This paper explores a new perspective on trade fairs, examining their expected impact on the sustainable development of the host city. To study this impact, the paper examines the annual fair of Thessaloniki, Greece, which has a long history and strong connection with the city. Methodologically, mix research method is used, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings challenge the focus of trade fairs' benefits in terms of sustainability on the economic aspect. Thessaloniki citizens believe that the fair contributes positively to sustainable urban development, possibly due to their emotional attachment with it and its crucial economic benefits. Stakeholder interviews, however, reveal concerns. Some attribute limitations to outdated fair infrastructure, claiming that a planned redevelopment could address sustainability issues. Others, more critical of the fair, argue that achieving truly balanced development is difficult within the existing mode of socio-economic organisation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the sustainable development approaches implemented by global trade fair organizers (TFOs). Six TFOs, including venue- and non-venue-bound organizers, were selected based on their revenue rankings. This study considers the environmental, social, and economic aspects of sustainability as major categories and segments them into 12 detailed items. The results indicate that most of the TFOs under study have a strong track record of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. However, strategies differ depending on TFOs' venue ownership. Non-venue-bound organizers focus on policies that can be implemented during events, whereas venue-bound organizers are likely to adopt strategies within the venue. This study has both theoretical and practical implications for TFOs striving to achieve global competitiveness by adopting sustainability strategies. This study contributes to the literature by considering comprehensive sustainability dimensions and provides insights for further research and policy development in the exhibition industry. Community-led development (CLD) represents a transformative approach empowering local communities to navigate global challenges and revive traditional crafts, ensuring sustainable development while safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. Within the jade industry, CLD not only promises economic advancement but also preserves cultural identity. Yet, research on its impact in this context remains limited, prompting this investigation. This qualitative study investigates how CLD initiatives empower jade artists, preserve cultural heritage, and foster international collaboration. Using in-depth analysis, findings reveal that initiatives in skills development, entrepreneurship, collective decision-making, and market access empower artists. However, scaling impacts necessitate further research and investment. Cultural preservation, intergenerational learning, community education, and partnerships with cultural institutions are pivotal for sustaining traditions. Facilitating international collaboration and market access is crucial, underscoring the need for supportive policies and resources to globalize artisanal economies. Key factors for empowering artists in jade art villages through CLD include skills development in traditional techniques and innovative design, entrepreneurship support via microfinance and mentorship, collective decision-making promoting fair trade, market access through fairs and online platforms, and cultural preservation fostering heritage continuity. Strategies for cultural heritage preservation focus on documentation, authentic design revival, community education, and collaboration with institutions. Networking, trade fairs, online marketing, cultural exchanges, and market research support enhance international collaboration and market access. The COVID-19 pandemic saw an increase in digitalization in various industries across the globe including the events sector, resulting in a shift in attention toward virtual exhibitions. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to assess the prospects and potential of virtual exhibitions from the exhibitors' perspective. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 151 exhibitors attending the Sanganai/Hlanganani World Tourism Expo held in Zimbabwe. Data was analyzed using frequency distribution, One-Way ANOVA and Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA). The major findings show that there is more preference for physical exhibitions, although there is recognition that virtual events can add value to the exhibition industry. However, considering that the respondents regard physical exhibitions as important and at the same time highlight the potential of virtual exhibitions, hybrid exhibitions become a viable option in the face of threats from future disruptions emanating from pandemics and natural disasters. According to the general consensus in academia, Ricardo's theory of international trade embodies the theory of comparative advantage. The principle of comparative advantage he proposed, based on the model of physical trade and employing comparative cost analysis, holds that comparative advantage rather than absolute advantage forms the basis of the international division of labor and of international trade, and is thus the negation of Smith's theory of absolute advantage. However, a complete examination of Ricardo's theory of international trade shows that the comparative advantage determined by Ricardo on the basis of comparative cost analysis is precisely the absolute advantage of intra-sector competition across countries in physical trade. Moreover, Ricardo also established a monetary model compatible with his understanding of physical trade. This monetary model, which has generally been ignored by academics, and especially by those adhering to the mainstream, i.e., the neoclassical theory of comparative advantage, is in line with the principle of absolute advantage. In particular, Ricardo emphasized the decisive role of exogenous technological progress in altering positions of advantage. The Fair Trade movement aims to provide producers and workers at the tail end of the value chain with secure working conditions and just incomes. However, the certification standards generated by these goals are often incompatible with the regional production systems. By comparing two Costa Rican banana farms––one Fair Trade, one conventional-my research reveals that Fair Trade regulations fail to account for the complexities of the structural issues that create and maintain precarity. This article shows that despite the movement's best intentions it is unsuccessful in controlling the application of its values as it is disconnected from the communities on the ground. Fair Trade's ideals become tainted locally because of pre-existing inequalities that shape social relations. I therefore specify that Fair Trade would benefit from integrating requirements specific to regional and national production processes––termed here "industry specific" standards. Haryana has a rich tradition of handicrafts. Traditional cloth toys are one of the most valuable handicrafts. The rural women of Haryana were expert in making variety of these toys. The most common toys were gindu (ball) gudia (doll), jhoonjhana (rattle), saikal (bicycle with a rider), bail (pair of bullocks, in khadar zone) or oont (a camel in bagar zone), baandar- baandri (pair of monkeys), ghora (horse rider), etc. This traditional art of making cloth toys is now extinct. The present study was an attempt to prove the potential of revival of traditional cloth toy crafts of Haryana. For this purpose the traditional stuffed toy bullock was modified to suit the needs and taste of potential contemporary users. The market potential of the modified toy bullock was got assessed by Indian as well as foreign people at trade fair, Delhi. The assessment was done on the basis of aesthetic appeal, utility, workmanship, uniqueness, colour combination, fabric and traditional value. This research explores the real-world impact of Geographical Indication (GI) registration on product holders at the New Town Hosto Shilpo Mela, an annual handicraft trade fair in Kolkata, India. Using a mixed methodology of doctrinal analysis and qualitative interviews with 60 GI product owners, the study examines the commercial behaviors and decision-making processes of registered GI holders. The findings reveal a nuanced landscape: while some sellers effectively exploit their GI status for premium pricing, others lack awareness of its potential, leading to inconsistent market outcomes. Notably, certain sellers experienced a paradoxical decline in sales when charging higher prices for GI-tagged items. The study highlights the need for improved consumer education, stricter regulations, and collaborative stakeholder efforts to enhance the commercial utility of GI products. It also underscores the broader socio-economic implications of GIs, particularly for marginalized communities. This study investigates evolving perceptions and preferences among exhibitors regarding trade fair formats, focusing on virtual, hybrid, and physical events. The aim is to understand how attitudes have shifted post-pandemic and the implications for future trade fair strategies. A longitudinal comparative analysis was conducted using survey data collected from exhibitors over two years. The analysis focused on evaluating perceptions of virtual, hybrid, and physical trade fairs, examining factors such as cost savings, technological barriers, health safety advantages, and interpersonal interactions. Findings indicate increasing recognition of cost and time-saving benefits in virtual formats. Despite technological improvements, challenges in interpersonal interactions persist. Interest in hybrid events is rising, but concerns exist about effectively combining physical and virtual advantages. Confidence in physical trade fairs is rebounding, especially among less COVID-affected exhibitors, suggesting a coexistence with virtual events rather than a complete replacement. Strategic flexibility is crucial to optimizing engagement across diverse preferences and capitalizing on emerging opportunities. The findings underscore the need for trade fair organizers to adapt their strategies to accommodate hybrid models effectively. Future research should delve deeper into specific factors influencing exhibitor satisfaction and engagement in hybrid environments, informing ongoing adaptations to the evolving trade fair landscape. A performance evaluation index system is built in this paper with four dimensions (service performance, sales performance, behavioral performance, and social performance) and 14 criteria considering the requirements of key stakeholders. The BWM‐CRITIC‐TOPSIS model is then developed for a comprehensive trade show performance evaluation. An illustrative application is carried out based on four trade shows held in Changsha, China, to demonstrate the validity and acceptability of the proposed evaluation index system and model. Findings indicate that social performance is assigned the highest weight coefficient: it is considered to be the essential criterion that constrains the performance level. The evaluation results show that the overall performance levels of the sampled trade shows increased from 2022 to 2023 and have gradually recovered from the COVID‐19 crisis. Their adaptability and flexibility in response to changing surroundings could be enhanced by meeting various stakeholders' expectations, which is also essential for improving their own resilience.
