13. Solar Flare Prediction Model with Three Machine-Learning Algorithms Using Ultraviolet Brightening and Vector Magnetogram

Abstract

We developed a flare prediction model using machine learning, which is optimized to predict the maximum class of flares occurring in the following 24 h. Machine learning is used to devise algorithms that can learn from and make decisions on a huge amount of data. We used solar observation data during the period 2010-2015, such as vector magnetogram, ultraviolet (UV) emission, and soft X-ray emission taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite. We detected active regions from the full-disk magnetogram, from which 60 features were extracted with their time differentials, including magnetic neutral lines, the current helicity, the UV brightening, and the flare history. After standardizing the feature database, we fully shuffled and randomly separated it into two for training and testing. To investigate which algorithm is best for flare prediction, we compared three machine learning algorithms: the support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), and extremely randomized trees (ERT). The prediction score, the true skill statistic (TSS), was higher than 0.9 with a fully shuffled dataset, which is higher than that for human forecasts. It was found that k-NN has the highest performance among the three algorithms. The ranking of the feature importance showed that the previous flare activity is most effective, followed by the length of magnetic neutral lines, the unsigned magnetic flux, the area of UV brightening, and the time differentials of features over 24 h, all of which are strongly correlated with the flux emergence dynamics in an active region., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures

21. Predicting magic numbers of nuclei with semi-realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions

Abstract

Magic numbers are predicted in wide range of the nuclear chart by the self-consistent mean-field calculations with the M3Y-P6 and P7 semi-realistic $NN$ interactions. The magic numbers are identified by vanishing pair correlations in the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov regime. We also identify submagic numbers when energy gain due to the pairing is sufficiently small. It is found that the results with M3Y-P6 well correspond to the known data, apart from a few exceptions. For some of the magic or submagic numbers the prediction differs from that with the Gogny-D1S or D1M interaction. Roles of the tensor force and the spin-isospin channel originating from the one-pion exchange potential are investigated in the $Z$- or $N$-dependence of the shell gap., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in PTEP

Abstract

Applying the semi-realistic $NN$ interactions that include realistic tensor force to the Hartree-Fock calculations, we investigate tensor-force effects on the single-particle levels in the Ca isotopes. The semi-realistic interaction successfully describes the experimental difference between $\varepsilon(p1s_{1/2})$ and $\varepsilon(p0d_{3/2})$ (denoted by $\mathit{\Delta}\varepsilon_{13}$) both at $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca, confirming importance of the tensor force. The tensor force plays a role in the $N$-dependence of $\mathit{\Delta}\varepsilon_{13}$ also in neutron-rich Ca nuclei. While the $p1s_{1/2}$-$p0d_{3/2}$ inversion is predicted in heavier Ca nuclei as in $^{48}$Ca, it takes place only in $N\geq 46$, delayed by the tensor force. We further investigate possibility of proton bubble structure in Ar, which is suggested by the $p1s_{1/2}$-$p0d_{3/2}$ inversion in $^{48}$Ca and more neutron-rich Ca nuclei, by the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations. Even with the inversion at $^{48}$Ca the pair correlation prohibits prominent bubble distribution in $^{46}$Ar. Bubble in Ar is unlikely also near neutron drip line because either of unboundness or of deformation. However, $^{34}$Si remains a candidate for proton bubble structure, owing to large shell gap between $p1s_{1/2}$ and $p0d_{5/2}$., Comment: 5 pages, including 3 figures; to appear in PRC (Brief Report)

Abstract

Magnetic properties in the quasi-one-dimensional organic salt (TMTTF)2SbF6 are investigated by 13C NMR under pressures. Antiferromagnetic phase transition at ambient pressure (AFI) is confirmed. Charge-ordering is suppressed by pressure and is not observed under 8 kbar. For 5 < P < 20 kbar, a sharp spectrum and the rapid decrease of the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 were observed below about 4 K, attributed to a spin-gap transition. Above 20 kbar, extremely broadened spectrum and critical increase of 1/T1 were observed. This indicates that the system enters into another antiferromagnetic phase (AFII) under pressure. The slope of the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature T_AFII, dT_AFII/dP, is positive, while T_AFI decreases with pressure. Abstract

We investigate the transport properties of LixCoO2 thin films whose resistivities are nearly an order of magnitude lower than those of the bulk polycrystals. A metal-nonmetal transition occurs at ~0.8 in a biphasic domain, and the Seebeck coefficient (S) is drastically increased at ~140 K (= T*) with increasing the Li concentration to show a peak of magnitude ~120 \muV/K in the S-T curve of x = 0.87. We show that T* corresponds to a crossover temperature in the conduction, most likely reflecting the correlation-induced temperature dependence in the low-energy excitations.

37. Fatigue strength and stiffness degradation of the woven roving GFRP under compression-compression cyclic loading

Abstract

This study revealed compression-compression fatigue behavior of woven roving GFRP laminate used in civil structures. Both static compression test and compression-compression fatigue test were conducted. As a result, fatigue failure was observed even in the compression fatigue test. The S-N curve of compression fatigue was similar to those of tensile fatigue, but the compression fatigue test exhibited smaller fatigue strength than tension when fatigue failure occurred at small loading cycles. Moreover, the stiffness measured through the fatigue test revealed that stiffness decreased as the loading cycle increased. 39. A regime shift in surface temperature over the East Antarctic Plateau in the twentieth century

Abstract

In contrast to the Antarctic coastal region, there are only a few staffed weather stations in the remote plateau region. In particular, inland Dronning Maud Land (DML) on East Antarctic Plateau is one of the regions in which weather observations are the shortest and sparsest in the world. Several automatic weather stations (AWSs) have been installed since 1990s. However, owing to their remoteness and harsh environment, the missing observations occur frequently and these data gaps hinder the analysis of temperature variability and changes in the region. Here, we present complete 40-years long temperature records for Dome Fuji, Relay Station, and Mizuho in the inland DLM region, in which observations have been corrected, and gaps have been filled using the state-of-the-art global atmospheric reanalysis data. The records show the similar interannual variability among each station. A stacked annual temperature reveals a statistically significant warming trend since the late 1990s. The most rapid warming is observed during the austral spring. The springtime warming resulted from an increase of warm northerly winds associated with the enhanced cyclonic anomaly in the Weddell Sea. The circulation changes in the Weddell Sea is closely linked to the tropical-polar teleconnection. The impact of changes in tropical sea surface temperatures seem to extend not only to the Antarctic Peninsula and West Antarctica, but also to the East Antarctic Plateau., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)
