The kinetics of the reaction of N(3) (+) with O(2) has been studied from 120 to 1400 K using both a selected ion flow tube and high-temperature flowing afterglow. The rate constant decreases from 120 K to approximately 1200 K and then increases slightly up to the maximum temperature studied, 1400 K. The rate constant compares well to most of the previous measurements in the overlapping temperature range. Comparing the results to drift tube data shows that there is not a large difference between increasing the translational energy available for reaction and increasing the internal energy of the reactants over much of the range, i.e., all types of energies drive the reactivity equally. The reaction produces both NO(+) and NO(2) (+), the latter of which is shown to be the higher energy NOO(+) linear isomer. The ratio of NOO(+) to NO(+) decreases from a value of over 2 at 120 K to less than 0.01 at 1400 K because of dissociation of NOO(+) at the higher temperatures. This ratio decreases exponentially with increasing temperature. High-level theoretical calculations have also been performed to compliment the data. Calculations using multi-reference configuration interaction theory at the MRCISD(Q)/cc-pVTZ level of theory show that singlet NOO(+) is linear and is 4.5 eV higher in energy than ONO(+). A barrier of 0.9 eV prevents dissociation into NO(+) and O((1)D); however, a crossing to a triplet surface connects to NO(+) and O((3)P) products. A singlet and a triplet potential energy surface leading to products have been determined using coupled cluster theory at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ level on structures optimized at the Becke3-Lee, Yang, and Parr (B3LYP)/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The experimental results and reaction mechanism are evaluated using these surfaces.

Forty-four marsupials, 77 rodents and 161 ticks were captured in an Atlantic Forest Reserve in Cotia county, State of São Paulo, where human cases of Lyme disease (LD) simile were reported. Twenty-one borrelia-like spirochete isolates were recovered from the mammals' blood and rodent livers or spleens, and triturated ticks inoculated into BSK II medium. Our results suggest that the reservoirs and ticks collected may harbor borrelia-like spirochetes, some of which have an antigenic similarity with the unknown causative agent of LD simile in Brazil, and/or with North American Borrelia burgdorferi s. s.

The life cycle of Ixodes (Ixodes) loricatus Neumann, reared in the laboratory, is described. Engorged females collected from opossums trapped in the states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Brazil, which were used to start the laboratory colonies, were designated as BMG and CSP, respectively. Larval and nymphal ticks from both colonies fed separately on Rattus norvergicus Berkenhout or Calomys callosus Rengger, whereas Didelphis marsupialis L and Didelphis albiventris Lund were used as hosts for BMG and CSP adults, respectively. Biological and developmental data obtained from ticks of both the BMG and CSP colonies that were reared separately for two consecutive generations were compared. The percentage of fed or molted ticks reared on C. callosus was higher than that recorded for ticks fed on R. norvergicus in the majority of the observations. Despite significant differences among several of the biological parameters, the pattern of the life cycles of the two tick colonies was similar. Results indicated that the mean life cycle duration of I. (I.) loricatus was approximately 7 mo from parental oviposition to the occurrence of F1 eggs, regardless of geographic origin or host species.

External electrical stimulation is a simple, noninvasive and inexpensive treatment modality, which is useful in the treatment of stress- and/or idiopathic urge incontinence. The mode of action arises from excitation of the pudendal nerves leading to direct and reflex contraction of pelvic floor muscles and a reflex inhibition of the detrusor. Treatment can be applied either as a weak long-term stimulation at home, as a short-term maximal stimulation in clinic, hospital or home treatment. Approximately 50%-75% of incontinent patients are either cured or improved and the adverse effects are sparse. Electrostimulation seems to be valuable in the treatment of incontinence.

Narcissus, a composite of self-images of a cryogenically cooled detector array, is an effect peculiar to scanning thermal imaging systems. It occurs when the detectors sense variations in the amount of background radiation reaching them via reflections from lens surfaces. Paraxial surface-contribution formulas derived from Lagrange invariants, coupled with the system spectral response, determine narcissus in terms of its equivalent scene temperature difference (NARCDeltaT). The equations give the intensity and size of the narcissus ghost in terms of paraxial ray data at the contributing surfaces and the system f/No. This Gaussian formulation has sufficient radiometric accuracy to make extensive ray tracing unnecessary.

Dithizone, a zinc chelating agent, is known to selectively stain the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. In the present study, we have used this stain to aid the identification of islets in material obtained by collagenase digestion of human pancreas. Islets were shown to rapidly and reversibly stain red on incubation with dithizone solution. Tissue selected on the basis of dithizone staining was shown to contain insulin-positive cells and to accumulate insulin in the medium during a subsequent period in tissue culture. Experiments with rat islets indicated that the dithizone treatment had no effect on insulin release in tissue culture, on acute responses to stimulatory glucose concentrations or on the insulin content of cells. These results suggest that dithizone staining can assist in the identification of islets from the human pancreas and may prove to be a useful tool in developing techniques for the large scale isolation of functionally intact human islets.
