Antiperovskite structure compounds (X3AB, where X is an alkali cation and A and B are anions) have the potential for highly correlated motion between the cation and a cluster anion on the A or B site. This so-called “paddle-wheel” mechanism may be the basis for enhanced cation mobility in solid electrolytes. Through combined experiments and modeling, the first instance of a double paddle-wheel mechanism, leading to fast sodium ion conduction in the antiperovskite Na3−xO1−x(NH2)x(BH4), is shown. As the concentration of amide (NH2−) cluster anions is increased, large positive deviations in ionic conductivity above that predicted from a vacancy diffusion model are observed. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and NMR, the cluster anion rotational dynamics are characterized and it is found that cation mobility is influenced by the rotation of both NH2− and BH4− species, resulting in sodium ion conductivity a factor of 102 higher at x= 1 than expected for the vacancy mechanism alone. Generalization of this phenomenon to other compounds could accelerate fast ion conductor exploration and design.

A polycrystalline iridate Li8IrO6 material was prepared via heating Li2O and IrO2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li8IrO6 adopts the nonpolar space group R3 with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO6 and LiO6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c-axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li8IrO6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Neel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment μeff (Ir) = 1.73 μB and insulating character indicate that Li8IrO6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.

CaFe2O4-type sodium postspinels (Na-CFs), with Na+ occupying tunnel sites, are of interest as prospective battery electrodes. While many compounds of this structure type require high-pressure synthesis, several compounds are known to form at ambient pressure. Here we report a large expansion of the known Na-CF phase space at ambient pressure, having successfully synthesized NaCrTiO4, NaRhTiO4, NaCrSnO4, NaInSnO4, NaMg0.5Ti1.5O4, NaFe0.5Ti1.5O4, NaMg0.5Sn1.5O4, NaMn0.5Sn1.5O4, NaFe0.5Sn1.5O4, NaCo0.5Sn1.5O4, NaNi0.5Sn1.5O4, NaCu0.5Sn1.5O4, NaZn0.5Sn1.5O4, NaCd0.5Sn1.5O4, NaSc1.5Sb0.5O4, Na1.16In1.18Sb0.66O4, and several solid solutions. In contrast to earlier reports, even cations that are strongly Jahn-Teller active (e.g., Mn3+ and Cu2+) can form Na-CFs at ambient pressure when combined with Sn4+ rather than with the smaller Ti4+. Order and disorder are probed at the average and local length-scales with synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Strong ordering of framework cations between the two framework sites is not observed, except in the case of Na1.16In1.18Sb0.66O4. This compound is the first example of an Na-CF that contains Na+ in both the tunnel and framework sites, reminiscent of Li-rich spinels. Trends in the thermodynamic stability of the new compounds are explained on the basis of crystal-chemistry and density functional theory (DFT). Further DFT calculations examine the relative stability of the CF versus spinel structures at various degrees of sodium extraction in the context of electrochemical battery reactions.

Graphite, a robust host for reversible lithium storage, enabled the first commercially viable lithium-ion batteries. However, the thermal degradation pathway and the safety hazards of lithiated graphite remain elusive. Here, solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) decomposition, lithium leaching, and gas release of the lithiated graphite anode during heating were examined by in situ synchrotron X-ray techniques and in situ mass spectroscopy. The source of flammable gas such as H2 was identified and quantitively analyzed. Also, the existence of highly reactive residual lithium on the graphite surface was identified at high temperatures. Our results emphasized the critical role of the SEI in anode thermal stability and uncovered the potential safety hazards of the flammable gases and leached lithium. The anode thermal degradation mechanism revealed in the present work will stimulate more efforts in the rational design of anodes to enable safe energy storage., The role of the lithiated graphite anode in battery thermal runaway failure remains under intense investigation. In this work, with multiple in situ synchrotron X-ray characterizations, the phase evolution, gas release, and lithium leaching of lithiated graphite anode are illustrated in detail.

We present a study on the nuclear and magnetic structures of two iron-based garnets with magnetic cations isolated on tetrahedral sites. Ca\(_2\)YZr\(_2\)Fe\(_3\)O\(_{12}\) and Ca\(_2\)LaZr\(_2\)Fe\(_3\)O\(_{12}\) offer an interesting comparison for examining the effect of increasing cation size within the diamagnetic backbone of the garnet crystal structure, and how such changes affect the magnetic order. Despite both systems exhibiting well-pronounced magnetic transitions at low temperatures, we also find evidence for diffuse magnetic scattering due to a competition between the nearest-neighbor, next nearest-neighbor, and so on, within the tetrahedral sites. This competition results in a complex noncollinear magnetic structure on the tetrahedral sublattice creating a mixture of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions above the long-range ordering temperature near 20 K and suggests that the cubic site of the garnet plays a significant role in mediating the superexchange interactions between tetrahedral cations.

A polycrystalline sample of Tl2Ir2O7 was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods. Tl2Ir2O7 crystallizes in the cubic pyrochlore structure with space group Fd3m (No. 227). The Ir4+ oxidation state is confirmed by Ir-L3 X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Combined temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and DFT+DMFT calculation data show that Tl2Ir2O7 is a Pauli paramagnetic metal, but it is close to a metal-insulator transition. The effective ionic size of Tl3+ is much smaller than that of Pr3+ in metallic Pr2Ir2O7; hence, Tl2Ir2O7 would be expected to be insulating according to the established phase diagram of the pyrochlore iridate compounds, A3+2Ir4+2O7. Our experimental and theoretical studies indicate that Tl2Ir2O7 is uniquely different from the current A3+2Ir4+2O7 phase diagram. This uniqueness is attributed primarily to the electronic configuration difference between Tl3+ and rare-earth ions, which plays a substantial role in determining the Ir-O-Ir bond angle, and the corresponding electrical and magnetic properties.

Lithium-rich silicides (Li15Si4), formed during the electrochemical lithiation of silicon, show high reactivity with electrolyte components that contribute to capacity decay, formal lithium loss, and low coulombic efficiency. Recently, the reactivity of lithium silicides was found to be suppressed by substituting a multivalent cation (i.e. Mg, Ca) for lithium that results in the room temperature formation of a ternary Li-M-Si phase. In this study, we explored a range of multivalent electrolyte salt additives (M = Ni, Cu, La, Ce, Sr, Ba, and Ca-Mg mixed salt) in a lithium-ion cell configuration and identified a room temperature electrochemical route to the formation of new ternary and quaternary lithium silicides. Using this method, both nickel and copper salts were found to plate onto the silicon electrode surface upon lithiation. Based on refined synchrotron XRD data, multivalent cations with an ionic radius similar to Na (∼1.03 Å) or smaller can be inserted electrochemically into a formally cation-deficient Li15Si4 host lattice to form new ternary (or quartenary) phases. The electrochemical synthesis of a new quaternary Li-M-M’-Si phase represents a facile route to preparing and scaling materials isostructural to the Heusler phase and electron-precise Li14MgSi4 phase that results in enhanced cycling and calendar life performance.

α-V2O5 has been extensively explored as a Mg2+ intercalation host with potential as a battery cathode, offering high theoretical capacities and potentials vs. Mg2+/Mg. However, large voltage hysteresis is observed with Mg insertion and extraction, introducing significant and unacceptable round-trip energy losses with cycling. Conventional interpretations suggest that bulk ion transport of Mg2+ within the cathode particles is the major source of this hysteresis. Herein, we demonstrate that nanosizing α-V2O5 gives a measurable reduction to voltage hysteresis on the first cycle that substantially raises energy efficiency, indicating that mechanical formatting of the α-V2O5 particles contributes to hysteresis. However, no measurable improvement in hysteresis is found in the nanosized α-V2O5 in latter cycles despite the much shorter diffusion lengths, suggesting that other factors aside from Mg transport, such as Mg transfer between the electrolyte and electrode, contribute to this hysteresis. This observation is in sharp contrast to the conventional interpretation of Mg electrochemistry. Therefore, this study uncovers critical fundamental underpinning limiting factors in Mg battery electrochemistry, and constitutes a pivotal step towards a high-voltage, high-capacity electrode material suitable for Mg batteries with high energy density.

Double perovskite oxides with d8-d3 electronic configurations are expected to be ferromagnetic from the Goodenough-Kanamori rules, such as ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6. In search of new ferromagnetic insulators, double perovskite Ba2NiIrO6 was successfully synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods (8 GPa and 1573 K). Ba2NiIrO6 crystallizes in a cubic double perovskite structure (space group: Fm3m), with an ordered arrangement of NiO6 and IrO6 octahedra. X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy confirms the nominal Ni(II) and Ir(VI) valence states. Ba2NiIrO6 displays an antiferromagnetic order at 51 K. The positive Weiss temperature, however, indicates that ferromagnetic interactions are dominant. Isothermal magnetization curves at low temperatures support a field-induced spin-flop transition.

The recent discovery of the A

The reactions of MnII (O2 CCH3 )2 with NEt3 Me+ CN- and NEt2 Me2 + CN- form (NEt3 Me)2 MnII 5 (CN)12 (1) and (NEt2 Me2 )2 MnII 5 (CN)12 (2), respectively. Structure model-building and Rietveld refinement of high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data revealed a cubic [a=24.0093 A (1), 23.8804 A (2)] 3D extended structural motif with adjacent tetrahedral and octahedral MnII sites in a 3:2 ratio. Each tetrahedral MnII site is surrounded by four low-spin octahedral MnII sites, and each octahedral MnII site is surrounded by six high-spin tetrahedral MnII sites; adjacent sites are antiferromagnetically coupled in 3D. Compensation does not occur, and magnetic ordering as a ferrimagnet is observed at Tc =13 K for 2 based on the temperature at which remnant magnetization, Mr (T)→0. The hysteresis has an unusual constricted shape with inflection points around 50 and 1.2 kOe with a 5 K coercivity of 16 Oe and remnant magnetization, Mr , of 2050 emuOe mol-1 . The unusual structure and stoichiometry are attributed to the very ionic nature of the high-spin N-bonded MnII ion, which enables the maximization of the attractive van der Waals interactions through minimization of void space via a reduced ∠ MnNC. This results in an additional example of the Ax MnII y (CN)x+2y (x=0, y=1; x=1, y=3; x=2, y=1; x=2, y=2; x=2, y=3; x=3, y=5; and x=4, y=1) family of compounds possessing an unprecedented stoichiometry and lattice motif that are cation adaptive structured materials.

The mineral Zlatogorite, CuNiSb2, was synthesized in the laboratory for the first time by annealing elements at ambient pressure (CuNiSb2-AP). Rietveld refinement of synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data indicates that CuNiSb2-AP crystallizes in the NiAs-derived structure (P3m1, #164) with Cu and Ni ordering. The structure consists of alternate NiSb6 and CuSb6 octahedral layers via face-sharing. The formation of such structure instead of metal disordered NiAs-type structure (P63/mmc, #194) is validated by the lower energy of the ordered phase by first-principle calculations. Interatomic crystal orbital Hamilton population, electron localization function, and charge density analysis reveal strong Ni-Sb, Cu-Sb, and Cu-Ni bonding and long weak Sb-Sb interactions in CuNiSb2-AP. The magnetic measurement indicates that CuNiSb2-AP is Pauli paramagnetic. First-principle calculations and experimental electrical resistivity measurements reveal that CuNiSb2-AP is a metal. The low Seebeck coefficient and large thermal conductivity suggest that CuNiSb2 is not a potential thermoelectric material. Single crystals were grown by chemical vapor transport. The high pressure sample (CuNiSb2-8 GPa) was prepared by pressing CuNiSb2-AP at 700 °C and 8 GPa. However, the structures of single crystal and CuNiSb2-8 GPa are best fit with a disordered metal structure in the P3m1 space group, corroborated by transmission electron microscopy.

The effect of a high-performance retarding additive in oil well cements was investigated under elevated temperature (165°C) and pressure (1000 psi) conditions via in situ synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) and quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) techniques. Under these temperature and pressure conditions, crystalline calcium silicate hydrates (C–S–H) are formed through the cement hydration process. From in situ XRD experiments, the retardation effect was observed by a change in the rate of the appearance of 11 Å tobermorites as well as a change in the rate of the α-C2SH generation and depletion. QENS analysis revealed that the retardation effect was related to the non-conversion of free water to chemical and constrained water components. A high presence of free water components was attributed to a decrease in 11 Å tobermorites along with slower consumption of the quartz and portlandite phases. Furthermore, QENS results infer that the water molecules experienced confinement in the restricted pore spaces. The retarder inhibited this initial water confinement by slowing the bulk diffusion of free water in the confined region.

Prior calculations have predicted that chalcohalide antiperovskites may exhibit enhanced ionic mobility compared to oxyhalide antiperovskites as solid-state electrolytes. Here, the synthesis of Ag-, Li-, and Na-based chalcohalide antiperovskites is investigated using first-principles calculations and in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. These techniques demonstrate that the formation of Ag3SI is facilitated by the adoption of a common body centered cubic packing of S2- and I- in the reactants and products at elevated temperatures, with additional stabilization achieved by the formation of a solid solution of the anions. The absence of these two features appears to hinder the formation of the analogous Li and Na antiperovskites.

A new polar and magnetic oxide, LuCrWO6, was synthesized under high pressure (6 GPa) and high temperature (1673 K). LuCrWO6 is isostructural with the previously reported polar YCrWO6 (SG: Pna21, no. 33). The ordering of CrO6 and WO6 octahedra in the edge-shared dimers induce the polar structure. The effective size of rare earth, Ln cation does not seem to affect the symmetry of LnCrWO6. Second harmonic generation measurements of LuCrWO6 confirmed the noncentrosymmetric character and strong piezoelectric domains are observed from piezoresponse force microscopy at room temperature. LuCrWO6 exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior, TN, of ∼18 K with a Weiss temperature of -30.7 K.

V2O5 is of interest as a Mg intercalation electrode material for Mg batteries, both in its thermodynamically stable layered polymorph (α-V2O5) and in its metastable tunnel structure (ζ-V2O5). However, such oxide cathodes typically display poor Mg insertion/removal kinetics, with large voltage hysteresis. Herein, we report the synthesis and evaluation of nanosized (ca. 100 nm) ζ-V2O5 in Mg-ion cells, which displays significantly enhanced electrochemical kinetics compared to microsized ζ-V2O5. This effect results in a significant boost in stable discharge capacity (130 mA h g-1) compared to bulk ζ-V2O5 (70 mA h g-1), with reduced voltage hysteresis (1.0 V compared to 1.4 V). This study reveals significant advancements in the use of ζ-V2O5 for Mg-based energy storage and yields a better understanding of the kinetic limiting factors for reversible magnesiation reactions into such phases.

FeAs2−xSex (x = 0.30–1.0) samples were synthesized as phase pure powders by conventional solid-state techniques and as single crystals (x = 0.50) from chemical vapor transport. The composition of the crystals was determined to be Fe1.025(3)As1.55(3)Se0.42(3), crystallizing in the marcasite structure type, Pnnm space group. FeAs2−xSex (0 < x < 1) was found to undergo a marcasite-to-arsenopyrite (P21/c space group) structural phase transition at x ∼ 0.65. The structures are similar, with the marcasite structure best described as a solid solution of As/Se, whereas the arsenopyrite has ordered anion sites. Magnetic susceptibility and thermoelectric property measurements from 300–2 K were performed on single crystals, FeAs1.50Se0.50. Paramagnetic behavior is observed from 300 to 17 K and a Seebeck coefficient of −33 μV K−1, an electrical resistivity of 4.07 mΩ cm, and a very low κl of 0.22 W m−1 K−1 at 300 K are observed. In order to determine the impact of the structural transition on the high-temperature thermoelectric properties, polycrystalline FeAs2−xSex (x = 0.30, 0.75, 0.85, 1.0) samples were consolidated into dense pellets for measurements of thermoelectric properties. The x = 0.85 sample shows the best thermoelectric performance. The electronic structure of FeAsSe was calculated with DFT and transport properties were approximately modeled above 500 K.

We observed exotic hysteresis behavior in the ferrimagnetic transition of a Laves compound TbCo2. While positive thermal hysteresis was observed in zero-field calorimetric measurements, inverse thermal hysteresis was observed in thermomagnetic measurements as a rare phenomenon. These observations confirmed a first order of the ferrimagnetic transition and revealed a lowering of this order by an external magnetic field. Elastic measurements and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements suggested that the rare inverse thermal hysteresis can be related to microscopic lattice strains. Those strains are induced by a spontaneous magnetoelastic coupling and are modified by the external magnetic field.
