At least 74% of participants (95% confidence interval [CI]: 72%–76%) had strong level evidence for at least one medium- or high-risk actionable genotype that would trigger a change in standard therapy under current international recommendations. About 14% of these participants (95% CI: 12%–16%) were taking medication potentially affected by the genotype in question. Furthermore, ~2.6% of all participants with medication data (95% CI: 1.4%–3.8%) had a high-risk clinically actionable genotype for a medication to which they were exposed. This represents a considerable number of people at the population level. Although relationships between genotype and health outcomes remain contentious, pharmacogenotyping of multiple variants simultaneously may have considerable potential to improve medication safety and efficacy for older people in the community. The pharmacokinetics of theophylline (i.v. aminophylline 250 mg) were studied in a balanced, double-blind crossover following the administration of oral temelastine (100 mg) or placebo, twice daily for 7 days, to 10 normal volunteers. Comparison of volumes of distribution, elimination rate constants, elimination half-lives and areas under the plasma concentration-time curve indicated that temelastine had no significant effect on theophylline pharmacokinetics. 3D carbon nanotube hybrid materials containing VO2 and V2O5 evenly distributed onto vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) is reported. Adjustable loading of particles in controllable sizes onto the VACNTs was developed via a stepwise chemical vapour deposition (CVD) approach. Solid VO(acac)2 is chosen as vanadium source. CO2 acts as reactive gas for the pre-functionalisation of the VACNTs. The process temperature was identified as key parameter to control the deposited vanadium oxide phase. A temperature of 550°C results in monoclinic VO2, while 600 °C results in the deposition of V2O5 onto the VACNT support. The morphology and the amount of deposited material was found to be dependent on the reactor dimensions and the degree of functionalization of the carbon support. An increase of the D/G ratio of the VACNT from 0.75 to 1.08 caused by a CO2 treatment step within the process led to an increase of the particle coverage from a scarce coverage without prior CO2 treatment to a dense coverage of the VACNT support after 15 min of CO2 exposure time. Pancreatic cancer, renowned for its aggressive nature and poor prognosis, necessitates the optimization of treatment strategies. The sequence of procedures in clinical trials is critical, such as evaluating the potential benefits of preoperative chemo-radio-therapy for pancreatic cancer. Nevertheless, we might not be aware of other temporal sequences which have an effect on therapy response or the general outcome. Extracting transitive sequential patterns from patients' medical trajectories allows researchers to identify temporal characteristics for complex diseases. We illustrate how such sequential patterns can be discovered and might be utilized in pancreatic cancer research as well as patient care.

The formation of domains and defects is a part of every self-organized structure without prepatterning which evolves from the electrochemical oxidation of valve metals like Ti, Al or Ta. Defects and domains, especially in highly ordered porous alumina films (PAOX), are one of the most studied phenomena in the current literature. The focus is on understanding their formation in order to find parameters to minimize their amount for applications that require the most highly organized structures. In this letter we give a solution to this problem by showing that the occurrence of defects and domains is an unavoidable consequence of the underlying self-organized process due to the simultaneous impact of the minimum (MINEP) and maximum (MAXEP) entropy production principle. As a consequence, experimental procedures to manufacture defect-free PAOX-films from a self-organization process face a fundamental limitation.

This paper presents a comprehensive workflow for integrating revolving events into the transitive sequential pattern mining (tSPM+) algorithm and Machine Learning for Health Outcomes (MLHO) framework, emphasizing best practices and pitfalls in its application. We emphasize feature engineering and visualization techniques, demonstrating their efficacy in capturing temporal relationships. Applied to an EGFR lung cancer cohort, our approach showcases reliable temporal insights even in a small dataset. This work highlights the importance of temporal nuances in healthcare data analysis, paving the way for improved disease understanding and patient care.

A new 3D micro-nano integrated M-shaped carbon nanotube (CNT) architecture was designed and fabricated. It is based on vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays composed of low-density, mainly double-walled CNTs with simple lateral external contacts to the surroundings. Standard optical lithography techniques were used to locally tailor the width of the vertical block structure. The complete sensor system, based on a broadband blackbody absorber region and a high-resistance thermistor region, can be fabricated in a single chemical vapor deposition process step. The thermistor resistance is mainly determined by the high junction resistances of the adjacent aligned CNTs. This configuration also provides low lateral thermal conductivity and a high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR). These properties are advantageous for new bolometric sensors with high voltage responsivity and broadband absorption from the infrared (IR) to the terahertz spectrum. Preliminary performance evaluations have shown current and voltage responsivities of 2 mA/W and 30 V/W, respectively, in response to IR (980 nm) absorption for a 20 × 20 μm 2 device. The device exhibits an exceptionally fast response time of ≈0.15 ms, coupled with a TCR of -0.91 %/K. These attributes underscore its high operating speed and responsivity, respectively. In particular, the device maintains excellent thermal stability and reliable operation at elevated temperatures in excess of 200 °C, extending its potential utility in challenging environmental conditions. This design allows for further device miniaturization using optical lithography techniques. When quantifying therapeutic drugs using LC-MS/MS instrumentation in clinical laboratories, batch-mode analysis with a calibration curve consisting of 6-10 concentrations for each analyte is the most widely used approach. However, this is an inefficient use of this technology since it increases cost, delays result availability and precludes random instrument access. Various alternative methods to reduce the calibrator use and improve efficiency without compromising analytical quality have been investigated, and a single-point calibration has been reported to be the simplest, least expensive and the quickest approach. This study compares a single and a multi-point calibration method using LC-MS/MS with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) as a model drug. The method was validated for quantitative analysis of 5-FU over a concentration range of 0.05-50 mg/L. Patients undergoing cancer treatment with intravenous 5-FU had plasma 5-FU concentrations measured, and their dose adjusted in real time based on the calculated area under the time-concentration curve (AUC). Subsequently, a single point calibration method using a concentration at 0.5 mg/L was compared to the multi-point calibration method in terms of accuracy and precision. A Bland-Altman bias plot and a Passing-Bablok regression analysis showed a good agreement between the two methods (mean difference = -1.87 %, slope = 1.002, respectively) when comparing patient plasma 5-FU concentrations. The calibration method did not impact the AUC results nor the decision on 5-FU dose adjustments. Droplet Interface Bilayers (DIBs) constitute a commonly used model of artificial membranes for synthetic biology research applications. However, their practical use is often limited by their requirement to be surrounded by oil. Here we demonstrate in-situ bilayer manipulation of submillimeter, hydrogel-encapsulated droplet interface bilayers (eDIBs). Monolithic, Cyclic Olefin Copolymer/Nylon 3D-printed microfluidic devices facilitated the eDIB formation through high-order emulsification. By exposing the eDIB capsules to varying lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) concentrations, we investigated the interaction of lysolipids with three-dimensional DIB networks. Micellar LPC concentrations triggered the bursting of encapsulated droplet networks, while at lower concentrations the droplet network endured structural changes, precisely affecting the membrane dimensions. This chemically-mediated manipulation of enclosed, 3D-orchestrated membrane mimics, facilitates the exploration of readily accessible compartmentalized artificial cellular machinery. Introduction: Environmental pollutants injure the mucociliary elevator, thereby provoking disease progression in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Epithelial resilience mechanisms to environmental nanoparticles in health and disease are poorly characterised., Methods: We delineated the impact of prevalent pollutants such as carbon and zinc oxide nanoparticles, on cellular function and progeny in primary human bronchial epithelial cells (pHBECs) from end-stage COPD (COPD-IV, n=4), early disease (COPD-II, n=3) and pulmonary healthy individuals (n=4). After nanoparticle exposure of pHBECs at air-liquid interface, cell cultures were characterised by functional assays, transcriptome and protein analysis, complemented by single-cell analysis in serial samples of pHBEC cultures focusing on basal cell differentiation., Results: COPD-IV was characterised by a prosecretory phenotype (twofold increase in MUC5AC + ) at the expense of the multiciliated epithelium (threefold reduction in Ac-Tub + ), resulting in an increased resilience towards particle-induced cell damage (fivefold reduction in transepithelial electrical resistance), as exemplified by environmentally abundant doses of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Exposure of COPD-II cultures to cigarette smoke extract provoked the COPD-IV characteristic, prosecretory phenotype. Time-resolved single-cell transcriptomics revealed an underlying COPD-IV unique basal cell state characterised by a twofold increase in KRT5 + ( P =0.018) and LAMB3 + ( P =0.050) expression, as well as a significant activation of Wnt-specific ( P =0.014) and Notch-specific ( P =0.021) genes, especially in precursors of suprabasal and secretory cells., Conclusion: We identified COPD stage-specific gene alterations in basal cells that affect the cellular composition of the bronchial elevator and may control disease-specific epithelial resilience mechanisms in response to environmental nanoparticles. Rechargeable aqueous zinc-air batteries (ZABs) promise high energy density and safety. However, the use of conventional zinc anodes affects the energy output from the battery, so that the theoretical energy density is not achievable under operation conditions. A large portion of the zinc is shielded by anode passivation during the discharge process and remains electrochemically unused, making the operation of rechargeable ZABs inefficient up to date. In a metal anode-free ZAB, there is no unnecessary excess zinc if the zinc reservoir can be precisely adjusted by electrodeposition of zinc from the electrolyte. In this respect, an anode-free battery uses the electrolyte offering a dual-mode functionality not only providing ionic conductivity but also being the source of zinc. In addition, it is shown that a defined porous anode architecture is crucial for high rechargeability in this new type of ZAB. 3D-spatially arranged carbon nanotubes as geometrically defined host structures allow a homogeneous zinc deposition from the electrolyte. Paclitaxel is an anticancer agent efficacious in various tumors. There is large interindividual variability in drug plasma concentrations resulting in a wide variability in observed toxicity in patients. Studies have shown the time the concentration of paclitaxel exceeds 0.05 µM is a predictive parameter of toxicity, making dose individualization potentially useful in reducing the adverse effects. To determine paclitaxel drug concentration, a venous blood sample collected 24 h following the end of infusion is required, often inconvenient for patients. Alternatively, using a microsampling device for self-sampling would facilitate paclitaxel monitoring regardless of the patient's location. We investigated the feasibility of collecting venous and capillary samples (using a Mitra ® device) from cancer patients to determine the paclitaxel concentrations. The relationship between the venous plasma and whole blood and venous and capillary blood (on Mitra ® ) paclitaxel concentrations, defined by a Passing-Bablok regression, were 0.8433 and 0.8569, respectively. Demonstrating a clinically acceptable relationship between plasma and whole blood paclitaxel concentration would reduce the need to establish new target concentrations in whole blood. However, in this study, comparison of venous and capillary blood using Mitra ® for sampling displayed wide confidence intervals suggesting the results from the plasma and whole blood on this device may not be interchangeable., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

The metal organic framework structure ZIF-8 has been grown directly on vertically aligned carbon nano tubes (VACNT) by a solid vapour transformation of a ZnO@VACNT composite with gaseous 2-methylimidazole. The ZnO@VACNT composite was synthesised by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using diethylzinc and water as precursors resulting in a homogeneous distribution of crystalline ZnO particles with an average size of 13 nm within the 3D VACNT host structure. The ZnO@VACNT composite was transformed to ZIF-8 by reaction with 2-methyl-imidazole (Hmim) while maintaining the 3D VACNT structure employing a solid vapour transformation reaction. Reaction time and temperature were identified as key parameters to control the generated surface area and the degree of conversion of the nanoscaled ZnO particles. 80 °C and 72 h were found to be sufficient for a complete conversion while longer reaction times result in even higher surface areas of the formed ZIF-8@VACNT composite. Surface areas of up to 1569 m 2 g -1 could be achieved. Temperatures below 80 °C led to an incomplete conversion even under longer reaction times of up to 6 weeks. Finally, the CO 2 adsorption properties of the ZIF-8@VACNT composite were evaluated. A composite with a 27 w% content of CNTs and a surface area of 1277 m 2 g -1 shows an adsorption of 6.05 mmol g -1 CO 2 at 30 bar. From the comparison with the pristine materials ZIF-8 and VACNT alone the observed overall CO 2 adsorption behaviour of the composite is a combination of the behaviour of the individual components, ZIF-8 and VACNTs. Namely the typical steep rise of the ZIF-8 in the low-pressure regime with a nearly linear steady progression in the medium pressure size regime, the latter typical for VACNTs, proves that the combination of both components leads to enhanced adsorption properties of the ZIF-8@VACNT composite compared to the sole components ZIF-8 and VACNTs.

Background The size-specific dose estimate (SSDE) is a patient-focused CT dose metric. However, published size-dependent conversion factors ( f size ) used to calculate SSDE were determined primarily by using phantoms; only eight to 15 patient data sets were used, all at 120 kV. Purpose To determine the effect of different tube potentials on the water-equivalent diameter (WED) and SSDE for patient CT scans of the head, chest, and abdomen. Materials and Methods This retrospective study used 250 noncontrast CT scans acquired between March 2013 and June 2017. Bony structures were segmented, and their CT numbers were modified to reflect bone attenuation at 70, 90, 110, 130, and 150 kV. Soft-tissue CT numbers were unchanged because of negligible energy dependence. f size was measured in anthropomorphic phantoms for each tube potential and fit to an exponential function. WED and SSDE were determined for each patient at all tube potentials, regression analysis was performed relative to the WED and SSDE at 120 kV, and mean differences relative to 120 kV were calculated. Results In 250 patients (median age, 21.5 years; interquartile range, 44 years; 130 women), WED for all tube potentials was linearly related to the WED at 120 kV in all body regions ( R 2 = 0.995-1.000). The effect of tube potential on WED was negligible for torso examinations (Cohen d < 0.05). In the head, a medium effect size was observed at 70 kV; however, the mean absolute difference in WED was small (-0.49 cm ± 0.08 [standard deviation]; P < .001). For commonly used combinations of tube potential and patient size, the mean differences in SSDE at alternative tube potentials relative to SSDE at 120 kV were less than 5%. Conclusion At noncontrast CT, published size-dependent conversion factors accurately determined size-specific dose estimates on 250 patient scans at five tube potentials other than 120 kV. © RSNA, 2022 Online supplemental material is available for this article. Lead halide perovskite (CsPbBr 3 ) quantum dots (QDs) and two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal dichalcogenides have a significant application in solution-processed optoelectronic devices. Here, we report the oleylamine-assisted exfoliation of TiSe 2 nanosheets (NSs) in dichlorobenzene with high concentration and stable dispersion. The functionalized TiSe 2 NSs were used to synthesize the solution-processed perovskite CsPbBr 3 QD/TiSe 2 NS-based nanocomposite. The perovskite QDs and TiSe 2 NSs were characterized by different techniques. The strong photoluminescence (PL) quenching and decreased lifetime decay of the nanocomposite indicates efficient charge transfer from photo-excited CsPbBr 3 to TiSe 2 NSs. The calculated charge-transfer rate constant ( K ET ) from photo-excited CsPbBr 3 to TiSe 2 NSs increased from 1.50 × 10 8 to 2.79 × 10 8 s -1 in different concentrations of TiSe 2 NSs (5 to 20 μg mL -1 ), respectively. Furthermore, the photo-currents of CsPbBr 3 QD/TiSe 2 NS nanocomposite devices were dramatically enhanced ∼2 times compared to pristine CsPbBr 3 QD based devices, which supports the charge transfer and charge separation in nanocomposite devices.

5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and its oral formulation, capecitabine, are widely used in treating a range of malignancies, either alone or in combination with other antineoplastic drugs. Body surface area-based dosing is used for these agents, despite this approach leading to substantial variability in drug exposure and often resulting in either toxicity or treatment failure. Tailoring therapeutic regimens for individual patients using therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has been shown to significantly reduce toxicity and improve cancer outcomes. However, for optimum TDM, sample timing is crucial, along with the need for a venepuncture blood sample to obtain the plasma currently used for 5-FU measurement. In addition to complex blood sample handling requirements, large sample volume and frequent sampling required for pharmacokinetic analysis is another barrier to successfully implementing TDM in a healthcare setting. Microsampling is an alternative collection method to venepuncture, which, combined with the now readily available liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technology, overcomes the plasma-associated issues. It also has the significant advantage of enabling at home and remote sampling, thus facilitating 5-FU TDM in clinical practice. A LC-MS/MS method for simultaneous measurement of capecitabine, 5'-deoxy-5-fluorocytidine, 5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine and 5-FU using Mitra® microsampling devices for sample collection was developed. A Shimadzu 8060 LC-MS/MS equipped with electrospray ionisation source interface, operated in positive and negative ion modes, with reversed-phase chromatographic separation was employed for sample analysis. Samples were extracted from Mitra® devices using acetonitrile containing stable isotope-labelled internal standards, sonicated, evaporated under vacuum and resuspended in 0.1 % formic acid before injection into the LC-MS/MS. Chromatographic separation was on a Luna Omega Polar C 18 (100 × 2.1 mm, 1.6 µm) column with gradient elution of 0.1 % formic acid in water and acetonitrile. Total run time was 5 min, with the injection volume of 1 µL. The intra and inter-day imprecision ranged from 3.0 to 8.1 and 6.3-13.3 % respectively. Accuracy ranged from 95 -114 % for all analytes. Lower limit of quantification with imprecision of < 19 % and accuracy between 89 and 114 % was 0.05 mg/L for 5-FU and 10 µg/L for other analytes. Assays were linear from 0.05 to 50 mg/L for 5-FU and 10-10,000 µg/L for all other analytes. Analytes were stable on Mitra® devices for up to 9 months at room temperature, 2 years at -30 ℃ and 3 days at 50 ℃. The method was successfully applied for the analysis of samples from patients undergoing cancer treatment with 5-FU and capecitabine. Microsampling using volumetric absorptive microsampling proved to be as reliable as conventional blood collection for 5-FU and capecitabine. Geopolymer (GP) inorganic binders have a superior acid resistance compared to conventional cement ( e.g. , Portland cement, PC) binders, have better microbial compatibility, and are suitable for introducing electrically conductive additives to improve electron and ion transfer properties. In this study, GP-graphite (GPG) composites and PC-graphite (PCG) composites with a graphite content of 1-10 vol % were prepared and characterized. The electrical conductivity percolation threshold of the GPG and PCG composites was around 7 and 8 vol %, respectively. GPG and PCG composites with a graphite content of 8 to 10 vol % were selected as anode electrodes for the electrochemical analysis in two-chamber polarized microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Graphite electrodes were used as the positive control reference material. Geobacter sulfurreducens was used as a biofilm-forming and electroactive model organism for MFC experiments. Compared to the conventional graphite anodes, the anode-respiring biofilms resulted in equal current production on GPG composite anodes, whereas the PCG composites showed a very poor performance. The largest mean value of the measured current densities of a GPG composite used as anodes in MFCs was 380.4 μA cm -2 with a standard deviation of 129.5 μA cm -2 . Overall, the best results were obtained with electrodes having a relatively low Ohmic resistance, that is, GPG composites and graphite. The very first approach employing sustainable GPs as a low-cost electrode binder material in an MFC showed promising results with the potential to greatly reduce the production costs of MFCs, which would also increase the feasibility of MFC large-scale applications., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2021 The Authors. Multilayered heterostructures comprising of In 2 O 3 , SnO 2 , and Al 2 O 3 were studied for their application in thin-film transistors (TFT). The compositional influence of tin oxide on the properties of the thin-film, as well as on the TFT characteristics is investigated. The heterostructures are fabricated by atomic layer deposition (ALD) at 200 °C, employing trimethylindium (TMI), tetrakis(dimethylamino)tin (TDMASn), trimethylaluminum (TMA), and water as precursors. After post-deposition annealing at 400 °C the thin-films are found to be amorphous, however, they show a discrete layer structure of the individual oxides of uniform film thickness and high optical transparency in the visible region. Incorporation of only two monolayers of Al 2 O 3 in the active semiconducting layer the formation of oxygen vacancies can be effectively suppressed, resulting in an improved semiconducting and switching behavior. The heterostacks comprising of In 2 O 3 /SnO 2 /Al 2 O 3 are incorporated into TFT devices, exhibiting a saturation field-effect mobility (μ sat ) of 2.0 cm 2  ⋅ V -1  s -1 , a threshold-voltage (V th ) of 8.6 V, a high current on/off ratio (I On /I Off ) of 1.0×10 7 , and a subthreshold swing (SS) of 485 mV ⋅ dec -1 . The stability of the TFT under illumination is also altered to a significant extent. Alumina thin films are synthesized by combustion synthesis of mixtures of aluminium nitrate (ALN) and methylcarbazate (MCZ). The interdependence of the ratio of oxidizer and reducing agent on composition, microstructure and electronic properties of the resulting oxide layers is investigated. The dielectric and insulating behaviour is improved by addition of different amounts of MCZ (MCZ : ALN = 0.67 or 2.5). In this way films (thickness ∼140 nm) with a dielectric constant κ of 9.7 and a dielectric loss tan δ below 0.015 can be achieved. Medium concentrations of MCZ (MCZ : ALN = 1.0 or 1.5) lead to films with lower performance, though. Our studies indicate two opposing effects of the organic additive. Removal of organic residues during film formation as combustion gases is potentially detrimental. Larger amounts of MCZ, however, cause condensation reactions in the precusor mixture, which improve the microstructure. The porosity of the films can be sucessfully analyzed by positron annihilation liftetime studies. In this way the impact of the organic ligand sphere on the resulting microstructure can be quantified. Samples prepared from ALN alone exhibit mesopores and also larger micropores. In contrast, the formation of mesopores can be inhibited by addition of MCZ.

Titanium diselenide (TiSe 2 ) is the least studied member of the transition metal dichalcogenide family due to a lack of available synthesis methodology, controlled bandgap engineering, and rapid characterization of layers. In this paper, we report the chemical exfoliation of TiSe 2 platelets synthesized by the chemical vapor transport route in ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) functionalized with oleylamine (OLA), for the first time to the best of our knowledge. It is found that the addition of OLA supports the formation of a stable dispersion of a large area of the TiSe 2 sheets due to surface capping with the OLA molecules indicating the importance of the ligand in dispersion behavior. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the hexagonal structure of the TiSe 2 platelets with the space group P3[combining macron]m1 while Raman spectroscopy reveals that two modes of vibration i.e. A 1g and E 2g exist with layered structures having dimensions in micrometers as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms the successful functionalization of chemically exfoliated TiSe 2 nanosheets. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy reveals that exfoliated TiSe 2 has a thickness of 15-55 nm whereas high-resolution transmission electron microscopy indicates thicker sheets for ligand-free exfoliated TiSe 2 which are crystalline. Atomic force microscopy confirms the formation of nanosheets. UV-Visible, photoluminescence, and time-resolved PL spectroscopy showed an enhanced effect and better average lifetime of excitation for the exfoliated sheets with OLA than those without OLA. The C-V studies reveal that with increasing scan rate, the corresponding current also increases. The present study offers the possibility of their utilization in optoelectronics, advanced low-power electronics, voltage-controlled oscillators, ultra-fast electronics, and electrochemical devices.

Despite advances in targeted cancer therapy, the fluoropyrimidines 5-fluorouracil (5FU) and capecitabine continue to play an important role in oncology. Historically, dosing of these drugs has been based on body surface area. This approach has been demonstrated to be an imprecise way to determine the optimal dose for a patient. Evidence in the literature has demonstrated that precision dosing approaches, such as DPD enzyme activity testing and, in the case of intravenous 5FU, pharmacokinetic-guided dosing, can reduce toxicity and yield better patient outcomes. However, despite the evidence, there has not been uniform adoption of these approaches in the clinical setting. When a drug such as 5FU has been used clinically for many decades, it may be difficult to change clinical practice. Aluminum pigments were coated with Fe 2 O 3 and CuO by solution-based thermal decomposition of the urea nitrate compounds hexakisureairon(III)nitrate and tetrakisureacopper(II)nitrate. The deposition process was optimized to obtain homogeneously coated aluminum pigments. The growth of the surface coatings was controlled by investigation with scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and static light scattering as well as infrared, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The iron precursor showed an incomplete decomposition in solution, incorporating traces of urea molecules inside the coatings while the copper precursor showed complete dissociation accompanied by in situ formation of amine complexes. The amount of organic residues resulting from ligand fragments in the final oxide coatings could be reduced to 22 % for the iron oxide and 12 % for the copper oxide by further temperature treatment in solution (259 °C). Clinic- and hospital-based home care describes models of care where services commonly associated with hospital inpatient care are provided at the patient's home or in an outpatient or community-based clinic. Hospital in the Home (HITH), also termed Hospital at Home (HaH) in parts of Europe and America, is a common and important example of this type of care. Other examples include infusion centers, skilled nursing facilities (particularly in the USA), self-administration models (including home infusion services) and administration through outpatient or community clinics. Different models of HITH care are used internationally and these encompass a wide range of services. Medication administration, particularly outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT), is an important element in many of these models of care. There is a key role for pharmacists since the provision of medication is integral in this model of patient care outside the hospital setting. Data on the growing importance of HITH and OPAT as well as the administration of medications suited to clinic- and hospital-based home care, including subcutaneous and intramuscular injectables, immunoglobulins and other blood fractions, cancer chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition, biologicals/biosimilars, vasopressors and enzymes, using differing service models, are described. The pharmacist's role is evolving from that involved primarily with dose preparation and supply of medications. Their clinical expertise in medication management ensures that they are an integral member and leader in these models of care. Their role ensures the safe and quality use of medicines, particularly across transitions of care, with the pharmacist taking on the roles of educator and consultant to patients and health professional colleagues. Activities such as antimicrobial stewardship and ongoing monitoring of patients and outcomes is fundamental to ensure quality patient outcomes in these settings.

Cobalt-doped zinc oxide single crystals with the shape of hexagonal platelets were synthesized by thermohydrolysis of zinc acetate, cobalt acetate, and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) in mixtures of ethanol and water. The mineralization proceeds by a low-temperature dissolution-reprecipitation process from the liquid phase by the formation of basic cobalt zinc salts as intermediates. The crystal shape as well as twin formation of the resulting oxide phase can be influenced by careful choice of the solvent mixture and the amount of doping. An understanding of the course of the reaction was achieved by comprehensive employment of analytical techniques (i.e., SEM, XRD, IR) including an in-depth HRTEM study of precipitates from various reaction stages. In addition, EPR as well as UV/Vis spectroscopic measurements provide information about the insertion of the cobalt dopant into the zincite lattice. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is shown to be suitable for depositing coatings of the platelets on glass substrates functionalized with polyelectrolyte multilayers and hence is applied for the formation of monolayers containing domains with ordered tessellation. No major differences are found between deposits on substrates with anionic or cationic surface modification. The adherence to the substrates is sufficient to determine the absolute orientation of the deposited polar single crystals by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) studies., (© 2020 The Authors. Surface functionalization of porous materials allows for the introduction of additional functionality coupled with high mechanical stability of functionalized inner pores. Herein, we investigate the surface-initiated ring-opening polymerization (SI-ROP) of phenylalanine- N -carboxyanhydride (PA-NCA) in porous alumina membranes (ALOX-membranes) with respect to different solvent mixtures (tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dichloromethane (DCM)). It was found that increasing the volume fraction of DCM leads to an increasing amount of fibrillar polymer structures within the porous ALOX-membrane. A three-dimensional fibrillar network with intrinsic porosity was formed in DCM, whereas in THF, a dense and smooth polypeptide film was observed. A post-treatment with a mixture of chloroform and dichloroacetic acid leads to rearrangement of the morphology of the grafted polymer films. The analysis by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and contact angle measurements (CA) reveals a change in morphology of the grafted polymer films, which is due to the rearrangement of the secondary structure of the polypeptides. No significant loss of the surface-grafted polypeptides was determined by thermogravimetric (TG) measurements, which indicates that the change in morphology of the polymer films is solely a result of a conformational change of the surface-grafted polypeptides. Furthermore, adsorption of a test analyte (chloroanilic acid) was investigated with respect to different polymer functionalization schemes for reversed-phase solid phase extraction applications. A number of barriers and challenges must be overcome in order to conduct the pharmacokinetic studies that are urgently needed to inform the selection and dosing of medication in neonates. However, overcoming these barriers can be difficult. This review outlines the common barriers researchers are confronted with, including issues with ethics approval and consent, study design for pharmacokinetic studies and the ability to measure the drug concentrations in the blood samples obtained. The search for novel photocatalysts that make use of almost the entire solar spectrum remains an ongoing task to achieve high efficiency in energy conversion. While titanium chalcogenides offer a variety of phase compositions with different photophysical properties, their photocatalytic performance in pollutant degradation has not been investigated to date. In contrast to the model photocatalyst titanium dioxide, titanium chalcogenides possess small band gaps which make them eligible to absorb light in the visible range up to the near-infrared region, thus making them interesting candidates for photocatalysis. Herein titanium chalcogenide-based photocatalysts are synthesized by the chemical vapor transport (CVT) method and studied for their photocatalytic activity towards pollutant degradation. A series of titanium chalcogenides TiX n (X = S, n = 1-3; X = Se, n = 2; X = Te, n = 1) have been characterized by a variety of physico-chemical methods. Due to the expected non-stoichiometry of some titanium sulfides, they offer a large number of defect states which make them interesting candidates for photocatalysis. Thus, these titanium-chalcogenides were systematically studied for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants using methyl orange dye as the test pollutant under simulated sunlight. Particularly TiS and TiS 3 show high photocatalytic and thermocatalytic activity, outperforming the activity of titanium dioxide (pure anatase). By controlling the ratios of titanium and chalcogen elements and the specific reaction conditions, a variety of titanium chalcogenides with different compositions and phases showing a high photocatalytic activity can be accessed. Furthermore, it is found that the formation of a titanium dioxide passivation layer during photocatalysis results in a titanium oxide/titanium sulfide heterostructure. This allows further enhancement of the photocatalytic and thermocatalytic activity compared to the bare Ti-chalcogenides.

Combustion synthesis of dielectric yttrium oxide and aluminium oxide thin films is possible by introducing a molecular single-source precursor approach employing a newly designed nitro functionalized malonato complex of yttrium (Y-DEM-NO 2 1) as well as defined urea nitrate coordination compounds of yttrium (Y-UN 2) and aluminium (Al-UN 3). All new precursor compounds were extensively characterized by spectroscopic techniques (NMR/IR) as well as by single-crystal structure analysis for both urea nitrate coordination compounds. The thermal decomposition of the precursors 1-3 was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry coupled with mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy (TG-MS/IR). As a result, a controlled thermal conversion of the precursors into dielectric thin films could be achieved. These oxidic thin films integrated within capacitor devices are exhibiting excellent dielectric behaviour in the temperature range between 250 and 350 °C, with areal capacity values up to 250 nF cm -2 , leakage current densities below 1.0 × 10 -9 A cm -2 (at 1 MV cm -1 ) and breakdown voltages above 2 MV cm -1 . Thereby the increase in performance at higher temperatures can be attributed to the gradual conversion of the intermediate hydroxy species into the respective metal oxide which is confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Finally, a solution-processed Y x O y based TFT was fabricated employing the precursor Y-DEM-NO 2 1. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon felt was subjected to N 2 -plasma treatment to increase the heteroatom defects and reactive edge sites as a method to increase the performance in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs). N-doping in the felt was mainly in the form of pyrrolic and pyridinic nitrogen. Even though the amount of oxygen functional groups on the N 2 -plasma-treated sample was very low, the felt showed enhanced electrochemical performance for both V 3+ /V 2+ as well as V 5+ /V 4+ redox reactions. The result is highly significant as the pristine electrode with the same amount of oxygen functional groups showed significantly less activity for the V 3+ /V 2+ redox reaction. Overall, the single-flow cell experiments with N 2 -plasma-treated felt showed superior performance compared to the pristine sample. Therefore, the enhanced performance observed for the N 2 -plasma-treated sample should be attributed to the increase in defects and edge sites. Thus, from the present study, it can be concluded that an alternate way to increase the performance of the VRFBs is to introduce specific defects such as N-doping/substitution or to increase the edge sites. In other words, defects induced in the carbon felt such as heteroatom doping are as beneficial as the presence of oxygen functional groups for the improved performance of VRFBs. Therefore, for an optimum performance of VRFBs, defects such as N-substitution as well as oxygen functionality should be tuned.

Tungsten oxide nanorods were synthesized using a template assisted process. A polycarbonate membrane (pore diameter 100 nm) was vacuum infiltrated by an aqueous solution of ammonium paratungstate ((NH4)10H2W12O42·xH2O) and yielded crystalline 3D oriented WO3 nanorod arrays after template etching and calcination. By coating the nanorod arrays with carbon, a binder-free 3D WO3/C composite electrode could be fabricated, allowing capacities up to 1149, 811, 699, 559 and 253 mA h g-1 for cycles 1, 2, 20, 50 and 200 as well as a coulombic efficiency of around 99%. Moreover, as prepared WO3 nanorod structures without that specific type of carbon coating deliver capacities in a range of 200-250 mA h g-1 after 20 cycles. Finally, a full cell lithium ion battery system is fabricated. It consists of LiCoO2 nanoparticles as cathode and binder-free carbon coated 3D WO3 composite material as anode. Pre-lithiation of this 3D WO3/C composite material as pre-conditioning before full cell assembly leads to a cell capacity of almost twice of that without pre-lithiation. Discharge capacities of 111, 91, 41 and 23 mA h g-1 can be obtained for cycles 2, 20, 100 and 200 with a coulombic efficiency of around 99% in the case of the pre-lithiated 3D WO3/C composite anode.

Combustion synthesis of semiconducting amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide IGZO (In:Ga:Zn, 7:1:1.5) thin films was carried out using urea nitrate precursor compounds of indium(III), gallium(III) and zinc(II). This approach provides further understanding towards the oxide formation process under a moderate temperature regime by employment of well-defined coordination compounds. All precursor compounds were fully characterized by spectroscopic techniques as well as by single crystal structure analysis. Their intrinsic thermal decomposition was studied by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry coupled with mass spectrometry and infrared spectroscopy (TG-MS/IR). For all precursors a multistep decomposition involving a complex redox-reaction pathway under in situ formation of nitrogen containing molecular species was observed. Controlled thermal conversion of a mixture of the indium, gallium and zinc urea nitrate complexes into ternary amorphous IGZO films could thus be achieved. Thin film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated from a defined compositional mixture of the molecular precursors. The TFT devices exhibited decent charge carrier mobilities of 0.4 and 3.1 cm 2 /(Vs) after annealing of the deposited films at temperatures as low as 250 and 350 °C, respectively. The design of efficient substrates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for large-scale fabrication at low cost is an important issue in further enhancing the use of SERS for routine chemical analysis. Here, we systematically investigate the effect of different radio frequency (rf) plasmas (argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, air and oxygen plasma) as well as combinations of these plasmas on the surface morphology of thin silver films. It was found that different surface structures and different degrees of surface roughness could be obtained by a systematic variation of the plasma type and condition as well as plasma power and treatment time. The differently roughened silver surfaces act as efficient SERS substrates showing greater enhancement factors compared to as prepared, sputtered, but untreated silver films when using rhodamine B as Raman probe molecule. The obtained roughened silver films were fully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron (XPS and Auger) and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) as well as contact angle measurements. It was found that different morphologies of the roughened Ag films could be obtained under controlled conditions. These silver films show a broad range of tunable SERS enhancement factors ranging from 1.93 × 10 2 to 2.35 × 10 5 using rhodamine B as probe molecule. The main factors that control the enhancement are the plasma gas used and the plasma conditions, i.e., pressure, power and treatment time. Altogether this work shows for the first time the effectiveness of a plasma treatment for surface roughening of silver thin films and its profound influence on the interface-controlled SERS enhancement effect. The method can be used for low-cost, large-scale production of SERS substrates.

Molybdenum(vi) oxide (MoO3) nanorod arrays were synthesized employing a template-assisted method. A polycarbonate membrane as a template was vacuum infiltrated with an aqueous solution of ammonium heptamolybdate. Template removal by oxygen plasma etching and calcination leads to the formation of highly crystalline 3D MoO3 nanorod arrays as a negative replica of the template. By applying sucrose as the carbon precursor, the mantling of the MoO3 nanorods with a thin carbon coating is obtained. Simultaneously, the direct and binder-free contact between the 3D MoOx nanorod arrays and the current collector resulting from the carbon coating could be achieved and leads to high capacities of up to 1376, 783, 856, 804 and 324 mA h g-1 for cycles 1, 2, 20, 50 and 200 as well as a coulombic efficiency of 99% for such 3D MoOx/C composite electrodes. The cycling performance of this 3D MoOx/C composite material is even more impressive, when comparing the determined experimental capacities with the theoretical capacities of graphite (372 mA h g-1) and MoO2 (838 mA h g-1). Additionally, MoO3 nanorod array electrodes without such an encapsulating carbon coating show an average capacity of only 175 mA h g-1 between cycles 20 and 200. Thus, the carbon coating of the MoO3 nanorod array can increase the electrochemical performance of a lithium-ion cell compared to conventional carbon additives when using MoO3 as the active anode material. This emphasizes the positive effects of the intimate and efficient electron transport and large surface area of the electrode material based on a minimal footprint architecture in Li-ion cells.

Herein, we report the synthesis and molecular structure of the mono- and dianionic aromatic molecules [(B15C5-κ5O)2K+](LDOPT˙-) (1) and [(B15C5-κ5O)2K+]2(LDOPT2-)THFsolv (2) derived from the parent aromatic polyhydrocarbon 5,6:11,12-di-o-phenylenetetracene (DOPT, LDOPT) by a controlled stepwise one and two electron chemical reduction. The effect of single and double electron charge transfer to a polycondensed aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) without any disturbing influence of an associated metal cation has been demonstrated. This was achieved by fully sandwiching the cationic K+ counterions between two benzo-15-crown-5-ether (B15C5) ligands resulting in a fully encapsulating (κ10O) geometry which ensures a complete separation of the K+ counterions and the bare anionic PAH species [LDOPT˙-] and [LDOPT2-]. The structural changes accompanied by the stepwise reduction from LDOPT to [LDOPT˙-] to [LDOPT2-] are discussed and compared to earlier predictions based on density functional theory (DFT) as well as the results of previous studies of alkaline metal cationic PAH anion interactions of DOPT in which only a partial metal cation encapsulation has been achieved so far.

The influence of the composition within multilayered heterostructure oxide semiconductors has a critical impact on the performance of thin-film transistor (TFT) devices. The heterostructures, comprising alternating polycrystalline indium oxide and zinc oxide layers, are fabricated by a facile atomic layer deposition (ALD) process, enabling the tuning of its electrical properties by precisely controlling the thickness of the individual layers. This subsequently results in enhanced TFT performance for the optimized stacked architecture after mild thermal annealing at temperatures as low as 200 °C. Superior transistor characteristics, resulting in an average field-effect mobility (μ sat. ) of 9.3 cm 2 V -1 s -1 ( W/ L = 500), an on/off ratio ( I on / I off ) of 5.3 × 10 9 , and a subthreshold swing of 162 mV dec -1 , combined with excellent long-term and bias stress stability are thus demonstrated. Moreover, the inherent semiconducting mechanism in such multilayered heterostructures can be conveniently tuned by controlling the thickness of the individual layers. Herein, devices comprising a higher In 2 O 3 /ZnO ratio, based on individual layer thicknesses, are predominantly governed by percolation conduction with temperature-independent charge carrier mobility. Careful adjustment of the individual oxide layer thicknesses in devices composed of stacked layers plays a vital role in the reduction of trap states, both interfacial and bulk, which consequently deteriorates the overall device performance. The findings enable an improved understanding of the correlation between TFT performance and the respective thin-film composition in ALD-based heterostructure oxides.

Owing to their high stability against corrosive gases, carbon-based adsorbents are preferentially used for the adsorptive removal of SO 2 . In the present study, SO 2 adsorption on different carbon nanomaterials namely carbon nanohorns (CNHs), multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) are investigated and compared against the adsorption characteristics of activated carbon and graphene oxide (GO). A comprehensive overview of the adsorption behavior of this family of carbon adsorbents is given for the first time. The relative influence of surface area and functional groups on the SO 2 adsorption characteristics is discussed. The isosteric heat of adsorption values are calculated to quantify the nature of the interaction between the SO 2 molecule and the adsorbent. Most importantly, while chemisorption is found to dominate the adsorption behavior in activated carbon, SO 2 adsorption on carbon nanomaterials occurs by a physisorption mechanism.

Vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) are one dimensional carbon objects anchored atop of a solid substrate. They are geometrically fixed in contrast to their counterparts, randomly oriented carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In this progress report, the breadth in which these one dimensional, mechanically flexible, though robust and electrical conducting carbon nanostructures can be employed as functional material is shown and our research is put in perspective to work in the last five to ten years. The connection between the different areas touched in this report is the biomimetic-materials approach, which rely on the hairy morphology of VACNTs. These properties in connection with their electrical conductivity offer possibilities towards new functional features and applications of VACNTs. To appreciate the possibilities of biomimetic research with VACNTs, first their material characteristics are given to make the reader familiar with specific features of their synthesis, the peculiarities in arranging and controlling the morphology of CNTs in a vertical alignment as well as a current understanding of these properties on a microscopic basis. In doing so, similarities as well as differences, which offer new possibilities for biomimetic studies of VACNTS with respect to multiwalled randomly oriented CNTs, will become clear., (© 2017 The Authors. Herein we report the synthesis and crystal structures of three light alkali metal salts of the dianion of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 5,6:11,12-di-o-phenylenetetracene (L DOPT ). The compounds are obtained by reaction of L DOPT with an excess of lithium or sodium metal in different O-donor solvents (DME, diglyme) and crystallize as naked, solvated-cation separated dianions exhibiting no interaction between the alkali metal ion and the aromatic π-system of L DOPT . Depending on the aprotic etheral solvent and the hardness of the alkaline metal agent a significant structural perturbation of the conjugated carbon framework of L DOPT is observed resulting in a bowl shaped curvature of the anionic π-perimeter, in contrast to its fully planar neutral state. Reduction of L DOPT with lithium in DME results in the formation of the solvent-separated molecular structure of {[(DME-κ 2 O) 3 Li + ] 2 (L DOPT 2- )} 2 1 containing naked isolated units of dianionic L DOPT . A similar structural arrangement is observed for the corresponding sodium compound {[(DME-κ 2 O) 3 Na + ] 2 (L DOPT 2- )} 2 2 in which, however, a lesser curvature of the isolated dianionic ligand skeleton compared to 1 is observed. In contrast to 1 and 2 reduction with sodium in diglyme results in the formation of {[(diglyme-κ 3 O) 2 Na + ] 2 (L DOPT 2- )} 0.5 3. The deformation of the peripheric phenylene rings of [L DOPT 2- ] in 3 is not as pronounced as compared to 1 and 2. Nevertheless, molecular structures of 1-3 deviate from full-planarity as observed in the parent neutral L DOPT . No preferential endo- or exo-site coordination of the alkaline metal cations Li + and Na + on the curved dianionic π-perimeter is observed.

Whereas vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNTs) typically show a promising adsorption behavior at high pressures, carbon nanohorns (CNHs) exhibit superior gas adsorption properties in the low pressure regime due to their inherent microporosity. These adsorption characteristics are further enhanced when both materials are opened at their tips. The so prepared composite material allows one to investigate the effect of physical entrapment of CO 2 molecules within the specific adsorption sites of VACNTs composed of opened double walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and in specific adsorption sites created by spherically aggregated opened single walled carbon nanohorns. Combining 50 wt% of tip opened CNTs with tip opened CNHs increases the CO 2 adsorption capacity of this material by ∼24% at 30 bar and 298 K compared to opened CNHs alone.
