A novel fiber-optic flow velocity sensor based on a twin-core fiber Michelson interferometer has been proposed and demonstrated. The sensor only is a segment of twin-core fiber acting as cylinder cantilever beam. The force exerted on the cylinder by the slow flow speeds of order mm/s of the fluid with unknown velocity bends the fiber, which corresponds to the shift of the phase of the twin-core in-fiber integrated Michelson interferometer. Based on the three-fiber-optic grid interferogram technique, a shape sensing approach has been proposed and demonstrated in this paper. The square and hexagon grid interferometric fringe pattern formed by the fiber-optic interferometric grid generator has been designed and performed. The designing and realizing methods of the fiber-optic interferometric grid pattern by using three PM fibers are discussed. Theoretically, the three-fiber coherence optical field intensity distribution has been deduced. By using the 2-D Fourier transform methodology, the object surface can be reconstructed from the modulated fiber-optic grid interferogram pattern. The multiphase data fusion method has been used in our experiments, which greatly improved the accuracy of the 3-D shape measuring results. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The circular saw blade is widely applied in rock processing; its cutting performance significantly impacts rock processing. Therefore, the numerical simulation model of rock cutting with the flexible circular saw blade has been established to investigate the effects of cutting parameters on the stress and cutting force of circular saw blade, and the damage and stress of rock in the circular saw blade cutting into rock vertically at constant feed speed and rotation speed. The research results indicate that the stress of the saw blade and rock rises with the increase of feed speed and rotation speed of the saw blade. Furthermore, the rock damage and the cutting force of the circular saw blade increase with the increasing feed speed and decrease with increasing rotation speed. The circular saw blade cutting force, vertical force, and horizontal force increase with the rising distance between the double circular saw blade. However, the axial force decreases. The research results of cutting hard rock with the flexible circular saw blade can aid in the optimization of cutting parameters and improve cutting efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, the mobile metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) genes have been found to correspond to one of the most important resistance characters identified in Gram-negative bacteria, severely affecting clinical chemotherapy and threatening public health. The prevalence of mobile MBL genes and their flanking regions in Gram-negative bacteria from diseased pigs in China was investigated. A total of 334 lung samples from diseased pigs were screened for Gram-negative bacteria classified as non-susceptible to meropenem (MIC≥4 mg·L-1). Six isolates, including three Escherichia coli, two Acinetobacter baumanii and one A. calcoaeticus, exhibited MBL production and carried the blaNDM-1 gene. S1-PFGE and Southern blot analysis showed that the blaNDM-1 gene was located on the chromosome of one A. baumanii isolate and on plasmids of various sizes in the other five isolates. MIC testing using broth microdilution revealed that all blaNDM-1-carrying isolates and some of their transconjugants exhibited resistance to almost all β-lactams tested. Whole genome sequencing revealed that the flanking region of the blaNDM-1 gene from all porcine isolates had high levels of similarity with the corresponding regions in human isolates. One porcine E. coli isolate carrying blaNDM-1 was typed as ST48, a common sequence type in human E. coli isolates. These results suggest the possibility of human-to-food animal transfer of blaNDM-1-producing E. coli, highlighting the need for surveillance of carbapenemase producers among bacteria from food animals. In addition, the prudent use of antimicrobial agents to decrease the opportunities for co-selection of carbapenemase genes in food animals is also urgently needed.

We demonstrate a new principle of the laser-induced hammer-hit vibration of a micron-sized black sphere in liquid glycerol with a single divergent Gaussian beam. The light-induced Δα-photophoretic force, which is significantly improved by the vibrating speed of the microparticle, is responsible for both the pushing and pulling force of the hammer-hit vibration. Our approach expands the optical manipulation of microparticle hammer-hit vibration to a liquid medium and provides full control over the trapped particles, including the adjustment of the vibration frequency, amplitude, and position.
