Micro-X is a sounding rocket-borne instrument that uses a microcalorimeter array to perform high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. This instrument flew for the first time on July 22nd, 2018 from the White Sands Missile Range, USA. This flight marks the first successful operation of a Transition-Edge Sensor array and its time division multiplexing read-out system in space. This launch was dedicated to the observation of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. A failure in the attitude control system prevented the rocket from pointing and led to no time on target. The on-board calibration source provided X-rays in flight, and it is used to compare detector performance during pre-flight integration, flight, and after the successful post-flight recovery. The Micro-X sounding rocket flew for the first time on July 22, 2018, becoming the first program to fly Transition-Edge Sensors and multiplexing SQUID readout electronics in space. While a rocket pointing failure led to no time on-target, the success of the flight systems was demonstrated. The successful flight operation of the instrument puts the program in a position to modify the payload for indirect galactic dark matter searches. The payload modifications are motivated by the science requirements of this observation. Micro-X can achieve world-leading sensitivity in the keV regime with a single flight. Dark matter sensitivity projections have been updated to include recent observations and the expected sensitivity of Micro-X to these observed fluxes. Precise measurements of the S-stars orbiting SgrA* have set strong constraints on the nature of the compact object at the centre of the Milky Way. The presence of a black hole in that region is well established, but its neighboring environment is still an open debate. In that respect, the existence of dark matter in that central region may be detectable due to its strong signatures on the orbits of stars: the main effect is a Newtonian precession which will affect the overall pericentre shift of S2, the latter being a target measurement of the GRAVITY instrument. The exact nature of this dark matter (e.g., stellar dark remnants or diffuse dark matter) is unknown. This article assumes it to be an scalar field of toroidal distribution, associated with ultra-light dark matter particles, surrounding the Kerr black hole. Such a field is a form of "hair" expected in the context of superradiance, a mechanism that extracts rotational energy from the black hole. Orbital signatures for the S2 star are computed and shown to be detectable by GRAVITY. We introduce a novel and concise methodology to detect the parity of atomic and molecular orbitals based on photoelectron holography, which is more general than the existing schemes. It fully accounts for the Coulomb distortions of electron trajectories, does not require sculpted fields to retrieve phase information and, in principle, is applicable to a broad range of electron momenta. By comparatively measuring the differential photoelectron spectra from strong-field ionization of N$_{2}$ molecules and their companion atoms of Ar, some photoelectron holography patterns are found to be dephased for both targets. This is well reproduced by the full-dimensional time-dependent Schr\"{o}dinger equation and the Coulomb quantum-orbit strong-field approximation (CQSFA) simulation. Using the CQSFA, we trace back our observations to different parities of the 3$p$ orbital of Ar and the highest-occupied molecular orbital of N$_{2}$ via interfering Coulomb-distorted quantum orbits carrying different initial phases. This method could in principle be used to extract bound-state phases from any holographic structure, with a wide range of potential applications in recollision physics and spectroscopy.

We analyze the consolidation of freshly deposited cohesive and non-cohesive sediment by means of particle-resolved direct Navier-Stokes simulations based on the Immersed Boundary Method. The computational model is parameterized by material properties and does not involve any arbitrary calibrations. We obtain the stress balance of the fluid-particle mixture from first principles and link it to the classical effective stress concept. The detailed datasets obtained from our simulations allow us to evaluate all terms of the derived stress balance. We compare the settling of cohesive sediment to its non-cohesive counterpart, which corresponds to the settling of the individual primary particles. A detailed understanding of how the activity of a galactic nucleus regulates the growth of its host is still missing. To understand the activity and the types of accretion of supermassive black holes in different hosts, it is essential to study radio-optical properties of a large sample of extragalactic sources. In particular, we aim at studying the radio spectral index trends across the optical emission line diagnostic diagrams to search for potential (anti)correlations. To this goal, we combine flux densities from the radio FIRST survey at $1.4\,{\rm GHz}$ (with the flux density range $10\,{\rm mJy} \leq F_{1.4} \leq 1000\,{\rm mJy}$) for 209 SDSS sources at intermediate redshift $(0.04\leq z \leq 0.4)$ with the Effelsberg radiotelescope measurements at $4.85\,{\rm GHz}$ and $10.45\,{\rm GHz}$. The information about the optical emission-line ratios is obtained from the SDSS-DR7 catalogue. Using the Effelsberg data, we were able to infer the two-point radio spectral index distributions for star-forming galaxies, composite galaxies (with a combined contribution to the line emission from the star-formation and AGN activity), Seyferts, and low ionization narrow emission region (LINER) galaxies. While studying the distribution of steep, flat, and inverted sources across optical diagnostic diagrams, we found three distinct classes of radio emitters for our sample: (i) sources with steep radio index, high ionization ratio and high radio loudness, (ii) sources with flat radio index, lower ionization ratio and intermediate radio loudness, (iii) sources with inverted radio index, low ionization ratio and low radio loudness. The classes (i), (ii), (iii) cluster mainly along the transition from Seyfert to LINER sources in the BPT diagram. Context. In the near- to mid-infrared wavelength domain, bright continuum sources in the central parsec of the Galactic center (GC) are subject to foreground absorption. These sources therefore represent ideal probes of the intervening material that is responsible for the absorption along the line of sight. Aims. Our aim is to shed light on the location and physics of the absorbing clouds. We try to find out which of the gaseous absorbing materials is intimately associated with the GC and which one is associated with clouds at a much larger distance. Methods. We used the capabilities of CRIRES spectrograph located at ESO Very Large Telescope in Chile to obtain absorption spectra of individual lines at a high spectral resolution of R=65000, that is, 5 km/s. We observed the 12CO R(0), P(1), P(2), P(3), P(4), P(5), P(6), P(7) and P(9) transition lines, applied standard data reduction, and compared the results with literature data. Results. We present the results of CRIRES observations of 13 infrared sources located in the central parsec of the Galaxy. The data provide direct evidence for a complex structure of the interstellar medium along the line of sight and in the close environment of the central sources. In particular we find four cold foreground clouds at radial velocities vLS R of the order of -145,-85, -60, and -40+-15 km/s that show absorption in the lower transition lines from R(0) to P(2) and in all the observed spectra.We also find in all sources an absorption in velocity range of 50-60 km/s, possibly associated with the so-called 50 km/s cloud and suggesting an extension of this cloud in front of the GC. Finally, we detect individual absorption lines that are probably associated with material much closer to the center and with the sources themselves, suggesting the presence of cold gas in the local region., Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, A&A in press

We report ALMA observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert galaxy NGC613, at a spatial resolution of 17pc, as part of our NUclei of GAlaxies sample. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central kpc, and to probe nuclear fueling and feedback phenomena. The morphology of CO(3-2) line emission reveals a 2-arm trailing nuclear spiral at $r\lesssim$100pc and a circumnuclear ring at ~350pc radius, that is coincident with the star-forming ring seen in the optical images. The molecular gas in the galaxy disk is in a remarkably regular rotation, however, the kinematics in the nuclear region is very skewed. The nuclear spectrum of CO and dense gas tracers HCN(4-3), HCO+(4-3), and CS(7-6) show broad wings up to $\pm$300km/s, associated with a molecular outflow emanating from the nucleus (r~25pc). We derive a molecular outflow mass $M_{out}$=2x10$^6$M$_\odot$ and a mass outflow rate of $\dot{M}_{out}=$27$\rm M_\odot yr^{-1}$. The molecular outflow energetics exceed the values predicted by AGN feedback models: the kinetic power of the outflow corresponds to 20%L_AGN and the momentum rate is $\dot{M}_{out}v\sim400L_{AGN}/c$. The outflow is mainly boosted by the AGN through entrainment by the radio jet, but given the weak nuclear activity of NGC613, we might be witnessing a fossil outflow, resulted from a strong past AGN that now has already faded. The nuclear trailing spiral observed in CO emission is inside the ILR ring of the bar. We compute the gravitational torques exerted in the gas to estimate the efficiency of the angular momentum exchange. The gravity torques are negative from 25 to 100pc and the gas loses its angular momentum in a rotation period, providing evidence of a highly efficient inflow towards the center. This phenomenon shows that the massive central black hole has a significant dynamical influence on the gas, triggering its fueling., Comment: 19 pages, 21 figures, submitted to A&A

We consider the process of high-order harmonics generation (HHG) in the xenon atom enhanced by the inter-shell correlation between the valence 5p and inner 4d shells. We derive the HHG spectrum from a numerical solution of the one-electron time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation multiplied by the enhancement factor taken as the photoionization cross-sections ratio calculated with and without the inter-shell correlation. Such a simplified approach is adequate to describe the experimental HHG spectrum reported by Shiner et al [Nat. Phys. 7, 464 (2011)] generated by a single color IR laser. Similarly, we find good agreement when applied to the two-color driven HHG spectra reported by Facciala et al [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 093902 (2016)].

We present a 0.16% precise and 0.27% accurate determination of R0, the distance to the Galactic Center. Our measurement uses the star S2 on its 16-year orbit around the massive black hole Sgr A* that we followed astrometrically and spectroscopically for 27 years. Since 2017, we added near-infrared interferometry with the VLTI beam combiner GRAVITY, yielding a direct measurement of the separation vector between S2 and Sgr A* with an accuracy as good as 20 micro-arcsec in the best cases. S2 passed the pericenter of its highly eccentric orbit in May 2018, and we followed the passage with dense sampling throughout the year. Together with our spectroscopy, in the best cases with an error of 7 km/s, this yields a geometric distance estimate: R0 = 8178 +- 13(stat.) +- 22(sys.) pc. This work updates our previous publication in which we reported the first detection of the gravitational redshift in the S2 data. To date, infrared interferometry at best achieved contrast ratios of a few times $10^{-4}$ on bright targets. GRAVITY, with its dual-field mode, is now capable of high contrast observations, enabling the direct observation of exoplanets. We demonstrate the technique on HR8799, a young planetary system composed of four known giant exoplanets. We used the GRAVITY fringe tracker to lock the fringes on the central star, and integrated off-axis on the HR8799e planet situated at 390 mas from the star. Data reduction included post-processing to remove the flux leaking from the central star and to extract the coherent flux of the planet. The inferred K band spectrum of the planet has a spectral resolution of 500. We also derive the astrometric position of the planet relative to the star with a precision on the order of 100$\,\mu$as. The GRAVITY astrometric measurement disfavors perfectly coplanar stable orbital solutions. A small adjustment of a few degrees to the orbital inclination of HR 8799 e can resolve the tension, implying that the orbits are close to, but not strictly coplanar. The spectrum, with a signal-to-noise ratio of $\approx 5$ per spectral channel, is compatible with a late-type L brown dwarf. Using Exo-REM synthetic spectra, we derive a temperature of $1150\pm50$\,K and a surface gravity of $10^{4.3\pm0.3}\,$cm/s$^{2}$. This corresponds to a radius of $1.17^{+0.13}_{-0.11}\,R_{\rm Jup}$ and a mass of $10^{+7}_{-4}\,M_{\rm Jup}$, which is an independent confirmation of mass estimates from evolutionary models. Thanks to high-resolution and non-dispersive spectrometers onboard future X-ray missions such as XRISM and Athena, we are finally poised to answer important questions about the formation and evolution of galaxies and large-scale structure. However, we currently lack an adequate understanding of many atomic processes behind the spectral features we will soon observe. Large error bars on parameters as critical as transition energies and atomic cross sections can lead to unacceptable uncertainties in the calculations of e.g., elemental abundance, velocity, and temperature. Unless we address these issues, we risk limiting the full scientific potential of these missions. Here we present a new bowshock blue-shifted source in the close vicinity of Sgr A* that we name X8. We use data-sets that are based on SINFONI observations with the Very Large Telescope. We can trace the source between 2006 and 2016 in the blue-shifted line maps and it shows not only positional similarities to X7 but also the same spectral footprint. The symmetry axis of both extended sources points towards Sgr A* and exhibits [Fe III] emission lines that arise due to wind-wind shocks. In particular, the source X8 has a bipolar morphology, which makes it the closest bipolar source in the vicinity of Sgr A*. In addition, we can trace a K-band continuum counterpart of X8. This points towards a stellar counterpart to the line-map emission. Overall, the source X8 can be interpreted as either a Young Stellar Object or a young planetary nebula, which makes this source unique among so-far detected main-sequence OB stars in this region., Comment: Accepted for publication by A&A, 15 pages, 13 figures

We provide an up-to-date summary of the current observational and theoretical studies of stellar bow-shock sources close to the Galactic centre. The symmetry axis of a bow shock provides the information on the relative motion of the star with respect to the ambient medium, while the photometry and spectroscopy in NIR domain give information about the 3D motion of the star. Hence, it is possible from this data to obtain an estimate on the motion of the ambient medium. In combination with the estimate of the bow-shock size, it is possible to infer the valuable information on the density of the hot accretion flow close to the Galactic centre.
