Objective: To evaluate the pattern of energy metabolism of patients with chronic viral severe hepatitis., Methods: Resting energy expenditure (REE) in 55 patients with chronic viral severe was measured with open-circuit indirect calorimetry. Their normal REE was predicted by Harris-Benedict equation (HBE). The patients were to eat the ordinary diet from the department of nutrition of the hospital. The diet was recorded for 3 days., Results: The REE value of the patients with chronic viral severe hepatitis based on cirrhosis was 19.2 +/- 6.1 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), significantly lower than the normal predicted REE (22.1 +/- 2.2 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), P < 0.01). The REE value of the patients with chronic viral severe hepatitis based on chronic hepatitis was 20.7 +/- 6.0 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), significantly lower than the normal predicted REE (23.1 +/- 2.3 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), P < 0.05). The intake of carbohydrates was 21.6 +/- 7.4 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), significantly higher than oxidation amount (7.9 +/- 7.3 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), P < 0.01). While the intake values of fat and protein were 3.4 +/- 1.6 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1) and 4.1 +/- 2.5 kcal.kg(-1).d(-1), both lower than the needed amounts. There was no significant correlation between energy metabolism and liver function. There was a positive correlation between glucose in serum and fat oxidation (r = 0.310, P < 0.05). The serum total protein (TP) level was positively correlated with carbohydrate oxidation (r = 0.362, P < 0.01) and RQ (r = 0.348, P < 0.01); The serum cholesterol level was positively correlated with carbohydrate oxidation (r = 0.338, P < 0.05) and RQ (r = 0.354, P < 0.01). The protein oxidation was negatively correlated with serum TP (r = -0.284, P < 0.05), and serum triglyceride (TG) (r = -0.387, P < 0.05). Fat oxidation was negatively correlated with cholesterol (r = -0.328, P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Hypometablosim is found in severe chronic hepatitis. There is no significant correlation between energy metabolism and liver function. There is certain correlation between energy metabolism and some parameters in serum, such as glucose, TP, cholesterol, and TG. It may decrease the oxidation of fat and protein to increase the oxidation of carbohydrates.

In the environment and living organisms, limited concentrations and complexity of selenium compounds constitute challenges to the analytical techniques. Since their biological activities are dependent on their chemical states and structure, the key issue lies in the selective determination of the particular species of selenium, which is beneficial to clearly understanding its biochemical roles in metabolism, physiology, toxicology, nutrition, and clinical chemistry. For these purposes, the advanced analytical techniques are greatly indispensable. In the present paper, the current status and development trends in the speciation analysis of selenium by hyphenated techniques is selectively reviewed with the emphasis on the coupling of electrophoretic or chromatographic separation with atomic spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, which render element-selective detection and identification of selenium compounds.

Objective: To estimate the efficacy of Gamma knife radiosurgery (GKR) especially as a primary surgical treatment for hypersecreting pituitary adenoma., Methods: One hundred and twenty cases with hypersecreting pituitary adenoma had been treated by Gamma knife radiosurgery. The clinical date had been analysed retrospectively. The tumor margin was covered by an isodose ranging from 45% to 70%. The margin dose was 15 to 32 Gy (mean 28.5 Gy) and the maximum dose varied from 35 to 70 Gy (mean 45.5 Gy). The total number of isocenter was 165 (mean 1-3)., Results: One hundred and eleven cases had been followed-up by hormone level, and 104 cases had been followed-up by image of MRI. The mean follow-up duration was 12-72 months (mean 36 months). The control rate of hormone level was 48.6%, the control rate of tumor growth was 96.2%, the incidence of hypopituitarism was in 2.7% and the incidence of tumor apoplexy was in 0.9% in followed-up cases., Conclusions: As a primary surgical treatment for hypersecreting pituitary adenoma, GKR can be effective and safe in controlling tumor growth and inducing hormonal normalization.

Objective: To study the stability duration of visual acuity after eye injuries in several types, in order to define the earliest and best opportunity for identification., Methods: 160 cases were divided into five groups, in which their stable visual acuity after injuries were divided into several ranges. Then the relationship between stability duration of visual acuity and their visual acuity level, as well as eye injury types were analyzed., Results: Significant correlation existed between eye injury types, stable visual acuity level and stability duration of visual acuity after injuries., Conclusion: The earliest and best opportunity for identification after eyes injuries related to injury types and visual acuity level.
