Abstract

Many physical phenomena involving mobile agents involve time-varying scalar fields, e.g., quadrotors that emit noise. As a consequence, agents can influence and can be influenced by various environmental factors such as noise. This paper delves into the challenges of controlling such agents, focusing on scenarios where we would like to prevent excessive accumulation of some quantity over select regions and extended trajectories. We use quadrotors that emit noise as a primary example, to regulate the trajectory of such agents in the presence of obstacles and noise emitted by the aerial vehicles themselves. First, we consider constraints that are defined over accumulated quantities, i.e functionals of the entire trajectory, as opposed to those that depend solely on the current state as in traditional Higher order Control Barrier Functions (HOCBF). Second, we propose a method to extend constraints from individual points to lines and sets by using efficient over-approximations. The efficacy of the implemented strategies is verified using simulations. Although we use quadrotors as an example, the same principles can equally apply to other scenarios, such as light emission microscopy or vehicle pollution dispersion. 2. MeerKAT and ALMA view of the AGAL045.804-0.356 clump

Abstract

This study presents a detailed analysis of the GAL045.804-0.356 massive star-forming clump. A high-angular resolution and sensitivity observations were conducted using MeerKAT at 1.28 GHz and ALMA interferometer at 1.3 mm. Two distinct centimetre radio continuum emissions (source A and source B) were identified within the clump. A comprehensive investigation was carried out on source A, the G45.804-0.355 star-forming region (SFR) due to its association with Extended Green Object (EGO), 6.7 GHz methanol maser and the spatial coincidence with the peak of the dust continuum emission at 870 $\mu$m. The ALMA observations revealed seven dense dust condensations (MM1 to MM7) in source A. The brightest ($S_{\rm \nu} \sim$ 87 mJy) and massive main dense core, MM1, was co-located with the 6.7 GHz methanol maser. Explorations into the kinematics revealed gas motions characterised by a velocity gradient across the MM1 core. Furthermore, molecular line emission showed the presence of an extended arm-like structure, with a physical size of 0.25 pc $\times$ 0.18 pc ($\sim$ 50000 au $\times$ 30000 au) at a distance of 7.3 kpc. Amongst these arms, two arms were prominently identified in both the dust continuum and some of the molecular lines. A blue-shifted absorption P-Cygni profile was seen in the H$_2$CO line spectrum. The findings of this study are both intriguing and new, utilising data from MeerKAT and ALMA to investigate the characteristics of the AGAL45 clump. The evidence of spiral arms, the compact nature of the EGO and $<$ 2 km s$^{-1}$ velocity gradient are all indicative of G45.804-0.355 being oriented face-on.

Abstract

We present the SARAO MeerKAT Galactic Plane Survey (SMGPS), a 1.3 GHz continuum survey of almost half of the Galactic Plane (251\deg $\le l \le$ 358\deg and 2\deg $\le l \le$ 61\deg at $|b| \le 1.5\deg $). SMGPS is the largest, most sensitive and highest angular resolution 1 GHz survey of the Plane yet carried out, with an angular resolution of 8" and a broadband RMS sensitivity of $\sim$10--20 $\mu$ Jy/beam. Here we describe the first publicly available data release from SMGPS which comprises data cubes of frequency-resolved images over 908--1656 MHz, power law fits to the images, and broadband zeroth moment integrated intensity images. A thorough assessment of the data quality and guidance for future usage of the data products are given. Finally, we discuss the tremendous potential of SMGPS by showcasing highlights of the Galactic and extragalactic science that it permits. These highlights include the discovery of a new population of non-thermal radio filaments; identification of new candidate supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae and planetary nebulae; improved radio/mid-IR classification of rare Luminous Blue Variables and discovery of associated extended radio nebulae; new radio stars identified by Bayesian cross-matching techniques; the realisation that many of the largest radio-quiet WISE HII region candidates are not true HII regions; and a large sample of previously undiscovered background HI galaxies in the Zone of Avoidance., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 13. Predictors of Growth Mindset among Ghanaian Classroom College of Education Teacher Trainees

Abstract

The study aimed to examine the important predictors of Ghanaian classroom Diploma in Basic Education teacher trainees' growth mindset toward student learning. Participants included a purposive sample of 328 (177 male and 151 female) second- and third-year teacher trainees in one college of education in the northern part of Ghana. The predictor variables were the type of program, year in program, age, sex, and marital status. The student learning subscale of the Physical Education and Sports Ability Survey (Sofo et al., 2016) served as the main data source. The items were adapted for the classroom setting. Most of the trainees had a growth mindset but with some fixed ideas for student learning (80.18%). Approximately 19.21% of the trainees had a strong growth mindset in student learning. The mean decreased Gini (MDG) values for the year in the program, program type, and marital status (married vs. single) showed that these predictors were important for student learning. A logistic regression analysis showed that type of program, year in program, and marital status were significant predictors of growth mindset for student learning. Trainees in the early childhood program were approximately seven times more likely to have a growth mindset regarding student learning compared to those in the primary education program. Trainees in their third year were approximately 145 times more likely to have a growth mindset regarding student learning compared to trainees in their second year. Single teacher trainees were approximately 213 times more likely to have a growth mindset regarding student learning compared to married teacher trainees. The study provides insights for teacher educators regarding the profiles and factors that promote the development of a growth mindset in teacher education settings in Ghana. 19. Few-femtosecond electronic and structural rearrangements of CH$_4^+$ driven by the Jahn-Teller effect

Abstract

The Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) is central to the understanding of the physical and chemical properties of a broad variety of molecules and materials. Whereas the manifestations of the JTE on stationary properties of matter are relatively well studied, the study of JTE-induced dynamics is still in its infancy, largely owing to its ultrafast and non-adiabatic nature. For example, the time scales reported for the distortion of CH$_4^+$ from the initial $T_{\rm d}$ geometry to a nominal $C_{\rm 2v}$ relaxed structure range from 1.85~fs over 10$\pm$2~fs to 20$\pm$7~fs. Here, by combining element-specific attosecond transient-absorption spectroscopy and quantum-dynamics simulations, we show that the initial electronic relaxation occurs within 5~fs and that the subsequent nuclear dynamics are dominated by the $Q_2$ scissoring and $Q_1$ symmetric stretching modes, which dephase in 41$\pm$10~fs and 13$\pm$3~fs, respectively. Significant structural relaxation is found to take place only along the e-symmetry $Q_2$ mode. These results demonstrate that CH$_4^+$ created by ionization of CH$_4$ is best thought of as a highly fluxional species that possesses a long-time-averaged vibrational distribution centered around a $D_{\rm 2d}$ structure. 20. Hypertension and diabetes control: faith-based centres offer a promise for expanding screening services and linkage to care in Ghana

Abstract

Abstract Background Hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are important contributors to noncommunicable disease related morbidity and mortality. Health systems could benefit from exploring the use of Faith-Based Centres (FBC) to screen and link suspected cases for further care in order to help achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3. The study investigated the role of faith-based screening for T2DM and hypertension and the linkage of cases to the healthcare system and examined the care cascade in the Kassena Nankana Districts of Northern Ghana. Methods We screened individuals from 6 FBCs for elevated blood pressure and hyperglycaemia. Suspected hypertension and T2DM cases were referred to health facilities for confirmation and subsequently followed them up for 3 months. We assessed the prevalence of behavioural and metabolic risk factors, including hypertension and T2DM, and the retention of referred cases in the healthcare system over follow up period. We further assessed levels of awareness, treatment and adequate control of hypertension and T2DM. Results A total of 631 participants were screened, (mean age 49 ± 16years, 73% female) from 6 Faith based Centres. More males than females reported smoking tobacco (14.5% vs. 0.7%) and been physically active (64.5% vs. 52.7%) while more females were obese (29.6 kg/m2 vs. 14.5 kg/m2) and had a higher mean waist circumference (89.0 cm IQR 75-116 cm vs. 84.2 cm IQR 72–107 cm), hip circumference (101.5 ± 10.6 cm vs. 96.4 ± 8.6 cm) and waist-to-hip ratio (0.86 ± 0.1 cm vs. 0.87 ± 0.1 cm) than males. The prevalence of confirmed hypertension and T2DM was 27.9% and 3.5% respectively with no observed sex differences. We observed deficits in the hypertension and T2DM care cascade with reported low awareness, treatment and uncontrolled levels. A 3-month follow up showed a retention in care of 100% in month one and 94.9% in the third month. There was an increase in treatment (39.4% in month-1 and 82.8% in month-3) and control (26.3% in month-1 and 76.3% in month-3) of hypertension and T2DM combined. Conclusion Faith-based centres have the potential to enhance the screening, linkage to the healthcare system, and management of hypertension and T2DM. This improvement over the routine system could lead to earlier diagnoses, a reduction in complications, and decreased premature mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Consequently, these efforts would contribute significantly to achieving SDG 3.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction In Ghana, access to health care is impeded mostly by financial capital. The National Health Insurance (NHIS) rolled out in 2003 was an attempt to remove cost as a barrier and help bridge this gap in health access. Despite the benefits, enrolment and use have been low. Hence a need to assess the knowledge, access and satisfaction of pregnant women on the use of NHIS to access healthcare. Materials and methods The study employed a facility-based descriptive cross-sectional study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from a total of 387 pregnant women using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected to gain an insight into the knowledge, accessibility and satisfaction level of pregnant women on the usage of NHIS. Data was analyzed using Stata version 17.0 and results were presented in frequency tables. Results Overall, most of the pregnant women had a good knowledge of 228 (67.5%) and a high accessibility of 279 (82.5%) to using NHIS use it in accessing healthcare. Whilst for satisfaction, 311 (92.01%) said they were satisfied with the services and would prefer the use of NHIS to out-of-pocket payment. Conclusion In the current study the level of knowledge, accessibility, and satisfaction of NHIS is high. However, to sustain this gain, a multidimensional approach to community education should be intensified.

Abstract

Abstract Background Persons with disabilities (PwDs) experience various adverse sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes. However, there is a paucity of evidence on the strategies to improve their SRH outcomes. This study, therefore, used a pluralistic approach to explore PwDs and healthcare providers’ (HPs) perspectives on how to improve the SRH of PwDs in Ghana. Methods In-depth interviews were conducted with 62 purposively selected stakeholders (37 PwDs and 25 HPs) in the Kumasi Metropolis and Offinso North District. The data was subjected to reflexive thematic analysis. Results Six major themes were generated from the data: Training for disability-sensitive and inclusive healthcare, Healthcare inclusivity – ‘nothing about us, without us’, Raising awareness for accessibility and equity, Impactful continuous monitoring and evaluation, Vital empowerment for self-reliance and Educating for disability-inclusive healthcare environment. These recommendations were synthesised to develop the THRIVE model–a comprehensive data driven framework from stakeholders that emphasises the importance of factors such as Training for disability-sensitive and inclusive healthcare, Healthcare inclusivity – ‘nothing about us, without us’, Raising awareness for accessibility and equity, Impactful continuous monitoring and evaluation, Vital empowerment for self-reliance and Enforcement of physical accessibility to improve their SRH outcomes. Conclusion Using the evidence based THRIVE model could facilitate the development and strengthening of existing interventions and policies including the disability Act 715 to improve the SRH access and outcomes of PwDs in Ghana and other low-and middle-income countries.

Abstract

Abstract Background Medical education offers the foundational base for future healthcare professionals, with basic sciences playing a pivotal role in providing essential knowledge and skills for clinical practice. However, the long-term retention and application of this knowledge in clinical practice remain a significant challenge. This systematic review synthesised global evidence from diverse studies on the short / long-term retention and clinical application of basic sciences among medical doctors. Methods A comprehensive search was conducted across six databases, including Web of Science, Scopus, Medline, CINAHL, Emcare, and Informit. The review included studies that encompassed a variety of study designs, participant groups, and educational interventions. The Quality Assessment with Diverse Studies (QuADS) tool was utilised to assess the quality of the reviewed studies. Results A total of 10 studies were included in the review. The findings revealed that rehearsals significantly optimise the retention of basic science knowledge among medical practitioners. Retention varied by discipline, with medical practitioners retaining more knowledge in anatomy (mean scores ranging from 45.0 to 82.9%), while microbiology had the lowest retention score (39.1%). Factors influencing retention included age, gender, and curriculum type. Educational interventions such as targeted courses, integration of basic sciences with clinical skills, generative retrieval and continuous quality improvement in the curriculum were found to enhance both knowledge retention and clinical reasoning. The concept of ‘encapsulated knowledge’ demonstrates that integrated basic science knowledge helps in synthesising clinical presentations, reducing the need for detailed recall as clinical experience increases. The reviewed studies primarily involved interns and surgeons, leaving a significant gap in research for specialties like internal medicine and primary care/ general practice. Conclusion Detailed retention of basic science knowledge may diminish over time; however, the conceptual framework remains essential for ongoing learning and clinical reasoning. This review’s findings highlight the need for specialised educational interventions to improve long-term retention. Continuous professional development and targeted educational techniques are vital for maintaining clinical competence and applying basic science knowledge effectively throughout a medical career. Further research is needed to address gaps in specialty-specific knowledge application and the impact of different instructional methods.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Risky behaviours, including tobacco use, are highly prevalent among adolescents worldwide. Although these behaviours are largely influenced by various sociodemographic factors, including sex, there is a paucity of regionally representative literature on the sex-related inequalities in cigarette smoking among adolescents in Africa. This study examined the sex-based disparities in current cigarette smoking among adolescents aged 13–15 years in Africa. Methods The present study employed a secondary analysis of nationally representative data on 45 African countries obtained from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey, accessible through the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Health Observatory. We used the online version of the WHO Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (HEAT) to generate the results. Results The prevalence of current cigarette smoking among the adolescents surveyed ranged from 1.6% in Eritrea to 10.4% in Mali among the low-income countries, from 1.3% in Tanzania to 13.1% in Mauritania among the lower-middle-income countries, from 5.2% in Gabon to 15.3% in Mauritius among the upper-middle-income countries, and 14.7% in Seychelles, the only high-income country in the study. The absolute summary measure (D) showed diverse sex-related disparities in the burden of current cigarette smoking among adolescents across the sub-regions. In all countries surveyed, the prevalence of cigarette smoking was higher among male adolescents compared to females, except in Liberia and Mozambique, where female adolescents bore a more significant burden than their male counterparts. Furthermore, male adolescents were more burdened with high cigarette smoking prevalence than females in low-income countries such as Mali, Madagascar, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and The Gambia, where such disparities were most pronounced. Meanwhile, we found less disparity in the burden of cigarette smoking between male and female adolescents in most of the lower and upper-middle-income countries surveyed. Conclusion This study sheds light on the sex-based inequalities in the prevalence of current cigarette smoking among adolescents in Africa. In contrast to female adolescents, male adolescents bear a greater burden of current cigarette smoking. The burden of cigarette smoking is most pronounced in low-income countries such as Mali, Madagascar, Guinea, Burkina Faso, and The Gambia. Conversely, in most of the lower and upper-middle-income countries surveyed, the burdens of current cigarette smoking among male and female adolescents were found to be less disparate. Consequently, cigarette smoking prevention programmes and strategies must be implemented in all African nations. There is also the need to intensify interventions aimed at altering the smoking behaviour of male adolescents. Policymakers can develop and implement evidence-based interventions to address the burden of cigarette smoking among the adolescents. Finally, existing policies and programmes addressing adolescents' cigarette smoking should be re-assessed and strengthened to achieve their objectives.

This study examines inequalities in ANC attendance in Benin, disaggregated by women’s age, educational level, economic status, place of residence, region of residence, and the extent to which they have changed over time. Methods Three rounds of the Benin Demographic and Health Surveys (2006, 2011–12, and 2017–18) were analyzed to examine inequalities in ANC coverage. An exploratory descriptive approach was adopted for the analysis. Simple [difference (D) and ratio (R)] and complex [population attributable risk (PAR) and population attributable fraction (PAF)] measures of inequalities were computed using the World Health Organization’s Health Equity Assessment Toolkit (WHO’s HEAT) online platform. The measures were computed separately for each of the three surveys, and their estimates were compared. Results The findings revealed an 8.4% decline in at least four ANC visits between 2006 and 2017–18. The decline occurred irrespective of age, educational status, economic status, place of residence, and region. Region-related inequalities were the largest and increased slightly between 2006 (D = 54.6; R = 2.6; PAF = 47.8, PAR = 29.0) and 2017–18 (D = 55.8; R = 3.1; PAF = 57.2, PAR = 29.8). Education (2006: D = 31.3, R = 1.6, PAF = 40.5, PAR = 24.5; 2017–18: D = 25.2, R = 1.6, PAF = 34.9, PAR = 18.1) and rural-urban (2006: D = 16.8, R = 1.3, PAF = 17.8, PAR = 10.8; 2017–18: D = 11.2, R = 1.2, PAF = 13.1, PAR = 6.8) inequalities reduced while economic status inequalities did not improve (2006: D = 48, R = 2.2, PAF = 44.5, PAR = 26.9; 2017–18: D = 43.9, R = 2.4, PAF = 45.0, PAR = 23.4). Age inequalities were very minimal. Conclusion ANC inequalities remain deeply ingrained in Benin. Addressing their varying levels requires comprehensive strategies that encompass both supply—and demand-side interventions, focusing on reaching uneducated women in the poorest households and those residing in rural areas and Atacora.

31. Mathematical analysis of the role of host-to-host transmission of Maize Streak Virus Disease with Atangana-Baleanu derivative

Abstract

AbstractIn this article a deterministic model for Maize Streak Virus Disease (MSVD) using a fractional-order differential equation with the Atangana-Baleanu Caputo-type operator is developed. Focusing on the role of host-to-host transmission, the it is shown that the presence and stability of equilibria depends on maize field carrying capacity and half-saturation constant of susceptible maize. The MSVD-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable when the basic reproduction number is below unity. Local stability conditions for endemic equilibria are established using Lyapunov second technique and Routh-Hurwitz criteria. Matrix-based formulae are also presented for determining bifurcation and it is shown that the model exhibits forward bifurcation. Sensitivity analysis reveals the significant impact of the probability of infection between hosts on MSVD spread. A two-point Lagrange interpolation polynomial is developed for numerical solutions of the model, enabling exploration of theoretical findings and assessment of how epidemiological factors influence MSVD propagation. The paper contributes a comprehensive understanding of the disease's behavior under various conditions.
