Abstract: The approach of Observational Astronomy is mainly aimed at the construction of larger aperture telescopes, more sensitive detectors and broader wavelength coverage. Certainly fruitful, this approach turns out to be not completely fulfilling the needs when phenomena related to the formation of black holes (BH), neutron stars (NS) and relativistic stars in general are concerned. Recently, mainly through the Vela, Beppo-SAX and Swift satellites, we reached a reasonable knowledge of the most violent events in the Universe and of some of the processes we believe are leading to the formation of black holes (BH). We plan to open a new window of opportunity to study the variegated physics of very fast astronomical transients, particularly the one related to extreme compact objects. The innovative approach is based on three cornerstones: 1) the design (the conceptual design has been already completed) of a 3m robotic telescope and related focal plane instrumentation characterized by the unique features: "No telescope points faster"; 2) simultaneous multi-wavelengths observations (photometry, spectroscopy o\& polarimetry); 3) high time resolution observations. The conceptual design of the telescope and related instrumentation is optimized to address the following topics: High frequency a-periodic variability, Polarization, High z GRBs, Short GRBs, GRB-Supernovae association, Multi-wavelengths simultaneous photometry and rapid low dispersion spectroscopy. This experiment will turn the "exception" (like the optical observations of GRB 080319B) to "routine"., To be published in the proceedings of the conference "The Shocking Universe", San Servolo Venice, September 14-18, 2009.

Abstract: The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) will consist of an array of three types of telescopes covering a wide energy range, from tens of GeV up to more than 100 TeV. The high energy section (> 3 TeV) will be covered by the Small Size Telescopes (SST). ASTRI (Astrofisica con Specchi a Tecnologia Replicante Italiana) is a flagship project of the Italian Ministry of Research and Education led by INAF, aiming at the design and construction of a prototype of the Dual Mirror SST. In a second phase the ASTRI project foresees the installation of the first elements of the SST array at the CTA southern site, a mini-array of 5-7 telescopes. The optimization of the layout of this mini-array embedded in the SST array of the CTA Observatory has been the object of an intense simulation effort. Abstract: The discovery of almost two thousand exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. We see gas giants in few-day orbits, whole multi-planet systems within the orbit of Mercury, and new populations of planets with masses between that of the Earth and Neptune—all unknown in the Solar System. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? How do planetary systems work and what causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? The EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) space mission was conceived to take up the challenge to explain this diversity in terms of formation, evolution, internal structure and planet and atmospheric composition. This requires in-depth spectroscopic knowledge of the atmospheres of a large and well-defined planet sample for which precise physical, chemical and dynamical information can be obtained. In order to fulfil this ambitious scientific program, EChO was designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large, diverse and well-defined planet sample within its 4-year mission lifetime. The transit and eclipse spectroscopy method, whereby the signal from the star and planet are differentiated using knowledge of the planetary ephemerides, allows us to measure atmospheric signals from the planet at levels of at least 10−4 relative to the star. This can only be achieved in conjunction with a carefully designed stable payload and satellite platform. It is also necessary to provide broad instantaneous wavelength coverage to detect as many molecular species as possible, to probe the thermal structure of the planetary atmospheres and to correct for the contaminating effects of the stellar photosphere. Abstract: In the last decade the Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera of the Italain Institute for Astrophysics, INAF, got deeply involved in Cherenkov optics manufacturing and testing, contributing to the realization of mirrors for MAGIC and CTA projects. In this contribution we review the characterization facilities that INAF-OAB developed to qualify the performance of Cherenkov mirrors. The design of these facilities was driven by the general Cherenkov optics configuration, realized with a large number of mirrors with arc-minutes resolution. The capability to obtain arc-minutes resolution characterization in a short measuring time is hence a driving concept for an efficient Cherenkov mirror qualification facility. The first facility implemented by INAF-OAB for Cherenkov optics is an outdoor 2f optical bench. Nevertheless, the 2f optical method permits to manage exclusively focusing optics. On the other hand, the introduction of novel optical design for Cherenkov telescopes, like the Schwarzschild–Couder design, creates the necessity to qualify free-form non-focusing optics. For this reason the INAF-OAB developed a flexible deflectometry setup capable to qualify any kind of Cherenkov optics. In this contribution we will describe these facilities, present some measurement results and discuss the wide range of possible applications they offer. • Qualification facilities developed at INAF-OAB for Cherenkov mirrors qualification. • Optical facility working in 2f configuration for the study of spherical mirrors PSF. • Deflectometry facility for free-form mirrors surface metrology. The pSCT is based on a novel dual mirror optics design which reduces the plate scale and allows for the use of silicon photomultipliers as photodetectors. The prototype pSCT camera currently has only the central sector instrumented with 25 camera modules (1600 pixels), providing a 2.68$^{\circ}$ field of view (FoV). The camera electronics are based on custom TARGET (TeV array readout with GSa/s sampling and event trigger) application specific integrated circuits. Field programmable gate arrays sample incoming signals at a gigasample per second. A single backplane provides camera-wide triggers. An upgrade of the pSCT camera is in progress, which will fully populate the focal plane. This will increase the number of pixels to 11,328, the number of backplanes to 9, and the FoV to 8.04$^{\circ}$. Abstract: During the last years, a number of telescopes and instruments have been dedicated to the follow-up of GRBs: recent studies of the prompt emission (see for instance GRB080319B) and of their afterglows, evidenced a series of phenomena that do not fit very well within the standard fireball model. In those cases, optical observations were fundamental to distinguish among different emission mechanisms and models. In particular, simultaneous observation in various optical filters became essential to understand the physics, and we discovered the need to have a detailed high time resolution follow up. Finally, recent observations of the polarization in GRB 090102 clearly indicate the presence of an ordered magnetic field favoring the electromagnetic outflows models. This is, however, only one case and, in order to detail properly the model, we need a bit of statistics. But, after the Swift launch, the average observed intensity of GRB afterglows showed to be lower than thought before. Robotic telescopes, as demonstrated by REM, ROTSE, TAROT, etc. (but see also the GROND set up) is clearly the winning strategy. Indeed, as we will also briefly discuss later on, the understanding of the prompt emission mechanism depends on the observations covering the first few hundreds seconds since the beginning of the event with high temporal resolution. To tackle these problems and track down a realistic model, we started the conceptual design and phase A study of a 4 meter class, fast-pointing telescope (40 sec on target), equipped with multichannel imagers, from Visible to Near Infrared (Codevisir/Pathos). In the study we explored all the different parts of the project, from the telescope to the instrumental suite to data managing and analysis, to the dome and site issue. Contacts with industry have been fruitful in understanding the actual feasibility of building such a complex machine and no show stoppers have been identified, even if some critical points should be better addressed in the Phase B study. In this paper, we present the main results of the feasibility study we performed.

Abstract: The Euclid Near-Infrared Spectrometer (E-NIS) Instrument was conceived as the spectroscopic probe on-board the ESA Dark Energy Mission Euclid. Together with the Euclid Imaging Channel (EIC) in its Visible (VIS) and Near Infrared (NIP) declinations, NIS formed part of the Euclid Mission Concept derived in assessment phase and submitted to the Cosmic Vision Down-selection process from which emerged selected and with extremely high ranking. The Definition phase, started a few months ago, is currently examining a substantial re-arrangement of the payload configuration due to technical and programmatic aspects. Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the pulpo-dentin complex response to a dentin adhesive application in deep cavities performed in human teeth., Methods: Deep class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 46 premolars. The remaining dentin of the axial wall received 10% phosphoric acid and dentin adhesive (group DA), or was protected before the acid and dentin adhesive application with calcium hydroxide cement (group CH). Half of the teeth, which received the acid application directly over the axial wall, were contaminated prior to the procedures with dental plaque collected from the patient's own teeth (group DAC). The plaque was placed on the dentin for 5 min and then the cavity was washed. All teeth were restored with a light-cured composite resin. The teeth were extracted after 7, 30 or 60 days and prepared according to normal histologic techniques. Serial sections were stained with H/E, Masson's trichrome and Brown & Brenn technique for demonstration of bacteria., Results: The histopathologic evaluation showed that in groups DA and DAC, the inflammatory response was more evident than in group CH. Also, the intensity of the pulp reaction increased as the remaining dentin thickness decreased. There was no statistical difference in the inflammatory response between the groups DA and DAC., Conclusion: Based on the experimental conditions, we concluded that the All Bond 2 adhesive system, when applied on dentin in deep cavities, showed an acceptable biocompatibility. However, the intensity of the pulpo-dentin complex response depends on the remaining dentin thickness.

Abstract: Human pulp tissue was directly capped with All Bond 2, or calcium hydroxide and evaluated 7, 30, or 60 days after the procedures. Histological analysis was performed to assess the inflammatory cell response, tissue disorganization, dentin bridging, and the presence of bacteria. At 7 days, with All Bond 2 capping, there was a large area of neutrophilic infiltrate underlying the pulp capping material, and the death of adjacent odontoblasts, was observed. However, with time, the neutrophilic reaction was replaced by fibroblastic proliferation with macrophages and giant cells surrounding globules of resin scattered in the coronal pulp tissue. The persistent inflammatory reaction and hyaline alteration of extracellular matrix inhibited complete pulp repair or dentin bridging. In contrast, at 7 days, the pulp tissue capped with calcium hydroxide exhibited odontoblast-like cells organized underneath coagulation necrosis. Pulp repair evolved into apparent complete dentin bridge formation at 60 days. All Bond 2 did not appear to allow any pulp repair and does not appear to be indicated for direct pulp capping of human teeth.

324. [Effectiveness of the concentrator as a supply source in home oxygen therapy].

Abstract: The oxygen concentrator is an effective supply source in home oxygen-therapy (HO). In order to study the effectivity of the concentrator in HO, we visited at home 31 patients using the concentrator as the only oxygen supply source in the exit gas and counted the hours of concentrator usage. Only 13 concentrators (41.9%) supplied a percentage of oxygen higher than 87% at a flow of two liters per minute. In three cases (9.7%), sporadic control measures of the percentage of oxygen in the exit gas were being taken and only four patients (12.9%) said that these controls were made monthly. The concentrator did not supply the adequate percentage of oxygen in 12 out of the 29 patients correctly taking the HO, so the effectivity of the treatment can only be expected in 28.6% of studied cases. The concentrator operates well under ideal conditions, but potential breakdowns in standard conditions of use must be considered. The efficiency of the HO with concentrator in our environment is very low, but it can be improved with regular controls of the concentrators or the introduction of devices warning the patient when they detect a reduction of the percentage of oxygen in the exit gas.

Abstract: A therapeutic trial with mannose given intravenously as a 5% solution during 7 consecutive days (daily doses 12.5 g, 25 g and 50 g) was performed in a GPI deficient girl with nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia. The aim of the trial was to substitute glucose--the main red cells metabolic substrate--with mannose, since the glucose metabolism, due to the GPI deficiency, was significantly decreased. An initial good effect of treatment was disturbed with viral infection. No complications due to treatment with mannose were observed.
