In a canonical model, the progenitors of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are accreting, nuclear-burning white dwarfs (NBWDs), which explode when the white dwarf reaches the Chandrasekhar mass, M_C. Such massive NBWDs are hot (kT ~100 eV), luminous (L ~ 10^{38} erg/s), and are potentially observable as luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs). During the past several years, surveys for soft X-ray sources in external galaxies have been conducted. This paper shows that the results falsify the hypothesis that a large fraction of progenitors are NBWDs which are presently observable as SSSs. The data also place limits on sub-M_C models. While Type Ia supernova progenitors may pass through one or more phases of SSS activity, these phases are far shorter than the time needed to accrete most of the matter that brings them close to M_C., Comment: submitted to ApJ 18 November 2009; 17 pages, 2 figures

A survey that can cover the sky in optical bands over wide fields to faint magnitudes with a fast cadence will enable many of the exciting science opportunities of the next decade. The Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will have an effective aperture of 6.7 meters and an imaging camera with field of view of 9.6 deg^2, and will be devoted to a ten-year imaging survey over 20,000 deg^2 south of +15 deg. Each pointing will be imaged 2000 times with fifteen second exposures in six broad bands from 0.35 to 1.1 microns, to a total point-source depth of r~27.5. The LSST Science Book describes the basic parameters of the LSST hardware, software, and observing plans. The book discusses educational and outreach opportunities, then goes on to describe a broad range of science that LSST will revolutionize: mapping the inner and outer Solar System, stellar populations in the Milky Way and nearby galaxies, the structure of the Milky Way disk and halo and other objects in the Local Volume, transient and variable objects both at low and high redshift, and the properties of normal and active galaxies at low and high redshift. We report the most accurate X-ray position of the X-ray source in the giant globular cluster G1 in M31 by using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, Hubble Space Telescope (HST), and Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). G1 is clearly detected with Chandra and by cross-registering with HST and CFHT images, we derive a 1-sigma error radius of 0.15 arcsec, significantly smaller than the previous measurement by XMM-Newton. We conclude that the X-ray emission of G1 is likely to come from within the core radius of the cluster. We have considered a number of possibilities for the origin of the X-ray emission but can rule all but two scenarios out: it could be due to either accretion onto a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH), or an ordinary low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). Based on the X-ray luminosity and the Bondi accretion rate, an IMBH accreting from the cluster gas seems unlikely and we suggest that the X-rays are due to accretion from a companion. Alternatively, the probability that a 1.5 solar masses cluster LMXB lies within the 95 per cent X-ray error circle is about 0.7. Therefore we cannot rule out a single LMXB as the origin of the X-ray emission. While we cannot distinguish between different models with current observations, future high-resolution and high-sensitivity radio imaging observations will reveal whether there is an IMBH at the centre of G1., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Observations of hundreds of supersoft x-ray sources (SSSs) in external galaxies have shed light on the diversity of the class and on the natures of the sources. SSSs are linked to the physics of Type Ia supernovae and accretion-induced collapse, ultraluminous x-ray sources and black holes, the ionization of the interstellar medium, and tidal disruption by supermassive black holes. The class of SSSs has an extension to higher luminosities: ultraluminous SSSs have luminosities above 10^39 erg/s. There is also an extension to higher energies: quasisoft x-ray sources (QSSs) emit photons with energies above 1 eV, but few or none with energies above 2 keV. Finally, a significant fraction of the SSSs found in external galaxies switch states between observations, becoming either quasisoft or hard. For many systems ``supersoft'' refers to a temporary state; SSSs are sources, possibly including a variety of fundamentally different system types, that pass through such a state. The physical properties of galactic cirrus emission are not well characterized. BOOMERanG is a balloon-borne experiment designed to study the cosmic microwave background at high angular resolution in the millimeter range. The BOOMERanG 245 and 345GHz channels are sensitive to interstellar signals, in a spectral range intermediate between FIR and microwave frequencies. We look for physical characteristics of cirrus structures in a region at high galactic latitudes (b~-40{\deg}) where BOOMERanG performed its deepest integration, combining the BOOMERanG data with other available datasets at different wavelengths. We have detected eight emission patches in the 345 GHz map, consistent with cirrus dust in the Infrared Astronomical Satellite maps. The analysis technique we have developed allows to identify the location and the shape of cirrus clouds, and to extract the flux from observations with different instruments at different wavelengths and angular resolutions. We study the integrated flux emitted from these cirrus clouds using data from Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS), DIRBE, BOOMERanG and Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) in the frequency range 23-3000 GHz (13 mm 100 micron wavelength). We fit the measured spectral energy distributions with a combination of a grey body and a power-law spectra considering two models for the thermal emission. The temperature of the thermal dust component varies in the 7 - 20 K range and its emissivity spectral index is in the 1 - 5 range. We identified a physical relation between temperature and spectral index as had been proposed in previous works. e study theoretically, the photoluminescence properties of a single quantum dot in a microcavity under incoherent excitation. We propose a microscopic quantum statistical approach providing a Lindblad (thus completely positive) description of pumping and decay mechanisms of the quantum dot and of the cavity mode. Our analytical results show that strong coupling (SC) and linewidths are largely independent on the pumping intensity (until saturation effects come into play), in contrast to previous theoretical findings. We shall show the reliable predicting character of our theoretical framework in the analysis of various recent experiments.

The Dirac equation provides a description of spin 1/2 particles, consistent with both the principles of quantum mechanics and of special relativity. Often its presentation to students is based on mathematical propositions that may hide the physical meaning of its contents. Here we show that Dirac spinors provide the quantum description of two unit classical vectors: one whose components are the speed of an elementary particle and the rate of change of its proper time and a second vector which fixes the velocity direction. In this context both the spin degree of freedom and antiparticles can be understood from the rotation symmetry of these unit vectors. Within this approach the Dirac Lagrangian acquires a direct physical meaning as the quantum operator describing the total time-derivative.

We use Minkowski Functionals (MF) to constrain a primordial non-Gaussian contribution to the CMB intensity field as observed in the 150 GHz and 145 GHz BOOMERanG maps from the 1998 and 2003 flights, respectively, performing for the first time a joint analysis of the two datasets. A perturbative expansion of the MF formulae in the limit of a weakly non-Gaussian field yields analytical formulae, derived by Hikage et al. (2006), which can be used to constrain the coupling parameter f_NL without the need for non-Gaussian simulations. We find -1020

A new design of a cryogenic germanium detector for dark matter search is presented, taking advantage of the coplanar grid technique of event localisation for improved background discrimination. Experiments performed with prototype devices in the EDELWEISS II setup at the Modane underground facility demonstrate the remarkably high efficiency of these devices for the rejection of low-energy $\beta$, approaching 10$^5$ . This opens the road to investigate the range beyond 10$^{-8}$ pb in the WIMP-nucleon collision cross-sections, as proposed in the EURECA project of a one-ton cryogenic detector mass., Comment: submitted to Physical Review Letters

The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect is the inverse Compton-scattering of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by hot electrons in the intervening gas throughout the universe. The effect has a distinct spectral signature that allows its separation from other signals in multifrequency CMB datasets. Using CMB anisotropies measured at three frequencies by the BOOMERanG 2003 flight we constrain SZ fluctuations in the 10 arcmin to 1 deg angular range. Propagating errors and potential systematic effects through simulations, we obtain an overall upper limit of 15.3 uK (2 sigma) for rms SZ fluctuations in a broad bin between multipoles of of 250 and 1200 at the Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) end of the spectrum. When combined with other CMB anisotropy and SZ measurements, we find that the local universe normalization of the density perturbations is sigma-8(SZ) < 0.96 at the 95% confidence level, consistent with sigma-8 determined from primordial perturbations., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ. Workshop RPSCINT'2008 was organized in Kyiv (Ukraine) on 9th and 10th September 2008. The idea was to bring together physicists, chemists, crystal scintillator experts and manufacturers to discuss the requirements of low-count rate experiments, in particular the required radiopurity and scintillation properties; selection and screening of input materials; purification of materials; raw compound preparation; crystal growing, annealing and handling; test of crystals; search for and development of new scintillating materials. Over the next decade, we can expect time domain astronomy to flourish at optical and radio wavelengths. In parallel with these efforts, a dedicated transient "machine" operating at higher energies (X-ray band through soft gamma-rays) is required to reveal the unique subset of events with variable emission predominantly visible above 100 eV. Here we focus on the transient phase space never yet sampled due to the lack of a sensitive, wide-field and triggering facility dedicated exclusively to catching high energy transients and enabling rapid coordinated multi-wavelength follow-up. We first describe the advancements in our understanding of known X-ray transients that can only be enabled through such a facility and then focus on the classes of transients theoretically predicted to be out of reach of current detection capabilities. We show theoretically that polariton pairs with a high degree of polarization entanglement can be produced through parametric scattering. We demonstrate that it can emerge in coincidence experiments, even at low excitation densities where the dynamics is dominated by incoherent photoluminesce. Our analysis is based on a microscopic quantum statistical approach that treats coherent and incoherent processes on an equal footing, thus allowing for a quantitative assessment of the amount of entanglement under realistic experimental conditions. Spin of elementary particles is the only kinematic degree of freedom not having classical corre- spondence. It arises when seeking for the finite-dimensional representations of the Lorentz group, which is the only symmetry group of relativistic quantum field theory acting on multiple-component quantum fields non-unitarily. We study linear transformations, acting on the space of spatial and proper-time velocities rather than on coordinates. While ensuring the relativistic in- variance, they avoid these two exceptions: they describe the spin degree of freedom of a pointlike particle yet at a classical level and form a compact group hence with unitary finite-dimensional rep- resentations. Within this approach changes of the velocity modulus and direction can be accounted for by rotations of two independent unit vectors. Dirac spinors just provide the quantum description of these rotations.

Ultraluminous supersoft X-ray sources (ULSSS) exhibit supersoft spectra with blackbody temperatures of 50-100 eV and bolometric luminosities above $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and are possibly intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) of $\ge10^3 M_\odot$ or massive white dwarfs that are progenitors of type Ia supernovae. In this letter we report our optical studies of such a source in M81, M81-ULS1, with HST archive observations. M81-ULS1 is identified with a point-like object, the spectral energy distribution of which reveals a blue component in addition to the companion of an AGB star. The blue component is consistent with the power-law as expected from the geometrically-thin accretion disk around an IMBH accretor, but inconsistent with the power-law as expected from the X-ray irradiated flared accretion disk around a white dwarf accretor. This paper is devoted to exploring how we can discover and study nearby (< 1-2 kpc) planetary and binary systems by observing their action as gravitational lenses. Lensing can extend the realm of nearby binaries and planets that can be systematically studied to include dark and dim binaries, and face-on systems. As with more traditional studies, which use light from the system, orbital parameters (including the total mass, mass ratio, and orbital separation) can be extracted from lensing data, Also in common with these traditional methods, individual systems can be targeted for study. We demonstrate that gravitational lensing can be used to discover and study planets in the habitable zones of nearby dwarf stars. If appropriate software is developed, a new generation of monitoring programs will automatically conduct a census of nearby planets in the habitable zones of dwarf stars. In addition, individual nearby dwarf stars can produce lensing events at predictable times; careful monitoring of these events can discover any planets located in the zone of habitability. Because lensing can discover planets (1) in face-on orbits, and (2) in orbit around the dimmest stars, lensing techniques will provide complementary information to that gleaned through Doppler and/or transit investigations. Nearby masses can have a high probability of lensing stars in a distant background field. High-probability lensing, or mesolensing, can therefore be used to dramatically increase our knowledge of dark and dim objects in the solar neighborhood, where it can discover and study members of the local dark population (free-floating planets, low-mass dwarfs, white dwarfs, neutron stars, and stellar mass black holes). We can measure the mass and transverse velocity of those objects discovered (or already known), and determine whether or not they are in binaries with dim companions. We explore these and other applications of mesolensing, including the study of forms of matter that have been hypothesized but not discovered, such as intermediate-mass black holes, dark matter objects free-streaming through the Galactic disk, and planets in the outermost regions of the solar system. We analyze large sets of energy-release data created by stress-induced brittle fracture in a pure sapphire crystal at close to zero temperature where stochastic fluctuations are minimal. The waiting-time distribution follows that observed for fracture in rock and for earthquakes. Despite strong time correlations of the events and the presence of large-event precursors, simple prediction algorithms only succeed in a very weak probabilistic sense. We present a systematic theory of Coulomb-induced correlation effects in the nonlinear optical processes within the strong-coupling regime. In this paper we shall set a dynamics controlled truncation scheme \cite{Axt Stahl} microscopic treatment of nonlinear parametric processes in SMCs including the electromagnetic field quantization. It represents the starting point for the microscopic approach to quantum optics experiments in the strong coupling regime without any assumption on the quantum statistics of electronic excitations (excitons) involved. We exploit a previous technique, used in the semiclassical context, which, once applied to four-wave mixing in quantum wells, allowed to understand a wide range of observed phenomena \cite{Sham PRL95}. We end up with dynamical equations for exciton and photon operators which extend the usual semiclassical description of Coulomb interaction effects, in terms of a mean-field term plus a genuine non-instantaneous four-particle correlation, to quantum optical effects., Comment: preprint version, no figures an entire section added

We analyze the BOOMERanG 2003 (B03) 145 GHz temperature map to constrain the amplitude of a non Gaussian, primordial contribution to CMB fluctuations. We perform a pixel space analysis restricted to a portion of the map chosen in view of high sensitivity, very low foreground contamination and tight control of systematic effects. We set up an estimator based on the three Minkowski functionals which relies on high quality simulated data, including non Gaussian CMB maps. We find good agreement with the Gaussian hypothesis and derive the first limits based on BOOMERanG data for the non linear coupling parameter f_NL as -300

Binary microlensing light curves have a variety of morphologies. Many are indistinguishable from point lens light curves. Of those that deviate from the point lens form, caustic crossing light curves have tended to dominate identified binary lens events. Other distinctive signatures of binary lenses include significant asymmetry, multiple peaks, and repeating events. We have quantified, using high resolution simulations, the theoretically expected relative numbers of each type of binary lens event, based on its measurable characteristics. We find that a microlensing survey with current levels of photometric uncertainty and sampling should find at least as many non-caustic crossing binary lens events as caustic crossing events; in future surveys with more sensitive photometry, the contribution of distinctive non-caustic crossing events will be even greater. Recently the possibility of generating nonclassical polariton states by means of parametric scattering has been demonstrated. Excitonic polaritons propagate in a complex interacting environment and contain real electronic excitations subject to scattering events and noise affecting quantum coherence and entanglement. Here we present a general theoretical framework for the realistic investigation of polariton quantum correlations in the presence of coherent and incoherent interaction processes. The proposed theoretical approach is based on the {\em nonequilibrium quantum Langevin approach for open systems} applied to interacting-electron complexes described within the dynamics controlled truncation scheme. It provides an easy recipe to calculate multi-time correlation functions which are key-quantities in quantum optics. We theoretically analyze the carrier capture and distribution among the available energy levels of a symmetric semiconductor quantum dot under continuous-wave excitation resonant with the barrier energy levels. At low temperature all the dot level-occupations but one decrease monotonically with energy. The uncovered exception, corresponding to the second (dark) energy level, displays a steady-state carrier density exceeding that of the lowest level more than a factor two. The root cause is not radiative recombination before relaxation to lower energy levels, but at the opposite, carrier trapping due to the symmetry-induced suppression of radiative recombination. This paper presents our interpretation and understanding of the different backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I data sets. We analyze in detail the several populations observed, which include gammas, alphas, neutrons, thermal sensor events and surface events, and try to combine all data sets to provide a coherent picture of the nature and localisation of the background sources. In light of this interpretation, we draw conclusions regarding the background suppression scheme for the EDELWEISS-II phase.

We report the discovery of an eclipsing X-ray binary in M101, the first such system to be discovered outside the Local Group. Based on a sequence of 25 Chandra observations that sample a wide range of orbital phases, we find a period of 32.688 $\pm$ 0.002 hours, which we interpret as an orbital period. The folded light curve exhibits an eclipse lasting about 8 hours, suggesting a compact orbit in an nearly edge-on configuration. The X-ray binary has an average luminosity of $L_X(0.3-8 {\rm keV}) \approx 1.3\times10^{38}$ erg/sec, with only one out of the 25 observations significantly lower in flux than the average light curve.The presence of the eclipse and the $\sim$ 1.4-day orbital period suggests that this source is an analog of the well studied eclipsing X-ray binary pulsars Her X-1 or LMC X-4. Combining the Chandra data and the HST ACS/WFC images, we have identified several possible optical counterparts, including an O5-O3 star with V = 25.0. The heat quenching factor Q' (the ratio of the heat signals produced by nuclear and electron recoils of equal energy) of the heat-and-ionization germanium bolometers used by the EDELWEISS collaboration has been measured. It is explained how this factor affects the energy scale and the effective quenching factor observed in calibrations with neutron sources. This effective quenching effect is found to be equal to Q/Q', where Q is the quenching factor of the ionization yield. To measure Q', a precise EDELWEISS measurement of Q/Q' is combined with values of Q obtained from a review of all available measurements of this quantity in tagged neutron beam experiments. The systematic uncertainties associated with this method to evaluate Q' are discussed in detail. For recoil energies between 20 and 100 keV, the resulting heat quenching factor is Q' = 0.91+-0.03+-0.04, where the two errors are the contributions from the Q and Q/Q' measurements, respectively. The present compilation of Q values and evaluation of Q' represent one of the most precise determinations of the absolute energy scale for any detector used in direct searches for dark matter., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. XMM-Newton and Chandra have ushered in a new era for the study of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. We provide an overview of the opportunities, challenges, and some early results. The large number of background sources relative to galaxy sources is a major theme. Despite this challenge, the identification of counterparts has been possible, providing hints that the same mechanisms producing X-ray sources in larger galaxies are active in dwarf galaxies. A supersoft X-ray source within 2" of the supermassive black hole in M32 may be a remnant of the tidal disruption of a giant, although other explanations cannot be ruled out., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, proceedings for 2004 IAU symposium

First discovered in the Magellanic Clouds and in the Milky Way, the largest pools of luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs) now known lie in M31 and in more distant galaxies. Hundreds of newly-discovered SSSs are helping us to test models for Type Ia supernovae and to identify SSSs that may represent a wider range of physical systems, including accreting intermediate-mass black holes. In a variety of astronomical situations, there is a relatively high probability that a single isolated lens will produce a detectable event. The high probability is caused by some combination of a large Einstein angle, fast angular motion, and a dense background field. We refer to high-probability lenses as mesolenses. The mesolensing regime is complementary to the regime in which the optical depth is high, in that it applies to isolated lenses instead of to dense lens fields. Mesolensing is complementary to microlensing, because it is well suited to the study of different lens populations, and also because different observing and analysis strategies are required to optimize the discovery and study of mesolenses. Planetary and stellar masses located within 1-2 kpc are examples of mesolenses. We show that their presence can be detected against a wide variety of background fields, using distinctive signatures of both time variability and spatial effects. Time signatures can be identical to those of microlensing, but can also include baseline jitter, extreme apparent chromaticity, events well fit by lens models in which several independent sources are simultaneously lensed, and sequences of events. Spatial signatures include astrometric lensing of surface brightness fluctuations, as well as patterns of time variability that sweep across the background field as the lens moves. Wide-field monitoring programs, such as Pan-STARRS and LSST, are well-suited to the study of mesolensing. We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of a new outburst of an ultra-luminous X-ray source in M101. During a Chandra monitoring observation of M101, M101 ULX-1 was found to be in outburst in 2004 December, the second outburst in 2004. The peak bolometric luminosity is about 3e40 erg/s (7e39 erg/s in 0.3-7 keV). The outburst spectra are very soft and can generally be fitted with a blackbody model with temperatures of 40-80 eV, similar to supersoft X-ray sources in the Milky Way and in the Magellanic Clouds. In one Chandra observation, the source spectrum appears to be harder with a temperature of 150 eV. Such a spectral state is rarely seen in M101 ULX-1 and no X-ray source in the Milky Way shows this kind of spectrum. However, such an unusual spectral state very likely belongs to a new class of X-ray sources, quasisoft X-ray sources, recently discovered in nearby galaxies. M101 ULX-1 returned to supersoft state in a subsequent XMM-Newton observation. Based on the two outbursts in 2004, the extremely high luminosity (L_bol=1e40-1e41 erg/s), very soft X-ray spectra (kT=40-150 eV), transient behavior, and state transition provide strong evidence that M101 ULX-1 harbors an intermediate-mass black hole., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present a measurement of the temperature-polarization angular cross power spectrum, , of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The result is based on $\sim 200$ hours of data from 8 polarization sensitive bolometers operating at 145 GHz during the 2003 flight of BOOMERANG. We detect a significant correlation in the $\ell$-range between 50 and 950 with a statistical significance > 3.5 sigma. Contamination by polarized foreground emission and systematic effects are negligible in comparison with statistical uncertainty. The spectrum is consistent with previous detections and with the "concordance model" that assumes adiabatic initial conditions. We report on observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) obtained during the January 2003 flight of Boomerang . These results are derived from 195 hours of observation with four 145 GHz Polarization Sensitive Bolometer (PSB) pairs, identical in design to the four 143 GHz Planck HFI polarized pixels. The data include 75 hours of observations distributed over 1.84% of the sky with an additional 120 hours concentrated on the central portion of the field, itself representing 0.22% of the full sky. From these data we derive an estimate of the angular power spectrum of temperature fluctuations of the CMB in 24 bands over the multipole range (50 < l < 1500). A series of features, consistent with those expected from acoustic oscillations in the primordial photon-baryon fluid, are clearly evident in the power spectrum, as is the exponential damping of power on scales smaller than the photon mean free path at the epoch of last scattering (l > 900). As a consistency check, the collaboration has performed two fully independent analyses of the time ordered data, which are found to be in excellent agreement., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. We present the cosmological parameters from the CMB intensity and polarization power spectra of the 2003 Antarctic flight of the BOOMERANG telescope. The BOOMERANG data alone constrains the parameters of the $\Lambda$CDM model remarkably well and is consistent with constraints from a multi-experiment combined CMB data set. We add LSS data from the 2dF and SDSS redshift surveys to the combined CMB data set and test several extensions to the standard model including: running of the spectral index, curvature, tensor modes, the effect of massive neutrinos, and an effective equation of state for dark energy. We report measurements of the CMB polarization power spectra from the January 2003 Antarctic flight of BOOMERANG. The primary results come from six days of observation of a patch covering 0.22% of the sky centered near R.A. = 82.5 deg., Dec= -45 deg. The observations were made using four pairs of polarization sensitive bolometers operating in bands centered at 145 GHz. Using two independent analysis pipelines, we measure a non-zero signal in the range 100< l <1000 with a significance 4.8-sigma, a 2-sigma upper limit of 8.6 uK^2 for any contribution, and a 2-sigma upper limit of 7.0 uK^2 for the spectrum. Estimates of foreground intensity fluctuations and the non-detection of and signals rule out any significant contribution from galactic foregrounds. The results are consistent with a Lambda-CDM cosmology seeded by adiabatic perturbations. We present the BOOMERanG-03 experiment and maps of the Stokes parameters I, Q, U of the microwave sky obtained during a 14 day balloon flight in 2003. Three regions of the southern sky were surveyed: a deep survey (~ 90 square degrees) and a shallow survey (~ 750 square degrees) at high Galactic latitudes (both centered at RA ~ 5.5 h, dec ~ -45 deg) and a survey of ~ 300 square degrees across the Galactic plane at RA ~ 9.1 h, dec ~ -47 deg. All three surveys were carried out in three wide frequency bands centered at 145, 245 and 345 GHz, with an angular resolution of ~ 10'. The 145 GHz maps of Stokes I are dominated by Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy, which is mapped with high signal to noise ratio. The measured anisotropy pattern is consistent with the pattern measured in the same region by BOOMERanG-98 and by WMAP. The 145 GHz maps of Stokes Q and U provide a robust statistical detection of polarization of the CMB when subjected to a power spectrum analysis. This amplitude of the polarization is consistent with that of the CMB in the $\Lambda$CDM cosmological scenario. At 145 GHz, in the CMB surveys, the intensity and polarization of the astrophysical foregrounds are found to be negligible with respect to the cosmological signal. At 245 and 345 GHz we detect ISD emission correlated to the 3000 GHz IRAS/DIRBE maps, and give upper limits for any other non-CMB component. We also present intensity maps of the surveyed section of the Galactic plane. In the early stages of running of the CRESST dark matter search using sapphire detectors at very low temperature, an unexpectedly high rate of signal pulses appeared. Their origin was finally traced to fracture events in the sapphire due to the very tight clamping of the detectors. During extensive runs the energy and time of each event was recorded, providing large data sets for such phenomena. We believe this is the first time the energy release in fracture has been directly and accurately measured on a microscopic event-by-event basis. The energy threshold corresponds to the breaking of only a few hundred covalent bonds, a sensitivity some orders of magnitude greater than that of previous technique. We report some features of the data, including energy distributions, waiting time distributions, autocorrelations and the Hurst exponent. The energy distribution appear to follow a power law, $dN/dE\propto E^{-\beta}$, similar to the power law for earthquake magnitudes, and after appropriate translation, with a similar exponent. In the time domain,the waiting time $w$ or gap distribution between events has a power law behavior at small $w$ and an exponential fall-off at large $w,$ and can be fit $\propto w^{-\alpha}e^{-w/w_0}$. The autocorrelation function shows time correlations lasting for substantial parts of an hour. An asymmetry is found around large events, with higher count rates after, as opposed to before,the large event ., Comment: Fig 4 and surrounding discussion changed. We report the results of Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of an ultra-luminous supersoft X-ray source in M101. M101 ULX-1 underwent 2 outbursts in 2004 during which the peak bolometric luminosities reached 1e41 erg/s. The outburst spectra were very soft and can generally be fitted with a blackbody model with temperatures of 50-160 eV. In two of the observations, absorption edges at 0.33 keV, 0.56 keV, 0.66 keV, and 0.88 keV were found. A cool accretion disk was also found in the 2004 December outburst. During the low luminosity state, a power-law tail was seen up to 7 keV. It is clear the source changed from a low/hard state to a high/soft state. In addition, it showed at least 5 outbursts between 1996 and 2004. This is the first ultra-luminous X-ray source for which recurrent outbursts with state transitions similar to Galactic X-ray binaries have been observed. From the Hubble Space Telescope data, we found an optical counterpart to the source. During the 2004 outbursts, we also performed radio and ground-based optical observations. The final results of the EDELWEISS-I dark matter search using cryogenic heat-and-ionization Ge detectors are presented. The final data sample corresponds to an increase by a factor five in exposure relative to the previously published results. A recoil energy threshold of 13 keV or better was achieved with three 320g detectors working simultaneously over four months of stable operation. Limits on the spin-independent cross-section for the scattering of a WIMP on a nucleon are derived from an accumulated fiducial exposure of 62 kg.d., Comment: 42 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Physical Review D, 1 figure and 2 references added, some little changes in the text

We investigate the influence of environmental noise on polarization entangled light generated by parametric emission in a cavity. By adopting a recently developed separability criterion, we show that: i) self-stimulation may suppress the detrimental influence of noise on entanglement; ii) when self-stimulation becomes effective, a classical model of parametric emission incorporating noise provides the same results of quantum theory for the expectation values involved in the separability criterion. Moreover we show that, in the macroscopic limit, it is impossible to observe violations of local realism with measurements of $n$-particle correlations, whatever n but finite. These results provide an interesting example of the emergence of macroscopic local realism in the presence of strong entanglement even in the absence of decoherence., Comment: 1 figure
