Habitat changes in temperate forests are more vulnerable to climate change than tropical or boreal forests. This study assessed forest habitat suitability and diversity to determine the impact of climate change on the Korean Peninsula. We used the MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) species distribution model, three key climate indices, and two representative climate change scenarios, using short and long-term data. Two of the three key climate indices related to temperature were more capricious than the precipitation-related index in the future. In the baseline prediction, both statistical and qualitative validation using the actual vegetation map showed excellent results. Regarding forest habitat suitability, northward migration and substantial increase were definitely distinctive in warm temperate evergreen forest. On the other hand, subalpine forest areas decreased significantly due to climate change; the suitable area for Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 8.5 2070s decreased by more than half. With regard to forest habitat diversity, regions with high diversity declined due to climate change. In the RCP 8.5 scenario, areas where all three forest types are suitable no longer appeared; however, in the case of RCP 4.5 2050s, suitable areas for two forest types increased, which implies climate change is not only negative in terms of diversity. As this negative prediction of future change is discouraging, active mitigation and adaptation are required to prevent these changes. The article discusses a research paper on the precedence, causes and consequences of large wildfires. It references the study "Medieval Warming Initiated Exceptionally Large Wildfire Outbreaks in the Rocky Mountains," by W. J. Calder et al., published in a 2015 issue of the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences". It examines the nature of wildfire in subalpine forests and the response of subalpine forest fire regimes to climatic warming.

The article presents a study which examines the ground activity of Leadbeater's possum Gymnobelideus leadbeateri at the subalpine snowgum woodland located in Mount Baw Baw, Victoria. The study conducts a trapping sessions under the approval of the Deakin University Animal Ethics Committee and the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. Results show that G. leadbeateri may forage on the ground due to shortage of food resources in the canopies and may use dens at ground level.

Summary: Plastic waste is of increasing concern in marine ecosystems [1–3]. Buoyant plastic particles accumulate in pelagic habitats whereas non-floating debris accumulates on the seafloor and in beach sediments, posing risk to the respective communities [1–4]. Microplastic particles (<5 mm) are either directly introduced via sewage discharge or formed by biofouling and mechanical abrasion, making them more prone to consumption by aquatic organisms [2,3]. As a consequence, they can accumulate in higher trophic levels [3–5]. A variety of harmful effects of plastic and associated chemicals has been shown [2–4]. Moreover, plastic debris can act as vector for alien species and diseases [2,6]. A large portion of the plastic waste is produced onshore and reaches the marine environment, which is considered the main sink of plastic debris. There is, however, a considerable lack of knowledge on the contamination of freshwater ecosystems with plastic debris. We here show that freshwater ecosystems also act, at least temporarily, as a sink for plastic particles. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
