Cracks are among the earliest indicators of deterioration in concrete structures. Early automatic detection of these cracks can significantly extend the lifespan of critical infrastructures, such as bridges, buildings, and tunnels, while simultaneously reducing maintenance costs and facilitating efficient structural health monitoring. This study investigates whether leveraging multi-temporal data for crack segmentation can enhance segmentation quality. Therefore, we compare a Swin UNETR trained on multi-temporal data with a U-Net trained on mono-temporal data to assess the effect of temporal information compared with conventional single-epoch approaches. To this end, a multi-temporal dataset comprising 1356 images, each with 32 sequential crack propagation images, was created. After training the models, experiments were conducted to analyze their generalization ability, temporal consistency, and segmentation quality. The multi-temporal approach consistently outperformed its mono-temporal counterpart, achieving an IoU of $82.72\%$ and a F1-score of $90.54\%$, representing a significant improvement over the mono-temporal model's IoU of $76.69\%$ and F1-score of $86.18\%$, despite requiring only half of the trainable parameters. The multi-temporal model also displayed a more consistent segmentation quality, with reduced noise and fewer errors. These results suggest that temporal information significantly enhances the performance of segmentation models, offering a promising solution for improved crack detection and the long-term monitoring of concrete structures, even with limited sequential data.

This paper reports on the shared tasks organized by the 21st IWSLT Conference. The shared tasks address 7 scientific challenges in spoken language translation: simultaneous and offline translation, automatic subtitling and dubbing, speech-to-speech translation, dialect and low-resource speech translation, and Indic languages. The shared tasks attracted 18 teams whose submissions are documented in 26 system papers. Decoherence is a major challenge for quantum technologies. A way to mitigate its negative impact is by employing quantum optimal control. The decoherence dynamics varies significantly based on the characteristics of the surrounding environment of qubits, consequently affecting the outcome of the control optimization. In this work, we investigate the dependence of the shape of a spin inversion control pulse on the correlation time of the environment noise. Furthermore, we analyze the effects of constraints and optimization options on the optimization outcome and identify a set of strategies that improve the optimization performance. Finally, we present an experimental realization of the numerically-optimized pulses validating the optimization feasibility. The $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological model has been highly successful in predicting cosmic structure and evolution, yet recent precision measurements have highlighted discrepancies, especially in the Hubble constant inferred from local and early-Universe data. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) present a promising alternative for cosmological measurements, capable of reaching higher redshifts than traditional distance indicators. This work leverages GRBs to refine cosmological parameters independently of the $\Lambda$CDM framework. Using the Platinum compilation of long GRBs, we calibrate the Dainotti relations-empirical correlations among GRB luminosity properties-as standard candles through artificial neural networks (ANNs). We analyze both the 2D and 3D Dainotti calibration relations, leveraging an ANN-driven Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to minimize scatter in the calibration parameters, thereby achieving a stable Hubble diagram. This ANN-based calibration approach offers advantages over Gaussian processes, avoiding issues such as kernel function dependence and overfitting. Our results emphasize the need for model-independent calibration approaches to address systematic challenges in GRB luminosity variability, ultimately extending the cosmic distance ladder in a robust way. By addressing redshift evolution and reducing systematic uncertainties, GRBs can serve as reliable high-redshift distance indicators, offering critical insights into current cosmological tensions., Comment: 21 pages; 10 figures

Research in vision and language has made considerable progress thanks to benchmarks such as COCO. COCO captions focused on unambiguous facts in English; ArtEmis introduced subjective emotions and ArtELingo introduced some multilinguality (Chinese and Arabic). However we believe there should be more multilinguality. Hence, we present ArtELingo-28, a vision-language benchmark that spans $\textbf{28}$ languages and encompasses approximately $\textbf{200,000}$ annotations ($\textbf{140}$ annotations per image). Traditionally, vision research focused on unambiguous class labels, whereas ArtELingo-28 emphasizes diversity of opinions over languages and cultures. The challenge is to build machine learning systems that assign emotional captions to images. Baseline results will be presented for three novel conditions: Zero-Shot, Few-Shot and One-vs-All Zero-Shot. We find that cross-lingual transfer is more successful for culturally-related languages. The growing number of seismic and elastic attributes poses a challenge, making the full benefit from each attribute in characterizing geological formation very difficult, if not impossible. Various approaches are routinely employed to select the best attributes for specific purposes. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have demonstrated good capabilities in combining appropriate attributes to address reservoir characterization problems. This study aims to use and combine seismic and elastic attributes to detect hydrocarbon-saturated reservoirs, source rock, and seal rocks in the Poseidon field, Offshore Australia. A large number of attributes are extracted from seismic data and from impedance data. Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are implemented to combine the extracted attributes and convert them into Resistivity volume, and Gamma Ray volume from which Shale probability volume, Sand volume probability volume, Effective Porosity volume, and Gas Chimney Probability Cubes. The cubes are deployed for a detailed analysis of the petroleum system in the area. The produced Shale volume and Resistivity cube helped delineate the seal rock and source rock in the area. Next, the reservoir intervals were identified using Porosity, Shale, and Resistivity volumes. A pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is trained using another carefully selected attribute set to detect subtle faults that hydrocarbons might migrated through from source rock to trap. The integration of all the extracted cubes contributed to find new prospects in the area and assess their geological probability of success. Distributed learning (DL) leverages multiple nodes to accelerate training, enabling the efficient optimization of large-scale models. Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), a key optimization algorithm, plays a central role in this process. However, communication bottlenecks often limit scalability and efficiency, leading to the increasing adoption of compressed SGD techniques to alleviate these challenges. Despite addressing communication overheads, compressed SGD introduces trustworthiness concerns, as gradient exchanges among nodes are vulnerable to attacks like gradient inversion (GradInv) and membership inference attacks (MIA). The trustworthiness of compressed SGD remains underexplored, leaving important questions about its reliability unanswered. In this paper, we provide a trustworthiness evaluation of compressed versus uncompressed SGD. Specifically, we conduct empirical studies using GradInv attacks, revealing that compressed SGD demonstrates significantly higher resistance to privacy leakage compared to uncompressed SGD. Moreover, our findings suggest that MIA may not be a reliable metric for assessing privacy risks in machine learning.

This paper proposes a machine learning approach for classifying classical and new Egyptian music by composer and generating new similar music. The proposed system utilizes a convolutional neural network (CNN) for classification and a CNN autoencoder for generation. The dataset used in this project consists of new and classical Egyptian music pieces composed by different composers. To classify the music by composer, each sample is normalized and transformed into a mel spectrogram. The CNN model is trained on the dataset using the mel spectrograms as input features and the composer labels as output classes. The model achieves 81.4\% accuracy in classifying the music by composer, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed approach. To generate new music similar to the original pieces, a CNN autoencoder is trained on a similar dataset. The model is trained to encode the mel spectrograms of the original pieces into a lower-dimensional latent space and then decode them back into the original mel spectrogram. The generated music is produced by sampling from the latent space and decoding the samples back into mel spectrograms, which are then transformed into audio. In conclusion, the proposed system provides a promising approach to classifying and generating classical Egyptian music, which can be applied in various musical applications, such as music recommendation systems, music production, and music education.

Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has emerged as a significant advancement in 3D scene reconstruction, attracting considerable attention due to its ability to recover high-fidelity details while maintaining low complexity. Despite the promising results achieved by 3DGS, its rendering performance is constrained by its dependence on costly non-commutative alpha-blending operations. These operations mandate complex view dependent sorting operations that introduce computational overhead, especially on the resource-constrained platforms such as mobile phones. In this paper, we propose Weighted Sum Rendering, which approximates alpha blending with weighted sums, thereby removing the need for sorting. This simplifies implementation, delivers superior performance, and eliminates the "popping" artifacts caused by sorting. Experimental results show that optimizing a generalized Gaussian splatting formulation to the new differentiable rendering yields competitive image quality. The method was implemented and tested in a mobile device GPU, achieving on average $1.23\times$ faster rendering.

In this paper, we consider the Jordan--Moore--Gibson--Thompson with a time-fractional damping term of the type $\delta \textup{D}_t^{1-\alpha} \Delta \psit$ where we allow the challenging so-called critical case ($\delta=0$). This equation arises in the context of acoustic propagation through thermally relaxed media. We tackle the question of long-time existence of the solution. Recent years witnessed remarkable progress in computational histopathology, largely fueled by deep learning. This brought the clinical adoption of deep learning-based tools within reach, promising significant benefits to healthcare, offering a valuable second opinion on diagnoses, streamlining complex tasks, and mitigating the risks of inconsistency and bias in clinical decisions. However, a well-known challenge is that deep learning models may contain up to billions of parameters; supervising their training effectively would require vast labeled datasets to achieve reliable generalization and noise resilience. In medical imaging, particularly histopathology, amassing such extensive labeled data collections places additional demands on clinicians and incurs higher costs, which hinders the art's progress. Addressing this challenge, researchers devised various strategies for leveraging deep learning with limited data and annotation availability. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of deep learning applications in histopathology, with a focus on the challenges posed by data scarcity over the past decade. We systematically categorize and compare various approaches, evaluate their distinct contributions using benchmarking tables, and highlight their respective advantages and limitations. This study addresses the challenge of analyzing the growth kinetics of carbon nanotubes using in-situ homodyne polarization microscopy (HPM) by developing an automated deep learning (DL) approach. A Mask-RCNN architecture, enhanced with a ResNet-50 backbone, was employed to recognize and track individual nanotubes in microscopy videos, significantly improving the efficiency and reproducibility of kinetic data extraction. The method involves a series of video processing steps to enhance contrast and used differential treatment techniques to manage low signal and fast kinetics. The DL model demonstrates consistency with manual measurements and increased throughput, laying the foundation for statistical studies of nanotube growth. In one-dimensional quantum materials, conducting electrons and the underlying lattices can undergo a spontaneous translational symmetry breaking, known as Peierls transition. For nearly a century, the Peierls transition has been understood within the paradigm of electron-electron interactions mediated by longitudinal acoustic phonons. This classical picture has recently been revised in topological semimetals, where transverse acoustic phonons can couple with conducting p-orbital electrons and give rise to an unconventional Fermi surface instability, dubbed the transverse Peierls transition (TPT). Most interestingly, the TPT induced lattice distortions can further break rotation or mirror/inversion symmetries, leading to nematic or chiral charge density waves (CDWs). Quantum materials that host the TPT, however, have not been experimentally established. Here, we report the experimental discovery of an incommensurate TPT in the tetragonal Dirac semimetal EuAl$_4$. Using inelastic x-ray scattering with meV resolution, we observe the complete softening of a transverse acoustic phonon at the CDW wavevector upon cooling, whereas the longitudinal acoustic phonon is nearly unchanged. Combining with first principles calculations, we show that the incommensurate CDW wavevector matches the calculated charge susceptibility peak and connects the nested Dirac bands with Al 3$p_{x}$ and 3$p_{y}$ orbitals. Supplemented by second harmonic generation measurements, we show that the CDW induced lattice distortions break all vertical and diagonal mirrors whereas the four-fold rotational symmetry is retained below the CDW transition. Our observations strongly suggest a chiral CDW in EuAl$_4$ and highlight the TPT as a new avenue for chiral quantum states., Comment: Supplementary materials are available upon request

Current Artificial Intelligence (AI) computation systems face challenges, primarily from the memory-wall issue, limiting overall system-level performance, especially for Edge devices with constrained battery budgets, such as smartphones, wearables, and Internet-of-Things sensor systems. In this paper, we propose a new SRAM-based Compute-In-Memory (CIM) accelerator optimized for Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) Inference. Our proposed architecture employs a multiport SRAM design with multiple decoupled Read ports to enhance the throughput and Transposable Read-Write ports to facilitate online learning. Furthermore, we develop an Arbiter circuit for efficient data-processing and port allocations during the computation. Results for a 128$\times$128 array in 3nm FinFET technology demonstrate a 3.1$\times$ improvement in speed and a 2.2$\times$ enhancement in energy efficiency with our proposed multiport SRAM design compared to the traditional single-port design. Lightning strikes to wind turbines (WTs) pose significant hazards and operational costs to the renewable wind industry. These strikes fall into two categories: downward cloud-to-ground (CG) strokes and upward discharges, which can be self-initiated or triggered by a nearby flash. The incidence of each type of strike depends on several factors, including the electrical structure of the thunderstorm and turbine height. The strike rates of CG strokes and triggered upward lightning can be normalized by the amount of local CG activity, where the constant of proportionality carries units of area and is often termed the collection area. This paper introduces a statistical analysis technique that uses lightning locating system (LLS) data to estimate the collection areas for downward and triggered upward lightning strikes to WTs. The technique includes a normalization method that addresses the confounding factor of neighboring WTs. This analysis method is applied to seven years of data from the National Lightning Detection Network$^\textrm{TM}$ and the US Wind Turbine Database to investigate the dependence of collection areas on blade tip height and peak current. Deep learning is making a profound impact in the physical layer of wireless communications. Despite exhibiting outstanding empirical performance in tasks such as MIMO receive processing, the reasons behind the demonstrated superior performance improvement remain largely unclear. In this work, we advance the field of Explainable AI (xAI) in the physical layer of wireless communications utilizing signal processing principles. Specifically, we focus on the task of MIMO-OFDM receive processing (e.g., symbol detection) using reservoir computing (RC), a framework within recurrent neural networks (RNNs), which outperforms both conventional and other learning-based MIMO detectors. Our analysis provides a signal processing-based, first-principles understanding of the corresponding operation of the RC. Building on this fundamental understanding, we are able to systematically incorporate the domain knowledge of wireless systems (e.g., channel statistics) into the design of the underlying RNN by directly configuring the untrained RNN weights for MIMO-OFDM symbol detection. The introduced RNN weight configuration has been validated through extensive simulations demonstrating significant performance improvements. This establishes a foundation for explainable RC-based architectures in MIMO-OFDM receive processing and provides a roadmap for incorporating domain knowledge into the design of neural networks for NextG systems.

Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ has attracted recent interest due to its proximity to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid state and the complex structural response observed at high pressures. We use x-ray spectroscopy and scattering as well as electrical transport techniques to unveil the electronic structure of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ at ambient and high pressures. Despite featuring a $\mathrm{Ir^{4+}}$ $J_{\rm{eff}}=1/2$ state at ambient pressure, Ir $L_{3}$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering reveals broadened electronic excitations that point to the importance of Ir $5d$-Cu $3d$ interaction. High pressure first drives an Ir-Ir dimer state with collapsed $\langle \mathbf{L} \cdot \mathbf{S} \rangle$ and $\langle L_z \rangle/\langle S_z \rangle$, signaling the formation of $5d$ molecular orbitals. A novel $\mathrm{Cu \to Ir}$ charge transfer is observed at the onset of phase 5 above 30 GPa at low temperatures, leading to an approximate $\mathrm{Ir^{3+}}$ and $\mathrm{Cu^{1.5+}}$ valence, with persistent insulating electrical transport seemingly driven by charge segregation of Cu 1+/2+ ions into distinct sites. Concomitant x-ray spectroscopy and scattering measurements through different thermodynamic paths demonstrate a strong electron-lattice coupling, with $J_{\rm{eff}}=1/2$ and $\mathrm{Ir^{3+}}$/$\mathrm{Cu^{1.5+}}$ electronic states occurring only in phases 1 and 5, respectively. Remarkably, the charge-transferred state can only be reached if Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is pressurized at low temperature, suggesting that phonons play an important role in the stability of this phase. This paper focuses on developing a novel hybrid-haptic (nHH) device with a remote center of rotation with 4 DOFs (degrees of freedom) intendant to be used as a haptic device. The new architecture is composed of two chains handling each one a part of the motions. It has the advantages of a parallel robot as high stiffness and accuracy, and the large workspace of the serial robots. The optimal synthesis of the nHH was performed using real-coded genetic algorithms. The optimization criteria and constraints were established and successively formulated and solved using a mono-objective function. A validation and comparison study were performed between the spherical parallel manipulator and the nHH. The obtained results are promising since the nHH is compared to other similar task devices, such as spherical parallel manipulator, and presents a suitable kinematic performance with a task workspace free singularity inside.

Due to recent advancements in machine learning, recommender systems use increasingly more energy for training, evaluation, and deployment. However, the recommender systems community often does not report the energy consumption of their experiments. In today's research landscape, no tools exist to easily measure the energy consumption of recommender systems experiments. To bridge this gap, we introduce EMERS, the first software library that simplifies measuring, monitoring, recording, and sharing the energy consumption of recommender systems experiments. EMERS measures energy consumption with smart power plugs and offers a user interface to monitor and compare the energy consumption of recommender systems experiments. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) collaboration measured a tight relation between the Hubble constant ($H_0$) and the distance to the Coma cluster using the fundamental plane (FP) relation of the deepest, most homogeneous sample of early-type galaxies. To determine $H_0$, we measure the distance to Coma by several independent routes each with its own geometric reference. We measure the most precise distance to Coma from 12 Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) in the cluster with mean standardized brightness of $m_B^0=15.712\pm0.041$ mag. Calibrating the absolute magnitude of SNe Ia with the HST distance ladder yields $D_{\textrm Coma}=98.5\pm2.2$ Mpc, consistent with its canonical value of 95--100 Mpc. This distance results in $H_0=76.5 \pm 2.2$ km/s/Mpc from the DESI FP relation. Inverting the DESI relation by calibrating it instead to the Planck+$\Lambda$CDM value of $H_0=67.4$ km/s/Mpc implies a much greater distance to Coma, $D_{\textrm Coma}=111.8\pm1.8$ Mpc, $4.6\sigma$ beyond a joint, direct measure. Independent of SNe Ia, the HST Key Project FP relation as calibrated by Cepheids, Tip of the Red Giant Branch from JWST, or HST NIR surface brightness fluctuations all yield $D_{\textrm Coma}<$ 100 Mpc, in joint tension themselves with the Planck-calibrated route at $>3\sigma$. From a broad array of distance estimates compiled back to 1990, it is hard to see how Coma could be located as far as the Planck+$\Lambda$CDM expectation of $>$110 Mpc. By extending the Hubble diagram to Coma, a well-studied location in our own backyard whose distance was in good accord well before the Hubble Tension, DESI indicates a more pervasive conflict between our knowledge of local distances and cosmological expectations. Graph machine learning, particularly using graph neural networks, fundamentally relies on node features. Nevertheless, numerous real-world systems, such as social and biological networks, often lack node features due to various reasons, including privacy concerns, incomplete or missing data, and limitations in data collection. In such scenarios, researchers typically resort to methods like structural and positional encoding to construct node features. However, the length of such features is contingent on the maximum value within the property being encoded, for example, the highest node degree, which can be exceedingly large in applications like scale-free networks. Furthermore, these encoding schemes are limited to categorical data and might not be able to encode metrics returning other type of values. In this paper, we introduce a novel, universally applicable encoder, termed PropEnc, which constructs expressive node embedding from any given graph metric. PropEnc leverages histogram construction combined with reverse index encoding, offering a flexible method for node features initialization. It supports flexible encoding in terms of both dimensionality and type of input, demonstrating its effectiveness across diverse applications. PropEnc allows encoding metrics in low-dimensional space which effectively avoids the issue of sparsity and enhances the efficiency of the models. We show that \emph{PropEnc} can construct node features that either exactly replicate one-hot encoding or closely approximate indices under various settings. Our extensive evaluations in graph classification setting across multiple social networks that lack node features support our hypothesis. Daily activity monitoring systems used in households provide vital information for health status, particularly with aging residents. Multiple approaches have been introduced to achieve such goals, typically obtrusive and non-obtrusive. Amongst the obtrusive approaches are the wearable devices, and among the non-obtrusive approaches are the movement detection systems, including motion sensors and thermal sensor arrays (TSAs). TSA systems are advantageous when preserving a person's privacy and picking his precise spatial location. In this study, human daily living activities were monitored day and night, constructing the corresponding activity time series and spatial probability distribution and employing a TSA system. The monitored activities are classified into two categories: sleeping and daily activity. Results showed the possibility of distinguishing between classes regardless of day and night. The obtained sleep activity duration was compared with previous research using the same raw data. Results showed that the duration of sleep activity, on average, was 9 hours/day, and daily life activity was 7 hours/day. The person's spatial probability distribution was determined using the bivariate distribution for the monitored location. In conclusion, the results showed that sleeping activity was dominant. Our study showed that TSAs were the optimum choice when monitoring human activity. Our proposed approach tackled limitations encountered by previous human activity monitoring systems, such as preserving human privacy while knowing his precise spatial location.

Solving combinatorial optimization problems involve satisfying a set of hard constraints while optimizing some objectives. In this context, exact or approximate methods can be used. While exact methods guarantee the optimal solution, they often come with an exponential running time as opposed to approximate methods that trade the solutions quality for a better running time. In this context, we tackle the Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP). The NSP consist in assigning nurses to daily shifts within a planning horizon such that workload constraints are satisfied while hospitals costs and nurses preferences are optimized. To solve the NSP, we propose implicit and explicit approaches. In the implicit solving approach, we rely on Machine Learning methods using historical data to learn and generate new solutions through the constraints and objectives that may be embedded in the learned patterns. To quantify the quality of using our implicit approach in capturing the embedded constraints and objectives, we rely on the Frobenius Norm, a quality measure used to compute the average error between the generated solutions and historical data. To compensate for the uncertainty related to the implicit approach given that the constraints and objectives may not be concretely visible in the produced solutions, we propose an alternative explicit approach where we first model the NSP using the Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) framework. Then we develop Stochastic Local Search methods and a new Branch and Bound algorithm enhanced with constraint propagation techniques and variables/values ordering heuristics. Since our implicit approach may not guarantee the feasibility or optimality of the generated solution, we propose a data-driven approach to passively learn the NSP as a constraint network. The learned constraint network, formulated as a CSP, will then be solved using the methods we listed earlier.

Fairness in AI-driven decision-making systems has become a critical concern, especially when these systems directly affect human lives. This paper explores the public's comprehension of fairness in healthcare recommendations. We conducted a survey where participants selected from four fairness metrics -- Demographic Parity, Equal Accuracy, Equalized Odds, and Positive Predictive Value -- across different healthcare scenarios to assess their understanding of these concepts. Our findings reveal that fairness is a complex and often misunderstood concept, with a generally low level of public understanding regarding fairness metrics in recommender systems. This study highlights the need for enhanced information and education on algorithmic fairness to support informed decision-making in using these systems. We present a benchmarking protocol that combines the characterization of boron nitride (BN) crystals and films with the evaluation of the electronic properties of graphene on these substrates. Our study includes hBN crystals grown under different conditions and scalable BN films deposited by either chemical or physical vapor deposition (CVD or PVD). We explore the complete process from boron nitride growth, over its optical characterization by time-resolved cathodoluminescence (TRCL), to the optical and electronic characterization of graphene by Raman spectroscopy after encapsulation and Hall bar processing. Within our benchmarking protocol we achieve a homogeneous electronic performance within each Hall bar device through a fast and reproducible processing routine. We find that a free exciton lifetime of 1 ns measured on as-grown hBN crystals by TRCL is sufficient to achieve high graphene room temperature charge carrier mobilities of 80,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) at a carrier density of |n| = 10$^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$, while respective exciton lifetimes around 100 ps yield mobilities up to 30,000 cm$^2$/(Vs). For scalable PVD-grown BN films, we measure carrier mobilities exceeding 10,000 cm$^2$/(Vs) which correlates with a graphene Raman 2D peak linewidth of 22 cm$^{-1}$. Our work highlights the importance of the Raman 2D linewidth of graphene as a critical metric that effectively assesses the interface quality (i.e. surface roughness) to the BN substrate, which directly affects the charge carrier mobility of graphene. Graphene 2D linewidth analysis is suitable for all BN substrates and is particularly advantageous when TRCL or BN Raman spectroscopy cannot be applied to specific BN materials such as amorphous or thin films. In the physical layer (PHY) of modern cellular systems, information is transmitted as a sequence of resource blocks (RBs) across various domains with each resource block limited to a certain time and frequency duration. In the PHY of 4G/5G systems, data is transmitted in the unit of transport block (TB) across a fixed number of physical RBs based on resource allocation decisions. This simultaneous time and frequency localized structure of resource allocation is at odds with the perennial time-frequency compactness limits. Specifically, the band-limiting operation will disrupt the time localization and lead to inter-block interference (IBI). The IBI extent, i.e., the number of neighboring blocks that contribute to the interference, depends mainly on the spectral concentration properties of the signaling waveforms. Deviating from the standard Gabor-frame based multi-carrier approaches which use time-frequency shifted versions of a single prototype pulse, the use of a set of multiple mutually orthogonal pulse shapes-that are not related by a time-frequency shift relationship-is proposed. We hypothesize that using discrete prolate spheroidal sequences (DPSS) as the set of waveform pulse shapes reduces IBI. Analytical expressions for upper bounds on IBI are derived as well as simulation results provided that support our hypothesis.

This paper addresses the challenge of limited observations in non-cooperative multi-agent systems where agents can have partial access to other agents' actions. We present the generalized individual Q-learning dynamics that combine belief-based and payoff-based learning for the networked interconnections of more than two self-interested agents. This approach leverages access to opponents' actions whenever possible, demonstrably achieving a faster (guaranteed) convergence to quantal response equilibrium in multi-agent zero-sum and potential polymatrix games. Notably, the dynamics reduce to the well-studied smoothed fictitious play and individual Q-learning under full and no access to opponent actions, respectively. The paper proposes a new architecture for Distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) in which the base station (BS) jointly transmits with wireless mobile nodes to serve users (UEs) within a cell for 6G communication systems. The novelty of the architecture lies in the wireless mobile nodes participating in joint D-MIMO transmission with the BS (referred to as D-MIMO nodes), which are themselves users on the network. The D-MIMO nodes establish wireless connections with the BS, are generally near the BS, and ideally benefit from higher SNR links and better connections with edge-located UEs. These D-MIMO nodes can be existing handset UEs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), or Vehicular UEs. Since the D-MIMO nodes are users sharing the access channel, the proposed architecture operates in two phases. First, the BS communicates with the D-MIMO nodes to forward data for the joint transmission, and then the BS and D-MIMO nodes jointly serve the UEs through coherent D-MIMO operation. Capacity analysis of this architecture is studied based on realistic 3GPP channel models, and the paper demonstrates that despite the two-phase operation, the proposed architecture enhances the system's capacity compared to the baseline where the BS communicates directly with the UEs.

In this paper, we explore the existence of various non-singular compact stellar solutions influenced by the Maxwell field within the matter-geometry coupling based modified gravity. We start this analysis by considering a static spherically symmetric spacetime which is associated with the isotropic matter distribution. We then determine the field equations corresponding to two specific functions of this modified theory. Along with these models, we also adopt different forms of the matter Lagrangian. We observe several unknowns in these equations such as the metric potentials, charge and fluid parameters. Thus, the embedding class-one condition and a particular realistic equation of state is used to construct their corresponding solutions. The former condition provides the metric components possessing three constants, and we calculate them through junction conditions. Further, four developed models are graphically analyzed under different parametric values. Finally, we find all our developed solutions well-agreeing with the physical requirements, offering valuable insights for future explorations of the stellar compositions in this theory., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures

Vision-Language Models for remote sensing have shown promising uses thanks to their extensive pretraining. However, their conventional usage in zero-shot scene classification methods still involves dividing large images into patches and making independent predictions, i.e., inductive inference, thereby limiting their effectiveness by ignoring valuable contextual information. Our approach tackles this issue by utilizing initial predictions based on text prompting and patch affinity relationships from the image encoder to enhance zero-shot capabilities through transductive inference, all without the need for supervision and at a minor computational cost. Experiments on 10 remote sensing datasets with state-of-the-art Vision-Language Models demonstrate significant accuracy improvements over inductive zero-shot classification. This paper describes the corrections made to the FLORES evaluation (dev and devtest) dataset for four African languages, namely Hausa, Northern Sotho (Sepedi), Xitsonga, and isiZulu. The original dataset, though groundbreaking in its coverage of low-resource languages, exhibited various inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the reviewed languages that could potentially hinder the integrity of the evaluation of downstream tasks in natural language processing (NLP), especially machine translation. Through a meticulous review process by native speakers, several corrections were identified and implemented, improving the overall quality and reliability of the dataset. For each language, we provide a concise summary of the errors encountered and corrected and also present some statistical analysis that measures the difference between the existing and corrected datasets. We believe that our corrections improve the linguistic accuracy and reliability of the data and, thereby, contribute to a more effective evaluation of NLP tasks involving the four African languages. Finally, we recommend that future translation efforts, particularly in low-resource languages, prioritize the active involvement of native speakers at every stage of the process to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance.

We develop the bialgebra theory for two classes of non-associative algebras: nearly associative algebras and $LR$-algebras. In particular, building on recent studies that reveal connections between these algebraic structures, we establish that nearly associative bialgebras and $LR$-bialgebras are, in fact, equivalent concepts. We also provide a characterization of these bialgebra classes based on the coproduct. Moreover, since the development of nearly associative bialgebras - and by extension, $LR$-bialgebras - requires the framework of nearly associative $L$-algebras, we introduce this class of non-associative algebras and explore their fundamental properties. Furthermore, we identify and characterize a special class of nearly associative bialgebras, the coboundary nearly associative bialgebras, which provides a natural framework for studying the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) within this context., Comment: 17 pages

We present an overview of the operations and engineering interface for Planetary Radio Interferometry and Doppler Experiment (PRIDE) radio astronomy observations as a scientific component of the ESA s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) mission, as well as other prospective planetary and space science missions. The article discusses advanced scheduling and planning methods that make it possible to create observing schedules for observations of specific spacecraft in concurrence with observations of natural radio sources. In order to put this into practice and find suitable natural background calibrator sources for PRIDE of JUICE mission, we developed planning and scheduling software. The conventional scheduling software for natural celestial radio sources is not set up to include spacecraft as observation targets in the necessary control files. Therefore, difficulties already arise during observation planning. We report on the development of new and the adaptation of existing routines used in astrophysical and geodetic VLBI for satellite scheduling and planning. The analysis of the PRIDE science observations led to improved observational planning, and the mission s scheduling methodologies were studied using a systems engineering approach. In addition, we highlighted the new procedures, like finding charts for selecting calibrator radio sources over a range of frequency bands and the outcomes of those strategies for science operation planning. A simulation of the flyby of Venus during the cruise phase of the JUICE spacecraft, based on the Tudat software, is also presented, resulting in a promising opportunity to test PRIDE techniques and evaluate the improvements that PRIDE observables can make to natural bodies ephemerides., Comment: 34 pages

Fix a bounded, analytic, and simply connected domain $\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^2.$ We show that all analytic steady states of the Euler equations with stream function $\psi$ are either radial or solve a semi-linear elliptic equation of the form $\Delta \psi = F(\psi)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In particular, if $\Omega$ is not a ball, then there exists a one to one correspondence between analytic steady states of the Euler equations and analytic solutions of equations of the form $\Delta \psi = F(\psi)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

At the low-redshift end ($z<0.05$) of the Hubble diagram with Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia), the contribution to Hubble residual scatter from peculiar velocities is of similar size to that due to the standardization of the SN Ia light curve. A way to improve the redshift measurement of the SN host galaxy is to utilize the average redshift of the galaxy group, effectively averaging over small-scale/intracluster peculiar velocities. One limiting factor is the fraction of SN host galaxies in galaxy groups, previously found to be 30% using (relatively incomplete) magnitude-limited galaxy catalogs. Here, we do the first analysis of N-body simulations to predict this fraction, finding $\sim$66% should have associated groups and group averaging should improve redshift precision by $\sim$120 km s$^{-1}$. Furthermore, using spectroscopic data from the Anglo-Australian Telescope, we present results from the first pilot program to evaluate whether or not 23 previously unassociated SN Ia hosts belong in groups. We find that 91% of these candidates can be associated with groups, consistent with predictions from simulations given the sample size. Combining with previously assigned SN host galaxies in Pantheon+, we demonstrate improvement in Hubble residual scatter equivalent to 145 km s$^{-1}$, also consistent with simulations. For new and upcoming low-$z$ samples from, for example, the Zwicky Transient Facility and the Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time, a separate follow-up program identifying galaxy groups of SN hosts is a highly cost-effective way to enhance their constraining power., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. We consider a Br\'ezis-Nirenberg type critical growth $p$-Laplacian problem involving a parameter $\mu > 0$ in a smooth bounded domain $\Omega$. We prove the existence of multiple nontrivial solutions if either $\mu$ or the volume of $\Omega$ is sufficiently small. The proof is based on an abstract critical point theorem that only assumes a local $(\text{PS})$ condition. Our results are new even in the semilinear case $p = 2$.

Our goal is to investigate the charged Higgs phenomenology in the framework of 2HDM at the upcoming $e^+e^-$ and muon colliders. We are primarily concerned with the associated production processes with a fermion pair: $\ell^+ \ell^- \to \tau^+ \nu_{\tau }H^-$ and $\ell^+ \ell^- \to t \bar{b} H^-$, as well as with the W boson and a neutral Higgs boson: $\ell^+ \ell^- \to W^\pm H^\mp S$ ($S=h,\,H,\, A$) and $\ell^+ \ell^- \to W^\pm H^\mp Z$. We first update the results for $e^+e^- \to \{ \tau^+ \nu_{\tau }H^-\ , \ t \bar{b} H^-\}$ and then discuss our findings for $e^+e^- \to \{ W^\pm H^\mp S\}$ for various center of mass energies 500 GeV, 1 TeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV. In the case of muon collider, we show that the new s-channel and t-channel diagrams can increase the cross sections by virtue of their Yukawa couplings. We systematically compare our results for the muon collider with those obtained at the International Linear (ILC) and Compact Linear (CLIC) colliders. We select benchmark points and conduct signal-background analyses, incorporating detector simulations. The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Peculiar Velocity Survey aims to measure the peculiar velocities of early and late type galaxies within the DESI footprint using both the Fundamental Plane and Tully-Fisher relations. Direct measurements of peculiar velocities can significantly improve constraints on the growth rate of structure, reducing uncertainty by a factor of approximately 2.5 at redshift 0.1 compared to the DESI Bright Galaxy Survey's redshift space distortion measurements alone. We assess the quality of stellar velocity dispersion measurements from DESI spectroscopic data. These measurements, along with photometric data from the Legacy Survey, establish the Fundamental Plane relation and determine distances and peculiar velocities of early-type galaxies. During Survey Validation, we obtain spectra for 6698 unique early-type galaxies, up to a photometric redshift of 0.15. 64\% of observed galaxies (4267) have relative velocity dispersion errors below 10\%. This percentage increases to 75\% if we restrict our sample to galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts below 0.1. We use the measured central velocity dispersion, along with photometry from the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, to fit the Fundamental Plane parameters using a 3D Gaussian maximum likelihood algorithm that accounts for measurement uncertainties and selection cuts. In addition, we conduct zero-point calibration using the absolute distance measurements to the Coma cluster, leading to a value of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 76.05 \pm 0.35$(statistical) $\pm 0.49$(systematic FP) $\pm 4.86$(statistical due to calibration) $\mathrm{km \ s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$. As global warming soars, the need to assess the environmental impact of research is becoming increasingly urgent. Despite this, few recommender systems research papers address their environmental impact. In this study, we estimate the environmental impact of recommender systems research by reproducing typical experimental pipelines. Our analysis spans 79 full papers from the 2013 and 2023 ACM RecSys conferences, comparing traditional "good old-fashioned AI" algorithms with modern deep learning algorithms. We designed and reproduced representative experimental pipelines for both years, measuring energy consumption with a hardware energy meter and converting it to CO2 equivalents. Our results show that papers using deep learning algorithms emit approximately 42 times more CO2 equivalents than papers using traditional methods. On average, a single deep learning-based paper generates 3,297 kilograms of CO2 equivalents - more than the carbon emissions of one person flying from New York City to Melbourne or the amount of CO2 one tree sequesters over 300 years., Comment: Accepted for presentation at the 18th ACM Conference on Recommender Systems in the Reproducibility Track

We propose an improved comprehensive method for determining the Hubble constant ($H_0$) using the Tully-Fisher relation. By fitting a peculiar velocity model in conjunction with the Tully-Fisher relation, all available data can be used to derive self-consistent Tully-Fisher parameters. In comparison to previous approaches, our method offers several improvements: it can be readily generalised to different forms of the Tully-Fisher relation and its intrinsic scatter; it uses a peculiar velocity model to predict distances more accurately; it can account for all selection effects; it uses the entire dataset to fit the Tully-Fisher relation; and it is fully self-consistent. The Tully-Fisher relation zero-point is calibrated using the subset of galaxies with distances from absolute distance indicators. We demonstrate this method on the Cosmicflows-4 catalogue $i$-band and $W1$-band Tully-Fisher samples and show that the uncertainties from fitting the Tully-Fisher relation amount to only 0.2 km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. Using all available absolute distance calibrators, we obtain $H_0=73.3$ $\pm$ 2.1 (stat) $\pm$ 3.5 (sys) km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$, where the statistical uncertainty is dominated by the small number of galaxies with absolute distance estimates. The substantial systematic uncertainty reflects inconsistencies between various zero-point calibrations of the Cepheid period-luminosity relation, the tip of the red giant branch standard candle, and the Type Ia supernova standard candle. However, given a reliable set of absolute distance calibrators, our method promises enhanced precision in $H_0$ measurements from large new Tully-Fisher samples such as the WALLABY survey.

In this study, we develop a novel quantum machine learning (QML) framework to analyze cybersecurity vulnerabilities using data from the 2022 CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, which includes detailed information on vulnerability types, severity levels, common vulnerability scoring system (CVSS) scores, and product specifics. Our framework preprocesses this data into a quantum-compatible format, enabling clustering analysis through our advanced quantum techniques, QCSWAPK-means and QkernelK-means. These quantum algorithms demonstrate superior performance compared to state-of-the-art classical clustering techniques like k-means and spectral clustering, achieving Silhouette scores of 0.491, Davies-Bouldin indices below 0.745, and Calinski-Harabasz scores exceeding 884, indicating more distinct and well-separated clusters. Our framework categorizes vulnerabilities into distinct groups, reflecting varying levels of risk severity: Cluster 0, primarily consisting of critical Microsoft-related vulnerabilities; Cluster 1, featuring medium severity vulnerabilities from various enterprise software vendors and network solutions; Cluster 2, with high severity vulnerabilities from Adobe, Cisco, and Google; and Cluster 3, encompassing vulnerabilities from Microsoft and Oracle with high to medium severity. Large Language Models (LLMs) have gained widespread global adoption, showcasing advanced linguistic capabilities across multiple of languages. There is a growing interest in academia to use these models to simulate and study human behaviors. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that an LLM's proficiency in a specific language might not fully encapsulate the norms and values associated with its culture. Concerns have emerged regarding potential biases towards Anglo-centric cultures and values due to the predominance of Western and US-based training data. This study focuses on analyzing the cultural representations of emotions in LLMs, in the specific case of mixed-emotion situations. Our methodology is based on the studies of Miyamoto et al. (2010), which identified distinctive emotional indicators in Japanese and American human responses. We first administer their mixed emotion survey to five different LLMs and analyze their outputs. Second, we experiment with contextual variables to explore variations in responses considering both language and speaker origin. Thirdly, we expand our investigation to encompass additional East Asian and Western European origin languages to gauge their alignment with their respective cultures, anticipating a closer fit. We find that (1) models have limited alignment with the evidence in the literature; (2) written language has greater effect on LLMs' response than information on participants origin; and (3) LLMs responses were found more similar for East Asian languages than Western European languages., Comment: Was accepted to ACII 2024

We study a hierarchical control problem for stochastic parabolic equations involving gradient terms. We employ the Stackelberg-Nash strategy with two leaders and two followers. The leaders are responsible for selecting the policy targeting null controllability, while the followers solve a bi-objective optimal control problem which consists of maintaining the solution process close to prefixed targets. Once the Nash equilibrium is determined, the problem reduces to achieving null controllability of a coupled forward-backward stochastic system. To solve this problem, via Carleman estimates, we establish a suitable observability inequality. We present a complete framework of stochastic thermodynamics for a single-mode linear optical cavity driven on resonance. We first show that the steady-state intra-cavity field follows the equilibrium Boltzmann distribution. The effective temperature is given by the noise variance, and the equilibration rate is the dissipation rate. Next we derive expressions for internal energy, work, heat, and free energy of light in a cavity, and formulate the first and second laws of thermodynamics for this system. We then analyze fluctuations in work and heat, and show that they obey universal statistical relations known as fluctuation theorems. Finite time corrections to the fluctuation theorems are also discussed. Additionally, we show that work fluctuations obey the Crook's Fluctuation theorem which is a paradigm for understanding emergent phenomena and estimating free energy differences. The significance of our results is two-fold. On one hand, our work positions optical cavities as a unique platform for fundamental studies of stochastic thermodynamics. Charge density wave (CDW) and their interplay with correlated and topological quantum states are forefront of condensed matter research. The 4$H_{b}$-TaS$_2$ is a CDW ordered quantum heterostructure that is formed by alternative stacking of Mott insulating 1T-TaS$_2$ and Ising superconducting 1H-TaS$_2$. While the $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}$ and 3$\times$3 CDWs have been respectively observed in the bulk 1T-TaS$_2$ and 2H-TaS$_2$, the CDWs and their pivotal role for unconventional superconductivity in the 4$H_{b}$-TaS$_2$ remain unsolved. In this letter, we reveal the 2-dimensional (2D) $\sqrt{13}\times\sqrt{13}$ chiral CDW in the 1T-layers and intra-unit cell coupled 2D 2$\times$2 CDW in the 1H and 1H' layers of 4$H_{b}$-TaS$_2$. Our results establish 4$H_{b}$-TaS$_2$ a novel 2.5D quantum heterostructure, where 2D quantum states emerge from 3D crystalline structure.

The finite momentum superconducting pairing states (FMPs), where Cooper pairs carry non-zero momentum, are believed to give rise to exotic physical phenomena including the pseudogap phase of cuprate high-Tc superconductors and Majorana fermions in topological superconductivity. FMPs can emerge in intertwined electronic liquids with strong spin-spin interactions or be induced by lifting the spin degeneracy under magnetic field as originally proposed by Fulde-Ferrell and Larkin-Ovchinnikov. In quantum materials with strong Ising-type spin-orbit coupling, such as the 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), the spin degree of freedom is frozen enabling novel orbital driven FMPs via magnetoelectric effect. While evidence of orbital driven FMPs has been revealed in bilayer TMDs, its realization in 3D bulk materials remains an unresolved challenge. Here we report experimental signatures of FMP in a locally noncentrosymmetric bulk superconductor 4Hb-TaS2. Using hard X-ray diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal unusual 2D chiral charge density wave (CDW) and weak interlayer hopping in 4Hb-TaS2. Below the superconducting transition temperature, the upper critical field, Hc2, linearly increases via decreasing temperature, and well exceeds the Pauli limit, thus establishing the dominant orbital pair-breaking mechanism. Remarkably, we discover a field-induced superconductivity-to-superconductivity transition that breaks continuous rotational symmetry of the s-wave uniform pairing in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory down to the six-fold rotation symmetry. Combining with a Ginzburg-Landau free energy analysis that incorporates magnetoelectric effect, our observations provide strong evidence of orbital driven FMP in the 3D quantum heterostructure 4Hb-TaS2.

Code language models have emerged as useful tools for various programming tasks, yet they often struggle when it comes to complex ones. In this paper, we explore the potential of curriculum learning in enhancing the performance of these models. While prior research has suggested that curriculum learning does not necessarily help in improving the performance of language models, our results surprisingly show that this may not be the case for code language models. We demonstrate that a well-designed curriculum learning approach significantly improves the accuracy of small decoder-only code language models on the task of code execution, while its effect on code completion is less significant. To explore the potential of curriculum learning, we train multiple GPT models with 1 million parameters each to predict the next token and evaluate them on code completion and execution tasks. Our contributions include proposing a novel code difficulty assessment metric by combining software code measures, investigating the effectiveness of Curriculum Learning for code language models, and introducing a Novel Curriculum Learning schedule that enhances the performance of small decoder-only language models in code execution tasks. Low-resource languages often face challenges in acquiring high-quality language data due to the reliance on translation-based methods, which can introduce the translationese effect. This phenomenon results in translated sentences that lack fluency and naturalness in the target language. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for data collection by leveraging storyboards to elicit more fluent and natural sentences. Our method involves presenting native speakers with visual stimuli in the form of storyboards and collecting their descriptions without direct exposure to the source text. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation comparing our storyboard-based approach with traditional text translation-based methods in terms of accuracy and fluency. Human annotators and quantitative metrics were used to assess translation quality.
