Heat exchangers are made of metals because of their high heat conductivity and mechanical stability. Metal surfaces are inherently hydrophilic, leading to inefficient filmwise condensation. It is still a challenge to coat these metal surfaces with a durable, robust, and thin hydrophobic layer, which is required for efficient dropwise condensation. Here, we report the nonstructured and ultrathin (∼6 nm) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) brushes on copper that sustain high-performing dropwise condensation in high supersaturation. Due to the flexible hydrophobic siloxane polymer chains, the coating has low resistance to drop sliding and excellent chemical stability. The PDMS brushes can sustain dropwise condensation for up to ∼8 h during exposure to 111 °C saturated steam flowing at 3 m·s-1, with a 5-7 times higher heat transfer coefficient compared to filmwise condensation. The surface is self-cleaning and can reduce the level of bacterial attachment by 99%. This low-cost, facile, fluorine-free, and scalable method is suitable for a great variety of heat transfer applications.

Abstract Objective It is well known that female infertility is multifactorial. Therefore, we aimed to compare the effects of thyroid dysfunction, vitamin deficiency, and microelement deficiency in fertile and infertile patients. Materials and Methods Between May 1st, 2017, and April 1st, 2019, we conducted a retrospective case-control study with of 380 infertile and 346 pregnant patients (who normally fertile and able to conceive spontaneously). The fertile patients were selected among those who got pregnant spontaneously without treatment, had a term birth, and did not have systemic or obstetric diseases. The levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO), vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, ferritin, and zinc of both groups were compared. Results There was no difference between patients in the infertile and pregnant groups in terms of low normal and high serum T3 and T4 levels (p = 0.938; p > 0.05) respectively, nor in terms of normal and high anti-TPO levels (p = 0.182; p > 0.05) respectively. There was no significant difference regarding patients with low, insufficient, and sufficient vitamin D levels in the infertile and pregnant groups (p = 0.160; p >0.05) respectively. The levels of folic acid, ferritin, and zinc of the infertile group were significantly lower than those of the pregnant group. Conclusion The serum levels of folic acid, ferritin, and zinc in infertile patients presenting to our outpatient clinic were lower than those o the fertile patients.

Background and Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of adjuvant letrozole administration during ovarian stimulation using the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocol on treatment outcomes in women categorized into POSEIDON groups 3 and 4. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data from patients classified into POSEIDON groups 3 and 4 who underwent fresh embryo transfer subsequent to intracytoplasmic sperm injection following a GnRH antagonist stimulation protocol between January 2017 and December 2021. Patients were divided into two groups: the GnRH-LZ group, who received letrozole at a dosage of 5 mg/day for five consecutive days, and the GnRH-ant group, who did not receive adjuvant letrozole. The primary outcome measure of the study was a comparative analysis of live birth rates between the two groups. Results: A total of 449 patients were deemed suitable for final analysis and were allocated into two groups: 281 patients in the GnRH-ant group and 168 patients in the GnRH-LZ group. Live birth rates were found to be comparable in both groups (11% vs. 9%, p = 0.497). Letrozole administration significantly reduced the total amount of gonadotropins required (2606.2 ± 1284.5 vs. 3097.8 ± 1073.3, p < 0.001), the duration of ovarian stimulation (11.2 ± 3.9 vs. 10.2 ± 3, p = 0.005), and the serum peak estradiol concentration (901.4 ± 599.6 vs. 463.8 ± 312.3, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Adjuvant letrozole administration did not demonstrate a significant impact on live birth rates among women categorized into POSEIDON groups 3 and 4. However, this approach may offer potential cost reductions by diminishing the necessity for exogenous gonadotropins and shortening the duration of ovarian stimulation.

Talc is widely used in the automotive industry as a primary reinforcement in part manufacturing. However, its relatively high density, low impact strength, and difficulty in recycling pose challenges. The present study investigates the utilization of graphene grown on talc derived from waste polypropylene (PP) and graphene nanoplatelet obtained from waste tires by recycling and upcycling processes to be used as reinforcing agents in thermoplastic processing by keeping mechanical integrity and part performance properties the same compared to the part used in serial production. The whole value chain was examined by developing compound formulation, scaling up with a high shear mixer, and injection molding of the selected exterior part of the glass front grill with its part performance tests with the real‐case thermal and structural finite element analysis. Regarding the mechanical performance analysis, the developed compound formulation having 9 wt% micron scale talc with graphene nanoparticles and hybrid additive yielded substantial enhancements of 32% and 22% in flexural and tensile strength, respectively, in the homopolymer polypropylene (HomoPP) matrix by achieving 10% weight reduction. With a systematic life cycle assessment study, CO2 reduction was provided by 55% for the selected part by replacing virgin HomoPP with mechanically recycled waste PP originally unknown. Despite the advances in controlled ovarian stimulation (COS), management of a subgroup of poor ovarian responderpatients may still be challenging. We describe a feasible and simplified protocol, namely the STOP-START protocol,for poor responders defined as Patient-Oriented Strategies Encompassing Individualize D Oocyte Number (POSEIDON)groups 3 and 4, who are unresponsive to COS with maximum dose gonadotrophins. Data of 11 women unresponsiveto COS were reviewed. Mean age of the patients was 36.5 ± 6.0 years. Unresponsiveness was defined as no follicular growth >9 mm and/or estradiol level less than 40 pg/ml after a week of recombinant follicle stimulating hormone (rFSH, 225-300 IU) administration. In that case, COS was stopped and each woman underwent weekly ultrasound assessment to catch a secondary follicular growth. All women showed at least one follicular growth within five to 20 days. Six women (54.5%) had spontaneous follicular growth and the other five required ovarian stimulation. At least one oocyte was retrieved from each one of seven patients (63.6%). The mean number of oocytes retrieved was 1.6 ± 1.4 and five women (45.5%) had at least one grade A embryo. Among all, two women became pregnant successfully and both gave live births (18.2%). In conclusion, STOP-START protocol may potentially be an effective, feasible, and time-saving management option for POSEIDON group 3/4 poor responders who are unresponsive to standard COS treatment with maximum dose gonadotrophins.
