Recent years have seen remarkable results in high-resolution imaging and testing of the human visual system. The ability to obtain in vivo images of the human fundus on the micrometer scale will allow for much earlier diagnosis and treatment of a range of retina diseases. These advances have been made possible in part through the use of adaptive optics (AO). In order to utilize the full numerical aperture and, hence, maximize the resolution of the eye, it is necessary to provide a means of correcting all of the ocular aberrations. The concept of AO has been used successfully to overcome this difficulty. A key component of such a system is an optical element that can be deformed to provide high-order correction of these aberrations. Existing AO systems make use of deformable mirrors that were developed for large ground-based telescopes. In a drive to reduce their size and cost, fabrication of this element using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has been actively pursued. This paper explains the challenges in high-resolution imaging of the human eye and details how MEMS technology has been used to further research in this area. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Molybdenum-containing enzymes catalyse basic reactions in the nitrogen, sulphur and carbon metabolism. Mo-enzymes contain at their catalytic sites an organometallic structure termed the molybdenum cofactor or Moco. In higher plants, Moco is incorporated into the apoproteins of four enzymes: nitrate reductase (EC 1.6.6.1-3; NR), xanthine dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.204; XDH), aldehyde oxidase (EC 1.2.3.1; AO) and sulphite oxidase (EC1.8.3.1; SO). Molybdoenzymes in plants are key enzymes in nitrate assimilation, purine metabolism, hormone biosynthesis, and most probably in sulphite detoxification. They are considered to be involved in stress acclimation processes and, therefore, elucidation of the mechanisms of their response to environmental stress conditions is of agricultural importance for the improvement of plant stress tolerance. Here we would like to give a brief functional and biochemical characteristic of the four plant molybdoenzymes and to focus mainly on their sensitivity to environmental stress factors. : ObjectivesWe compared the effects of perindopril and losartan on endothelium-dependent coronary vasomotor and fibrinolytic function.: BackgroundThe renin-angiotensin system regulates the vascular fibrinolytic balance. However, the effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II type 1 receptor antagonists on coronary fibrinolytic function have not been compared in hypertensive patients.: MethodsForty-five patients with hypertension were randomly assigned to three groups: 16 patients were treated with perindopril (4 mg/day) for four weeks; 15 were treated with losartan (50 mg/day) for four weeks; and 14 were not treated with either perindopril or losartan (control group). Graded doses of bradykinin (BK) (0.2, 0.6, and 2.0 μg/min) were administered into the left coronary artery. Coronary blood flow (CBF) was evaluated by Doppler flow velocity measurement.: ResultsBradykinin induced dose-dependent increases in CBF in all groups. The increases in CBF induced by BK in the perindopril and losartan groups were significantly greater than those in the control group. Net coronary tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) release was enhanced by BK in all groups, and the increase in the perindopril group was greater than that in the losartan and control groups. Bradykinin did not alter plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 levels in any of the groups.: ConclusionsPerindopril and losartan similarly augment BK-induced coronary vasodilation. : ObjectivesThe aim of this study was to determine whether in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) a distensibility (Dist) reduction: 1) similarly occurs in different arteries; 2) is related to CHF severity; and 3) is reversible with treatment.: BackgroundSeveral studies suggest that CHF is accompanied by a reduced arterial Dist.: MethodsWe measured diameter in radial artery, carotid artery (CA) and abdominal aorta (AO) by echotracking. Distensibility was obtained by relating it to blood pressure. Data were collected in 30 patients with CHF (New York Heart Association functional class I to III) under standard treatment with diuretic, digitalis and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor in whom CHF severity was assessed by maximum oxygen consumption (Vo2max) percentage and in 30 age- and gender-matched controls. Patients with CHF were then randomized to maintain standard treatment (n = 10), double the ACE inhibitor dose (n = 10) or add an angiotensin II antagonist (n = 10) and restudied after two months.: ResultsDistensibility was markedly reduced in the CHF group in all three vessels (p < 0.01), CA and AO Dist being related to CHF severity (p < 0.05). After two months, Dist did not change in the group maintained under standard treatment, but it increased significantly (p < 0.05) and similarly when the ACE inhibitor dose was doubled or an angiotensin II antagonist was added.: ConclusionsCongestive heart failure is characterized by a reduction of Dist of large-elastic and middle-sized muscular arteries. The reduction of large-elastic artery Dist is related to the CHF severity. : ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of intracoronary hyperoxemic reperfusion after primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction (MI).: BackgroundHyperoxemic therapy with aqueous oxygen (AO) attenuates reperfusion injury and preserves left ventricular (LV) function in experimental models of MI.: MethodsIn a multi-center study of patients with acute MI undergoing primary angioplasty (PTCA), hyperoxemic blood (pO2: 600 to 800 mm Hg) was infused into the infarct-related artery for 60 to 90 min after intervention. The primary end points were clinical, electrical and hemodynamic stability during hyperoxemic reperfusion and in-hospital major adverse cardiac events. Global and regional LV function was evaluated by serial echocardiography after PTCA, after AO infusion, at 24 h and at one and three months.: ResultsTwenty-nine patients were enrolled (mean age: 58.9 ± 12.6 years). Hyperoxemic reperfusion was performed successfully in all cases (mean infusion time: 80.8 ± 18.2 min; mean coronary perfusate pO2: 631 ± 235 mm Hg). There were no adverse events during hyperoxemic reperfusion or the in-hospital period. Compared with baseline, a significant improvement in global wall motion score index was observed at 24 h (1.68 ± 0.24 vs. 1.48 ± 0.24, p < 0.001) with a trend toward an increase in ejection fraction (48.6 ± 7.3% vs. 51.8 ± 6.8%, p = 0.08). Progressive improvement in LV function was observed at one and three months, primarily due to recovery of infarct zone function.: ConclusionsIntracoronary hyperoxemic reperfusion is safe and well tolerated after primary PTCA. In recent years increasing attention has been given to apoptosis for its role in pathologic, organogenetic and homeostatic phenomena. Acridine orange (AO), Hoechst 33342 (HO) and propidium iodide (PI) are among the most used fluorescent dyes used to analyse cell culture viability. In fact, they respectively show specificity for living, apoptotic and late apoptosis/necrosis states. We explored whether HO, AO and PI can be used on prefixed monolayers of three commonly used cell lines. Here we mainly describe the metachromatic effects obtained by fluorescence microscopy with double and triple dye combinations. Furthermore, we propose an easy staining method in which a balanced sequential treatment with HO, AO and PI allows identification of different viability states onto fixed cells by using a long-pass FITC filter. This method extends the spectrum of suitable applications for these dyes in fluorescence viability detection onto previously fixed (prefixed) samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drought is one of the most important environmental disasters. Assessment of the effects of oceanic atmospheric oscillations upon regional drought behavior has valuable implications for water resources management, especially for arid regions. This study aims to explore the climate drivers of drought conditions in Xinjiang, an arid region in mid-latitude Asia. Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) was adopted to describe drought variation over Xinjiang during the period of 1951–2020. Teleconnection effects of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), and Arctic Oscillation (AO) on Xinjiang drought variability were analyzed based on cross-correlation and stepwise regression methods. Partial correlation analysis was applied to discuss the responding mechanism of drought behavior to teleconnection signals from the perspective of regional climate factors. Findings from this study indicate that synchronous ENSO featured by Nino3.4 index has a significant positive correlation with Xinjiang dry/wet variation. El Niño may favor to wetness in Xinjiang, while La Niña may exacerbate drought effect in the region. ENSO mainly acts on the short-term drought variability in Xinjiang region. The synchronous PDO makes a leading contribution on drought variation at 12-month time scale among the four signals. The significant positive correlation between PDO and drought variation suggests that positive-phase (negative-phase) PDO may contribute to wetting (drying) epochs in Xinjiang region. AMO indicates a significant negative correlation with Xinjiang drought on both synchronous and asynchronous modes. Positive (negative) phase AMO may favor to dry (wet) effects in Xinjiang. AMO appears a predominant teleconnection effect on long-term drought variability, and fluctuates a persistent anti-phase mode with Xinjiang dry/wet variability since the mid-1980s. AO mainly acts on short-term drought fluctuations, indicating a significant negative correlation with drought behavior within a 12-month moving time window. Positive (negative) phase AO may contribute to dry (wet) epochs over Xinjiang. ENSO and PDO affect short-term dry/wet variation mainly through the teleconnection effect on precipitation variability. AMO mainly influences Xinjiang drought evolution by acting on regional temperature variation. The influence of internal atmospheric variability on regional climate behavior has a delayed effect, and drought variability is affected by precursor pattern of teleconnection likewise. Purpose: X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS), caused by mutations in the RS 1 gene, is an X-linked recessive inherited disease that typically involves both eyes in the first 2 decades of life. Recently, the phenotype heterogeneity of this condition has drawn increasing attention. We reported various phenotypes caused by RS1 gene mutations in eleven patients from ten Chinese families. Methods: Data on the medical history of the patients from ten Han families of central China were collected. Ophthalmic examinations including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photography, ultra-wide-angle sweep source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), and electroretinography (ERG) were performed. Adaptive optics (AO) images were acquired to evaluate the cone photoreceptor mosaic when applicable. Venous blood of the probands and their family members was collected, and DNA was subjected to sequencing based on next-generation sequencing with a custom-designed targeted gene panel PS400 for inherited retinal diseases. Validation was performed by Sanger sequencing and cosegregation. Pathogenicity was determined in accordance with the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines. Results: Ten RS1 mutations, including eight missense mutations and two terminator mutations, were identified in 10 XLRS families. c.657C > A ( p .C219X) was a novel mutation in this cohort. These patients showed a variety of clinical phenotypes, including fovea schisis, bullous retinoschisis, and macular or peripheral atrophy. Fifteen eyes of eight patients exhibited macular retinoschisis, and twelve eyes of seven patients exhibited peripheral retinoschisis. In addition, three patients showed asymmetrical fundus manifestations. Of importance, three patients without macular retinoschisis were misdiagnosed until genetic testing results were obtained. AO showed a decrease in cone density and loss of regularity in the cystic schisis macular of XLRS. Furthermore, the BCVA was associated with the photoreceptor inner segment and outer segment (IS/OS) thickness. Conclusion: With complicated clinical manifestations, a considerable portion of XLRS patients may present various phenotypes. It should be noted that asymmetry in fundus appearance in both eyes could lead to misdiagnosis easily. Thus, genetic testing is crucial for making a final diagnosis in those patients who are suspected of having amblyopia, bilateral or unilateral macular atrophy, or conditions presenting an asymmetric fundus appearance. Dynamic stability of the knee and weakness of the extensor muscles are considered to be the most important functional limitations after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, probably due to changes at the central (cortical and corticospinal) level of motor control rather than at the peripheral level. Despite general technological advances, fewer contraindicative surgical procedures, and extensive postoperative rehabilitation, up to 65% of patients fail to return to their preinjury level of sports, and only half were able to return to competitive sport. Later, it becomes clear that current rehabilitation after knee surgery is not sufficient to address the functional limitations after ACL reconstruction even years after surgery. Therefore, new therapeutic tools targeting the central neural system, i.e., the higher centers of motor control, should be investigated and integrated into current rehabilitation practice. To improve motor performance when overt movement cannot be fully performed (e.g., due to pain, impaired motor control, and/or joint immobilization), several techniques have been developed to increase physical and mental activation without the need to perform overt movements. Among the most popular cognitive techniques used to increase physical performance are motor imagery and action observation practices. With the aggravation of the ocean–atmosphere cycle anomaly, understanding the potential teleconnections between climate indices and drought/flood conditions can help us know natural hazards more comprehensively to better cope with them. This study aims at exploring the spatiotemporal patterns of drought and its multi-scale relations with typical climate indices in the Huaihe River Basin. First, the spatial patterns were identified based on the seasonal Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI)-3 during 1956–2020 by means of the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF). The two leading sub-regions of spring and winter droughts were determined. Then, we extracted the periodicity of spring and winter SPI-3 series and the corresponding seasonal climate indices (Arctic Oscillation (AO), Bivariate El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)Timeseries (BEST), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Niño3, and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI)) and the sunspot number by using the Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT). We further explored the teleconnections between spring drought, winter drought, and climate indices and the sunspot number by using Cross Wavelet Transform (XWT) and Wavelet Coherence (WTC) analyses. The results show that there are in-phase multi-scale relations between spring/winter PC1 and AO, BEST, and Niño3, of which the climate indices lead spring PC1 by 1.5–2 years and the climate indices lag winter PC1 by 1.5–3 years. Anti-phase relations between spring PCs and SOI and the sunspot number were observed. NAO mainly affects the interdecadal variation in spring drought, while AO and Niño3 focus on the interannual variation. In addition, Niño3 and SOI are more related to the winter drought on interdecadal scales. Moreover, there is a positive correlation between the monthly average precipitation/temperature and Niño3 with a lag of 3 months. The results are beneficial for improving the accuracy of drought prediction, considering taking NAO, AO, and Niño3 as predictors for spring drought and Niño3 and SOI for winter drought.
