr,Pr))](+) (DeltaH = -5.9(+/-0.8) kcal/mol, DeltaS = -24(+/-3) eu), are also reported, as well as kinetic parameters for 4-tert-butylpyridine exchange (DeltaH(+ +) = 3.1(+/-0.8) kcal/mol, DeltaS(+ +) = -25(+/-3) eu). These data show for the first time that, when it is contained in a ligand environment similar to that of NHase, Fe(III) is capable of forming a stable complex with nitriles. Also, the rates of ligand exchange demonstrate that low-spin Fe(III) in this ligand environment is more labile than expected. Furthermore, comparison of [Fe(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Et,Pr))](+) and [Fe(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Pr,Pr))](+) demonstrates how minor distortions induced by ligand constraints can dramatically alter the reactivity of a metal complex.

The osmium(VI) nitrido complex TpOs(N)Cl(2) (1) has been prepared from K[Os(N)O(3)] and KTp in aqueous ethanolic HCl. It reacts rapidly with PhMgCl and related reagents with transfer of a phenyl group to the nitrido ligand. This forms Os(IV) metalla-analido complexes, which are readily protonated to give the analido complex TpOs(NHPh)Cl(2) (4). The nitrido-phenyl derivatives TpOs(N)PhCl and TpOs(N)Ph(2) react more slowly with PhMgCl and are not competent intermediates for the reaction of 1 with PhMgCl. Reactions of 1 with alkyl- and arylboranes similarly result in transfer of one organic group to nitrogen, leading to isolable borylamido complexes such as TpOs[N(Ph)(BPh(2))]Cl(2) (11). This is an unprecedented insertion of a nitrido ligand into a boron--carbon bond. Hydrolysis of 11 gives 4. Mechanistic studies suggest that both the Grignard and borane reactions proceed by initial weak coordination of Mg or B to the nitrido ligand, followed by migration of the carbanion to nitrogen. The hydrocarbyl group does not go to osmium and then move to nitrogen--there is no change in the atoms bound to the osmium during the reactions. It is suggested that there may be a general preference for nucleophiles to add directly to the metal--ligand multiple bond rather than binding to the metal first and migrating. Ab initio calculations show that the unusual reactivity of 1 results from its accessible LUMO and LUMO + 1, which are the Os = N pi* orbitals. The bonding in 1 and its reactivity with organoboranes are reminiscent of CO.

To determine how a substitutionally inert metal can play a catalytic role in the metalloenzyme nitrile hydratase (NHase), a reactive five-coordinate Co(III) thiolate complex ([Co(III)(S(2)(Me2)N(3)(Pr,Pr))](PF(6)) (1)) that resembles the active site of cobalt containing nitrile hydratase (Co NHase) was prepared. This was screened for reactivity, by using low-temperature electronic absorption spectroscopy, toward a number of biologically relevant "substrates". It was determined 1 will react with azide, thiocyanate, and ammonia, but is unreactive toward nitriles, NO, and butyrate. Substrate-bound 1 has similar spectroscopic and structural properties as [Co(III)(ADIT(2))](PF(6)) (2). Complex 2 is a six-coordinate Co(III) complex containing cis-thiolates and imine nitrogens, and has properties similar to the cobalt center of Co NHase. Substrate binding to 1 is reversible and temperature-dependent, allowing for the determination of the thermodynamic parameters of azide and thiocyanate binding and the rates of ligand dissociation. Azide and thiocyanate bind trans to a thiolate, and with similar entropies and enthalpies (thiocyanate: DeltaH = -7.5 +/- 1.1 kcal/mol, DeltaS = -17.2 +/- 3.2 eu; azide: DeltaH = -6.5 +/- 1.0 kcal/mol, DeltaS = -12.6 +/- 2.4 eu). The rates of azide and thiocyanate displacement from the metal center are also comparable to one another (k(d) = (7.22 +/- 0.04) x 10(-)(1) s(-)(1) for thiocyanate and k(d) = (2.14 +/- 0.50) x 10(-)(2) s(-)(1) for azide), and are considerably faster than one would expect for a low-spin d(6) six-coordinate Co(III) complex. These rates are comparable to those of an analogous Fe(III) complex, demonstrating that Co(III) and Fe(III) react at comparable rates when in this ligand environment. This study therefore indicates that ligand displacement from a low-spin Co(III) center in a ligand environment that resembles NHase is not prohibitively slow so as to disallow catalytic action in nonredox active cobalt metalloenzymes.

Modulation techniques for measuring changes in optical birefringence, such as the rotating-polariser method (Wood & Glazer, 1980, J. Appl. Crystallogr. 13, 217), allow one to determine |sin delta|, delta = 2piLDeltan/lambda, Deltan = double refraction, L = light path and lambda = wavelength. However, they generally suffer from not providing absolute values of the optical retardance or are limited to relatively low retardance values. In addition, knowledge of the absolute phase is required when establishing the correct values of optical orientation information. In this paper, it is shown how the phase delta, and thus optical retardance, can be extracted from combining measurements of |sin delta| at different wavelengths. The new approach works on each single point of a 2-D picture without the need to correlate with neighbouring points. There is virtually no limit to the retardance, and the computational efforts are small compared with other methods (e.g. Ajovalasit et al. 1998, J. Strain Analysis 33, 75). When used with imaging techniques, such as the rotating polariser method of Glazer, Lewis & Kaminsky 1996 (Proc. R. Soc. London Series A452, 2751) this process has the potential to identify automatically optically anisotropic substances under the microscope. The algorithm derived in this paper is valid not only for birefringence studies, but can be applied to all studies of interfering light waves.

The catalytic degradation of polyethylene to short-chain hydrocarbons is possible with zirconium hydride compounds (see picture), and represents the first step in the reversal of Ziegler - Natta polymerization. Thus, even in the case of polyolefins the important target of plastics recycling, the recovery of reusable monomers from polymer waste, may be achieved.
