Conservation agriculture involves minimum soil disturbance, continuous ground cover, and diversified crop rotations or mixtures. Conservation agriculture production systems (CAPS) have the potential to improve soil quality if appropriate cropping systems are developed. In this study, five CAPS including different cropping patterns and cover crops under two fertility levels, and a plow-based system as control, were studied in a typical upland agricultural area in northern Mindanao in the Philippines. Results showed that soil organic carbon (SOC) at 0- 5-cm depth for all CAPS treatments generally increased with time while SOC under the plow-based system tended to decline over time for both the high (120, 60 and 60 kg N P K ha-1) and moderate (60-30-30 kg N P K ha-1) fertility levels. The cropping system with maize + Stylosanthes guianensis in the first year followed by Stylosanthes guianensis and fallow in the second year, and the cassava + Stylosanthes guianensis exhibited the highest rate of SOC increase for high and moderate fertility levels, respectively. After one, two, and three cropping seasons, plots under CAPS had significantly higher soil residual water content (RWC) than under plow-based systems. Results of this study suggest that conservation agriculture has a positive impact on soil quality, while till systems negatively impact soil characteristics.

Objectives: This study compares the prevalence of emotional, academic, and cognitive impairment in children and mothers living in the community with those living in shelters for the homeless.Method: In New York City, 82 homeless mothers and their 102 children, aged 6 to 11, recruited from family shelters were compared to 115 nonhomeless mothers with 176 children recruited from classmates of the homeless children. Assessments included standardized tests and interviews.Results: Mothers in shelters for the homeless showed higher rates of depression and anxiety than did nonhomeless mothers. Boys in homeless shelters showed higher rates of serious emotional and behavioral problems. Both boys and girls in homeless shelters showed more academic problems than did nonhomeless children.Conclusion: Study findings suggest a need among homeless children for special attention to academic problems that are not attributable to intellectual deficits in either children or their mothers. Although high rates of emotional and behavioral problems characterized poor children living in both settings, boys in shelters for the homeless may be particularly in need of professional attention. Resume: Organized pneumonia, previously called bronchiolitis obliterans with organized pneumonia, is an interstitial lung disea- se that belongs to the group of idiopathic interstitial diseases and was first recognized in 1985. Sometimes it is not rela- ted to a specific cause calleing it in that case cryptogenetic, organized pneumonia but is frequently associated with other etiologies that may be infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic or secondary to drugs, it might also be related to extrapul- monary pathology as is the case of our patient in which is associated with a chronic cholestatic liver disease such as primary biliary cirrhosis.

The Sierra Madre Sparrow (Xenospiza baileyi) is an endangered species microendemic to subalpine grasslands of central and northwestern Mexico. Given that land use change is highly dynamic in central Mexico, there is a need for a continuous monitoring of the distribution and conservation status of the species across the region. We here update the distribution of the Sierra Madre Sparrow by surveying the historical sites where the species is known to occur, verifying records from a citizen science database, and identifying potential habitat in the region to find new localities for the species. We also highlight main local threats and discuss potential conservation activities for the sites where we recorded the species. We found that all historical sites are still inhabited by the species and we identified new localities for the Sierra Madre Sparrow. Each locality presents particular threats for the conservation of the species. Common threats to all sites include agriculture and land owners' unawareness about the presence of the species. Particular attention should be focused on providing management guidelines for agricultural practices in the area. Special efforts must be directed to engaging communities into conserving and monitoring subalpine grasslands. Much work should be done to define and apply conservation strategies in cooperation with local governments, institutions, and communities. The identification of new localities for the species reveals the need to expand research beyond traditional study and bird-watching sites.

A biomineral is a crystalline or amorphous mineral product of the biochemical activity of an organism and the local accumulation of elements available in the environment. The cactus family has been characterized by accumulating calcium oxalates, although other biominerals have been detected. Five species of Cacteae were studied to find biominerals. For this, anatomical sections and Fourier transform infrared, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry analyses were used. In the studied regions of the five species, they presented prismatic or spherulite dihydrate calcium oxalate crystals, as the predominant biomineral. Anatomical sections of Astrophytum asterias showed prismatic crystals and Echinocactus texensis amorphous silica bodies in the hypodermis. New findings were for Ariocarpus retusus subsp. trigonus peaks assigned to calcium carbonate and for Mammillaria sphaerica peaks belonging to silicates.

The treatment of leishmaniasis includes pentavalent antimony drugs but, because of the side effects, toxicity and cases of treatment failure or resistance, the search of new antileishmanial compounds are necessary. The aims of this study were to evaluate and compare the in vitro antileishmanial activity of four green tea catechins, and to assess the efficacy of topical (−)-epigallocatechin gallate in a cutaneous leishmaniasis model. The antileishmanial activity of green tea catechins was evaluated against intracellular amastigotes, and cytotoxicity was performed with human monocytic cell line. BALB/c mice were infected in the ear dermis with Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis and treated with topical 15% (−)-epigallocatechin gallate, intraperitoneal Glucantime, and control group. The efficacy of treatments was evaluated by quantifying the parasite burden and by measuring the lesions size. (−)-Epigallocatechin gallate and (−)-epigallocatechin were the most active compounds with IC50 values 1. Topical treatment with (−)-epigallocatechin gallate decreased significantly both lesion size and parasite burden (80.4% inhibition) compared to control group (p < 0.05), and moreover (−)-epigallocatechin gallate showed a similar efficacy to Glucantime (85.1% inhibition), the reference drug for leishmaniasis treatment.

Landslides in reservoir contexts are a well-recognised hazard that may lead to dangerous situations regarding infrastructures and people’s safety. Satellite-based radar interferometry is proving to be a reliable method to monitor the activity of landslides in such contexts. Here, we present a DInSAR (Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) analysis of Sentinel-1 images that exemplifies the usefulness of the technique to recognize and monitor landslides in the Rules Reservoir (Southern Spain). The integration of DInSAR results with a comprehensive geomorphological study allowed us to understand the typology, evolution and triggering factors of three active landslides: Lorenzo-1, Rules Viaduct and El Arrecife. We could distinguish between rotational and translational landslides and, thus, we evaluated the potential hazards related to these typologies, i.e., retrogression (Lorenzo-1 and Rules Viaduct landslides) or catastrophic slope failure (El Arrecife Landslide), respectively. We also observed how changes in the water level of the reservoir influence the landslide’s behaviour. Additionally, we were able to monitor the stability of the Rules Dam as well as detect the deformation of a highway viaduct that crosses a branch of the reservoir. Overall, we consider that other techniques must be applied to continue monitoring the movements, especially in the El Arrecife Landslide, in order to avoid future structural damages and fatalities.

Introducción: hay casos de uso inadecuado del término síndrome en la discusión diagnóstica, en el Hospital Universitario V.I. Lenin de Holguín, lo que puede deberse a diversos factores. Objetivo: identificar, según el criterio de expertos, si existen en otras provincias de Cuba casos de uso inadecuado del término síndrome en la discusión diagnóstica, su repercusión negativa en el diagnóstico médico, principales manifestaciones del uso inadecuado, probables causas, necesidad de consenso y de reemplazo conceptual. Métodos: estudio observacional descriptivo con triangulación metodológica. Muestra intencionada de 15 expertos de diferentes provincias, profesores auxiliar o titular, máster, doctor en ciencias o ambos y especialistas de primer o segundo grado en medicina interna, quienes contestaron, por vía electrónica, una encuesta con diversos ítems y preguntas, tipo Escala Likert. La encuesta fue validada estadísticamente, los datos fueron procesados con uso de la mediana y de cuartiles mediante: test de Anova, coeficiente de correlación de Kendall y análisis clúster. Resultados: la mayoría de expertos concordaron en que existen casos de uso inadecuado del término síndrome en las discusiones diagnósticas, su negativa repercusión en el diagnóstico médico, posibles causas, necesidad de consenso con algunas divergencias, entre tres grupos de expertos, respecto a formas de manifestarse, otros factores influyentes y en especial sobre la ampliación del concepto síndrome, mediante la inclusión de signos propios de los exámenes complementarios, y su posible consecuencia en el algoritmo del método clínico. Conclusiones: aunque la mayoría de expertos concordaron sobre la existencia de uso inadecuado del término síndrome y otros aspectos relacionados, la existencia de divergencias, en especial sobre el reemplazo conceptual del término y su repercusión en el proceso diagnóstico hace plantear la existencia de una escuela heterodoxa (minoría), una escuela ortodoxa o tradicional (mayoría) y una escuela ecléctica, intermedia en número de expertos. Objetivo. Determinar las características del manejo médico con metotrexate en el embarazo ectópico no complicado en el Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal de Lima. Materiales y métodos. Estudio tipo Investigación observacional analítica. Diseño: Observacional, descriptivo, retrospectivo, de casos. La muestra estuvo comprendida por 30 historias clínicas, de pacientes con diagnóstico de embarazo ectópico que recibieron metotrexate en el periodo enero 2009 - diciembre 2010. Los instrumentos empleados estuvieron conformados por una ficha de recolección de datos elaborada para los fines de estudio. Resultados. La localización más frecuente fue la tubárica derecha en el 56,7% de los casos, el esquema más usado fue el de la dosis única en el 86,6% de los casos, el tamaño más frecuente fue el de 20 a 35 mm en el 60% de los casos, el 70% de los casos negativizaron la B-hCG (fracción B de la gonadotropina coriónica humana), el 30% requirió cirugía, la reacción adversa más frecuente al metotrexate fue las nauseas (10 % de los casos).Conclusiones. El tratamiento médico con metotrexate es una alternativa para pacientes con embarazo ectópico no complicado, presentando una alta frecuencia de negativización de B-hCG (70 %). No hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas en cuanto a los valores de la B-hCG al momento de la decisión quirúrgica. El tipo de esquema más usado fue el de una dosis y la vía de administración fue la vía intramuscular en todas las pacientes.

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation is considered as a cornerstone of non-pharmacological treatments in cardiac patients and several previous studies have been performed with this population to know the effects of this treatment. The main goal of these researches has been to analyse the influence of different training modalities, such as endurance training, resistance training or combined endurance and resistance training. Within endurance training, the principal topic is the efficacy of moderate continuous training and high-intensity interval training. However, the findings of these previous studies are controversial and a very high heterogeneity has been reported in previous meta-analyses. Despite the fact that the influence of the training variables, such as frequency, intensity, time and type (FITT variables) has been widely reported, none of the previous studies have considered these variables globally in order to explain the controversial results. Therefore, the aim of this review was to interpret previous studies to explain this heterogeneity and set out proposals to manage exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation properly. The review helped to show the lack of control of FITT variables and their influence in the effect of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation, highlighting the need to control these variables properly to reach higher adaptations in cardiac rehabilitation.

Introducción: la colesta sis intrahepática del embarazo es una afección de espec tro clínico-analítico variable de alto riesgo para el feto. Objetivo: identificar la expresividad clínica, bioquímica y los result ados perinatales en pacientes con colestasis intrahepática del embarazo. Método: estudio observacional descriptivo prospectivo, de marzo de 2012 a febrero de 2014 en el Hospital Vladimir Ilich Lenin, de Holguín, Cuba. De 68 pacientes ingresadas con sospec ha de afección hepatobiliar, 43 con colestasis del embarazo clasificaron bajo criterios de selección muestral. Los datos procedieron del interrogatorio, examen físico e historias clínicas. Se emplearon los estadígrafos U de Mann-Whitney y T est de Fisher. La clínica se especificó como de mayor o menor severidad y el desenlace perinatal, favorable o desfavorable. Resultados: 58,1% fueron recién nacidos pretérmino; 25,6% con bajo peso al nacer y 23,3% con bajo Apgar. La alaninoaminotransferasa y aspartatoamin otransferasa fueron los analitos con mayor aumento promedio, con 3,2 y 2,2 veces por encima del límite superior normal, respectivamente. Las cifras de alaninoaminotransferasa, aspartatoaminotransferasa, la bilirrubina y el tiempo de protrombina fueron significativamente mayores en el grupo con mayor severidad del cuadro clínico para un 37,2% de la muestra de bilirrubina y triglicéridos, en el grupo con desenlace perinatal desfavorable en un 74,4%. Se produjo una asociación significativa (p = 0,003) entre la severidad de cuadro clínico y el desenlace perinatal. Conclusiones: los resultados de este estudio abren las puertas a futuras investigaciones de diseño más riguroso, con vistas a identificar predictores clínicos y bioquímicos , de peor pronóstico fetal en nuestro medio. Frente a la crisis de los años 90 de nuestro país, que puso en jaque a las fuentes de empleo y alejó a algunos trabajadores de la economía formal, se plantearon alternativas que quebraron la tradicional relación capital-trabajo, llevando a cabo procesos autogestivos bajo diferentes modalidades, entre las cuales interesa aquí la de empresa recuperada. La presente investigación pretende describir el traspaso de empresa capitalista a cooperativa de trabajo de la Unión Saladeña de la Provincia de Corrientes (ex-Pindapoy). En cuanto a la metodología, se trabajó a partir de un diseño descriptivo-cualitativo, realizando una revisión bibliográfica y documental sobre empresas recuperadas en la región, como también entrevistas semiestructuradas a informantes clave pertenecientes a dicha organización. De esta manera, describir el proceso supone una instancia reflexiva hacia las alternativas al orden hegemónico capitalista y permite aportar al debate actual de las mismas.

Pyrogenic carbon (PyC, charcoal) is produced during vegetation fires at a rate of ~116–385 Tg C yr−1 globally. It represents one of the most degradation-resistant organic carbon pools, but its long-term fate and the processes leading to its degradation remain subject of debate. A frequently highlighted potential loss mechanism of PyC is its consumption in subsequent fires. However, only three studies to date have tested this hypothesis with reported losses of 300°C. Mass losses also showed a significant negative correlation (r = −0.38, p = 0.05) with thermal recalcitrance (T50) determined using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Tmax with charcoal reflectance (Ro) determined after the fires (r = 0.46, p = 0.05). Losses in the high-intensity fire were significantly higher (p = 0.05) than in the low-intensity fire, but the latter had a higher rate of conversion of fuel to PyC. Our results demonstrate that exposure to fire can indeed be a significant removal mechanism for PyC that remains exposed on the ground after a previous fire. The losses found, however, are likely to represent an extreme upper range as most PyC produced in a fire would not remain exposed on the ground surface by the time the next fire occurs. Our data also demonstrate, for real wildfire conditions, the (i) contrasting resistance of different PyC types to combustion and (ii) contrasting net PyC losses between different fire intensities. The DSC and reflectance (Ro) results support the usefulness of these analyses in reflecting thermal degradation resistance and temperature exposure under actual wildfire conditions.

Background The Mini-IPIP scales (Donellan et al., 2006) are possibly one of the most commonly used short inventories for measuring the Big Five Factors of personality. In this study, we aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of two Mini-IPIP Spanish short forms, one balanced and one positively wording (PW). Method Two samples, one from native Spanish speakers and another from native English speakers, made up a total of 940 participants in this study. The short forms were translated and adapted based on international guidelines. Reliability (internal and composite) and validity analyses (construct ESEM, concurrent, predictive and cross-cultural invariance through multi-group factorial models) were performed. Results For both the balanced scale and the PW one, modeling a method factor was not relevant. The reliability and validity indices of both forms were according to theory and prior studies’ findings: (a) personality factors were medium-high related to affective factors; (b) personality factors were less related to life satisfaction than affective factors; (c) life satisfaction was medium-high related to affective factors; (d) neuroticism appeared mainly related to all criteria variables; and (e) an acceptable level of invariance was achieved with regard to the English version. Discussion This study contributes to research on personality assessment by providing the first evidence regarding the psychometric properties of a PW short measure. These results suggest that PW short scales of personality used after data screening techniques may be appropriate for future studies (e.g., cross-cultural, content validity).

The aim was to determine whether there are differences between groups in jumping to conclusions and the number of beads required to make a decision based on task difficulty. An assessment was made of 19 patients with non-affective psychosis, 19 with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), and 19 healthy controls. The Beads Task scale was used in its two versions. Patients with non-affective psychosis jumped to conclusions. There was significant interaction between group and task difficulty. Increased difficulty of the task did not affect the number of beads patients with non-affective psychosis or OCD needed to make their decision. However, healthy controls needed to see more beads before they could make a decision in the hard test than in the easy one. Patients with non-affective psychosis jump to conclusions, but neither this group nor the OCD patients benefit from the changes in task difficulty when making their decisions.

Background Litter decomposition is a key process in the functioning of forest ecosystems, because it strongly controls nutrient recycling and soil fertility maintenance. The interaction between the litter chemical composition and the metabolism of the soil microbial community has been described as the main factor of the decomposition process based on three hypotheses: substrate-matrix interaction (SMI), functional breadth (FB) and home-field advantage (HFA). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of leaf litter quality (as a direct plant effect, SMI hypothesis), the metabolic capacity of the microbial community (as a legacy effect, FB hypothesis), and the coupling between the litter quality and microbial activity (HFA hypothesis) on the litter decomposition of two contiguous deciduous oak species at a local scale. Methods To accomplish this objective, we performed a litterbag experiment in the field for 270 days to evaluate mass loss, leaf litter quality and microbial activity in a complete factorial design for litter quality and species site. Results The litter of Quercus deserticola had higher rate of decomposition independently of the site, while the site of Quercus castanea promoted a higher rate of decomposition independently of the litter quality, explained by the specialization of the soil microbial community in the use of recalcitrant organic compounds. The Home-Field Advantage Index was reduced with the decomposition date (22% and 4% for 30 and 270 days, respectively). Discussion We observed that the importance of the coupling of litter quality and microbial activity depends on decomposition stage. At the early decomposition stage, the home-advantage hypothesis explained the mass loss of litter; however, in the advanced decomposition stage, the litter quality and the metabolic capacity of the microbial community can be the key drivers.

Introduction The tobacco control community has raised some concerns about whether studies on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) published in scientific journals hide conflicts of interest (COI) and whether such reports are biased. This study assessed potential COI in the e-cigarette scientific literature. Methods Cross-sectional study was conducted on e-cigarette publications indexed in PubMed up to August 2014. We extracted information about the authors (affiliations, location, etc.), publication characteristics (type, topic, subject, etc.), results and conclusions, presence of a COI statement, and funding by and/or financial ties to pharmaceutical, tobacco, and/or e-cigarette companies. An algorithm to determine the COI disclosure status was created based on the information in the publication. Prevalence ratios (PRs) and confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to identify associations with COI disclosure, controlling for several independent variables. Results Of the 404 publications included in the analysis, 37.1% (n=150) had no COI disclosure statement, 38.6% declared no COI, 13.4% declared potential COI with pharmaceutical companies, 3.0% with tobacco companies, and 10.6% with e-cigarette companies. The conclusions in publications with COI, which were mainly tied to pharmaceutical companies, were more likely to be favourable to e-cigarette use (PR=2.23; 95% CI: 1.43–3.46). Publications that supported the use of e-cigarettes for both harm reduction (PR=1.81; 95%CI: 1.14– 2.89) and smoking cessation (PR=2.02; 95% CI: 1.26–3.23) were more likely to have conclusions that were favourable to e-cigarettes. Conclusions One-third of the publications reporting studies on e-cigarettes did not have a COI disclosure statement, and this proportion was even higher in news articles, editorials and other types of publications. Papers with conclusions that were favourable to e-cigarette use were more likely to have COI. Journal editors and reviewers should consider evaluating publications, including funding sources, to determine whether the results and conclusions may be biased.

Alexithymia can be defined as inability to identify and describe emotions in the self. Has shown to be related to several psychological and pathological processes that can result in unsatisfactory interpersonal relationships and decreased social adjustment. Advances in research of alexithymia require the development and validation of assessment instruments, and its application to different population. With this aim, we studied the psychometric properties of the Twenty-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) in Chilean population using various modeling procedures (e.g., CFA, ESEM) in different structures (i.e., Correlated, Unidimensional, Hierarchical or Wording factors). Among the 10 models tested, the four-dimensional structure offered the best fit but with item-loading problems in the last factor (Pragmatic Thinking). We suggest that the studied version of the scale needs improvement (theoretical and empirical) to ensure optimal indices of validation for Chilean population.

Orf virus (ORFV) is the etiological agent of Contagious Ecthyma (CE) disease that mainly affects sheep, goats, wild ruminants, and humans with a worldwide distribution. To date, only two strains from Argentinian sheep have been characterized at the molecular level and there is little information on ORFV strains circulating in Argentina. Here we describe and analyze five outbreaks of CE in goats in three geographic regions of the country: Northwest, Center, and Southwest. The phylogenetic analysis based on four molecular markers of ORFV (orf011 partial sequence and orf020, orf109, and orf127 complete sequence genes) revealed that there are different strains circulating in Argentina and pointed out the importance of knowing the health status of animals traded between farms.

The valid assessment of the impact of transplantation on psychological well-being is highly relevant to optimize treatment. However, to date there is no standardized instrument available in Spain. The Transplant Effects Questionnaire (TxEQ) evaluates the specific problems associated with organ transplantation, such as worry about transplant, guilt regarding the donor, disclosure of having undergone transplantation, adherence to medical treatment and responsibility toward the donor, family, friends, or medical staff. Against this backdrop the English original version of the TxEQ was translated into Spanish and validated in a sample of 240 liver transplant recipients. Participants also filled in the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI), and the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-12v.2). Confirmatory factor analysis of the TxEQ-Spanish revealed a five-factor structure equivalent to the English original version, and satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: worry α = 0.82, guilt α = 0.77, disclosure α = 0.91, adherence α = 0.82, responsibility α = 0.83). Results showed that better mental quality of life was associated with higher adherence and disclosure, as well as less worry and guilt. Higher posttraumatic growth was significantly associated with worry, guilt, and responsibility. Interestingly, the most powerful predictor of posttraumatic growth was worry. Analysis of variance showed an interaction effect of PTG and mental quality of life on adherence, with medium PTG being associated with significantly stronger adherence in participants with better mental quality of life. In conclusion our study could successfully adapt and validate the Spanish version of the TxEQ in a large sample of liver transplant recipients. Our findings show a complex relationship between emotional reactions to transplantation, mental quality of life, and posttraumatic growth, which give further insight into inner processes supporting psychological well-being and adherence after liver transplantation.

El presente trabajo propone un recorrido por las diferentes interpretaciones sobre la información geográfica que se han vertido acerca de la obra de Tito Livio. El estado de la cuestión señala, en un primer momento, los aportes que se realizaron hasta principios de la década del ’80 a partir de una lectura de las fuentes distorsionada por un concepto anacrónico de la geografía. In cases of natural disasters, epidemics or even in dangerous situations like an act of terrorism, battle fields, a shooting or a mountain accident, finding survivors is a challenge. In these kind of situations it is sometimes critical to know if a person has vital signs or not, without the need to be in contact with the victim, thus avoiding jeopardizing the lives of the rescue workers. In this work, we propose the use of video magnification techniques to detect small movements in human bodies due to breathing that are invisible to the naked eye. Two different video magnification techniques, intensity-based and phase-based, were tested. The utility of these techniques to detect people who are alive but injured in risk situations was verified by simulating a scene with three people involved in an accident. Several factors such as camera stability, distance to the object, light conditions, magnification factor or computing time were analyzed. The results obtained were quite positive for both techniques, intensity-based method proving more adequate if the interest is in almost instant results whereas the phase-based method is more appropriate if processing time is not so relevant but the degree of magnification without excessive image noise.

In Europe, the surface devoted to sunflower cultivation has expanded by ∼ 26% from 2006 to 2016. Theoretically, this implies an increasing demand for pollinators, while at the same time, scientific reports claim that pollinator communities worldwide are threatened by multiple stressors such as agrochemicals, the loss of suitable habitats and habitat fragmentation. However, the question that arises is whether insect pollination is still relevant for modern sunflower varieties that are often highly self-fertile. Following recent studies which demonstrate that surrounding land use composition may affect ecosystem service provisioning in cropped fields, this study aims at re-examining the pollination status of sunflower while disentangling the effects of local and landscape variables on sunflower seed set and oil content in Central Italy. Commercial cultivars, regardless of their degree of self-fertility, showed increased seed set and oil content when receiving adequate amounts of cross-pollination; oil composition, though, was not affected by cross-pollination events. Honey bees accounted for the vast majority of pollinators ensuring an overall adequate pollination. Sunflower seed set was higher in fields surrounded by landscapes containing a greater abundance of beehives, early flowering crops, urban areas and woody linear elements; conversely, seed set was lower where herbaceous semi-natural habitats dominated the surrounding landscape. This information is necessary for a science-based planning of agricultural policies and shows that, despite the adoption of self-fertile cultivars, sunflower still benefits from insect pollination and land use planning may affect crop productivity.

La Reforma protestante produjo en Inglaterra profundas transformaciones en la comprensión de la teología cristiana. La literatura demonológica vernácula fue uno de los campos donde más evidentes resultaron las modificaciones. Considerando los tratados de George Gifford, William Perkins y Richard Bernard, publicados entre 1587 y 1629, el presente artículo tiene por objetivo desentrañar la forma en que la alta cultura teologal protestante inglesa planteó el rol de la divinidad y los demonios en el cosmos, así como la relación de aquellos con los hombres. Se intentará demostrar que las demonologías de pluma inglesa poseen dos rasgos idiosincrásicos: el providencialismo y la internaliación de la amenaza demoníaca. A partir de estas ideas, los teólogos mencionados buscaron difundir los postulados fundamentales de la Reforma protestante con el objetivo ulterior de eliminar cualquier resabio de prácticas y creencias asociadas con el papismo. Protestant Reformation produced in England profound transformations in Christian theology. Local demonological literature was one of the fields where those modifications were more evident. Considering the treatises of George Gifford, William Perkins and Richard Bernard, published between 1587 and 1627, this paper aims to unravel the way English protestant high theology conceived the role of God and demons in the cosmos, as well as their relationship with men. This will intend to demonstrate that English demonologies have two idiosyncratic features: providentialism and the internalized nature of demonic threat. From these ideas, the aforesaid theologians sought to spread the essential postulates of the Reformation with the subsequent intention of eliminating any remnant of practices and beliefs associated with popery.

Objectives: To compare the effectiveness in the treatment of erectile dysfunction when using PDE-5 inhibitors (PDE5i), alprostadil (PG-E1) and testosterone (TES) in monotherapy or combination therapy. Material and Methods: Observational multicentre retrospective study of men diagnosed and treated for ED between January 2008 and January 2014. Age, social and employment situation, pathological medical history, risk factors, usual treatments, IIEF-5 at the first consultation and at first and each 6 months follow-ups, physical examination, calculated total and free testosterone and received treatment were analysed. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA analysis, Chi2 for qualitative data, t-test, Fisher's exact test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used; p < 0.05 is considered significant. Results: Average age was 58.61 years, SD5.02, average follow- up time 48.21 months, SD 6.21, range 6-174 months. Out of the patients 76.12% were married, 9.81% divorced/separated, 10.04% single, 4.03% widowed; 85.14% of the total in stable partnership but 66.16% were not accompanied by their partners. In total 844 patients received monotherapy (597 PDE5i; 62 PG-E1; 36 TES; 27 penile prosthesis; 121 psychotherapy/alternative therapies) and 357 combination therapy (167 PDE5i+TES; 124 PDE5i+PGE1; 66 PG-E1+TES). There was a homogeneous distribution between risk factors and medical history groups. Satisfactory response according to IIEF-5 was achieved for 72.33% of patients on PDE5i monotherapy, 46.65% of patients on PDE5i+PG-E1 combination therapy and 83.41% of patients on PDE5i+TES. Conclusions: The best therapeutic success for ED in this series was achieved through a combination of testosterone+PDE-5 inhibitors without increasing morbidity and maintaining the response over time. Larger studies with longer follow-up will corroborate these findings.

Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc), is one of the most destructive diseases of banana and has spread in many plantation areas in Indonesia. Until today, the effective ways to control banana fusarium wilt disease have not yet been found. Some studies indicated thatAllium spp. could be used to suppress plant diseases caused by Fusarium. Allium spp. are important horticultural crops which are generally cultivated in some areas in Indonesia. This research was conducted to determine the effect of several species ofAllium spp. intercropped with banana to improve soil suppressiveness against banana fusarium wilt disease. The results showed that up to 12 months after planting, from 3 species ofAllium spp. (A. tuberosum/ Chinese leek, A. fistulosum/ bunching onion, and A. cepa var. aggregatum/ shallot) intercropped with banana Ambon Kuning (AAA) cultivar, Chinese leek and shallot were able to suppress the incidence of fusarium wilt disease of banana by 46 and 33% respectively. Soil analysis on the rhizosphere of banana intercropped with Chinese leek and shallot had lower population of total Fusarium compared to the other treatments. Analysis of fluorescein diacetate (3’.6’-diacetylfluoerescein) or FDA also showed that total microbial activity in the rhizosphere of banana intercropped withAllium spp. was also lower compared to control treatment (without intercropping). The observation of the effect ofAllium spp. extracts on Foc showed that Allium spp. extracts were able to suppress the development of the colony and spore germination of Foc in vitro. INTISARI Layu Fusarium, yang disebabkan oleh Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense (Foc), merupakan salah satu penyakit tanaman pisang yang paling merusak dan telah tersebar di berbagai daerah di Indonesia. Sampai saat ini cara yang efektif untuk mengendalikan penyakit layu fusarium pisang belum ditemukan. Beberapa penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Allium spp. dapat dipergunakan untuk menekan penyakit tumbuhan yang disebabkan oleh Fusarium. Allium spp. adalah tanaman hortikultura penting yang banyak dibudidayakan di Indonesia. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh beberapa spesiesAllium spp. yang ditumpangsarikan dengan tanaman pisang untuk meningkatkan supresifitas tanah dalam menekan penyakit layu fusarium pisang. Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa sampai 12 bulan setelah tanam, dari 3 spesiesAllium spp. (A. tuberosum/kucai, A. fistulosum/loncang, dan A. cepa var. aggregatum/bawang merah) yang ditumpangsarikan dengan pisang kultivar Ambon Kuning (AAA), kucai dan bawang merah mampu menekan insidensi penyakit layu fusarium pisang berturut-turut sebesar 46% dan 33%. Analisis tanah rhizosfer pisang yang ditumpang sari dengan kucai dan bawang merah menunjukkan populasi total Fusarium yang lebih rendah daripada perlakuan lainnya. Analisis fluorescein diacetate (3’.6’-diacetylfluoerescein) atau FDA juga menunjukkan bahwa aktivitas total mikrobia pada rhizosfer pisang yang ditumpang sari dengan Allium spp. lebih rendah jika dibandingkan dengan perlakuan kontrol (tanpa tumpang sari). Pengamatan pengaruh ekstrak Allium spp. terhadap Foc menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak Allium spp. mampu menekan perkembangan koloni dan perkecambahan spora Foc secara in vitro.

The vast research on organisational justice has focused on the organisation and the supervisor. This study aims to further this line of research by integrating two trends within organisational justice research: the overall approach to justice perceptions and the multifoci perspective of justice judgments. Specifically, this study aims to explore the effects of two additional sources of justice, coworker-focused justice and customer-focused justice, on relevant employees’ outcomes—burnout, turnover intentions, job satisfaction, and workplace deviance— while controlling the effect of organisation-focused justice and supervisor-focused justice. Given the increased importance attributed to coworkers and customers, we expect coworker-focused justice and customer-focused justice to explain incremental variance in the measured outcomes, above and beyond the effects of organisation-focused justice and supervisor-focused justice. Participants will be university students from Austria and Germany employed by service organisations. Data analysis will be conducted using structural equation modeling.

Nevertheless the works carried out around the treatment and the resolution of mathematical problems, new challenges are imposed, one of tho se which is approached article presently in which a model is summarized with focus holistic appropriate to the Cuban context that allows to approach them as practical situations of agreement the limits methodological generals of the subject for the general superior secondary education. The main elements are exposed approached in the project of the author's doctoral thesis, which is endorsed by the results in the practice.

La determinación de factibilidad, accesibilidad y logística para la aplicación de cenizas a áreas forestales, es una tarea compleja que agrupa varios objetivos. Este trabajo se centra en el uso de herramientas de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) en la toma de decisiones para la optimización de la aplicación de cenizas. El estudio se realizó en dos etapas. La primera consideró aspectos ambientales, sociales, culturales y económicos enmarcados en el artículo 12 del decreto 125/2012 de la Xunta de Galicia para determinar la factibilidad de aplicación de cenizas a áreas forestales. En la segunda se determinó la accesibilidad y logística de aplicación a montes forestales de la provincia de Lugo. Para ello se construyó un modelo heurístico e índice de rentabilidad económica por hectárea con ayuda de la herramienta network analyst de ArcGIS. Los resultados muestran que las herramientas de SIG, complementadas con trabajo en campo, facilitan la toma de decisiones y ayudan a redirigir la atención y recursos hacia aquellas superficies con un mayor potencial de aplicación de cenizas.

ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to obtain the first estimates of survival rates (S), capture probability (p) and life expectancy for armadillos in South America by analyzing capture-mark-recapture data obtained from a population of Chaetophractus vellerosus (Gray, 1865) located in Magdalena, Buenos Aires, Argentina. From June 2006 to June 2011, we conducted 16 field surveys that resulted in 365 capture events of 152 adult C. vellerosus. For the survival analysis we used a Cormack-Jolly-Seber (CJS) modelling framework. Interannual variation in S made an important contribution to overall variation in the survival rate of C. vellerosus. The average life expectancy for females and males after attaining sexual maturity was estimated at 1.70 and 1.65 years respectively. The period of lowest survival probability was associated with dry seasons that might have affected the availability of food. This study provides the first estimates of demographic parameters for xenarthrans in South America.

Bacterial diseases of bananas and enset have not received, until recently, an equal amount of attention compared to other major threats to banana production such as the fungal diseases black leaf streak (Mycosphaerella fijiensis) and Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense). However, bacteria cause significant impacts on bananas globally and management practices are not always well known or adopted by farmers. Bacterial diseases in bananas and enset can be divided into three groups: (1) Ralstonia-associated diseases (Moko/Bugtok disease caused by Ralstonia solanacearum and banana blood disease caused by R. syzygii subsp. celebesensis); (2) Xanthomonas wilt of banana and enset, caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. musacearum and (3) Erwinia-associated diseases (bacterial head rot or tip-over disease Erwinia carotovora ssp. carotovora and E. chrysanthemi), bacterial rhizome and pseudostem wet rot (Dickeya paradisiaca formerly E. chrysanthemi pv. paradisiaca). Other bacterial diseases of less widespread importance include: bacterial wilt of abaca, Javanese vascular wilt and bacterial fingertip rot (probably caused by Ralstonia spp., unconfirmed). This review describes global distribution, symptoms, pathogenic diversity, epidemiology and the state of the art for sustainable disease management of the major bacterial wilts currently affecting banana and enset.

Introduction: Transducer calibration is very important for the accurate measurement of pressures during invasive hemodynamic monitoring of patients requiring close observation in the primary care units and in the operating room. Objective: To develop and validate a method of calibration of pressure transducers, which is simple, efficient and low-cost. Methods: An alternative manometric method, based on Pascal's law, was developed for the calibration of pressure transducers during invasive hemodynamic monitoring performed at the intensive care unit of the cardiovascular surgery department at Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital. This method was validated by its comparison with the recommended standard in a total of 215 patients who required invasive hemodynamic monitoring between January and June 2015. Results: With the alternative manometric method created, the same result was obtained as with the hydraulic method recommended by the literature. Conclusions: The alternative method created is accurate, efficient and cost-effective.

Introducción: La calibración de los transductores tiene gran importancia para la medición precisa de las presiones, durante la monitorización hemodinámica invasiva de los pacientes que requieren observación estrecha en las unidades de atención al grave y en el quirófano. Objetivo: Desarrollar y validar un método de calibración para transductores de presión, sencillo, eficaz y de bajo costo. Métodos: Se desarrolló un método manométrico alternativo, basado en la ley de Pascal, para la calibración de los transductores de presión durante la monitorización hemodinámica invasiva que se realiza en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos de Cirugía Cardiovascular del Hospital Clínico-Quirúrgico Hermanos Ameijeiras. Este método fue validado mediante la comparación con el estándar recomendado en un total de 215 pacientes que requirieron monitorización hemodinámica invasiva entre los meses de enero y junio del 2015. Resultados: Con el método manométrico alternativo creado se obtiene el mismo resultado que con el método hidráulico recomendado por la literatura. Conclusiones: El método alternativo creado es preciso, eficaz y costo-efectivo.

Se presentó una paciente de siete años que acudió a Servicio de Urgencias del Centro de Diagnóstico Integral Dr. Ángel López Rondón, municipio García, estado Nueva Esparta, Venezuela, por síncope recurrente, dolor torácico y fiebre. Al explorarla se hallaron componente tricuspídeo muy intenso, ruido protodiastólico intenso y retumbo paraesternal izquierdo bajo modificables al cambio postural, hepatomegalia e ingurgitación yugular. Se realizó un ecocardiograma transtorácico que reveló una masa intracardíaca a nivel del atrio derecho compatible con un mixoma y se intervino quirúrgicamente con éxito, pero sin confirmación histológica. Girard’s work is not systematic. Our research’s works analyse and synthesize the contents of his texts. The purpose of this article is to expose and to clarify his mimetic theory framework, his theory about the human ontogenesis and his interdividual philosophy about the subject, contextualising this in the intersubjective turn of the contemporary philosophy.

One of the specific peculiarities of René Girard’s mimetic theory is the recovery of the concept of conversion. In this article we expose, in a detailed way, the three senses of the conversion according to his thinking: novelistic, religious and epistemological. There is an interaction between the three senses and also different significations for each other.

Maximizers attempt to find the best solution in decision-making, while satisficers feel comfortable with a good enough solution. Recent results pointed out some critical aspects of this decision-making approach and some concerns about its measurement and dimensional structure. In addition to the analysis of these aspects, we tested the possible mediational role of regret in this psychological process. The Maximization Inventory (MI; satisficing, decision difficulty, and alternative search), regret, and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) were translated and adapted to Spanish in order to answer these issues with a Chilean sample. Validity and reliability analysis of the MI reports that only two dimensions of the MI have enough dimensional support (decision difficulty, alternative search). The tested structural model shows good fit of partial mediation effect of regret between decision difficulty and SWLS. At the same time, alternative search has a positive relation with SWLS. These results suggest that Regret becomes crucial for prescribing behavior to decision makers.

Objetive: to characterize the mechanical ventilation on neonates of "Abel Santamaria" Hospital, in Pinar del Rio, Cuba Material and Methods: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study, conducted between August 2009 and March 2013. A total of 164 mechanically ventilated infants were studied in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital Abel Santamaria. We analyzed: gestational age, birth weight, medical history of the mother, causes of ventilation and complications of ventilation Results: 62% were male, gestational age was predominanlly more than 32 weeks, 37% of infants had less than 2500 g. Pregnancy induced hypertension was present as maternal history in 17% of ventilated infants, the most common cause for ventilation was acute respiratory distress syndorme (ARDS), digestive dysfunction occurred in 14% as a complication, pulmonary hemorrhage was the leading cause of death conclusions: The lower the duration of mechanical ventilation, the longer survival. Pulmonary haemorrhage was the leading cause of death.

Los estándares de protección radiológica, se derivan de estimaciones principalmente de estudios epidemiológicos de los supervivientes japoneses de los bombardeos atómicos de Hiroshima y Nagasaki. El reciente accidente nuclear en Fukushima nos muestra que no estamos seguros y despierta el interés de conocer los efectos biológicos de las radiaciones ionizantes a dosis bajas por exposición laboral, mostrando la evidencia epidemiológica, relacionando las dosis y el tiempo de exposición, edad riesgo y tiempo de aparición de trastornos hematopoyéticos. La búsqueda bibliográfica se realizó mediante la selección de los términos MeSH y DeCS para buscar en las diferentes bases de datos. 82 estudios recuperados, más 14 estudios vía búsqueda manual, tras aplicarles los criterios de inclusión y exclusión se seleccionaron para revisión a texto completo 11 estudios: 4 cohorte y 7 casos y controles. Primary pulmonary malignancies are rare in childhood. The most common, pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB), has an incidence of 25–50 cases per year in the United States (Knight and et al., 2019) [1]. The majority of children are diagnosed with PPB before the age of four years. PPB is divided into subtypes I, Ir (type I- regressed), II, and III, which correlates to the age of diagnosis and patient prognosis [2,3].
