The present paper deals with investigation into the relation between the lenght-weigth ratio (LWR) and the nutrition as a part of the fundamental studies on the nutritional control of the aged.The results obtained from 77 subjects of the old people's home are as follows:(1) Correlation among 3 indices on LWR (Broca's index, LWR by Ministry of Public Welfare in Japan and the index reported by Matsuki) was very high.(2) Specialized tendency in each taste of the obesity and emaciation was observed.(3) Relationship between several clinical signs and variations on LWR of the aged was clarified.

A phenomenon similar to that described for influenza viruses by von Magnus was found in the growth of SV40 in African green monkey kidney cultures. In serial undiluted passages, the yield of infectious virus decreased markedly, but the yield of virus-associated CF antigen was only slightly reduced. It was also shown that a factor, probably an incomplete form of the virus, in undiluted passage stocks, interferes with the replication of virus.

Various autoantibodies have been reported to be detected during the progression of infectious mononucleosis. We observed a case of infectious mononucleosis due to Epstein–Barr virus primary infection for 2 months, and noticed the transiently increased titer of thyrotropin receptor autoantibodies detected at the acute phase on the 3rd day after admission. At that time, real-time quantitative PCR also revealed the mRNA expressions of an immediate early lytic gene, BZLF1, and a latent gene, EBNA2. The expression of BZLF1 mRNA means that Epstein–Barr virus infects lytically, and EBNA2 protein has an important role in antibody production as well as the establishment of Epstein–Barr virus latency. These results suggest that Epstein–Barr virus lytic infection is relevant to thyrotropin receptor autoantibody production. Thyrotropin receptor autoantibodies stimulate thyroid follicular cells to produce excessive thyroid hormones and cause Graves’ disease. Recently, we reported the thyrotropin receptor autoantibody production from thyrotropin receptor autoantibody-predisposed Epstein–Barr virus-infected B cells by the induction of Epstein–Barr virus lytic infection in vitro. This case showed in vivo findings consistent with our previous reports, and is important to consider the pathophysiology of Graves’ disease and one of the mechanisms of autoimmunity.

Inclusion crystals of 7-bromo-1,4,8-triphenyl-2,3-benzo[3.3.0]octa-2,4,7-trien-6-one (1a) and its chloro-derivative (1b) showed a reversible colour change from yellow to green on exposure to UV-light, and this depends on the guest molecules present. The crystal structures of the inclusion complex were determined by X-ray analysis.

The reacion of L-alanine (L-ala) with Fe(NO3)2·9H2O in the presence of H5dhpta (1,3-diamino-2-hydroxypropane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic acid) and base (NaOH) affords the novel tetranuclear complex Na[Fe4(dhpta)2(O)(OH)(L-ala)2]·6H2O having L-alaninato bridges and an (Fe4(O2H))9+ core whose crystal structure and magnetic properties were determined.

In the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), misfolded and unfolded proteins are eliminated by a process called ER-associated protein degradation (ERAD) in order to maintain cell homeostasis. In the ERAD pathway, several ER-localized E3 ubiquitin ligases target ERAD substrate proteins for ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation. However, little is known about how the functions of the ERAD ubiquitin ligases are regulated. Recently, USP19, an ER-anchored deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB), has been suggested to be involved in the regulation of ERAD. In this study, HRD1, an ERAD ubiquitin ligase, is shown to be a novel substrate for USP19. We demonstrate that USP19 rescues HRD1 from proteasomal degradation by deubiquitination of K48-linked ubiquitin chains. In addition, the altered expression of USP19 affects the steady-state levels of HRD1. These results suggest that USP19 regulates the stability of HRD1 and provide insight into the regulatory mechanism of the ERAD ubiquitin ligases.
