Although the electrophysiological event-related potential in face processing (e.g. N170) is widely accepted as a face-sensitivity biomarker that is deficient in children with autism spectrum disorders, the time-varying brain networks during face recognition are still awaiting further investigation. To explore the social deficits in autism spectrum disorder, especially the time-varying brain networks during face recognition, the current study analyzed the N170, cortical activity, and time-varying networks under 3 tasks (face-upright, face-inverted, and house-upright) in autism spectrum disorder and typically developing children. The results revealed a smaller N170 amplitude in autism spectrum disorder compared with typically developing, along with decreased cortical activity mainly in occipitotemporal areas. Concerning the time-varying networks, the atypically stronger information flow and brain network connections across frontal, parietal, and temporal regions in autism spectrum disorder were reported, which reveals greater effort was exerted by autism spectrum disorder to obtain comparable performance to the typically developing children, although the amplitude of N170 was still smaller than that of the typically developing children. Different brain activation states and interaction patterns of brain regions during face processing were discovered between autism spectrum disorder and typically developing. Given a multitude of genetic and environmental factors, when investigating the variability in schizophrenia (SCZ) and the first-degree relatives (R-SCZ), latent disease-specific variation is usually hidden. To reliably investigate the mechanism underlying the brain deficits from the aspect of functional networks, we newly iterated a framework of contrastive variational autoencoders (cVAEs) applied in the contrasts among three groups, to disentangle the latent resting-state network patterns specified for the SCZ and R-SCZ. We demonstrated that the comparison in reconstructed resting-state networks among SCZ, R-SCZ, and healthy controls (HC) revealed network distortions of the inner-frontal hypoconnectivity and frontal-occipital hyperconnectivity, while the original ones illustrated no differences. And only the classification by adopting the reconstructed network metrics achieved satisfying performances, as the highest accuracy of 96.80% ± 2.87%, along with the precision of 95.05% ± 4.28%, recall of 98.18% ± 3.83%, and F1-score of 96.51% ± 2.83%, was obtained. Objective . The decision-making behavior of the proposer is a key factor in achieving effective and equitable maintenance of social resources, particularly in economic interactions, and thus understanding the neurocognitive basis of the proposer's decision-making is a crucial issue. Yet the neural substrate of the proposer's decision behavior, especially from the resting-state network perspective, remains unclear. Approach . In this study, we investigated the relationship between the resting-state network and decision proposals and further established a multivariable model to predict the proposers' unfair offer rates in the ultimatum game. Main results. The results indicated the unfair offer rates of proposers are significantly related to the resting-state frontal-occipital and frontal-parietal connectivity in the delta band, as well as the network properties. And compared to the conservative decision group (low unfair offer rate), the risk decision group (high unfair offer rate) exhibited stronger resting-state long-range linkages. Finally, the established multivariable model did accurately predict the unfair offer rates of the proposers, along with a correlation coefficient of 0.466 between the actual and predicted behaviors. Together, these findings demonstrated that related resting-state frontal-occipital and frontal-parietal connectivity may serve as a dispositional indicator of the risky behaviors for the proposers and subsequently predict a highly complex decision-making behavior, which contributed to the development of artificial intelligence decision-making system with biological characteristics as well., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Key Message: A new interaction was found between PMA1 and GRF4. H 2 S promotes the interaction through persulfidated Cys446 of PMA1. H 2 S activates PMA1 to maintain K + /Na + homeostasis through persulfidation under salt stress. Plasma membrane H + -ATPase (PMA) is a transmembrane transporter responsible for pumping protons, and its contribution to salt resistance is indispensable in plants. Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a small signaling gas molecule, plays the important roles in facilitating adaptation of plants to salt stress. However, how H 2 S regulates PMA activity remains largely unclear. Here, we show a possible original mechanism for H 2 S to regulate PMA activity. PMA1, a predominant member in the PMA family of Arabidopsis, has a non-conservative persulfidated cysteine (Cys) residue (Cys446), which is exposed on the surface of PMA1 and located in cation transporter/ATPase domain. A new interaction of PMA1 and GENERAL REGULATORY FACTOR 4 (GRF4, belongs to the 14-3-3 protein family) was found by chemical crosslinking coupled with mass spectrometry (CXMS) in vivo. H 2 S-mediated persulfidation promoted the binding of PMA1 to GRF4. Further studies showed that H 2 S enhanced instantaneous H + efflux and maintained K + /Na + homeostasis under salt stress. In light of these findings, we suggest that H 2 S promotes the binding of PMA1 to GRF4 through persulfidation, and then activating PMA, thus improving the salt tolerance of Arabidopsis., (© 2023. Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder characterized by recurring seizures, but its underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Despite extensive research, there are still gaps in our knowledge about the relationship between brain dynamics and seizures. In this study, our aim is to address these gaps by proposing a novel approach to assess the role of brain network dynamics in the onset of seizures. Specifically, we investigate the relationship between brain dynamics and seizures by tracking the distance to criticality. Our hypothesis is that this distance plays a crucial role in brain state changes and that seizures may be related to critical transitions of this distance. To test this hypothesis, we develop a method to measure the evolution of the brain network's distance to the critical dynamic systems (i.e., the distance to the tipping point, DTP) using dynamic network biomarker theory and random matrix theory. The results show that the DTP of the brain decreases significantly immediately after onset of an epileptic seizure, suggesting that the brain loses its well-defined quasi-critical state during seizures. We refer to this phenomenon as the "criticality of the criticality" (COC). Furthermore, we observe that DTP exhibits a shape transition before and after the onset of the seizures. This phenomenon suggests the possibility of early warning signal (EWS) identification in the dynamic sequence of DTP, which could be utilized for seizure prediction. Our results show that the Hurst exponent, skewness, kurtosis, autocorrelation, and variance of the DTP sequence are potential EWS features. Risky decision-making is affected by past feedback, especially after encountering the beneficial loss in the past decision-making round, yet little is known about the mechanism accounting for the distinctive decision-making that different individuals may make under the past loss context. We extracted decision functional medial frontal negative (MFN) and the cortical thickness (CT) from multi-modality electroencephalography (EEG) and T1-weighted structural MRI (sMRI) datasets to assess the individual risky decision under the past loss context. First, concerning the MFN, the low-risk group (LRG) exhibits larger MFN amplitude and longer reaction time than the high-risk group (HRG) when making risky decisions under the loss context. Subsequently, the sMRI analysis reveals a greater CT in the left anterior insula (AI) for HRG compared with LRG, and a greater CT in AI is associated with a high level of impulsivity, driving individuals to make risky choices under the past loss context. Furthermore, for all participants, the corresponding risky decision behavior could be exactly predicted as a correlation coefficient of 0.523 was acquired, and the classification by combing the MFN amplitude and the CT of the left AI also achieves an accuracy of 90.48% to differentiate the two groups. Objective: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (anti-NMDARE) is autoimmune encephalitis with a characteristic neuropsychiatric syndrome and persistent cognition deficits even after clinical remission. The objective of this study was to uncover the potential noninvasive and quantified biomarkers related to residual brain distortions in convalescent anti-NMDARE patients., Methods: Based on resting-state electroencephalograms (EEG), both power spectral density (PSD) and brain network analysis were performed to disclose the persistent distortions of brain rhythms in these patients. Potential biomarkers were then established to distinguish convalescent patients from healthy controls., Results: Oppositely configured spatial patterns in PSD and network architecture within specific rhythms were identified, as the hyperactivated PSD spanning the middle and posterior regions obstructs the inter-regional information interactions in patients and thereby leads to attenuated frontoparietal and frontotemporal connectivity. Granger causality-based effective brain connectivity provides a powerful tool to probe the neural mechanism for information processing and the potential features for brain computer interfaces. However, in real applications, traditional Granger causality is prone to the influence of outliers, such as inevitable ocular artifacts, resulting in unreasonable brain linkages and the failure to decipher inherent cognition states. In this work, motivated by constructing the sparse causality brain networks under the strong physiological outlier noise conditions, we proposed a dual Laplacian Granger causality analysis (DLap-GCA) by imposing Laplacian distributions on both model parameters and residuals. In essence, the first Laplacian assumption on residuals will resist the influence of outliers in electroencephalogram (EEG) on causality inference, and the second Laplacian assumption on model parameters will sparsely characterize the intrinsic interactions among multiple brain regions. Through simulation study, we quantitatively verified its effectiveness in suppressing the influence of complex outliers, the stable capacity for model estimation, and sparse network inference. The application to motor-imagery (MI) EEG further reveals that our method can effectively capture the inherent hemispheric lateralization of MI tasks with sparse patterns even under strong noise conditions. The MI classification based on the network features derived from the proposed approach shows higher accuracy than other existing traditional approaches, which is attributed to the discriminative network structures being captured in a timely manner by DLap-GCA even under the single-trial online condition. Basically, these results consistently show its robustness to the influence of complex outliers and the capability of characterizing representative brain networks for cognition information processing, which has the potential to offer reliable network structures for both cognitive studies and future brain-computer interface (BCI) realization.

Despite node-centric studies revealing an association between resting-state functional connectivity and individual risk propensity, the prediction of future risk decisions remains undetermined. Herein, we applied a recently emerging edge-centric method, the edge community similarity network (ECSN), to alternatively describe the community structure of resting-state brain activity and to probe its contribution to predicting risk propensity during gambling. Results demonstrated that inter-individual variability of risk decisions correlates with the inter-subnetwork couplings spanning the visual network (VN) and default mode network (DMN), cingulo-opercular task control network, and sensory/somatomotor hand network (SSHN). Particularly, participants who have higher community similarity of these subnetworks during the resting state tend to choose riskier and higher yielding bets. And in contrast to low-risk propensity participants, those who behave high-risky show stronger couplings spanning the VN and SSHN/DMN. Eventually, based on the resting-state ECSN properties, the risk rate during the gambling task is effectively predicted by the multivariable linear regression model at the individual level. Human cognition is usually underpinned by intrinsic structure and functional neural co-activation in spatially distributed brain regions. Owing to lacking an effective approach to quantifying the covarying of structure and functional responses, how the structural-functional circuits interact and how genes encode the relationships, to deepen our knowledge of human cognition and disease, are still unclear. Here, we propose a multimodal covariance network (MCN) construction approach to capture interregional covarying of the structural skeleton and transient functional activities for a single individual. We further explored the potential association between brain-wide gene expression patterns and structural-functional covarying in individuals involved in a gambling task and individuals with major depression disorder (MDD), adopting multimodal data from a publicly available human brain transcriptomic atlas and 2 independent cohorts. MCN analysis showed a replicable cortical structural-functional fine map in healthy individuals, and the expression of cognition- and disease phenotype-related genes was found to be spatially correlated with the corresponding MCN differences. Further analysis of cell type-specific signature genes suggests that the excitatory and inhibitory neuron transcriptomic changes could account for most of the observed correlation with task-evoked MCN differences. In contrast, changes in MCN of MDD patients were enriched for biological processes related to synapse function and neuroinflammation in astrocytes, microglia, and neurons, suggesting its promising application in developing targeted therapies for MDD patients. The brain functions as an accurate circuit that regulates information to be sequentially propagated and processed in a hierarchical manner. However, it is still unknown how the brain is hierarchically organized and how information is dynamically propagated during high-level cognition. In this study, we developed a new scheme for quantifying the information transmission velocity (ITV) by combining electroencephalogram (EEG) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and then mapped the cortical ITV network (ITVN) to explore the information transmission mechanism of the human brain. The application in MRI-EEG data of P300 revealed bottom-up and top-down ITVN interactions subserving P300 generation, which was comprised of four hierarchical modules. Among these four modules, information exchange between visual- and attention-activated regions occurred at a high velocity, related cognitive processes could thus be efficiently accomplished due to the heavy myelination of these regions. Moreover, inter-individual variability in P300 was probed to be attributed to the difference in information transmission efficiency of the brain, which may provide new insight into the cognitive degenerations in clinical neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease, from the transmission velocity perspective. Objective . Despite electroencephalography (EEG) being a widely used neuroimaging technique with an excellent temporal resolution, in practice, the signals are heavily contaminated by artifacts masking responses of interest in an experiment. It is thus essential to guarantee a prompt and effective detection of artifacts that provides quantitative quality assessment (QA) on raw EEG data. This type of pipeline is crucial for large-scale EEG studies. However, current EEG QA studies are still limited. Approach . In this study, combined from a big data perspective, we therefore describe a quantitative signal quality assessment pipeline, a stable and general threshold-based QA pipeline that automatically integrates artifact detection and new QA measures to assess continuous resting-state raw EEG data. One simulation dataset and two resting-state EEG datasets from 42 healthy subjects and 983 clinical patients were utilized to calibrate the QA pipeline. Main Results . The results demonstrate that (1) the QA indices selected are sensitive: they almost strictly and linearly decrease as the noise level increases; (2) stable, replicable QA thresholds are valid for other experimental and clinical EEG datasets; and (3) use of the QA pipeline on these datasets reveals that high-frequency noises are the most common noises in EEG practice. Nitric oxide (NO), a small signaling gas molecule, participates in several growth and developmental processes in plants. However, how NO regulates cell wall biosynthesis remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate a positive effect of NO on cellulose content that may be related to S-nitrosylation of cellulose synthase 1 (CESA1) and CESA9. Two S-nitrosylated cysteine (Cys) residues, Cys562 and Cys641, which are exposed on the surface of CESA1 and CESA9 and located in the cellulose synthase catalytic domain, were identified to be S-nitrosylated. Meanwhile, Cys641 was located on the binding surface of CESA1 and CESA9, and Cys562 was very close to the binding surface. Cellulose synthase complexes (CSCs) dynamics are closely associated with cellulose content. S-nitrosylation of CESA1 and CESA9 improved particles mobility and thus increased the accumulation of cellulose in Arabidopsis hypocotyl cells. An increase in hemicellulose content as well as an alteration in pectin content facilitated cell wall extension and contributed to cell growth, finally promoting elongation of Arabidopsis hypocotyls. Accurately decoding motor imagery (MI) brain-computer interface (BCI) tasks has remained a challenge for both neuroscience research and clinical diagnosis. Unfortunately, less subject information and low signal-to-noise ratio of MI electroencephalography (EEG) signals make it difficult to decode the movement intentions of users. In this study, we proposed an end-to-end deep learning model, a multi-branch spectral-temporal convolutional neural network with channel attention and LightGBM model (MBSTCNN-ECA-LightGBM), to decode MI-EEG tasks. We first constructed a multi branch CNN module to learn spectral-temporal domain features. Subsequently, we added an efficient channel attention mechanism module to obtain more discriminative features. Finally, LightGBM was applied to decode the MI multi-classification tasks. The within-subject cross-session training strategy was used to validate classification results. The experimental results showed that the model achieved an average accuracy of 86% on the two-class MI-BCI data and an average accuracy of 74% on the four-class MI-BCI data, which outperformed current state-of-the-art methods. The proposed MBSTCNN-ECA-LightGBM can efficiently decode the spectral and temporal domain information of EEG, improving the performance of MI-based BCIs.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a core deficit in social processes. However, it is still unclear whether the core clinical symptoms of the disorder can be reflected by the temporal variability of resting-state network functional connectivity (FC). In this article, we examined the large-scale network FC temporal variability at the local region, within-network, and between-network levels using the fuzzy entropy technique. Then, we correlated the network FC temporal variability to social-related scores. We found that the social behavior correlated with the FC temporal variability of the precuneus, parietal, occipital, temporal, and precentral. Our results also showed that social behavior was significantly negatively correlated with the temporal variability of FC within the default mode network, between the frontoparietal network and cingulo-opercular task control network, and the dorsal attention network. In contrast, social behavior correlated significantly positively with the temporal variability of FC within the subcortical network. Finally, using temporal variability as a feature, we construct a model to predict the social score of ASD. These findings suggest that the network FC temporal variability has a close relationship with social behavioral inflexibility in ASD and may serve as a potential biomarker for predicting ASD symptom severity., (© The Author(s) 2022. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is frequently misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to similar clinical symptoms. In this study, we constructed frequency-based multilayer resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) networks and extracted representative network features to improve the differentiation between AD and FTD. When compared with healthy controls (HC), AD showed primarily stronger delta-alpha cross-couplings and weaker theta-sigma cross-couplings. Notably, when comparing the AD and FTD groups, we found that the AD exhibited stronger delta-alpha and delta-beta connectivity than the FTD. Thereafter, by extracting the representative network features and then applying these features in the classification between AD and FTD, an accuracy of 81.1% was achieved. Finally, a multivariable linear regressive model was built, based on the differential topologies, and then adopted to predict the scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale. Accordingly, the predicted and actual measured scores were indeed significantly correlated with each other ( r = 0.274, p = 0.036). These findings consistently suggest that frequency-based multilayer resting-state networks can be utilized for classifying AD and FTD and have potential applications for clinical diagnosis.

As a kind of biological network, the brain network conduces to understanding the mystery of high-efficiency information processing in the brain, which will provide instructions to develop efficient brain-like neural networks. Large-scale dynamical functional network connectivity (dFNC) provides a more context-sensitive, dynamical, and straightforward sight at a higher network level. Nevertheless, dFNC analysis needs good enough resolution in both temporal and spatial domains, and the construction of dFNC needs to capture the time-varying correlations between two multivariate time series with unmatched spatial dimensions. Effective methods still lack. With well-developed source imaging techniques, electroencephalogram (EEG) has the potential to possess both high temporal and spatial resolutions. Therefore, we proposed to construct the EEG large-scale cortical dFNC based on brain atlas to probe the subtle dynamic activities in the brain and developed a novel method, that is, wavelet coherence-S estimator (WTCS), to assess the dynamic couplings among functional subnetworks with different spatial dimensions. The simulation study demonstrated its robustness and availability of applying to dFNC. The application in real EEG data revealed the appealing "Primary peak" and "P3-like peak" in dFNC network properties and meaningful evolutions in dFNC network topology for P300. Our study brings new insights for probing brain activities at a more dynamical and higher hierarchical level and pushing forward the development of brain-inspired artificial neural networks. The proposed WTCS not only benefits the dFNC studies but also gives a new solution to capture the time-varying couplings between the multivariate time series that is often encountered in signal processing disciplines.

Objective. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) emerges as a useful therapy for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) clinically. Whereas the mechanisms of action of rTMS on ASD are not fully understood, and no biomarkers until now are available to reliably predict the follow-up rTMS efficacy in clinical practice. Approach. In the current work, the temporal variability was investigated in resting-state electroencephalogram of ASD patients, and the nonlinear complexity of related time-varying networks was accordingly evaluated by fuzzy entropy. Main results. The results showed the hyper-variability in the resting-state networks of ASD patients, while three week rTMS treatment alleviates the hyper fluctuations occurring in the frontal-parietal and frontal-occipital connectivity and further contributes to the ameliorative ASD symptoms. In addition, the changes in variability network properties are closely correlated with clinical scores, which further serve as potential predictors to reliably track the long-term rTMS efficacy for ASD. P300 as an effective biomarker to index attention and memory has been widely used for brain-computer interface, cognitive evaluation, and clinical diagnosis. To evoke clear P300, an oddball paradigm consisting of two types of stimuli, i.e., infrequent target stimuli and frequent standard stimuli, is usually used. However, to simply and quickly explore the P300-related process, previous studies predominately focused on the target condition but ignored the fusion of target and standard conditions, as well as the difference of brain networks between them. Therefore, in this study, we used the hidden Markov model to investigate the fused multi-conditional electroencephalogram dataset of P300, aiming to effectively identify the underlying brain networks and explore the difference between conditions. Specifically, the inferred networks, including their transition sequences and spatial distributions, were scrutinized first. Then, we found that the difference between target and standard conditions was mainly concentrated in two phases. One was the stimulation phase that mainly related to the cortical activities of the postcentral gyrus and superior parietal lobule, and the other corresponded to the response phase that involved the activities of superior and medial frontal gyri. This might be attributed to distinct cognitive functions, as the stimulation phase is associated with visual information integration whereas the response phase involves stimulus discrimination and behavior control. Hemiplegia is a common dysfunction caused by the brain stroke and leads to movement disability. Although the lateralization of movement-related potential, the event-related desynchronization, and more complicated inter-regional information coupling have been investigated, seldom studies have focused on investigating the dynamic information exchanging among multiple brain regions during motor execution for post-stroke hemiplegic patients. With high temporal-resolution electroencephalogram (EEG), the time-varying network is able to reflect the dynamical complex network modalities corresponding to the movements at a millisecond level. In our present study, the wrist extension experiment was designed, along with related EEG datasets being collected. Thereafter, the corresponding time-varying networks underlying the wrist extension were accordingly constructed by adopting the adaptive directed transfer function and then statistically explored, to further uncover the dynamic network deficits (i.e., motor dysfunction) in post-stroke hemiplegic patients. Results of this study found the effective connectivity between the stroked motor area and other areas decreased in patients when compared to healthy controls; on the contrary, the enhanced connectivity between non-stroked motor areas and other areas, especially the frontal and parietal-occipital lobes, were further identified for patients during their accomplishing the designed wrist extension, which might dynamically compensate for the deficited patients' motor behaviors. Cognitive processes induced by the specific task are underpinned by intrinsic anatomical structures with functional neural activation patterns. However, current covariance network analysis still pays much attention to brain morphologies or baseline activity due to the lack of an effective method for capturing the structural-functional covarying during tasks. Here, a multimodal covariance network (MCN) construction method was proposed to identify inter-regional covariations of the structural skeleton and functional activities by simultaneous magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalogram (EEG). Results from two independent cohorts confirmed that MCNs could capture cognition-specific hierarchical modules in joint comprehensive multimodal features well, especially when time-resolved EEG was further integrated. The quantitative evaluation further demonstrates significantly larger modularity of MCN integrating fine-grained features from EEG. The application to the discovery cohort identified prominent modular covarying across the default mode and salience networks at rest, while the visual oddball task was accomplished by synchronous structural-functional cooperation within networks associated with attention control and working memory updating. Strikingly, the results of an external validation cohort showed a different covariant pattern corresponding to decision-specific cognitive modules. Overall, the results suggested that multimodal covariance analysis provides a reliable definition of multistate neural cognitive networks, further discloses modular-specific structural and functional co-variation.

The clinical therapy of schizophrenia (SCZ) replies on the corresponding accurate and reliable recognition. Although efforts have been paid, the diagnosis of SCZ is still roughly subjective, it is thus urgent to search for related objective physiological parameters. Motivated by the great potential of resting-state networks in underling the brain deficits among different SCZ groups, in this study, we then developed a multi-class feature extraction approach that could effectively extract the spatial network topology and facilitate the recognition of the SCZ, by combining a network structure based supervised learning with an ensemble co-decision strategy. The results demonstrated that the multi-class spatial pattern of the network (MSPN) features outperformed the other conventional electrophysiological features, such as relative power spectrums and network properties, and achieved the highest classification accuracy of 71.58% in the alpha band. Brain network analysis is one efficient tool in exploring human brain diseases and can differentiate the alterations from comparative networks. The alterations account for time, mental states, tasks, individuals, and so forth. Furthermore, the changes determine the segregation and integration of functional networks that lead to network reorganization (or reconfiguration) to extend the neuroplasticity of the brain. Exploring related brain networks should be of interest that may provide roadmaps for brain research and clinical diagnosis. Recent electroencephalogram (EEG) studies have revealed the secrets of the brain networks and diseases (or disorders) within and between subjects and have provided instructive and promising suggestions and methods. This review summarized the corresponding algorithms that had been used to construct functional or effective networks on the scalp and cerebral cortex. To promote the rehabilitation of motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP), we developed motor imagery (MI) based training system to assist their motor rehabilitation. Eighteen CP children, ten in short- and eight in long-term rehabilitation, participated in our study. In short-term rehabilitation, every 2 days, the MI datasets were collected; whereas the duration of two adjacency MI experiments was ten days in the long-term protocol. Meanwhile, within two adjacency experiments, CP children were requested to daily rehabilitate the motor function based on our system for 30 min. In both strategies, the promoted motor information processing was observed. In terms of the relative signal power spectra, a main effect of time was revealed, as the promoted power spectra were found for the last time of MI recording, compared to that of the first one, which first validated the effectiveness of our intervention. Moreover, as for network efficiency related to the motor information processing, compared to the first MI, the increased network properties were found for the last MI, especially in long-term rehabilitation in which CP children experienced a more obvious efficiency promotion. "Bad channels" are common phenomena during scalp electroencephalography (EEG) recording that arise due to various technique-related reasons, and reconstructing signals from bad channels is an inevitable choice in EEG processing. However, current interpolation methods are all based on purely mathematical interpolation theory, ignoring the neurophysiological basis of the EEG signals, and their performance needs to be further improved, especially when there are many scattered or adjacent bad channels. Therefore, a new interpolation method, named the reference electrode standardization interpolation technique (RESIT), was developed for interpolating scalp EEG channels. Resting-state and event-related EEG datasets were used to investigate the performance of the RESIT. The main results showed that (1) assuming 10% bad channels, RESIT can reconstruct the bad channels well; (2) as the percentage of bad channels increased (from 2% to 85%), the absolute and relative errors between the true and RESIT-reconstructed signals generally increased, and the correlations between the true and RESIT signals decreased; (3) for a range of bad channel percentages (2% ~ 85%), the RESIT had lower absolute error (approximately 2.39% ~ 33.5% reduction), lower relative errors (approximately 1.3% ~ 35.7% reduction) and higher correlations (approximately 2% ~ 690% increase) than traditional interpolation methods, including neighbor interpolation (NI) and spherical spline interpolation (SSI). In addition, the RESIT was integrated into the EEG preprocessing pipeline on the WeBrain cloud platform ( https://webrain.uestc.edu.cn/ ). These results suggest that the RESIT is a promising interpolation method for both separate and simultaneous EEG preprocessing that benefits further EEG analysis, including event-related potential (ERP) analysis, EEG network analysis, and strict group-level statistics.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder with childhood onset characterized by chronic motor and vocal tics; however, the current diagnosis of TS patients is subjective, as it is mainly assessed based on the parents' description alongside specific evaluations. The early and accurate diagnosis of TS based on its potential symptoms in children would be of benefit in their future therapy, but reliable diagnoses are difficult due to the lack of objective knowledge of the etiology and pathogenesis of TS. In this study, resting-state electroencephalograms were first collected from 36 patients and 21 healthy controls (HCs); the corresponding resting-state functional networks were then constructed, and the potential differences in network topology between the two groups were extracted by using the topology of the spatial pattern of the network (SPN). Compared to the HCs, the TS patients exhibited decreased frontotemporal/occipital/parietal connectivity. When classifying the two groups, compared to the network properties, the derived SPN features achieved a much higher accuracy of 92.31%. The intrinsic long-range connectivity between the frontal and the temporal/occipital/parietal lobes was damaged in the patient group, and this dysfunctional network pattern might serve as a reliable biomarker to differentiate TS patients from HCs as well as to assess the severity of tic symptoms.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in the brain that is characterized by unprovoked seizures. Epileptic seizures are attributed to abnormal synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. To detect the seizure as early as possible, the identification of specific electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics is of great importance in investigating the transition of brain activity as the epileptic seizure approaches. In this study, we investigated the transition of brain activity from interictal to preictal states preceding a seizure by combining EEG network and clustering analyses together in different frequency bands. The findings of this study demonstrated the best clustering performance of k-medoids in the beta band; in addition, compared to the interictal state, the preictal state experienced increased synchronization of EEG network connectivity, characterized by relatively higher network properties. Mentally imagining rather physically executing the motor behaviors is defined as motor imagery (MI). During MI, the mu rhythmical oscillation of cortical neurons is the event-related desynchronization (ERD) subserving the physiological basis of MI-based brain-computer interface. In our work, we investigated the specific brain network reconfiguration from rest idle to MI task states, and also probed the underlying relationship between the brain network reconfiguration and MI related ERD. Findings revealed that comparing to rest state, the MI showed the enhanced motor area related linkages and the deactivated activity of default mode network. In addition, the reconfigured network index was closely related to the ERDs, i.e., the higher the reconfigured network index was, the more obvious the ERDs were. These findings consistently implied that the reconfiguration from rest to task states underlaid the reallocation of related brain resources, and the efficient brain reconfiguration corresponded to a better MI performance, which provided the new insights into understanding the mechanism of MI as well as the potential biomarker to evaluate the rehabilitation quality for those patients with deficits of motor function.

Objective: The electroencephalographic (EEG) inverse problem is ill-posed owing to the electromagnetism Helmholtz theorem and since there are fewer observations than the unknown variables. Apart from the strong background activities (ongoing EEG), evoked EEG is also inevitably contaminated by strong outliers caused by head movements or ocular movements during recordings., Methods: Considering the sparse activations during high cognitive processing, we propose a novel robust EEG source imaging algorithm, LAPPS (Least Absolute -P (0 < p < 1) Penalized Solution), which employs the -loss for the residual error to alleviate the effect of outliers and another -penalty norm (p=0.5) to obtain sparse sources while suppressing Gaussian noise in EEG recordings. The resulting optimization problem is solved using a modified ADMM algorithm., Results: Simulation study was performed to recover sparse signals of randomly selected sources using LAPPS and various methods commonly used for EEG source imaging including WMNE, -norm, sLORETA and FOCUSS solution. The simulation comparison quantitatively demonstrates that LAPPS obtained the best performances in all the conducted simulations for various dipoles configurations under various SNRs on a realistic head model. Moreover, in the localization of brain neural generators in a real visual oddball experiment, LAPPS obtained sparse activations consistent with previous findings revealed by EEG and fMRI., Conclusion: This study demonstrates a potentially useful sparse method for EEG source imaging, creating a platform for investigating the brain neural generators., Significance: This method alleviates the effect of noise and recovers sparse sources while maintaining a low computational complexity due to the cheap matrix-vector multiplication.
