A tunable synthesis of iron nanoparticles (NPs) based on the decomposition of {Fe[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2)}(2) in the presence of organic superstructures composed of palmitic acid and hexadecylamine is reported. Control of the size (from 1.5 to 27 nm) and shape (spheres, cubes, or stars) of the NPs has been achieved. An environment-dependent growth model is proposed on the basis of results obtained for the NP morphology under various conditions and a complete Mossbauer study of the colloid composition at different reacting stages. It involves (i) an anisotropic growth process inside organic superstructures, leading to monocrystalline cubic NPs, and (ii) isotropic growth outside these superstructures, yielding polycrystalline spherical NPs.

Metallic Ru, Rh, and Ir nanoparticles were prepared by the decomposition of organometallic precursors under H(2) pressure in the presence of 1,3-diphosphite ligands, derived from carbohydrates, as stabilizing agents. Structural modifications to the diphosphite backbone were found to influence the nanoparticles' size, dispersion, and catalytic activity. In the hydrogenation of o- and m-methylanisole, the Rh nanoparticles showed higher catalytic activity than the corresponding Ru nanoparticles. The Ir nanoparticles presented the lowest catalytic activity of the series. In all cases, the hydrogenation of o-methylanisole gave total selectivity for the cis-product, however, the ee of the product was always less than 6 %. A maximum of 81 % cis-selectivity was obtained for the hydrogenation of m-methylanisole, however, no asymmetric induction was observed. These results show that the catalytic activity is affected by a combination of influences from the substrate, the diphosphite ligands, and the metallic nanoparticles.

Best of both worlds: Reduction of an organometallic Co precursor on preformed CdSe nanorods yields two distinct semiconducting-magnetic heterostructures (see picture). The selective growth of Co on the tips of CdSe first gives nanosphere-nanorod dimers, which evolve into nanorod-nanorod structures. In the hybrid objects the magnetic properties of Co remain intact, while the luminescence properties of CdSe are affected but not completely quenched.

The (2)H solid-state NMR spectra of the transition metal complexes Tp*RuD(THT)(2) (1a), Tp*RuD(D(2))(THT) (1b), Tp*RuD(D(2))(2) (1c), Cp*RuD(3)(PPh(3)) (2) and RuD(2)(eta(2)-D(2))(2)(PCy(3))(2) (3) have been measured in a wide temperature range. These compounds were chosen as potential model systems for hydrogen surface species in Ru-nanoparticles. The deuterium quadrupolar coupling constants Q(cc) and asymmetry parameters were extracted by (2)H NMR line-shape analysis. The Q(cc) values of the deuterons bound to the metal vary between 13 kHz and 76 kHz. In addition all spectra show that some of the deuterium is incorporated into carbon positions exhibiting quadrupolar coupling constants in the range of 134 kHz to 192 kHz. The room temperature spectra contain an additional weak very narrow line which was assigned to deuterons exhibiting a high mobility. These deuterons are attributed to crystallographic impurity and partially to D(2) molecules which lost by the complexes. The temperature where their motion is quenched and the types of these motions depend on the chemical structure. We propose to use the values of the quadrupolar coupling constants measured in order to characterize different hydrogen species on the surface of Ru-nanoparticles.

Ferromagnetic nanomaterials exhibit unique magnetic properties common to materials with dimensions approaching the atomic scale and have potential applications in magnetic data storage. Technological applications, however, require that the detailed magnetic behaviors and configurations of individual and interacting magnetic nano-objects be clarified. We determined the magnetic remnant configurations in single crystalline 30 nm Fe nanocubes and groups of nanocubes using off-axis electron holography in a transmission electron microscope. Our measurements on an isolated cube reveal a vortex state whose core size has been determined. Two neighboring nanocubes with adjacent {100} surfaces exhibit a ferromagnetic dipolar coupling, while similar magnetic interactions between four cubes in a square arrangement induce a bending of the magnetic induction, i.e., a magnetic flux closure state. The various configurations were successfully simulated by micromagnetic calculations.

Maghemite (gamma-Fe(2)O(3)) nanoparticles stabilized by long-alkyl-chain amines are synthesized by using an organometallic approach. This method consists of the hydrolysis and oxidation of an organometallic precursor, Fe[N(SiMe(3))(2)](2), in the presence of amine ligands as stabilizing agent in an organic solvent, namely tetrahydrofuran or toluene. Whatever the experimental conditions, particles with a diameter of 2.8 nm are obtained. The use of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and wide-angle X-ray scattering, together with Mössbauer spectroscopy and SQuId magnetometry, allows a complete characterization of these particles. Herein, we show that their structure is composed of a well-ordered core surrounded by a more disordered shell. The size of the latter varies from 0.65 to 0.50 nm depending on the experimental conditions and is of prime importance for the understanding of the magnetic properties. We demonstrate that the shorter the alkyl chain length of the amine 1) the better the crystallinity of the particle's core and 2) the stronger the interparticle interactions.

We report in this paper the stabilization of ruthenium nanoparticles using a very simple ligand (4-(3-phenylpropyl)pyridine), through strong pi-coordination of the phenyl moiety.

Ruthenium nanoparticles (RuNPs) were prepared through the hydrogenation of [Ru(COD)(COT)] (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, COT = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene) in the presence of diphosphites derived from carbohydrates as stabilizing agents, and interestingly, structural modifications of the diphosphite backbone were found to influence nanoparticle size and dispersity, as well as their catalytic activity in arene hydrogenation.

New heterometallic Werner complexes have been synthesized by combining the cobalt cationic [Co(NH3)6]3+ species with a nitrato metal fragment [M(NO3)4](x-) (M = Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn) or with metal oxides X2MO4 (M = Mo, W and X = Na, NH4). Depending on the metals, an organic and/or a water synthetic route was developed. X-Ray data on Mn and Cu precursors have shown the versatility of nitrate ligand coordination. TDA-TGA studies have been performed to demonstrate the energetic material character. The [Co(NH3)6]x[M(NO3)4]3 complexes display a good oxygen balance and, as shown by standard sensitivity tests, are suitable for automotive applications.

The gas-phase loading of [Zn4O(bdc)3] (MOF-5; bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate) with the volatile compound [Ru(cod)(cot)] (cod = 1,5-cyclooctadiene, cot = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene) was followed by solid-state (13)C magic angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. Subsequent hydrogenolysis of the adsorbed complex inside the porous structure of MOF-5 at 3 bar and 150 degrees C was performed, yielding ruthenium nanoparticles in a typical size range of 1.5-1.7 nm, embedded in the intact MOF-5 matrix, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The adsorption of CO molecules on the obtained Ru@MOF-5 nanocomposite was followed by IR spectroscopy. Solid-state (2)H NMR measurements indicated that MOF-5 was a stabilizing support with only weak interactions with the embedded particles, as deduced from the surprisingly high mobility of the surface Ru-D species in comparison to surfactant-stabilized colloidal Ru nanoparticles of similar sizes. Surprisingly, hydrogenolysis of the [Ru(cod)(cot)]3.5@MOF-5 inclusion compound at the milder condition of 25 degrees C does not lead to the quantitative formation of Ru nanoparticles. Instead, formation of a ruthenium-cyclooctadiene complex with the arene moiety of the bdc linkers of the framework takes place, as revealed by (13)C MAS NMR, PXRD, and TEM.

Non-stoichiometric wüstite particles (Fe(1-y)O) are synthesized using the controlled room-temperature hydrolysis of the organometallic precursor {Fe[N(SiMe3)2]2}. Particles stabilized by hexadecylamine with a diameter of approximately 5 nm are obtained. For such small nanoparticles, a distorted crystallographic structure is evidenced by wide-angle X-ray scattering at room temperature and reported for the first time. The study of the magnetic properties indicates that these particles are composed of an antiferromagnetic core surrounded by a ferromagnetic shell. According to the Néel theory, we demonstrate that this shell consists of 1.5 % of Fe3+ ions ferromagnetically coupled with Fe2+ ions.

The magnetism of Co-Rh nanoparticles is investigated experimentally and theoretically. The particles (approximately 2 nm) have been synthesized by decomposition of organometallic precursors in mild conditions of pressure and temperature, under hydrogen atmosphere and in the presence of a polymer matrix. The magnetic properties are determined by SQUID, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The structural and chemical properties are characterized by wide angle X-ray scattering, transmission electronic microscopy and X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. All the studied Co-Rh clusters are magnetic with an average spin moment per atom mu that is larger than the one of macroscopic crystals or alloys with similar concentrations. The experimental results and comparison with theory suggest that the most likely chemical arrangement is a Rh core, with a Co-rich outer shell showing significant Co-Rh mixing at the interface. Measured and calculated magnetic anisotropy energies (MAEs) are found to be higher than in pure Co clusters. Moreover, one observes that the MAEs can be tuned to some extent by varying the Rh concentration. These trends are well accounted for by theory, which in addition reveals important spin and orbital moments induced at the Rh atoms as well as significant orbital moments at the Co atoms. These play a central role in the interpretation of experimental data as a function of Co-Rh content. A more detailed analysis from a local perspective shows that the orbital and spin moments at the Co-Rh interface are largely responsible for the enhancement of the magnetic moments and magnetic anisotropy.

We report on magnetotransport measurements on millimetric superlattices of Co-Fe nanoparticles surrounded by an organic layer. At low temperature, the transition between the Coulomb blockade and the conductive regime becomes abrupt and hysteretic. The transition between both regimes can be induced by a magnetic field, leading to a novel mechanism of magnetoresistance. Between 1.8 and 10 K, a high-field magnetoresistance attributed to magnetic disorder at the surface of the particles is also observed. Below 1.8 K, this magnetoresistance abruptly collapses and a low-field magnetoresistance is observed.

Protonation of the ortho-metalated ruthenium complexes RuH(H(2))(X)(P(i)Pr(3))(2) [X = 2-phenylpyridine (ph-py) (1), benzoquinoline (bq) (2)] and RuH(CO)(ph-py)(P(i)Pr(3))(2) (3) with [H(OEt(2))(2)](+)[BAr'(4)](-) (BAr'(4) = [(3,5-(CF(3))(2)C(6)H(3))(4)B]) under H(2) atmosphere yields the corresponding cationic hydrido dihydrogen ruthenium complexes [RuH(H(2))(H-X)(P(i)Pr(3))(2)][BAr'(4)] [X = phenylpyridine (ph-py) (1-H); benzoquinoline (bq) (2-H)] and the carbonyl complex [RuH(CO)(H-ph-py)(P(i)Pr(3))(2)][BAr'(4)] (3-H). The complexes accommodate an agostic C H interaction characterized by NMR and in the case of 1-H by x-ray diffraction. Fluxional processes involve the hydride and dihydrogen ligands in 1-H and 2-H and the rotation of the phenyl ring displaying the agostic interaction in 1-H and 3-H. NMR studies (lineshape analysis of the temperature-dependent NMR spectra) and density functional theory calculations are used to understand these processes. Under vacuum, one equivalent of dihydrogen can be removed from 1-H and 2-H leading to the formation of the corresponding cationic ortho-metalated complexes [Ru(H(2))(THF)(X)(P(i)Pr(3))(2)](+) [X = ph-py (1-THF), bq (2-THF)]. The reaction is fully reversible. Density functional theory calculations and NMR data give information about the reversible mechanism of C H activation in these ortho-metalated ruthenium complexes. Our study highlights the subtle interplay between key ligands such as hydrides, sigma-dihydrogen, and agostic bonds, in C H activation processes.

Polytetrahedral NiFe nanoparticles with diameters of (2.8+/-0.3) nm have been obtained by hydrogenation of Ni[(COD)(2)] (COD=1,5-cyclooctadiene) and Fe[{N(SiMe(3))(2)}(2)] at 150 degrees C using stearic acid and hexadecylamine as stabilizing ligands. The nanoparticles are superparamagnetic at room temperature and display a blocking temperature of 17.6 K. Their anisotropy (2.7x10(5)J m(-3)) is determined to be more than two orders of magnitude higher than that of the bulk NiFe alloy (10(3)J m(-3)) and is close to that determined for Fe nanoparticles of the same size. Still, they display a magnetization of (1.69+/-0.05) mu(B) per metallic atom, identical to that of the bulk NiFe alloy. Combining the results from X-ray absorption and Mössbauer studies, we evidence a progressive enrichment in iron atoms from the core to the surface of the nanoparticles. These results are discussed in relation to both size and chemical effects. They show the main role played by the enriched Fe surface on the magnetic properties and address the feasibility of soft magnetic materials at the nanoscale.

The emission properties of nanocrystalline ZnO particles prepared following an organometallic synthetic method are investigated. Spherical particles and nanorods are studied. The shape of the particles and the ligands used are shown to influence the luminescence properties in the visible domain. Two different emissions are observed at 440 nm (approximately 2.82 eV) and at 580 nm (approximately 2.14 eV) that are associated with the presence of surface defects on the particles. The first emission corresponds to the well-known yellow emission located at 580 nm (approximately 2.14 eV) with a lifetime of 1850 ns for 4.0 nm size ZnO nanoparticles. The second emission at 440 nm (approximately 2.82 eV) is observed when amine functions are present. This strong blue emission is associated with an excitation energy less than that associated with the yellow emission displaying a lifetime of nine nanoseconds. A possible hole trapping effect by the amine groups on the surface of the ZnO particles is discussed as the origin of this emission. The modification of the intensities between the two visible emissions for different particle shapes is proposed to be related to a specific location of the amine ligands on the surface of the particles.

In this paper a quantitative explanation for a diamagnetic ortho/para H2 conversion is given. The description is based on the quantum-mechanical density matrix formalism originally developed by Alexander and Binsch for studies of exchange processes in NMR spectra. Only the nuclear spin system is treated quantum-mechanically. Employing the model of a three spin system, the reactions of the hydrogen gas with the catalysts are treated as a phenomenological rate process, described by a rate constant. Numerical calculations reveal that for nearly all possible geometrical arrangements of the three spin system an efficient spin conversion is obtained. Only in the chemically improbable case of a linear group H-X-H no spin conversion is obtained. The efficiency of the spin conversion depends strongly on the lifetime of the H-X-H complex and on the presence of exchange interactions between the two hydrogens. Even moderate exchange couplings cause a quench of the spin conversion. Thus a sufficiently strong binding of the dihydrogen to the S spin is necessary to render the quenching by the exchange interaction ineffective.

The phenomenon of exchange coupling is taken into account in the description of the magnetic nuclear spin conversion between bound ortho- and para-dihydrogen. This conversion occurs without bond breaking, in contrast to the chemical spin conversion. It is shown that the exchange coupling needs to be reduced so that the corresponding exchange barrier can increase and the given magnetic interaction can effectively induce a spin conversion. The implications for related molecules such as water are discussed. For ice, a dipolar magnetic conversion and for liquid water a chemical conversion are predicted to occur within the millisecond timescale. It follows that a separation of water into its spin isomers, as proposed by Tikhonov and Volkov (Science 2002, 296, 2363), is not feasible. Nuclear spin temperatures of water vapor in comets, which are smaller than the gas-phase equilibrium temperatures, are proposed to be diagnostic for the temperature of the ice or the dust surface from which the water was released.

Treatment of Ru(eta4-C8H12)(eta6-C8H10) with 3 bar H2 in the presence of 2 equiv of tricyclopentylphosphine (PCyp3) in pentane resulted in the isolation of the new bis(dihydrogen) complex RuH2(eta2-H2)2(PCyp3)2 (2), characterized by NMR and single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction. The single-crystal neutron diffraction study is the first carried out for a bis(dihydrogen) complex. The coordination geometry around the metal center is a distorted octahedron defined by the two phosphines in a trans configuration (making an angle of 168.9(1) degrees ), two cis dihydrogen ligands, and two hydrides trans to them, defining the equatorial plane. The H-H bond distances (0.825(8) and 0.835(8) A) are characteristic of two "unstretched" dihydrogen ligands. H/D exchange between the Ru-H and the C-D bonds of deuterated benzene is observed within 1 h, leading to the formation of various isotopomers RuHxD6-x(PCyp3)2 (with x = 0-6). 2 is a catalyst precursor for ethylene coupling (20 bar, 293 K) to a functionalized arene (Murai reaction). We found a 90% conversion of acetophenone to 2-ethylacetophenone within 35 min, whereas 10 h was needed in the same conditions using the analogous tricyclohexylphosphine complex, RuH2(eta2-H2)2(PCy3)2, the best catalyst precursor, at room temperature, prior to this work.

Self-organization of nanoparticles into two- and three-dimensional superlattices on a large scale is required for their implementation into nano- or microelectronic devices. This is achieved, generally after a size-selection process, through spontaneous self-organization on a surface, layer-by-layer deposition or the three-layer technique of oversaturation, but these techniques consider superlattices of limited size. An alternative method developed in our group involves the direct formation in solution of crystalline superlattices, for example of tin nanospheres, iron nanocubes or cobalt nanorods, but these are also of limited size. Here, we report the first direct preparation in solution of multimillimetre-sized three-dimensional compact superlattices of nanoparticles. The 15-nm monodisperse FeCo particles adopt an unusual short-range atomic order that transforms into body-centred-cubic on annealing at 500 degrees C. The latter process produces an air-stable material with magnetic properties suitable for radiofrequency applications.

Nanoparticles (NPs), average size of 2-5 nm, of ruthenium, cobalt, and rhodium have been prepared by an original method, namely the solid-state decomposition under dihydrogen of an organometallic precursor either dispersed in polymer films or directly as nanocrystals. The NPs dispersion, size, and morphology are investigated by transmission electron microscopy, and their structure by wide angle X-ray scattering. Infrared spectroscopy, after adsorption of carbon monoxide on the metal NPs surfaces, evidences a nonoxidized surface of high reactivity.

Some transition metal complexes are known to catalyze ortho/para hydrogen conversion, hydrogen isotope scrambling, and hydrogenation reactions in liquid solution. Using the example of Vaska's complex, we present here evidence by NMR that the solvent is not necessary for these reactions to occur. Thus, solid frozen solutions or polycrystalline powdered samples of homogeneous catalysts may become heterogeneous catalysts. Comparative liquid- and solid-state studies provide novel insight into the reaction mechanisms.

Palladium nanoparticles (4 nm, fcc) were prepared through decomposition of [Pd2(dba)3] by H2 in the presence of a chiral xylofuranoside diphosphite. These particles catalyze the allylic alkylation of rac-3-acetoxy-1,3-diphenyl-1-propene with dimethyl malonate leading to an almost total conversion of the (R) enantiomer and almost no reaction with the (S). This gives rise to 97% ee for the alkylation product and a kinetic resolution of the substrate recovered with ca. 90% ee. This behavior was compared to that of a molecular catalyst at various dilutions, and the differences between the two systems are discussed. This is the first colloidal system shown to display such a high enantioselectivity besides the well-known Pt/cinchonidine system.

The reaction of the metal-organic precursor Fe[N(SiMe3)2]2 with H2 in the presence of a long-chain acid and a long-chain amine in various proportions produces monodisperse zerovalent iron nanoparticles. These Fe particles display magnetic properties that match those of bulk iron as evidenced by magnetic and Mössbauer measurements. The nanoparticles adopt a cubic shape with edges of 7 nanometers and are incorporated into extended crystalline superlattices containing nanocubes in close proximity and with their crystallographic axes aligned. These superlattices are formed in solution, precipitate in high yield, and may be redissolved and redeposited as two-dimensional arrays.

Co and NiFe nanoparticles (2.7 to 3.3 nm mean diameter) of narrow size distribution have been obtained through the decomposition of organometallic precursors in organic solutions of long alkyl chain ligands, namely oleic acid and hexadecylamine. Materials of various volume fractions were produced. The particles have been structurally characterised by WAXS. Both adopt the bulk structure: HCP in the case of cobalt; a mixture of FCC and BCC for NiFe. Their aptitude to self-assemble either on flat supports or in bulk solid state has been investigated by means of TEM and SAXS. This study suggests the crystallisation of the nanoparticles upon solvent evaporation, especially a local FCC arrangement was observed for the NiFe material. Magnetic measurements (SQUID) confirm this tendency. The blocking temperature depends on the metal volume fraction, i.e. on the anisotropy generated by the dipolar couplings (Ki). We show that, for dense samples, the particles of high intrinsic anisotropy, Ku, (Co) still display an individual behaviour while the soft ones (NiFe) display a collective behaviour.

The wide bite angle diphosphines homoxantphos (10,11-dihydro-4,5,-bis(diphenylphosphino)dibenzo[b,f]oxepine), sixantphos (4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)-10,10-dimethylphenoxasilin), and thixantphos (2,8-dimethyl-4,6-bis(diphenylphosphino)phenoxathiin) were used to prepare cis[MH(2)(diphosphine)(2)] complexes (1a-f) by reaction of [Ru(cod)(cot)] (cod = cyclo-octa-1,5-diene, cot = cyclo-octa-1,3,5-triene) with 2 equiv of the diphosphine under dihydrogen pressure. The electronic properties of the thixantphos ligand were varied. Complexes 1a-f can be protonated with HBF(4) or CF(3)COOH to yield hydrido(dihydrogen) complexes cis[MH(H(2))(diphosphine)(2)](+) (2a-f), which were characterized by VT (variable temperature) NMR and T(1) measurements. These complexes show fast hydrogen atom exchange between the eta(2)-H(2) and the terminal hydride at all temperatures studied. They are thermally unstable toward dihydrogen loss yielding the cationic monohydride complexes cis[MH(diphosphine)(2)](+) (3a-f). Coordination of the eta(2)-H(2) is dominated by sigma --> d donation, and hence, the H-H distance is hardly influenced by the electronic properties of the ligands.

Silylation of ethylene by chlorosilanes is catalysed by ruthenium complexes. Mechanistic investigations reveal the presence of a complicated network of reactions leading to new sigma-silane, ethylene and silyl complexes.

The influence of size reduction on the magnetism of CoRh has been studied on a system of isolated nanometric spherical bimetallic ultrafine particles embedded in a polymer matrix. Pulsed fields up to 30 T were used in order to approach the magnetic saturation ( M(S)). Particles with a mean diameter of 1.65 (+/-0.1) nm display a value of 2.38 micro(B) per CoRh unit strongly enhanced compared to values calculated or measured on a bulk alloy. These results were interpreted as the first evidence of the cooperative role of both alloying and size reduction to the enhancement of M(S) in this system associating a 3d FM metal with a 4d metal.

Room temperature reaction of the bis(dihydrogen) complex RuH(2)(H(2))(2)(PCy(3))(2) (1) with excess pinacol borane (HBpin) generates the novel complex RuH[(mu-H)(2)Bpin](sigma-HBpin)(PCy(3))(2) (2) by loss of dihydrogen. Complex 2 was characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystallography. It contains two pinacolborane moieties coordinated in a different fashion, one as a dihydroborate (B-H distances : 1.58(3) and 1.47(3) A) and the other as a sigma-borane (B-H distance: 1.35(3) A). In addition, reaction of 1 with one equiv of HBpin yields total conversion to a new complex tentatively formulated as RuH[(mu-H)(2)Bpin](H(2))(PCy(3))(2) (3) on the basis of NMR data. In the presence of excess HBpin, 3 is converted to 2. Furthermore, under an atmosphere of dihydrogen, a C(7)D(8) solution of 2 rapidly converts to 3 and finally regenerates 1 over a much longer period. Thus, complex 3 is an intermediate in the formation of 2 from 1. In these processes the borane is eliminated as HBpin later hydrolyzed to BpinOBpin. Selective hydroboration of ethylene (3 bar) into C(2)H(5)Bpin is achieved using 1 or 2 as catalyst precursors in toluene, whereas in THF, competitive formation of the vinylborane C(2)H(3)Bpin (56% under 20 bar of C(2)H(4)) can be favored.

The decomposition, either thermal or under H2, of [O(AuIPR3)3](CF3SO3) (R = Ph 1, R = Me 2) in organic solvents has been studied by 31P(1H) NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy and TEM; during the reaction, the phosphine acts as an efficient oxygen trap and gold nanoparticles are produced which may be stabilized by PVP in acetonitrile (mean diameter 4.5 nm) or oleylamine in toluene (mean diameter 9 nm).

The decomposition of the ruthenium precursor Ru(COD)(COT) (1, COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene; COT = 1,3,5-cyclooctatriene) in mild conditions (room temperature, 1--3 bar H(2)) in THF leads, in the presence of a stabilizer (polymer or ligand), to nanoparticles of various sizes and shapes. In THF and in the presence of a polymer matrix (Ru/polymer = 5%), crystalline hcp particles of uniform mean size (1.1 nm) homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix and agglomerated hcp particles (1.7 nm) were respectively obtained in poly(vinylpyrrolidone) and cellulose acetate. The same reaction, carried out using various concentrations relative to ruthenium of alkylamines or alkylthiols as stabilizers (L = C(8)H(17)NH(2), C(12)H(25)NH(2), C(16)H(33)NH(2), C(8)H(17)SH, C(12)H(25)SH, or C(16)H(33)SH), leads to agglomerated particles (L = thiol) or particles dispersed in the solution (L = amine), both displaying a mean size near 2--3 nm and an hcp structure. In the case of amine ligands, the particles are generally elongated and display a tendency to form worm- or rodlike structures at high amine concentration. This phenomenon is attributed to a rapid amine ligand exchange at the surface of the particle as observed by (13)C NMR. In contrast, the particles stabilized by C(8)H(17)SH are not fluxional, but a catalytic transformation of thiols into disulfides has been observed which involves oxidative addition of thiols on the ruthenium surface. All colloids were characterized by microanalysis, infrared spectroscopy after CO adsorption, high-resolution electron microscopy, and wide-angle X-ray scattering.

The bis(dihydrogen) complex RuH(2)(H(2))(2)(PCy(3))(2) (1) reacts with 2-phenyl-3,4-dimethylphosphaferrocene (L(1)) to give RuH(2)(H(2))(PCy(3))(2)(L(1)) (2). This dihydride-dihydrogen complex has been characterized by X-ray crystallography and variable-temperature (1)H and (31)P NMR spectroscopy. The exchange between the dihydrogen ligand and the two hydrides is characterized by a DeltaG() of 46.2 kJ/mol at 263 K. H/D exchange is readily observed when heating a C(7)D(8) solution of 2 (J(H-D) = 30 Hz). The H(2) ligand in 2 can be displaced by ethylene or carbon monoxide leading to the corresponding ethylene or carbonyl complexes. The reaction of 1 with 2 equiv of 3,4-dimethylphosphaferrocene (L(2)) yields the dihydride complex RuH(2)(PCy(3))(2)(L(2))(2) (5).

Spontaneous decomposition of [In(η 5 -C 5 H 5 )] in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) or trioctylphosphane oxide (TOPO) as a stabilizer gave monodisperse indium nanoparticles with a mean diameter of about 5-6 nm. Simply decomposing InCp at room temperature in the presence of hexadecylamine leads to the formation of indium nanowires with a crystalline bct structure, a mean diameter of about 200 nm, and lengths in the micrometer range. The method can be extended to the preparation of In3 Sn nanowires of about 100 nm in diameter (a transmission electron micrograph is shown in the picture). Nanocomposite core-shell particles that consist of a Sn0 core surrounded by a thin layer of tin oxides have been prepared by thermolysis of [(Sn(NMe2)2)2] in anisole that contains small, controlled amounts of water. The particles were characterized by means of electronic microscopies (TEM, HRTEM, SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies, photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The TEM micrographs show spherical nanoparticles, the size and size distribution of which depends on the initial experimental conditions of temperature, time, water concentration, and tin precursor concentration. Nanoparticles of 19 nm median size and displaying a narrow size distribution have been obtained with excellent yield in the optimized conditions. HRTEM, XPS, XRD and Mossbauer studies indicate the composite nature of the particles that consist of a well-crystallized tin beta core of approximately equals 11 nm covered with a layer of approximately equals 4 nm of amorphous tin dioxide and which also contain quadratic tin monoxide crystallites. The thermal oxidation of this nanocomposite yields well-crystallized nanoparticles of SnO2* without coalescence or size change. XRD patterns show that the powder consists of a mixture of two phases: the tetragonal cassiterite phase, which is the most abundant, and an orthorhombic phase. In agreement with the small SnO2 particle size, the relative intensity of the adsorbed dioxygen peak observed on the XPS spectrum is remarkable, when compared with that observed in the case of larger SnO2 particles. This is consistent with electrical conductivity measurements, which demonstrate that this material is highly sensitive to the presence of a reducing gas such as carbon monoxide.

Soluble ruthenium nanoparticles of uniform size (see picture) with a porous spongelike structure were obtained by the reaction of [Ru(C(8)H(10))(C(8)H(12))] with H(2) in methanol or THF/methanol. The particle size can be controlled in the range 15-100 nm by varying the MeOH/THF ratio. The particles catalyze benzene hydrogenation without modification of their size or structure. Their formation is proposed to occur in the droplets of a nanosized emulsion, which act as nanoreactors.

The synthesis and characterization of molybdenum colloidal particles were evaluated using thermal and sonochemical methods and starting from different metal precursors, Mo(CO)6 and (NH4)2MoS4. The products were characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopic (UV, FTIR), and surface analysis (XPS) techniques, as well as by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for determining the particle sizes. Using Mo(CO)6 as metal source, particle sizes with an average diameter of 1.5 nm can be obtained using tert-amyl alcohol as solvent and tetrahydrothiophene as sulfurating ligand. The characterization of these particles showed that they are composed of molybdenum oxide MoO3. Using (NH4)2MoS4 as metal precursor, particles with average diameters of 4.7 and 2.5 nm were synthesized using thermal and sonochemical methods, respectively. The characterization of these particles showed them to be composed of molybdenum sulfide, MoS2. The sonochemical method proved to be the fastest and most convenient synthetic pathway of obtaining small colloidal particles at low temperatures and with control of the average size. To study the fluxionality of the bis(dihydrogen) complex RuH(2)(H(2))(2)(PCy(3))(2) (1), NMR spectra were recorded in Freons (mixture of CDCl(3), CDFCl(2), and CDF(2)Cl). 1 was found to remain fluxional at all temperatures, but the presence of CDCl(3) necessary for its solubilization induces its transformation into, first, RuHCl(H(2))(2)(PCy(3))(2) (3) and the new ruthenium(IV) dihydride RuH(2)Cl(2)(PCy(3))(2) (4). 4 is produced selectively in pure CDCl(3) but reacts further to give a mixture of chloro complexes. 4 was isolated from the reaction of 1 with aqueous HCl in Et(2)O and shows a fluxional process attributed to the interconversion between two symmetrical isomers. The activation parameters of this process were obtained by (1)H NMR line shape analysis, as well as those corresponding to the exchange between 3 and free dihydrogen. The fluxionality of the dihydrogen-hydride system is also evident at a much faster time scale than that of NMR studies in the inelastic neutron scattering observations of the rotation of the dihydrogen ligands. The geometries and relative energies of several isomers of complexes 1, 3, and 4 were studied using density functional theory (DFT) and MP2 methods, together with a few coupled-cluster (CCSD(T)) calculations. In contrast to what might have been expected, the two hydrides and the two H(2) units of 1 lie in the same plane, due to the attractive "cis effect" created by the hydrides. The two H(2) ligands adopt cis positions in the lowest-energy isomer. Rotation of the two dihydrogen ligands has been analyzed using DFT calculations. A slight preference for a C(2) conrotatory pathway has been found with a calculated barrier in good agreement with the experimental INS value. Two low-energy isomers of 4 have been characterized computationally, both of which have C(2)(v)() symmetry, consistent with the solution NMR spectra.

The synthesis of phosphino-terminated dendrimers is described up to the tenth generation, which possess more than 3000 phosphino groups (3-[G'(10)()]). Several complexation reactions of these dendrimers toward various low oxidation states transition metal derivatives have been carried out, up to generation 5 for iron (4-[G'(5)()]: 96 Ph(2)P-->Fe(CO)(4) groups), generation 4 for tungsten (5-[G'(4)()]: 48 Ph(2)P-->W(CO)(5) groups), generation 10 for gold (6-[G'(10)()]: 3072 Ph(2)P-->Au-Cl groups), and generation 6 for rhodium (8-[G'(6)()]: 192 Ph(2)P-->Rh(acac)(CO) groups). These reactions demonstrate that the phosphino-terminated dendrimers behave analogously to monophosphines, in spite of the nanometer size of the high generations.
