Abstract The direct co-conversion of methane and carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals has been a longstanding scientific pursuit for carbon neutrality and combating climate change. Herein, we present a photo-driven chemical process that reforms these two major greenhouse gases together to generate green methanol and CO, two high-valued industrial chemicals. Isotopic labeling and control experiments indicate an oxygen-atom-graft occurs, wherein CO2 transfers one O into the C–H bond of CH4 via photo-activated interfacial catalysis with AuPd nanoparticles supported on GaN. The photoexcited AuPd/GaN interface effectively orchestrates the CH4 oxidation and the CO2 reduction producing 13.66 mmol g−1 of CH3OH yield over 10 h. This design provides a solid scientific basis for the photo-driven oxygen-atom-grafting process to be further extended to visible light region.

Single Alter shielded T-200BM3 weighing precipitation gauges are widely used in the measurement of all precipitation types (rainfall, snow and mixed precipitation) in unattended boreal or alpine regions, but their original datasets must be adjusted for undercatch errors caused by wind in snowy, windy and harsh environments. Therefore, previous researchers have developed many adjustment methods for all precipitation types on different time scales. However, which adjustment method is suitable for T-200BM3 weighing gauge wind-induced error adjustment in harsh alpine regions is unclear. Therefore, precipitation measurement intercomparison experiments were conducted in the Qilian Mountains from July 2018 to July 2021, and eight adjustment methods; were evaluated for wind-induced errors for daily, individual precipitation event, hourly, and half-hourly time scales. Z2004 outperformed the other adjustment methods in regard to the daily measurements of snow and mixed precipitation. Regarding individual snowfall events, M2007 reduced the absolute value of RMSE (bias) from 1.44 to 1.32 mm (0.77–0.24 mm) and could be recommended for snowfall event adjustment. K2017-1 attained a better performance than K2017-2 in regard to half-hourly snowfall and mixed sample adjustment and was more suitable for half-hourly snowfall sample adjustment. K2017-1 reduced the absolute value of bias from 0.07 to 0.00 mm for snowfall. Finally, Z2004, M2007, and K2017-1 yielded better adjustment results for the daily accumulation precipitation amount (>2 mm d−1), individual snowfall events (>2 mm per event), and half-hourly accumulation snowfall or mixed samples (>1 mm 30 min−1), respectively. However, further intercomparison in different climate regions is needed for trace precipitation samples.

Abstract Alkanes are naturally abundant chemical building blocks that contain plentiful C(sp 3)-H bonds. While inert, the activation of C(sp 3)-H via hydrogen atom abstraction (HAT) stages an appealing approach to generate alkyl radicals. However, prevailing shortcomings include the excessive use of oxidants and alkanes that impede scope. We herein show the use of gallium nitride (GaN) as a non-toxic, recyclable, heterogeneous photocatalyst to enable alkyl C(sp 3 )-H in conjunction with the catalytic use of simple photosensitizer, benzophenone, to promote the desired alkyl radical generation. The dual photocatalytic cycle enables cross-dehydrogenative Minisci alkylation under mild and chemical oxidant-free conditions.

This abstract encapsulates the essential elements that define the foundation of such education. The primary goal of this research is to delineate the ten fundamental elements that constitute the framework for sustainable interior architectural education. This investigation draws upon Scopus-indexed papers published within the timeframe spanning from 2010 to 2023. Through a comprehensive analysis of these scholarly sources which contributed from 38 referred journals, this study aims to distill and define the key components that underpin the pedagogical approach to sustainable interior architecture. Sustainable Design Principles form the cornerstone, instilling the integration of environmental, economic, and social dimensions into design. Environmental Awareness is paramount, fostering a deep understanding of design’s ecological footprint. Sustainable Materials and Construction underscore responsible material choices and construction techniques. Integration of Renewable Energy and Life Cycle Assessment equips students to harness clean energy and assess long-term environmental impacts. Social and Cultural Considerations emphasize designing spaces that respect diverse communities. Indoor Environmental Quality prioritizes occupants’ health and well-being. Research and Innovation drive progress, fostering a culture of continuous improvement. An Interdisciplinary Approach encourages collaboration across disciplines. Professional Ethics and Responsibility ground future interior architects in integrity and accountability. These elements, woven into sustainable interior architectural education, empower graduates to create spaces that harmonize with the environment, enrich lives, and shape a more sustainable future.

Precipitation data is vital fundamental data for climate change. However, obtaining precise gauge-measured precipitation in high-altitude mountains is challenging, and the precipitation obtained from various gauge types at the same station may vary. To understand the differences in precipitation observations among the three commonly used gauges in China (Chinese Standard Precipitation Gauges (CSPG), Total Rain weighing Sensor (TRwS), and Geonor T-200B (T200B)) in high-altitude mountains and to recommend a stable and cost-effective weighing gauge, a precipitation intercomparison experiment was conducted at Hulu-1 station in the Qilian Mountains. The wind-induced error in measurement was corrected with the ‘universal’ transfer function recommended by the Word Meteorological Organization. The comparison results, adjusted for systematic errors, showed that the rain, snow and mixed precipitation of CSPG and TRwS equipped with the same octagonal vertical double fence shields (CSPGDF and TRwSDF) and single-Alter shields (CSPGs and TRwSs) were close, while the precipitation of Tretyakov-shielded T200B was notably higher than that of CSPGs and TRwSs. The average differences in annual and daily precipitation between CSPGDF and TRwSDF from 2017 to 2021 were 12.9 mm and 0.10 mm, respectively. The daily precipitation difference between CSPGs and TRwSs from April 2019–December 2021 was 0.10 mm, while the differences between T200Bs and CSPGs and TRwSs was 0.28 mm and 0.38 mm, respectively. The wind shield performance of Alter and Tretyakov was not much different at Hulu-1 site with low wind speed, thus the measurement principle of T200Bs was the primary cause of the high observations. Taking the corrected CSPGDF measurement as the standard, the dynamic loss of CSPGs was 17.6%, while that of CSPGUn was 55.6%, indicating that the single-Alter shield could effectively reduce the impact of wind on precipitation measurement. Considering the comparison results and the price difference of the instruments, it was recommended to use a single-Alter shielded TRwS gauge for precipitation observation in high-altitude mountains.

Summary: Herein, we present a protocol for the on-demand preparation of methanol and formic acid via selective photo-oxidation of methane with H2O and O2 catalyzed by GaN. The detailed photosyntheses of methanol or formic acid from CH4/H2O or CH4/H2O/O2 are described, respectively. In addition, we provide experimental details for the accurate quantifications of the final gas/liquid products and photoexcited oxygenated radicals. Regulation of AMPA receptor (AMPAR) expression is central to synaptic plasticity and brain function, but how these changes occur in vivo remains elusive. Here, we developed a method to longitudinally monitor the expression of synaptic AMPARs across multiple cortical layers in awake mice using two-photon imaging. We observed that baseline AMPAR expression in individual spines is highly dynamic with more dynamics in primary visual cortex (V1) layer 2/3 (L2/3) neurons than V1 L5 neurons. Visual deprivation through binocular enucleation induces a synapse-specific and depth-dependent change of synaptic AMPARs in V1 L2/3 neurons, wherein deep synapses are potentiated more than superficial synapses. The increase is specific to L2/3 neurons and absent on apical dendrites of L5 neurons, and is dependent on expression of the AMPAR-binding protein GRIP1. Our study demonstrates that specific neuronal connections, across cortical layers and even within individual neurons, respond uniquely to changes in sensory experience.

Modulation of synaptic strength through trafficking of AMPA receptors (AMPARs) is a fundamental mechanism underlying synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. However, the dynamics of AMPAR trafficking in vivo and its correlation with learning have not been resolved. Here, we used in vivo two-photon microscopy to visualize surface AMPARs in mouse cortex during the acquisition of a forelimb reaching task. Daily training leads to an increase in AMPAR levels at a subset of spatially clustered dendritic spines in the motor cortex. Surprisingly, we also observed increases in spine AMPAR levels in the visual cortex. There, synaptic potentiation depends on the availability of visual input during motor training, and optogenetic inhibition of visual cortex activity impairs task performance. These results indicate that motor learning induces widespread cortical synaptic potentiation by increasing the net trafficking of AMPARs into spines, including in non-motor brain regions.

The global discourse on sustainability has heightened the importance of integrating sustainable design principles into interior architecture education. However, the implementation of such education faces complex challenges. This investigation draws upon Scopus-indexed papers published within the timeframe spanning from 2009 to 2023. Through a comprehensive analysis of these scholarly sources which contributed from 32 referred journals, this study examines these challenges, aiming to provide insights and strategies for effective implementation of Sustainable Interior Architecture Education. A primary challenge is the lack of a structured approach, leading to fragmented learning experiences for students. The wide-ranging concepts within sustainable design, coupled with resistance to change and limited resources, further complicate integration efforts. Additionally, there is a lack of awareness among educators and students about the significance of sustainability in interior architecture, hindering motivation and understanding of sustainable practices. Evaluation methods also prove challenging, as traditional approaches may not adequately assess sustainable design principles. Pedagogical challenges arise from balancing fundamental design skills with sustainability teachings. Industry alignment and cultural variations further impact the implementation process. Summary: The direct and selective transformation of naturally abundant methane (CH4) into high-value-added oxygenates, e.g., methanol, ethanol, and formic acid, is one of the “Holy Grails” in chemistry and chemical productions. However, complex mixtures of products, often due to over-oxidations, make such transformations highly challenging. Herein, gallium nitride (GaN), a methane-active semiconductor, catalyzes the photooxidation of methane and empowers the fine-controlling of chemoselectivity toward methanol and formic acids, simply by regulating the O2 content in water. In contrast to previous methods, no overoxidation products (CO2 and CO) were observed in this process. Mechanistic investigations and the corresponding quantitative experiments indicated that the controllable generation of moderately reactive oxygen radicals (•OOH and •OH) in combination with the direct methane activation triggered by GaN is responsible for the highly selective reactivity and tunability through a photo-generated radical process.
