Abstract

The fourfold degeneracy of the boron acceptor ground state in silicon, which is easily lifted by any symmetry breaking perturbation, allows for a strong inhomogeneous broadening of the boron-related electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) lines, e.g. by a random distribution of local strains. However, since EPR of boron acceptors in externally unstrained silicon was reported for the first time, neither the line shape nor the magnitude of the residual broadening observed in samples with high crystalline purity were compatible with the low concentrations of carbon and oxygen point defects, being the predominant source of random local strain. Adapting a theoretical model which has been applied to understand the acceptor ground state splitting in the absence of a magnetic field as an effect due to the presence of different silicon isotopes, we show that local fluctuations of the valence band edge due to different isotopic configurations in the vicinity of the boron acceptors can quantitatively account for all inhomogeneous broadening effects in high purity Si with a natural isotope composition. Our calculations show that such an isotopic perturbation also leads to a shift in the g-value of different boron-related resonances, which we could verify in our experiments. Abstract

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) linewidths of B acceptors in Si are found to reduce dramatically in isotopically purified 28Si single crystals. Moreover, extremely narrow substructures in the EPR spectra are visible corresponding to either an enhancement or a reduction of the absorbed microwave on resonance. The origin of the substructures is attributed to a combination of simultaneous double excitation and spin relaxation in the four level spin system of the acceptors. A spin population model is developed which qualitatively describes the experimental results., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In order to clarify tissue expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) in ‘green mice’ from a transgenic line having an EGFP cDNA under the control of a chicken beta-actin promoter and cytomegalovirus enhancer, we studied the expression of EGFP in various organs and tissues from these ‘green mice’ by immunohistochemistry with anti- EGFP antibody in conjunction with direct observation for EGFP fluorescence using confocal laser scanning microscopy. On immunohistochemical examination and on direct observation by confocal laser scanning microscopy, the level of EGFP expression varied among organs and tissues. EGFP expression was diffusely and strongly observed in the skin, pituitary, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, heart, gall bladder, pancreas, adrenals and urinary bladder. There was only sporadic and weak expression of EGFP in the epithelium of the trachea, bronchus of the lung, stratified squamous epithelium and gastric glands of the stomach, hepatic bile ducts of the liver, glomeruli and renal tubules of the kidney and endometrial glands of the uterus. Furthermore, EGFP was only demonstrated within the goblet and paneth cells in the colon and small intestine, the tall columnar cells in the ductus epididymis, and the leydig cells in the testis. In conclusion, our results show that EGFP is differentially expressed in organs and tissues of ‘green mice’, which indicates that ‘green mice’ may prove useful for research involving transplantation and tissue clonality.

Abstract

The OPERA neutrino detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS) was designed to perform the first detection of neutrino oscillations in appearance mode through the study of νμ→ ντ oscillations. The apparatus consists of an emulsion/lead target complemented by electronic detectors and it is placed in the high energy long-baseline CERN to LNGS beam (CNGS) 730 km away from the neutrino source. Runs with CNGS neutrinos were successfully carried out in 2007 and 2008 with the detector fully operational with its related facilities for the emulsion handling and analysis. Abstract

A TBM with a diameter of 8.3 m, the largest in Japan, was used to construct the 2.8 km headrace tunnel for the Takisato hydroelectric power project. Tunnelling was through Neogene sandstone and mudstone with some coal seams and Cretaceous shales and sandstones including conglomerate and tuffs. Very poor rock conditions were encountered in the Neogene mudstone, including fractured rocks and sections of sticky clay. Tunnel seismic profiling was carried out continuously and probe drilling was conducted where poor rock conditions were encountered. There were 14 zones in which some trouble occurred during excavation, only 6 of which had been identified in the preliminary exploration. Real-time monitoring was carried out of cutterhead torque, thrust force and penetration rate to identify ground conditions.
