Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection incidence in HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU) and HIV-unexposed (HU) infants in a Spanish cohort. We conducted a retrospective study in 5 hospitals in Madrid (Spain). Infants ≤ 90 days of life with a GBS infection were included from January 2008 to December 2017. Incidence of GBS infection in HEU and HU children was compared. HEU infants presented a sevenfold greater risk of GBS infection and a 29-fold greater risk of GBS meningitis compared to HU, with statistical significance. Early-onset infection was tenfold more frequent in HEU children, with statistical significance, and late-onset infection was almost fivefold more frequent in the HUE infants' group, without statistical significance. Conclusion: HEU infants presented an increased risk of GBS sepsis and meningitis. One in each 500 HEU infants of our cohort had a central nervous system infection and 1 in each 200, a GBS infection. Although etiological causes are not well understood, this should be taken into account by physicians when attending this population. What is Known: • HIV-exposed uninfected infants are at higher risk of severe infections. • An increased susceptibility of these infants to group B Streptococcus infections has been described in low- and high-income countries, including a higher risk of meningitis in a South African cohort. What is New: • Group B Streptococcal meningitis is more frequent in HIV-exposed uninfected infants also in high-income countries. • Physicians should be aware of this increased risk when attending these infants. Abstract

The accessory olfactory bulb (AOB) is the first integrative center of the vomeronasal system (VNS), and the general macroscopic, microscopic, and neurochemical organizational patterns of the AOB differ fundamentally among species. Therefore, the low degree of differentiation observed for the dog AOB is surprising. As the artificial selection pressure exerted on domestic dogs has been suggested to play a key role in the involution of the dog VNS, a wild canid, such as the fox, represents a useful model for studying the hypothetical effects of domestication on the AOB morphology.A comprehensive histological, lectin-histochemical, and immunohistochemical study of the fox AOB was performed. Anti-Gαo and anti-Gαi2 antibodies were particularly useful, as they label the transduction cascade of the vomeronasal receptor types 1 (V1R) and 2 (V2R), respectively. Other employed antibodies included those against proteins such as microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP-2), tubulin, glial fibrillary acidic protein, growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43), olfactory marker protein (OMP), calbindin, and calretinin.The cytoarchitecture of the fox AOB showed a clear lamination, with neatly differentiated layers; a highly developed glomerular layer, rich in periglomerular cells; and large inner cell and granular layers. The immunolabeling of Gαi2, OMP, and GAP-43 delineated the outer layers, whereas Gαo and MAP-2 immunolabeling defined the inner layers. MAP-2 characterized the somas of AOB principal cells and their dendritic trees. Anti-calbindin and anti-calretinin antibodies discriminated neural subpopulations in both the mitral-plexiform layer and the granular cell layer, and the lectin Ulex europeus agglutinin I (UEA-I) showed selectivity for the AOB and the vomeronasal nerves.The fox AOB presents unique characteristics and a higher degree of morphological development compared with the dog AOB. The comparatively complex neural basis for semiochemical information processing in the fox compared with that observed in dogs suggests loss of AOB anatomical complexity during the evolutionary history of dogs and opens a new avenue of research for studying the effects of domestication on brain structures.

460. Hybrid ionic plastic crystals in the race for enhanced low-pressure barocaloric materials

Abstract

In this work, we introduce a new family of barocaloric hybrid organic-inorganic compounds with colossal barocaloric effects. The here reported hybrid materials, [(CH3)3(CH2Cl)N]FeCl4 and [(CH3)3S]FeCl4, exhibit a molecular structure composed by discrete inorganic anions and organic cations with weak elestrostatic interactions. Our calorimetric studies reveal colossal barocaloric effects of similar magnitude than organic plastic crystals (ΔS > 100 J K-1 kg-1) near room temperature and under smaller pressures (p ≤ 1000 bar), which leads to higher barocaloric strengths. Furthermore, these materials exhibit densities similar to barocaloric hybrid perovskites enhancing the volumetric barocaloric effects (ΔS ~ 200 J K-1 l-1), which could provide more compact cooling devices. Therefore, the colossal values of the mass and volumetric barocaloric effects and large barocaloric strength, in addition to the low working pressure and near-room-temperature operation, offer a new family of compounds to further explore in the search for improved barocaloric materials.

Abstract

Il s’agit de montrer ici comment la progressive apparition au détour des XIIIe et XIVe siècles de la notion de bien public prôné par les monarques successifs obligea la noblesse à réélaborer son discours. La conflictuelle conformation des relations entre les Villes, la noblesse et la couronne supposa une remise en question profonde du positionnement de l’Estado militaire au sein de la monarchie. La pression fiscale en particulier fut à l’origine du glissement sémantique que l’on observe dans les discours nobiliaires. L’auteure présente ici un processus dont l’une des issues sera la domestication de la noblesse de cour par les Rois Catholiques, mais qui induit aussi déjà l’absolutisme relatif des Habsbourgs d’Espagne.

Abstract

[EN] This article presents a general scoop of the culture of the Castilian nobility during the Middle Ages and of the main common characteristics to other Hispanic territories and to the test of Western Europe. It is the reason why we study two basic aspects: on the one hand, the people in charge of education and the spaces specially meant for it and, on the other hand, the knowledge and techniques that the young noble gentlemen had to learn. In the first one, appears the character of the tutor, at least in the great families The weight of the intellectual tasks was probably reserved to a priest, as it was the use in the monarchy. The roya1 court, the seigniorial residence and the ecclesiastical and council schools accomplished also that function rowards the vassals, servants and urban elites. The documental news about the knowledge of specific characters, the and didactic referents and the first records of patronage stress the interest intellectual training, though the priority given to riding, was evaluated Castilian Low Middle Ages, especially during the XVth century.
