Abstract

RESUMO Propôs-se, neste trabalho, verificar os efeitos de manejos em Latossolo em recuperação há sete anos. Os tratamentos estudados foram: dois controles, A - Vegetação natural de Cerrado; B - Solo exposto; além dos tratamentos, C - Área apenas com espécie arbórea Gonçalo-Alves (GA) (Astronium fraxinifolium); D - Gonçalo-Alves + Nabo forrageiro (Raphanus sativus) até 2005, substituído pela crotalária (Crotalaria juncea) (GA + C); E - Gonçalo-Alves + Feijão-de-Porco (Canavalia ensiformis) (GA + FP); F - Gonçalo-Alves + Lodo de esgoto (60 t ha-1) + Brachiaria decumbens (GA + LE +B). Não houve convergência com relação aos indicadores da qualidade do solo em recuperação há sete anos; o tratamento GA + Lodo de esgoto + Brachiaria decumbens foi o que melhor respondeu quanto ao teor de matéria orgânica do solo; os tratamentos usados para recuperação do solo tiveram comportamento semelhante relacionado ao da infiltração de água; os tratamentos com GA + Crotalária, GA + Feijão-de-Porco e GA + Lodo de esgoto + Brachiaria decumbens nas imagens tomográficas foram os que apresentaram melhores condições da estrutura do solo; a recuperação atingiu a camada do solo de 0-10 cm. ABSTRACT In this study the objective was to evaluate the effects of different managements on reclamation of an Oxisol for seven years. The treatments were: two controls, A - Savannah vegetation; B - exposed soil; besides the treatment, C - Area with only tree species Astronium fraxinifolium (GA); D - A. fraxinifolium + Raphanus sativus until 2005, replaced by the following Crotalaria juncea (GA + C); E - A. fraxinifolium + Canavalia ensiformis (GA + FP); F - A. fraxinifolium+sewage sludge + Brachiaria decumbens (GA + LE +B). There was no convergence with respect to the behavior of soil quality indicator in recovery for seven years, studied in this work; treatment A. fraxinifolium+sewage sludge + Brachiaria decumbens provided the best response to soil organic matter content; the treatments used for soil reclamation had similar water infiltration; the treatments with A. fraxinifolium + Crotalaria juncea; A. fraxinifolium+Canavalia ensiformis and A. fraxinifolium + sewage sludge + Brachiaria decumbens in soil tomographic images were those with the best conditions of soil structure, the recovery process has reached the soil layer of 0-10 cm.

Abstract

NMR images of laser polarized 3He gas were obtained at 21 G using a simple, homebuilt instrument. At such low fields magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of thermally polarized samples (e.g., water) is not practical. Low-field noble gas MRI has novel scientific, engineering, and medical applications. Examples include portable systems for diagnosis of lung disease, as well as imaging of voids in porous media and within metallic systems.

458. NMR of laser-polarized 129Xe in blood foam

Abstract

Laser-polarized 129Xe dissolved in a foam preparation of fresh human blood was investigated. The NMR signal of 129Xe dissolved in blood was enhanced by creating a foam in which the dissolved 129Xe exchanged with a large reservoir of gaseous laser-polarized 129Xe. The dissolved 129Xe T1 in this system was found to be significantly shorter in oxygenated blood than in deoxygenated blood. The T1 of 129Xe dissolved in oxygenated blood foam was found to be approximately 21 (+/-5) s, and in deoxygenated blood foam to be greater than 40 s. To understand the oxygenation trend, T1 measurements were also made on plasma and hemoglobin foam preparations. The measurement technique using a foam gas-liquid exchange interface may also be useful for studying foam coarsening and other liquid physical properties.

Abstract

Ocular drug delivery has been a major challenge for clinical pharmacologists and biomaterial scientists due to intricate and unique anatomical and physiological barriers in the eye. The critical requirement varies from anterior and posterior ocular segments from a drug delivery perspective. Recently, many new drugs with special formulations have been introduced for targeted delivery with modified methods and routes of drug administration to improve drug delivery efficacy. Current developments in nanoformulations of drug carrier systems have become a promising attribute to enhance drug retention/permeation and prolong drug release in ocular tissue. Biodegradable polymers have been explored as the base polymers to prepare nanocarriers for encasing existing drugs to enhance the therapeutic effect with better tissue adherence, prolonged drug action, improved bioavailability, decreased toxicity, and targeted delivery in eye. In this review, we summarized recent studies on sustained ocular drug/gene delivery and emphasized on the nanocarriers made by biodegradable polymers such as liposome, poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), chitosan, and gelatin. Moreover, we discussed the bio-distribution of these nanocarriers in the ocular tissue and their therapeutic applications in various ocular diseases.

462. Comprehensive Insights Into Composition, Metabolic Potentials, and Interactions Among Archaeal, Bacterial, and Viral Assemblages in Meromictic Lake Shunet in Siberia

Abstract

Microorganisms are critical to maintaining stratified biogeochemical characteristics in meromictic lakes; however, their community composition and potential roles in nutrient cycling are not thoroughly described. Both metagenomics and metaviromics were used to determine the composition and capacity of archaea, bacteria, and viruses along the water column in the landlocked meromictic Lake Shunet in Siberia. Deep sequencing of 265 Gb and high-quality assembly revealed a near-complete genome corresponding to Nonlabens sp. sh3vir. in a viral sample and 38 bacterial bins (0.2-5.3 Mb each). The mixolimnion (3.0 m) had the most diverse archaeal, bacterial, and viral communities, followed by the monimolimnion (5.5 m) and chemocline (5.0 m). The bacterial and archaeal communities were dominated by Thiocapsa and Methanococcoides, respectively, whereas the viral community was dominated by Siphoviridae. The archaeal and bacterial assemblages and the associated energy metabolism were significantly related to the various depths, in accordance with the stratification of physicochemical parameters. Reconstructed elemental nutrient cycles of the three layers were interconnected, including co-occurrence of denitrification and nitrogen fixation in each layer and involved unique processes due to specific biogeochemical properties at the respective depths. According to the gene annotation, several pre-dominant yet unknown and uncultured bacteria also play potentially important roles in nutrient cycling. Reciprocal BLAST analysis revealed that the viruses were specific to the host archaea and bacteria in the mixolimnion. This study provides insights into the bacterial, archaeal, and viral assemblages and the corresponding capacity potentials in Lake Shunet, one of the three meromictic lakes in central Asia. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Observational studies suggest greater height is associated with increased ovarian cancer risk, but cannot exclude bias and/or confounding as explanations for this. Mendelian randomisation (MR) can provide evidence which may be less prone to bias. METHODS: We pooled data from 39 Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium studies (16,395 cases; 23,003 controls). We applied two-stage predictor-substitution MR, using a weighted genetic risk score combining 609 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Study-specific odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between genetically predicted height and risk were pooled using random-effects meta-analysis. RESULTS: Greater genetically predicted height was associated with increased ovarian cancer risk overall (pooled-OR (pOR) = 1.06; 95% CI: 1.01-1.11 per 5 cm increase in height), and separately for invasive (pOR = 1.06; 95% CI: 1.01-1.11) and borderline (pOR = 1.15; 95% CI: 1.02-1.29) tumours. CONCLUSIONS: Women with a genetic propensity to being taller have increased risk of ovarian cancer. This suggests genes influencing height are involved in pathways promoting ovarian carcinogenesis.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Prokaryotic microbes, the most abundant organisms in the ocean, are remarkably diverse. Despite numerous studies of marine prokaryotes, the zonation of their communities in pelagic zones has been poorly delineated. By exploiting the persistent stratification of the South China Sea (SCS), we performed a 2-year, large spatial scale (10, 100, 1000, and 3000 m) survey, which included a pilot study in 2006 and comprehensive sampling in 2007, to investigate the biological zonation of bacteria and archaea using 16S rRNA tag and shotgun metagenome sequencing. RESULTS: Alphaproteobacteria dominated the bacterial community in the surface SCS, where the abundance of Betaproteobacteria was seemingly associated with climatic activity. Gammaproteobacteria thrived in the deep SCS, where a noticeable amount of Cyanobacteria were also detected. Marine Groups II and III Euryarchaeota were predominant in the archaeal communities in the surface and deep SCS, respectively. Bacterial diversity was higher than archaeal diversity at all sampling depths in the SCS, and peaked at mid-depths, agreeing with the diversity pattern found in global water columns. Metagenomic analysis not only showed differential %GC values and genome sizes between the surface and deep SCS, but also demonstrated depth-dependent metabolic potentials, such as cobalamin biosynthesis at 10 m, osmoregulation at 100 m, signal transduction at 1000 m, and plasmid and phage replication at 3000 m. When compared with other oceans, urease at 10 m and both exonuclease and permease at 3000 m were more abundant in the SCS. Finally, enriched genes associated with nutrient assimilation in the sea surface and transposase in the deep-sea metagenomes exemplified the functional zonation in global oceans. Background: While Veterans with 50%+ service connection are entitled to VA disability compensation and prioritised VA care, little is known about disability compensation and medical care expenditures/utilisation among Vietnam Era Veterans with 50%+ service connection Methods: We analysed 836 917 Vietnam Era Veterans with service-connected disabilities in 2013 For males (n=828 861) and females (n=8056), we describe total and per-patient FY2013 VA disability compensation and medical care expenditures/utilisation associated with 50%+ service-connection status (0-40% vs 50%+), and Medicare-eligible age status (age <65 vs age 65+) Results: Overall, those with 50%+ service connection (males = $10 315/28 visits; females = $12 146/36 visits) had higher mean per-patient FY2013 VA medical care expenditures and outpatient utilisation, relative to those rated 0-40% (males = $5520/17 visits; females = $6735/22 visits) By contrast, those who were Medicareeligible age (males = $9779/27 visits; females = $10 575/32 visits) had lower VA mean per-patient FY2013 medical care expenditures and outpatient utilisation, relative to those below Medicare-eligible age (males = $11 377/31 visits; females = $13 290/39 visits) Conclusions: For Vietnam Era Veterans with 50%+ service connection, lower per-patient VA medical care expenditures and outpatient utilisation among those of Medicare-eligible age raises the possibility that medical care substitution effects may occur even among those with cost-free VA care Prospective follow-up studies based on VA/Medicare data are needed to evaluate this possibility. Abstract

ImportanceOne of the most important causes of vision abnormalities in children is amblyopia (also known as "lazy eye"). Amblyopia is an alteration in the visual neural pathway in a child's developing brain that can lead to permanent vision loss in the affected eye. Among children younger than 6 years, 1% to 6% have amblyopia or its risk factors (strabismus, anisometropia, or both). Early identification of vision abnormalities could prevent the development of amblyopia.Subpopulation considerationsStudies show that screening rates among children vary by race/ethnicity and family income. Data based on parent reports from 2009-2010 indicated identical screening rates among black non-Hispanic children and white non-Hispanic children (80.7%); however, Hispanic children were less likely than non-Hispanic children to report vision screening (69.8%). Children whose families earned 200% or more above the federal poverty level were more likely to report vision screening than families with lower incomes.ObjectiveTo update the 2011 US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommendation on screening for amblyopia and its risk factors in children.Evidence reviewThe USPSTF reviewed the evidence on the accuracy of vision screening tests and the benefits and harms of vision screening and treatment. Surgical interventions were considered to be out of scope for this review.FindingsTreatment of amblyopia is associated with moderate improvements in visual acuity in children aged 3 to 5 years, which are likely to result in permanent improvements in vision throughout life. The USPSTF concluded that the benefits are moderate because untreated amblyopia results in permanent, uncorrectable vision loss, and the benefits of screening and treatment potentially can be experienced over a child's lifetime. The USPSTF found adequate evidence to bound the potential harms of treatment (ie, higher false-positive rates in low-prevalence populations) as small. Therefore, the USPSTF concluded with moderate certainty that the overall net benefit is moderate for children aged 3 to 5 years.Conclusions and recommendationsThe USPSTF recommends vision screening at least once in all children aged 3 to 5 years to detect amblyopia or its risk factors. Abstract

We report strong interfacial exchange coupling in Bi2Se3/yttrium iron garnet (YIG) bilayers manifested as large in-plane interfacial magnetic anisotropy (IMA) and enhancement of damping probed by ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The IMA and spin mixing conductance reached a maximum when Bi2Se3 was around 6 quintuple-layer (QL) thick. The unconventional Bi2Se3 thickness dependence of the IMA and spin mixing conductance are correlated with the evolution of surface band structure of Bi2Se3, indicating that topological surface states play an important role in the magnetization dynamics of YIG. Temperature-dependent FMR of Bi2Se3/YIG revealed signatures of magnetic proximity effect of $T_c$ as high as 180 K, and an effective field parallel to the YIG magnetization direction at low temperature. Abstract

Mechanisms of neuroimmune and mitochondrial dysfunction have been repeatedly implicated in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To examine these mechanisms in ASD individuals, we measured the in vivo expression of the 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO), an activated glial marker expressed on mitochondrial membranes. Participants underwent scanning on a simultaneous magnetic resonance–positron emission tomography (MR–PET) scanner with the second-generation TSPO radiotracer [11C]PBR28. By comparing TSPO in 15 young adult males with ASD with 18 age- and sex-matched controls, we showed that individuals with ASD exhibited lower regional TSPO expression in several brain regions, including the bilateral insular cortex, bilateral precuneus/posterior cingulate cortex, and bilateral temporal, angular, and supramarginal gyri, which have previously been implicated in autism in functional MR imaging studies. No brain region exhibited higher regional TSPO expression in the ASD group compared with the control group. A subset of participants underwent a second MR–PET scan after a median interscan interval of 3.6 months, and we determined that TSPO expression over this period of time was stable and replicable. Furthermore, voxelwise analysis confirmed lower regional TSPO expression in ASD at this later time point. Lower TSPO expression in ASD could reflect abnormalities in neuroimmune processes or mitochondrial dysfunction.

Abstract

This work is a study of phase transformation in (001)-cut Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)1-xTixO3 (x=48%) single crystals by means of dielectric permittivity, domain structure, and in situ x-ray diffraction. A first-order T(TNT)-C(TNT) phase transition was observed at the Curie temperature TC≅518 K upon zero-field heating. T, TNT, and C are tetragonal, tetragonal nanotwin, and cubic phases, respectively. T(TNT) and C(TNT) indicate that minor TNT domains reside in the T and C matrices. Nanotwins, which can cause broad diffraction peak, remain above TC≅518 K and give an average microscopic cubic symmetry in the polarizing microscopy. Colossal dielectric permittivity (>104) was observed above room temperature with strong frequency dispersion. This study suggests that nanotwins can play an important role in relaxor ferroelectric crystals while phase transition takes place. Abstract

The phase transformation of annealed and poled 0.955Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.045PbTiO3 (PZN-4.5%PT) single crystals has been studied by means of combined bulk property measurements (dielectric permittivity and thermal current density measurements) and microstructural characterization (polarized light microscope and high-resolution x-ray diffraction). Our results showed that upon heating under zero-field condition, poled PZN-4.5%PT undergoes a R-(R+RNT+T+TNT)-(T+TNT)-C transformation sequence, where (R+RNT) and (T+TNT) denote that the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases present consist of a mixture of microscopic (R,T) and nanotwin (RNT,TNT) domains and C denotes the cubic phase. The RNT and TNT nanotwin domains were detected only in the temperature vicinity of the R-T transformation, possibly as a means to alleviate the transformation stress in the material. Diffractions pertaining to rhombohedral and tetragonal nanotwins are detected. These diffractions can easily be mistaken as the monoclinic diffractions, which, however, are not supported by our thermal current measurement. Abstract

This work discusses the temperature-dependent forward current-voltage characteristics of an AlGaInP light-emitting diode. From 300 to 470 K, all curves have the same ideality factor of n=1.58. The temperature-dependent saturation currents are in excellent agreement with the thermal activation behavior over ten decades of current and with an activation energy of Ea=1.405 eV. Based on the discussion of the barrier for forward current flow, nEa corresponds to the band gap of the active layer. Various mechanisms of current flow for pn junctions and Schottky diodes were examined and verified. Therefore, the nEa=2.22 eV of the sample corresponds to the band gap of the barriers in the active layer. This value is consistent with the band gap of (AlxGa1-x)0.5In0.5P for x>0.58. Abstract

The origin of the extremely broad peak at the lower 2θ side of the main (002) rhombohedral x-ray peak in an unpoled (001)-cut Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.955Ti0.045O3 (PZN-4.5%PT) single crystal has been examined. This peak, located at about 2θ∼43°–44°, was absent on fractured surfaces of the crystal but reappeared when the fractured surfaces were polished mechanically. High-resolution synchrotron x-ray mesh scans revealed that the as-polished surface was covered with a “deformed layer” of heavily stressed rhombohedral phase of monoclinic symmetry having its c axis lying perpendicular to the surface. This deformed phase can be structurally likened to one full of “incipient monoclinic nuclei/phases,” which are microscopic in size and subject to intense compression in the plane of the surface. With a given polishing direction, this surface layer showed parallel domain patterns when viewed under the polarized light microscope. This surface layer could be largely eliminated by appropriate poling at 0.7–1.5 kV/mm at room temperature but became resistant to poling after annealing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
