Abstract Rechargeable sodium-chlorine (Na-Cl2) batteries show high theoretical specific energy density and excellent adaptability for extreme environmental applications. However, the reported cycle life is mostly less than 500 cycles, and the understanding of battery failure mechanisms is quite limited. In this work, we demonstrate that the substantially increased voltage polarization plays a critical role in the battery failure. Typically, the passivation on the porous cathode caused by the deposition of insulated sodium chloride (NaCl) is a crucial factor, significantly influencing the three-phase chlorine (NaCl/Na+, Cl-/Cl2) conversion kinetics. Here, a self-depassivation strategy enabled by iodine anion (I-)-tuned NaCl deposition was implemented to enhance the chlorine reversibility. The nucleation and growth of NaCl crystals are well balanced through strong coordination of the NaI deposition-dissolution process, achieving depassivation on the cathode and improving the reoxidation efficiency of solid NaCl. Consequently, the resultant Na-Cl2 battery delivers a super-long cycle life up to 2000 cycles.

Abstract Background Taxol, derived from Taxus trees, is a valuable natural resource for the development of anticancer drugs. Endophytic fungi from Taxus trees are a promising alternative source of Taxol. However, the impact of plant-endophytic microbial interaction on the host’s Taxol biosynthesis is largely unknown. Results In the current study, the diversity of endophytic fungi in three different Taxus species was analyzed using Internal Transcribed Spacer sequencing. A total of 271 Operational Taxonomic Units (OTUs) were identified, grouping into 2 phyla, 8 classes, 16 orders, 19 families, and 19 genera. Alpha and beta diversity analysis indicated significant differences in endophytic fungal communities among the various Taxus trees. At the genus level, Alternaria and Davidiella were predominantly found in T. mairei and T. media, respectively. By utilizing a previously published dataset, a Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to predict the taxol biosynthesis-related fungal genera. Following screening, two isolates of Alternaria (L7 and M14) were obtained. Effect of inoculation with Alternaria isolates on the gene expression and metabolite accumulation of T. mairei was determined by transcriptomic and untargeted metabolomic studies. The co-inoculation assay suggests that the two Alternaria isolates may have a negative regulatory effect on taxol biosynthesis by influencing hormone signaling pathways. Conclusion Our findings will serve as a foundation for advancing the production and utilization of Taxus and will also aid in screening endophytic fungi related to taxol production.

Abstract Visual adaptive devices have potential to simplify circuits and algorithms in machine vision systems to adapt and perceive images with varying brightness levels, which is however limited by sluggish adaptation process. Here, the avalanche tuning as feedforward inhibition in bionic two-dimensional (2D) transistor is proposed for fast and high-frequency visual adaptation behavior with microsecond-level accurate perception, the adaptation speed is over 104 times faster than that of human retina and reported bionic sensors. As light intensity changes, the bionic transistor spontaneously switches between avalanche and photoconductive effect, varying responsivity in both magnitude and sign (from 7.6 × 104 to −1 × 103 A/W), thereby achieving ultra-fast scotopic and photopic adaptation process of 108 and 268 μs, respectively. By further combining convolutional neural networks with avalanche-tuned bionic transistor, an adaptative machine vision is achieved with remarkable microsecond-level rapid adaptation capabilities and robust image recognition with over 98% precision in both dim and bright conditions.

Abstract Infectious keratitis is among the major causes of global blindness. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images allow the characterizing of cross-sectional structures in the cornea with keratitis thus revealing the severity of inflammation, and can also provide 360-degree information on anterior chambers. The development of image analysis methods for such cases, particularly deep learning methods, requires a large number of annotated images, but to date, there is no such open-access AS-OCT image repository. For this reason, this work provides a dataset containing a total of 1168 AS-OCT images of patients with keratitis, including 768 full-frame images (6 patients). Each image has associated segmentation labels for lesions and cornea, and also labels of iris for full-frame images. This study provides a great opportunity to advance the field of image analysis on AS-OCT images in both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) and would aid in the development of artificial intelligence-based keratitis management.

Abstract Resistive switching memories have garnered significant attention due to their high‐density integration and rapid in‐memory computing beyond von Neumann's architecture. However, significant challenges are posed in practical applications with respect to their manufacturing process complexity, a leakage current of high resistance state (HRS), and the sneak‐path current problem that limits their scalability. Here, a mild‐temperature thermal oxidation technique for the fabrication of low‐power and ultra‐steep memristor based on Ag/TiOx/SnOx/SnSe2/Au architecture is developed. Benefiting from a self‐assembled oxidation layer and the formation/rupture of oxygen vacancy conductive filaments, the device exhibits an exceptional threshold switching behavior with high switch ratio exceeding 106, low threshold voltage of ≈1 V, long‐term retention of >104 s, an ultra‐small subthreshold swing of 2.5 mV decade−1 and high air‐stability surpassing 4 months. By decreasing temperature, the device undergoes a transition from unipolar volatile to bipolar nonvolatile characteristics, elucidating the role of oxygen vacancies migration on the resistive switching process. Further, the 1T1R structure is established between a memristor and a 2H‐MoTe2 transistor by the van der Waals (vdW) stacking approach, achieving the functionality of selector and multi‐value memory with lower power consumption. This work provides a mild‐thermal oxidation technology for the low‐cost production of high‐performance memristors toward future in‐memory computing applications.

2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPHP) is a widely used organophosphorus flame retardant and plasticizer, which is commonly found in the environment. EHDPHP not only potentially harms the environment but also causes different degrees of damage to the organism. In this study, the duodenum of chicks was selected as the potential toxic target organ to explore the mechanism of duodenal injury induced by EHDPHP exposure. Ninety one-day-old healthy male chicks were selected and randomly divided into C1(control group), C2(solvent control group), L(800 mg/kg), M(1600 mg/kg), H(3200 mg/kg) according to different doses of EHDPHP after one week of environmental adaptation. The chicks were given continuous gavage for 14 d, 28 d, and 42 d. It was found that constant exposure to EHDPHP caused an increase in duodenal MDA content, a decrease in P-gp, SOD, GSH-Px activities, and a decrease in duodenal mucosal immune factor (sIgA, GSH-Px). The expression of sIgM and mucosal link proteins (CLDN, OCLN, ZO-1, JAM) decreased, and the expression of the inflammatory protein (NF-κB, COX2) in duodenal tissues was up-regulated. The results showed that continuous exposure to EHDPHP could cause duodenal oxidative stress, inflammation, and mucosal barrier damage in chicks, which provided a basis for studying the mechanism of toxic damage caused by EHDPHP in poultry.

Wound management is an important issue that places enormous pressure on the physical and mental health of patients, especially in cases of infection, where the increased inflammatory response could lead to severe hypertrophic scars (HSs). In this study, a hydrogel dressing was developed by combining the high strength and toughness, swelling resistance, antibacterial and antioxidant capabilities. The hydrogel matrix was composed of a double network of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and agarose with excellent mechanical properties. Hyperbranched polylysine (HBPL), a highly effective antibacterial cationic polymer, and tannic acid (TA), a strong antioxidant molecule, were added to the hydrogel as functional components. Examination of antibacterial and antioxidant properties of the hydrogel confirmed the full play of the efficacy of HBPL and TA. In the in vivo studies of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, the hydrogel had shown obvious promotion of wound healing, and more profoundly, significant suppression of scar formation. Due to the common raw materials and simple preparation methods, this hydrogel can be mass produced and used for accelerating wound healing while preventing HSs in infected wounds.

Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) is a prominent synthetic polymer widely used in biomedicine. Despite its notable success, recent clinical evidence highlights concerns regarding the immunogenicity and adverse effects associated with PEG in PEGylated proteins and lipid nanoparticles. Previous studies have found a neutral helical polypeptide poly(γ-(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethyl l-glutamate), namely L-P(EG3Glu), as a potential alternative to PEG, displaying lower immunogenicity. To comprehensively assess the immunogenicity, distribution, degradation, and biosafety of L-P(EG3Glu), herein, we employ assays including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, positron emission tomography-computed tomography, and fluorescent resonance energy transfer. Our investigations involve in vivo immune responses, biodistribution, and macrophage activation of interferon (IFN) conjugates tethered with helical L-P(EG3Glu) (L20k-IFN), random-coiled DL-P(EG3Glu) (DL20k-IFN), and PEG (PEG20k-IFN). Key findings encompass: minimal anti-IFN and anti-polymer antibodies elicited by L20k-IFN; length-dependent affinity of PEG to anti-PEG antibodies; accelerated clearance of DL20k-IFN and PEG20k-IFN linked to anti-IFN and anti-polymer IgG; complement activation for DL20k-IFN and PEG20k-IFN but not L20k-IFN; differential clearance with L20k-IFN kidney-based, and DL20k-IFN/PEG20k-IFN accumulation mainly in liver/spleen; enhanced macrophage activation by DL20k-IFN and PEG20k-IFN; L-P(EG3Glu) resistance to proteolysis; and safer repeated administrations of L-P(EG3Glu) in rats. Overall, this study offers comprehensive insights into the lower immunogenicity of L-P(EG3Glu) compared to DL-P(EG3Glu) and PEG, supporting its potential clinical use in protein conjugation and nanomedicines.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and aggressive malignant brain tumor in adults and is poorly controlled. Previous studies have shown that both macrophages and angiogenesis play significant roles in GBM progression, and co-targeting of CSF1R and VEGFR is likely to be an effective strategy for GBM treatment. Therefore, this study developed a novel and selective inhibitor of CSF1R and VEGFR, SYHA1813, possessing potent antitumor activity against GBM. SYHA1813 inhibited VEGFR and CSF1R kinase activities with high potency and selectivity and thus blocked the cell viability of HUVECs and macrophages and exhibited anti-angiogenetic effects both in vitro and in vivo. SYHA1813 also displayed potent in vivo antitumor activity against GBM in immune-competent and immune-deficient mouse models, including temozolomide (TMZ) insensitive tumors. Notably, SYHA1813 could penetrate the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and prolong the survival time of mice bearing intracranial GBM xenografts. Moreover, SYHA1813 treatment resulted in a synergistic antitumor efficacy in combination with the PD-1 antibody. As a clinical proof of concept, SYHA1813 achieved confirmed responses in patients with recurrent GBM in an ongoing first-in-human phase I trial. The data of this study support the rationale for an ongoing phase I clinical study (ChiCTR2100045380).

Jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ) acts as the repressor of the JA signaling pathway and plays a significant role in stress-inducible defense, hormone crosstalk, and the regulation of the growth-defense tradeoff. The aim of this study is to systematically survey and analyze the JAZ gene family in Coix lacryma-jobi and unveil its expression profiles in diverse organs under high-temperature stress using transcriptome. The results identified a total of 20 JAZ family proteins randomly mapped on four chromosomes and encoding 159–409 amino acids. They were clustered into six groups and were mainly located in the nucleus. The conserved motifs, gene composition, and secondary structure of ClJAZ members within the same subtribes were similar. Multitudinous cis-regulating elements employed in hormone responsiveness and stress responsiveness were displayed before the promoter sequences of ClJAZ1-ClJAZ20. ClJAZ1-ClJAZ20 were differentially distributed across diverse organs (the roots, shoots, leaves, kernels, glumes, and flowers), exposed to high-temperature stresses, and treated using ABA or MeJA. A total of 29115 DEGs were identified under heat stress, which were mainly involved in biological regulation and the metabolic process. Intriguingly, ClJAZ15 was highly expressed in the leaves of C. lacryma-jobi, down-regulated by MeJA, but up-regulated by heat stress and ABA, inferring that ClJAZ15 might be associated with ABA-inducible heat stress. The results laid a foundation for in-depth study of the role of ClJAZ family genes in C. lacryma-jobi.

Topologically protected edge channels show prospects for quantum devices. They have been found experimentally in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators (QSHIs), weak topological insulators, and higher-order topological insulators, but the number of materials realizing these topologies is still quite limited. Here, we provide evidence for topological edge states within a novel topology named three-dimensional QSHIs. Its topology originates solely from a nonzero S_{z} spin Chern number for each k_{z} plane of the crystal and is realized in bulk α-Bi_{4}I_{4} with trivial symmetry indicators, as we show by density-functional-theory calculations. We experimentally observe the related edge states at each type of monolayer and bilayer step of this material by scanning tunneling microscopy. Consistently, the edge states are neither interrupted nor backscattered by defects at the step edges corroborating their helical character as expected from the nontrivial topology. Furthermore, two individual edge channels are directly observed at bilayer steps without visible interaction gap opening, demonstrating the robustness of these edge modes against vertical stacking. Our results establish α-Bi_{4}I_{4} as the first material realization of a 3D QSHI whose definition goes beyond the scope of topological symmetry indicators, and provide a pathway for realizing nearly quantized spin Hall conductivity per unit cell in a bulk crystal.

Fractional vegetation cover (FVC) is an essential metric for valuating ecosystem health and soil erosion. Traditional ground-measuring methods are inadequate for large-scale FVC monitoring, while remote sensing-based estimation approaches face issues such as spatial scale discrepancies between ground truth data and image pixels, as well as limited sample representativeness. This study proposes a method for FVC estimation integrating uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) and satellite imagery using machine learning (ML) models. First, we assess the vegetation extraction performance of three classification methods (OBIA-RF, threshold, and K-means) under UAV imagery. The optimal method is then selected for binary classification and aggregated to generate high-accuracy FVC reference data matching the spatial resolutions of different satellite images. Subsequently, we construct FVC estimation models using four ML algorithms (KNN, MLP, RF, and XGBoost) and utilize the SHapley Additive exPlanation (SHAP) method to assess the impact of spectral features and vegetation indices (VIs) on model predictions. Finally, the best model is used to map FVC in the study region. Our results indicate that the OBIA-RF method effectively extract vegetation information from UAV images, achieving an average precision and recall of 0.906 and 0.929, respectively. This method effectively generates high-accuracy FVC reference data. With the improvement in the spatial resolution of satellite images, the variability of FVC data decreases and spatial continuity increases. The RF model outperforms others in FVC estimation at 10 m and 20 m resolutions, with R2 values of 0.827 and 0.929, respectively. Conversely, the XGBoost model achieves the highest accuracy at a 30 m resolution, with an R2 of 0.847. This study also found that FVC was significantly related to a number of satellite image VIs (including red edge and near-infrared bands), and this correlation was enhanced in coarser resolution images. The method proposed in this study effectively addresses the shortcomings of conventional FVC estimation methods, improves the accuracy of FVC monitoring in soil erosion areas, and serves as a reference for large-scale ecological environment monitoring using UAV technology.

Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) forest is a key ecosystem and its soil microbial community plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem’s functions, but it is very vulnerable to climate change. An altitude gradient can positively simulate environmental conditions caused by climate change, and hence, it provides an efficient means of investigating the response of soil microorganisms to such climatic changes. However, while previous research has largely concentrated on plant–soil–microorganism interactions across broad altitudinal ranges encompassing multiple vegetation types, studies examining these interactions within a single ecosystem across small altitudinal gradients remain scarce. This study took Moso bamboo forests at different altitudes in Wuyi Mountain, China, as the research object and used high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze the soil microbial community structure, aiming to elucidate the changes in soil microbial communities along the altitude gradient under the same vegetation type and its main environmental driving factors. This study found that the structure of bacterial community was notably different in Moso bamboo forests’ soil at varying altitudes, unlike the fungal community structure, which showed relatively less variance. Bacteria from Alphaproteobacteria phylum were the most dominant (14.71–22.91%), while Agaricomycetes was the most dominating fungus across all altitudinal gradients (18.29–30.80%). Fungal diversity was higher at 530 m and 850 m, while bacterial diversity was mainly concentrated at 850 m and 1100 m. Redundancy analysis showed that soil texture (sand and clay content) and available potassium content were the main environmental factors affecting fungal community structure, while clay content, pH, and available potassium content were the main drivers of bacterial community structure. This study demonstrates that the altitude gradient significantly affects the soil microbial community structure of Moso bamboo forest, and there are differences in the responses of different microbial groups to the altitude gradient. Soil properties are important environmental factors that shape microbial communities. The results of this study contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of altitude gradient on the soil microbial community structure of Moso bamboo forests, thus providing support for sustainable management of Moso bamboo forests under climate change scenarios.

Many gastrointestinal simulation methods have been used to predict bioavailability, but the suitability of different methods for the same metal(loid)s varies widely, which inevitably affects the accuracy of human health risk assessment. Arsenic is a common and important contaminant in many contaminated land situations. It can be readily absorbed and has teratogenic and mutagenic toxicity. Therefore, in this study, four the most commonly used in vitro simulation methods (the Physiologically Based Extraction Test (PBET), In Vitro Gastrointestinal Method (IVG), Soluble Bioavailability Research Consortium (SBRC), the Unified BARGE Method (UBM)) were tested against an in vivo animal live model, to evaluate their effectiveness for the prediction of soil As bioavailability in 10 industrially contaminated soils. The soil As relative bioavailability (RBA) varied between 15% and 68% in the different soils. As bioaccessibility differed between the 4 gastro-intestinal simulation methods. Gastric phase of UBM (UBMG) predicted As relative bioavailability the best of the 4 assays (R2 = 0.81). This study provides theoretical and technical support to refine human health risk assessment of As in soils from urban industrial legacy contaminated sites.

Laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) possesses unique advantages in manufacturing complex structures. The mechanical properties of thin-wall structures are crucial for the application. This study investigates the influence of wall thickness on defects and mechanical properties of LPBF Hastelloy X (HX) superalloy. As the wall thickness decreases from 1.5 mm to 0.25 mm, the diameter of sub-grains inside the molten pool increases, exhibiting a progressively enhanced //transverse direction (TD) texture in thin wall structure. Meanwhile, decreasing wall thickness leads to increased porosity and cracks due to unstable molten pool and higher residual stress. The crack initiates at columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) position and propagates along the building direction (BD). The tensile strength of the LPBF HX specimens in the horizontal and vertical directions is 773.5 MPa and 642.1 MPa with thickness of 1.5 mm, respectively, while the elongation of both specimens is close to 35%. When the wall thickness decreases to 0.25 mm, the elongation significantly decreases due to the evolution of microstructure anisotropy and the cracks along the BD, reaching 10.1% and 24.3% for horizontal and vertical specimens. This work illustrates the defects, microstructural evolution and the mechanical properties anisotropy in thin-wall structures of LPBF HX, providing a foundation for adjusting and optimizing the performance of subsequent thin-wall printing processes.

Object detection via remote sensing encounters significant challenges due to factors such as small target sizes, uneven target distribution, and complex backgrounds. This paper introduces the K-CBST YOLO algorithm, which is designed to address these challenges. It features a novel architecture that integrates the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) and Swin-Transformer to enhance global semantic understanding of feature maps and maximize the utilization of contextual information. Such integration significantly improves the accuracy with which small targets are detected against complex backgrounds. Additionally, we propose an improved detection network that combines the improved K-Means algorithm with a smooth Non-Maximum Suppression (NMS) algorithm. This network employs an adaptive dynamic K-Means clustering algorithm to pinpoint target areas of concentration in remote sensing images that feature varied distributions and uses a smooth NMS algorithm to suppress the confidence of overlapping candidate boxes, thereby minimizing their interference with subsequent detection results. The enhanced algorithm substantially bolsters the model’s robustness in handling multi-scale target distributions, preserves more potentially valid information, and diminishes the likelihood of missed detections. This study involved experiments performed on the publicly available DIOR remote sensing image dataset and the DOTA aerial image dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that, compared with other advanced detection algorithms, K-CBST YOLO outperforms all its counterparts in handling both datasets. It achieved a 68.3% mean Average Precision (mAP) on the DIOR dataset and a 78.4% mAP on the DOTA dataset.

Epigenetic therapies that cause genome-wide epigenetic alterations, could trigger local interplay between different histone marks, leading to a switch of transcriptional outcome and therapeutic responses of epigenetic treatment. However, in human cancers with diverse oncogenic activation, how oncogenic pathways cooperate with epigenetic modifiers to regulate the histone mark interplay is poorly understood. We herein discover that the hedgehog (Hh) pathway reprograms the histone methylation landscape in breast cancer, especially in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). This facilitates the histone acetylation caused by histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors and gives rise to new therapeutic vulnerability of combination therapies. Specifically, overexpression of zinc finger protein of the cerebellum 1 (ZIC1) in breast cancer promotes Hh activation, facilitating the switch of H3K27 methylation (H3K27me) to acetylation (H3K27ac). The mutually exclusive relationship of H3K27me and H3K27ac allows their functional interplay at oncogenic gene locus and switches therapeutic outcomes. Using multiple in vivo breast cancer models including patient-derived TNBC xenograft, we show that Hh signaling-orchestrated H3K27me and H3K27ac interplay tailors combination epigenetic drugs in treating breast cancer. Together, this study reveals the new role of Hh signaling-regulated histone modifications interplay in responding to HDAC inhibitors and suggests new epigenetically-targeted therapeutic solutions for treating TNBC.

Abstract Physical reservoirs holding intrinsic nonlinearity, high dimensionality, and memory effects have attracted considerable interest regarding solving complex tasks efficiently. Particularly, spintronic and strain-mediated electronic physical reservoirs are appealing due to their high speed, multi-parameter fusion and low power consumption. Here, we experimentally realize a skyrmion-enhanced strain-mediated physical reservoir in a multiferroic heterostructure of Pt/Co/Gd multilayers on (001)-oriented 0.7PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3−0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT). The enhancement is coming from the fusion of magnetic skyrmions and electro resistivity tuned by strain simultaneously. The functionality of the strain-mediated RC system is successfully achieved via a sequential waveform classification task with the recognition rate of 99.3% for the last waveform, and a Mackey-Glass time series prediction task with normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 0.2 for a 20-step prediction. Our work lays the foundations for low-power neuromorphic computing systems with magneto-electro-ferroelastic tunability, representing a further step towards developing future strain-mediated spintronic applications.

ObjectiveOur aim is to investigate the cut-off point of distress and the influencing factors associated with distress in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer.MethodsA cross-sectional survey of distress was conducted in 167 patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer admitted to the Department of General Surgery of a tertiary care hospital from July 2020 to March 2022. Patients completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Distress Thermometer (DT) questionnaire within 3 days of admission. The HADS ≥15 was used as the gold standard, and the cut-off point of the DT measure was analyzed using the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve. The cut-off point obtained by ROC curve analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of distress in breast cancer patients by univariate and multivariate regression analysis.ResultsA total of 167 patients completed the survey, with an average HADS score of 8.43 ± 5.84 and a total HADS score of ≥15 in 37 (22.16%) patients, the mean DT score was 2.96 ± 1.85. ROC curve analysis showed an area under the curve of 0.885, with a maximum Jorden index (0.723) at a DT score of 4, the sensitivity was 100.0% and specificity was 72.3%. There were 73 (43.71%) patients with DT score ≥ 4. Regression analysis showed that insurance/financial problems, dealing with partner problems, tension, bathing/dressing problems, pain, and sleep problems were independent risk factors for l distress in newly diagnosed breast cancer patients.ConclusionA DT score 4 is the cut-off point for distress in patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. In clinical practice, target intervention should be carried out according to the risk factors of distress of patients.

Abstract In recent years, 2D reconfigurable phototransistors (RPTs) have been applied in broadband convolutional processing, retinomorphic hardware devices, and non‐volatile memorizers. However, there has been a lack of investigation into all‐2D Schottky junctions used in RPT with polarity control behavior. Herein, a vertically stacked multilayered WS2/WTe2 Schottky RPT is reported. The semimetal characteristics of 1T’‐WTe2 is designed to form a built‐in electric field of 69 meV across the heterojunction and WS2 exhibits gate‐tunable characteristics. Therefore, reconfigurable rectifying behavior and self‐driven bidirectional photo response can be achieved. The phototransistor possesses a gate‐tunable rectification ratio ranging from 10−2 to 105, and the corresponding logic half‐wave rectifier shows excellent switchable rectifying states. Under 635 nm illumination, the responsivity can be adjusted from −1325 to 430 mA W−1 with reversed signs. Meanwhile, the maximum power conversion efficiency is 2.84%, and the specific detectivity is 1.47 × 1012 Jones. The device shows both negative and positive responsivity with linear gate dependence within a voltage window of 10 V. Impressively, nonvolatile photovoltaic performance can be demonstrated by reversing short‐circuit current and open‐circuit voltage by applying and releasing pulsed gate voltage. Finally, reconfigurable polarization behavior, single‐pixel imaging, and the optical logic circuit are applicable to the heterostructure.

Laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF) technique has broad prospects in lightweight structure designing and rapid manufacturing. In this study, solution treatment (ST), hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and HIP+ST were performed on crack-free LPBF Hastelloy X. The corresponding microstructure, precipitates, and mechanical properties after different heat treatments were compared to identify the critical factor affecting the fracture mechanisms at room and elevated temperature. The specimens exhibited a high recrystallization degree under all heat treatment conditions, which had little contribution to the performance differences. However, different holding time and cooling rate led to variations in carbide distribution. Granular M6C carbides were formed in ST specimens, while linear M23C6 carbides were formed in HIP specimens. In contrast, barely no carbides were observed in the HIP+ST specimen. At room temperature, all specimens showed similar tensile strength, while the ranking of elongation was HIP+ST=ST>HIP. The decreased elongation of the HIP specimen was attributed to the linear carbides at grain boundaries. However, the ranking of elongation was presented as HIP>HIP+ST>ST at high temperature. Carbides at grain boundaries coarsened and affected the crack propagation behaviors. The HIP specimen had appropriate carbide size, which restricted the crack propagation within a single grain boundary, forming wedge-shaped cracks. When the carbide was too small or oversized, crack propagated along the grain boundaries and reduced the plasticity. This work demonstrated that the carbide size was a critical factor for the performance control. In addition, the room temperature performance was insufficient for evaluating suitable heat treatment conditions for LPBF Hastelloy X.

Abstract Dynamical seasonal forecast models are improving with time but tend to underestimate the amplitude of atmospheric circulation variability and to have lower skill in predicting summer variability than in winter. Here, we construct Nonlinear AutoRegressive Moving Average models with eXogenous inputs (NARMAX) to develop the analysis of drivers of North Atlantic atmospheric circulation and jet‐stream variability, focusing on the East Atlantic (EA) and Scandinavian (SCA) patterns as well as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index. New time series of these indices are developed from empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Geopotential height data from the ERA5 reanalysis are used to generate the EOFs. Sets of predictors with known associations with these drivers are developed and used to formulate a sliding‐window NARMAX model. This model demonstrates a high degree of predictive accuracy, as indicated by its average correlation coefficients over the testing period (2006–2021): 0.78 for NAO, 0.83 for EA and 0.68 for SCA. In comparison, the SEAS5 and GloSea5 dynamical forecast models exhibit lower correlations with observed circulation changes: for NAO, the correlation coefficients are 0.51 for SEAS5 and 0.34 for GloSea5, for EA they are 0.15 and 0.09, respectively, and for SCA, they are 0.28 and 0.24, respectively. Comparison of NARMAX predictions with forecasts and hindcasts from the SEAS5 and GloSea5 models highlights areas where NARMAX can be used to help improve seasonal forecast skill and inform the development of dynamical models, especially in the case of summer.

Porphyra polysaccharide is a special kind of nutrient showing multiple physiological functions including regulating cell proliferation, but the detailed mechanisms are not fully revealed, impairing its further development and applications. This work was to purify and characterize the Porphyra haitanensis polysaccharide (PH), investigate its physiological function, and demonstrate the underlying mechanisms. The purified PH was first characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Then an intestinal epithelial cell model was established, in which PH significantly suppressed cell hyperplasia. Specifically, PH activated the Hippo/YAP pathway, which subsequently activated mTOR pathway, however mTOR activated Hippo in the absence of PH. Moreover, both the inhibition of Hippo by YAP1 knock-down and the suppression of mTOR by rapamycin impaired PH function. These results indicated that PH attenuated hyperplasia activity by remodeling the cross-talk between Hippo/YAP and mTOR pathways, which revealed potential targets and approaches for treating hyperplasia-related diseases and provided novel ways to utilize P. haitanensis as well as other related functional foods.

Landslides are a natural disaster that exists widely in the world and poses a great threat to human life and property, so it is of great importance to identify and locate landslides. Traditional manual interpretation can effectively identify landslides, but its efficiency is very low for large interpreted areas. In this sense, a landslide recognition method based on the Dual Graph Convolutional Network (DGCNet) is proposed to identify the landslide in remote sensing images quickly and accurately. The remote sensing image (regional remote sensing image) of the northern mountainous area of Tuergen Township, Xinyuan County, Xinjiang Province, was obtained by GeoEye-1 (spatial resolution: 0.5 m). Then, the DGCNet is used to train the labeled images, which finally shows good accuracy of landslide recognition. To show the difference with the traditional convolutional network model, this paper adopts a convolution neural network algorithm named GoogLeNet for image recognition to carry out a comparative analysis, the remote sensing satellite images (single terrain image) of Xinyuan County, Xinjiang Province is used as the data set, and the prediction accuracy is 81.25%. Compared with the GoogLeNet model, the DGCNet model has a larger identification range, which provides a new method for landslide recognition of large-scale regional remote sensing images, but the performance of DGCNet is highly dependent on the quality and characteristics of the input image. If the input data quality is poor or the image structure is unclear, the model’s performance may decline.

UAV clusters are the main application form of multi-intelligence for the intelligent era. Especially in the context of strikes, UAV clusters become an efficient weapon resource on the battlefield by their flexible mobility, no casualties, and low cost. This paper studies the UAV continuous coverage control method based on cluster reconfiguration in the strike context. Firstly, a consistent formation control law for UAVs based on 4-connection topology is proposed based on consistency theory to achieve cluster control and continuous coverage of UAVs. Secondly, a virtual repair trajectory is designed based on the disengaged formation set, and a continuous coverage control law is designed based on the sliding mode theory to solve the topological damage and discontinuous coverage of UAV clusters. Finally, simulation experiments show that the proposed method has obvious performance improvement in UAV cluster reconfiguration convergence time and continuous coverage control, effectively guaranteeing the robustness, destructiveness, and timeliness of UAV cluster reconfiguration.

The distribution of rooftop PV is spatial heterogeneity with the location of buildings. With the assistance of geographic information systems, this study proposed an integrated research framework for the geo-spatial potential assessment of PV systems on the roof of urban buildings as well as its feasibility analysis. Furthermore, a geo-spatialization of electricity self-sufficiency rate is also introduced to explore the contribution of rooftop PV on urban energy security. The proposed approach was verified by a case study in the central area of Wuhan, China with a 100 m spatial resolution. The results show that the maximum annual PV power generation potential in the central area of Wuhan is 10,757 GWh, which could satisfy 31.83% of local energy consumption. A 100% deployment of rooftop PV would also lead to a great carbon emission reduction, i.e. 8.62 million tons per year, with an annual total cost of 8.07 bn USD. According to the distribution characteristics of the PV self-sufficiency rate on the map, priority is given to investing in the peripheral areas of the city with the higher return. It is estimated that when the PV conversion rate increases by 5%, the peak self-sufficiency rate to the area will increase by 20% in Wuhan. Moreover, if the conversion rate of PV system reaches 47.13%, a fully utilized rooftop in Wuhan for PV deployment could meet the local electricity demand, which implies a 100% electricity self-sufficiency. This study is helpful to understand the spatial heterogeneity of rooftop PV in urban areas, and could serve as the guidelines for local governments to develop renewable energy in a sustainable way.

Abstract Background The human endometrium is a highly regenerative tissue that is believed to have two main types of stem cells: endometrial mesenchymal/stromal stem cells (eMSCs) and endometrial epithelial stem cells (eESCs). So far, eMSCs have been extensively studied, whereas the studies of eESCs are constrained by the inability to culture and expand them in vitro. The aim of this study is to establish an efficient method for the production of eESCs from human endometrium for potential clinical application in intrauterine adhesion (IUA). Results Here we developed a culture condition with a combination of some small molecules for in vitro culturing and expansion of human SSEA-1+ cells. The SSEA-1+ cells exhibited stem/progenitor cell activity in vitro, including clonogenicity and differentiation capacity into endometrial epithelial cell-like cells. In addition, the SSEA-1+ cells, embedded in extracellular matrix, swiftly self-organized into organoid structures with long-term expansion capacity and histological phenotype of the human endometrial epithelium. Specifically, we found that the SSEA-1+ cells showed stronger therapeutic potential than eMSCs for IUA in vitro. In a rat model of IUA, in situ injection of the SSEA-1+ cells-laden chitosan could efficiently reduce fibrosis and facilitate endometrial regeneration. Conclusions Our work demonstrates an approach for isolation and expansion of human eESCs in vitro, and an appropriate marker, SSEA-1, to identify eESCs. Furthermore, the SSEA-1+ cells-laden chitosan might provide a novel cell-based approach for IUA treatment. These findings will advance the understanding of pathophysiology during endometrial restoration which may ultimately lead to more rational clinical practice. Graphical Abstract

Rapid urbanisation in China has resulted in an increased demand for land in towns and cities. To upgrade and modernise, China has also moved many major industries from urban centres to less populated areas. With the high economic value of urban land, the transformation and utilisation of brownfield areas have become important economically and socially. The Chinese government has recognised the need for strong frameworks to safeguard soil and groundwater quality, with brownfield sites a key category for management. Strong scientific, regulatory and decision-making frameworks are needed and being adopted to ensure practical, careful and wise use of central and localised government resources, to manage the reuse and regeneration of these brownfield sites. This paper reviews the context, policies and management procedures of developing brownfield sites in countries with a history of brownfield management and discusses China’s current situation and priorities for brownfield governance and redevelopment. These include (1) clarification of brownfield site soil contamination risk control standards and risk assessment procedures, (2) the responsibilities of different national and local agencies, (3) the establishment of a national expert committee to advise on best practices, policy and process, (4) the use of registered brownfield databases at national, provincial, municipal and county levels, and (5) the set up of soil pollution prevention fund at the provincial level.

IntroductionTarsal plate repair is the major challenge of eyelid reconstruction for the oculoplastic surgeon. The ideal synthetic tarsal plate substitute should imitate the microstructure and mechanical strength of the natural eyelid. The aim of this work was to develop a novel bionic substitute for eyelid reconstruction.MethodsThree types of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds (random, oriented, and azithromycin-loaded oriented scaffolds) were prepared using an improved thermal-induced phase separation technique. The microstructure of the scaffolds was examined by scanning electron microscopy. In vitro cytotoxicity was assessed using scaffold extracts. Fibroblast and primary rat meibomian gland epithelial cells (rMGCs) were cultured within the scaffolds, and their behavior was observed using fluorescence staining. Three types of PLGA scaffolds were implanted into rabbit eyelid defect in vivo to evaluate their inductive tissue repair function.ResultsWe successfully fabricated three types of PLGA scaffolds with varying pore architectures, and the axially aligned scaffold demonstrated interconnected and vertically parallel channels. In vitro cytotoxicity tests using scaffold extracts revealed no apparent cytotoxicity. Fluorescence staining showed that both Fibroblast and rMGCs could adhere well onto the pore walls, with fibroblast elongating along the axially aligned porous structure. At 8 weeks post-implantation, all scaffolds were well integrated by fibrovascular tissue. The axially aligned scaffold groups exhibited faster degradation compared to the random scaffold group, with smaller fragments surrounded by mature collagen fibers.ConclusionThe study found that the axially aligned scaffolds could well support and guide cellular activities in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the axially aligned scaffold group showed a faster degradation rate with a matched integration rate compared to the random scaffold group. The findings suggest that the oriented scaffold is a promising alternative for eyelid tarsal plate substitutes.

A novel gas-pressurized (GP) torrefaction method at 250 °C has recently been developed that realizes the deep decomposition of cellulose in lignocellulosic solid wastes (LSW) to as high as 90% through deoxygenation and aromatization reactions. However, the deoxygenation and aromatization mechanisms are currently unclear. In this work, these mechanisms were studied through a developed molecular structure calculation method and the GP torrefaction of pure cellulose. The results demonstrate that GP torrefaction at 250 °C causes 47 wt.% of mass loss and 72 wt.% of O removal for cellulose, while traditional torrefaction at atmospheric pressure has almost no impact on cellulose decomposition. The GP-torrefied cellulose is determined to be composed of an aromatic furans nucleus with branch aliphatic C through conventional characterization. A molecular structure calculation method and its principles were developed for further investigation of molecular-level mechanisms. It was found 2-ring furans aromatic compound intermediate is formed by intra- and inter-molecular dehydroxylation reactions of amorphous cellulose, and the removal of O-containing function groups is mainly through the production of H2O. The three-ring furans aromatic compound intermediate and GP-torrefied cellulose are further formed through the polymerization reaction, which enhances the removal of ketones and aldehydes function groups in intermediate torrefied cellulose and form gaseous CO and O-containing organic molecules. A deoxygenation and aromatization mechanism model was developed based on the above investigation. This work provides theoretical guidance for the optimization of the gas-pressurized torrefaction method and a study method for the determination of molecular-level structure and the mechanism investigation of the thermal conversion processes of LSW.

Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) is a common foodborne pathogen causing food poisoning incidents. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity and underlying mechanism of rhamnolipids (RLs) against B. cereus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of RLs for B. cereus were determined to be 16.0 mg/L and 32.0 mg/L, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscope images, as well as data of membrane potential, relative electric conductivity, and leakage of intracellular components revealed that RLs disrupted the integrity of the cell membrane. Furthermore, the reactive oxygen species content, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity indicated that RLs activated the oxidative stress response of B. cereus in response to RLs. Fresh wet noodles (FWN) were used as a food model, and RLs showed a significant killing effect on B. cereus with a sustained inhibitory effect at the concentrations ranging from 128.0 to 1024.0 mg/kg. Additionally, RLs promoted the conversion of free water to bound water in FWN, which improved the storage of FWN and made the taste more resilient and chewy. These results suggest that RLs could be a potential alternative to antimicrobial agents and preservatives for applications in food processing.

Abstract Shikonin is the main component of the traditional Chinese medicine comfrey, which can inhibit the activity of PKM2 by regulating glycolysis and ATP production. Rheumatoid arthritis synovial cells (RA-FLSs) have been reported to increase glycolytic activity and have other similar hallmarks of metabolic activity. In this study, we investigated the effects of shikonin on glycolysis, mitochondrial function, and cell death in RA-FLSs. The results showed that shikonin induced apoptosis and autophagy in RA-FLSs by activating the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibiting intracellular ATP levels, glycolysis-related proteins, and the PI3K-AKT-mTOR signaling pathway. Shikonin can significantly reduce the expression of apoptosis-related proteins, paw swelling in rat arthritic tissues, and the levels of inflammatory factors in peripheral blood, such as TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-17A, and IL-1β while showing less toxicity to the liver and kidney.

Longitudinal disease progression evaluation between follow-up examinations relies on precise registration of medical images. Compared to other medical imaging methods, color fundus photograph, a common retinal examination, is easily affected by eye movements while shooting, for which we think it is necessary to develop a reliable longitudinal registration method for this modality. Thus, the purpose of this study was to propose a robust registration method for longitudinal color fundus photographs and establish a longitudinal retinal registration dataset. In the proposed algorithm, radiation-variation insensitive feature transform (RIFT) feature points were calculated and aligned, followed by further refinement using a normalized total gradient (NTG). Experiments and ablation analyses were conducted on both public and private datasets, using the mean registration error and registration success plot as the main evaluation metrics. The results showed that our proposed method was comparable to other state-of-the-art registration algorithms and was particularly accurate for longitudinal images with disease progression. We believe the proposed method will be beneficial for the longitudinal evaluation of fundus images.

Purpose: To automatically predict the postoperative appearance of blepharoptosis surgeries and evaluate the generated images both objectively and subjectively in a clinical setting. Design: Cross-sectional study. Participants: This study involved 970 pairs of images of 450 eyes from 362 patients undergoing blepharoptosis surgeries at our oculoplastic clinic between June 2016 and April 2021. Methods: Preoperative and postoperative facial images were used to train and test the deep learning–based postoperative appearance prediction system (POAP) consisting of 4 modules, including the data processing module (P), ocular detection module (O), analyzing module (A), and prediction module (P). Main Outcome Measures: The overall and local performance of the system were automatically quantified by the overlap ratio of eyes and by lid contour analysis using midpupil lid distances (MPLDs). Four ophthalmologists and 6 patients were invited to complete a satisfaction scale and a similarity survey with the test set of 75 pairs of images on each scale. Results: The overall performance (mean overlap ratio) was 0.858 ± 0.082. The corresponding multiple radial MPLDs showed no significant differences between the predictive results and the real samples at any angle (P > 0.05). The absolute error between the predicted marginal reflex distance-1 (MRD1) and the actual postoperative MRD1 ranged from 0.013 mm to 1.900 mm (95% within 1 mm, 80% within 0.75 mm). The participating experts and patients were “satisfied” with 268 pairs (35.7%) and “highly satisfied” with most of the outcomes (420 pairs, 56.0%). The similarity score was 9.43 ± 0.79. Conclusions: The fully automatic deep learning–based method can predict postoperative appearance for blepharoptosis surgery with high accuracy and satisfaction, thus offering the patients with blepharoptosis an opportunity to understand the expected change more clearly and to relieve anxiety. In addition, this system could be used to assist patients in selecting surgeons and the recovery phase of daily living, which may offer guidance for inexperienced surgeons as well.

This study investigated the effects of three feeding systems, indoor feeding (CONT), indoor feeding with time-restricted grazing artificial pasture (4 h/day, G4H), and indoor feeding with an eight-hour daily grazing artificial pasture (G8H), on the growth performance, serum metabolites, ruminal fermentation, and fecal microbiota composition of lambs. Average daily gain showed a tendency (p = 0.081) to be higher for the G4H group compared with the CONT group. Moreover, feeding systems did not have a significant effect on most of the serum biochemical indicators in lambs. Concentrations of serum glutathione peroxidase and immunoglobulins (IgA, gG, and IgM) were significantly lower (p < 0.01) in the CONT group. Additionally, a tendency towards higher levels of volatile fatty acids, acetate, and butyrate was found in animals of the G4H group compared to the CONT group. Furthermore, fecal microbiota composition was altered in G4H and G8H groups, resulting in the increased relative abundance of Firmicutes and Ruminococcaceae UCG-005, as well as the decreased relative abundance of Ruminobacter compared with the CONT group. Overall, these results suggest that indoor feeding with restricted grazing time does not significantly affect fattening performance or rumen fermentation but enhances antioxidation and immune function activity and also alters fecal microbiota composition.

Li-rich materials have become one of the most promising cathode candidates for next-generation lithium-ion battery systems due to their high capacity and operating voltage. Conventional O3-type Li-rich materials undergo a structural transition from a layered to a spinel phase during cycling, leading to the degradation in their electrochemical performance, especially in terms of their voltage decay. The oxygen atoms comprising the structure of O2-type Li-rich materials are stacked in the ABAC configuration, which can effectively suppress these harmful phase transitions. However, O2-type Li-rich materials are metastable structures and can only be synthesized via the means of complex ion exchange methods. In addition, the surface of the material is susceptible to side reactions with the electrolyte when charged to high voltages. Here, we explored the optimal conditions for the synthesis of O2-type Li[Li0.25Ni0.1Co0.05Mn0.6]O2 (LLNCM) in more detail by preparing the precursors using the sol-gel method. Meanwhile, the modification of the material’s surface via low-temperature hydrolysis of aluminum isopropoxide has been proposed for the first time in this study to avoid the damage of metastable materials by the high-temperature coating process. The surface-modified materials prepared under optimal conditions exhibited an excellent electrochemical performance, indicating that a highly stable O2-type bulk phase structure with effective surface modification is a potential way to promote the commercial applications of Li-rich cathode materials.

In situ heat injection is a suitable technique for extracting shale oil from reservoirs with high organic matter content but insufficient thermal maturation. To optimize the stimulation process and to avoid unnecessary energy consumption, understanding the thermal process and the effects of thermal parameters is crucial. This research employs a self-developed simulator to build a 2D numerical model of the in situ conversion process of kerogen with electric heaters. A benchmark model is first established to determine the effects of heat injection on crude oil production and kerogen decomposition. Subsequently, this study analyzes the evolution of shale oil within the reservoir, identifying the role of thermal and physical properties in crude oil production and kerogen decomposition during the stimulation treatment. A sensitivity analysis of the thermal properties of the reservoir is also carried out, which allows for defining the role of the thermal conductivity of the rock during the stimulation process. Finally, it is observed that, when using the injection at a constant power, the injection time to achieve a suitable large rate of decomposition is shorter than at a constant temperature—consequently, it has a higher economic advantage.

Technology anxiety contributes to an increased cognitive load and reduces user adoption of novel technologies. An illustrative example of this phenomenon is observed in the field of smart homes.To address this issue, we have identified an interaction paradigm known as natural interaction, which enables humans to engage with technology in a way that closely resembles natural human behavior and communication. This approach offers more user-friendly interactions that users are already familiar with, potentially reducing their cognitive load. In this paper, we present a case study of a smart lock system where we implement natural interaction and deploy it on a mixed reality (MR) device. By leveraging advanced features offered by MR head-mounted displays, we recreate the experience of people opening locks in everyday life. We conduct a user study comparing this interaction with traditional WIMP interaction in a mixed-reality environment. Through the analysis of collected data and user feedback, we examine the advantages and limitations of our proposed system.

The observation of negative capacitance effect is focused on the ferroelectrics, while the antiferroelectrics based on Landau switches may have negative capacitance effect. Here, the authors report the static and transient negative capacitance effect in antiferroelectric PbZrO3 and reveal its origin.

The novel gene YBX3 is important for regulating translation and RNA catabolism and encodes a protein with a highly conserved cold-shock domain. However, its pathogenic roles across cancers (e.g., colon cancer) and its regulation remain unclear. We identified the pathogenic roles of YBX3 and its regulatory lncRNA HEIH in various cancers and investigated their effects on tumor progression in colon cancer. Methods including RNA pull-down, MS, and TMA of 93 patients, qPCR of 12 patients with diverse clinicopathologic stages, and western blotting were performed. The pancancer analysis showed that YBX3 expression varies significantly among not only cancer types but also molecular and immune subtypes of the same cancer. Furthermore, its expression in colon cancer is clinically significant, and there is an obvious negative regulatory association between HEIH and YBX3. Among various cancers, especially colon cancer, YBX3 is more related than HEIH expression to the clinical features and prognosis of subgroups. The receiver operating characteristic analysis showed that HEIH and YBX3 have similar predictive capacity in various cancers. The analysis of differentially expressed genes in colon cancer revealed that they have similar hub gene networks, indicating an oncogenic system with a strong overlap. The results also suggest that YBX3 is associated with tumor immune evasion via different mechanisms involving T-cell exclusion in different cancer types and by the tumor infiltration of immune cells. Interestingly, scRNA-seq revealed that HEIH inhibits this phenomenon. Our results also suggest that YBX3 expression is associated with immune or chemotherapeutic outcomes in various cancers, and YBX3 exhibited a higher predictive power than two of seven standardized biomarkers for response outcomes and overall survival of immune checkpoint blockade subcohorts. In colon cancer cell lines, lncRNA-HEIH and YBX3 associate. MS confirmed that YBX3 was pulled down with HEIH, and western blot showed that HEIH knockdown disinhibited YBX3. This study strongly suggests that lncRNA-HEIH/YBX3 is a pancancer immune-oncogenic system and could serve as a biomarker for diagnosis and prognosis and as a therapeutic target, especially in colon cancer.

Purpose: To develop a deep learning method to automatically monitor the implantable collamer lens (ICL) position and quantify subtle alterations in the anterior chamber using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images for high myopia patients with ICL implantation.Methods: In this study, 798 AS-OCT images of 203 patients undergoing ICL implantation at our eye center from April 2017 to June 2021 were involved. A deep learning system was developed to first isolate the corneoscleral, ICL, and lens, and then quantify clinical important parameters in AS-OCT images (central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, and lens vault).Results: The deep learning system was able to accurately isolate the corneoscleral, ICL, and lens with the Dice coefficient ranging from 0.911 to 0.960, and all the F1 scores >0.900. The relative error between automated measurements and the ground truth for 95% (188 images out of 198) of LVs was within 10%. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) of the machine-ground truth measurements ranged from 0.928 to 0.995. The deep learning method also showed better repeatability than human graders.Conclusion: The deep learning method provides reliable detection and quantification of AS-OCT scans for postoperative ICL implantation, which can simplify and optimize the management of clinical outcomes of ICL implantations. Also, this is a step towards an objective measurement of the postoperative vault, making the data more comparable and repeatable to each other.

Abstract Lung cancer is one of the most aggressive cancers with poor prognosis and high resistance rate. The family of signal transducer and activator of transcriptions (STATs) appears to modulate resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In this work, we demonstrated that STAT3/ZEB1 is a critical axis in gefitinib resistance. STAT3-targeted inhibition therefore is a new potential therapeutic strategy for gefitinib resistance in lung cancer. Our small molecule screening identified a relatively specific STAT3-targeted inhibitor, LL1. Pharmacological and biochemical studies indicated that LL1 block the activation of STAT3 via inhibiting its phosphorylation. Further in vitro and in vivo studies elucidated that LL1 sensitizes the resistance cells to gefitinib through depleting STAT3 activity and blocking STAT3/ZEB1 signaling pathways. Little toxicity of LL1 was observed in animal models. All these favorable results indicated that LL1 is a chemotherapeutic adjuvant for gefitinib resistance in NSCLC.

Growth rate, carcass attributes, and meat quality traits of small ruminants (i.e., sheep and goats) depend on various factors, among which the feeding system is one of the most important factors. However, how feeding systems affect these parameters differ between sheep and goats. Therefore, this review aimed to evaluate the differences in how different feeding systems affect the growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of sheep and goats. It also explored the effects of a new finishing strategy—time-limited grazing with supplements on these traits. Compared with stalled feeding, finishing lambs/kids on pasture-only feed reduced the average daily gain (ADG) and carcass yield, while supplemented-grazing lambs/kids had near-equivalent or higher ADG and carcass attributes. Pasture-grazing increased the meat flavor intensity and healthy fatty acid content (HFAC) of lamb/kid meat. Supplemental grazing lambs had comparable or superior meat sensory attributes and increased meat protein and HFAC compared to stall-fed ones. In contrast, supplemental grazing only improved the meat color of kids but had little effect on other meat qualities. Moreover, time-limited grazing with supplemental concentrates increased the carcass yield and meat quality in lamb meat. Overall, the effects of different feeding systems on growth performance and carcass traits were comparable between sheep and goats but differed in terms of the meat quality.

Soil water deficit is an important factor affecting the source–sink balance of sweet potato during its late-season growth, but water regulation during this period has not been well studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the appropriate irrigation level in late-season sweet potato, and the effect of irrigation level on accumulation and allocation of photosynthetic products. In this study, two yield-based field trials (2021–2022) were conducted in which five late-season irrigation levels set according to the crop evapotranspiration rate were tested (T0: non-irrigation, T1: 33% ETc, T2: 75% ETc, T3: 100% ETc, T4: 125% ETc). The effects of the different irrigation levels on photosynthetic physiological indexes, 13C transfer allocation, water use efficiency (WUE), water productivity (WP), and the yield and economic benefit of sweet potato were studied. The results showed that late-season irrigation significantly increased the total chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate of functional leaves, in addition to promoting the accumulation of above-ground-source organic biomass (p < 0.05). The rate of 13C allocation, maximum accumulation rate (Vmax), and average accumulation rate (Vmean) of dry matter in storage root were significantly higher under T2 irrigation than under the other treatments (p < 0.05). This suggests that both non-irrigation (T0) and over-irrigation (T4) were not conducive to the transfer and allocation of photosynthetic products to storage roots in late-season sweet potato. However, moderate irrigation (T2) effectively promoted the source–sink balance, enhanced the source photosynthetic rate and stimulated the sink activity, such that more photosynthate was allocated to the storage sink. The results also showed that T2 irrigation treatments significantly increased yield, WUE and WP compared to T0 and T4 (p < 0.05), suggesting that moderate irrigation (T2) can significantly promote the potential of storage root production and field productivity. There was a close relationship between economic benefit and marketable sweet potato yield, and both were highest under T2 (p < 0.05), increasing by 36.1% and 59.9% compared with T0 over the two-year study period. In conclusion, irrigation of late-season sweet potato with 75% evapotranspiration (T2) can improve both the yield and production potential. Together, these results support the use of late-season water management in the production of sweet potato.

The typical hypothesis testing issue in statistical analysis is determining whether a pattern is significantly associated with a specific class label. This usually leads to highly challenging multiple-hypothesis testing problems in big data mining scenarios, as millions or billions of hypothesis tests in large-scale exploratory data analysis can result in a large number of false positive results. The permutation testing-based FWER control method (PFWER) is theoretically effective in dealing with multiple hypothesis testing issues. In reality, however, this theoretical approach confronts a serious computational efficiency problem. It takes an extremely long time to compute an appropriate FWER false positive control threshold using PFWER, which is almost impossible to achieve in a reasonable amount of time using human effort on medium- or large-scale data. Although some methods for improving the efficiency of the FWER false positive control threshold calculation have been proposed, most of them are stand-alone, and there is still a lot of space for efficiency improvement. To address this problem, this paper proposes a distributed PFWER false-positive threshold calculation method for large-scale data. The computational effectiveness increases significantly when compared to the current approaches. The FP-growth algorithm is used first for pattern mining, and the mining process reduces the computation of invalid patterns by using pruning operations and index optimization for merging patterns with index transactions. The distributed computing technique is introduced on this basis, and the constructed FP tree is decomposed into a set of subtrees, each corresponding to a subtask. All subtrees (subtasks) are distributed to different computing nodes. Each node independently calculates the local significance threshold according to the designated subtasks. Finally, all local results are aggregated to compute the FWER false positive control threshold, which is completely consistent with the theoretical result. A series of experimental findings on 11 real-world datasets demonstrate that the distributed algorithm proposed in this paper can significantly improve the computation efficiency of PFWER while ensuring its theoretical accuracy.

Melatonin (MT) plays a number of key roles in regulating plant growth and secondary metabolite accumulation. Prunella vulgaris is an important traditional Chinese herbal medicinal plant which is used for the treatment of lymph, goiter, and mastitis. However, the effect of MT on the yield and medicinal component content of P. vulgaris remains still unclear. In this research, we have examined the influence of different concentrations of MT (0, 50, 100, 200, 400 μM) on the physiological characteristics, secondary metabolite contents, and yield of P. vulgaris biomass. The results showed that 50–200 μM MT treatment had a positive effect on P. vulgaris. MT treatment at 100 μM greatly increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase, the contents of soluble sugar and proline, and obviously decreased the relative electrical conductivity, the contents of malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide of leaves. Furthermore, it markedly promoted the growth and development of the root system, increased the content of photosynthetic pigments, improved the performance of photosystems I and II and the coordination of both photosystems, and enhanced the photosynthetic capacity of P. vulgaris. In addition, it significantly increased the dry mass of whole plant and spica and promoted the accumulation of total flavonoids, total phenolics, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, rosmarinic acid, and hyperoside in the spica of P. vulgaris. These findings demonstrated that the application of MT could effectively activate the antioxidant defense system of P. vulgaris, protect the photosynthetic apparatus from photooxidation damage, and improve the photosynthetic capacity and the root absorption capacity, thereby promoting the yield and accumulation of secondary metabolites in P. vulgaris.

Introduction Bulimia nervosa (BN) is a disorder with high health and socioeconomic burdens that typically arises in late adolescence and early adulthood. Previous neuroimaging studies have found functional brain changes in patients with BN. This study aims to review the latest neurobiological evidence from studies of individuals with BN, examine the consistency of these findings and evaluate the food addiction hypothesis of the disease.Methods and analysis A systematic search will be performed using the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase and Web of Science databases, covering the period from database inception to 30 November 2021. Two researchers will be responsible for study selection, quality assessment and data extraction. The anisotropic effect size version of the signed differential mapping method will be used to conduct a coordinate-based meta-analysis. Publication bias will be examined with the Egger test. The quality of studies will be evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.Ethics and dissemination No ethics approval is required for this is a systematic review protocol and does not require the collection of primary data. Free gas saturation is one of the key factors that affect the overall production behaviors of hydrate reservoirs. For example, different free gas contents could alter the thermal response of hydrate reservoirs to the artificial stimulation and hence change the gas production performance. To investigate whether and how much the hydrate reservoir contains free gas, we proposed a thermodynamic method to calculate the total heat consumption of hydrate dissociation throughout gas production and assess the free gas proportion. Based on the monitoring data of the first offshore hydrate production in Japan, we calculated the total heat consumption and analyzed the contributions of heat convection, heat conduction, and sensible heat during the entire test. The calculation results showed that there is likely to be a certain amount of free gas in the hydrate reservoir in the Eastern Nankai Trough. In addition, the analysis of different heat sources revealed the critical thermodynamic phenomenon in which the reservoir sensible heat was the main source for enthalpy of hydrate dissociation, which consistently contributed more than 95% of the total heat supply during the 6-day production test. The results of this work may help upgrade the production strategy for natural gas hydrates.

Fiber laser welding of QP980 steel and press-hardened 22MnB5 steel in butt configuration was performed in this study. The effect of heat input on microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of dissimilar joint was investigated. Laser power employed was varied from 1.6 to 2.4 kW while welding speed was kept constant at 2 m/min. The microstructure of fusion zone (FZ) was changed with the increasing laser power. Martensite and few bainite were observed when laser power ranged from 1.8 to 2.2 kW. Out of this range, the microstructure in FZ consisted of mixed structure of martensite and ferrite. Transformation from liquid phase to ferrite was promoted by Al-Si coating on the surface of press-hardened 22MnB5 steel. Heat affected zones (HAZs) of dissimilar joint were composed of martensite and bainite. Softened zone (SZ) appeared at the HAZ of 22MnB5 steel due to tempering behavior. The hardness of SZ and QP980 steel base metal declined with microstructure evolution. The fracture occurred at QP980 base metal when dissimilar joints were produced at laser power of 1.8 and 2.0 kW. When laser power reached 2.2 kW, the tensile samples failed at SZ owing to the increased softening degree. With further increasing laser power, the weakest region was FZ since ferrite declined the whole joint strength. A better Erichsen value was obtained at 2.0 kW (4.04 mm), which was balanced by more crash energy absorption and better deformation resistance.
