This study examines the relationship between thermal coefficient of expansion and microleakage. Six restorative materials with varying coefficients of thermal expansion were thermocycled in basic fuschin dye and compared for relative microleakage. The use of dental restorative materials with low coefficients of thermal expansion such as glass ionomer can control microleakage.

A new method is described for the quantification of leakage between etched enamel and restorative resin. A significant correlation was demonstrated between the plane of enamel section prior to etching and subsequent leakage. It is suggested that these findings will be of value in the design of cavities for use with the acid-etch technique; when possible, enamel should be prepared to expose prisms transversely prior to etching and bonding.

In this laboratory study, the effect of retention grooves in the proximal portion of class II cavities on the marginal microleakage using light-cured composite resin was examined. The retention grooves were placed at the axio-facial and axio-lingual line angles and in the gingival floor of the cavities. The teeth were restored with Herculite composite resin with etching and dentine bonding and polymerized in two different ways: (i) a single mass of restorative material was polymerized all at once; and (ii) incrementally placed amounts of restorative material were each polymerized separately until the cavity was completely filled. Marginal microleakage was evaluated by the degree of dye penetration at the gingival margin of the restorations after suitable thermocycling procedures. It was concluded that marginal microleakage was significantly reduced when the composite resin was placed and polymerized incrementally, and that no advantage was gained from retention grooves with this incremental technique. However, when polymerizing in one single mass of material, retention grooves were found to be necessary in order to reduce marginal microleakage at the gingival wall.

This study addresses the question of whether conservative methods of restoration may be applied efficaciously in permanent posterior teeth with proximal lesions and intact occlusal sealants. It evaluates the effect of in vivo experimental conditions on micro-leakage, using primary molars in this study, for information applicable to permanent molars.

An in vitro study to determine the usefulness of dye-penetration studies was conducted. In part I, teeth were prepared through the foramen and then left open, either apically, coronally, or at both ends. In all cases, the dye did not penetrate the full length of the canal. The only exception was when both ends were left open and the teeth were placed into the dye in an upright position. In part II, a measurable defect in a canal filling the length of the canal was created and left open apically. When the tooth was immersed in dye, the penetration was incomplete. When the air was removed by vacuum pump prior to placement in the dye, the penetration was total. The validity of dye studies that do not consider entrapped air is open to question.

Forty-six intact extracted human anterior teeth were treated endodontically with laterally condensed gutta-percha and sealer. The teeth were restored with a base of either zinc phosphate or temporary stopping and a permanent restoration of either acid etched composite resin with GLUMA as the dentin bonding agent or with Ketac-Fil glass ionomer. The teeth were thermocycled, coated with nail varnish (except for the access), immersed in silver nitrate, developed, and sectioned longitudinally. The linear dye penetration was measured. All restorations permitted leakage into the base. All groups had specimens which leaked into the gutta-percha. There was a tendency for the glass ionomer/zinc phosphate group to leak least, but there were no statistically significant differences among the groups.

Radioactive 14C sucrose was found to be an ideal marker for microleakage because it did not penetrate tooth tissue, dental cement, or mounting resin. The main finding is that the adhesive cements--the glass-ionomer and polycarboxylate--are significantly more effective at preventing microleakage than are the traditional phosphate cements--silicate and zinc phosphate. The differences can be as high as two orders of magnitude. The adhesive cements provide almost perfect and reliable seals. By contrast, the nonadhesive cements are erratic sealants with most of the restorations leaking.

This in vitro investigation evaluated the marginal seal of an injection-molded ceramic crown system used in combination with three adhesive luting systems. One of these systems was a glass-ionomer cement and the other two were based on composite resin materials. One of the latter materials is claimed by the manufacturer to bond to tooth structure and also to porcelain. The final luting material was used in conjunction with a commercially available porcelain bonding system and specific dentin bonding pretreatments. Following thermocycling, the marginal seal of the crowns was tested by use of a chemical marker intrusion technique. The extent of leakage along the sectioned crown/luting agent/tooth structure interfaces was recorded by using digital imaging microscopy. Minimal microleakage was demonstrated with the composite luting cement used in association with specific porcelain and dentin bonding pretreatments.

This study evaluated the microleakage of various restorative materials placed in root surfaces. A minimum of 20 freshly extracted single-rooted teeth were used for each combination of restorative materials. Four preparations were made on the root surface and each restored with a different material. After thermocycling in dye, the root was cut transversely in several sections through the restoration, and microscopically examined to record the microleakage at the interface between restorative materials and tooth. Results indicated that fewer composite resin specimens allowed microleakage into dentin as compared with either amalgam or glass ionomer materials.
