The objective of the study was to assess the relative competitive ability of canola hybrids in the presence of turnip (Raphanus sativus) and ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in different ratios of plants in the mixture. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse, in a completely randomized design with four replications. Treatments were arranged in ratios of canola against turnip or ryegrass: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100. Competitive analysis of the species was accomplished by means of diagrams usually applied to replacement series and also by the relative competitiveness indices. Fifty days after the emergence of the species, measurements of leaf area and shoot dry mass were performed. There was a competition between canola hybrids and weeds, with reduction for all variables. There was a differential competitive ability among canola hybrids in the presence of turnip and/or ryegrass. Canola hybrid Hyola 433 was more competitive in the presence of turnip than Hyola 61, 76 and 571 CL. Hyola 61, 76, 433 and 571 CL do not differ in terms of competition ability when growing with ryegrass. RESUMOObjetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar a habilidade competitiva relativa de híbridos de canola na presença de biótipos de nabo (Raphanus sativus) e de azevém (Lolium multiflorum), em diferentes proporções de plantas na associação. Os experimentos foram instalados em casa de vegetação, no delineamento experimental completamente casualizado com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em proporções de plantas de canola, nabo e/ou de azevém: 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100. A análise da competitividade das espécies foi efetuada por meio de diagramas aplicados a experimentos substitutivos e também pelos índices de competitividade relativa. Aos 50 dias após a emergência das espécies, efetuou-se a aferição da área foliar e da massa seca da parte aérea das plantas. Ocorreu competição entre os híbridos de canola e as plantas daninhas, provocando reduções das variáveis avaliadas. Foi observada diferenciação de habilidade competitiva entre os híbridos de canola quando na presença do nabo e/ou do azevém. O híbrido de canola Hyola 433 foi mais competitivo na presença do nabo em relação a Hyola 61, Hyola 76 e Hyola 571 CL. Os híbridos de canola Hyola 61, Hyola 76, Hyola 433 e Hyola 571 CL não demonstraram diferenciação na competição ao serem associados com o azevém.

Chagas disease has a long clinically silent period following Trypanosoma cruzi infection and before development of overt clinical pathology; detectable biomarkers of infection and pathogenesis are urgently needed. We tested 22 biomarkers known to be associated with cardiomyopathy to evaluate if a biomarker signature could successfully classify T. cruzi seropositive subjects into clinical Chagas disease stage groups.This cross-sectional retrospective case-control study enrolled T. cruzi seropositive blood donors (BD) who were further characterized as having chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CC-BD) or not (nonCC-BD) and seronegative (SN) control donors; we also included clinically diagnosed Chagas cardiomyopathy patients (CC-P). All subjects underwent a health history questionnaire, medical examination, electro- and echocardiograms (ECG and Echo) and phlebotomy. Biomarkers were measured on blinded samples by luminex bead array and Ortho VITROS.A clear biomarker pattern was observed only in more severe cardiac disease; this pattern included significantly elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α and soluble cardiovascular disease biomarkers CK-MB, troponin, myoglobin, VCAM and NTproBNP while there were lower levels of MPO, PAI-1, and MCP-1. The markers determined to be the most predictive of disease by ROC curve analysis were NTproBNP and T. cruzi PCR status.Although many biomarkers demonstrated increased or decreased concentrations among the clinical forms of Chagas disease, NTproBNP and T. cruzi PCR were the only tests that would independently be of clinical value for disease staging, in concert with ECG, Echo and clinical assessments.

BackgroundThe significance of detection of Trypanosoma cruzi DNA in blood of antibody-positive patients for risk of development of Chagas heart disease is not well established. The objective of this study was to compare detection of T. cruzi DNA with known clinical and laboratory markers of Chagas cardiomyopathy (CC) severity.MethodsThis is a case-control study nested within a retrospective cohort developed in Brazil to understand the natural history of Chagas disease. The study enrolled 499 T. cruzi seropositive blood donors (SP-BD) and 488 frequency matched seronegative control donors (SN-BD) who had donated between 1996 and 2002, and 101 patients with clinically diagnosed CC. In 2008-2010 all enrolled subjects underwent a health questionnaire, medical examination, electrocardiograms and echocardiograms and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses. A blinded panel of three cardiologists adjudicated the outcome of CC. Trypanosoma cruzi kinetoplast minicircle sequences were amplified by real-time PCR using an assay with a sensitivity of one parasite per 20 mL of blood. All testing was performed on coded samples.ResultsRates of PCR detection of T. cruzi DNA were significantly (P = 0.003) higher in CC patients and SP-BD diagnosed with CC (79/105 [75.2 %]) compared with SP-BD without CC (143/279 [51.3%]). The presence of parasitaemia was significantly associated with known markers of disease progression such as QRS and QT interval duration, lower left ventricular ejection fraction, higher left ventricular index mass, and elevated troponin and NTpro-BNP levels.ConclusionTrypanosoma cruzi PCR positivity is associated with presence and severity of cardiomyopathy, suggesting a direct role of parasite persistence in disease pathogenesis.

Developing efficient policy instruments and incentive schemes to promote the uptake of greenhouse gas mitigation measures requires some kind of prioritisation of the mitigation measures. An important consideration in this process is the estimated cost and costefficiency the measures. The high number of reports done in developed countries show a high variability in the country-level cost-effectiveness estimates, and suggest that approaches providing higher granularity at the spatial and farm type could suit better to the purpose of regional policy development. At the same time, there is still a gap in our understanding of economic mitigation potential of agriculture in developing and newly industrialised countries.[br/] To address these questions this report presents three studies. The first is a literature review of the cost-effectiveness estimates of mitigation measures published in the past 15 years, discussing the variability in these estimates. The second study reports on marginal abatement cost curves for beef cattle production in Brazil. Finally, the last report presents the conceptual basis of a tool to assess the financial implications of the mitigation measures to be used in parallel with the FarmAC model, ultimately providing mitigation measure costeffectiveness estimates specific to individual farms. Additionally, it describes the selection of mitigation measures which have been assessed at the farm level in Component 3 of the AnimalChange project.

Eucalyptus cloeziana F. Muell. (Myrtales: Myrtaceae) and the tropical almond Terminalia catappa L. (Myrtales: Combretaceae) are widely cultivated in urban and forest areas of many countries where biological control is the most-preferred method to control insects. Aximopsis sp. (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) is reported for the first time in Brazil in a new group of lepidopteran hosts. Individuals of this species emerged from the pupae of Thyrinteina arnobia arnobia Stoll (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) and Thagona tibialis Walker (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) that developed from larvae defoliating E. cloeziana and T. catappa plants on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa (UFV) in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Aximopsis sp. was identified by comparing it with species of this group as described for the Neotropical region. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Centre de Coopération Internationale en Recherche Agronomique pour le Développement (CIRAD), France. Twenty new pupae each of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) were held individually in test tubes with a drop of honey as food and 3 mated Aximopsis sp. females for 2 d. Aximopsis sp. parasitized 20% of the T. molitor pupae but none of the A. gemmatalis pupae. The duration of the life cycle (egg to adult), parasitism and emergence rates, total individuals emerged from each pupa, sex ratio, length of the body and width of the head capsule, and the longevities of Aximopsis sp. males and females that emerged from parasitized T. molitor pupae were evaluated. The duration of the life cycle of Aximopsis sp. was 14 ± 2 d. An average of 62 ± 5 Aximopsis sp. individuals emerged from each T. molitor pupa, and their sex ratio was 0.96 ± 0.02. The total number of parasitoids that emerged was 248 individuals. Measurements of characters of progeny Aximopsis sp. females (n = 10) and males (n = 5), respectively, were as follows: body length: 3.50 mm (2.40?3.80 mm) and 1.99 mm (1.97?2.02 mm); head capsule width: 0.63 mm (0.58?0.72 mm) and 0.48 mm (0.46?0.51 mm), and longevity: 6 ± 1 d and 4 ± 1 d. These results open prospects for investigations of biological control of pests with this natural enemy.

Aphids cause significant damage to crop plants. Studies regarding predator-prey relationships in fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) crops are important for understanding essential ecological interactions in the context of intercropping and for establishing pest management programs for aphids. This study evaluated the association among Hyadaphis foeniculi (Passerini) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Aphis gossypii Glover (Hemiptera: Aphididae) and Cycloneda sanguinea (L.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) in cotton with coloured fibres, fennel and cotton intercropped with fennel. Association analysis was used to investigate whether the presence or absence of prey and predator species can indicate possible interactions between aphids and ladybugs. Significant associations among both apterous and alate H. foeniculi and C. sanguinea were observed in both the fennel and fennel-cotton intercropping systems. The similarity analysis showed that the presence of aphids and ladybugs in the same system is significantly dependent on the type of crop. A substantial amount of evidence indicates that the presence of the ladybug C. sanguinea, is associated with apterous or alate A. gossypii and H. foeniculi in fennel-cotton intercropping system. Development of new self-lubricant coating systems with control of the lubricous species diffusion have enormous potential to be used in the protection of surfaces in components for machining. In the last years, vanadium rich coatings have been introduced as possible candidates for self-lubrication due to their optimum tribological properties. This work is devoted on the study of V additions on the morphology, structure and on the tribological properties of TiSiN films deposited by HiPIMS in Deep Oscillation Magnetron Sputtering (DOMS) mode. Two different peak powers were used on the deposition of coatings in order to produce films with different morphology. The tribological properties of coatings were evaluated at room temperature against Al2O3 balls on a pin-on-disc apparatus. Increasing of peak power showed to change the cross section morphology of films from columnar type to compact structure. V additions improved the tribological properties of TiSiN coatings. BACKGROUND: Few data are available regarding the use of antithrombotic strategies in coronary artery disease patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) in everyday practice. We sought to describe the prevalence of AF and its antithrombotic management in a contemporary population of patients with stable coronary artery disease.METHODS AND FINDINGS: CLARIFY is an international, prospective, longitudinal registry of outpatients with stable coronary artery disease, defined as prior (≥12 months) myocardial infarction, revascularization procedure, coronary stenosis >50%, or chest pain associated with evidence of myocardial ischemia. Overall, 33,428 patients were screened, of whom 32,954 had data available for analysis at baseline; of these 2,229 (6.7%) had a history of AF. Median (interquartile range) CHA2DS2-VASc score was 4 (3, 5). Oral anticoagulation alone was used in 25.7%, antiplatelet therapy alone in 52.8% (single 41.8%, dual 11.0%), and both in 21.5%. OAC use was independently associated with permanent AF (pCONCLUSIONS: In this contemporary cohort of patients with stable coronary artery disease and AF, most of whom are theoretical candidates for anticoagulation, oral anticoagulants were used in only 47.2%. Half of the patients received antiplatelet therapy alone and one-fifth received both antiplatelets and oral anticoagulants. The fennel aphids, Hyadaphis foeniculi (Passerini) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) attack umbels and may thus,cause to failure of fruit setting and also attack during the phase of seed development. Our research investigated the severity of biomass, seed and essential oil damages related to infestation by the fennel aphid, H. foeniculi in fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Miller) plots and plots of fennel intercropped with cotton with colored fibers. A randomized complete block design was used with four treatments: (1) two rows offennel: three rows of cotton (2F: 3C) (non-treated plot), (2) two rows of fennel: three rows of cotton (2F:3C) (treated plot), (3) fennel (F) (non-treated plot), and (4) fennel (F) (treated-plot), with four replications.The average of the weight of fennel seeds from umbels in the green stage in treated plots (0.19 mg) washigher (21%) than in the non-treated plots (0.15 mg). There was no significant difference in the essential oilextracted from biomass between two cropping systems for both treated and non-treated plots. However,the amount of essential oil extracted from fennel biomass in treated plots was higher in fennel plots thanin fennel in non-treated plots. The average of the essential oil of 1000 fennel seeds from fennel-cotton intercropping system (0.17 ml) was higher (18%) than in the fennel cropping system (0.14 mg). The aphid attack reduced 29% of fennel seed weight. On the other hand, the average amount of essential oil extractedof the non-attacked seeds was two folds higher than of the attacked seeds. Therefore, our results showed that the effects of H. foeniculi on these yield components were smaller in the plots with fennel-cotton intercropping than in fennel plots. We suggest that seed composition responses to H. foeniculi injury should be an important consideration when conducting research to develop IPM systems for this fennel pest. Hyadaphis foeniculi (Passerini) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is a cosmopolitan species and the main pest of fennel in northeastern Brazil. Understanding the relationship between temperature variations and the population growth rates of H. foeniculi is essential to predict the population dynamics of this aphid in the fennel crop. The aim of this study was to measure the effect of constant temperature on the adult prereproductive period and the life table fertility parameters (infinitesimal increase ratio (rm), gross reproduction rate (GRR), net reproduction rate (R0), finite increase ratio (?), generation time (GT), the time required for the population to double in the number of individuals (DT), and the reproduction value (RVx)) of the fennel pest H. foeniculi. The values of lx (survival of nymphs at age x) increased as the temperature rose from 15 to 28°C and fell at 30°C, whereas mx (number of nymphs produced by each nymph of age x) increased from 15 to 25°C and fell at 28 and 30°C. The net reproduction rates (R0) of populations of H. foeniculi increased with temperature and ranged from 1.9 at 15°C to 12.23 at 28°C for each generation. The highest population increase occurred with the apterous aphids at 28°C. The rate of population increase per unit time (rm) (day) ranged from 0.0033 (15°C) to 0.1995 (28°C). The highest values of rm were recorded at temperatures of 28°C and 30°C. The rm values were a good fit to the models tested, with R2 > 0.91 and R2 adj > 0.88. The models tested (Davidson, Sharpe and DeMichele modified by Schoolfield et al., Logan et al., Lamb, and Briere et al.) were very good fits for the rm values observed, with R2 > 0.91 and R2 adj > 0.88. The only exception was the Davidson model. Of the parameters studied, the reproductive capacity was higher in the apterous aphids, with the unique exception of daily fecundity at 28°C, which was higher in the alate aphids of H. foeniculi. Parameters relating to the age-specific fertility table for H. foeniculi were heavily influenced by temperature, with the highest biotic potential and population growth capacity found at 34°C. Therefore, the results obtained in this study could be of practical significance for predicting outbreaks of fennel aphids and improving the management of this aphid in fennel crops.

X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation was used for real-time investigation of the phase evolution of Ni/Ti multilayer thin films during annealing. These multilayers were deposited onto Tie6Ale4V substrates by dc magnetron sputtering from pure Ni and Ti targets. The deposition parameters were adjusted in order to obtain a near equiatomic chemical composition and modulation periods (L) below 25 nm. Along the entire thickness of the films, well-defined structures with alternate Ni- and Ti-rich layers are observed, even for L ¼ 4 nm. In this case, a halo characteristic of an amorphous structure is obtained, while for L of 12 and 25 nm the as-deposited thin films are nanocrystalline being possible to identify the (111) Ni and (002) Ti diffraction peaks. The nanolayered structure vanishes during annealing due to interdiffusion followed by reaction. The reaction between Ni and Ti to produce NiTi in the cubic B2 structure occurs in a short delay of time and within a narrow temperature range. For L of 25, 12 and 4 nm, the reaction temperature is close to 320, 350 and 385 C, respectively. For higher temperatures, in addition to the austenitic phase, the NiTi2 phase is identified. The diffusion of Ti from the substrate and Ni towards the substrate could favour the precipitation of NiTi2.

Sheep production systems in Brazilian caatinga rangelands require supplementation adapted to changes in floristic and chemical composition as dry seasons progress. Meeting sheep nutritional needs in extensive semiarid systems is challenging because of sheep dietary preferences and habits. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the substitutive effect of concentrate supplementation on grazing sheep in the Brazilian caatinga rangeland and its consequences on performance in different seasons. The trial was conducted from March to August 2013 at Embrapa Goat and Sheep in Sobral, Ceará State, Brazil. Thirty-two Brazilian Somali multiparous ewes were submitted to estrus synchronization and controlled breeding. At the start of the trial, ewes averaged 30.45 + 2.60 kg body weight (BW). Ewes were divided into four groups and individually offered 0, 200, 350, or 500 g supplement head
−1 day−1 . Intake prediction and digestibility trials were evaluated at three periods: rainy season (April), transition rainy-dry (June), and dry season (August). Sheep weights were taken every 14 days to measure their performance from late gestation until weaning. Ewe BW and body condition score changes were determined too. Lamb BW changes were also measured every 14 days from birth through weaning. A completely randomized design with split plot arrangement using eight replications was used for intake and digestibility measurements. The differences between supplement offered (0, 200, 350, and 500 g sheep-1) and season (rainy, transition rainy-dry, and dry) were submitted to analyses of variance and multiple means were separated, where differences were detected, using the Tukey's test. During lactation up through weaning, ewes supplemented at 500 g day−1 had greater BW than ewes without supplement. Ewes supplemented with 200 g concentrate head−1 day−1 had 9.1% greater (P ≤ 0.05) BW at weaning and their lambs had 19.7% greater birth and 16.6% heavier wean BW despite lower dry matter intake compared to unsupplemented animals. Supplementation with 200 g concentrate increased carrying capacity by 28.8% during the dry season and by 20.5% during the rainy season. This study confirmed that in the dry season, when quality of rangeland forages decreases, supplementation contributes to greater DMI, improves postpartum and lactation BW recovery of ewes, and contributes to greater lamb birth and wean weights. Moreover, supplementation leads to feed substitution effects that may increase rangeland resilience by mitigating overgrazing. Supplementation with 200 g concentrate can also prevent negative energy balance for grazing animals, improving longer postnatal recovery, longer intervals between parturitions, fewer double and is necessary to ensure a better BW at birth to lambs. A local harmonic (LH) propagator has been derived through an adequate splitting of the Hamiltonian operator. This propagator has been applied to study several quantum systems including a quartic oscillator, a double well potential, and the Morse potential. We have calculated equilibrium and dynamical properties using the transfer matrix path integral method. It has been verified that the LH propagator is significantly more accurate than other propagators proposed by several studies. For the LH propagator, higher order corrections to the Trotter formula lead to an excellent short time approximation. It is suggested that the LH propagator can be of wide interest for path integral studies of quantum systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

470. Effects of roughing, finishing, and aggressive machining conditions on the milling performance of AISI 1045 steel using TiAlN coated inserts

The objective of the present study is to develop a better understanding of machining performance of TiAlN coated tools during face milling of AISI 1045 medium carbon steel. The influences of three different cutting conditions (roughing, finishing, and aggressive conditions) were investigated on cutting forces, chip temperature, tool wear, surface roughness, and chip characteristics. The highest cutting forces were obtained under roughing condition, while, aggressive mode of machining (high values of cutting speed, feed, and depth of cuts) resulted in the highest chip temperature, crater, and flank wear. Material adhesion and coating delamination were predominant under roughing condition. On the other hand, aggressive condition exhibited diffusion wear causing large depth of crater and severe thermal cracks leading to fracture of the cutting edge. Attrition and abrasion wear were also evident. The results of cutting forces, chip temperature, surface roughness, and chip characteristics were correlated with those of tool wear. Results were found to be beneficial in recommending appropriate criteria for choosing different cutting conditions in face milling of AISI 1045 steel using TiAlN coated insert.

471. Tribological properties of TiSiVN coatings: The effect of the counterpart on the wear performance

- Abstract
Self-lubricant coatings are a subject of continual research and improvements. In this research, the tribological performance of TiSiVN coatings produced by increasing V concentration is evaluated. The coatings were deposited by high-power impulse magnetron sputtering in deep oscillation mode, and were tested against three different counterparts (Al2O3, stainless steel and Titanium). The wear mechanisms were identified and the tribolayer was characterized to correlate with different specific wear rates and friction coefficient values. The coatings tested against Al2O3balls displays a polishing type wear mechanism with some material adhered to the film wear track surface. When V is added to the reference film, V-O formed on the wear track has a beneficial influence by decreasing the friction and the wear of the coatings. For stainless steel balls, the wear track displays a mixture of severe abrasion and adhesion wear. Enclosure of hard particles at the softer stainless steel ball is the cause for the severe abrasion of the coating surface. This harsh abrasion removes the V-O from the contact and consequently decreases the efficiency of reducing friction coefficient and wear when compared to the tests against Al2O3balls. For tests conducted against Ti ball, a strong adhesion of the material to the counterpart is observed. The adhered material protects the coatings from wear by giving rise to similar friction coefficient values irrespective of the coatings’ chemical composition.

The objective of this study was to evaluate gas exchange in the massai grass during establishment and regrowth cycles in a greenhouse, using five nitrogen (N) fertilization levels. A completely randomized split-plot design of five nitrogen levels (0; 150; 300; 450 and 600 mg N?dm-3 of soil) was employed with the N levels as plots, and the cycles (establishment, regrowth 1 and 2) as subplots, evaluated with five replicates. We evaluated leaf transpiration (E), leaf temperature (TFOL), leaf photosynthesis rate (A), leaf carbon dioxide concentration (Ci), stomatal conductance (gs), photosynthesis/transpiration ratio (A/E), photosynthesis/conductance ratio (A/gs), chlorophyll relative index (CRI), and nitrogen sufficiency index (NSI). Growth cycles influenced all physiological characteristics, except for NSI. N fertilization levels affected TFOL, A, CRI and NSI variables, whereas for gs, E, Ci, A/E and A/gs it did not occur. A increased from 6.38 to 10.33 μmol?m-2. s-1, at levels 0 and 600 mg N?dm-3 of soil, respectively. Gas exchange in the massai grass was favored by nitrogen fertilization, since the cycles amended these characteristics of the grass.

A doença foliar descrita no Brasil como sendo mancha por phaeosphaeria em milho pode reduzir a produção de grãos em até 60%, quando se utilizam cultivares suscetíveis. O agente causal da doença foi descrito a partir de observações visuais de estruturas reprodutivas sexuadas e assexuadas (pseudotécios e picnídios) encontradas no interior das lesões, e identificado como sendo o fungo Phaeosphaeria maydis, forma imperfeita Phyllosticta sp. No entanto, esse fungo é de difícil isolamento e sua inoculação em plantas de milho, sob condições controladas, não tem apresentado sucesso na reprodução dos sintomas. Isolados obtidos a partir de picnídios e pseudotécios presentes nas lesões foram comparados através do padrão isoenzimático (a e b esterases) e RAPD, visando determinar se esses dois estados são realmente pertencentes ao mesmo agente etiológico. Os resultados obtidos permitiram a separação dos isolados oriundos de picnídios daqueles oriundos de pseudotécios em grupos bem distintos, indicando que essas estruturas pertencem a espécies fúngicas distintas, e não ao estado anamórfico e teleomórfico do mesmo agente, como vem sendo atribuído. A partir da classificação baseada em caracteres morfológicos, o fungo isolado de picnídios foi identificado como Phoma tropica, um fungo oportunista colonizador de lesões preestabelecidas, e não Phyllosticta sp como descrito inicialmente.

ISBN 978-1-479-96790-2, Deterioration on asphalt pavements is affected mainly by traffic and moisture. The traffic on road pavements is responsible by the occurrence of cracks that promotes the pavement deterioration. The moisture decreases the driving comfort and reduces the asphalt-aggregate bond leading to the degradation of the asphalt materials. Additionally, moisture, and especially the moisture inside the asphalt layers, is more difficult to assess than the cracks (visible). Moreover, the diagnosis is difficulted by traffic and the nature of most common investigating techniques. To overcome these difficulties, GPR inspections need to acquire more productive data than layer thickness. In this way, this communication presents several GPR tests carried out on pavement specimens with different densities and moisture content in order to establish different classifiers that will allow the identification of this condition during regular inspections. Soil fertility of the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) is natu-rally poor. Extensive areas of pastures located in the central part of the territory are cultivated with Brachiaria grasses, which are less demanding for soil nutrients and lime than other species (Rao et al. 1998). On the other hand, Panicum maximum cultivars, such as the high yielding Mombaça grass recommended for intensive beef and dairy cattle systems (Euclides et al. 2008), must be seeded with a higher amount of fertilizer, especially phosphorus (P). Consequently, an effort is underway to select P. maximum genotypes with low P demand and high responsiveness.
