A successful key Airborne Laser (ABL) flight-test by the Boeing team and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency demonstrates the weapon system's ability to track an airborne target and fire from its laser.

The F/A-18E/F Super Hornet team is negotiating with the US Navy about funding a number of targeting improvements that would take fuller advantage of the aircraft's new APG-79 radar and reduce engagement times. The targeting enhancements would permit the generations of precise, mensurated targeting coordinates in real time within the cockpit.

Israel is upgrading its long-range, Green Pine radar, which is used to find targets for the country's Arrow air defense missile, to make it a candidate for further modifications as a directed energy weapon. The Arrow and Green Pine systems were demonstrated in a live-fire test at Palmachim Air Force Base south of Tel Aviv on December 2, 2005, and Link 16 communications are expected to tie the system into the US Aegis missile defense ships and Patriot batteries.

A study by the research firm Frost & Sullivan states that the US market for network-centric warfare technology and platforms will reach $28.6 billion by 2011. The market, which comprised of strategic and base communications, airborne sensors, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), airborne platforms and tactical communications, is valued at $25.5 billion for 2006.

The US Air Force has started studying the possibility of buying a new radar to help sustain the venerable B-52H Stratofortress bomber for years to come. Chief Master Sgt. Timothy Finch, who leads a team at a Langley Air Force Base Va. that works on various B-52 modernization and sustainment programs, believes that the Air Force would approve a funding request to conduct a formal study which probably take a year or two to complete confirming whether a new radar is needed.

The plan is to determine the technical risks for design and development of a new Low Probability of Interception (LPI)/Low Probability of Detection (LPD) Terrain Following/Terrain Avoidance (TF/TA) radar in time to incorporate government findings into the final System Requirements Document and industry proposals for the SDD phase
