We present JADES JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy of GN-z11, the most luminous candidate z > 10 Lyman break galaxy in the GOODS-North field with MUV = −21.5. We derive a redshift of z = 10.603 (lower than previous determinations) based on multiple emission lines in our low and medium resolution spectra over 0.7 − 5.3 μm. We significantly detect the continuum and measure a blue rest-UV spectral slope of β = −2.4. Remarkably, we see spatially extended Lyman-α in emission (despite the highly neutral intergalactic medium expected at this early epoch), offset 555 km s−1 redwards of the systemic redshift. From our measurements of collisionally excited lines of both low and high ionisation (including [O II] λ3727, [Ne III] λ3869, and C III] λ1909), we infer a high ionisation parameter (log U ∼ −2). We detect the rarely seen N IV] λ1486 and N III] λ1748 lines in both our low and medium resolution spectra, with other high ionisation lines seen in the low resolution spectrum, such as He II (blended with O III]) and C IV (with a possible P-Cygni profile). Based on the observed rest-UV line ratios, we cannot conclusively rule out photoionisation from an active galactic nucleus (AGN), although the high C III]/He II and N III]/He II ratios are compatible with a star formation explanation. If the observed emission lines are powered by star formation, then the strong N III] λ1748 observed may imply an unusually high N/O abundance. Balmer emission lines (Hγ, Hδ) are also detected, and if powered by star formation rather than an AGN, we infer a star formation rate of ∼20 − 30 M⊙ yr−1 (depending on the initial mass function) and low dust attenuation. Our NIRSpec spectroscopy confirms that GN-z11 is a remarkable galaxy with extreme properties seen 430 Myr after the Big Bang. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present emission-line ratios from a sample of 27 Lyman-break galaxies from z ∼ 5.5 − 9.5 with −17.0 < M1500 < −20.4, measured from ultra-deep JWST/NIRSpec multi-object spectroscopy from the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES). We used a combination of 28 h deep PRISM/CLEAR and 7 h deep G395M/F290LP observations to measure, or place strong constraints on, ratios of widely studied rest-frame optical emission lines including Hα, Hβ, [O II] λλ3726, 3729, [Ne III] λ3869, [O III] λ4959, [O III] λ5007, [O I] λ6300, [N II] λ6583, and [S II] λλ6716, 6731 in individual z > 5.5 spectra. We find that the emission-line ratios exhibited by these z ∼ 5.5 − 9.5 galaxies occupy clearly distinct regions of line-ratio space compared to typical z ∼ 0 − 3 galaxies, instead being more consistent with extreme populations of lower-redshift galaxies. This is best illustrated by the [O III]/[O II] ratio, tracing interstellar medium (ISM) ionisation, in which we observe more than half of our sample to have [O III]/[O II] > 10. Our high signal-to-noise spectra reveal more than an order of magnitude of scatter in line ratios such as [O II]/Hβ and [O III]/[O II], indicating significant diversity in the ISM conditions within the sample. We find no convincing detections of [N II] λ6583 in our sample, either in individual galaxies, or a stack of all G395M/F290LP spectra. The emission-line ratios observed in our sample are generally consistent with galaxies with extremely high ionisation parameters (log U ∼ −1.5), and a range of metallicities spanning from ∼0.1 × Z⊙ to higher than ∼0.3 × Z⊙, suggesting we are probing low-metallicity systems undergoing periods of rapid star formation, driving strong radiation fields. We present rest-frame optical data of the compact z = 5.55 galaxy GS_3073 obtained using the integral field spectroscopy mode of the Near-InfraRed Spectrograph on board the James Webb Space Telescope. The galaxy's prominent broad components in several hydrogen and helium lines (though absent in the forbidden lines) and v detection of a large equivalent width of He IIλ4686, EW(He II) ∼20 Å, unambiguously identify it as an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We measured a gas phase metallicity of Zgas/Z⊙∼0.21−0.04+0.08 Z gas / Z ⊙ ∼ 0. 21 − 0.04 + 0.08 $ Z_{\mathrm{gas}}/Z_\odot\sim0.21^{+0.08}_{-0.04} $ , which is lower than what has been inferred for both more luminous AGN at a similar redshift and lower redshift AGN. We empirically show that classical emission line ratio diagnostic diagrams cannot be used to distinguish between the primary ionisation source (AGN or star formation) for systems with such low metallicity, though different diagnostic diagrams involving He IIλ4686 prove very useful, independent of metallicity. We measured the central black hole mass to be log(MBH/M⊙)∼8.2 ± 0.4 based on the luminosity and width of the broad line region of the Hα emission. While this places GS_3073 at the lower end of known high-redshift black hole masses, it still appears to be overly massive when compared to its host galaxy's mass properties. We detected an outflow with a projected velocity ≳700 km s−1 and inferred an ionised gas mass outflow rate of about 100 M⊙ yr−1, suggesting that one billion years after the Big Bang, GS_3073 is able to enrich the intergalactic medium with metals. Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious complication following cardiac surgery associated with increased mortality. Red blood cell transfusion enhances the risk of developing AKI. However, the impact of other blood products on AKI is virtually unexplored. The aim of this study was to explore if transfusion of red blood cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelets alone or in combination were associated with postoperative AKI.Methods: Patients undergoing elective on-pump cardiac surgery were included (n = 1960) between 2012 to 2014. Transfusion data were collected intraoperatively and until the first postoperative day. AKI was classified according to the KDIGO criteria. Data were analysed using univariate and stepwise multiple logistic regression with adjustment for clinical risk factors and complementary blood products.Results: AKI was observed in 542 patients (27.7%). In univariate analysis and following adjustment for clinical risk factors, administration of red blood cells, freshfrozen plasma and platelets were all independently associated with KDIGO stage 2-3. Following additional adjustment for complementary blood products, only red blood cell transfusion remained significantly associated with AKI. A dose-dependent association between volume of red blood cells and degree of AKI severity was observed.Conclusion: Transfusion of all blood products in a dose-dependent manner increased the risk for AKI. However, in multivariate analysis combining all blood products, only red blood cell transfusion remained significantly associated with AKI development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Acute kidney injury is a serious complication following cardiac surgery associated with mortality. Restricted oxygen delivery is a potential risk factor for acute kidney injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the duration of low oxygen delivery (<272 mL  min-1  m-2 ), during cardiopulmonary bypass on kidney function.Methods: Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery ± valve repair were included n = 1968. Oxygen delivery was monitored during cardiopulmonary bypass. Data were explored using multiple regression analyses regarding association between low oxygen delivery and renal replacement therapy (RRT), acute kidney injury (AKI) and post-operative peak serum creatinine (PPSC).Results: Post-operative peak serum creatinine, incidence of acute kidney injury, and need for dialysis increased in a dose-dependent manner in relation to duration of a mean oxygen delivery <272 mL  min-1  m-2 . Using multiple regression analyses, only exposure for at least 30 minutes was independently associated with increased PPSC and AKI. In contrast, both short (1-5 min, OR: 2.58 [1.20, 5.54]; P = .015) and at least 30-minute (OR: 2.85 [1.27-6.41]; P = .011) exposure to low DO2 were both independently associated with the need for RRT.Conclusion: A low oxygen delivery during cardiopulmonary bypass was in a dose-dependent manner associated with an increased risk of renal injury. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will enable the detection of optical emission lines in galaxies spanning a broad range of luminosities out to redshifts |$z$|  ≳ 10. Measurements of key galaxy properties, such as star formation rate and metallicity, through these observations will provide unique insight into, e.g. the role of feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in regulating galaxy evolution, the co-evolution of AGNs and host galaxies, the physical origin of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies, and the contribution by star-forming galaxies to cosmic reionization. We present an original framework to simulate and analyse observations performed with the near-infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST. We use the beagle tool (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds) to build a semi-empirical catalogue of galaxy spectra based on photometric spectral energy distributions of dropout galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). We demonstrate that the resulting catalogue of galaxy spectra satisfies different types of observational constraints on high-redshift galaxies, and use it as an input to simulate NIRSpec/prism (R ∼ 100) observations. We show that a single 'deep' (∼100 ks) NIRSpec/prism pointing in the HUDF will enable |$\hbox{$\text {S}/\text {N}$}\gt 3$| detections of multiple optical emission lines in ∼30 (∼60) galaxies at |$z$|  ≳ 6 (⁠|$z \sim 4 \, \text {-}\, 6$|⁠) down to |$\hbox{$m_\text {F160W}$}\lesssim 30$| AB mag. Such observations will allow measurements of galaxy star formation rates, ionization parameters, and gas-phase metallicities within factors of 1.5, mass-to-light ratios within a factor of 2, galaxy ages within a factor of 3, and V -band attenuation optical depths with a precision of 0.3. The first observations of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have revolutionized our understanding of the Universe by identifying galaxies at redshift z ≈ 13 (refs. 1-3 ). In addition, the discovery of many luminous galaxies at Cosmic Dawn (z > 10) has suggested that galaxies developed rapidly, in apparent tension with many standard models 4-8 . However, most of these galaxies lack spectroscopic confirmation, so their distances and properties are uncertain. Here we present JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey-Near-Infrared Spectrograph spectroscopic confirmation of two luminous galaxies at z = 14.32 - 0.20 + 0.08 and z = 13.90 ± 0.17. The spectra reveal ultraviolet continua with prominent Lyman-α breaks but no detected emission lines. This discovery proves that luminous galaxies were already in place 300 million years after the Big Bang and are more common than what was expected before JWST. The most distant of the two galaxies is unexpectedly luminous and is spatially resolved with a radius of 260 parsecs. Considering also the very steep ultraviolet slope of the second galaxy, we conclude that both are dominated by stellar continuum emission, showing that the excess of luminous galaxies in the early Universe cannot be entirely explained by accretion onto black holes.
