Summary Ferroelectrics with switchable spontaneous polarization have taken a dominant position as the nonlinear optical candidates, of which birefringence is an essential merit to optical devices. Despite the increasing advance of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics, it remains a great challenge to control and tune their birefringence, thus hindering their practical optical applications. Here, we present a 2D trilayered hybrid perovskite-type ferroelectric obtained by 3D-to-2D dimensional tailoring, [(CH3)2CH(CH2)2NH3]2(CH3NH3)2Pb3Cl10, showing biaxial polarizations of ∼5 μC/cm2 and a relatively wide optical band gap. The intrinsic 2D architecture results in highly anisotropic principal refractive indices, namely, the optical birefringence. Interestingly, its birefringence can be reversibly switched through ferroelectric-to-paraelectric symmetry breaking. The birefringence tuning is further established by virtue of pretransitional modulation of ferroelectricity, exhibiting unusual polarization-dependent behaviors. In our judgment, this study on the polarization-dependent birefringence of hybrid perovskite ferroelectrics will provide a new pathway toward modulating nonlinear optical properties for smart devices.

Atomically thin two‐dimensional (2D) bismuth oxychalcogenides (Bi2O2X, X = S, Se, Te) have recently attracted extensive attention in the material research community due to their unique structure, outstanding long‐term ambient stability, and high carrier mobility, which enable them as promising candidates for high‐performance electronic and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we present a comprehensive review on the recent advances of 2D bismuth oxychalcogenides research. We start with an introduction of their fundamental properties including crystal structure and electronic band structure. Next, we summarize the common techniques for synthesizing these 2D structures with high crystallinity and large lateral size. Furthermore, we elaborate on their device applications including transistors, artificial synapses, optical switch and photodetectors. The last but not the least, we summarize the existing challenges and prospects for this emerging 2D bismuth oxychalcogenides field.

Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites with the Ruddlesden-Popper lattice (A′)2(A)n−1MnX3n+1 are emerging as the promising optoelectronic candidates, both the inorganic and organic ingredients of which can be tailored to modulate the physical properties. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of 2D multilayered motifs with the A-site large-size cations occupying perovskite cavities. Here, by rational mixed-cation alloying, we present a new 2D hybrid perovskite, (4-TFBMA)2(DMA)Pb2I7 (1), in which the secondary cation of CH3NH2CH3+ (DMA) is located inside the perovskite cage while the aromatic 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzylammonium (4-TFBMA) cation acts as a spacer moiety. Benefiting from the quantum structure of alternating organic spacers and inorganic networks, crystal-array detectors of 1 show fascinating in-plane photodetection responses of large detectivity (−2.95 × 1012 Jones) and responsivity (−1.97 A W−1), comparable to those of some inorganic 2D counterparts. In addition, a fast response rate (−264 µs) and a low dark current are also realized, related to the high crystalline quality and suppression of the hopping barrier due to the insulating organic spacing layers. This result sheds light on the further exploration of new 2D hybrid perovskites toward high-performance photodetector applications.

Two-dimensional (2D) ternary materials have sprung up in a broad variety of optoelectronic applications due to their robust degree of freedom to design the physical properties of the materials through adjusting the stoichiometric ratio. However, the controlled growth of high-quality 2D ternary materials with good chemical stoichiometry remains challenging, which severely impedes their further development and future device applications. Herein, we synthesize ternary Bi2Te2Se (BTS) flakes with a thickness down to 4 nm and a lateral dimension about 60 μm by an atmospheric-pressure solid source thermal evaporation method on a mica substrate. The phonon vibration and electrical transportation of 2D BTS are respectively investigated by temperature-dependent Raman spectrum and conductivity measurements. Furthermore, the photodetector based on 2D BTS exhibits excellent performance with a high light on/off ratio of 1300 (365 nm), a wide spectral response range from 365 to 980 nm, and an ultra-fast response speed up to 2 μs. In addition, its electrical and photoelectric properties can be modulated by the gate voltage, offering an improved infrared responsivity to 2.74 A W−1 and an on/off ratio of 2266 under 980 nm. This work introduces an effective approach to obtain 2D BTS flakes and demonstrates their excellent prospects in optoelectronics.

As an indispensable type of pesticide, fungicides have been somewhat neglected compared to insecticides and herbicides. Heavy fungicide application in agricultural regions may generate downstream ecological concerns via in-stream transport, and the reservoir complicates the process. Monitoring fungicide exposure and exploring reservoir effect on fungicide transport is the key to develop the downstream strategies of agricultural diffusion pollution control. Here, we investigated the exposure, spatiotemporal dynamics, and ecological risk of fungicides in a reservoir-regulated agricultural basin, located in the middle of the Yangtze River Basin, China. Seven fungicides were preliminarily identified and exhibited high detection frequencies (85 %) in subsequent quantification of water samples from three sampling activities. The total concentration of fungicides ranged from 2.47 to 560.29 ng/L, 28.35 to 274.69 ng/L, and 13.61 to 146.968 ng/L in April, September, and November, respectively. Overall, the contamination levels of fungicides were in the ascending order of April November September. The spatial distribution of fungicides was closely associated with the dense of cultivated land, supporting its agricultural source. Furthermore, the reservoir plays a retention role in fungicides, alleviating ecological pressure downstream during the water storage period. Yet, due to the alternation of "source" and "sink" function of the reservoir, the contribution of Zijiang River to the fungicide load in the Yangtze River Basin still needs further attention. Although there is no acute risk posed by fungicides, even in the high-exposure scenario, the chronic ecological risk could not be ignored. Agricultural intensive regions, coupled with the reservoir, provide rather substantial chronic ecological concerns. Carbendazim has been designated as a priority pollutant that contributes significantly to cumulative chronic risk. Thus, we emphasize strengthening the supervision of fungicides in surface water and rationally restricting the use of carbendazim in agricultural operations.

Metal-free antiferroelectric materials are holding a promise for energy storage application, owing to their unique merits of wearability, environmental friendliness, and structure tunability. Despite receiving great interests, metal-free antiferroelectrics are quite limited and it is a challenge to acquire new soft antiferroelectric candidates. Here, we have successfully exploited binary CMBrxI1-x and CMBrxCl1-x solid solution as single crystals (0 ≤ x ≤ 1, where CM is cyclohexylmethylammonium). A molecule-level modification can effectively enhance Curie temperature. Emphatically, the binary CM-chloride salt shows the highest antiferroelectric-to-paraelectric Curie temperature of ~453 K among the known molecular antiferroelectrics. Its characteristic double electrical hysteresis loops provide a large electric polarization up to ~11.4 μC/cm2, which endows notable energy storage behaviors. To our best knowledge, this work provides an effective solid-solution methodology to the targeted design of new metal-free antiferroelectric candidates toward biocompatible energy storage devices.

Under the environmental changes associated with mine tributaries entering mainstream rivers, differences in the distributions and migration behaviors of metal(loid)s can be found, but the behavior of antimony (Sb) is still poorly understood in this regard. We analyzed the occurrence, distribution, migration, and influencing factors of the Sb concentration in the water body of the Zijiang River (ZR) around a superlarge Sb deposit zone. The total Sb concentrations were 1.45-15.66 μg/L, 3.16-133.63 mg/kg, and 0.83-41.82 μg/L in the ZR surface waters, sediments, and pore waters, respectively; Sb(V) was the predominant form of Sb found in the surface waters. Mining and smelting were the main sources of Sb in the ZR. Spatially, the Sb concentration showed a decreasing trend from the tributaries to the ZR mainstream. In the ZR, the surface-water Sb concentration showed an increasing trend from the upstream to the downstream, while in the sediments and pore waters, the midstream Sb concentrations were higher than the upstream and downstream concentrations; this finding was related to the sediment retention and accumulation behaviors of reservoirs and dams resulting in the secondary release of Sb in sediments. Sb tended to be bound to the solid phase, dominated by amorphous iron (Fe)/aluminum (Al) oxides and calcium in sediments. This study highlights that, based on current Sb migration patterns, the accumulation of sediments carried by tributaries near Sb mines in the midstream ZR and the Sb pollution caused by sediment release will be long-term, and the related environmental consequences need to be further predicted.

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, benefiting from their natural anisotropy of quantum-well motifs and optical properties, have shown remarkable polarization-dependent responses superior to the 3D counterparts. Here, for the first time, multiwavelength polarization-sensitive detectors were fabricated by using single crystals of a guanidine-based 2D hybrid perovskite, (BA)2 (GA)Pb2 I7 (where BA+ is n-butylammonium and GA+ is guanidium). Its unique 2D quantum-well structure results in strong crystallographic-dependence of optical absorption. Strikingly, our crystal-based photodetector exhibits a prominent photocurrent dichroic ratio (Imax /Imin ) of ∼2.2 at 520 nm, higher than the typical 2D inorganic materials (GeSe, ∼1.09, PdSe2 , ∼1.8). In addition, notable dichroic ratios of 1.29 and 1.23 at 405 nm and 637 nm are also created for the multiwavelength polarized-light detection. The prominent detecting performances, including low dark current (1.6×10-11 A), considerable on/off ratio (∼2×103 ), high photodetectivity (∼3.3×1011 Jones) and responsivity (∼12.01 mA W-1 ), make (BA)2 (GA)Pb2 I7 a promising candidate for polarized-light detection. This work sheds light on the rational engineering of new 2D hybrid perovskites for the high-performance optoelectronic device applications.

High-Curie-temperature (Tc) ferroelectrics have exhibited broad applications in optoelectronic devices. Recently, two-dimensional multilayered perovskite ferroelectrics with excellent photoelectric attributes are attracting increasing interest as new systems of photoferroelectrics. However, the effective tuning of the Tc value of a multilayered perovskite photoferroelectric system still remains a huge challenge. Here, by a halogen substitution strategy to introduce bromine atoms on n-propylamine cations, the hybrid perovskite photoferroelectric (3-bromopropylaminium)2(formamidinium)Pb2Br7 (BFPB) with a high Tc value (348.5 K) was obtained. It is notable that BFPB adopts a two-dimensional bilayered inorganic framework, with tight linking to the organic cation by C-Br···Br-Pb halogen···halogen interactions and N-H···Br hydrogen bonds. Intriguingly, in comparison with the prototypical compound (n-propylaminium)2(formamidinium)Pb2Br7, a remarkable augmentation of 85.2 K in the resulting Tc value of BFPB is clearly observed, which further broadens the temperature range of its application. In combination with the remarkable ferroelectric and semiconducting attributes, the reversible bulk photovoltaic effect was realized in single crystals of BFPB. This finding can not only enhance the hybrid perovskite ferroelectric family but also further promote the photoelectric application of ferroelectrics.

Since the toxicity of Sb(III) is 10 times as high as that of Sb(V) in the environment, it is urgent to find a way to cut down Sb(III). β-FeOOH-modified biochar (β-FeOOH/BC) was prepared and used to remove Sb(III). The characterization results suggested that oxygen-containing functional groups formed on β-FeOOH/BC, which increased the Sb(III) removal efficiency. Even under complex water matrix conditions, the outstanding adsorption performance of β-FeOOH/BC for Sb(III) was obtained. The adsorption reaction rapidly reached a high removal efficiency within 5 min and approached adsorption equilibrium in about 6 h. The adsorption process was fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetics. Through a functional unit-transmutation strategy, a fatigue-free layered hybrid perovskite ferroelectric (C6H5CH2NH3)(2)CsPb2Br7 (BCPB) has been developed, which demonstrates stable spontaneous polarization (P-s) of 6.5 mu C cm(-2) and high Curie temperature up to 425 K. Meanwhile, BCPB shows splendid bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) properties with noticeable zero-bias photocurrent density (5 mu A cm(-2)), and high on/off switching ratio of current (over 3x10(5)); these merits even overmatch the most known ferroelectric semiconductor BiFeO3. The unique structure with self-regulated net electrical charged layers gives rise to the fatigue-free feature of P-s and BPVE (no significant fatigue after 10(8) polarity switching cycles), promoting the potential applications of BCPB in photovoltaic non-volatile memories. This work offers an efficient approach for exploring fatigue-free semiconducting ferroelectrics as well as excavates their further applications in next-generation electronic devices.

Children (n = 240) between the ages of 2 and 17 years were randomly selected from three cities in China. The total amount of soil and dust (SD) on their hands was measured and ranged from 3.50–187.39 mg (median = 19.49 mg). We screened for seven elements (Ce, V, Y, Al, Ba, Sc, and Mn), and Ce levels were used to calculate hand SD by variability and soil elements. The main factors affecting SD amount were location and age group, as identified using a conditional inference tree. Hand SD and the hand SD intake rate were highest in Gansu Province, followed by Guangdong and Hubei provinces, respectively. Hand SD and the hand SD intake rate were highest among children in primary school, followed by kindergarten and secondary school, respectively. The hand SD intake rate of the three typical areas was 11.9 mg/d, which was about 26.6% of the children’s soil intake rate (44.8 mg/d), indicating that hand-to-mouth contact is not the main route for children’s soil intake in the three areas of China.

Polar hybrid perovskites have been explored for self-powered photodetection benefitting from prominent transport of photo-induced carriers and the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE). However, these self-powered photodetection ranges are relatively narrow depending on their intrinsic wide bandgaps (>2.08 eV), and the realization of broad-spectrum self-powered photodetection is still a difficult task. Herein, we successfully obtained a polar multilayered perovskite, (I-BA)2(MA)2Pb3I10 (IMP, MA+ = methylammonium and I-BA+ = 4-iodobutylammonium), via rational dimension reduction of CH3NH3PbI3. It features the narrowest bandgap of 1.71 eV in a BPV material. As a consequence, the integration of narrow bandgap and BPVE causes the self-powered photodetection to extend to 724 nm for IMP, and a repeatable photovoltaic current reaching 1.0 μA cm−2 is acquired with a high “on/off” ratio of ∼103 and photodetectivity (∼109 Jones) at zero bias. This innovative research provides a foothold for adjusting the physical properties of hybrid perovskites and will expand their potential for self-powered broad-spectrum detection., A polar hybrid perovskite with a wide-spectrum absorption extending to 724 nm was obtained . Benefitting from the narrow bandgap and bulk photovoltaic effects, self-powered broad-spectrum photodetection was achieved in hybrid perovskites.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials, in particular emerging 2D layered hybrid perovskites, have manifested excellent potential for polarization-sensitive photodetection recently due to their highly intrinsic anisotropy, characteristic quantum-well structure and intriguing semiconducting properties. However, most of the reported 2D hybrid perovskites still suffer from limited crystal dimensions or narrow spectral photoresponse to the polarized light. Herein, we have developed a new layered iodide perovskite (s-BA)2(MA)Pb2I7 (1, s-BA+ is sec-butylammonium and MA+ is methylammonium) through symmetry-reduction and halide remolding, which exhibits highly structural anisotropy and a narrow bandgap of 2.02 eV. Strikingly, centimeter-sized crystals with dimensions up to 19 × 19 × 3 mm3 can be obtained via temperature cooling method. Based on such large crystals, photodetectors were fabricated which manifest impressive response to polarized light with a large dichroism ratio of about 1.16, notable responsivity of 97.22 mA W−1 and considerable detectivity of 2.79 × 1011 Jones. This work offers a new candidate to the further exploration of highly anisotropic hybrid perovskites for extended spectral polarization-sensitive photodetection.
