Axions are a natural consequence of the Peccei-Quinn mechanism, the most compelling solution to the strong-CP problem. Similar axion-like particles (ALPs) also appear in a number of possible extensions of the Standard Model, notably in string theories. Both axions and ALPs are very well motivated candidates for Dark Matter, and in addition, they would be copiously produced at the sun's core. A relevant effort during the last decade has been the CAST experiment at CERN, the most sensitive axion helioscope to-date. The International Axion Observatory (IAXO) is a large-scale 4th generation helioscope. As its primary physics goal, IAXO will look for solar axions or ALPs with a signal to background ratio of about 5 orders of magnitude higher than CAST. Recently the IAXO collaboration has proposed and intermediate experimental stage, BabyIAXO, conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics, detectors and sun-tracking systems) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as pathfinder for IAXO but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with record and relevant physics reach in itself with potential for discovery. BabyIAXO was endorsed by the Physics Review committee of DESY last May 2019. Strong gravitational lensing provides a wealth of astrophysical information on the baryonic and dark matter content of galaxies. It also serves as a valuable cosmological probe by allowing us to measure the Hubble constant independently of other methods. These applications all require the difficult task of inverting the lens equation and simultaneously reconstructing the mass profile of the lens along with the original light profile of the unlensed source. As there is no reason for either the lens or the source to be simple, we need methods that both invert the lens equation with a large number of degrees of freedom and also enforce a well-controlled regularisation that avoids the appearance of spurious structures. This can be beautifully accomplished by representing signals in wavelet space. Building on the Sparse Lens Inversion Technique (SLIT), in this work we present an improved sparsity-based method that describes lensed sources using wavelets and optimises over the parameters given an analytical lens mass profile. We apply our technique on simulated HST and E-ELT data, as well as on real HST images of lenses from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) sample, assuming a lens model. We show that wavelets allow us to reconstruct lensed sources containing detailed substructures when using both present-day data and high-resolution images from future thirty-meter-class telescopes. Wavelets moreover provide a much more tractable solution in terms of quality and computation time compared to using a source model that combines smooth analytical profiles and shapelets. Requiring very little human interaction, our pixel-based technique fits into the effort to devise automated modelling schemes. It can be incorporated in the standard workflow of sampling analytical lens model parameters. The method, which we call SLITronomy, is freely available as a new plug-in to the modelling software Lenstronomy.

The present study evaluated the capacity of a semi-closed, tubular horizontal photobioreactor (PBR) to remove pesticides from agricultural run-off. The study was carried out in July to study its efficiency under the best conditions (highest solar irradiation). A total of 51 pesticides, including 10 transformation products, were selected and investigated based on their consumption rate and environmental relevance. Sixteen of them were detected in the agricultural run-off, and the estimated removal efficiencies ranged from negative values, obtained for 3 compounds, namely terbutryn, diuron, and imidacloprid, to 100%, achieved for 10 compounds. The acidic herbicide MCPA was removed by 88% on average, and the insecticides 2,4-D and diazinon showed variable removals, between 100% and negative values. The environmental risk associated with the compounds still present in the effluent of the PBR was evaluated using hazard quotients (HQs), calculated using the average and highest measured concentrations of the compounds. HQ values > 10 (meaning high risk) were obtained for imidacloprid (21), between 1 and 10 (meaning moderate risk) for 2,4-D (2.8), diazinon (4.6) and terbutryn (1.5), and < 1 (meaning low risk) for the remaining compounds diuron, linuron, and MCPA. The PBR treatment yielded variable removals depending on the compound, similar to conventional wastewater treatment plants. Topological insulators combine insulating properties in the bulk with scattering-free transport along edges, supporting dissipationless unidirectional energy and information flow even in the presence of defects and disorder. The feasibility of engineering quantum Hamiltonians with photonic tools, combined with the availability of entangled photons, raises the intriguing possibility of employing topologically protected entangled states in optical quantum computing and information processing. However, while two-photon states built as a product of two topologically protected single-photon states inherit full protection from their single-photon "parents", high degree of non-separability may lead to rapid deterioration of the two-photon states after propagation through disorder. We identify physical mechanisms which contribute to the vulnerability of entangled states in topological photonic lattices and present clear guidelines for maximizing entanglement without sacrificing topological protection., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

Dark photons are hypothetical massive vector particles that could mix with ordinary photons. The simplest theoretical model is fully characterised by only two parameters: the mass of the dark photon m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ and its mixing parameter with the photon, $\varepsilon$. The sensitivity of the SHiP detector is reviewed for dark photons in the mass range between 0.002 and 10 GeV. Different production mechanisms are simulated, with the dark photons decaying to pairs of visible fermions, including both leptons and quarks. Exclusion contours are presented and compared with those of past experiments. The SHiP detector is expected to have a unique sensitivity for m$_{\gamma^{\mathrm{D}}}$ ranging between 0.8 and 3.3$^{+0.2}_{-0.5}$ GeV, and $\varepsilon^2$ ranging between $10^{-11}$ and $10^{-17}$.

Electrons in two-dimensional hexagonal materials have valley degree of freedom, which can be used to encode and process quantum information. The valley-selective excitations, governed by the circularly polarised light resonant with the material's band-gap, continues to be the foundation of valleytronics. It is often assumed that achieving valley selective excitation in pristine graphene with all-optical means is not possible due to the inversion symmetry of the system. Here we demonstrate that both valley-selective excitation and valley-selective high-harmonic generation can be achieved in pristine graphene by using the combination of two counter-rotating circularly polarized fields, the fundamental and its second harmonic. Controlling the relative phase between the two colours allows us to select the valleys where the electron-hole pairs and higher-order harmonics are generated. We also describe an all-optical method for measuring valley polarization in graphene with a weak probe pulse. We present $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ imaging of the Calcium-rich supernova (SN) 2019ehk at 276 - 389 days after explosion. These observations represent the latest photometric measurements of a Calcium-rich transient to date and allows for the first opportunity to analyze the late-time evolution of an object in this observational SN class. We find that the late-time bolometric light curve of SN 2019ehk can be described predominantly through the radioactive decay of ${}^{56}\textrm{Co}$ for which we derive a mass of $M({}^{56}\textrm{Co}) = (2.8 \pm 0.1) \times 10^{-2}$$\rm{M}_\odot$. Furthermore, the rate of decline in bolometric luminosity requires the leakage of $\gamma$-rays on timescale $t_{\gamma} = 53.9 \pm 1.30$ days, but we find no statistical evidence for incomplete positron trapping in the SN ejecta. While our observations cannot constrain the exact masses of other radioactive isotopes synthesized in SN 2019ehk, we estimate a mass ratio limit of $M({}^{57}\textrm{Co}) / M({}^{56}\textrm{Co}) \leq 0.030$. This limit is consistent with the explosive nucleosynthesis produced in the merger of low-mass white dwarfs, which is one of the favored progenitor scenarios in early-time studies of SN 2019ehk., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. In this study, we investigate motions in the hot plasma above the flare loops during the 2017 September 10 X8.2 flare event. We examine the region to the south of the main flare arcade, where there is data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), and the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) on Hinode. We find that there are initial blue shifts of 20--60 km/s observed in this region in the Fe XXI line in IRIS and the Fe XXIV line in EIS, and that the locations of these blue shifts move southward along the arcade over the course of about 10 min. The cadence of IRIS allows us to follow the evolution of these flows, and we find that at each location where there is an initial blue shift in the Fe XXIV line, there are damped oscillations in the Doppler velocity with periods of ~400 s. We conclude that these periods are independent of loop length, ruling out magnetoacoustic standing modes as a possible mechanism. Microwave observations from the Expanded Owens Valley Solar Array (EOVSA) indicate that there are non-thermal emissions in the region where the Doppler shifts are observed, indicating that accelerated particles are present. We suggest that the flows and oscillations are due to motions of the magnetic field that are caused by reconnection outflows disturbing the loop-top region., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures

This article describes BabyIAXO, an intermediate experimental stage of the International Axion Observatory (IAXO), proposed to be sited at DESY. IAXO is a large-scale axion helioscope that will look for axions and axion-like particles (ALPs), produced in the Sun, with unprecedented sensitivity. BabyIAXO is conceived to test all IAXO subsystems (magnet, optics and detectors) at a relevant scale for the final system and thus serve as prototype for IAXO, but at the same time as a fully-fledged helioscope with relevant physics reach itself, and with potential for discovery. The BabyIAXO magnet will feature two 10 m long, 70 cm diameter bores, and will host two detection lines (optics and detector) of dimensions similar to the final ones foreseen for IAXO. BabyIAXO will detect or reject solar axions or ALPs with axion-photon couplings down to $g_{a\gamma} \sim 1.5 \times 10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$, and masses up to $m_a\sim 0.25$ eV. BabyIAXO will offer additional opportunities for axion research in view of IAXO, like the development of precision x-ray detectors to identify particular spectral features in the solar axion spectrum, and the implementation of radiofrequency-cavity-based axion dark matter setups., Comment: 77 pages, 49 figures. Time domain science has undergone a revolution over the past decade, with tens of thousands of new supernovae (SNe) discovered each year. However, several observational domains, including SNe within days or hours of explosion and faint, red transients, are just beginning to be explored. Here, we present the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE), a novel optical time-domain survey on the Pan-STARRS telescopes. Our survey is designed to obtain well-sampled $griz$ light curves for thousands of transient events up to $z \approx 0.2$. This large sample of transients with 4-band light curves will lay the foundation for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, providing a critical training set in similar filters and a well-calibrated low-redshift anchor of cosmologically useful SNe Ia to benefit dark energy science. As the name suggests, YSE complements and extends other ongoing time-domain surveys by discovering fast-rising SNe within a few hours to days of explosion. YSE is the only current four-band time-domain survey and is able to discover transients as faint $\sim$21.5 mag in $gri$ and $\sim$20.5 mag in $z$, depths that allow us to probe the earliest epochs of stellar explosions. YSE is currently observing approximately 750 square degrees of sky every three days and we plan to increase the area to 1500 square degrees in the near future. When operating at full capacity, survey simulations show that YSE will find $\sim$5000 new SNe per year and at least two SNe within three days of explosion per month. To date, YSE has discovered or observed 8.3% of the transient candidates reported to the International Astronomical Union in 2020. The Sun is a well-studied astrophysical source of axion-like particles (ALPs), produced mainly through the Primakoff process. Moreover, in the Sun there exist large-scale magnetic fields that catalyze an additional ALP production via a coherent conversion of thermal photons. We study this contribution to the solar ALP emissivity, typically neglected in previous investigations. Furthermore, we discuss additional bounds on the ALP-photon coupling from energy-loss arguments, and the detection perspectives of this new ALP flux at future helioscope and dark matter experiments., Comment: v2: 15 pages, 7 pdf figures. Besides the astrometric mission of the Gaia satellite, its repeated and high-precision measurements serve also as an all-sky photometric transient survey. The sudden brightenings of the sources are published as Gaia Photometric Science Alerts and are made publicly available allowing the community to photometrically and spectroscopically follow-up the object. The goal of this paper was to analyze the nature and derive the basic parameters of Gaia18aen, transient detected at the beginning of 2018. It coincides with the position of the emission line star WRAY 15-136. The brightening was classified as a "nova?" on the basis of subsequent spectroscopic observation. We have analyzed two spectra of Gaia18aen and collected the available photometry of the object covering the brightenings in 2018 and also the preceding and following periods of quiescence. Based on this observational data, we have derived the parameters of Gaia18aen and discussed the nature of the object. Gaia18aen is the first symbiotic star discovered by the Gaia satellite. The system is an S-type symbiotic star and consists of an M giant of a slightly super-solar metallicity, with Teff ~3500 K, a radius of ~230 R$\odot$, and a high luminosity L ~7400 L$\odot$. The hot component is a hot white dwarf. We tentatively determined the orbital period of the system ~487 days. The main outburst of Gaia18aen in 2018 was accompanied by a decrease in the temperature of the hot component. The first phase of the outburst was characterized by the high luminosity L ~27000 L$\odot$, which remained constant for about three weeks after the optical maximum, later followed by the gradual decline of luminosity and increase of temperature. Entangled-photon pairs are an essential resource for quantum information technologies. Chip-scale sources of entangled pairs have been integrated with various photonic platforms, including silicon, nitrides, indium phosphide, and lithium niobate, but each has fundamental limitations that restrict the photon-pair brightness and quality, including weak optical nonlinearity or high waveguide loss. Here, we demonstrate a novel, ultra-low-loss AlGaAs-on-insulator platform capable of generating time-energy entangled photons in a $Q$ $>1$ million microring resonator with nearly 1,000-fold improvement in brightness compared to existing sources. The waveguide-integrated source exhibits an internal generation rate greater than $20\times 10^9$ pairs sec$^{-1}$ mW$^{-2}$, emits near 1550 nm, produces heralded single photons with $>99\%$ purity, and violates Bell's inequality by more than 40 standard deviations with visibility $>97\%$. Combined with the high optical nonlinearity and optical gain of AlGaAs for active component integration, these are all essential features for a scalable quantum photonic platform., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Considering that two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum trioxide has acquired more attention in the last few years, it is relevant to speed up thickness identification of this material. We provide two fast and non-destructive methods to evaluate the thickness of MoO$_3$ flakes on SiO$_2$/Si substrates. First, by means of quantitative analysis of the apparent color of the flakes in optical microscopy images, one can make a first approximation of the thickness with an uncertainty of $\pm3$ nm. The second method is based on the fit of optical contrast spectra, acquired with micro-reflectance measurements, to a Fresnel law-based model that provides an accurate measurement of the flake thickness with $\pm2$ nm of uncertainty., Comment: 5 Figures

Quantum-dot-like WSe$_2$ single-photon emitters have become a promising platform for future on-chip scalable quantum light sources with unique advantages over existing technologies, notably the potential for site-specific engineering. However, the required cryogenic temperatures for the functionality of these sources have been an inhibitor of their full potential. Existing strain engineering methods face fundamental challenges in extending the working temperature while maintaining the emitter's fabrication yield and purity. In this work, we demonstrate a novel method of designing site-specific single-photon emitters in atomically thin WSe$_2$ with near-unity yield utilizing independent and simultaneous strain engineering via nanoscale stressors and defect engineering via electron-beam irradiation. Many of these emitters exhibit exciton-biexciton cascaded emission, purities above 95%, and working temperatures extending up to 150 K, which is the highest observed in van der Waals semiconductor single-photon emitters without Purcell enhancement. This methodology, coupled with possible plasmonic or optical micro-cavity integration, potentially furthers the realization of future scalable, room-temperature, and high-quality van der Waals quantum light sources.

Motivation: With the aim to amplify and make sense of interactions of virus-human proteins in the case of SARS-CoV-2, we performed a structural analysis of the network of protein interactions obtained from the integration of three sources: 1) proteins of virus SARS-CoV-2, 2)physical interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and human proteins, 3) known interactions of these human proteins between them and the dossier of affections in which these proteins are implicated. Results: As a product of this research, we present two networks, one from the interactions virus-host, and the other restricted to host-host, the last one is not usually considered for network analysis. We identified the most important proteins in both networks, those that have the maximal value of calculated invariants, these proteins are considered as the most: affected, connected or those that best monitor the flow of information in the network, among them we find UBC, a human protein related with ubiquination, linked with different stages of coronavirus disease, and ORF7A a virus protein that induces apoptosis in infected cells, associated with virion tethering. Using the constructed networks, we establish the more significant diseases corresponding with human proteins and their connections with other proteins. It is relevant that the identified diseases coincide with comorbidities, particularly the subnetwork of diabetes involves a great quantity of virus and human proteins (56%) and interactions (60%), this could explain the effect of this condition as an important cause of disease complications., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The reconstruction of attosecond beating by interference of two-photon transitions (RABBIT) is one of the most widely used techniques for obtaining both the relative phases of harmonics forming an attosecond pulse train and the phase of atomic radiative transitions. If the latter is computed by theory, it allows to reconstruct the attosecond pulse train; if the former is known experimentally, it allows reconstruction of the electronic dynamics of photoionization in atomic and molecular systems with attosecond temporal resolution. As it relies on the interference of photo-electrons in vacuum, similar interference has never been contemplated inside crystals. Here we explore the applicability of this scheme to solid-state systems using a one-dimensional model and a DFT-calculated structure of 2D hexagonal boron nitride. We discuss the possibility of: (i) reconstructing the relative phases between harmonics with trivial influence of the 'atomic phase', (ii) retrieving the relative phases of two-photon transitions through different bands, which are generally challenging to obtain both experimentally and numerically. These phases are recorded in the beating of the population signal arising from interfering two-photon pathways, and can be read-out with angle-resolved photo-emission spectroscopy. Furthermore, the amplitude of the population beating decays as the pump and probe pulses are separated in time due to electron-hole decoherence, providing a simple interferometric method to extract dephasing times.

As optical two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy (2DCS) is extended to a broader range of applications, it is critical to improve the detection sensitivity of optical 2DCS. We developed a fast phase-cycling scheme in a non-collinear optical 2DCS implementation by using liquid crystal phase retarders to modulate the phases of two excitation pulses. The background in the signal can be eliminated by combining either two or four interferograms measured with a proper phase configuration. The effectiveness of this method was validated in optical 2DCS measurements of an atomic vapor. In van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures formed by stacking two monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides, multiple exciton resonances with highly tunable properties are formed and subject to both vertical and lateral confinement. We investigate how a unique control knob, the twist angle between the two monolayers, can be used to control the exciton dynamics. We observe that the interlayer exciton lifetimes in $\text{MoSe}_{\text{2}}$/$\text{WSe}_{\text{2}}$ twisted bilayers (TBLs) change by one order of magnitude when the twist angle is varied from 1$^\circ$ to 3.5$^\circ$. Using a low-energy continuum model, we theoretically separate two leading mechanisms that influence interlayer exciton radiative lifetimes. The shift to indirect transitions in the momentum space with an increasing twist angle and the energy modulation from the moir\'e potential both have a significant impact on interlayer exciton lifetimes. We further predict distinct temperature dependence of interlayer exciton lifetimes in TBLs with different twist angles, which is partially validated by experiments. While many recent studies have highlighted how the twist angle in a vdW TBL can be used to engineer the ground states and quantum phases due to many-body interaction, our studies explore its role in controlling the dynamics of optically excited states, thus, expanding the conceptual applications of "twistronics".
