1D organic metal halide hybrids (OMHHs) exhibit strongly anisotropic optical properties, highly efficient light emission, and large Stokes shift, holding promise for novel photodetection and lighting applications. However, the fundamental mechanisms governing their unique optical properties and in particular the impacts of surface effects are not understood. Herein, 1D C4N2H14PbBr4 by polarization-dependent time-averaged and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy, as a function of photoexcitation energy, is investigated. Surprisingly, it is found that the emission under photoexcitation polarized parallel to the 1D metal halide chains can be either stronger or weaker than that under perpendicular polarization, depending on the excitation energy. The excitation-energy-dependent anisotropic emission is attributed to fast surface recombination, supported by first-principles calculations of optical absorption in this material. The fast surface recombination is directly confirmed by TRPL measurements, when the excitation is polarized parallel to the chains. The comprehensive studies provide a more complete picture for a deeper understanding of the optical anisotropy in 1D OMHHs.

Excitons are often given negative connotation in solar energy harvesting in part due to their presumed short diffusion lengths. We investigate exciton transport in single-crystal methylammonium lead tribromide (MAPbBr3) microribbons via spectrally, spatially, and temporally resolved photocurrent and photoluminescence measurements. Distinct peaks in the photocurrent spectra unambiguously confirm exciton formation and allow for accurate extraction of the low temperature exciton binding energy (39 meV). Photocurrent decays within a few μm at room temperature, while a gate-tunable long-range photocurrent component appears at lower temperatures (about 100 μm below 140 K). Carrier lifetimes of 1.2 μs or shorter exclude the possibility of the long decay length arising from slow trapped-carrier hopping. Free carrier diffusion is also an unlikely source of the highly nonlocal photocurrent, due to their small fraction at low temperatures. We attribute the long-distance transport to high-mobility excitons, which may open up new opportunities for novel exciton-based photovoltaic applications.

Objective To investigate the characteristics of gut microbiome and their associations with lymphocyte subsets and disease activity in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). Methods This study was a retrospective analysis. The subjects of the study were AS patients who were hospitalized in the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from December 2019 to June 2020, as well as gender- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs). The fecal samples were collected, and the V3-V4 variable regions of 16S rRNA gene of gut microbiome were sequenced for bioinformatics analysis. Peripheral venous blood was collected from AS patients to determine peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and disease activity indicators. Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the correlations between the relative abundances of gut microbiota and peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets as well as disease activity in AS patients. Results A total of 62 AS patients (11 with low disease activity, 26 with high disease activity, and 25 with extremely high disease activity) and 62 healthy people who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were enrolled. As for α-diversity, ACE and Chao1 indices were lower in AS than in HCs(P < 0.05). Bray curtis distance-based β-diversity analysis revealed significant difference in the microbial community between AS and HCs (P < 0.01). As for the composition of the gut microbiome, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla in the gut microbiota of both groups, but there were differences in the abundance of various bacteria at the phylum and genus levels. In Stamp analysis, fecal microbial communities in AS differed significantly from those in HCs, which were characterized by higher abundances of phylum Proteobacteria and Patescibacteria(all P < 0.05) and a lower abundance of phylum Firmicutes and Fusobacteriota (all P < 0.05). At the genus level, the abundances of Escherichia-Shigella, Klebsiella and Enterococcus were increased while those of Prevotella and Faecalibacterium were decreased in AS patients compared to HCs(all P < 0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that the relative abundances of Faecalibacterium, Ruminococcus and Klebsiella in AS patients were significantly positively correlated with disease activity or its related indicators(all P < 0.05). There were positive correlations between Agathobacter and T cell (r=0.302, P=0.017), CD4+T cell (r=0.310, P=0.014), B cell (r=0.292, P=0.021), Th2 cell (r=0.429, P < 0.001), Th17 cell (r=0.288, P=0.023), Streptococcus and B cell (r=0.270, P=0.034), Prevotella and Th1 cell (r=0.279, P=0.028), Th17 cell (r=0.262, P=0.040), CAG-352 and Th1 cell (r=0.283, P=0.030). There were negative correlations between Escherichia-Shigella and Th2 cell(r=-0.261, P=0.040), other Enterobacteriaceae and CD4+T cell (r=-0.255, P=0.046). Conclusions The diversity of gut microbiota is reduced in AS patients. The abundance of pathogenic bacteria in AS patients is increased, which is correlated with changes in peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets and disease activity. Dysbiosis may be involved in the occurrence and development of AS.

Nonvolatile organic field-effect transistor (OFET) memory devices have great potential for next-generation memory due to their advantages of low cost, light weight, mechanical flexibility and easy processing. However, addressing the issue of limited data storage capacity remains a critical challenge. In this study, we propose a multilevel nonvolatile OFET memory device featuring five-layer organic semiconductor heterostructures composed of pentacene and N,N′-ditridecylperylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarb-oxylic diimide (P13). The innovative semiconductor heterostructures exhibit quantum well-like characteristics, and efficiently function as charge trapping sites. These characteristics synergize with the charge trapping properties of the polystyrene (PS) layer, resulting in a significant enhancement of the device's charge storage capacity. The organic semiconductor heterostructure-based memory device demonstrates exceptional nonvolatile memory properties, including a large charge storage capacity (5.48 × 1012 cm−2), a high mobility (2.06 cm2 V−1 s−1), a high ON/OFF current ratio (105), and a long data retention (over 104 s). Moreover, a four-level data storage was achieved owing to the device's high charge capacity properties, significantly augmenting memory capacity. Simple Summary: Buffalo milk has a significantly greater fatty acid content, up to 11%, than cow's milk, making buffalo milk more suitable for dairy products such as cheese. Several factors affect the quantity and proportion of milk fatty acids, and among the intrinsic factors, breed is important. However, the role of breed is still not fully understood. It is known that gastrointestinal microbiota serve as a key factor in modulating the content of milk fatty acids, since breed affects the type of gastrointestinal microbiota and consequently the milk fatty acids (FA). Therefore, we used 16S rDNA sequencing to analyze the microbial causes of different milk fatty acids in two breeds of dairy buffaloes. The results showed that the abundance of fatty acids such as C18:3 and C18:2c9t11 in Murrah buffalo milk was associated with the abundance of bacteria such as Acetobacter and Ruminalococcus in the rumen, as well as bacteria such as UCG-005 in the feces. This experiment investigated gastrointestinal microbes' role in milk fatty acid differences between Murrah and Nili-Ravi buffaloes. After 30 days of a basal diet, rumen microbial diversity was similar, but Murrah buffaloes had greater partially unsaturated fatty acids like C18:2c9t11. Rumen bacteria like Acetobacter, Ruminococcus, and Prevotellaceae_YAB2003_group correlated positively with milk fatty acids C22:5n-6 and C18:3 in Murrah. Fecal microbial beta diversity differed, with UCG-005 and Prevolla positively correlated with C18:2c9t11 and C22:5n-6. The greater quantity of milk fatty acids C18:3, C18:2c9t11, and C22:5n-6 in Murrah milk was linked to rumen and fecal microbes. This suggests that gastrointestinal microbes like Acetobacter, Ruminococcus, and UCG_005 regulate milk fatty acid concentrations in buffaloes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. The termite fungus comb is an integral component of nests of termites, which are a global pest. Termite fungus comb polysaccharides (TFCPs) have been identified to possess antioxidant, anti-aging, and immune-enhancing properties. However, their physicochemical characteristics and their role in fighting diabetes have not been previously reported. In the current study, TFCPs were isolated and structurally characterized. The yield of TFCPs was determined to be 2.76%, and it was found to be composed of a diverse array of polysaccharides with varying molecular weights. The hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of TFCPs, as well as their potential mechanisms of action, were investigated in a T2D mouse model. The results demonstrated that oral administration of TFCPs could alleviate fasting blood glucose levels, insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and the dysfunction of pancreatic islets in T2D mice. In terms of mechanisms, the TFCPs enhanced hepatic glycogenesis and glycolysis while inhibiting gluconeogenesis. Additionally, the TFCPs suppressed hepatic de novo lipogenesis and promoted fatty acid oxidation. Furthermore, the TFCPs altered the composition of the gut microbiota in the T2D mice, increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Allobaculum and Faecalibaculum, while reducing the levels of pathogens like Mailhella and Acetatifactor. Overall, these findings suggest that TFCPs may exert anti-diabetic effects by regulating hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism and the composition of the gut microbiota.
