Shaker in Chicago: Three Exhibitions on Shaker Art, Design, and Architecture Loyola University Museum of Art, Chicago 7 February–26 April 2015 Curators mounting exhibitions of Shaker objects typically walk a fine line. Do they display these objects as functional artifacts or as exceptional works of art? Shaker in Chicago , mounted by the Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA), attempted to do both, a challenging task, and was not entirely successful in achieving its goal. Although the Shakers produced objects highly regarded by scholars and collectors for their aesthetic value, such as chairs, tables, and oval boxes, they did not think of their products as works of art. Instead, they saw their creations as reflections of their religious and social beliefs as well as means to shape and control behavior in Shaker communities. Shaker in Chicago consisted of three exhibitions. The first two, Gather Up the Fragments: The Andrews Shaker Collection , organized by Hancock Shaker Village and toured by International Arts & Artists, and As It Is in Heaven: The Legacy of Shaker Faith and Design , organized by LUMA, were combined in a series of five galleries. The third exhibition, Order in All Things: Community and Identity in Shaker Architecture , also mounted by LUMA, was located in a separate, but adjacent, corridor gallery. Modern indoor design emphasizes the nature, health and harmony relation between persons and environment. Owning a comfortable and green indoor environment is basic requirement for people. However, the indoor pollution becomes bad seriously day by day. In this paper, the indoor environment and the sources of indoor pollution are analyzed. The method of environment art design for cleaning the indoor pollution is described in detail.

This paper presents a state of the art design of a stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system to provide the required electrical power for a single refrigeration system at Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia. The simulation result shows a total of 1849.7 kW/m2/year horizontal global irradiation available at Kuala Terengganu. After considering losses such as IAM factor, model array miss match etc, the final energy available to the consumer is 5,256 (kWh/year). The energy requirement of the refrigerator system is 83.3% of the energy available.

The minorities in Yunnan are quite skilled at weaving and embroidering techniques, and they boast the unique materials and special textile art form. With the plant material resources in Yunnan, they are able to create numerous kinds of patterns and drawings on the textile fabric, surrounded by the local rural flavor and intense ethnic characteristics. However, with the social and economic development, together with the opening to the outside world, this ethnic textile activity which reserves much of the primitive style and national characteristics has shrunk and stalled at this moment, turning into the modern manufacturing of commercialization. It is a necessity for the textile art design to embody distinctive nationality and local characteristics before opening to the world. At present, it is of great value to study the textile materials and art forms of the minorities in depth and figure out the whole process from the acquisition and preliminary processing of textile raw material to spinning, weaving, printing and dyeing.

Under the development of the social scientific technology, it endangered the environment by the developed mechanism and mass-product which produced many wastes. People should review the design, especially the way of patchwork design. More and more people appreciate the modern fiber art design works which including the patch work design. So, it applies a more expansive space for design developing course. In the thesis, firstly it researches on the fiber art currency and property. Secondly, study the innovative ideas of the patchwork design thought. Lastly, it applies an inspiration on the patchwork design method which based on the sustainable development theory.

This article reports on a survey of the expectations and experiences of first-year students who were enrolled in 2010 on programmes in Art & Design in the United Kingdom. The survey covered 20 institutions and received 778 usable responses. The results indicate considerable variation in both expectations and experiences, and provide a basis for assisting institutions in the UK to enhance their curricular provision at a time when they are faced with radical changes to their funding and to that of their potential students. The approach adopted in this study has a potential value that extends well beyond the boundaries of Art & Design in the United Kingdom.

This work explores retail design from a user experience approach to discuss how consultancies integrate art, design and science in commercial design to create memorable brand experiences. This demand to build a theoretical framework that explores research based user experience and branding in order to facilitate the introduction of key theoretical terms. Subsequently, it examines the relation between art and science within the realm of design in practice. Then, it is possible to choose case studies in which their brands exhibited different approaches to create a coherent identity throughout different touch points when designing their commercial spaces. The aim is to enable professionals to have a holistic view and balanced approach on the design of retail stores considering physical and virtual visual and spatial branding touch points.

The paper provides forming of a conceptual model of visual recursive systems (VRS) for the objects of art design. Approach to identifying types of VRS, based on the discrete analysis (planar external, internal planar, outer surface, inner, outer space, space, internal three-dimensional, external combined domestic combined) are defined. Based on the application of combinatorial analysis and depending on the type of VRS, set of design options for VRS in the objects of art design are defined. В статье предпринята попытка создания концептуальной модели визуальных рекурсивных систем (ВРС) на примере объектов дизайна. На основе применения методов дискретного анализа предложен подход к выявлению типов ВРС (внешние плоскостные, внутренние плоскостные, внешние поверхностные, внутренние поверхностные, внешние объемно-пространственные, внутренние объемно-пространственные, внешние комбинированные, внутренние комбинированные). На основе применения методов комбинаторного анализа определены множества проектных вариантов ВРС для дизайн-проектирование в зависимости от типа ВРС. У статті здійснено спробу формування концептуальної моделі візуальних рекурсивних систем (ВРС) на прикладі об’єктів дизайну. На основі застосування методів дискретного аналізу запропоновано підхід до виявлення типів ВРС (зовнішні площинні, внутрішні площинні, зовнішні поверхневі, внутрішні поверхневі, зовнішні об’ємно-просторові, внутрішні об’ємно-просторові, зовнішні комбіновані, внутрішні комбіновані). ELearning has become essential for learning and teaching over the past number of years. In the mainly practice based course of Textile Art, Design and Fashion the VLE is blended with face to face teaching. Blackboard Learn is essential for the consolidation of the learning, to ensure all students have current and up-to-date information. The use of Blackboard Learn is undoubtedly now such a part of supporting and enhancing the student experience it would be impossible to deliver the key teaching and learning strategies without this platform. Blackboard learn supports a range of diverse learners and enables non-traditional learners to engage in Higher Education. The VLE supports students individual learning needs and this paper will discuss the success of this even in a workshop or manufacturing based subject and how key aspects of Blackboard learn are utilised within the course to support the learning and teaching for successful outcomes.There are risks involved in using the VLE and they need to be identified clearly at the outset, to ensure that risks are monitored and effective solutions are in place in a timely fashion. The rationale is to empower learners and ensure that they excel in professional life through a transformative higher education system, and to lead innovation through flexible, inclusive and an accessible provision that will provide a supportive environment. Innovative approaches to learning, teaching and leadership are encouraged, recognised, valued and rewarded, for all staff and students in Ulster University. The continual pressures of providing a flexible supportive student experience can at times be difficult. The demands on academic staff to deliver course content, administrative duties, maintain networks, industry triangles and commitments to research can at times be overwhelming.There are risks involved in using the VLE and they need to be identified clearly at the outset, to ensure that risks are monitored and effective solutions are in place in a timely fashion.

Art design ethics advocates to promote ecological design, in the purpose of achieving balance and coordination between people, environment and resources.

This thesis has demonstrated the feasibility of setting up the 3D model database and information query platform of Huizhou traditional dwellings decorative art, by using the digital information acquisition and processing technology, and summarized the terminal design method as well. It provides a technical service means and ways for the research of Hui-style dwellings construction, inheritance of Hui-culture and the related art design practice. This terminal provides a new model of the promotion, propaganda, application and development to the world, for the Hui-style dwellings construction decorative art. It will enrich the digital contents of Hui culture, which has the important practical and strategic significance to the construction of "digital Anhui".

The Eurocodes, including Eurocode 5, are of high technical quality. They include state of the art design methods which encompass expertise from all European countries. Feedback from practice nevertheless allows the conclusion that Eurocode 5 in the present form might not find a satisfactory acceptance in the timber construction community. There are indications that practice deems EN 1 995-1-1 too complicated and time intensive for standard timber constructions and partly incomplete when designing more elaborate timber engineering structures. This divergency can be traced back to the widespread types of users and their heterogeneous knowledge in timber structures as well as the wide scope of possible structures for which Eurocode 5 should be applicable. Against this background, the European confederation of woodworking industries initiated a research project with the objective to ameliorate Eurocode 5 in terms of applicability and navigation within the code. The results of this project are presented in this paper. This includes recommendations on how to simplify verification of standard applications as well as possible amendments to better reflect current applications in the timber construction sector. The contribution is finalised by a discussion of different possibilities for size and compositio n of Eurocode 5, based on legal and practical aspects.

The art design in undergraduate education has become very welcome in recent years when our society is in great need of its graduates; therefore, many universities have set up such courses one after another. Then there exists the question how the teaching quality is guaranteed, so it leads to our discussion of the teaching method. This article will discuss the change of teaching method in art design in virtue of the professional capacity of the art design graduates, the current situation of the art design teachers in universities, and the present professional teaching, and it also bring consideration the importance and the practical operation of the school-company cooperation in art design teaching.
