Abstract

Ample research exists and focuses on teenagers' understanding of interpersonal privacy on social media. Less is known about younger children's understanding of privacy and data protection, especially in institutional and commercial data processing contexts. We have spoken to 83 children aged 9–12 years old in two public primary schools in the city of Ghent, Belgium. During the 16 workshops we conducted (which consisted of a focus group stage and a co-design exercise), we discussed children's everyday (online) activities and practices, their understanding of and views on interpersonal and institutional privacy, the privacy management techniques they use and the rights they have. The findings of our participatory research with young children provide insight into children's ideas and views about these issues. We report on a number of children's recommendations on how exactly information about privacy and data protection should be provided to them. The research has the potential to guide and inform both policymaking and the practical design of privacy and data policies by actors who process children's personal data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two new microsporidia, Anostracospora rigaudi n. g., n. sp., and Enterocytospora artemiae n. g., n. sp. infecting the intestinal epithelium of Artemia parthenogenetica Bowen and Sterling, 1978 and Artemia franciscana Kellogg, 1906 in southern France are described. Molecular analyses revealed the two species belong to a clade of microsporidian parasites that preferentially infect the intestinal epithelium of insect and crustacean hosts. These parasites are morphologically distinguishable from other gut microsporidia infecting Artemia. All life cycle stages have isolated nuclei. Fixed spores measure 1·3×0·7 μm with 5–6 polar tube coils for A. rigaudi and 1·2×0·9 μm with 4 polar tube coils for E. artemiae. Transmission of both species is horizontal, most likely through the ingestion of spores released with the faeces of infected hosts. The minute size of these species, together with their intestinal localization, makes their detection and identification difficult. We developed two species-specific molecular markers allowing each type of infection to be detected within 3–6 days post-inoculation. Using these markers, we show that the prevalence of these microsporidia ranges from 20% to 75% in natural populations. Hence, this study illustrates the usefulness of molecular approaches to study prevalent, but cryptic, infections involving microsporidian parasites of gut tissues. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

Part 2: Workshop and Tutorial Papers; International audience; Concerns about selective exposure and filter bubbles in the digital news environment trigger questions regarding how news recommender systems can become more citizen-oriented and facilitate – rather than limit – normative aims of journalism. Accordingly, this chapter presents building blocks for the construction of such a news algorithm as they are being developed by the Ghent University interdisciplinary research project #NewsDNA, of which the primary aim is to actually build, evaluate and test a diversity-enhancing news recommender. As such, the deployment of artificial intelligence could support the media in providing people with information and stimulating public debate, rather than undermine their role in that respect. To do so, it combines insights from computer sciences (news recommender systems), law (right to receive information), communication sciences (conceptualisations of news diversity), and computational linguistics (automated content extraction from text). To gather feedback from scholars of different backgrounds, this research has been presented and discussed during the 2019 IFIP summer school workshop on ‘co-designing a personalised news diversity algorithmic model based on news consumers’ agency and fine-grained content modelling’. This contribution also reflects the results of that dialogue.

Sociale media zijn alomtegenwoordig. Zowel in onze persoonlijke levenssfeer als op het werk, in familiale context of in onze hoedanigheid van consument zijn ze niet meer weg te denken. Door de democratische toegang tot sociale media, waarvoor men enkel een e-mailadres en een beperkte computerkennis nodig heeft, zijn sociale media uitgegroeid tot de grootste hype van het begin van deze eeuw. Hoewel de sociale media vele voordelen bieden, bleven inbreuken en misbruiken niet uit. De snelheid en dominantie waarmee sociale media hoe langer hoe meer ons internetgebruik sturen, roepen een brede waaier van juridische vragen op. Ouders stellen zich vragen over het socialemediagebruik van hun kinderen, consumenten over hun vrijheid en privacy, overheden over de gevaren van het circuleren van zoveel persoonsgegevens. Bedrijven onderzoeken de invloed van sociale media op hun klantenrelaties, op hun naam en reputatie. Ondernemers worstelen evenzeer met de bescherming van hun intellectuele eigendommen en zijn bovendien genoodzaakt positie in te nemen ten opzichte van het gebruik van sociale media door en voor hun werknemers.
