In this present work, we report the growth, optical, and electrical studies of inorganic single crystals of manganese sulfate and FeCl3-doped manganese sulfate grown by slow evaporation technique. Crystal structure and lattice parameters of the grown crystals were determined using powder X-ray diffraction and the studies confirm the formation of orthorhombic structure. The UV–vis spectroscopic measurement illustrates the grown crystals with good optical transparency in the visible region and less absorbance. Optical constants such as the band gap, refractive index, extinction coefficient, optical and electrical conductance reveals the good optical response of the material. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis infers that there is a small change in the peak position and transmittance in the case of MnS:Fe3+crystal which ensures the incorporation of Fe3+ion to the host crystal. Second harmonic generation efficiency tested by Kurtz and Perry method showed the improvement in relative conversion efficiency compared with potassium dihydrogen phosphate. Graphene oxide was produced using a modified Hummers method and used to produce a MnSO 4 –graphene oxide (MnSO 4 –GO) hybrid which was then transformed into a MnO–graphene hybrid by precipitation with NaOH followed by hydrogen reduction. The MnO–graphene hybrid shows a high specific capacity of 870 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 as an anode material for lithium ion batteries, which is much higher than that of bare MnO (around 456 mAh g −1 ). A capacity of 390 mAh g −1 could be maintained even at a high current density of 1600 mA g −1 . Ortho­rhom­bic Mn(SO3)(H2O)3 has been reinvestigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction in two possible space groups, viz. P212121 (with all atoms in general positions) and Pnma (with the mol­ecule bisected by a mirror plane). The results confirm the lower symmetry assigned in a previous single-crystal neutron diffraction study. However, the refinement of the P212121 model requires the introduction of racemic twinning and soft positional and displacement restraints for the H atoms. The importance of a scrupulous report on symmetry absence violations as standard policy in crystallographic work is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
